[H] HDD, GPT, & Adapters

I have a 3TB backup drive set with GPT.
I set it up with one USB3 to SATA drive adapter cable.
When I use that same drive with a different cable, it wants me to format

Anyone know what's going on here? Is there anyway to avoid this other

I would try the manufacturers website, I guess. I know with a regular

I don't think you have to many, IIRC you can have like 256 devices?
I'd do just what your thinking. Plug the card directly into a USB port,
skip the hub.
Hubs can be cheesy, quality-wise. Tripplite makes some great powered
hubs.

I just searched with google & read forums just like our list.
Maybe, it was a "freak" incident. Since it's my first & I read what I

I move disks all the time also. MBR's - this was my first GPT & this

Regardless, it may be worth take the minute to do the unmount/removal
before someone gets another "freak" incident. I certainly have spent
more than 1 minute with the aftermath!

Well, I'm very glad for you, I'm also lucky in the fact that nothing
there was to critical and/or can be transferred again.
However, this did indeed happen. I also looked up the info as I have
described to everyone & that is a fact. The only other thing I can think
of is, I went from an internal sata port to a USB3 ext sata cable?

Regardless. If you have a GPT drive - UNMOUNT/REMOVE from DISK MGMT! If
you forget, DO NOTHING - plug it back in where it was & then
REMOVE/UNMOUNT... This may or may not apply to UEFI - I don't have UEFI
& I don't care to right now.

T - That's because I didn't unmount it first. I just pulled the drive
and then hooked it up to an external USB3 SATA cable. I should have
unmounted/removed it from Disk Mgmt snap in first. If I had, I'd be
fine. Since I hadn't... It might be toast. I'm going to hook it back up
today - to the original cable & see just how bad I screwed the pooch. My
understanding is the drive gets "keyed" to the position on the SATA
ports, basically.

OK, I found out what needs to be done & since no one else knows I
thought I'd share it with you. This way, if you make the same mistake
you'll know what to do.

I guess GPT disks need to be unmounted or removed from disk mgmt & then
there will be no issues at all. I don't know this for certain but
someday I'll have the chance to check this out.

However, if you didn't know any better, like me, the best course of
advice is to just reattach the drive where it was & go from there.

Big differences from MBR to GPT. HTH you guys.

stuff & pull the drive for safe keeping. I used GPT as it has the 3TB
support. I pulled drive then put it on a SATA to USB 3 cable to read the
drive. Win7 acted like it never saw it. I opened disk management & it
asked me if I wanted MBR or GPT... I picked GPT & now it wants to format

making me panic with results! I stopped after selecting GPT, again - I

POP can be set to leave messages on the server.

Think of IMAP like a web based service. Hotmail, for example.
You can be on any PC, anywhere and your hotmail is the same.
Any changes you make, delete, move, whatever - is how it is wherever you
are.
IMAP can be a tad slower in my experience. Depends on many factors.
I will never go back to POP.

All said and done, less then an hour. I get paid at least an hour as
soon as I open the machine up, blow it out, put it on the

give way more leeway. Luckily, this is a significant other to a long

VLK, Volume Licence Key. I didn't know either until Windows genuine

Great, I thought I recalled someone saying on our list there were

[H] Making XP legit...

2007-01-08 Thread JOEUSER
I have a guy that got a system, with what appears to be, a ripped copy of XP.

Looks like he got hit with WGA. When the system boots it informs him
it is not genuine and advises it will not be eligible for updates. In
the task bar a light purple star looking icon resides with the same
information.

Is it possible to get him legit without reinstalling? If so, how?

I cannot confirm if this OS is legit or not but a 'friend' built it for
him.

Thanks.

I don't have one of those but as far as Transcend goes - I sold plenty
of their RAM modules (lifetime guarantee) and 5 years now - still no

Should be able to use native drivers, have you tried plugging the mouse
in while system was on and booted and/or allowing the system to boot
with mouse in? Usually the standard mouse drivers work just fine.
Unless there is a mainboard or mouse issue.

[H] Shift key broke

2007-01-03 Thread JOEUSER
Really strange. Neither shift keys work on a new laptop I got. CAPS
LOCK will produce capitals but pressing and holding the shift key
does not. I don't think it's the keyboard - since both do not work.

I seem to recall sticky keys and the like but can't seem to locate
it in WinXP Pro. Has to be software, anyone able to figure this out?

 Googling was fun... http://ifaq.wap.org/computers/shiftkeyfaq.html

So when we got it in, I noticed that it only came with a PCI-X riser.
I went back and forth with Asus "support" who finally gave up and
said that they had no part # for a PCI riser card. We had to
communicate through email because I could not, for the life of me,
understand him through his Asian accent.

After much trial and error I finally found some guy on the internet
who had risers that worked with those servers.

That's my pretty crappy whitebox support story. And the whitebox
itself (no processors, drives, or RAM) was $1000+.

Re: [H] Dell Laptop Batteries

2006-08-17 Thread joeuser

It's the beginning of the end.

"Just last month, Dell warned that for its fiscal second quarter ended
Aug. 4, it expected earnings per share to be 21 cents to 23 cents, down
44 percent to 49 percent from the year-earlier period and substantially
below analysts' estimates of 32 cents per share. Dell said its fiscal
second-quarter revenue should reach $14 billion, up 4.3 percent from
second-quarter 2005 but below analysts' expectations of $14.2 billion.

Dell blamed the shortfall on "aggressive pricing in a slowing commercial
market worldwide." But analysts and some customers say there are other
things contributing to company's shortfall, namely service and technical
glitches.

Cindy Shaw, vice president of research, computer hardware and services
at Moors & Cabot, an equity research firm in San Francisco, said in a
report last month, "We are reducing estimates and our price target to
reflect increasing concern about Dell's customer experience challenges
and ability to succeed given current market trends."

Shaw, in the report, said she was responding in part to a Better
Business Bureau (BBB) report that for every PC or printer sold to a U.S.
consumer, a Dell customer is about 2.5 times as likely to complain to
the BBB as a Gateway customer and possibly 16 times as likely as an HP
customer. "

I can't find the graphic but Dells' sales are waning by the day.

Well volume helps but then again so does buying Windows and Office at a
buck a copy or whatever. Replacement parts are also where they make
money. HP is picking up Dell slack now. The computer is personal again.

LOL YEAH. Push 1 for sales Push 2 for Technical support, etc etc.

You can only sell so many computers at a $50 profit and expect to

Customer service (Lack thereof) is one of the things that is killing

Then again, I eat mostly Ritz crackers.

Dell doesn't make the battery. Dell barely makes the laptop. They are
being proactive and doing a massive recall.

But according to what I've read, a lot depends on the battery
configuration (which is probably a Dell decision) and the
position in the laptop (also a Dell decision, and given how
poorly they cool their laptops, I can understand why the
batteries blow up.)

It will be interesting to see if there are further recalls.
Does this hurt Dell or damage Sony?

Nope just grows slow as hell.

Thane Sherrington wrote:

I read an interesting quote today:

"Loyalty is dead, the experts proclaim, and the statistics seem to bear
them out. On average, US corporations now lose half their customers in
five years, half their employees in four, and half their investors in
less than one. We seem to face a future in which the only business
relationships will be opportunistic transactions between virtual
strangers."

I have noticed that customer loyalty is falling off here (but not off a
cliff), but I blame this on the fact that most businesses don't care
about their customers, and would rather make $10 right now than $5
today, and $5 next year, and so on for the next five years. Most people
have been burned so many times by so many companies that they now don't
trust anyone (although they do seem to buy into stupid advertising
tricks.) Are other people noticing a downward trend in customer loyalty?
