Right on, actually, I have wanted to try the 2.0 version of GIMP. I
have been hearing good things about it. Two questions if you please.

1. Do I enter the command
emerge gimp-2.0_pre2
in order to build & install?

2. Will GIMP 2 exist along side GIMP 1.2 or must I remove 1.2. If they
do exist side by side, what is the executable for 2 called... I mean
1.2 already has 'gimp', so what happens there?

Thank you very much for the information.

Can anyone tell me why the fonts in GIMP look like poop? Ok, that is
not a technical term. What I mean is they are not making smooth edges

Do I need to emerge with a certain flag enabled or disabled?

Thank you.

As a new user of Gentoo, may I ask a dumb question... How would one go

I imagine I need to emege something, then run menuconfig and compile,
but are there instructions someplace on just what to do? And will I be
able to save all my 2.4 related files in case something goes wrong?

Thanks

RE: [gentoo-user] perfomance 2.6.3 <= 2.4 B.S.!!!!!

2004-02-12 Thread Gentoo Lists
No I am not going to have you banded because this is your own opinion.
Your allowed to have one, I actually value that you have your own
opinion cause if you didn't this would be a very bland and borring
world.

You talk about me getting off my high horse but you jump so quickly I
wonder if you think about what your saying let alone what you are
reading. Claiming that you are God, Emperor or General of a Linux group
sounds like someone who has had their feathers ruffled and wants to feel
good about themselves. I have read your previous posts and they read
like rants and not common questions.

I don't doubt your claims cause I haven't tested them either way and
with the way computers are things can differ so drastically I am not
going to get involved cause I am happy with the way my machines and
network perform when running Gentoo or any other distro.

To sum up. I don't mind if you post your kernel problems here but what
to me seems like trying to start an army to fix these problems is not
the way of doing things.

Personally I don't see a lot of difference between my 2.4 kernel
machines and my 2.6 when running as a desktop because running 1/2 dozen
threads really doesn't tax the machine or its software systems. A lot of
this can be put down to my poor human brain and eyes can't capture the
difference.

You really need to think about how you say things rather than what.

Get off the age thing, telling someone that they sound like a kid is
just pathetic and a sign of someone who insecure in themselves. Learn to
take a little criticism especially when it isn't at you but what you are
doing.

Cheers
Simon

Umm... that is complete bull, I think the list is open for such topics
of discussion. I have not had problems with other kernels say on my
Slackware 9.1 boxes/servers..or other computers that I install certain
distros of Linux on.. ? (And I install quite a few systems each month).

Other people have already piped in and agreed with me also.

How can you say it isnt a Gentoo user list issue?

I am using Gentoo, quite happily.. on 8 systems!

And if you have followed any of my posts, You would have seen that I
have pointed out exactly what is going wrong, hoping someone who knows
better can post a fix.

I quote:

"you want someone to be held accountable for a product buy closed
source,
buy Microsoft where you are guaranteed to get the same every time and
have some one to have a go at."

/\ that above my friend is complete bull, are you some kid or something?
I am a President of a Linux Users Group and I help people out with Linux

everyday, I contribute to open source and to even try and tell me to
"buy Microsoft" is another complete line of bull also.

What gives you the right to even say something like that is beyond me.

I am not looking for someone to "be held accountable" I am looking for
an answer to my problem, of which is "Gentoo" related. The sources I get

are from Gentoo ebuilds. So that makes it a "Gentoo" issue.

I will gladly post my complaints and rants to the kernel mailing list,
if that is what it takes.

So what happens next? Are you going to have me banned from the list,
because of my opinions?

Get off your high horse and get a clue.

Thank you

Sincerely,

2004-02-12 Thread Gentoo Lists
I don't want to feed this but what it really comes down to is if your
not happy use the 2.4 kernels or make friendly constructive comments on
the Kernel mailing lists where a developer who has given many many hours
to bring you this nice new kernel can answer and maybe resolve your
issues. Remember all this is free and comes from the love and time of a
select few people who have the knowledge and time to do something like
this.

Ranting and raving on a Gentoo user list is going to get you nowhere. If
you want someone to be held accountable for a product buy closed source,
buy Microsoft where you are guaranteed to get the same every time and
have some one to have a go at.

Open source is about choice. If you don't like one choice make another.
Maybe go to a BSD instead of Linux if it doesn't rock your boat
properly.

Ya, but the issue here is.. a desktop system, running basic programs..
I.E. X, xchat-2, mozilla, [your favorite email client here], fluxbox,
kde < whatever.. and a few Eterms/xterms

There is not any noticeable improvement on speeds.

See here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=116183

And I QUOTE:

"Lovechild wrote:

shipping as well as any patches flowing around on lkml right

So c'mon.. we are all tired of this bull crap.. let us see some hard
evidence that these kernels, esp. the 2.6.X series.. PERIOD are any
better than a 2.4.X kernel

A few of us have solid proof that the 2.6.X kernels actually are very,
very much poorer in performance than the 2.4.X kernels!!

Our hdparm, glxgears and other things to test speed improvements are all

 very bad.

[gentoo-user] kernel 2.6 and vi Segmentation fault

2004-02-04 Thread gentoo
I finally took the plunge after reading various tips and experiences about
the new 2.6 kernel. For the most part, it went fairly smoothly. However,
ever since the upgrade, vi crashes with a segmentation fault when opening
any file greater than 8K:

"XF86Config" [Read only]Segmentation fault

I have unmerged and remerge to no avail. vim works fine. Any ideas?

Got it. Actually I have used the DOS version of this program. Back in

Now the problems start. First I saw nothing on the screen at all. I
turned on local echo, so now I can see the command when I type "at&v",
then I hit enter & nothing. Does this mean something isn't working? Or
does this mean I don't know what I'm doing? PPPD is still active, it's

So, comments? Ideas? Observations? Would it be better if I simply
used the first init string (ATZ) and skip all the others? I don't think
this would help the problem, as under KPPP I was only using ATZ, no
other stings, yet have the same problem there. But would this be better
for the modem I mean?

On the subject of config files, doesn anyone see anything wrong with my
/etc/ppp/options. At the begining you will see the settings that were

It is a *nix system. Not totally sure if it's UNIX or Linux. I'm going
to guess that it's UNIX. My ISP is the college I work for. Linux would
be free, UNIX cost money. Since we waste money like it grows on trees
I'm sure they paid for something. This is compounded by the fact that
no one in the IT department really knows much, and half of them are 19
year old students.

KPPP uses wvdial? I don't mean to argue but are you sure? I just ask
as it don't seem right. I had to install wvdial on my Mandrake system
long after I had already been using KPPP.

I will check this idle timeout and play with that.

Wait, I'm back... there is no idle timeout. I found a pppd timeout and
a modem timeout, and from reading the KPPP help thingy I don't think
those are what you are talking about. I see no idle timeout.
Arrgg.

Thank your for your help.

Yea, the modem has got to be involved somehow. Since it does the same
thing with both Mandrake & Gentoo. Also I used the ISP before with a
different modem and Mandrake and it was fine. And this ISP currently
works fine with this modem and another modem under Winblows. So I'm
pretty certain the modem is involved. I just need to figure out what to
tweak.

RE: [gentoo-user] What to do when emerge cannot d/l a needed file?

2004-01-19 Thread Gentoo Lists
My answers:

1) Not sure, I've had the same problem but since I am using a 2.6.1
kernel I don't need it.
2) use emerge -i gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r5.patch.bz2. This will insert
the package name into the DB making your machine think it is installed
and doesn't need to be downloaded.

Emerge --help if your friend.

Subject: [gentoo-user] What to do when emerge cannot d/l a needed file?

So I'm not quite sure what to do here.

Last night I did an emerge sync; emerge -pu world
and there was a whole long list of things that needed to be emerged
(including
a bunch of ghome libraries to be installed as new installs, even though
I run
KDE and don't run gnome...I wonder what I have installed that now needs
gnome?).

Anyway, I went ahead and emerge -u world. The first few packages
installed
fine, but then it tries to retrieve sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r5.

During that process, it tries to retrieve
http://dev.gentoo.org/~iggy/gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r5.patch.bz2
and there it hangs.

ps aux shows me that it is trying to wget that file, and that hangs for
a long
time and eventually times out, so the emerge process terminates.

So, my questions are:
1) why isn't that file available? I can access it fine in my web
browser, so I
know the site is up and the file is there. Since the wget command (via
ps)
shows the --passive-ftp modifier to wget, made me assume wget is trying
to
retrieve the file via ftp and not http, but netstat shows me that the
socket
is actually connect to the www port and not ftp port on the server, SO,
if I
can retrieve the file via my web browser, why not with wget? I shoudl
also
note that the socket status is SYN_SENT and not ESTABLISHED, so the
connetion
isn't being made.

2) is there a way to tell emerge to try a different server? I should
note here
that my GENTOO_MIRRORS in my conf files does not include dev.gentoo.org,
so
somewherein the emerge sync process that server is specified.

3) Is there any way to tell emerge to just skip this part of the emerge
world?
I don't really need new kernel sources now anyway...

Thanks.

Of course I though of that as soon as I sent the email. I have looked
in /var/log and it's subdirectories. Nothing can I find relating to
this. In fact, very few of any kind of log files.

Yea, I'm always leaving out something. I do have Win98, and the modem
is fine under that. Also I have a second computer beside this one -
winmodem, connects under windows only, works fine. I can be on all day
long. I have too many darn variables here. New OS (MDK 9.1 & Gentoo),
new MoBo and new external modem. I needed new MoBo as the old one died,
new modem as I could not find an internal hardware modem and new OS as
MDK 7.2 (which i used before) is too old to run on this box I would
expect.

I've been using this ISP for years, so it ain't that.

Actually, the phone lines are pretty crappy, but that ain't it either.

It's got to be modem related or something with my configuration. There
are config files in /etc/ppp but I don't know what I'm doing in those
yet. I'm gonna have to hunt down some documentation on those.

Ok, dumb question here, but do you know what log files I should be
looking for? I check 'man wvdial' and it doesn't mention any log files.
I looked in /etc /etc/ppp and /root for anything that looked like a log
file, but no such luck.

> Run emerge -f some_pkg at first, it's doing append by default,

What I did was this: I was trying to update my system, this is a fresh
install. Well, I managed to not even get the first package which is 5M
in size. I got about 60% of it, and in that time the modem hung up on
my about 8 times. After reconnecting I have to CTRL+C out of emerge,
then start up 'emerge -u system' again. It does continue where it left
off, but as you can imagine this is not really a reasonable way for me
to upgrade and install packages.

I am indeed getting a connection to the inet. I just pinged gentoo.org,
no problem.

Additional information, this box also has Mandrake 9.1 on it and I have
the same problem in that OS with both KPPP & wvdial. I can send/receive
email and surf the net, just not for very long.

I hope this is more clear to everyone. Thank you.

[gentoo-user] modem keeps hanging up

2004-01-18 Thread Linux Gentoo
Greetings.

Problem:

When connecting to the internet using wvdial I lose my connection over
and over and over. I get an error code 16 (the modem hung up). Anyone
have an idea what might be going on?

I have an external modem on ttyS0.

While this is annoying, at least wvdial will redial and connect again.
I am trying to download packages for upgrading & installing with emerge.
When I lose my connection then it reconnects, emerge will not restart
the file transfer. Since I can only keep a connection for a short time,
this is proving impossible. Is there a way to have emerge resume the
transfer once the connection is reestablished?

Much thanks.

You can try the low tech way of doing things. Open evolution, and make
sure it is configured so that you can you your local mailbox, and your
IMAP mailbox.
Next, copy each local folder/mail message to the IMAP mailbox.

Re: [gentoo-user] can Gentoo be installed without an internet connection?

2003-12-27 Thread Linux Gentoo
Ok, so I tried installing from stage 1 first, because I wanted to build
my system from nothing. I didn't realize I *had* to have internet
connection so when I entered

scripts/bootstrap.sh

I got the error message about not being able to download portage.

So then I started with stage two, and after I untared it I entered

scripts/bootstrap.sh

I got the error message about not being able to download portage.

So then I got my crap together, and tried to go from stage 3. So I
untared it, and since I had read the instructions -- hell, even
highlighted the commands -- I knew what to do next. I entered

scripts/bootstrap.sh

I got the error message about not being able to download portage.

Well duh

Just goes to show, there is a difference between *reading* the f---ing
manual, and *understanding* the f---ing manual.

Oh well. I'm learning. After that, my Gentoo install went pretty well.
I still have one problem which I will be posting about soon, but over
all I'm very pleased with Gentoo so far. Looks like a great distro.

Re: [gentoo-user] can Gentoo be installed without an internet connection?

2003-12-26 Thread Linux Gentoo
Ok, I found my mistake. As I suspected I was reading the directions
"wrong" shall we say. Almost everything is good, and I have a system
that is close to working the way I want. I won't tell you what my
mistake was because I'm a total idiot

Thanks

[gentoo-user] can Gentoo be installed without an internet connection?

2003-12-25 Thread Linux Gentoo
I still get the same thing:

'Couldn't download portage-2.0.49-r4.tar.bz2. Aborting.'

I assume it is possible to install Gentoo on a computer that is not on a
network/internet. Can someone please explain how?

Thank you.

I should have mentioned that I don't have a network/gateway. So
naturally I did not configure any such thing. I'm trying to install
from the CDs with no internet involved.

So no, I am not doing emerge sync or emerge rsync.

On a unrelated note, do we reply at the top or the bottom of post on
this list? Some people are pretty serious about this topic, and I hate
to tick off people, especially when I'm asking for help. =)

Thank you

[gentoo-user] install confusion

2003-12-23 Thread Linux Gentoo
Greetings all. I am trying to install Gentoo, and not making progress.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have used and installed Linux
before, Debian & Mandrake, so I am not a total newbie, but by no means
do I claim to be a master of the command line either. Here is the deal.

I have the x86 and the P4 optimized versions, live CDs, both CDs for
each. I have tried installing on two different computers, and from
stage 1 and from stage 2. I end up with the same result:

couldn't download portage-2.0.49-r4.tar.bz2. aborting

I have the PDF install instructions printed out and I am following along
with them. I assume I must be reading something wrong, skipping a
section or just a plain idiot

When I do the following commands -->

tar -xvjf /mnt/cdrom/snapshots/portage-20030911.tar.bz2 -C
/mnt/gentoo/usr

cp -R /mnt/cdrom/distfiles /mnt/gentoo/usr/protage/distfiles

cp -a /mnt/cdrom/packages /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/packages

--> suppose to arrange things so that I don't need to download this
portage file? I've tried installing 5 times now, sure that I was just
missing a step. Whatever it is, I keep right on missing it.

Can someone please knock me on the side of the head?
Thank you very much.
Adrian

[gentoo-user] glftpd 1.32 and baselayout 1.8.6.12-r2

2003-12-04 Thread Gentoo LB

Hello ..

Anyone successful at all getting glftpd to run zipscripts under the gentoo
environment?

Is there still a need for hacking xinetd?

If anyone does have this working, please post your scripts or email them to
me ..

I only ask this because I still can not get my glftpd to function using
zipscripts ..

Yes I am aware of the bug posted on the bugs site, but none of this helps ..
the forums are also of no help..

Thanks

[gentoo-user] xmame and keyboard issues

2003-11-27 Thread gentoo
Whenever I play xmame, I have trouble with the keyboard. Gameplay is
just fine for the first few minutes, and then I cannot stop moving. If
I am moving to the left across the screen, and release the arrow key, my
character keeps moving to the left. I can still jump, shoot, etc. I
can also reverse direction, but again, my character just keeps moving.

Just wondering if anyone has run across this, or a solution.

Thanks,

K

Re: [gentoo-user] optimum disk performance

2003-10-30 Thread gentoo-user
Does forcing UDMA5 using -X69 help any? I tested both ways but didn't notice

any difference.

Does anyone know of a shell script that will test all the optimal settings? I

build a lot of systems and it's a drag always testing different settings. A
script that could probe and test a few sets of settings and output the best
possible settings would be really cool!

i dont have a /var/qmail/.spamassassin so what is it trying to do here?

what i do have are settings in /etc/mail/spamassassin that look like this ..

# SpamAssassin config file for version 2.5x
# generated by http://www.yrex.com/spam/spamconfig.php (version 1.01)

# How many hits before a message is considered spam.

ok_languagesall

# Mail using locales used in these country codes will not be marked
# as being possibly spam in a foreign language.
ok_locales all

not sure if they are all needed ..

in my /var/vpopmail/domains/ directory i have a file mailfilter
in it is the following

import EXT
import HOST
import HOME

SPAMBOX=".Spam"
VERBOSE=0
logfile "/var/log/maildrop-filter-log"
SHELL="/bin/sh"
VHOME=`/var/vpopmail/bin/vuserinfo -d
VDOMHOME=`/var/vpopmail/bin/vdominfo -d $HOST`
VPOP=`cat $VDOMHOME/.qmail-default`
#VPOP="$VHOME/Maildir/"

if ((/^X-Spam-Status:.*YES/))
{
 `test -d $VHOME/Maildir/.Spam`
 if( $RETURNCODE == 1 )
 {
 `/usr/bin/maildirmake $VHOME/Maildir/.Spam;chown -R vpopmail.vpopmail
$VHOME/Maildir/.Spam`
 `echo "INBOX.Spam" >> $VHOME/Maildir/courierimapsubscribed`
 }
 to "$VHOME/Maildir/.Spam/"
}

to "$VHOME/Maildir/"
it works with /var/vpopmail/domains/domain.com/user/.qmail
which reads
> /var/qmail/bin/preline /usr/bin/maildrop /var/vpopmail/domains/mailfilter

it basically triggers the mailfilter file, creats a directory called Spam
and puts the suspected spam in that folder ..

problems?
1. it doesnt tag the mail in anyway..
2. it doesnt seem like everything is set up correctly ..
3. why is it that its looking for the .spamassassin directory?
4. is it not reading the local.cf file?
5. is my setup correct?

can anyone give me a hand with this .. as to why i get these errors in
syslog and how i can start stamping the mail as spam?

also i am running
qmail
spamassassin
qmail-scanner
courier-imap
clamav
squirrelmail

Re: [gentoo-user] alsa/btaudio problem

2003-10-22 Thread gentoo
I have done a little more investigating, and have revised what I believe
is happenning.

On boot, the alsa driver for emu10k1 is loaded, however, no /dev/dsp is
crated at this time.
Next, the btaudio driver is loaded, and it creates /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1
for the analog and digital outs.

When doing this manually, the same thing happens. I can make it work
though, if I do the following:
/etc/init.d/alsasound start - drivers load, no /dev/dsp exists
mpg123 somesong.mp3 - after playing an mp3, /dev/dsp now exists
modprobe btaudio - loads and creates /dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp2

How to I get /dev/dsp to be created without resorting to my manual
process?

Thanks,

KB

[gentoo-user] alsa/btaudio problem

2003-10-21 Thread gentoo
When I boot, I do not get any sound on my box.

Starting KDE gives the following message:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
can't set requested samplingrate (requested rate 44100, got rate 32000)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I have done some investigation on this, and this is what seems to be
happening:
In looking at the output of dmesg, the btaudio driver gets loaded, and
creates /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1 for analog and digital audio. After my
bttv drivers are loaded, the alsa drivers are loaded for my emu10k1.

Now when I rmmod the btaudio driver and do /etc/init.d/alsasound restart,
and then modprobe btaudio everything works. /dev/dsp is my soundcard, and
/dev/dsp1 and 2 are the analog/digital audio from btaudio.

How do I get my alsa drivers to load before the btaudio driver when
booting my computer?

I tried at the /etc/modules* config files, and did not see anything there.

Thanks,

[gentoo-user] problem installing cyrus-sasl

2003-10-10 Thread gentoo
I'm trying to install sendmail. One of it's requirements is
cyrus-sasl. The package keeps failing for me when I try to emerge
it. Below is a few of the last lines of the emerge log, followed by
a shar file containing the entire log. I tried emerging pam_krb5 in
hopes that this would fix the problem (my guess at what was wrong
based on all the "krb5_" error messages), but it didn't help.

For the unenlightedned, here's how to get the log file from this email.
save the entire email to a file on your linux box (I'll call the file
"email" as an example). Edit "email" with your favorite text editor
and delete all the lines from the top of the file to the
"#!/bin/sh" line, so that this line is the top of the file. Save
and exit and run "sh ./email". This will put a file in your /tmp
directory called 302-cyrus-sasl-2.1.14.log.gz. gunzip that and there's
your log file. Sorry if this is a pain, but it was a 57k file before
I zipped it up. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I guess I wasn't clear. THe problem wasn't with grub, but with portage.
I did manage to fix it by:

# cd /
# tar -jxvf /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/files/portage-rescue-2.0.47-r10-x86.tbz2
# emerge sync
# emerge -u portage
# etc-update
# env-update
# emerge grub

All is well now. I'd be curious to know if the above steps were even
close to standard practices for recovering a corrumpted emerge system.

Thanks,

[gentoo-user] Building packages for another system

2003-10-01 Thread gentoo
Sorry if this is duplicate. I thought I'd sent it already, but wasn't seeing
it come back to me.

I'm looking for options to upgrade a system that's currently
running another distribution of linux to Gentoo. This system is
doing production work, so I want to minimize downtime and have a way
to backout the new load if I'm having problems. I have an extra hard
drive that I could swap in.

I've heard that there are ways to prebuild binaries from Gentoo
sources to speed up an install, but I can't find them documented
anywhere.

Is it an option to stick the hard drive in a different computer
and install Gentoo, or will it not likely boot once moved?

Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

[gentoo-user] Creating a Gentoo kiosk PC

2003-09-02 Thread gentoo-user
I was wondering if anyone has tried to build a kiosk Gentoo system?

I need to build out a touchscreen system running linux which boots a minimal
install, loads X - does an autologin and starts an application. I have built a
RedHat box which can do this but would much rather use Gentoo since I like it
alot and I can control what gets installed.

I have gotten my Gentoo distro up and running with touch on the required
hardware for the project but I was wondering what do I need besides Xfree in
order to accomplish my task?

I was reading about gdm which has a built in autologin feature but it requires
GNOME or at least it tells me it does when I do the emerge. I used gdm on my
RedHat box to get the autologin to work but it seems like overkill for what I'm
trying to accomplish.

I also looked online and found a couple good articles but they all refered to
RedHat which I will try to garnish information from but any real world help
would be great.

Hi everybody..

Every time I use emerge -S to look for something I've got to wait an eternity

turn the whole portage system (the pseudo database I mean) into mysql, what
do you think about that?

As far I could see It's not so hard to translate. In this moment I'm writing
a bash script (no pyhton knowledge sorry) to try to full the mysql database
with the portage data.

And obviusly the benefits are a lot.

So.. I'm expecting your thoughts about this.

[gentoo-user] changed USE flags, how to tell emerge what to rebuild?

2003-08-01 Thread list-gentoo-user
Hi folks,

After having changed a whole bunch of USE flags in my make.conf, how
do I know what I need to rebuild? It doesn't appear that an

 emerge -up world

does the trick. I tried etcat from gentoolkit, which does provide the
USE flags that affect a particular specified package, but I was hoping
for a utility that would print out a list that I could then feed to
emerge to actually perform the build. Does something like that exist?

I understand what it means in this instance, what I'm saying is that
it's misleading because (as was pointed out earlier), they're really
treated by portage as distinct packages.

In this case, the lack of an "R" may tip someone off, but that is not
sufficient in all cases. In the reverse situation (someone has
gtk-1.x.y installed, and they are going to emerge gtk-2.x.y), there is
nothing to inform the user whether the bracketed version, [1.x.y]
would be deinstalled as a result of the emerge, because the "R" flag
would not apply either way.

I think that it would be clearer if a different notation were chosen
for "highest version installed of a different slot", and the bracketed
form were kept for "installed version of the same slot".

Then that [2.2.1] after gtk+-1.2.10-r10 is quite misleading! It also

[gentoo-user] install question: mounting /mnt/gentoo/proc

2003-07-24 Thread list-gentoo-user
I've begun to install Gentoo 1.4_rc4, and I noticed that it's telling
me to mount the proc filesystem with the following command:

mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc

I seem to recall that earlier versions of the install document had me
mount it with:

mount -o bind -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc

And the '-o bind' was significant because the bootstrap system already
has a proc filesystem mounted.

My question: is this an omission in the new instructions, or is '-o bind'
no longer necessary?

These set colors for use in gui mode (i.e. gvim). If you're using (text mode) vim
from Konsole or another xterm equivalent, you'll want to
do something like the highlight command below.
hi Normal ctermfg=LightGray ctermbg=Black cterm=NONE

The way to produce specific colors can vary depending on your terminal. If you're
using konsole-16color, for example, bright foreground
colors and bright background colors can be specified as BrightBlue for example. On
some terminals bright foreground colors have to be
specified using cterm=bold and bright backgrounds are not available. In a couple
terminals, bright backgrounds can be achieved by using
the blink attribute (cygwin and putty for example). If anyone is interested, I've
hacked together a terminfo addendum to make this
simpler.

Do a :h hi for more complete docs. You can place your custom colors in a file
~/.vim/colors/whatever.vim. Start that file with:
let g:colors_name="whatever"
hi clear

And fill the rest with your highlighting commands. Then you can put "color whatever"
in your .vimrc, or type :color whatever in vim to load
your color file.

If you want to see the same colors in your xterm as you do on the console (which I
think is nice), here are the hex equivalents to
configure your xterm with. These are the colors that date to prehistoric times:
0: Black #00
1: DarkRed #AA
2: DarkGreen #00AA00
3: Brown #AA5500
4: DarkBlue #AA
5: DarkMagenta #AA00AA
6: DarkCyan #00
7: LightGray #AA
8: DarkGray #55
9: LightRed #FF
10: LightGreen #55FF55
11: Yellow #55
12: LightBlue #FF
13: LightMagenta #FF55FF
14: LightCyan #55
15: White #FF

[gentoo-user] Latitude LS & Gentoo working...

2003-07-03 Thread gentoo-user
Hello,

I have gotten Gentoo and a Latitude LS up and running but have found some weird
issues:

NIC works
LT Modem works
X works

Running 1.4RC4 from stage 1 and here are weird issues I have found:

Using BIOS A09

The sound works properly but I get cracks during MP3 playback using XMMS
I am using the kernel driver nm256

If I send a reboot it hangs at the POST screen
Not sure why this occurs and it's not always consistent

If I send a reboot the system reboots but hangs in the kernel
Doing cold boots seems to resolve the issue for both reboot problems
Should I set the BOIS to "Windows" support, currently I have it set
 to "other"

If any one needs help with setting up a Lat LS I can send you my install
notes :)

Thanks

Well, I'm biased towards this game, but I'd recommend Tribes2. If
you've never played it, you should. It's simply the best team-based
online multiplayer game I've ever seen. The windows versions are
selling for approx $15, but the Linux port is still original price I
think $39(?). I actually bought both versions and still feel like I
ripped someone off. You'll need a speedy system for this (NVidia is
essential).

[gentoo-user] Two Realtek NICs In One Machine (8139too)

2003-03-14 Thread Stroller (Gentoo Lists)
Folks,

I'm hoping someone can advise me & improve my understanding of how
modules are / can be loaded by the kernel.

I have a RealTek 8139 which has been
installed in my Gentoo box for some time. It has always been the only
network card in that machine, and it is loaded by the entry `8139too`
in /etc/modules.autoload. All works fine & fluffy.

Today I had cause to add a second network card, a PCI RealTek 8129
(that's: 81_2_9). The 8139too module appears to be also suitable for
this card so recompiled my kernel with the appropriate additional
option enabled for this module.

Afterwards:
 stroller # grep 8139 /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_8139CP=m
CONFIG_8139TOO=m
# CONFIG_8139TOO_PIO is not set
# CONFIG_8139TOO_TUNE_TWISTER is not set
CONFIG_8139TOO_8129=y
# CONFIG_8139_OLD_RX_RESET is not set
 stroller #

I have `cp /etc/init.d/net.eth0 /etc/init.d/net.eth0` as suggested by
the docs at Gentoo.org <http://tinyurl.com/7i8s>, and added a second
line to /etc/conf, but `/etc/init.d/net.eth1 start` gives the same
result as:

stroller # ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.44 broadcast
192.168.1.255 netmask 255.255.255.0
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
eth1: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
stroller #

What I'm guessing is that I need in some way to call modprobe in such a
way that it also configures for my 8129, or at least I need to tell it
where to look for it. Both cards seem to be recognised at some level by
the kernel:

This <http://tinyurl.com/7i95> Usenet posting and some other stuff I've
read about "options" seems to point the right way, but I'm obviously
just not grasping something. In particular, `grep eth
/etc/modules.conf` draws a blank on my system, and that file is
commented not to be human-editable, anyway.

Perhaps someone can suggest something..?

Many thanks in advance for time & bandwidth,

Stroller.

What exactly is emu10k1? I was told it was a collection of utilities to

wouldn't have used them in conjunction with the kernel.

By the way, which would you recommend: the emerge package or kernel sound?
I need the card for 5.1 sound with altec lansing ada 995. I do not use

I'll grant you this one. In fact I can see one instance where I
wouldn't bother looking at the config file: if the einfo informed me
that the changes consisted of adding the paths of package components, I
would assume the ebuild knew where it installed them and got the config
file correct.

I would never make such an argument. Sorry that it came across that
way. My concern is that the "improvements" don't jepordize the
integrity of my system. If that requirement is accepted, including
giving me the ability to be paranoid when I feel it necessary, I'm all
for simplifying things.

Assuming that the person is replacing the files with inspecting the
diffs, yes. However, I always inspect the diffs so there are times an
auto-replace would be less safe.

So I'm rare, eh? I wonder how much I would fetch at Christy's...

I don't think the maintaner could be talked into removing it anyway so
this is a non-issue.

Those would be important to me as well before I would consider using an
auto-replace feature. Since I've thought of at least one instance where
auto-replace would be useful, maybe adding the option "auto-replace all
remaining config files" would be a good compromise. Then the person who
doesn't want to see all the diffs could select that the first time
etc-update presents him with its menu while someone like me could go
through the configs like now and select the option when there are just a
few left that are known safe to auto-replace. Probably should even be
added as a command line option for someone who is going to auto-replace
all the config files.

[gentoo-user] Undefined reference to errno

2003-03-10 Thread gentoo
All,

I attempted to upgrade to the latest gentoo release last night, and
'emerge -e world' kept failing on me. I know at least on the latest mysql,
krb, and cron packages. I kept getting 'undefined reference to errno'
errors. I thought I had screwed up the upgrade, and decided to reinstall.
Unluckily for me, I got the same darn error again on kerberos -- this time I
have a -mysql -- so no problem there yet.

I've heard that there was a change in glibc that caused this, and the problem
actually lies with the packages lack of '#include '.

Can I get some type of confirmation on this? Has anyone had this problem with
the latest gentoo release?

Thanks,

-Mark

Another poor soul who saw the very fancy stuff you can do with some
strange, complicated rules and now thinks they all have to be that
way...

If all you want to do is sort mail to different folders based upon
content, all it takes is three short lines. Here's an example from my
.procmailrc:

:0
* ^(From|Return-Path|To):*.(Cbmccandless|skfan127)
Personal-Cheryl/

Here's the explanation...

The first line indicates the start of a recipe that does not use a lock.
I use the maildir structure. If you used the traditional Unix mail spool
structure, then you would need a lock which would be indicated by adding
another ":" after the "0".

The second line is the filter. The "* " indicates that this is the
filter expression. Everything after that is a regular expression. If
it matches a portion of an email, the email is acted upon in accordance
with the rule(s) in the third line. This filter is simply looking for
any email with the userids of "Cbmccandless" or "skfan127" in the
"From:", "Return-Path:", or "To:" header fields.

The third line tells what to do with matched emails. You can get very
fancy here if you wish. The admin account at my last contract had a
recipe that watched for emails from the intrusion detection system
indicating a possible security breach. When such an email was received,
a copy was forwarded to all the system admins, their pagers were
triggered and caused to display 911, and the breached system was
disconnected from the net.

Obviously I have nothing so fancy here. Because the most common action
is to place the email in a folder, you tell procmail to do so by simply
giving the folder name. If it has a trailing "/", procmail will use the
maildir format, otherwise it will use the mbox format.

As you can see, it's nice and simple. In fact, no harder than the
filtering built into some email clients. On the other hand, it will
allow you to create some very powerful filters and rules that you cannot
do with any email client's built in filtering. You can literally do
anything to your email using procmail if you take the time to learn it's
advanced features. One of the top list servers used is nothing more
than a bunch of procmail filters and rules. It's the advanced stuff
that seems to freak people out although most would never have any reason
to use it.

The directories that you are creating are being created in the file
system that the liveCD creates in RAM so that you will have mount points
for your hard drive partitions. As for why it says there is already a
/mnt/gentoo mount point: It was probably added to the liveCD image and
someone forgot to remove that step from the instructions.

Works that way on US keyboards. The two alt keys have different scan

My guess would be Gentoo's support for multiple versions of gcc.
That would make it very difficult to determine what is removable

Re: [gentoo-user] etc-update

2003-03-06 Thread gentoo
Still not a good thing. There could be some new option in the config
file that needs setting. Anyway, with the exception of the XFree
upgrade , we're not talking about a lot of time reviewing config
files. The longest I've ever spent other than the XFree upgrade was
five minutes. And that was after I had been in the hospital over a
month and a lot of stuff had changed.

So with the present system, we're looking at 15-20 minutes once or twice
a year for XFree. Add in 5 minutes monthly or 2-3 minutes if you
upgrade more often than monthly (nightly for me). Does not seem like a
hardship to me for the peace of mind of not having any changes made
unknowingly to my system.

Maybe you can get the maintaner of etc-update to add such a feature.
I'll never use it. Just one screwed up config file will cost me more
time debugging than it looks like I would spend in a year reviewing
updated config files.

I may completely wrong here but I thought I saw a post emerge message
recently about there no longer being a need for a 'games' group. Or is
that the case only for certain specific games?

AFAIK mozilla and phoenix use the same run script and when they crash I
have to do 'killall -9 phoenix-bin' or 'killall -9 run-mozilla.sh'. After
that they run fine until of course the next time they crash. My
experience with these browsers is dire. I can only flash and svg plugin
support improves which is what seems to be crashing these browsers in my
case.

SubSection "extmod"
# Option"omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension

The '#' in front of the Option allowed VMware to go full screen @
this end.

[gentoo-user]usb-storage -- please help me!

2003-02-05 Thread gentoo-user-return-7069-archive=mail-archive . com
Longtime gentoo user, confused about what I'm seeing with usb-storage.

What works:
I currently have a usb camera card reader that accepts cf/sm. I have a handful of cf
cards, each of which I can access as /dev/sdb1 and mount via fstab. I can swap them
out all day long and not have a problem.

What doesn't work:
I have a usb2 hba and usb2 external harddrive enclosure with swappable drive trays
(very nice!) ... watching /var/log/messages, when I plug the unit in I get a usb event
but no /dev assignment. If I have hotplug running first, I get a /dev assignment and
can access the disk as normal. However, if plugged in prior to hotplug running, the
only way I can currently get the /dev assignment is a reboot, followed by hotplug then
plugging the device in.

And worse:
Whether or not hotplug is running, if the device is removed (cable unplugged), the
drives swapped and the device re-added, the computer still reports the same harddrive
attached. It actually reports the same drive attached even when unplugged. The end
result is this: once the second drive is in place, any attempt to access it results in
a hang. The system doesn't hang, but the shell does and requires a reboot to clear.

These symptoms appear with both monolithic and modular kernels. I'm running gentoo 1.2
with all software at latest ebuild levels, kernel 2.4.20 with latest xfs merged.
Kernel options include usb, uhci/ehci/sg/sd, etc.

Any clues? A RTFM is warmly welcomed if you tell me WHAT to read. I don't know if
hotplug is even necessary for this, as I've never needed it for my cf/sm reader.

Thanks for ANY help!

[gentoo-user] Installation Issue SCSI

2003-01-31 Thread gentoo-user

Hello I'm trying to load Gentoo onto my Dell Precision 430 and I believe I do
not have the module needed to load the LSI card. I think I verified that by
booting up United Linux 1.0 and having a look at the loaded modules:

LSIFC9xx/LSI409xx mptscsih

Could anyone point me to a place where I could download this module so I may
install it via floppy. I am running 1.4 RC2 CD. Or should I compile support for
this on another Gentoo system and copy by way of floppy?

Any help would be great since I have never done this before and I am unsure if
this will even work...
