Your opinion is understandable since I had the same
opinion. I use Earthlink and get most of my email thru
Yahoo. After avoiding the filters for a reasonable
time, I tried them out. After checking Subject titles
on hundreds of thousands of suspect SPAM sorted with
the filters I have only found one that I truely did
not want to discard unread.
My brother sent me a letter with a Subject line that
included "...fun times..". When he asked me if I got
his email (since I hadn't replied), I found his email
within the 900+ that had been stored free by Yahoo.
IMO, the convenience of the filters (properly
reviewed) far outweighs the rare occurance of an
error. The nature of emails is inherently insecure
anyway. An error many people make is following the
analogy that it is equivalent to snail mail. Email
should be more analogous to a note put on your cork
board. Anybody can get to it and a lot of stuff that
you don't want will end up there. Anything important
will probably be followed up if it is lost. People
that regard their correspondance as critical will
continue to use the U.S. Postal service. If we want it
to remain cheap and reliable, use it more! Ask for
more junk mail and less SPAM eMail!

Interesting. One of my first problems with Wegener
Media was when they claimed that I did not do a good
job of packing and the case arrived cracked. This
seemed highly suspicious since I did a very careful
job of packing. But, I assumed that they were honest.
Later dealings indicate that I was wrong.

Re: Intel Macs....

2006-01-11 Thread Don
Well said, Michael. I have used Macs exclusively since 1985 and enjoy
the lists I am on, learning from them all. I will admit to a tinge of
discomfort when I heard about intelmacs. But last night I watched Jobs'
Macworld presentation via the Apple site and must admit to feeling the
urge to pony up for the new iMac. When one moves forward there is always
something to be left behind... I hope there are no "deal breaker" issues
with this transition.

Would the new MacBook qualify for this list? Current processors all
have something in common, sort of. Or will there now be a MacBook list?

If it's still doing what you bought it to do, then you shouldn't worry. The
only part that can go wrong after a few years is the hard drive and the
battery might not hold the same charge it did when you got the PowerBook.
Other than that, if you have taken care of it, it should be fine.

As for Intel PowerBooks, there are increasing rumours that a new 15"
PowerBook based on Intel processor might be introduced at MacWorld in
January, so you might not have to wait a long time. However, I would
probably not be the first to buy a new design PowerBook based on a new
processor. I would wait for a 2nd or 3rd revision so that all the quirks are
worked out.

Thanks, Laurent! Interesting you mention the hard drive and battery as
contemplating the replacement of both (the former because it is simply
too small and the latter because it is not holding much of a charge) is
what brought me to the question I posed to the list. I wouldn't want to
put money into this puppy if it was reaching the end of the expected
lifespan of *other*, more expensive critical components.

I agree with you re a new PB... I would wait for at least a 2nd
generation model.

Did they have you ping a host via "name" or via IP address? If they
gave you just an address to ping, then it sounds like DNS isn't
working properly. I'd go through and verify your IP address and DNS
server settings if you entered them in manually. Make sure that you
have them entered for the proper interface, etc.

Steve

Steve... I think I pinged them at their IP address. However, I did enter
the IP address
and DNS addresses by hand, as given to me by the Earthlink tech so I assume
(yes, possibly big mistake!) that those entries are now correct.

This evening I'll try to the Updater solution and hope it works! I am
feeling like a kid
at Christmas in receipt of a new toy that reqires batteries... not
included. New OS
and new for me DSL and can't enjoy it yet.

Bad modem card or bad slot?

2005-08-23 Thread Don
Greetings following the suggestion of list members (my internal
modem is giving me problems), I purchased the following modem card on
eBay:

3COM model 3CCM756

I loaded the software from the CD, got the message that it had
successfully loaded, but the card does not mount on the desktop. I'm not
sure if my slot is good as I have never used it for anything before
(bought the PB new).

Any suggestions to get this puppy to work or thoughts on whether or not
it is the card or the slot?

Thanks!

Re: Adapter for cig lighter

2005-07-21 Thread Don and Jan Stowe

Any recommendations on an adapter to use my iBook in the car? I see
that Linksys has one that will actually allow you to plug a 2 or
3-prong plug into it, while others (APC was one that I saw) just
allows you to plug the ibook into the lighter. The APC one is $40
while the others were $80.

TIA,

I use a 100 watt inverter. It works both for charging my cell phone
and using my ibook.
I bought mine at Office Max. Make sure that the inverter wattage is
large enough for your computer.

Re: modem port going, going.....

Ken yes, I may go this route. Would certainly be cheaper as for a couple
of reasons I wouldn't attempt to do a modem install myself. I am thinking
about adding a new iMac to my life and if I do, won't get a new 'book but will
upgrade this one with bigger, faster HD and a new modem. In the meantime, the
slot modem might be the way to go.

modem port going, going.....

2005-07-19 Thread Don
I'm pretty sure the modem port on my Ti 400 is going. Anyone have a good
guess as to what it will cost to have it replaced? If the price is high
enough, it might just force me to get a new 'book!

I'm sure that's a good hunch but a Machead who speaks "the language"
might be able to bridge the gap between the IT and Claire's Mac without
doing any hands on fiddling. That would require some face time and may not
be worth the hassle but it's a possible solution if Claire really prefers to
use her Mac.

Re: real estate situation

2005-07-05 Thread Don
Claire I, too, would encourage you to try it with VPC. I responded to
your last email on the subject and mentioned I had used financial analysis
software on my PB that a couple people told me would absolutely require a
PC. I booted VPC, then the software and to everyone's amazement, everything
on the monitor looked just like a PC and the software ran fine.

Re the network a friend of mine uses his Powerbook stand-alone at work
in a PC network environment. He works for a large department in L.A. County.
Much of what they use for software is found in Office, so he has no problem
using templates and sharing files. One day an IT came into the office to
work on a couple machines and saw my friend's PB. The IT stated he had one
just about like it except it was the Al Book, not Ti. He stated that he
frequently took it out on IT jobs and plugged into the network/intranet. I
don't know how it is done but all the guy said is they don't want any virus
pollution so they would check the Mac before allowing my buddy to hook his
up.

Yes, you could just get an inexpensive PC laptop and that in the end may be
the simplest way to go, but I don't think it would be too difficult to try
the VPC first. Maybe you could find a Mac Genius (form an Apple store, a Mac
user group, a local college or university) in your area who could come into
the office with you and help get you into their network.

Good luck!!

Claire... most people will probably scoff at this but a buddy of mine turned
me on to a nice piece of financial software... did analyzations and such. He
bought a PC laptop just to use that software. I bought Virtual PC for my Ti
400 and my buddy was amazed at how quick it ran. Haven't had much experience
beyond that but I'm sure others will chime in.

Good luck!!

Re: Should I Consider Buying G4 Titanium

2005-04-16 Thread Don
Al my Ti 400 has had no hinge (or paint) problems. It gets lugged around
with me on the road a few times a week and probably runs about 8 hours a day
on average. Bought it new so that was what, four years ago? I am very
careful when carrying it out of its bag, opening it and closing it so I
don't put undo pressure on one side or the other IOW, when carrying it,
I grip it in the middle, and also open it up holding the middle edge... all
so as not to twist it or put strain on the hinges.

Warning! A power inverter is easily misused. Forget to

Devices such as heavy-start draw motors, etc. should

Greetings list members,

I am preparing to upgrade my TiBook 400 from 9.1 to X. I want to make a
bootable b/u on my external FW drive. Dragging/dropping doesn't make it so.
I found that carbon copy cloner is for X only. Any solutions, bootable
backups from 9.1?

TIA,

Don

I subscribe to MacWorld, MacAddict, MacHome (back
then), 2 newspapers and follow the media re Mac and
somehow missed that. Of coarse, I didn't have a G3
laptop at that time. Bottom line...Thank
You CR at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for bringing to our
attention (you and I and at least hundreds of others
that may still be at risk) of a serious potential
hazard. A little redundancy never hurts.

Deleting an App doesn't require a lot of rooting
around, all you have
to do is hit Cmd-f, enter the name of the app you want
deleted, then
Cmd-delete every file associated with the app on the
list. Application
gone.
---

Try that w/ an app. like Adobe Photoshop 7.0.
problems If the full app. name is searched,:
#1 only Adobe Photoshop 7.0 is found. Numerous other
large files and folders wil remain. e.g. Adobe®
Photoshop® 7.0.1 Updater, Photoshop Elements Tryout
(100MB), etc.
#2 Photoshop files used by other app.s will be lost.
i.e. we need a way to sort out files used by app.s
other than that trashed.
#3 many files installed by many app.s have no direct,
obvious name related identification.
etc,,
Deleting based on name search can involve a lot of
rooting around.

Ti Book Internet Connection Problem

2004-12-27 Thread Don
I hope someone can help me with this problem. Running 9.1 on a Ti 400...
after reboot or waking from sleep, connecting to internet (dialup) takes
several attempts. By clicking on "connect" in Remote Access or by clicking
on Netscape or IE icons, the remote access window opens but does not go
beyond "connecting"... no dial tone. So I cancel and try, try again. By
clicking the various triggers to connect (get mail, browser icon or directly
from Remote Access panel) it will eventually make a connection, usually
after 6-10 attempts. After disconnecting, as long as the computer does not
get shut down or put to sleep, re-connecting happens first click. Any ideas?
FWIW, Tech Tool says the modem is okay and this problem exists on various
phone lines.

Thanks for any ideas... this is really annoying and I fear someday I won't
be able to connect at all.

Applecare for Powerbooks (extended warranty)

Well, you did open the door...
I would somewhat agree that the purchase of an
extended warranty for an Apple laptop might be a good
idea.
1. laptops are more likely to be benefited by a
warranty than a desktop (are batteries still
included?).
2. Apple puts it under the same umbrella as the rest
of the products and may be a bit more generous.
... But; Would I get a new car without an extended
warranty? Absolutely!
1. Of the covered failures, nearly all
electronic/electrical occur under the original
warranty and most mechanical will be blamed on abuse
or normal wear.
2. Many of the independent, respected consumer groups
caution against it (Federal Trade Commission, Consumer
Reports, Canadian consumer organizations, Tom Martino,
Better Business Bureau, etc.)

http://www.troubleshooter.com/

A warranty is an insurance policy. Insurance is like
gambling. Unless you like playing the game or have
something special, why bet against the house when the
odds are in it's favor? If the worst that could
happen won't really cause you major headaches, why
else get an extended policy that is statistically
saying that you will lose?

Sounds great!
Catch 22:
I'd really like to do as you suggest but in order to
download from MacUpdates or VersionTracker it has to
be available to those sites. Since the Digest Viewer
site no longer exists, it is not available to
MacUpdates or VersionTracker.
Does anybody know if it is archived anywhere or hidden

Anything like Digest Viewer available for OSX?
re: Digest
I'm beginning to see the light.
My thought was that it was a lot quicker to download
one file (rather than numerous files) that had already
been sorted to the G-Books emails (from all the other
fun subjects like "Big...!!!"), making it easier to
review the really valuable index (if people would just
use the subject line appropriately (oops, old whine),
and make it easier, quicker to sort the whee from the
shaft.
Darn it , the whole digest has become so much fun to
read that I find myself laboring thru' the sheebang to
find the choice bangs.
I just wish that it wasn't so difficult to sort,
organize, condense, follow the theme to which I
may not have have helped.
I guess this may be frustration therapy. Spilled

I get the G-Books Digest and with all the hot activity

interesting thread when:
#1 Replies include every detail of everything that has

lengthy signature attachments, non=related topics,
etc.
#2 Replies don't include at least min. essential
details of something that has gone before. i.e I go
huh?, and have to search previous to get the
relevance.
#3 Subject titles suddenly change from the topic with
no ref. to previous.
#3 Subject titles suddenly change from the topic with
no ref. to previous.
#4 Subject titles don't shift when the change from
the original topic is really a new thread.
#6 someone posts with trivial, off subject stuff that
impedes the wonderful, natural flow that comes from an
active, dynamic forum... oh!... never mind!

Re: Software Updates

2004-09-20 Thread Don P.
This is an interesting discussion that seems to be
fracturing in a lot of tangents which are also
interesting. Perhaps some "Subject" modification might
clarify the tangents.
Perhaps we should have asked the original author what
was intended.

happen next time they show up?

As I understand it, the original author was only
interested in system 9.2 or not? Was he asking if the
updates would screw it up? By saying "again??" did he
mean that there was a previous problem discussed not
tied into the Subject? Or, since it seems that he is
normally running OSX, is he asking how this impacts
9.2? Or, is he asking what all these updates do (which
we would all like to know. So we need to go to the
Apple site and hope that we understand all the
details, rather than having a brief capture of who
"needs" it. Which was the question, wasn't it?
Then the list of individual updates... the original
author recognizes Airport Software as a concern. Does
he use Applescript, or does he need Applescript for
some hidden, mysterious reason? And what the heck is
"Authoring Support"? "CarbonLib"? "iBook Firmware"
Well, duh? ...sorry, but we all need realize that this
is not just an experienced Mac-user or tech.dialogue.
I love the Pro-opinions and the intro-to-mac dialogue.
I do see a problem with communication.

I'm not sure what i the best way reply to the list
digest. So if someone can clarify this, I may not
bungle future replies.

The above subject has no value if response is "yes I
do" or no I don't". Perhaps the original author should
have said "Why should I shut down PB.?"
Opinions seem to divide on:
Yes, turn it off because there is potential for:
1. threat of power fluctuations/damage due to storms
etc.
2. damage due to unwanted invasion from local &or
network
3. waste. some people don't put it in sleep mode (heat
concerns?).
4. battery longevity. Is it better to cycle, drain
etc. Most people don't know the totally different
approach to battery maint. re battery type.
5. damage to mechanical components: if on, it's worse
if "bumped".

No, leave it on because there is potential for:
1. OSX is designed to work better that way
2. mechanical components function longer if not
cycled.
3, no greater damage if in sleep mode.
4. batteries work best this way. ( where do the
G-books change?)
5. less start-up time.

OK...this is off forum center but w/ all the DVD

Over the years I've noted that media repair/cleaners,

"Destructive", "Waste", "Can't do any harm",

Any opinions from the the experts and those that just
want to opine?
Web search on this subject is a snake pit. Perhaps
someone could just point me to a good site that has
some authority.

Good advice but he said "I see a file..." so it is
not hidden. if a file has inadvertently been made a
visible file, why would it be "labelled Hidden"? I
suspect a popup installed by a Cookie since it is
persistant.
Suggestion: Use Explorer Preferences to remove Cookies
and give us feedback.

Re: OS 10.3.5 (split to problems attack)

2004-08-13 Thread Don P.
This thread would make for an interesting thread in
the fields of communications, psychology, philosophy
and human relations. Certainly it reveals some of the
difficulties that technical people have in conveying
what they are trying to say in non-technical terms.
:-)
The problem may have started by someone in the
academic world implying that they worked in the"real
life" world. :-)
Perhaps this was doubly galling since we see so much
SPAM and Popup ads destroying the credibility of an
otherwise honorable university. :-)
Regardless, there a few things in life for which a 10%
failure rate is deemed acceptable (although I think we
might welcome a return to that for marriages). :-)
Keep smiling. LOL and enjoying the pissing contests.

That's the experience I was talking from, that and the
shared=20
experiences of our Mac admins group on campus. We find
that, in the=20
main, we don't have to do a whole lot, since the Macs
don't seem to=20
break very often; when they do, it's often easy to
fix.

Sometimes we get seemingly hard ones, but even they
often turn out
to=20
have simple fixes.

Moreover, either because Mac users are naturally more
intelligent
;-),=20=

they're more used to fixing things themselves, living
in a computing=20
ghetto that they do, or that macs are easier to deal
with in the
first=20=

place (or a combination of all three), we find that
one reason we're
so=20=

rarely fixing problems is that the users themselves
fix the problems=20
when they arise.

I'm not offended my Mikael's remarks, what bothers me
is the seeming=20
attitude by many that the mac is just beset with
horrible problems,=20
because they go looking for the people having those
problems. (like=20
hitting MacFixit every day, and such.) It's a biased
view, and after
a=20=

while, if those are the sites you frequent, it seems
like it's the
only=20=

view.

It's like the many, many PC users I've run into who
are genuinely=20
surprised, when I tell them I didn't have to worry
about viruses on
my=20=

Mac. They see nothing but all the news coverage about
this or that
new=20=

virus sweeping the worlds computers, and never seem to
read to the
last=20=

line where the obligatory "Macs and Linux systems are
not affected."

(A problem not confined merely to computers in this
media-soaked age)

DW or TTP? fork from Re: OS 10.3.5

The quote below raises the query: Which should I buy?
Which is better, DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro?
Are there price breaks for those that purchase one and

1. Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot
from the OS X
Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function

third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or
TechTool Pro).
2. When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X,
run Disk

4. After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.

Re: Wegener Media WS processor upgrades

2004-06-05 Thread Don P.
I bought a processor upgrade from Wegener Media which
didn't work despite their absolute assurance. They
finally admitted that it wouldn't work after I sent my
Lombard to them. I got my Lombard back with a
processor that had half my original memmory chips.
They still have my memory and never compensated me for
the loss nor will they communicate further. They were
having problems but I was the one that got screwed.
Until I get my original memory back I must caution
people about dealing with Wegener Media.

Interesting. I've heard this before, but in my case, keeping the Ti plugged in

staying charged for more than 60-75 minutes. Got the 400 during the middle

That's the way I "choose" my HP laser on my Ti 400 OS 9.1 In fact, that's what
was explained in the instructions from HP.

I had this problem (couldn't connect or connect but disconnected after a few
minutes) (Ti 400 9.1). I eventually tried connecting with a second phone
line in the house and problem gone. The Earthlink people said there was no
problem on their end... I didn't believe them but find out they were right.

Make it out of Copper, which is twice as thermally
conductive as aluminum, unless the shop tools or a
dollar makes the difference. If money really doesn't
matter, make it out of Silver, which is slightly
better. :-)
Potential oxide problems could be worth considering.
Use a thermally conductive protection on the

mass production extrusions, critical weight and pinch
penny cost considerations. Your time and trouble
should govern this decision.

Re: Pismo USB printer problem

2003-09-21 Thread Don
I had problems getting my HP laser to work with my Ti 400 OS 9.1.

The HP does not show up in the Chooser panel. If I remember correctly, the
instructions indicated it would mount under the Laser Writer icon..

If the HP is still powered on and plugged into the Ti when I shut down or
sleep the Ti and close the lid, the HP restarts the 'book.

Lastly, the Ti has to be shut down (not sleeping or on) if I need to
reconnect the HP otherwise it won't print.

Unless your username is also your email address, they have to go through
eBay to contact you. If you receive spam that way which would include people
offering you off-eBay "deals" you can notify eBay. The person would have to
be a registered user and eBay would deal with them.

Better check out your components carefully to see if
anything was switched. I bought a processor upgrade
and some repair work from Wegener Media. I got the
first return with missing parts. I had to send it to
them a second time. I got the second return with
missing parts. I finally got my money back on the
processor upgrade which was a bum steer from the start
but I have never seen the promised return of my 512
RAM which they kept. I am suspect that an item which
was repaired after supposed damage in shipping, wasn't
actually replaced (or damaged). On phone calls I got
disconnected repeatedly, put on interminable holds and
got the usual "phone back later" delays. Emails were
only answered by employees that disappeared. Based on
my personal experiance with Wegener Media, they are
disorganized, incompetant liars and thieves. If they
return my 512 RAM after I have waited almost a year, I
will retract my comment about thieves. Regardless,
after paying for shipping 3 times, long distance phone
charges, loss of computer for almost 1/2 year, etc.,
etc., I would stay away from Wegener Media.

Re: iTunes Importing

2003-06-08 Thread Don
Dan...

Thanks for the information contained in this post. I just bought OS X;
wanting access to the latest iTunes and the Apple music store pushed me over
the edge. (I am also looking for a good new or used burner on eBay and will
get an iPod, too.) I have been concerned about losing a lot of sound quality
in downloads compared to commercial disc and this information makes me feel
a little better about the the process. I am not and never have been a snobby
audiophile. (I still use my middle-of-the-road-when-new Kenwood KR 4070 and
Infinity Qe speakers and admit to still enjoying the warmth found in vinyl
when played on a reasonably decent system). But the thought of "losing"
sound in the download process, even if it is an imperceptible loss, doesn't
sit well with me for some reason. So the better quality of download, the
better I will feel about it.

" Just a little experience in buying stuff
oversee.

By beginning November 2002 I ordered PB
Wallstreet batteries=20
(internal + external) from WegenerMedia (ibookparts
and
powerbookpart=20
stores on internet), for an amount of $225,00, using
PayPal.

As I hadn't received anything by the beginning
of December, I=20
sent an eMail to WegenerMedia, stating that I was
still waiting for
my=20=

batteries and asking if everything was ok with my
order. The answer
I=20
got was not completely satisfying to me ("Did you
receive these
yet?"),=20=

but I thought that one month was not so much for
receiving this kind
of=20=

package from US to France, and I decided to wait some
more.

I guess this was a mistake: as I still hadn't
received anything
by=20=

the end of January, I sent another email to
Wegenermedia, but did
not=20
get any answer. A few days later, I sent another mail
stating that I=20
was considering to activate PayPal user complaint
procedure, and I=20
didn't get any answer.

So I turned to PayPal, and I got an answer from
them: I had
one=20
month to activate the user complaint procedure, and as
the delay was=20
ran off, they couldn't only ask WegenerMedia to do
their best to
solve=20=

the issue. At this date, I still don't have any news
from WegenerMedia.

Should I say that I feel like I reached the
limits of this kind
of=20=

trading:
  - You don't really expect to receive your orders
using oversee=20
mails in one month, except if you decide to pay a lot
more for very=20
short delivery (which was not proposed to me when I
asked for
delivery=20=

costs), so you can't expect anything from PayPal or
other equivalent=20
services, even if you pay for using them,
 - When you do this kind of transaction, it seems
that the only=20
thing you are sure of, is that the money you give will
be received,
not=20=

your order, specially when you work with what seems to
be dishonest=20
companies or people.

I can imagine that my order was really sent by
WegenerMedia,
and=20
might have been lost between them and my home. What I
can't
understand=20=

is that I did the best to ensure that my money was
effectively sent
to=20=

WegenerMedia, but that the equivalent was not done by
them: I did
not=20
receive my order, I couldn't get any answer from them,
even after=20
asking PayPal (but did PayPal really get in touch with
them ?). The=20
result is that I paid a fair amount of money... for
nothing.

I really feel like angry: loosing money is a bad
thing by
itself,=20=

but when you are completely left by the one who took
your money and=20
don't even give the appearance to care, is even more
difficult to=20
accept.

Well, maybe I am rather naive and this kind of
things happens=20
everyday. In this case, this mail will, at least
permit to share my=20
experience and to remind people to be very cautious,
much more than
I=20
was.

It looks like I'm not the only one having problems
with Dave Wegener at Wegener Media. I've been trying
to straighten out some of his dealings for months. At
present I'm waiting for the return of $299 and 512 MB
of RAM which he personnaly promised.
Gerard, if you can not get satisfaction with a
situation such as yours, I would suggest the
following:
1. Report your payment to Paypal as fraudulent.
2. If you used US Mail for any transferrals or
communication, inform them of any illegal activity,
ie. fraud
3. Communicate your situation, as you have done, to
others that may use the services. The more people that
know of your problem, the fewer people will deal with
someone disreputable.

Hopefully, we will both be able offer retractions to
our comments if we are only seeing a normal delay and
nothing illegal is taking place. So far, based on my
experiance, I would suggest people should reconsider
if tempted to do businness with Dave Wegener or
Wegener Media.

Thanks for the suggestions. Like I said, No keyboard
keys seem to help. Even SAFE BOOT (Shift key at
chimes) won't get me past the Apple. It scares me to
try to run a CD Startup with the hard drive
disconnected and replug while hot with everthing open,
but what else is left?

My Lombard is going into a freeze at the Apple logo
upon Startup. No rescue so far. Won't startup from
externals. No keyboard keys seem to help. May relate
to Iomega installation. Next step is to pull hard
drive and try a hot restart from CD the replug the
hard drive hot.
Seems to work OK mon my G4 mirror.

Hello, has anyone else had problems with OS X 10.2.4
and kernel panics?
The
update installed fine on my machine (Pismo/400 0.5 GB)
but I've had two
panics in the past 24 hours -- one was apparently
related to dial-up (I
had
just been disconnected from the web when all of a
sudden I had the
panic
screen pop-up). The second time the computer wasn't
quite asleep
(screen
blank, HD spinning) and I pressed F12 to eject the
disk to wake the
machine
up. No response and eventually I get fed up of waiting
and give the
machine
the three finger salute. When I check the log a second
kernel panic was
logged precisely at the time I pressed F12.

Huh? Before the upgrade it was working flawlessly (no
panics). I dread
the
thought of having to wipe the HD and start again from
scratch so I'm
hoping
it's just teething pains.

Eric.

Believe it or not, this happened to me twice today in a semi-public place...
severe admiration of the design and large screen of my Ti. Doesn't happen
everyday or even every week but it is not uncommon and no longer a surprise when
PC heads express their appreciation of the 'book.

Sounds like a "Good 'ol Boys Club" to me. Somebody is
making a lot of bucks. The stink trail probably goes
from a local "contributor" and into to the pocket of
the implementor of the policy (or somebody that is

Anybody know the name and address of the Congress

tax dollars not intended for support of extortion of

Wallstreet Power Issues

2002-07-18 Thread Don Silver

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a used Wallstreet (not the 233
mhz with 12" screen) but have heard about battery
charging problems and AC adapter problems. I've dealt
with similar issues for years with my old 540c and
don't want to repeat them. Can anyone point me to a
link or FAQ on this topic?

TIA,
Don

lombard hinges dying?

2002-06-23 Thread Don P.

In the following message the statement "is there a
"rule" for pismo modems dying (i.e. like
lombard hinges dying after certain time)" has me
worried. I just bought a Lamabard. Is there a problem
with the hinges?
I have 2 of 2300c, one of which "popped" its hinges
mysteriouslly. Any idea of the cause or a fix? I've
had no problem with the second 2300c but I don't want
it to do the same.
Thanks,
Don

nowhere (sitting

some "registry" or
"register" has failed the test

same things are happening both in os x 10.1.5 and in

Re: skipping DVD on TiBook [was: TiBook vs G3 Wallstreet]

2002-05-25 Thread Don

I suppose the thread is in the archives, but there was a brief exchange on
this topic several months ago. I followed some of the advice (having
experienced the same skipping DVD problems), and although I can't remember
what it was, whatever I did, it worked. I can now watch a full DVD w/o it
skipping and stalling. That's on a Ti 400, OS 9.1.

Re: TiBook Screen Scratches

I agree -- rarely pick up and carry the 'book when it is not in the carrying
case, but when I do, I do so with the TiHandle to avoid any torque or pressure
on the case. Also use the leather piece over the keyboard and clean with
iKlear Apple Polish. No marking or scratching thus far (over a year with ti
400), and I carry it with me every day.
