[gentoo-user] Re: Problems emerging JBOSS

2006-01-13 Thread Catalin Trifu
Hi,

You could try to
ebuild /usr/portage/... unpack
Tweak the file you say is the cause for the problem and then
ebuild /usr/portage/... merge
This should compile JBOSS with the modifications u made and
merge it into the world.

You are probably right that I should do an install with GRP packages but the
problem is that this is a family PC. I have 5 other people using this system.
I annoyed all of them when I hard pressed and removed Windows. Now if I do a
GRP install, then first I'll have to customise it according to everyone's
needs and then once again when I complete the amd64 system. Not only does
this put more load on me, but also gives the other members a chance to mock
me and say, "Windows would have been far better".

If this current idea (by Zac) of compiling a kernel and drivers under stage 3
doesn't work, then I'll surely do a GRP install. BTW thanks for sticking with
this thread for so long and not getting annoyed :-)

I thought of one more thing I want to try. I'm going back one version of

[gentoo-user] Problems emerging JBOSS

2006-01-13 Thread Felipe Ribeiro
Hi,

I'm trying to install JBoss 3.2.5, but i'm having a problem.

The file that comes in the package, says that the javac.target is 1.2,
but this version of jboss must work with 1.5, so i've got this message
while trying "emerge jboss"

[execmodules] javac: target release 1.2 conflicts with default source
release 1.5

There's a file, task.properties that set this value, is there any way
to change this to install JBoss?
I tried to alter the .tar.bz2 file just changing the file that
contains this information, but then i get a digest error.

Any suggestion?

OK. Here is where I am now:

I did the five things I posted earlier. I even re-emerged my java stuff and
glibc with the ntpl stuff. Still no go here. May try to emerge Mozilla
again. Could this have anything to do with the gcc upgrade? I also added
the -gnome in my USE line a while back to if that matters.

This is my USE line in make.conf:

USE="acl acpi alsa amd arts artsd artswrappersuid -bonobo cdr chroot

pysol scanner scribus sse tcltk tiff tkinter truetype tuxracer udev usb X xml

I'm about to start a emerge -ev world. Is there anything wrong with this USE
line before I start?

I don't know of anything else to try unless you guys know of something.

nptl is "native posix threading library"! What it means is that since
the 2.6 kernel now supports threads natively, that glibc can call the
APIs in the kernel for thread creation and synchronization, instead of
simulating it with another library (libpthread).

So if you have +nptl, programs have the option of using native threads
instead of pthreads. This is usually a good thing, as native thread
synchronization mechanisms are significantly faster than pthreads.

Using +nptlonly causes libpthreads to not be built at all (actually it
is, but just a set of stubs around the native methods). This forces
all applications to use native threads.

There are some behavior differences between nptl and posix threads
that caused some problems with applications early on. However, I
personally have been using nptlonly for a while (I don't remember
exactly when I turned it on), without any trouble. In fact, AFAIK,
nobody has reported any trouble with nptlonly recently.

bugs.gentoo.org only returns 2 open bugs relating to nptl, one while
building an older version of mozilla-firefox that nobody has been able
to reproduce, and another indicating that +nptl +nptlonly or -nptl
-nptlonly are the only sane options currently.

Ah, you are right. Looking at the comm.jar I see a bunch of .xul
(interface definition), .css, and .js (javascript, not java!) files.

Still, I remember that libpthread used signals, although I'm not sure
exactly what signal, for thread synchronization. So all of the SIGRTs
with nothing else occuring is still making me think that maybe there
is a threading issue here.

Honestly, I dunno what nptl is. I generally leave USE stuff alone unless I
KNOW it is something I don't need or someone tells me I don't need it. I
went through this recently with the gnome USE flag.

I'm in the process of doing this right now:

1) emerge -C mozilla
2) delete the heck out of /usr/lib/Mozilla.  :-)  Maybe up arrow and hit
return one more time for good measure.  ;-)
3) emerge xorg one more time, for good measure.
4) emerge mozilla
5) Say prayer that it works, even though it has not worked yet.  ;)

I'm on number 4 at the moment. It should be close to done, somewhere close
anyway. If not, I'm going to shoot it. LOL

Thanks for the help. I just hope this works. I don't guess it could get any
worse. Oh, after I re-emerge xorg I logged out, reset the GUI and logged
back in again.

Wish me luck. If not, I'll be back. O_O

And from what Dale sent me it looks like the same thing. It sort of
just ends at:

[pid 3564] open("/usr/lib/mozilla/chrome/comm.jar", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE

[pid 3550] --- SIGRTMIN (Unknown signal 32) @ 0 (0) ---
Process 3566 attached

[pid 3564] --- SIGRTMIN (Unknown signal 32) @ 0 (0) ---
[pid 3550] --- SIGRTMIN (Unknown signal 32) @ 0 (0) ---

This is making me think there is some kind of java or plugin problem,
since .jar files are essentially java libraries.

Dale, do you have +nptl +nptlonly for glibc? I didn't see those in
your emerge --info output.

My memory is a little fuzzy, but I remember someone on this list had a

> libXxf86misc.so.1", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

Actually, this is perfectly normal. The linker goes through it's
search path for libraries, trying to load each library from each
directory in /etc/ld.so.conf. It is typical to see many failures
until the right directory is found. For example:

("/usr/lib/mozilla/libXxf86vm.so.1", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT
("/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libXxf86vm.so.1", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT
("/usr/lib/libXxf86vm.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3

As long as it found it somewhere, it is ok.

Interestingly, for those of you using prelink, you won't see this
search for pre-linked binaries. It is part of what makes prelinked
systems a bit faster:

strace -e open -f /usr/bin/xdpyinfo >/dev/null
open("/usr/lib/libXext.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/usr/lib/libX11.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3
open("/usr/lib/libXtst.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3

It is actually quite normal. The mozilla binary searches through the
system library paths for libs, and uses the first one it finds. It is
quite normal for the strace to have many files that doesn't exist.

Though, it seems that mozilla didn't even quite make it to starting in
that last strace: it took Dale 30 minutes, and it still hasn't gotten
around to loading the chrome components.

I couldn't see anything obviously wrong from the trace, though someone
else might have better insight.

Which one are you looking at? I have the 2005FPW (the 20"
widescreen). I got a great deal on it by watching hot-deals.org
everyday until there was a sale and an Internet coupon. I upgraded
from a 19" nonflat CRT.

The monitor itself is great; no complaints. Works perfectly with my
hardware (Vid card = nVidia ti4200 AGP). FYI, here's the modeline I
use:

Modeline "1680x1050" 119.0 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 -hsync +vsync

The only other thing to look out for is font setup. I had to spend
a bit of time reading up how to get my fonts to look good. It
wasn't hard, as there's tons of documentation out there that
describes getting nice fonts in X.

Having said that, in hindsite, I think I'd prefer to have *two* 20"
4:3 LCDs running side by side (rather than one widescreen). Just my
personal opinion, but that goofy resolution the 2005FPW uses
(1680x1050) is kind of awkward---any interesting desktop background
you find will either need to be stretched, cropped or tiled.

I certainly don't regret buying it at all. I'd just recommend
thinking through what kind of apps you regularly use, and how they'd
be affected running at 1680x1050. For me, the main thing I wanted
was the ability to run a terminal right next to Firefox without
resorting to a tiny resolution. And now I have that :)

Also, my friend has the 24" (2405FPW). He runs Windows, and I
didn't look at it too long, but that thing is MASSIVE. Makes mine
look tiny. But for the price, you could buy two of the one I have!

Hope that helps,
Good luck,
Matt

I'm not _absolutely_ positive, but to do so would likely result in _slower_
code, maybe breaking even occasionally. Using C/C++ as the language:

- blocks of multiply-compiled code can be no larger than a single fuction, as
the compiler does not know what other functions call that function, and given
current build systems, _cannot_ know. Exceptions: inline functions count
where the function is inlined, and file-scope (static) functions can be
optimized together, but only if they are only called by other file-scope
functions, as the compiler can generate a complete list of callers.

- the code must be recalculated and duplicated not just for each technology,
but for each meaningful and distinct combination of technologies, meaning
more conditionals and more branches (and larger code)

- code size plays a large role in program performance. Many people report that
gcc -Os often gives faster executables than gcc -O3

- How far back do you want to go? Each generation (and brand) of processors
adds new technologies and techniques, and the fastest code for one processor
may be the slowest for another.

I'm thinking about getting one of the Dell Widescreen Ultrasharp LCD

Has anyone used one under Gentoo (x86) and how good is it?

Y-windows is dead. Based on the mailing list archives, nobody is
working on it. It is also hard-masked pending removal from portage.
The basic problem seems to be that when XFree forked to X.org, the
need for and interest in Y-windows evaporated.

The most interesting graphics work today is being done by
freedesktop.org, including x.org.

OK. I did do a emerge -C mozilla once. I even re-emerged xorg too. What
about this:

1) emerge -C mozilla
2) delete the heck out of /usr/lib/Mozilla. :-) Maybe up arrow and hit
return one more time for good measure. ;-)
3) emerge xorg one more time, for good measure.
4) emerge mozilla
5) Say prayer that it works, even though it has not worked yet. ;)

That sound like a reasonable plan you think? Should I take out the gnome flag
that I put back in my USE line? I thought that may have broke something
because that was the last thing I changed.

Should I really start looking at that hard drive you think? Something
happened to those files. I didn't even know where they were until today.
LOL I promise, I didn't do it.

Thanks

These mean the blocks are corrupt, and cannot be read. Whatever was
on those blocks is now lost.

I was able to resurrect a drive with a similar problem with:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=32k

!DANGER! the above command will destroy all data on the drive...but by
writing to those sectors you can cause the drive to remap them to
sectors reserved for that purpose.

You can then check that the drive is working with:

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/null bs=32k

If either command fails, then it is time to replace the drive. In my
case, that drive was still working perfectly 18 months later when I
sold it to someone else.

In any case, time to make sure you have a good backup.

what that file was on my system:

H perhaps an X problem? Looking at the other files that are not
being found, they sure look a lot like X files as well (no pun intended):

libXinerama.so.1", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
libXp.so.6", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

libXxf86misc.so.1", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

and so on. I mean, honestly, look at the path below:

[pid 6829] open("/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libXxf86misc.so.1", O_RDONLY)
= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

I cannot imagine that there is any valid configuration that puts
libXxf86 anything in /usr/lib/mozilla/*plugins*, of all places.

I don't want to speculate on how this might have happened, but if I was
you, I would

1) unmerge Mozilla completely (don't worry, your profile is in your
~/folder, so none of your personal settings or mail will be lost);

2) delete all /usr/lib/Mozilla folders

3) re-emerge X.org (yes I know, it takes forever, but clearly something
is very seriously borked if Mozilla thinks that the X libs are in its
own install folders, since the only one who would likely have told it
that is X itself)

4) re-emerge Mozilla.

5) pray.

I was pretty sure they were in there somewhere and that they could be saved.
My big worry is that something !may! be corrupt and copying them over may
mess up Mozilla again.

That said, I think Mozilla is borked as a application and has nothing to do
with any user at all. I'm wondering if my hard drive is what is causing this
but I am not getting any other errors so I'm clueless.

I may try a emerge -e world but I am moving on with the new install on my
other hard drive. Something is going to work.

Thanks for the comment though Holly. If yours survived coming across the
pond, mine should be OK too.

Anybody have any new ideas? Still curious about that emerge -e world.
Couldn't hurt. It would just slow down my other install.

OK, the file is online at

It doesn't look like permissions or so were the problem though. Maybe
just let strace write everything to a file (strace -olog mozilla). The

You don't need to open Mozilla to save your email and bookmarks.

They are in your profile folder:

bookmarks.html (in
~/.mozilla//.xlt/bookmarks.html) is your
bookmarks file

and your mail is in well, I admit I don't quite know the exact path,
because I am 1) a Thunderbird user (so my mail would be in
~/.thunderbird rather than ~/.mozilla, except that I) 2) put my mail in
a specific folder rather than the default.

But look in your ~/.mozilla//.xlt/ folder
and see if there isn't a folder in there called "Mail", which contains a
folder named for your pop3 server. What's in there is your mail.

Just copy the whole folder somewhere, and when you get Mozilla working
again (or switch to Firefox and Thunderbird, if you like), you can
either drop the files right back in the new profile folder created
(bookmarks and mail), or import them (mail), or set the mail program to
look in the new location for mail rather than the default.

Believe me, this is why I still use Mozilla-based products; I have the
same mail and bookmarks that I had over 5 years ago, before I:

1) switched from Netscape to Mozilla

2) carried the hard drive on which the mail and other data was contained
across the ocean in a carry-on;

3) switched from Windows to Linux (dual-boot, so the Mozilla profile
folders were shared between both OSes)

4) switched from Mozilla to Phoenix

5) dumped Windows

6) switched from Phoenix to Firebird to Firefox, and from MozMail to
Thunderbird.

The Mozilla applications are *extremely* interoperable, and your
personal files are very easy to manage. I back mine up all the time
(since it's just the one folder with mail and some loose files in my
profile).

So really, you don't have to solve this first to retrieve that data.

that is very weird, I got this version installed,

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ emerge -p libXaw

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] x11-libs/libXaw-1.0.1

even re-emerged it after I saw this:

If building of openmotif fails, "emerge -av --oneshot printproto
xbitmaps libXp" and restart emerge

on

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg

so I wonder whether its something to do with a similar problem. At
first, openmotif actually had to be rebuild and failed, so I did this
step and got rid of this error. The missing lib was libXp.so.6 I think.

What now?

GCC does make architecture exclusive code, specially with optimed for
size code. For example, code that is compiled with -march=pentium4
won't run in PIII and will give you error messages, like SIGILL or
more verbose error like Invalid Instruction or something like that.

Perhaps recompile firefox *without* the "debug" USE flag? Do you
actually need debug symbols compiled into the application? They often
cause errors for "normal" users, which is why the flag is generally not
enabled.

Yes, as far as I know, it is (though I myself do have GNOME installed).

Firefox depends on gtk:
(from www.gentoo-portage.com ; the compile-it-yourself version used for
clarity, since even the bin has to be originally compiled by someone):

Firefox is a GTK application, so it uses the GTK toolkit (as opposed to
the QT toolkit, which KDE uses).

GNOME is a GTK-based DE (as opposed to KDE which is QT-based).

So the reason why the open/save dialogs are the same is because they use
the same resources (GTK settings, many of which can be set in GNOME).

I can't say if the "extra features" that I have because I have GNOME
installed are present in your open/save dialog (bookmarked folders, for
example).

>
> Is there going to be a way of NOT making it the standard open/save
> dialog when firefox 1.5 gets unmasked?

Masking or unmasking is not going to change the source code, which
depends on GTK. Only upstream can recode the program with a different
toolkit. And that seems unlikely to happen, since it hasn't happened yet
(and if the toolset was going to change, it probably would have before
1.0, not suddenly now when the release is finally stable enough to be
picking up steam fast in the popularity stakes).

but neither executing ldconfig or just revdep-rebuild helps (in case of
revdep-rebuild, it fails) to solve the problem.

The rest it has to rebuild is:

[ebuild R ] media-libs/nas-1.7-r1
[ebuild R ] media-libs/t1lib-5.0.2
[ebuild R ] media-video/transcode-1.0.2-r1 USE="imagemagick*"
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/apmd-3.2.1_p4

This should be straight forward, but I don't really know where the lib
was before I installed modular X (or why its not found by them).

You may be missing:

x11-libs/libXaw-1.0.1

It will install /usr/lib/libXaw.so.7.0.0

What puzzles me is that it would seem that this is a older library than
libXaw.so.8, so if the modular X is the latest release, why is this lib
older?

Not sure, but install the missing package, do a revdep-rebuild and all
should be fine.

Well, I did a windoze thing and rebooted. It got worse. That was when
Mozilla stopped working at all. My rig has always been named smoker, since
the install anyway.

I have a new install on the way on another hard drive. If that one does the
same crap, I'm installing Mandrake for a while anyway. < goes and pukes at
the thought of Mandrake > :-(

Things I have done so far:

Renamed ~/.mozilla thought maybe it was a corrupt file
Tried two different users, no workey
re-emerged Mozilla then did a emerge -C mozilla and then re-emerged mozilla
again. Still no worky.

Any ideas? Anybody want to host this large strace file so others can see it?
I don't have anyway to host it here.

Thanks
Dale

Oh, Willie, it is working on it. It adds a new line from time to time. I'm
just twidling my thumbs waiting on it. LOL I'll send it when it gets tired

Yes, MMX is quite an improvement if actually used in code. I once had
to squeeze microseconds out of some windows code that I was writing,
in order to speed up RS232 communication, and it made a HUGE
difference. The code was originally taking a few ms, but I got it
down to a few hundred microseconds by using MMX. MMX can operate on
64bit integers, where standard IA32 instructions can only operate on
32bit integers.

Do you run SMARTD? If you do, did it complain?
(grep SMART /var/log/everything/*)

Usually UncorrectablError means that some spots on your harddrive is
not readable. And if it keeps complaining, it might be a sign that
something is wrong with your drive. (Of course, it could also be flaky
connectors.)

Maybe you can take a look at
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/troubleshooting/index.htm

A lot of times you get one or two bad sectors due to environmental
issues: power blip for one, and my roommate slamming the door too hard
on his way out for another. If that is the case, most harddrive
vendors provide a diagnostic tool that allows you to map that couple
sectors to one of the backup ones on the disk. (Yes, they have a few
extra on the harddrive just for that purpose).

Are you absolutely positive of that? I *thought* (would have thought)
compilers these days would compile in conditional use of such
instructions? That way if large blocks could benefit from these new
instructions, they would use them, otherwise fall back to a common set
of instructions. Of course this wouldn't be very beneficial for small
sections of code. I've been wondering about this for quite some time
though, but never bothered to investigate.

mplayer and the X server gain performance by using these extensions
(mmx, sse, sse2). One of the reasons why X is much faster in Gentoo

Exactly the same message I noticed less than 1hr before my Maxtor
DiamondMax 9 packed in just before xmas. Annoyingly my drive wouldn't
mount the main data partition but everything else seemed in tact. I
managed to recover all my data from the drive using dd once i had a new
drive.

I'd recommend backing up anything thats essencial on the drive and
preparing for it to give up the ghost.

The drive is a 160 GB PATA Samsung. It's about two or three years

When I started seeing the above messages, I ran

   fsck.ext3 -f -v -c -c /dev/hda?

on all three partitions. Note that the "-c" flag includes the bad
blocks check.

I also ran

   smartctl -t long /dev/hda

On the drive. Apparently, an error was found (details below). I'm
not sure if this drive is actually dying, though, as the following
article (by the smartmontools author) suggests that one or two
errors on a drive is nothing to worry about. Also, the SMART
overall-health self-assessment test comes back as PASSED.

   http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6983

But the constant kernel messages, along with the error in the "long"
SMART test, concern me. At this point, I'm not really sure what my
next steps should be, so I'm looking for any suggestions or advice.

Thanks!

actually, mmx (MultiMedia eXtensions) , sse and sse2 instructions are designed
primarily for multimedia and gaming type applications, which _do_ use
floating-point math, and AFAIK, encryption is going to be all-integer too
(floating-point math is not perfectly precise)

And, like I said earlier, if you put a program with an sse or sse2 instruction
on a PII, the program will most likely spontaneously abort when it tries to
execute the unsupported instruction.

I noticed similar things can happen when for some reason (DHCP, some
dialup script, ...) your hostname changes while X is running already.
Everything running continues running just fine but X thinks the new
connections were coming from a different host and refuses them.

I wonder why that should be necessary in the first place as su seems to
support this .Xauthority linking on its own. On SuSE systems
/usr/X11R6/bin/sux is just a symbolic link to /bin/su, I just tried it
here and it works. The bad thing is that "sudo sux" does not work as in
this case sux is called as root already. Perhaps I should write my own
"suxdo" wrapper? :)

[gentoo-user] missing link to libXaw.so.8 after xorg 7,0 install

2006-01-13 Thread krgn
Hi,

I have just installed modular X on my box and try to finalize it, but a
few things are broke now and have to get rebuild.

revdep-rebuild -p  :::spits this out

Checking dynamic linking consistency...
  broken /usr/bin/audemo (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/auedit (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/aupanel (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/auphone (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/autool (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/auwave (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/xapm (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/bin/xglyph (requires libXaw.so.8)
  broken /usr/lib/transcode/filter_subtitler.so (requires libXaw.so.8)
 done.

but neither executing ldconfig or just revdep-rebuild helps (in case of
revdep-rebuild, it fails) to solve the problem.

The rest it has to rebuild is:

[ebuild R ] media-libs/nas-1.7-r1
[ebuild R ] media-libs/t1lib-5.0.2
[ebuild R ] media-video/transcode-1.0.2-r1 USE="imagemagick*"
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/apmd-3.2.1_p4

This should be straight forward, but I don't really know where the lib
was before I installed modular X (or why its not found by them).

thanks

Karsten

Sigh, read the manual (you should be telling me :-().
The symbols thing was about having a

  /lib/modules/2.6.14-gentoo-r5/alsa-driver

Removing that fixed the symbols problem.

I'm still stuck on the 'function snd_ctl_open failed for
default: No such file or directory' problem after reboot
('killall udevd; udevstart' fixes it).

I have this, and it works fine for me.
I use the alsa snd_intel8x0 driver.

Do you require OSS emulation? You could just take it out, though I don't
seem to have a problem with it.

from /etc/modules.d/alsa:

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

# Set this to the correct number of cards.

as far as I know you are wrong. ldap is an authentication
mechanism. it stores usernames, passwords, and much more.
hopefully, i'll not screw up this explanation. You sit down to your
computeryou see the login prompt. You type username, it asks for
a password. you give it one. it (the getty program) then passes
those credentials to pam. pam looks in it's list of authentication
mechanisms to see in what order you'd like to try to authenticate.
say it's ldap, then nis, then shadow. so it does a query to ldap
using your username as a key to retrieve your encrypted password. it
then compares what returns (assuming you are in the ldap db) with the
encrypted form of what you typed. If it matches, pam checks to see
if that's simply a required authentication, or a sufficient
authentication. it is possible with pan to require more than one
test be passed before saying okay. if more tests are required, or
you don't pass that test, pam goes down it's list of other methods.
typically, for instance, root is only in shadow NOT in ldap. so
usually, users are allowed to fail the ldap (or nis) and be checked
against shadow. usually, though, shadow is the authentication method
of last resort. so pam is a framework into which multiple
authentication methods can snap.

Yes, pretty much. But they're often structured at different layers -
a service might call PAM for authentication which might then call
LDAP, I think.

PAM allows you to specify multiple authentication sources - such as /
etc/passwd, other flat-file, or perhaps using WinBind to talk to a
Windows Domain Controller. PAM is extremely flexible in managing
these sources - I think, for example, it could require the username
to be in one source but then authenticate the username:password
against another source, or it can allow a user to log in via any one
of multiple authentication mechanisms.

LDAP authentication allows your users to login against a centralised
database - the service they're logging into authenticates against the
LDAP server. I don't really know much about LDAP and how it's managed
but it offers centralised single-signon that PAM alone can't offer
(although PAM could certainly be a _part_ of that).

Okay, the only time I've seen it when something similar to what you
describe happens (i.e. enter mozilla on the console and have it return
to the prompt) is when there is an instance of mozilla already
running.

Try the following:

as ROOT, kill all running mozilla processes. Including all instanced
  of mozilla-bin and mozilla-launcher.

In a console which you logged in as dale, NOT via su/sudo or the
  like, try to run mozilla.

Does it work? No?

Again, kill all running mozilla processes, and send us the output of
(running as dale)
   $ strace -o mozilla.strace.output mozilla
(send us the file mozilla.strace.output that is produced by the above
command).

Most likely you hosed the permissions on your ~/.mozilla directory. First, try:

chown -R dale:users ~/.mozilla
chmod -R u+rw ~/.mozilla

If that doesn't work, I suggest posting the output of:

strace -f -e open mozilla 2>&1 | grep -Ev " = [0-9]+"

Apparently the new kernel does not include the necessary drivers or modules.
You may get a clue from /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Depending on your hardware, you
may be able to get it working temporarily with either the vesa or fbdev
drivers. In any case, you can use a stage3 chroot to build yourself a new
kernel and the appropriate drivers.

This is for both Holly and Neil. I login to my GUI as dale, not root. I just
use the konsole with root access for doing a emerge or copying files over or
something. I also use it to ssh into other boxes, restart my network etc etc
etc. As far as where my GUI is concerned, it won't let me login as root. I
am logged into my GUI as dale though. I also tried dale2 and a very new user
named test. Mozilla will not start with them either. I will try them again
after this email though, making sure there is no running mozilla this time.

I also use that konsole as root because it will allow root to kill a process
that little old dale can't. Some of those Mozilla processes that were
running were running as root, not sure why. It never did that before.

I did also open a regular console, as dale not root, and when I type in
Mozilla, it gives me this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ mozilla
No running windows found

** (mozilla-bin:20715): WARNING **: Owner of /tmp/orbit-dale2 is not the c

urrent user

Since I use dale for the most part, I trashed the orbit-dale2 file and it
still won't start. It just comes back to a prompt and that is it.

Any more ideas? Sorry on the confusion. I confuse myself sometimes too. LOL

Hi David-

I've never used bluetooth before, much less done an emerge of
gnome-bluetooth, but a quick and simple search on
http://bugs.gentoo.org for the string:

gnome-bluetooth

yielded the following link:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113460

Which describes your issue, and contains workarounds in the form of an
ebuild patch, or a manual edit method for fixing the issue.

I don't know why no-one responded to your mail previously, but one
thing you may want to check out in the future prior to sending an
e-mail to the list is http://bugs.gentoo.org - you might get quicker
results in some situations! :)

HTH-

James

Every Linux distribution I can think of uses the same GNU coreutils,
fileutils, etc. Hit www.gnu.org. That said, some distributions may
apply a few patches, but this is still minor. They're all GNU.

[gentoo-user] mozilla firefox 1.5 and gnome

2006-01-13 Thread Trenton Adams
Hi everyone,

I'm just curious about something. I installed mozilla-firefox-bin,
and I got what I *thought* was the gnome open/save dialog. And I
absolutely I can't stand that thing. So, I decided to compile
mozilla-firefox for myself, as I have "-gnome" in my use flags. Well
for some reason, I still have that open/save dialog.

So, is that a gnome open/save dialog, or is it something else?

Is there going to be a way of NOT making it the standard open/save
dialog when firefox 1.5 gets unmasked?

Thanks in advance.

Though it makes me wander, when I created the new user using the KDE
