Re: USB PC Card on Wallstreet

2005-01-11 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Many thanks to James, Bob and the others who answered my request.
Having set the processor to save power when on battery exactly was
the culprit! Now the card works fine. Such a simple solution to a
problem which nearly drove me crazy Š

Many thanks again!

Seems almost everyone, including me, gets caught by this. Symptoms - The
WallStreet works fine with a USB card whilst on mains power but freezes
up under battery power.

The solution is to turn off Allow processor cycling under Settings for
Battery, in Control Panels, Energy Saver, Advanced Settings. Now the USB
card should work fine. At least it did for me.

You probably have processor cycling turned on in the Energy Saver
control panel (or, if you're like me, you may a similar Control
Strip Module). If processor cycling is enabled you **will** get
consistent freezes shortly after bootup.

Turn of processor cycling both in the AC settings and battery
settings and I'm willing to be your problems will disappear.

BTW you *do* know, don't you, that you will only be able to use the
USB card at 1.1 speeds unless you are in OS X?

I had a similar problem years ago with a different powerbook and software,
but mine would only happen when I was on battery. After shipping it to
Apple, etc., etc., a tech locally said to change the energy saver so it
wouldn't cut back on power on battery because the PC card needed continuous
power or it would crash the whole system. For what it's worthgood luck

Dead PRAM batter. Try leaving it on the charger overnight then try
it. Or just don't shut it down, sleeping it instead.

Display Acting Up? / Bad RAM Stiks? / (Was Jaguar Install on Wallstreet)

2005-01-06 Thread Jason Long
Weird.. It does this now since I upgraded my RAM to 320 MB RAM, but it
wakes up as I play with the Bright Setting Button... Does this every time I
turn it on, also it makes a line of color 1/2 across the screen when
shutting down and stays like that for about 30-45 seconds. Should I worry
about that?? Display Going out? Or does it just don't like the RAM Sticks I
put in which I got from OWC the other day. Running OS X on it now..
Much faster with the 320 MB RAM In it...

That's why I said G3 SERIES Powerbook and not G3 Powerbook

Re: Ram in a Wallstreet

2005-01-06 Thread Luis Sequeira

There's no RAM 'on board' on any G3 series Powerbook.
The Kanga is a G3 PowerBook. It has 32-Mb RAM on the logic board.
Both posters are right...
The expression "G3 SERIES Powerbook" does not include the Kanga; and
all G3 "SERIES" Powerbooks have no ram onboard.

And the Kanga IS a G3 Powerbook and has ram onboard.
The naming can be confusing, as has at times been discussed aplenty
on this list.

But it is not a "G3 Series" Powerbook. That is how Apple
differentiates them, the Kanga is a "G3 PowerBook", the WallStreet,
Lombard and Pismo are "G3 Series" PowerBooks.

Yeah, the Kanga has 32Mb on board and a single proprietary slot that
can hold up to 128Mb.

Okay, _now_ we're splitting hairs.
Anyway, Jeff is right. Wallstreets commonly came with 32MB in the
lower slot. Since 256MB low profile SODIMMs are more expensive than
their full-height brethren, I'd say it's good odds that the bottom
slot has 32MB and the top slot has 256MB.

Wallstreets came with 32MB of RAM, in the lower slot. No one ever made

Wallstreet loses settings

2005-01-04 Thread James Sanderson
Here's my problem. I installed 10.3 on a WS 1/233 with 288MB desktop.
It booted into it just fine; would sleep and wake just fine; the video
wouldn't white out. It seemed pretty stable. I shut down after a day,
allowing it to shut down and restart per a schedule I set. Everything
worked fine. After using it for a time, I shut down for a whole day.
When I restarted the darn thing booted into 9.2. Now it boots into 9
all the time. To get to 10 I have a ritual I have to go through. Boot
into 9, try to reset the start disk, freeze, restart into 9, reset the
start up disk, restart. It has done this consistently for three days
now. Yesterday the date and time reset. It holds the time when it
finally boots into 10, but looses it when it boots into 9.
Would only the PRAM battery be the culprit of all this quirkiness?

your Mac, you click on 'more info.' The system profile window comes up
and you would click on memory where it tells you what you have where.
I don't believe Jag did this, however.

Re: Ram In a Wallstreet/300Mhz

2005-01-04 Thread John . E . Abraham
Hi Pete
You Should not have any problem.
I have a Wallstreet II 233 Mhz with 512 ram and $0 Gb HD running 10.1.5.
Just make sure it is low profile and the correct density of chips.
I was lucky with mine as a fellow lister (The Powerbook Fanatic) checked
compatibility for me before sending them. When installed they were
identified
in system profiler and I have had no problem since.

I have been given OS 10.2 for Christmas so I hope the installation of
this will go
as smoothly as 10.1 and its upgrades did.

install and put it in after.

Hello,
I have just acquired a Wallstreet (292 mhz, 64 mb ram, 5 GB hd with

about half an inch. Is there a cure, besides a new screen?
Also, the Re-set of: Shift, Control, FN and Power does not work and I

there other suggestions for a way to shut it off?
Thanks.
Actually, it should be: Cmd-Ctrl-Power

Re: Ram in a Wallstreet

2005-01-02 Thread PETE
I have a wallstreet/300 running OS 9.2.2 and system
profiler does tells me the slots and sizes of the
installed ram. But then as others have already
mentioned your system profiler depends on which OS
you're running but all the OS's that run in a
wallstreet should give you both the slot position,
upper or lower, and size of each stick of ram

Unless you are running an old version of the OS then System Profiler
will tell you what each slot has. Look for a triangle next to the
memory listing and click on it. The triangle should turn down and
then more information will be shown.

Well, you may be correct, as the only manual I have is a .pdf and does
not say "pb g3 series." Probably for the earlier version. Will have to
hunt up a more recent version. Thanks for the insight! It is good to

Darn it, Ken, you made me go look for supporting references. :-)

I didn't have much time, so I didn't come up with the definitive
reference(s) that I wanted. But I have a dozen or more email messages
(from people that I have known over the years and respect their Mac
knowledge) indicating one of the advantages of the Wallstreet (I &
II) is the ability to hot-swap ADB devices. It *is* the one and only
PB with that capability.

As far as the manual is concerned, page 73 of the PowerBook G3 Series
"Macintosh PowerBook User's Manual" states:

"NOTE: You may experience a slight delay if you connect a mouse or
other ADB devices while the computer is turned on."

It wouldn't say any such thing -- especially without a warning -- if
the ADB port was not hot-swappable.

Please provide the page # for your reference. I still have a
gut-feeling that you're quoting from a different manual than the one
for the Wallstreet.

Maybe so, but my quotes were "clipped" directly from the user's

Yes, but watch out for chip density. Here's a clip from an earlier

Expansion-bay modules. Correct. The term is hot-swappable. The only
items that might have unusual swap guidelines are some USB and
FireWire peripherals (we're talking about using PCMCIA cards for
these on a Wallstreet).

I don't know which manual you checked, but the ADB devices on a
Wallstreet are also hot-swappable. As I recall, it was the 1st
PowerBook to be so (and maybe the only one, I'm not positive about
that).

Because of the power (5v) on the SCSI line, it has always been "shut
down before adding or removing devices" even though some people have
gotten by hot-swapping SCSI devices for years.

The bottom line is "no, you don't have to shut down (or even put to
sleep) your Wallstreet when adding or removing ADB mice or keyboards
or expansion-bay modules." HOWEVER, if the ADB devices have 3rd-party
drivers, they may not be enabled without rebooting (i.e Kensington
multi-button mice).

Nope. The Wallstreet takes PC-100 144 pin SO DIMMs while the
B&W takes PC-100 3.3v, unbuffered, non-parity 168 pin SDRAM.

You get what you pay for.
I've never had problems with memory from Data Memory Corp,
and while they're not always the very
cheapest, I'm more than willing to avoid the endless and
hard-to-diagnose problems you get from bad RAM.

I had bad RAM in my 7600 once.
What happened is that my internal SCSI bus went away when I put in my
G4 upgrade card. This persisted when I replaced my motherboard. I
figured it was an issue with the G4 card and put it up on the shelf,
pissed off. (It was an old JoeCard I'd gotten on clearance, the
original company was no longer in existence and I couldn't return it)

Months later I bought 2 new 128 MB RAM sticks (from Datamem) and
discovered that not all my RAM now showed up.

Painstakingly checking, DIMM by DIMM, I discovered that everything
would work by itself, but that when some of my older sticks were in the
system the new 128 MB sticks didn't show up.

I bought another 128 MB stick at $24 and replaced all of the motley old
collection of 16 and 32 MB sticks and the system ran far better and
crash-free than before.

On a hunch, I re-installed the G4 upgrade. Not a hitch.
Saving a couple of bucks is NOT worth that kind of aggravation!

Nope. The Wallstreet uses SO-DIMM's, as do the early (Rev A-D) iMacs.
They take one low-profile, and one standard (or both low-profile). The
B&W uses standard PC100/133 DIMMS. Two different animals.

Maybe yes, maybe no. I have heard some grumbles with some
brands of 256MB DIMMs. Just be sure to get a "low-profile"
DIMM for the bottom slot. There isn't room for the "normal"
sized one. Best if seller specifies the DIMM is for the

Yes. Before I parted with mine a couple of years ago I'd installed a
total of 512 in it, and it worked quite well. In fact, I traded it to a
friend and it's still running great with system 10.2. IIRC, you'll need
a low profile RAM for the bottom slot.

IIRC I had to install some special JumpDrive drivers, and it was
inconsistent, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I ended up just
getting a regular USB card reader and using that. My two JumpDrive
flash cards work fine in those as well.

Also, make sure you have the various PC compatibility extensions
loaded, as it mounts as an MS-DOS volume.

Modules, even batteries, if using AC, can be inserted and removed
while the machine is "live."

>Also, will I need to shut down to add or remove external keyboard or mouse?

Hmm. Not sure of the "official" advice, but the ADB and serial ports on
other Macs generally carry the "warning" to shut down before connecting
or disconnecting.

Ken

P.S.

Just checked the User Manual.

No mention of turning off for Printers.
Shut down of sleep for modems.
WARNING When connecting SCSI equipment, always turn off power to
all devices in the chain, including your computer. If you don¹t, you
could lose information and damage your equipment.
IMPORTANT You must shut down the computer or put it in sleep before
connecting an ADB device.

HotRod ing Wallstreet

2004-12-29 Thread CR
I'm getting to appreciate the Wallstreet II
OS 9.1
and some of the upgrade options.
It occurs to me that upgrading really needs to be
guided by what what "wants to do."
Basically, my 3400 is find for almost everything
I want to do, except receiving real time video streaming
via RealPlayer. My church broadcasts regularly and the
Wallstreet is way better for this.
So, I'm wondering if there are specific suggestions
for upgrading the key elements that will enhance this function.
The motherboard upgrade?
More RAM?
I wonder if I could get a scaled down 9.1 and RealPlayer
on a RAMdisk?
All suggestions are appreciated.

Wallstreet queries

2004-12-29 Thread kaldav
Hello,
I have just acquired a Wallstreet (292 mhz, 64 mb ram, 5 GB hd with
OS 9.1) which has a yellow tinge along the bottom of the screen for
about half an inch. Is there a cure, besides a new screen?

Also, the Re-set of: Shift, Control, FN and Power does not work and I
have had to pull the plug out to shut it off after it froze. Are
there other suggestions for a way to shut it off?
Thanks.

Can't swap a standard slim drive into a WS CD-ROM or DVD-ROM EBM sled.
See here for more info:

As someone mentioned, there were a few CD/RWs produced by MCE, and they
are indeed quite rare. I'll repeat my usual plea here for details, if
anyone has one and could take some pics of the inside for me I'd be able
to add that info to my EBM page. (TIA :-)

WS upgrades (was CD-RW for Wallstreet?)

2004-12-27 Thread CR
Really interesting stuff in reference to the CD-RW ?
Raised more questions.
I cannot seem to connect to PowerLogix have they folded?
If not, what is the relative difference between the PowerLogix and
Sonnet Tech ugrade boards?
Sonnet offers their 500MHz upgrades in G4 and G3 units:
Does this mean you can upgrade a G3 WS to a G4?
What would be the advantage to that?

The MCE stuff also looks interesting.
I'll have to dig a little deeper there.
As always.
Thanks.

What you probably have to do is get a bare mechanism, and attach it to
the carrier for the existing CD. <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com> has
details of compatible mechanisms.

I've been looking for a similar solution for a clamshell iBook. Dan K

Re: Wallstreet

2004-12-26 Thread Ben Dyer
My understanding is that the problem is in the PMU settings, not the
PRAM. Steps 2 and 3 may well be unnecessary on some models, but are
required on mine. As for pressing the brightness button, I find that it
will only fix the problem if the backlight is off after startup; when
the backlight fails to turn on after waking from sleep, the brightness
controls do nothing.

On 25 Dec 2004, at 13:13, Mikael Byström wrote:
Ben Dyer said:

As I have stated earlier on-list, I have a differing experience in that
step 2 and 3 above was unnecessary. However, to be able to boot into
OS
X, when in OS 9, you have to choose OS X as the startup disk with the
associated control panel. During the first boot, when you do this, the
machine may (or may not) freeze. On the second boot, this will not
happen. Something to do with garbled NVRAM or PRAM Settings I have
speculated. I never investigated, but if anyone want to check this,
they
could run the command:
sudo nvram -p

in the terminal and compare the individual settings when the machine
doesn't have this display problem, with when the machine do have the
problem. In order to do the latter one could direct a strong light
source
to the display in order to see. This worked for me., for doing restarts
into OS 9. I do think if possible it's ok to press the backlight
buttons
a few times to kick in the backlights if this is possible, as, for me
at
least, the problem came back at next restart, indicating the settings
were the same even if you pressed those buttons. Most often for me, I
couldn't get back the backlight, if I didn't press those buttons
somewhere around midway thru the boot process, before Aqua. After that
did not work. There may be other variations of course.
Interesting. I think your interpretation is probably right; my PRAM
battery was *completely* dead. Power failure during sleep does put more
strain on the PRAM battery, as the Wallstreet uses the battery to back
up the contents of main memory for 15-30 seconds (to enable battery
changeover during sleep).

Every time the power is interrupted (i.e. you take the power cord out,
while no working battery is present), you will have to repeat the
procedure--even if the Wallstreet was turned off at the time you
removed the power cord.
For me this problem *only* appeared if the wallstreet was in sleep or
running when the power was cutoff. It's possible the difference is
because my backup battery had a small load and yours didn't have one at
all, but I'm not sure. My experience is somewhat different, however,
and
I thought it worth mentioning.
Cheers,
Ben

Thanks for everyone's help.
Basically I have a working 233 MHz Wallstreet with 288M RAM
when I get and install replacement PCMCIA cage from Ebay
and a replacement CD module from LEM Swap
I should be in pretty good shape.
I think I'll consider upgrading the HD as well
Turning on AppleTalk Ethernet solved the connection
problem (though I haven't tried at home yet).
Running OS 9.1
Any reason to go to 9.2?
All in all potentially a neat machine, but at first
blush I like my 3400 better.
Thanks again to everyone.
What a remarkable resource these lists are!
Happy Holidays,

Next, go to the appletalk control panel and be sure its set to

Then go back to TCPIP and check again.
If still nothing, reboot and check again.

Subject: No DHCP on Walstreet Ethernet (was not-so-dead)
I found the RJ45 jack on the back of the Wallstreet.
Plugged in direct rather than my Falleron PCMCIA card.
 Turned on Apple Ethernet Ext.
TCP selects Ethernet but DHCP produces no numbers.
 Suggestions.
 Thank you.

I would guess that the PMU went South. Did you try to reset it?

Wallstreet

2004-12-22 Thread Steven J Haack
I have a wallstreet 300mhz. It needed a new pram battery which I
replaced. The main power battery was dead at that time. After running
the computer a few days with no trouble I shut it down and turned it
back on 2 days later. The clock had jumped forward by about 20 years. I
didn't think much about it. I replace the main battery and it seemed to
work fine. This last week I turned on the machine and it doesn't show
the charge symbol(with the power cord attached) and the new battery is
dead and the charging bays wont charge the battery or a known good one.
I have tested all the batteries on a good wallstreet same model. Is the
problem with the PMU or the charging board. BTW The new battery is
completely dead it refuses to take a charge. Thank you for any help you
can provide.

Wallstreet not-so-dead update

2004-12-21 Thread CR
I think I initially had two problems.
1. the HD was so hopelessly fragmented that it was seriously bogging,
stalling & freezing.
2. the battery is essentially dead and the power adapter plug dirty.
I may not have been getting a good connections so eventually I was losing
power and would have to wait. I don't know.

Anyway, I'm now getting consistent boots from disk and was able to
initialize the HD from Disk Set Up.
Start up, however, is slow and noisy.
I'm thinking maybe the CD drive is cranky.
I see DVD drives on E-bay. Presumably they run CDs too. but are they
worth the premium? or is DVD standard Wallstreet.
So, I boot from a 9.2 install disk but cannot install because
I get a dialogue telling me "Instaler cannot be found"
or "Disk Error" depending on which icon I click.
Hmmm. Guess I'll have to try my 9.1 installer.
I did zap the PRAM as suggested but was unable to rest NVRAM
as directed since the PB goes directly to disk with nothing on the HD.
Maybe that shouldn't matter but Cmd-Opt-O-F didn't seem to do
anything (did I hold it long enough?)
I didn't know where or was never prompted to type "reset-nvram" and "reset-all"
Any experience with PowerBook Medic.com Service Manuals.
Reasonable at $9.95
Thanks for all the help.

Facing the same symptoms I'd start with a fundamental reset (starting up
with Cmd-Opt-O-F and typing "reset-nvram" and "reset-all" and on the
following boot Cmd-Opt-P-R three chimes), followed with a low level
format of the drive, while booted from CD and then drive testing.

I used a 13" from the WS I on my WS II (the PDQ) for a while and I assume
that the displays from the 6 WS models could be interchanged between
models. But the cable connectors for Lombard and Pismo are different as
far as I know, so I don't see how it could be done, unless you really
know what you are doing and can get around the connector problem.

Ok, so, you did deep reset the NVRAM. Is the drive now working?

Re: Pismo HD - Wallstreet HD - The same?

Actually, I was just looking at my original WallStreet (266, 4GB HD,
from the end of the production run as the Lombard was just about to be
or had been introduced) drive - I replaced it years ago, but had just
gotten a 2.5" case and was going to put the old drive in it now, only
to find it had mysteriously died - but anyway, I noticed in the
description on the label that it is 9.5mm.

So the Wallstreet fits a larger drive, but at least mine didn't come
with one.

(That measurement has gotta be the height, right? And it is a really
skinny drive compared to other notebook drives I've seen.)

Following the discussion on the Pismo HD replacement with considerable

I am wondering if the harddrive specs for the Pismo are the same for

Someone who is in the know please let me know.
Thanks.
The Wallstreet came with the larger 17mm drives, the Lombard/Pismo

I'm fairly sure displays are completely incompatible between PowerBook
models. Wallstreet displays are going for less on eBay, so there's
probably not much point in finding out for sure.

Just the LCD itself, not the entire lid. I suspect the Pismo lid is
different.
