Cloning a broken new iBook HD in a network situation
Help- I have a new iBook going in for repair (slot won't accept cds/dvds) and would like to clone the HD in case. My firewire drive is full but my networked G5 has enough room to do the backup. Question: what is the best way to clone it in this situation? Are there any special steps to go through? I once tried CCC a couple of years ago but was unable to get it to work. Assuming you have an empty partition on your G5 all is well. If not, you could create a disk image on the G5 and clone to it. Anyway, I suggest that you use FireWire target disk mode rather than via network connection. I'm a fan of SuperDuper! as I too had problems with CCC in the past. cheers david -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Cloning a broken new iBook HD in a network situation
I'd suggest using target disk mode and using the Disk Utility that comes with OS X to make a DMG file of the drive. FWIW, CCC has always worked well for me. SuperDuper is another one that I have heard of as well. Re: New iBook
First thing, charge it completely, and then use it completely once. Charge it completely again. Regular usage should never cause the system to go to sleep forcefully, as this behavior will cause a sudden, rapid drain in the battery when it approaches end-of-life (as all cells will die roughly the same time, and you get to see your batt go from holding 4-5 hours, to holding 30 minutes in about 2 weeks). However, the exception to this rule is to use it to this point once every month or two, as this will keep it calibrated and in working order as well. brand new iBook G4 with key/lettering coming off
Hi there, I have only had my iBook G4 14 since May 10th, 2004. I have used it every day but predominantly for email - not a ton of typing by any means. Already the letter T and S are starting to wear off (peel off?) of those keys... what the heck? Is this a thing with the iBooks? I have typed a lot more on other keyboards (laptop and otherwise, all Macs) without this happening. Anything I could or should do about it? I'd rather not take a Sharpie marker and write them in... but I also don't want all the other letters/etc coming off! (I'm a decent typist, but I need to see what's where sometimes... :-) ) Thanks, Michelle Herd [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... If so, take the iBook in and let them have a look at it. If not, contact Applecare and advise them of what is happening. There is no way that the letters should be wearing off already. Whatever you do, do NOT write on the keys. Your iBook is still under warranty so you should be able to get some resolution from Apple. Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... New iBook!!!
Hi all, Thanks for all your guidance re. choosing a new Apple laptop... :) I had more or less chosen to try to scrape together what it would cost me to get a brand new iBook, because the chances I would be taking by getting a used one, just seemed too scary. I wouldn't save all that much either if I wanted one that was fairly new... But then I suddenly stumbled upon one bought in November... It is a G4, 1.2Ghz, 12, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, Bluetooth, International AppleCare until 2007 etc... It was practically new. A young boy had got it while he was studying in HongKong this fall. He had thought he would get that as an in-between while waiting for a newer model PowerBook. But after getting it, he changed his mind. So he had more or less just tried it. Not only that, I discovered that he lives in my home town!!! And the price was lower than many of the older ones I had considered... I was trying to check out a few things before deciding. Then I got a mail yesterday that he would be going to France tomorrow. So in a real hurry I managed to get hold of the guy that has been choosing which PB's I have gone for in the past, to ask for some specific advice. I told him about the only drawback with it, that it has an International keyboard, not a Norwegian one. He said he wouldn't have been in doubt with that price at all, and the keyboard could be changed easily. So that is what I need to do now. There wouldn't happen to be any Norwegians here who knows where I could get one? First I will have to figure out how I can change the key definitions, so that I can get our 3 special characters. But I see that there are several other things that are different, e.g. characters like : ; @ * are placed differently. So I really don't know where to begin, it is just not all that easy to change that way. So I will really have to get a new keyboard, just changing the definition of the keyboard isn't enough. I bet that even if I do type touch, I would suddenly doubt something and look around not knowing where to find it without having to try and try (Murphy's Law?)... So now I am sending mails to a few Apple dealers, to ask what it will cost. I am hoping that it might be possible to get hold of one pulled from a dead iBook. I am wondering if it might be an idea to give Apple a call and ask them nicely? Worth a try... I really don't need a brand new one... Since he was going abroad already tomorrow, I just had to decide quickly, and before any of the others that were interested, got to it. I got some time off from work today and went off and got it. I am so happy It looks as new as it possibly can. The power adapter hasn't even been used... I got all documentation and he is writing AppleCare to get them to register it over to my name. So could things be any better? I don't think so... :) To top it off, he had transferred a huge collection of music to it which I got to keep... :) Shoot, now I just haaave to get an Airport Express Base, so I can get wireless and connect it to the stereo too I guess I am on my way to eBay to start checking :) There was something about different types of these though. One could be connected to the stereo for sound through that, one couldn't. One was round, the other square. Can any of you explain the difference and maybe give me the correct name for the one I want? I think it is the square one, which can be connected to a stereo... Thanks a lot again, I really think I have been real lucky!!! Oh... A few questions... Do any of you know if people use car wax or something like that on the back of the screen to protect it from scratches? Just a thought... It might be an idea, it is so pretty and shiny and I would like to keep it that way... I know it works on white plastic garden furniture, so... Anybody know about some place where you can find nice (not too expensive) neoprene skins for these? I looked around on Norwegian websites a while ago, but didn't find anything. What are they called again? Do any of you have the thingie (don't know what it is called) that you can use so you can connect your Apple to the TV, to use the TV as an extra screen. Since I now have a small screen, I was thinking that this might be something to consider. My TV is a few months old, a Thomson 100 Mhz, 32 (not flat screen though) 16/9 format. Do you think such a TV would give a picture that is good enough? Re. the airport base and the thingie... Do you know if these have a power adapter and if it works for something like 110V-240V (so it works for travelling)? The reason why I am asking is that here we have 240V, so normally that would exclude buying from the US. But if the adapter is meant to work for travelling, or easily can be replaced, it could be an idea to look on eBay.com I know there was something else I needed to ask you, but now I can't remember... Oh well, as soon as I hit the send button, it'll be there... I guess
new ibook
Hey all! from those who remember me, I had a g3 bronze until some bastard stole it. I've been without a Gbook for awhile now (and thanks for keeping me on the list) and I'm glad to say that this is no longer the case-- my 1ghz ibook came by way of fedex today. I'm thrilled to be a Gbook member once again! For those who have this model of G4 ibook, is there any advice i should have? The only issue i seem to be running into is that the space key takes a little extra force to hit, but its always been my experience that such things naturally work themselves out over time (aka breaking them in). thanks again, everyone ( = take care -Dylan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... John C. Swanson said: Does anyone know that the difference in the screen resolutions is between the old TiBooks and the new iBook. I personally could care less about the screen size as long as I still had the same or better resolution.\ All Powerbook titaniums, except the 17, since the 667 DVI have had 1280 x 1024. That's a 28% difference compared to 1024 x 768. I don't think the previous titaniums are interesting compared to current machines, but they had 1152 x 768. As far as I'm concerned, 1024 x 768 is a 5 year old and obsolete standard. That said, I can certainly understand the attraction of very small, yet quite powerful machines. But if that's the ticket, I find the iBooks too big. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... No such luck, different form factor on the cards. Still you are correct that the new iBook is a far better computer than the old Ti. My new iBook G4!!
Hi to all, i'm writing this on my brand spanking new handy dandy high speed low drag iBook G4, 14 screen, 768 megs RAM, OS X 10.3.4. This is the first actually new Mac I've ever had, and I words cannot express how thrilled I am to be running it and not have to rely on my Compaq presario PC which I've learned to despise. Besides a quick hello, I actuallywanted to post some questions about a topic I've never really put much thought to. i've always been tied to desktop computers, and as such have never noticed how clumsy and awkward chords are on a laptop like this one. As such, i'm thinking of taking advantage of the built in Airport Extreme card, and hooking it together with my older computers. I've already asked other questions concerning this on other lists, so I'll keep this concise and different from the other questions I've already posed elsewhere: How much gear will I need to buy? Will an airport extreme base station do the trick for networking, or will I need to buy some more hardware and software as well? Keep inmind, i had hoped to put PCs and macs on this wireless network. Next, The school i go to has a couple wireless hotspots, but is PC oriented. What are the odds that I will be able to interface using these hotspots and my iBook? Re: My new iBook G4!!
Why is it that Mac IT folks are expected to know all the ins and outs of Windows, and all the ins and outs of the Mac, but PC IT people are unable to comprehend the deep mysteries that are the Mac? Because Windows covers 95% computers on this planet (and 99 to 100% of the area they supervise) and they have enough work as of now? And yeah... last time I copied Office file from a Mac (Office 2004) to a PC (Office 2003), I had to redo half of the tables. And yeah... even though Panther supposedly supports Windows printing, one out of three printers in our office just won't show up in the list and there seems to be no way to put it there. And yeah... AirPort Admin Utility on my Panther has a bug and just won't let me configure my AirPort Extreme, while the same program on my Windows XP works beautifully. Mac-Windows integration is still far from seamless. I love my new PowerBook and I already know I would be living much calmer and more satisfied life in the world without Windows. I don't see how Windows admins are not entitled to feeling exactly the opposite. Re: My new iBook G4!!
I like the way you think. While this IS a PC oriented campus, and I HAVE had troubles with profs who requires PC only files there, there is at least one mac lab there, and there is at least one IT person there that knows macs. The one guy I know personally should at the very least be able to point me in the right direction to clear up any problems, so long as my iBook is compatible with their network. From what everyone is telling me, however, I'm thinking it shouldn't be much of a problem. The Printers in question are both HP printers, each of them installed on at least one mac, but I would definately like to consolidate the several computers printing needs to one printer. (more) New iBook questions :)
Hello all, thank you for your responses on my last post. have a few more questions here for the professionals. Is there any way to disable some of the fancy onscreen menu shading, and moving, etc, it seems to really slow up the computer having to do all this fancy stuff on the desktop and in folders and opening stuff. Next question, I guess I made a mistake by buying the 30gig hd version, out of the box I have 18 gigs left...now call me crazy, but the OS and the programs which don't seem like there is a whole lot, like 6 web browsers--still lost with that, 12gigs worth of stuff? What can I delete etc, this is my first OSX machine, so I'm not sure if I just drag the folder into the trash that gets rid of everything, is there prefs and whatnot like Classic had, please excuse my lack of knowledge, but this is a whole new system for me. Also web browsers, there are like 5 installed on the machine, which is better the X versions or the Classic versions, and why is there a need for both? Alright well I will leave it at this.. Thank you in advance Josh Josh, I recommend and so would most of the peeps on this forum that any new computer out of the box should always be re-formatted and started from scratch. You should completely erase your hard drive, bust out the CD-ROM's that came with your computer and do a clean, fresh, problem free install. Trust me, after it's all over, you will notice your computer is running VERY fast. As far as partitions go, some recommend as much as 5 for various reasons, but I only have two. One for everything X and another for all OS 9 stuff. A note on web browsers. . .all do a pretty good job, with the exception of browsers based on open source mozilla like Safari, Firefox, and of course Mozilla and Netscape just to name a few. Mozilla based browsers tend to load pages faster than others like Internet Explorer. IE is pretty good on Mac, but forget it on PC's; security nightmare. Believe it or not, there's still websites that load better in one or the other browser. I've had websites that you couldn't even read on IE, but under Netscape or Safari it looked fine. On my Mac, I've got Safari, Netscape, Firefox and IE. I used to use IE for years, then went to Netscape when 6 came out but now I live in Safari most of the time. Seems to do a good job. What it comes down to is your preference. Some would rather call there favorite websites favorites in which case you would use IE. Others call 'em bookmarks in which case you'd go with almost all the others. I personally think you should have at least two browsers for those picky sites. Hope all this helps, Zoltan THE BLUETOOTH MASTER Also, if you have any problems supporting Microsoft by using IE don't worry about it bro. IE is a free program developed by their rather talented, dedicated Macintosh team that have been quoted under the cuff saying things like, why can't all computers be based on the great hardware that is Mac. Besides, from what I've seen over the years the software they make for Mac is ironically much more powerful and prolific than the garbage they produce for PC. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... No, it doesn't, actually. On modern macs this is largely handled by the video hardware. Next question, I guess I made a mistake by buying the 30gig hd version, out of the box I have 18 gigs left...now call me crazy, but the OS and the programs which don't seem like there is a whole lot, like 6 web browsers--still lost with that, 12gigs worth of stuff? Thank you in advance One thing that helps a lot is to get rid of the localizations that you don't need. This will get you something like 3-4 gigs back right away. DeLocalizer, from Bombich software, http://www.bombich.com/software/local.html will do the trick. If you're sticking with OS X, you don't need any Classic browser. However, I'd recommend keeping a couple of browsers around. Safari I keep around for for two things: being able to drag internet shortcuts to my dock, and running Internet Preferences, which Apple, in a stunningly MS-like maneuver, rather stupidly took out of System Preferences and embedded into Safari. My main browser is Firefox, and I have Mozilla installed because that's our officially supported browser, and there are a few differences between the two. IE is still there because some sites demand IE, and I keep it for testing purposes. I've used it twice in the last six months, I think. You can readily prune applications. If you don't have your mac on all night long on a regular basis, your logfiles (which are normally tidied up at 3AM) can grow stupendously. get a utility like MacJanitor http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html to clean up those ever-growing logfiles. Do NOT go messing about in the System folder. I do that. So I can load just the system I want. I don't use the localized files. I don't use all the extra printer drivers, stuff like that. Plus the computer normally ships with a system that is a couple update back. So I load the newest system str8 on it, so there is no needs to update. I find doing a clean install to the newest system, instead of update, runs a little better. Z If you're sticking with OS X, you don't need any Classic browser. Zoltan, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: ut I only have two. One for everything X and another for all OS 9 stuff. I also have two. One for Applications and the OS X system (8 GB with 4 free at the moment, I don't even have OS 9 drivers) and one for my user home folder, which in it's turn contains a hierarchy of everything I produce and everything connected to my user (me), like settings and add- ons to the machine. My user is an admin, but I'm contemplating turning that off and only turn it on if I need to. This to avoid apps from messing with stuff it shouldn't. In Panther this seems fully doable, but I haven't got into that direction yet. What this setup gives me is a partition that is erasable and re- installable while not affecting my user home folder. Usually, if I do reinstall the OS for some rare reason, the OS will usually give the only admin user the same system ID as before so that user remain the owner of my old home folder. If not, I reclaim my home folder, by using the main admin user that an OS X install normally will give you, and make my user the owner of every file inside my users home folder. Then I delete the new home folder that the installation gave me. Normally I do that in the Terminal with sudo chown -R /UserName, as that under Jaguar was the only reliable way to have the owner changed in every file and folder in the hierarchy. I prefer this to save and install as I can be sure nothing odd goes into the System. I'd probably use a third partition for Apps, if not so many of them wanted to put stuff elsewhere to function properly. So for me, the OS and Apps are quite closely knitted. This setup also give me one central point for backing up; the home folder, which makes it more likely that this will happen on a regular and reliable basis. I usually make an archive of the lot and burn it to DVD if possible. As I'm now reviving my interest in music I'm planning in backing up the music production separately as those probably will fill several DVDs. Or maybe I'll have to get into drive mirroring. I make use of Apples folders for main organization and also have added quite a few of my own. So what I produce goes into Documents (with the exception of email and pictures, no matter what it is as long as I am the producer) and settings and application assisting files that I actively add to the app go into the Library folder, email related files into Email, music I listen to into Music and so on. Under Documents I have my own hierarchy which have evolved during the years (and still is) and some of which I haven't produced, like documentation and facts and knowledge, now go into Library, where appropriate. Some of this stuff is slowly moving into databases I'm working on. The method I use to put the home folder on a separate partition is to change the directory for my user in Netinfo Manager. This method have one flaw, in that it doesn't allow me to change the name of the partition unless I also change it in Netinfo Manager. I'd love to find a method that doesn't rely on the actual path to the home folder. Possibly Symlinks could be better, but I'm not sure about this. The only downside I have experienced is that I've been sloppy in having the same language active when migrating over several machines and at some point the Finder settings for the names of the Applenamed folders inside the user home folder got stuck in english. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I suppose there are ways to achieve this, but the main reason for slowness probably is that you have too little RAM (I say 512 MB is minimum). The iBooks also have a AGP ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics card with 32 MB of DDR video memory while the current Powerbooks have ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (AGP 4X) graphics processor with 64 MB of DDR. While lack of RAM is the most obvious slowdowner in my experience, I haven't experienced any older iBooks as fast. Others may disagree, but this is my opinion from sporadic encounters. is there prefs and whatnot like Classic had The Prefs folder are inside /Users/your_user_name/Library and the application support folder are also there. Some systemwide prefs go into Library/Preferences. Normally, you only have to worry about stuff inside your users Library folder. I suggest you get a Panther related introduction book like Pogues The Missing Manual (Or is that Jaguar only?). It will take a while, but most things will make a lot of sense. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... LCD Screen on new iBook
I was told once (by a dealer) that one of the differences between the G4 P'books and the IceBooks was the quality of the graphics screen - the one on the Powerbooks was better eg, better colour fidelity, better angle of viewing, etc. This must have been 18 months to two years ago, in the days of the 500 and 667 Mhz Powerbooks and the early 14 IceBooks. I looked at both the iBook and PB screens and can tell there is a significant difference. So is the price. Let's face it, you have to pay for quality. The thing that concerns me is the thiness of the screen. It is very thin and flexible. I am worried that this flexibility can cause the screen to bend and crack. With all the discussion about the white spots I have to say that this PB does not seem as portable. I was using a PB Wallstreet and it was seemingly more rugged. I was not that too concerned about the give in the plastic case. I am with the new Aluminum PB. The rest of the PB is fantastic. The keyboard is fantastic and large. Good feel and responsive. The screen is bright and clear. It is so much better than a WallStreet. The speed is wow. This PB definitely has a large awe factor. I am curious if anyone could pass on what they are using to transport and store their Al PB in as they travel. Does anyone know if that was in fact true information? And if so, does anyone know if it's still true with the new iBooks? Tom Burke -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... No hotsync to new Ibook
I've recently bought a new 800mhz 12.1 Ibook and have been thrilled with it, save for the fact that I can't get my palm to hotsync to it. I'm using Palm Desktop v.4 with a Palm IIIc, a Belkin serial-to-USB adapter, and OS 10.2.3. The system profiler seems to know that there is a device on the USB bus but the Palm won't hotsync. I have tried adjusting the connection settings via Palm Desktop/Hotsync settings and also on the IIIc. No dice. Is this combination of hardware incompatible? Do I need some other facet of OSX, such as Isync, to make this work? Is this a known (to everyone but me) problem with OSX and older serial cradle Palms? Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'm in digest mode so forgive if my responses are delayed. Have the best Monday possible everyone, Kent [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... As for the 12 having better performance, perhaps it appears to be so because it renders the smaller screen faster??? Hmm? Do they use the same manufacturer for the LCDs? The graphics card (which does the rendering) doesn't care how big the screen is physically; all it cares about are # of pixels. Thus, size of the screen won't affect performance if the resolution is the same. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... New iBook Options (or lack thereof)
Okay...I just went to the Apple site to order my nice new ibook (the cheapest one...the 600mhz 12.1 incher) and...well...since when did they remove the option to add a combo drive??? Now the only option is to get the 700mhz...for 300 dollars more...which isn't a horrible deal but...come on... Was this option ever there? Or am I going completely mad? I'm wondering if I should just wait to and save up a bit more or deal with not having a dvd-rom...which I don't know if I want to do... any input? Now the only option is to get the 700mhz...for 300 dollars more... Sorry folks, fumble finger magic happens! (I managed to hit whatever key combo automagically sends an email my mistake ...) Well, as a TiBook owner, I can add a drive for 300 bucks, to upgrade from the built in DVD drive, via MCE. If I had a rev b machine, I could have taken that same 300 bucks and gotten the upgrade from apple for 300 when they offered it. So I'd guess they didn't offer it, because to apple the difference is 300 bucks. So you could get the slower machine and add a 300 buck option to it, or get the 300 dollar more machine and have the option and get the speed boost as a freebie *grin*. I am leaning towards the PowerLogix offers 500MHz 'Pismo' PowerBook G3 upgrade for my Pismo which is on special for $299, as I could use a bit more speed for Photoshop. http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0206/14.powerlogix.php Tom Donald Keenan wrote: I went with a 500mhz/30gb Pismo exactly because of the versatility.
