Re: Choking on Yahoo Mail, OSX, ADSL, Firefox, adfarm.mediaplex.com ads

2005-04-01 Thread George Mogiljansky
Thanks, Laurent.

I just checked e-mailanywhere.com. They claim it works
best with Internet Explorer. This means they are
windows oriented?

Is there a Linux/Unix webmail-based service that will
work from any Windows or Mac 'puter anywhere?

Choking on Yahoo Mail, OSX, ADSL, Firefox, adfarm.mediaplex.com ads

2005-04-01 Thread George Mogiljansky

Hi all,

Serious choke points and loading 10 sec. or longer and
finally no ad is loaded. Using Yahoo Mail, OSX, ADSL,
Firefox; adfarm.mediaplex.com ads - these ones do the
choking. Mediaplex.com is indeed an internet
advertising firm, located worldwide.

I wrote to Yahoo but their help is useless (no
response). I compared Mac 'puters - 10.1.4 up to
10.3.8 - same slow down. Yahoo can also be slow on an
even faster cable connection (using Windoze) at work.

I will abandon Yahoo mail if nothing can be done, so
your webmail based alternatives welcome (G-mail does
not work!).

HDD's green light on for a moment but no spin up

2005-02-06 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi,

It's an ancient Seagate UW SCSI HDD. I attach a ribbon
power cable and the green light comes on but no spin
up. Is it dead or does it need a special cable to spin
up?

Re: Dance through the OS Xs

2005-01-06 Thread George Mogiljansky
Not being an expert, I will paraphrase others:

Classic had many versions, each one better than the
previous.
OSX has very startling differences, effectively "an
entirely new OS" in 10.1, 10.2, 10.3.

Re: Dance through the OS Xs

2005-01-06 Thread George Mogiljansky
Oh, yes, Halo (whazzat?) reminds me of Haloscan, that
ubiquitous blogger "Comments" box SW. Opening that box
crashes Firefox (!) on the 10.3.7-armed WS Series II
with 512 MB Ram & ADSL.

But no crashes on an ancient, if slightly wheezing,
9500 G3-upgraded 9.1-using 384 Ram-loaded running

Re: OT-trouble with webpages loading

2005-01-06 Thread George Mogiljansky
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention. Safari 1.2 using 10.3.7
on a WS Series II with 512 MB Ram and ADSL - you can
still get stalls/slowdowns using Yahoo features (mail,
groups).

OSX in its various flavours is a slick marketing tool,
nothing else. This is 'beta-testing' taken to a new
low. They still tweak the install disks to each
machine; but the original 8.0 G3 Beige install disk
has access to installers for both non-G3 Macs and 68k!

There is/was also a way to install 8.6 on
non-supported machines, and a way to install 8.1 on
non-supported macs. Linux/NetBSD is your final hurrah
for 'legacy' HW (see Mandrake PPC, Debian PPC, NetBSD,
AU/X, among others).

Re: OT-trouble with webpages loading

2005-01-06 Thread George Mogiljansky
Add Yahoo to the trouble; slow loading or not loading
at all (I'm using ADSL) any mail function, groups
(lists of messages inaccessible).

If this continues, I will re-try Linux (Mandrake PPC
was working, I have Debian to try). Linux is very
difficult to install on pre-G3 Powermacs. At least
with OSX you have XPostFacto that sometimes works.

I will give up on Yahoo, of course, if things
continue.

Seems the'Net is breaking up into a myriad of special
interests (gamers, newbies, hackers, crackers,
business types) each with their own 'preferred' OS,
optimized for them and them alone.

Finally Successful Panther Install on WS II

2004-11-11 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hello!

Using an external 16" Mac Color Display (fixed freq.),
I was able to do a fully normal Panther install.
Previous attempts using default settings for XPF were
partially successful as mentioned before (using the
built-in screen which went bonkers just at the end of
'optimization'. and deathly quiet from the Pb
innards).

Daisy-chaining a scanner and an external HDD* might
have made things easier, also. The CRT went dark
(shades of 10.03 on my former G3 Beige DT) during the
install, but the internal HDD and CD-Rom continued to
chug away until the reboot chime.

The only hitch is a pink line, half way up and half
way across on the right side. It doesn't interfere
with usage.
Thanks to all.

Re: Wallstreet and UDF

2004-11-07 Thread George Mogiljansky
My experience with a Series II is that the Panther
installer chokes , i.e. the video goes haywire a few
minutes before the end on the install. I reboot and
Panther seems to work, but some programs do not work
or are not installed, e.g. Stuffit, Safari (but the
app and alias in the dock are both present).
Luckily, Mozilla installed (so I can still use the
Net) and Preview (the pdf reader app). Prefs are
accessible.

I used XPostFacto without the special video setting
(thanks to Ben Dyer) for Wallstreet. With the special
setting I could not install Panther at all.

Re: Wallstreet LCD backlight not turning on after wake from sleep / installing OS9

My two cents' worth: it depends if during the OSX
install you checked "install OS9 drivers". But I've
been told to format drives intended for OSX using the
OS 9 version of Disk Drive Set-up.

Re: Wallstreet backlight, sleep issue

2004-09-29 Thread George Mogiljansky
I had the same problem (no lit screen after wake from
sleep in Jaguar, no OS 9 installed). Things only got
worse after I erased the perfectly good all-Jaguar
all-the-time HDD in order to install Panther. Using
XPostFacto, the screen completely disappeared, nothing
would install. I tried to reinstall 10.2, starting
with 10.1 base install - the CD is not recognized
(worked fine a few weeks ago).

I am only guessing, but maybe the PRAM settings have
been altered in a way that needs more then PRAM Reset
to get them back.

Re: LF; SW to communicate between two Macs using phone line (modem)

2004-08-25 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hello Al,

Experts aside, I have one word, er..one URL for you:
macorchard.com.

Like an old friend, I found some freeware and/or
shareware that might help me out. I seriously
doubt(ed) you can simply tell your modem to dial-up
your remote Mac and get desktop access to it. I might
be reduced to sending files to a Mac-friendly freebie
website (do these still exist? I don't have a server)
and then downloading them.

What about Telnet, anyone?
I'm using OS 8.6, dial-up, PowerBook 3400.

Hi Larry,
I personally know of a Mac-using graphics business
that keeps a 9600 PowerMac just for clients who use
older fonts.
Try searching for solutions, e.g. on Mac-related NGs

using suitable key words, of course. I remember
getting some good insights. It's a nasty problem.

Re: Lombard speed-up/optimization...meandering to WS II PDQ

2004-08-18 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi,

I have 512 MB of Ram from OWC and running Jaguar fine
on a WS Series II PDQ; some sleep issues (won't wake -
need to reboot). I have not installed any 10.2 updates
at all; Mozilla Firefox runs very well.

Over in Canada (North America), most/all consumer
electronic devices "must accept interference" or

Is this the case here?

Re: A haunted Lombard ?

2004-08-15 Thread George Mogiljansky
Is there a PC card or other component that is
sensitive to a wireless network?

Can you examine the system logs?

There was a problem with the earlier WS series -
something about the magnetic effect of a spinning HDD
on the sleep function (corrected on the HDD in
question by placing a piece of metal over a portion).

Or could it be an internal cable that is reacting to a
signal from somewhere?

Could you reproduce the conditions of this incident?

Is the power-on button jammed or altered?
Is there an wake/alarm setting (and could it be due to

Which modem script in 10.2 for built-in WS PDQ 56k modem?

2004-08-11 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi G-Powerbookers,

Using plain vanilla 10.2 without updates in a
Wallstreet 300 MHz PDQ, internet access via dial-up
with built-in modem; (getting very flaky connection in
a remote area (cottage country), so the line may be
the problem).

Which modem script is usable or native to the WS PDQ?
Thx
George

PS: after contacting my ISP, service improved
dramatically (using the Hayes Accura 56k script).

and one of the following Apple computers:

Does this include the Wallstreet PDQ?

Re: Customizing OS X. . .Using Install CDs and multiple CDroms

2004-06-27 Thread George Mogiljansky

Hello,
Has anybody tried using install CDs and multiple
CDroms?
Of course, I'm talking SCSI connections and a
shareware app called Pacifier (yanked off the 'Net? -
can't find no trace of it right now, today!).
What this does is it allows you to cherry pick the
Panther or OS X apps that you need to install.

Re: Wallstreet USB

2004-05-22 Thread George Mogiljansky
Seems normal. USB cards (2.0) won't allow you to boot
into Classic OS on a Beige desktop or pre-G3 powermac,
but OS X works fine on both. I suspect old world
laptops would behave the same, and ASP won't detect
your USB card either (mine is an Iomega for the
desktop).

Re: Wallstreet screen question

2004-05-04 Thread George Mogiljansky
While looking for a replacement 14.1 screen, I chose
like-for-like (exact part# - not only Apple's , but
Samsung's also); all the cables, everything is the
same. Avoid problems, unless you live next door to the
source. (From my G3 beige experience, double-sided
Dimms are read as 256 MB and not 128; yes, but not
nec'y in an all-in-one Beige, as I only today found
out.)

Re: iBook HD wierdness

2004-05-01 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi,
AFAIK, Panther doesn't allow booting from OS from any
disc in any system. OS 9 Helper will install 9.2.2 on
old world Macs (powerbooks, too?), but I've never used
it. Ah, the old days - when we could de-activate and
re-bless Sys Folders at will with mininal risk.
Also, does Panther install allow for installing OS 9
disk drivers - I doubt it.
What is the Rom version of your iBook? If it's a SW
Rom (new world Macs), can you burn a bootable/install
CD with a newer version?
Did you have an earlier OS on the HDD and was it
spanning also?
How did you install OS9 on the TiBook? Is it a
system-specific install CD?

But doesn't CCC make a bootable disk out of the target
disk? Or is that one option?
Also, can you use a non-Apple ROM HDD - I've tried
everything to install X on a Compaq branded HDD but no
go. I was able to install OS 9 drivers via the X
install CD, but Apple Drive Set Up still sees it as an
unsupported drive.

Re: Photoshop font problems (was Re: Must Have Apps?)=Jaguar Font Problems

2004-04-25 Thread George Mogiljansky
The real issue (if it is) is that his machine cannot
boot into OS 9 to access pre-OS X fonts.

In fact, I have copied fonts from OS 9 into OS X
folders that are inaccessible when booting into
Jaguar.
But this allowed me to activate those fonts and/or the
languages and keyboard characters they are used with.

I don't have all the details you asked for, and I
don't think merely copying the problematic fonts from
OS 9 folders would activate all of them in OS X.

Is Panther better or worse with pre-OS X fonts?

The graphic artist is using authorized versions of
Photoshop, etc.

Is there a better place to discuss 'Jaguar font
problems'? I tried newsgroups, but that's taking way
too long.
Thanks
George

800 MHz iBook logic board replacement ? ("only the video chip is dead")

2004-04-25 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi,
Will any other logic board fit? A local user says (I'm
guessing he went to Apple) it costs Cdn $1000 to
replace it but only the video chip is dead. Warranty
is expired. I see a lot of 500, 600, 700 MHz boards on
eBay and only one 800 MHz (all way, way less than Cdn
$1000).
I haven't checked the usual dealers. The screen is
good.
Thanks
George

Hi Dante,
Try removing the USB card and inserting it after

corrupt, conflict with Apple's, etc.
Also try the USB printer power-on/off variations.

Re: WallStreet fan on when asleep in OSX

2004-04-20 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi Jack,
Have you tried version tracker? What is the key
word(s) for this SW you mention? Is it maybe a Classic
app?

OS X can do funny things (this morning my 9500 booted
into Darwin; I know text mode, but this isn't it).

I would try my PDQ with OS X; my research so far shows
mixed results. Why only 10.1.5? Jaguar is a more
mature OS X.; 10.2.8 is a better choice for
unsupported Macs than 10.3 AFAIK.

Re: Wallstreet Display

2004-04-18 Thread George Mogiljansky
Here's the 'official' solution, with photo:
"..
Apparently the IBM Travelstar creates an unusually
high magnetic field for a 4200 RPM hard drive, which
interferes with the PowerBook's "sleep switch" located
inside the lower body housing adjacent to the Delete
key and right above to the hard drive. When you close
the PowerBook cover while the PowerBook is on, it will
not awaken from sleep mode, if you close it after
shutting down, it will not start up. You will hear an
"electronic clicking" sound when you press the power
button. There has been a lot of discussion on this
subject on various tech sites. People have also
reported that a small weak "refrigerator magnet"
placed for a second on the case next to the delete key
"resets" the sleep switch, something I don't think an
owner should have to do!

The permanent solution is actually simple, place a
.04mm thick sheet of a non ferrous metal like brass
between the HD and where the sleep switch is in the
body of the PowerBook.I purchased a small piece of
.2mm (1/64th") thick sheet of polished brass and then
cut it in half to the right width to fit between the
screws inside the hard drive caddy (see photo below).
We needed to use a double thickness of the brass, to
block the magnetic field created by the 40GB drive.
Larger drives may need even more brass.."

Re: iceBooks melt; board-level repairs, anyone?

2004-04-17 Thread George Mogiljansky
Speaking of board-level repairs, anyone have sources
(sites or newsgroups) I can consult?

I have a sickly PowerBook 3400 (won't boot unless a
powered external SCSI device is attached, i.e. the
active termination supplied by the SCSI bus has been
damaged (?). It may be nothing more than the metal
strip (framing the external HD-30 port) having a break
or a gap (not so on my Wallstreet HD-30, unless the
connectors are different)).

Re: Wallstreet I Ibackup battery replacement instructions needed. . .

2004-04-09 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi Stanton,

Depending on time, etc. do it yourself. The confidence
booster alone is worth it. If not, post a request on
your local newsgroup for a tech who has a good rep.

I even bought a Pram battery for a 3400 from a battery
specialist (not a computer-related store). Take your
old battery to a battery store (see the old-fashioned
Yellow Pages) and they will/should gladly accept the
challenge.

Re: Wallstreet II video problem

2004-04-09 Thread George Mogiljansky
The Apple Service manual says first reset the power
manager.
For the 13.3 screen, start with the display cable.
If you have a 14 inch screen, start with the inverter
cable, then the power cable, the inverter board
(replace), replace the display, i/o logic.
I just bought a replacement screen on eBay. Mine is
dim and a replacement of the backlight seems
problematic One user did it but dust got into the
screen and it's pretty bad.
Does anyone know if the 14 inch backlight is
soldered-in or just clips in?

Re: Powerlogix vs Sonnet

2004-04-08 Thread George Mogiljansky
Here are some test results, Mikael; quoting briefly
from this page:

".. using the OS X version of SpeedRun Benchmarking
software on both kits, and comparing them with other
tested systems that were saved in the log, both boards
made the WallStreets faster than a G4 450 Cube, G4 466
PowerPC and a G4 Titanium PB 667! Ok - Ok, we have no
idea why it beat a TiPB 667, but it did on repeated
tests with no deviations.."

The 'boards' are the PowerLogix G4 500 and the Sonnet
G3 500.

Re: Powerlogix vs Sonnet

2004-04-05 Thread George Mogiljansky

Let your fingers do the walking (old Yellow Pages
jingle) - from the site I quote:

"..Here was the first surprise, the PowerLogix G4
design somehow allows the OS X compromised ATI RageLT
Pro video card to run more efficiently on non AltiVec
optimized applications. In repeated test runs (because
we couldn't believe our eyes), the ATI RageLT Pro
video card was 12% faster on average than the Sonnet
G3. Don't ask me why!.."

Enjoy!

LCD take-apart, anyone? Need info, please

2004-03-30 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hi,
I have a Samsung LT141X2-124. I believe it has a
burned-out backlight.
What do I need to know to take it apart safely and to
change the backlight?

Also, is this the same LCD as found in other G3
models, e.g. Wallstreet.

All I have as an ID is the following on the case
bottom - the family # (M4753) and;
Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series 14.1
TFT/300MHz-1MB/64MB/8GB HD/4MB video/CD/Modem.

Thanks
George

Re: OS X tossing prefs ?

2004-03-29 Thread George Mogiljansky
I'm curious, too. My non-PowerBook G3-upgraded 8500
has started to 'break', i.e. Firefox 0.8 has refused
to open today but worked normally yesterday. I suspect
bad Ram or bad Ram placement since I recently added
some Dimms. The log was included in the bug report
filed with Mozilla.
Regarding my recent acquisition - a G3 Series II (PDQ
according to the serial #) 300 MHz; can it run Panther
with the stock CPU and 192 MB Ram? I believe some list
members have succeeded (perhaps using XPostFacto
and/or Carbon Copy Cloner).
George
PS: the family number for the PB is M4753. If anyone
can enlighten me as to the exact model, please go
ahead. I need to replace some parts!

Re: Dim Screen on a G3 Series II - fix or replace?

2004-03-27 Thread George Mogiljansky
Thanks, Paul.
The closest take-apart instructions with pictures I
found are here -
<http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum3.html>,
and for the display -
<http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum9.html>.

I followed them to the end, i.e. so no mention of the
cold cathode or power supply. What should the voltage
be (seeing as how the power is off; I am an amateur)?

My main concern is the cables so that if I get a
replacement screen, it will work 'out of the box'. So
far, I 'see' no damage with regards to cables. And
probably the screen is not expensive compared to the
cold cathode lamp and/or lamp power supply?

Dim Screen on a G3 Series II - fix or replace?

2004-03-26 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hello!

I just acquired a G3 Series II with 300 MHz, 192 MB
Ram. The previous owner had some water leak onto the
'book and the display is almost totally dim (you need
a flashlight to see something). Video-out works fine.
The Power Adapter is the Yoyo type and the battery
charges well. Surfing via ADSL with OS 9.0.4 is very
quick using iCab.

I have taken apart powerbooks before and this one
looks easy (compared to a 3400c). What am I looking
for in terms of damage and replacement parts?

If the 14.1 (I am reasonably sure it's not smaller)
screen and/or cables have to be replaced, what pb
models are compatible?

I ran Norton and TechTools before buying the unit. I
have only the standard user manuals and the original
install CD (OS 8.5). If there is (are) websites
dedicated to this model, please let me know.

Thanks
George
