Re: [Goanet] Selma's Book INTO THE DIASPORA WILDERNESS launched in Goa today
Arre Pandu, Lampiao to Lampiao sodanch urtolo, kednach sudhorcho na. When you say, Kanak shempddi gaili do you have to be a shempddekar? In areas of North Goa, Shempddekar has caste connotiations. If so then the big irmao Admin Noronha is going to put you under moderation for promoting casteist trends in a secular network. Do be kind enough to mail me off list about the exact implications of the term. By the way, the discussion has veered of track from the original subject line. To bring things into proper perspective, I have been reading Selma's book which impressed me no end. Selma gets credit for the painstaking research that she has done to bring out the book. It has an easy to read style and it will be worth preserving as a monument to Goans of past days. Fred irmao in his turn as the motivating factor has done very well and Broadway in its turn has presented an elegant book. At this point I would also like to share a story of one of my aunts. This aunt was well known in Mombasa/ Nairobi circles as she was the only lady to play rummy daily in the Mombasa G I with a group of men and hold her own. She was a kind of institution in Mombasa. She was stranded in Goa during the last war and her husband was in Mombasa. As she had a strong desire to join hubby, and there was no ship available from Bombay to Mombasa because of the German U boats and E boats, she decided to board an Arab Dhow with a group of five or six women. She travelled by this dhow from Bombay to Mombasa, a long and testing journey. To say the least, the conditions were primitive. Toilets were non existent. What the dhow had was just a box slung over the side with a gaping hole in the lower plank. So these intrepid ladies devised a plan, they would collectively surround the area of the deck where the toilet box was after darkness had set in and do the needful one by one in turn. One can imagine the conditions. The tossing of the dhow, the food consisting of sweet potatoes, rationed brackish water, etc. But these ladies made it. The other ladies on board were mostly Gujeratis. Many such stories about Goans abound. Selma has pioneered a book outlining the achievements, trials, and tribulations of Goans. Great work Selma. In the letter, the Justice writes: The Central Government and the International Organizations have taken careful note of the fact that the State Govt. spends an average of Rs.50 Crores a day on self publicity in order to ensure that grave incidents of the present type are not reported. Just curious to know exactly who the International Organizations are, and are they monitoring any other aspect of happenings (other than attacks on Christians) in India. Secondly, Rs 50 crores a day is really a huge amount, comes to Rs 18,250 crores a year. I do not know if the total advertisements in all the newspapers in Karnataka would amount to this sum. I, therefore, wonder about the credibility of Justice Saldanha's claim as far as this is concerned. Really like to be enlightened. Best regards, U. G. [Goanet] Selma's Book INTO THE DIASPORA WILDERNESS launched in Goa today
Selma's Book INTO THE DIASPORA WILDERNESS launched in Goa today Professor Augusto, One could actually see your anger or hatred in your write up.. Pl tell me what made you write that big lecture or rather a ladainh? Is that because I came there and covered Selma’s Book Launch Ceremony? Where you (as a speaker or a member of the dais) are also figured in the Pics and the video clip – Is that what you didn’t like? Just because someone pulling your legs at the venue etc You decided to take it on me here? As a professor, is that the best you could give to goanetters? To edit your part of video footage/speech, in order to give your best part of it/you by showing less nervousness/gapping etc alone cost me about 2 hours – And you call all my efforts as ‘torture’? Let me tell you professor in Concanim TUJEM KHORPOTA EK KODDEM ANI TUM KHORPITA DUSRE KODDEN (Itching at one place and you are scratching at another) You always thoguht JoeGoaUk is a scam You even thought he/she is one of your friends circle and you even accused many.. And I think your problem is all about this.. What more can I say about you here? I know you hate me (so you said several times) but deep down I was also of the impression that you love me as much as you hate me because you never stopped reading my posts (you could disregard or delete it if you wanted to but you didn’t) You may hate me for whatever reasons, that’s your problem but don’t make others to hate me by spitting poison etc I may have shown migrants pics causing nuisance in the city but that does not mean I criticize them or the law or the constitution of the land. Infact, I was the first one to say here that Goa can’t mange without them and that’s about 4/5 years ago. I showed our very own Goans Ghantis too e.g. these are all Goans - What you say about them? http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk_dirtypanjim/2194017580/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk_dirtypanjim/2187716793/ By doing so, I was only trying to bring to the notice of the local authorities including the MLA and also copied them as well as local press And off course, it is needless to mention here that I was also trying to keep updated my fellowmen throughout the world through this free electronic medium called Internet. Am I wrong to do so? Let me tell you one more thing My details are on file. My name is Joe (Not Khan) Now, what you are going to do? Get my personal info under RTI? Don’t even think about that, sorry, it’s not Govt. funded Is it is a crime in doing what I do? Is it a crime if I don’t join you in the pub or over a cup of tea? Is it a crime if I refuse awards? Is it a crime if I refuse publicity? Is it a crime to spend on something and expect no returns? What is it then? My net extended name i.e. JoeGoaUk? Is it too much irritating? Can’t you see the real thing in the name despite being here for last 8 years? What is it then? Jealousy? Talking about the rules on and on, it sounds as if someone is - Trying to teach others how to do their job. - a paid member or a founder member ‘I you are a diabetic, you should not be eating jelobies’ And that’s as simple as that – the commonsense I mean. Sorry, i had to say something and could not keep quite. If you do decide to come back on this (I don’t expect a reply though) Please change the subject line or atleast take off the person’s name In the mean time, here is something for you, your favourite Tiger’s ‘Tike Piprimuttam’ to cool your temper. Maim, what is this? http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauktiatr5/4759768805/ That’s the tiatr by Anil Kumar (Anifa Production) It was staged at Kala Academy on 1st Sept.2010 So. What the story is all about? I asked a few at the auditorium including ours and their reply was ‘Tiatr sarko Temchoch’ Although we had ticket for this tiatr, I alone could not be there on time and as such, I could only watch about the an hour of the last part. Here is what I saw (and not what I heard) The story does appear revolving round the recent ‘Ratol Sucide’ incident. There is Vicky (not Minister), there is Sofia (the ratol suicide victim), there is Tanya (Sophia’s mother/widow), There is Curtorim Police Station, there is CID Crime branch with Lady PI (Cynet) asking Vicky where he was at the time of the death/sucide?, there were NGO (Women), Tanya’s servant, son, son-in-law etc Talk about Ratol, tootpaste, tooth brush, 90 lacks spent by Vicky on Sophia’s Treatment. Extra Marital affair, promises made, foreign trips, vicky Married but has children from another woman, Possible love angle between Vicky-Sophia’s mother Tanya Vicky educational qualification, Vicky’s aide/Advisor etc etc One Mr. Sanjay Kalangutkar did the typical role of a Marathi speaking Havaldar throughout. Crowd was around 600 including many tiatrists such as Mil-Mel-Nel, Sheik Amir, Mr. Mrs Tomazin etc etc. Seen some priests too. Mr. Barad, Do not try to divert the topic now into a wider discussion. My comments were personality specific and it is in that context I had recommended you read the persons remarks to understand his communal and casteist slant. [Goanet] Respect privacy of JoegoaUK
With all my humility I salute JoeGoaUk for the wonderful service he does for Goa and Goan cause. His Pictures, videos and writings are thought provoking. He touches issues which Goan Media fail to highlight. He is always gracious in his writings and responses. Most humbling to my mind, though anonymous, never mis-used his un-known identity. Why his identity perplexes people? He may work as individual or as a group, it his decision. Lets us respect his privacy. I have a request to JoeGoaUk post pics or video to show us the current state of Hygiene at GMC Bambolim. GMC was the filthiest place I had ever seen (July 2002) in my entire life. General Ward number 13 to be more precise, which was on First Floor toward the end of the building (left-side). There was this long area with taps to wash which was inside the ward breeding filth. Below, on ground Floor there used to be cattle herd taking shelter from rain during the night.I was in this hospital in 2002 because my sister was admitted who eventually passed away as the right diagnosis could not be done. The reason, CT Scan machine was not functional, it is the different story that her Husband In-Laws did not take my advice to shift her to Bombay Hospital in Bombay. At that time, I had asked one of the senior doctor about the pathetic hygiene condition and non functional medical equipment but the reply was ' we (Dr) do not run the hospital but the government' Warm regards, Agnelo Pinheiro From: Camillo Fernandes camillofernan...@hotmail.com To: goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: [Goanet] Respect privacy of JoegoaUK Message-ID: snt108-w62fa7820b0e7149e796ce1c4...@phx.gbl Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Pandu in his below mail has hit the nail on the head as regards the fuss about finding the true identity of JoegoaUK. All his messages, photographs and video clips are outstanding, thought provoking and most interesting. I keep wondering how he has the time and energy to do what he is doing. [Goanet] Mutt, Munj, Munne, Kanknnam etc
Mutt, Munj, Munne, Kanknnam etc KANKNNAM Generally, Kanknnam (Bangles) are women things but we men many of us wore it too as some stage or the other. Dou you remember wearing them? No, you will not but your elder brother/sister or your parents or neigbours would be able to tell you. As for me, I am 100% sure, I wore bangles. How do I know this? Well, we had a family group picture on the wall and I saw myself wearing it. MUTT: Again, this is a kids stuff, infants below 1 year I suppose. You try giving it to a 4-5 month old and they will grasp it in their fist So tight as if they don’t want to part with it to anyone. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextra2/4951502665/ MUNJ: Well this may start one year and above. It comes very handy to tie some medicinal, religious stuff including the one to keep away from evil spirit/Eye e.g. Dontam pottolli, Taz, Hoddki etc In grown ups/adults, the said munj was used to tie or secure their Kaxtti or langutti. We now have underwear in place of Kaxtti..So, no need of Munj. Fisher folks even had it of Silver or steel metal. MUNNE: I was about 7 years old, and I still had this pendant around my neck. Mine was thicker than what you see in the pic and it was all of yellow colour only. People called it ‘Nodrechi Munne’ (evil eye). Some kids even wore it around their waist. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextra2/4951501933/ BENTIN: As a kid, I remember eating (Chewing) it, not just one end but both ends. Often while playing or even fighting our bentin used to break. Then we had to wait till the next feast day or the usual Bentina/Almanac seller comes to the village. During monsoon, my mother used to tie a dry strip of Palm (Rama Chutti) which we got on Palm Sunday/Rama Aitar and this has got something to do with Goddgodd or thunder. http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukextra2/4952094014/ joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] My $100 Challenge - Tech Explanation In Simple English
--- On Thu, 9/2/10, Jim Fernandes amigo...@att.net wrote: Finally, when you put together all the four tokens that made up the IP address, all the email header did, is gave you the public IP. As it's name implies, this IP is open for anyone to see and you can't do CRAP with it. This is akin to someone saying, Hey look, I found your zipcode !!! The above claim is misleading, as is the rest of this post. The IP address of any computer connected to the internet is by definition a public IP address. The so-called private IP addresses are reserved only for private intranets. It is the public IP address that reveals your geographical location or at least the geographical location of your local internet service provider. The private IP address is useless. It does not reveal your location or that of your ISP at all. It is simply an assignment of a local address for your computer in your own local intranet, such as your office or home network. In other words, it is the public IP address that uniquely identifies your computer on the internet at any given time. No two computers anywhere in the world would have the same public IP address at the same time. If your public IP address is static, it will be the same each time you connect to the internet. If it is a dynamic IP address then it will change each time you connect to the internet. So a public IP address at any given time is not like a zip code at all. So once again, there is no doubt that Mervyn won the $100 challenge. Cheers, Santosh --- On Thu, 9/2/10, Jim Fernandes amigo...@att.net wrote: To those who care to know: Here is a quick explanation in plain English on what I did. There was nothing magical or nothing high-tech (though I could have used a more complicated method) to hide my real IP. Devices known as routers, are used to route INTERNET traffic using a protocol known as IPv4. This is made up of four numbers separated by dots, such as n.n.n.n . This combination of numbers is also known as IP, where 'n' is a number going from 0 to 255. Each of the positions in the 'n' is also known as a 'token'. So in an IP, there are four tokens. Due to heavy consumption of IP addresses, the protocol is now being upgraded to IPv6. What our friend Mervyn Jack-Of-All-Trades-Master-Of-None Lobo (AKA JOATMON), has published on GoaNet, is what is known as 'public' IP. Everyone who connects to the INTERNET, gets one. Whether you can trace that IP from the email header to an actual person, depends on how the INTERNET connection was actually made and how the email was sent. There are at least two methods that I know of, where one can hide his/her identity when sending emails: 1. By accessing webmail - that is, to directly connect to the email provider's website and using it without a program such as Outlook. This is the simplest method to use. 2. By using proxy servers - you need to make special technical arrangements to use this method. I used the first method because I wanted to lure the sucker into a trap. Had I used the second method, JOATMON would have been completely lost and would have made it easy for him to logically walk away from my trap. So lets drill down a bit more, to see what he actually found. He published my IP as : 74.101.150.10 Internet Service Provider: Verizon Internet Services Location: Latitude : 41.03 Longitude : -73.7733 Zipcode : 10601 / WP / NY / US If you go click onto the link at http://www.whatismyip.com/tools/ip-address-lookup.asp and punch in the above IP 74.101.150.10 and click on Lookup - you would see all of the above information. Now, instead of '10' in the last token of the IP, if you put numbers going from '0' to '255' in the IP lookup, you would still get the same / similar information. So, the question becomes, how good is this information? To get a better understanding, let me drill this public IP a bit further. The first two tokens in the public IP ( 74.101 ), identifies the owner of the network - In this case, a company named Verizon. This is a huge company with millions of customers, so obviously their network is large. To better manage the traffic, these networks are logically sub-divided into smaller sub-networks or subnets. The third token in the public IP ( 150 ), identifies one such subnet. The coordinates for Latitudes and Longitudes that you see above, is the general location of the subnet - if not, it is the address where the company has listed the subnet's location in the corporate directory structure. This address, has nothing to do with customer's actual location. In fact, my real zipcode is 10606 (not 10601 as shown above). One can easily verify this from the US postal service. Finally, when you put together all the four tokens that made up the IP address, all the email header did, is gave you the public IP. As it's name implies, this IP is open

Re: [Goanet] Mother’s hugs brings dead son back to life
In the medical literature there are many cases of apparently stillborn infants that have seemingly come back to life after variable periods of time. There are also innumerable cases of premature declaration of death by physicians because of subjectively imperceptible respiration and heart beat in conditions such as suspended animation. That is why every medical student is taught that the only surest sign of death is putrefaction. There are no miracles here. Meanwhile, the Mirror has also reported several sightings of space aliens, UFOs and alien abductions. Cheers, Santosh --- On Thu, 9/2/10, Marshall Mendonza mmendonz...@gmail.com wrote: For those who doubt the existence of God or happening of miracles, here is some food for thought.:- Mother’s hugs brings dead son back to life For two hours after he was declared dead, Australian mother Kate Ogg hugged, touched and spoke to her stillborn baby, who miraculously opened his eyes and grabbed his mom’s finger. For two hours, a grieving mum cradled the apparently lifeless body of her newborn son – and all her caresses and whispered words were rewarded when the baby suddenly began to move. Top: Kate and David break down after being told their son (circled) did not survive; a smiling Kate holds her son Jamie after he starts breathing and doctors say he’ll live Born prematurely at 27 weeks and weighing just one kilo, doctors said Jamie Ogg had no chance of survival. Unlike his twin sister Emily, he was not breathing and after 20 minutes of trying to resuscitate him, Jamie was declared dead. His limp little body was handed to his mum Kate and dad David so they could grieve and say their goodbyes to him in private. But after two hours of being spoken to, touched and cuddled, he began showing signs of life. And after being given breast milk on Kate’s finger, he began breathing regularly. The delighted mum said on Thursday: “He’s a little fighter, as is his sister, and they are both doing amazingly well.” She added: “I took my gown off and arranged Jamie on my chest and just held him. He wasn’t moving at all and we just started talking to him. We told him what his name was and that he had a sister. We told him things we wanted to do with him. Then, I felt him move as if he were startled. He started gasping more regularly.” Kate said, “I thought, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on?’ A short time later he opened his eyes. It was a miracle. Then he held out his hand and grabbed my finger.” Kate said they got a message to their doctor, insisting Jamie was showing signs of life, but he sent back a midwife who told them these movements were natural reflexes and that there was no way Jamie could still be alive. But Kate and David, who live in Sydney, refused to give up on their baby boy. She recalled: “I said to my husband, ‘What if he lives? We could be the luckiest parents in the world’. Kate added, “I gave Jamie some breast milk on my finger, he took it and started regular breathing. At that point the doctor came back, got a stethoscope, listened to Jamie’s chest and just kept shaking his head. [Goanet] Suggestion to check the stray dog situation in Goa !!!
Compulsory Licensing could check Goa's stray dog situation in Goa An compulsory annual dog license fee of as little as Rs.1000 per year could help reduce the number of strays and help tackle irresponsible dog breeding. Owners would face a cost of Rs.2.75 per day per dog – 25 paise more than the price of ‘Paav, Poi or Unde’ in order to provide huge improvements to dog welfare and dog control services. This licensing scheme could deliver resources to improve dog welfare as well. The government should establish a dog health and welfare strategy underpinned and funded by a special dog license scheme and a special budget outlay for the Animal Husbandry dept. This would fund resources to tackle the issues, such as strays, injuries caused by dog bites, and the prevention of disease. Senior citizens/pensioners should be charged half the licensing fee. Microchips should be provided by govt. to be used to identify the dogs, with details entered on a state database, improving dog ownership and reducing numbers of unwanted dogs. A one time cost for the same should be levied from the dog owners. The dog license scheme would achieve two important goals. It would: raise money for dog welfare, increase the numbers of responsible dog owners by getting people to think before they get a dog. ( There can be ignorance and thoughtlessness on my part, about the existing schemes of Govt. of Goa. People who own pets can put forth their elaborate suggestions as well so that a consensus can be reached to solve the stray dog menace in Goa. If all pet owners reach a consensus, the govt. can be persuaded to implement a permanent program.) --- Dr.Anjali Mohan Rao, Chairperson, Indology Goa GIRIVAR, Opp.Dhempe College, Miramar Beach, Post-Caranzalem, City-Panaji, Goa 403002 INDIA Phone/Fax: 0091-832-2462195 Cellphone: 0091-9765974786 website: http://www.indologygoa.in http://www.facebook.com/dr.anjali.m.rao ...the man who really counts in the world is the doer, not the mere critic, who actually does the work, even if roughly and imperfectly, not the man who only talks or writes about how it ought to be done... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans... the continuing Saga of Goans 48 years on
Dear Mr Rodrigues, I am at the fag-end of the if Goa to be Ruled by Goans debate that is now taking place on the Internet, but being a complete green horn to the Politics of our Goan Diaspora, I simply fail to understand for the life of me, why we have to have that constant Crab like Mentality of taking a Snipe at Each other, especially when we have had some very constructive and excellent suggestions made by Tony Louis and Carmen Miranda, so please, try your best not to pull them down with your sniping just like the the tarred Crabs of Goa that now abound in Goa due to the Great Tar balls on it's beaches, from who nows where ? What puzzles me as a Goan even more is why, we Goans who consider ourselves more intellect than the present motley Crowd of Members of the Goa State Assembly who, due to the history of our fate are so unrepresentative of Goa are able to hood wink their way to the Migrant Vote Bank and Commercial Bank with so little intellect academic qualifications, and with, so much as a little tiff between themselves, unlike some of us who simply revel in Sniping ? Dear Mr Rodrigues and fellow Goenkars who are following this debate in Earnest, please try to Refrain from SNIPING at EACH other as this only Exasperates the likelihood of US ever being able to want to Guide OR rule OURSELVES. Why cannot we take a Cue from this Year's Wold Goa Day in UK, where the Theme was Ami Soglim Aik Ixttaghots OR United we Stand Divided in Our Thoughts or DEEDS We FALL , like the ruins of CABO de RAMA !!. Therefore, my personal plea is, Be REAL and be MAN and WOMAN enough to realise that having a GO at each other like Spoilt Brats only makes the Day of our YEARNING or DAWNING to be our own Masters that much difficult and it might take another 48 years OR Longer. Do we really want to wait that LONG, because by then, most of us here on the Internet will all be well-fried, not fired up and 6 feet under, so who will be the flag bearer of our Gold Orange Azure flag for Amchem Goem if we continue in this vane ? By actin as we do, GIVES the 40MLA's a breather that we cannot even agree on simple things like constructive Suggestions in the usual Goan Crab like mentality way, with due respect to the poor crustacean which is a Creation of God to be a Crab with it's own mission in life, to serve us on a platter !!Do we need to be like Crabs therefore to Serve our New Masters 48years forever on end ? Finally, please Be Real Ladies and Gentlemen if that's what you really want to achieve in the very long march yet again, after Annexation of not being the MASTERS of OUR own GOAN DESTINY, Are we forever to be led led hand foot by the so-called High Command in Delhi? If you count to TEN, you can visualise what our Liberators and the Freedom Fighters had it in for US and I don't make any bone about it, to be in chains in the guise of Liberation. Today, we Goans represented by the 40 or So MLA's are still Jumping and Dancing like puppets to their TUNE, not our Own Goenkarponn Kan-tar, because the strings are still being pulled by our Liberators and the long gone Freedom Fighters, who are but, only resting(in their grave) on their Laurels. So we should ask ourselves this very telling question, was Annexation of GOA worth it's weight in Thought, Soul, Deed OR am-chem Goan Soil ? How SAD really, but perhaps we have made our Bed with the Liberators and we should lie in (with them) it for Better or for Worse not for Richer or Poorer as we are ouch more the Poorer for having been Liberated by our new Masters at the Centre ? This is my way of looking at things as they stand in Goa and I am Cock Sure, some of you will disagree with me and have your own thought on this,.but please before you do, No Sniping Please,We are Goans and not Crabs !! It is time India, emulating US action in the BP case, vigorously enforces the ‘‘polluter pays’’ principle so that such ships are rendered automatically liable to pay for environmental damage without going into the question of fault. The contamination of coastal waters by oil spills is bound to worsen unless errant ships are slapped with exemplary damages to the tune of crores of rupees, commensurate with environmental repercussions and costs of remedial action. The Mumbai spill was due to a collision. Goa’s case is a shocking ‘‘spill and scoot’’ by a rogue ship. Government should also leverage its prerogative to impose legal sanctions, including cancellation of licences. As a token of our commitment to tackling this serious problem, TOI offers a reward of Rs 10 lakh to the crew member who blows the whistle on his polluting ship. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Tanisi Kirtani also bagged the double crown, lifting the mini-cadets and cadet girls crowns. Kirtani and Wesley were the only two to bag double crowns. It is admirable that both have shown excellent consistency. VTTA’s Alisha Alfonso (PCCE, Verna) bagged her second successive women’s title. She won a thrilling final which went the full distance and was by far the match of the day. Alisha lost the first set as her opponent Nyssa played a tactical game using deep ‘phantom’ pushes into Alisha’s extreme forehand corner, moving and unsettling her. Having lost the first game in a jiffy, Alisha switched tactics, serving long into the backhand corner and then attacking the centre with slow looping topspin drives, which unsettled her opponent and continued the pressure in the fifth game to confirm her standing as the top woman’s player in the State. Campal proved unlucky for Panjim’s seeded Roshni Gopani, who went down rather tamely to Kefira Rodrigues and Devika Sood respectively in the sub-junior and junior girls’ events. Tejas Shevde lost the junior finals to Arjun Sood 3-0, but came back strongly to subdue Krishal P. D’Silva. Diljeet Velingkar once again proved too hot to handle for Agnelo Naik who went down 4-1, in the men’s singles final. Results of finals: Mini-cadet girls – Tanisi Kirtani bt. Hear Hear!, Carmen Bai, Let’s take the presentation for a Presidential Rule if this is the best thing to do and clear the mess. Let us stop the blame game on others and take action now. Builders have a living to make and we can overlook that of the past as they thought they had right to earn due to their profession. Let’s not demean them and change them for the betterment of Goa as many of them may be genuine about Goa. Ideas generating through the spate of these e-mails and those that are available (all subject to vertical thinking) is the best thing to do to clear the mess. Where do we go to do that - Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh. In the recent words of our Minguel Braganza’s “LET’S DO IT”! – Maka dista amcho amo atah pikla! I am happy to travel at my cost with a properly selected delegation as a small contribution from overseas Goan brought up in Goa like other Goans who know where our heart is – V Formation rule to be applied. if this is better than a new party. I do not know but I am happy to hear. Power to Women is important and they need to be treated equally something that is far and between with us India. I have known many of our women who are intelligent. We need to listen if we have ears and act if we have the strong convictions; sitting on ice should be the day of the past. Hope this e-mail will get those people to give their views; failing which copies of next e-mails may go astray in transit. If each Goan in Goa and all corners of the world make one commitment to do something tangible or just contribute to the new committee which could be in “status nascendi” if strategically arranged, we could do wonders. Funds if collected to be operated as trust funds controlled by well known lawyers in the community and documented on how, where and why expenditure is required. [Goanet] CUNCOLIM CELEBRATES INDEPENDANCE 2010
63rd INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION - CUNCOLIM –GOA. There was uncertainty in the air. The heavy rains had damaged both the Konkani rail tracks and the highway, we were wondering how we would make it to Goa. At the same time we did not want to disappoint the students of Cuncolim with whom we usually celebrate Independence day. So when we met to finalize the Scholarships and financial aid we decided, come what may we would make it to Goa. Whilst most people were enjoying a weekend siesta, Roney-Hon-Secretary, Benes–Vice President and Nassim–President along with Sub-committee - Sylvia and Mabel departed with a prayer in their mouths to celebrate the 63rd Independence day with the children/students of Cuncolim.”Thank God”, we arrived safely Pre Independence, we met the principal/headmasters of all the five schools/college. This inter action was very fruitful as it helped us understand the infrastructure and needs of the students and schools. On Independence Day, Sylvia, Mabel, Roney, Benes and Nassim along with the Goa committee Filonio Vaz, Jefferies Mascarenhas, Ivan Moraes, Manny Fernandes and Dinesh Naik visited Our Lady of Health H School, Cuncolim United H School, Maria Bambina Convent H School, Infant Jesus H. School, and H.R. Kenkre H School. At the schools we had the pleasure of interacting once again with the principals, teachers’ students and witnessed skits, patriotic songs and prayers organized by the students of the primary and secondary section of the schools; we were impressed with so much talent on display. At each school, members in their speech, encouraged students to recognize their talents, work hard to achieve their goals, requested students to appreciate the good work carried out by the teaching staff and make best use of the opportunities given by the schools. The heads of school in turn thanked the Cuncolim welfare Trust for their time; effort and contribution that helped students overcome their academic expenses. 67 Freeships, 24 Sponsorships and 25 Scholarships were distributed to deserving students, amounting to Rest 88,200/- Our Experience at H.R Kendra H. School-Veroda-Cuncolim At the H R Kenkre H. School, Mabel and I witnessed Innocence, Simplicity and Sincerity written on the faces of the children present at the Independence Day. They have the inclination but do not have the resources, the school is willing to give their time but the boys and girls have domestic commitments. What they need is a touch of extra love and careful guidance. They are oppressed by society and need extra help and help we gave them. They were grateful and thanked us profusely for the financial aid. We believe that this school should be treated differently from the other schools in Cuncolim as they have children from very low strata attending the school and many may not complete high school due to lack of funds. We believe that children have the right to live, to play, to be protected and express their views. We act as an NGO to identify, address and try to eliminate the root causes of issues but, due to the paucity of funds, Cuncolim welfare trust has not been able to reach out to all the students. (Non-Cuncolkars) . The school has appealed for new desk and benches for their student as the old one are completely broken(not repairable). If any of you would like to donate a desk and a bench pl get in touch with Nassim DeSouza - 9920939453- nassim.deso...@emirates.com A drawing competition was held in the respective schools for all the children. Cash prizes were awarded to first three winners of each category. The Independence celebration ended on a very productive, informative and satisfying note. We can say one thing “All went well” We owe a Big Thank You to Roney Almeida- Hon Secretary for the planning and looking into every minute detail to ensure the celebration was a success. Many thanks to Benes Coutinho- Vice President for scrutinizing all the Scholarships, financial aid applicants and pay-outs. We also want to thank Ms Doreen Gama-Hon. Asst Treasurer for helping us write and check all the cheques and envelops. Thanking you Francis Jacques for organizing the cheque books A word of thanks to our Sub-Committee members Sylvia Coutinho and Mabel Desouza for volunteering to come to Goa and be with the students of Cuncolim Above all we want to thank Mr Cedric Moraes- Trustee for his encouragement, help and moral support The Cuncolim Welfare Trust is Proud of the following Cuncolkars for their Financial support : “The more you give the more you get” Mr Joe Coutinho – Mileavado – Bandra Mumbai - Rs6000/- Mr Derrick D’Souza – Dandora – Andheri(W) - Rs6000/- Mr Elvis D’Souza – Dandora -Cuncolim - Rs6000/- Mr Edson D’Souza - Dandora -Cuncolim - Rs6000/- Mr Rudolph Noronha – Madicotto - Cuncolim - Rs3000/- All our precious sponsors-donors who believe in “the Joy of Giving.” Lastly thank you Mr President- Nassim DeSouza for the

Attempts to ridicule my T shirt suggestion as one practical way in which we could show popular feeling about corruption in Goa was not very constructive . May I remind you that this technique has been used around the world and was recently used in Thailand and Iran with red and green shirts respectively, which almost brought down the governments of those countries. It is an old method of visually showing where you stand when it comes to political movements, and can be very effective - a visual and strong show of popular unity behind a cause. -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
How can one expect Goa to be ruled by Goans? Goans cannot fulfill their basic civic responsibilities. Pavements are not provided they walk on the roads. Pedestrian crossings are not provided they run across and often get hit by speeding vehicles. Mourn and wail a little and are back to their routine. They ride 2-wheelers but do not take the responsibility of wearing helmets. They behave well only if a police is sited around. No water supply in their pipelines, they grumble but are happy with tanker supply. If in one lane there is a traffic block they just switch on to the next irrespective of whose way they obstruct. The four wheelers will block the two wheelers from proceeding. They will pay the bribe first and scream later. They will complain that politicians are chors but will be the first to stand in line to collect free coconut saplings and free fertilizer from the politician. They will curse the miners and builders but have no shame to prostrate before them for sponsorship. They will howl about environment destruction but have no reservations in receiving awards from unscrupulous real estate firms. They will protest against development on hill slopes, but their projects will be designed and built on hill slopes. They will curse the migrants but have no problem going repeatedly before a Chief Town Planner from U.P. pleading for relief. They blame migrant labour for malaria and chikunguniya but will hire them to work in their houses. They will purchase expensive mosquito repellents but will do nothing to eradicate breeding sites of mosquitos. They claim to be learned but read migrant gossip columns to up date their knowledge. When we cannot govern ourselves into performing our daily responsibilities as citizens, how are we going to choose our leaders to govern the State? When we are dependent on migrants to do our every work, how can we be expected to rule Goa? Dream big but start small. Good luck! -Soter * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Hi Oscar, With regard to your very sensible email below, I would suggest that the first and most important person that you should take the presentation to should be the Governor of Goa for several reasons: 1. He is a reasonable man and open to suggestions with a listening ear! 2. He will be responsible for the execution of President's Rule 3. He will act as the conduit and add weight to any presentation to Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh. 4. [Goanet] Elections to Rob and Loot
Dear Editor, If possible pls ignore the last mail and publish this as there were several grammatical mistakes on the last one. Thanks. Elections to Rob and Loot? Vote for Change! Local Candidates for the Cuncolim Municipal Council elections have commenced their campaigning, some of them had donated Projectors to view the recently concluded Football world cup matches on big screens, whereas some are involved in repairing Chapels, donating train tickets to visit Valankani etc, etc.Elections in recent times has turned to be a good profit-making business. The one and only requirement to win any election is a technique to fool local people. After the last Assembly elections, a Councilor publicly declared that he won’t be contesting in the next Municipal Elections but this is a low investment business and if turned successful it’s all money around, sacs of money. So once elected very few loves to resign from politics and take rest, unless the people make them rest. The reservations in the name of SC/ST/OBC also to play a major role in the election drama. The business is so profit-making that some government servants who are earning a decent salary may resign from the service to contest municipal elections. We must have witnessed a lot so called development in our historic village of Cuncolim but also don’t be blind not to witness the development of our own elected Councilors. They developed a lot, I mean, sacs of money. The present ones are well trained to rob and loot.First, the so called Cuncolim Municipal Council issued a License to a controversial project at Addiband, Cuncolim and now to make the people happy, a Work Stop order has been issued. Stop will definitely turn into start after the elections. Is the said project Illegal? If so, why not cancel the License? Trained, Licensed Thieves will have a better answer. Last but not the least, they are perfect thieves. They hold a Master’s degree in the profession of politics and we the people should not give them a chance to use their degree against us and our historic village. Let’s vote for a change, not because the new ones will turn better but only because they will take time to achieve the degree to Rob and Loot. Joel Morais P.O.Cuncolim, Bencleamvaddo, Salcette, Goa. [Goanet] Some sense is being spoken now with respect to Dogs
Dear Dr Rao. For the first time I see you are speaking some sense here. try whatever you can and see if you can achieve this licencesing mechanism. basically try to give all the dogs some kind of ownership and most of the problems that Goa faces with respect to Dogs will reduce.. Do not let them stray around, be hungry and then you know what end it faces.. please also seek awareness to make sure that all these animals end up as pets.. really and not for pets sake.. you know for sure pets need a lot fo care and do these who keep them have so much of time..??? Hope you and your institute will achieve something other than writing only. ( There can be ignorance and thoughtlessness on my part, about the existing schemes of Govt. of Goa. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans. - Serious food for thought.
Dear Mario bab! I am sorry but I agree to disagree with your comments with respect to your opinion. I would like to ask you a question, please? We have waited for 48 years and 8 months; can we not hang on to hear Tony Luis’ speech even if it takes 2 hours to read? Many winners give up at the finishing line. Floriano bab – Mea culpa in advance should you get a knee jerk reaction to my response and comment. I do not want to loose another cyber acquaintance who is very important to me. You said:: “I sincerely believe that a lot of people holding placards and banners would be tired with some taking off quietly and temporarily for a peg of feni somewhere” Do we always need to keep our spirits up by pouring spirit down? We Goans need to give better image to the rest of India as we have received a lot of bad publicity in bollywood films. Has anyone stood up with any film directors so far? Still sussegad even if we are portrayed like that. Another reason for someone from other states i.e. Andra Pradesh, Maharastra to get Ministers post and be our leaders. I agree with you wholeheartedly that our dream has been “wet dream” and I would like to add a word to that “Wet poisonous dream” Having said that, I strongly believe that Goasuraj should be given a chance (I reiterate again that I have already spread the word with my childhood friends and others through personal contact) and perhaps a few more new Goan parties should give birth to keep the pressure on. We should also have more people standing as Independent Candidates and both work from cradle to grave to show we are very serious this time failing which we will loose whatever is left. I seize this opportunity to thank Carmen Miranda, Matanhy Saldanha, Eduardo Faleira, Minguel Braganza, Dr. Oscar Rebello Bevindo Colaco, Arwin Mesquita, Benedict Lobo, Rene Barretto, Basilio Magno and many countless Goans in Goa and overseas who have done their part in various ways with whatever they can. It is now the turn of the rest of us to play our part/s. Inform our family and friends in Goa to vote for Goa party such as stated above. Synergy and the lesson of the geese in a V formation is very important for us Goans at this critical time in every way and for. It is also time for 365 days unity not just one day. We need to change direction together like the geese. Thank you Mario and Floriano for your thoughts which if not expressed would deprive me and others from giving their thoughts albeit some on the people on this forum have been sitting on the fence, reading, laughing for reasons best known to them yet we have giving this opportunity to be involved to have a say. Coming down from the fence or bolcao and joining in the V formation is important and it is not late. Secondly my original question was with respect to wider perspective as you had used that line to swipe wider coverage. The line used by you was ..why is it that what the Portuguese did 500 years ago is used to torture the present day christians?. In the first instance, instead of providing me with your answer you directed me to read Sunaparant archives as though everything appearing therein is gospel truth free of any biases! [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
I have just returned from another trip to Sikkim. Sikkim and Goa share many things in common. Both joined the Indian Union under unusual circumstances. Both have low population, great scenic beauty, high levels of literacy, and gentle law abiding people. Where Sikkim scores over Goa is that the Sikkimese have taken control over their destiny. Education if free for all Sikkimese upto high school. There are no slums seen anywhere. Employment levels are high - mostly in government service as there is very little private sector employment. Sikkim like Goa earns a lot from tourism. Land cannot be sold to non-Sikkimese. They can only be taken on lease.Even Marwaris who have settled down here for generations are denied this right.Every Company setting up operations here has to mandatorily employ 80% locals especially in unskilled jobs and give an undertaking that they will train and employ locals for skilled jobs over a period of time. Sikkim has the highest density of cars per population in India. Crime is low or non-existent. Corruption is rare or absent at lower levels but does exist at higher levels. Sikkim has voted an IIT-IIM Member of Parliament. It was illuminating discussing with the gentleman his plans for the youth of Sikkim. He plans to make Sikkim an IT and education hub. Manipal University has already set up base. Isn't is worth introspecting what has stopped or prevented goans from becoming masters of their own destiny? Or is the present dismal state of affairs the destiny that the goans have voted for? Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans. - Serious food for thought.
Dear Oscar and All Goans, This is the last time I will respond on this thread unless I see a good reason to write anything further. Before I go to core issue of this debate, let me unfold few facts about me as they hold relevance to this thread/debate. I had been the Congress Party active primary member for 14 years. As Congress worker, voted for Congress Party except 2007. I am a Catholic, not just by words by hard core practicing till date and intend to stay that way till the end in spite of all that afflicting the Catholic Church. Goa's biggest problems are these very C C. i.e Congress and Catholic. Congress Party has done more damage to Goan than any other party and still doing it. Congress Party and its leaders past and present worked for themselves and not for Goa. Corruption, Illegal Mining, Mega project, Drugs you name it and all these vices are prevalent in Goa. Sonia Gandhi has nerves to make noise and even call a opposition Chief Minister ‘Traders of Death’. What Drugs and Mining is doing in Goa is not the same? Why she is silent on these issues affecting Goa and Goans? Our so-called Catholic MP’s and MLA’s and Ex-MP don’t apprise her of the ground realities? Oh! she is waiting circa 2012 to come to Goa to celebrate Golden Goa! What about her election promise to Goa at Fatorda 2007? Are we still to trust Congress who has betrayed Goa more than once. Catholic, is become synonymous in Goan Politics and it ills. The so-called Catholic voters vote for the same Corrupt Catholic politician. The parable of The Prodigal Son narrated by Jesus is repeated every election. Jesus never said the same prodigal son be invited with open arms repeatedly betrayal after betrayal. This is what we Catholic in Goa had been doing with corrupt dirty politicians. The highest numbers of litigation are found in Catholic dominated Salcete Taluka. I blame squarely the Catholic for the mess in Goa as they have not lived up to the faith. Honour and dignity is the birth right of every individual just as freedom. When one loses honour and dignity there is no meaning to Freedom. I witness this at many occasions. I paid for my ticket (Dubai-Goa) and Rs 1000 as delegate fees to attend Global Goan Convention at Cidade de Goa in in Goa Jan 3-7 2007. What happened there everyone knows, who was thrown out and by whom and at whose instruction also everyone knows. But, did anyone dare raise it on that convention? Was it not the same issue which has engulfed Goa with fire now? I took a silent walk out of the hall never to return back to any CGC including Muscat driving distance by car. I had shunned all hypocritical Goan functions in Dubai for last 15 years because they fail to address Goa’s core issues. Goan Social events to my mind are meaningless if they do not connect to ground realities of Goa. Mere celebration of village feasts, dances, watching tiatrs and conducting football event are all but a sham. As recently as in June 2010, I was thrown out of Goan Forum for writing against Corrupt Goa Minister. This event I was invited and thought it was different but sadly nothing has changed in our perception. Honour and dignity for me is as important as freedom. Now, with regard to meeting Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh with delegation is debatable. Yes, it might work if the approach is Carrot and Stick. Stick to my mind will hit hard if we succeed to show our strength on the street with International Indian media coverage. For this reason I support Carmen Miranda’s suggestion of Cap T-shirts. But, the people who are cause of these ills have to be the part of the solution. My suggestion, as we Goans love to sing and dance for every occasion, let do it that way. Call for a non-political rally represented by all activists who fight lone tireless battles in small groups under one banner with the slogan ‘NO TO CORRUPTION YES TO GOOD GOVERNANCE’ on 19th Dec 2010. This event could be something like dawn to dask or vice versa with participation from singers, dancers, tiatrs etc all pledging to say NO TO CORRUPTION. Concurrently run a signature campaign at the venue and then submit it to Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh with delegation. Just meeting the representatives at High Command will not command any good as they are really sitting very high and only 1000K plus visual effects supported by equal nos of signatures might work. If this does not work then I am sure 2012 will be history for Congress. I mean no offence to any one, just few personal thoughts from a fellow Goan, a man of small means. Viva Goa by heart and soul. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
Right on the nail, Mr. Baliga. http://www.mail-archive.com/goanet@lists.goanet.org/msg66038.html be assured that outside of first-generation emigrants who reminisce of Goa, the second-generation might call themselves Goans but they have now so much integrated into the fabric of their parents' adopted lands -- be it Mumbai, Kolkata or Timbuktoo -- that they do not know what Goa really is (check Indian depiction of Goa in their travelogues and Bollywood movies); those of the second-generation born outside India, I doubt that they would like to return back to their parents' roots to settle down after their rather unsavoury visits to India as tourists.. That has been my personal experience. Other mileage may differ. [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
Carmen Miranda: For years now we have proved that we are not even capable of chosing a decent number of politicians to rule in Goa. Do you really think there is any chance at all we will get a different status for Goa? If we get Presidential rule , that will be enough to put things right. Response: Carmen, sorry if I sound like a dampener to your above suggestion. The cure being prescribed could be infinitely worse than the disease. Goa and many of the north-eastern states are treated nothing more than colonies by the powers that rule Delhi. The builders lobby and mining lobby would be more than happy. They are used to pulling strings in Delhi to get their jobs done. They have no stakes in the well being of the local population. There are no short cuts. The goans in Goa have to take responsibility to elect persons of good character and integrity. The majority of the people have to discard their laid back lifestyle and participate actively in the democratic process of holding their elected representatives accountable for their actions. The NRI/NRG's can form pressure groups and interact with the Central government to push forward certain proposals like setting up an education hub, control on mining, enacting legislation banning the sale of land to non-goans, creating employment generation schemes so that our youth do not have to leave Goa for employment, etc. While it is good to be idealistic, we also need to be practical. Curious to know about this building history If it was build during pre-liberation era, just wondering what was here before Army took it over? One can see from outside from the road that there are two beautiful sideway (semi-circular) stair cases to reach the fist floor at the entrance hall. Sadly, there are always armed military guards outside the entrance day and night walking up and down (left right front of the building) i took this pic while they look other way (just in case) Two more pic provided see link within http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk28/4951780175/ also, it has links to news paper reports about the Army decision/request to close two side roads for safety reason but CCP told them to shift their installations elsewhere or to Bambolim instead. joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans. - Serious food for thought.
Agnelo Pinheiro, After writing so well below, it would be a tragedy for you to think of not writing anymore. All views should be very welcome. And I see in Oscar's and your posts some movement ahead and in the right direction. Most of what you wrote I do believe is factual and based on sound observation . I agree that Congress and its band of prop-ups from NCP and independents with fat portfolios are and have been a disaster for Goa. Manohar Parrikar arguably was better than these thugs!!! However my only question is the inclusion of Catholics. Being a Catholic by name but not in Practice is no Catholic and therefore to include and label these thugs as Catholics is giving them an accolade they do not deserve at all. I am reminded that these thugs are like the Scribes and Pharisees that Jesus himself said ''Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees for being hypocrites who stand on the high altar and on street corners claiming to preach the faith but do not practice the truth or the faith themselves. For nowhere in the Holy Bible or in the Catholic Catechism does it teach the following: 1. To serve RATOL to a loved one 2. To smuggle gold for personal wealth and riches 3. To forcibly acquire land from poor people for a handful of rupees under false pretences for personal gain like the Food Park Scam in Quitol, Quepem and the Cutbona Jetty for a fish meal plant 4. To promote and delve in bribery and corruption as a pre-cursor to all deeds from the vote to helping someone secure a job or to getting a document signed 5. To collude with mining conglomerates to rape and pillage the land given to us by God himself to use in a way that respects the well being of others 6. To build bridges and roads for no valid reason other than to secure huge bribes from those that dare to place a tender 7. To use mob violence to attack police stations when police go about executing their legitimate duties. 8. To be involved in murders and violence against innocent youngsters or unsuspecting tourists or the use of goondas to secure their selfish disgusting ways either through drugs or violence. 9. To run rough shod over people's aspirations and land and disrespect their existence All the above are carried out by so called Catholics who happen to be Catholics because through no fault of their own they were led to the baptismal font by their parents!! Anyone who does not live his faith is not worthy of his faith and cannot be called a Catholic as it is an affront to Almighty God himself and as Jesus said they will be consumed in the fires of hell for being such hypocrites. Having said that the mess is not just caused by so called Catholics.. What about the Ranes, Pratap Singh and Vishwajeet who own large chunks of land and are part of the bribery and corruption bandwagon. And worse still the latter threatening to kill a Social Activist , Aires Rodrigues by mobile phone and then denying it? What about Babu Kavlekar the MLA of Quepem and Chairman of the GIDC responsible for the Food Park Scam in Quitol? What about Ravi Naik and the Drugs Nexus? What about Digambar Kamat who will turn black into white or deny the truth and justice just to hang on to his CM chair to make his Crore a day in corrupt ill gotten gains What about the disgraced Attorney General Subodh Kantak who was put in the dock and systemetically and skillfully exposed for corruption and personal bias and abuse of his office by Aires Rodrigues earlier this year in my presence in the Panjim Courts What about the other non - Catholic MLAs who are constantly on the bribery and corruption bandwagon? None of these are people are Catholic and neither can they be called genuine and practising Hindus or people of any faith. Otherwise next we will be saying that Hitler and Mussolini were Catholics !! and they probably were in name Unless and until these people can practise the virtues and follow by the example of OUR GOENCHO SAIB, St Francis Xavier and Pde Jose Vaz and other holy Catholics then they can be called Catholics. Having said all this it would be wonderful if Archbishop's Palace or House would join in a very active way through all the parishes to like Jesus did, to roundly condemn on a regular basis the evil deeds of these people and to warn people that people cannot serve two masters esp at election time and otherwise i.e. they need to choose between the teachings of Christ and the Greed of the Devil Every pulpit should be everyday asking people '' What doth it profit a person or an MLA if he gains the whole of Goa and suffers the loss of his own SOUL''? [Goanet] Goa's Modern Criminal Acheivements
The Mandar murder case and the shocking involvement of kids from prominent homes is still on our minds. Here below is another bitter truth again in Vasco. Before dreaming of saving Goa let us first deliver exemplary courage in saving our goan families and community. Now let us not say that politicians are solely repsonsible for the delinguents and criminals in society. Publishing history books and story books on Goans will not ensure a good society. Another sad day. -Soter HERALD REPORTER 19-yr-old admits killing Dourado VASCO, SEPT 3 A month after Naresh Dourado of Vasco was brutally murdered at Chicalim, Vasco police achieved a major breakthrough by arresting a youth from Khariwado, Vasco in connection with the murder. Snehal Dias (19) of Non-Mon in Khariwado, Vasco was arrested on charges of murdering Dourado (26) on August 2 in the flat of his (Dourado's) brother at Chicalim. The gruesome murder had shocked the State and Vasco police was under constant pressure to nab the culprit(s) at the earliest. Speaking to reporters in the presence of Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Gaonkar and Police Inspector Braz Menezes, Superintendent of Police (South) South Allen De Sa evaded a volley of questions and declined to disclose more details in the case. Since the case is at the initial stage, it will be premature to comment on it. We are investigating all aspects of the case, added De Sa. De Sa said the accused, Snehal Vincent Dias, had confessed to the crime and said he had killed Naresh in his brother's flat at Chicalim. After confirming various angles into the case, the accused was linked to the case and moreover, the accused was known to the deceased. During interrogation, Dias confessed to the crime, said the SP. The accused was recently arrested by Panjim police in connection with a motorcycle theft. On August 18, he was brought from the Panjim police station to the Vasco police station on a transfer order and was placed in judicial custody, he said. Since Dias was in judicial custody in connection with a theft case, he was taken by Vasco police for interrogation and police managed to crack the case, the SP added. When asked for the motive behind the brutal murder and if others were also involved, De Sa declined to reveal further details. Dias was also allegedly involved in motorcycle thefts at Old Goa and Vasco. Incidentally, the family had refused to bail out Dias in the theft case, assuming that he would repent and change his behaviour. When asked if the police had recovered Naresh's mobile phone and laptop, De Sa replied in the negative. It may be recalled that police had traced the missing Chevrolet Spark car (GA-06-D-4306) at Aradiband, Taleigao. Vasco police have arrested the accused under Sections 302, 449, 450, 397. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] Talking photos: Curious to know about this building history
It was the quartel during the Portuguese times, and entrance to it (as were other Portuguese instalations) was open to any Goan, contrary to what it is now. I remember having lost a cap in between the quartel and and the Instituto Vasco de Gama (as IMB was knwon then) whilst returning back from a soccer game when I was a five year old... ah! memories! There was little if any secrecy in most places in those days. I read somewhere that Erlich Pinto was actually able to go to on the tarmac at Dabolim without being challenged, when he was on a spying trip to Goa a couple of months before he actually bombed the place. There was trust in the fellow human being, something that has long been lost. - Original Message From: JoeGoaUk joego...@yahoo.co.uk To: goa...@goanet.org Sent: Sat, 4 September, 2010 11:40:58 AM Subject: [Goanet] Talking photos: Curious to know about this building history Curious to know about this building history If it was build during pre-liberation era, just wondering what was here before Army took it over? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho.
