Re: security re: file sharing/networks
Amber, Sounds like you should return the favor with a visit to your neighbor (along with a member of the local law enforcement community) to explain your position and let her try out her implied strong arm tactic (regarding her brother dealing with you) on your new found friend. I would not put up with crap like that, and would make it clear that she and her brother understood that. Plus, it gives you a documented record in case he does hack into your network illegally. Amber, You must have stumped him with your reply. Either that, or his pee- cee was experiencing the BSOD syndrome. Way off topic, but still has me laughing...about a month ago I went through the McDonald's drive through for breakfast. It had one of those nice, new video screens that display your order. After about a minute, I was asked for my order. I gave it, and it was repeated back to me. Silence. Then I was given the total. I waited before proceeding to the window because throughout the entire ordeal, about 3 minutes; the nice, new screen had an image of Windows Scan Disk running (well, sort of) that was stuck at 87%. I only wish I had the digital camera with me! To follow your Gasoline analogy, he was referring to Mac's more as dirty diesel and PC's as Gold/Premium. He seemed to feel that their PC programmers were completely incapable of making eBay work on Safari and suggested I upgrade to Explorer 6.0. I immediately informed him that changing to Explorer in any shape or form would be a DOWNGRADE and that as I understood, Microsoft stopped working on Explorer for Mac after version 5.2 because of the popularity (and superiority) of Safari. Re: Pismo G3/Panther 10.3.4 OS 9.1 as classic-can't get 9.1 to 9.2
Somewhere in the install/upgrade process (9.0 to 9.1 to 9.2.1), the upgrade CD (9.2.1, IIRC) would not install fully. The CD's are not machine specific. I had to download or copy the CD contents (don't remember) to the hard drive, restart with extensions off, and run the upgrade from the hard drive. That worked, and I did the downloaded upgrade to 9.2.2. That was the only way I could get to 9.2.2. That was on my Dual G4 Gigabit. May be similar in Kim's case? Re: ibook SE
Larry, The third generation iBooks were Indigo for 366mhz and Graphite for the 466mhz SE. But the Key lime was available in both speeds, 366 and 466SE. This info was on the little fold-up brochures provided by Apple (I have one somewhere, but can't find it) and is also reviewed in the December 2000 MacAddict (p. 16, where it says Key Lime glows in the dark under a black light!) I think the second generation also had an SE, the 366mhz in Graphite. IIRC, the standard iBook was 300mhz in Blueberry and Tangerine (in both first and second generation). Re: G4 Titanium and Olympus C1400L
Maria, Just another opinion... My Dad has a Zio! USB CF reader for his G4 iMac. Works fine, but last I checked, he would get kernal panics in Panther when waking from sleep with the Zio! plugged in. Not sure if this is the case with SmartMedia. Also, if you don't have any plans to use other types of media anytime soon and don't mind spending a few more $$, look into a PCMCIA adapter for SmartMedia. I think some are even 4-in-1. And IIRC, PCMCIA speeds are faster than USB 1.1? IIRC PCMCIA is on an internal ATA bus? Hope this helps. Re: Battery: iBook Clamshell
Kyle, Is the battery white, marked model:M6392 or more of a silver color? If it's silver, it's an older battery for the first generation iBooks and has probably gone bad. I had four like that and they were replaced under Apple's 1 year warranty (I have a Tangerine 300 and a Graphite 466SE). And the replacements were M6392 higher capacity for the later clamshell iBooks (extra runtime in first generation). Re: Another satisifed PBParts.com customer
Andrew, Try contacting this guy: Ron Whitney [EMAIL PROTECTED] I found him selling new Apple hinges on ebay, at the time (Sept.), $49 for left or right or add $30 for both. For about $91 including shipping (to USA), my Wallstreet now has new Apple hinges. And he's located in Canada. By the way, the hinges came in sealed and stickered Apple packaging. They are not upgraded hinges, but the price is right for another 3 to 5 (?) years of service. Shawn On Monday, December 15, 2003, at 01:35 PM, Andrew wrote: That's very reassuring to hear. I had planned to send my wallstreet in for the hinge upgrade, thinking that for $10 more than the stock hinges it was a great deal. Sadly even though it is only $79 for the hinges and installation, they quoted me $86 (about $116 Canadian) for the return shipping (One way!) to BC Canada. There policy of not being willing to sell the hinges without installing them makes it very expensive for us folks up north. After exchange and shipping both ways it comes to over $250 Canadian. I'm sure they have a good reason for it, but I'm still pouting - and hingeless! ;) on 12/14/03 8:48 PM, Gary Goldberg at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I, too, just want to report a positive experience with PBParts.com I also had a failing hinge on my Wall Street PB and the latch was not catching either. Andrew, Any flash drive should work and fit your clamshell iBook. Most, if not all, come with an extender cable. I have 2 - 128MB flash drives from Tamarack (Pen Drives) and I have to use the cable. I eventually used a razor blade to shave off the corners of the T3Hub's casing so it could be inserted in the iBook, an ugly if finally effective solution. Re: WS repair follow-up
Mark, My Wallstreet sat unused for a long period of time, and a good battery would no longer take a charge or show up in the control strip(OS 9). I zapped PRAM, reset Power Manager, and left bad battery in Wallstreet, shut down and plugged in to AC for a few days undisturbed. Battery now works fine. Worth a try. Shawn P.S. - Where did you find the ac/sound card for $4? I have now replaced the board, and the sound is now back and the PowerBook attempts to charge the battery! Not bad, considering the power/sound board only cost me five pounds (about 4 US dollars). I think the battery has been discharged to the point of no return, though. Now when the battery is inserted, the second LED on the battery comes on and then goes off. I have tried the battery reset application, and also starting up in both OS9 and OSX but this didn't make any difference. The battery didn't hold much charge, anyway, so it looks like I will need to source a new one. I haven't tried disconnecting the power for that long, but the PRAM settings (date and time, etc) are no longer reset, which is good. The process was easier than I thought, and I found the only fiddly bit was reattaching the display cables. It shows up under about acomputer, but that is it. I have been getting memory problems for awhile and wasn't aware that the computer wasn't acknowledging all of the ram. It stops whistling if I hold the plug and push it into the jack tighter. I am using a brick. I have a backup yo yo but am not too thrilled with it. THe last two have sparked on just one use. I can't record to a cd firewire backup. I get errors or else it hangs during finishing session. I can get backup to my swappable zip drive though. Disk first aid fixed a volume error the other night. I am not sure where to go with all of this. At first I htought it was the drive, now it looks like it could be adapter or both and why the trouble with the firewire? A mac guy will charge 50 to come to my house (am disabled and can't drive), 85 per hour for labor, and 200 for a new Toshiba drive. I have heard the ibm travelstars are better and cheaper. Not sure how much I should spend on this if the money could go toward a newer model. Am now very confused about whether the computer has one problem or multiple problems. Thanks so much for any advice. Lynn -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: warranties
Mike, If the Titanium is a model that has been updated more than 1 year ago in Apple's product line, do yourself a favor and save a lot of steps by contacting Apple with the serial number and tell them you would like to register it. A co-worker bought an iBook (300mHz) from Sears on closeout new in the box in 2001 and didn't register it until a few months after purchase. A key popped off and the speaker acted up. He called to get warranty work performed and a proof of purchase was required even after he had registered it online because the product was well beyond the date of discontinuation. My Dad bought a G4 iMac in April 2003 that had been repackaged with updated software through Apple and sold new by Micro Center. Apple Care was purchased at the same time, and when we registered Apple Care over the phone, proof of purchase was required because of the age of the machine. In both cases the proof of purchase was required to validate the full warranty. Check that first, then worry if it is stolen. Shawn On Friday, July 18, 2003, at 04:40 AM, Michel Treisman wrote: Hi! I have been offered a new and unused Titanium powerbook which the seller says he recently obtained from an Apple employee at Cupertino. But there is no proof of purchase with the machine. Without proof of purchase would I have no warranty, if there is a major failure of some sort in the first year? I thought one could tell the age from the serial number. Would that be sufficient for a warranty? Does anyone know the answers? Mike -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
