Hi, friends:

I have two questions-

I'm looking for a roommate or two for June 18-23 - doubling or
tripling. I'm a night person coming from the West...

Is anyone thinking of flying to Burlington and getting to Montreal
from there? What other places can I fly to in the US and ride up with others?

Thanks,

However, when I say most, I really haven't made a dent in my

[ha-Safran]: Mishpatim/Rules

2011-01-06 Thread Toby Harris
A 4th grade teacher has asked me how her students can act out the
parasha: Mishpatim, Exodus 21. It's a list of daily laws on how to
treat others, essentially. I've been searching for stories which
might illustrate the value of rules, a folktale or something, but to
no avail. Have spent lots of time with the Values Finder, You be the
Judge, and have only found one story in God's Garden, by Adam
Fisher. Any ideas? I was looking through Rabbi Harvey to see if he
told any good justice stories. I will suggest the class choose a
specific rule/law from the parasha, if not. There are certainly lots
of choices.

Thanks for any ideas y'all have!

[ha-Safran]: Weine cataloging

Hi, Colleagues:

I'm having a difficult time deciding where to put a new book, Sacred
Treasure – the Cairo Genizah, the amazing discoveries of forgotten
Jewish History in an Egyptian synagogue attic, by Rabbi Mark
Glickman. It could go in many places but using Weine classification,
I think I've narrowed it down to maybe 933 archaeology or 962 Egypt.
Was stuck in the 200s for awhile but have moved on. Any cataloging

Hi, Rachel:

Actually, I'm a synagogue librarian and though I am also interested
in what RAS libraries do, my main concern is implementation at
synagogue and school libraries. Synagogue school libraries strive
for professionalism as well and many are seeking or already have
accreditation. The copyright issues may or may not be exactly the
same. A session with both divisions in mind would be terrific! Thanks,

[ha-Safran]: Cassette tapes

2010-10-28 Thread Toby Harris
Thanks, Hasafraners! Below are the comments I received about
removing cassette tapes from our collection. If anyone wants to
contact someone about a specific comment, I'd be happy to let you
know their identity in a separate email.

As far as the decision for our library, I will not convert our
cassettes to CDs. Since we are not an archive, I can't justify this
as preservation and don't want to set a precedent for supporting
piracy. I'll just have to purchase selected top priority CDs when/if
funds become available.

I'll try to sell them at an upcoming mini-sale but I won't count on
it! I'll donate them to the Price Library of Judaica or to the FAU
Sound Archives.

Thanks again for helping me get moving on this!

The comments:

Just over the summer, my library got rid of all (except 1 set which
is a donation) VHS. We held a video sale and sold some. The rest
will be given to those who are interested in them. I am purchasing
their DVD counterpart as replacement as far as possible.

My lib. also keeps a set of 200 audio cassette tapes which is a donation.

I kept a couple of cassettes that might not be unavailable
otherwise. it is a waste of space to keep them. Mine did not
circulate. We replaced music and lectures that were on high circulation by CDs.

I think only if it's the last copy of something and not available in
another format.

How many do you have to dump?

Would you consider donating them to the Price library of Judaica?

If not, and patrons still ask for them, see if they are on CD now.

Still, if you don't want to buy a new CD, conversion to CD is usually
OK for preservation purposes -- but usually, only 2 copies: 1 for
archive as the master one for circulation.

We convert them to MP3 files for storage on CD's or external hard drives.

$5 per tape. We then return the originals as well.

Please call us if you're interested.

Absolutely. Turn them into CDs.

RE: [ha-Safran]: Volunteer Librarian

2010-09-19 Thread Toby Harris
I, too, was uncomfortable and disturbed by the notice for a
professional volunteer librarian. However, it is our job to
advocate, not to censor. Perhaps the organization should receive a
barrage of email from professional librarians educating them
instead. On the other hand, volunteering is a gift. Who are we to
decide that someone with skills, education and wealth cannot dedicate
themselves to the cause and contribute as a volunteer?

[ha-Safran]: Seattle Conference

2010-06-15 Thread Toby Harris
Convention Countdown!

The 45th Annual International AJL conference in Seattle is less than
3 weeks away!

A light jacket (not so light if you get chilled easily) and good
walking shoes are recommended! Be ready for an incredible hotel
experience, perfect blue skies (maybe) and an impressive array of sessions!

Are you flying in? Light rail from the airport started up just last
year and it's an inexpensive, easy option to get to the hotel.

Public Transit- Link Light Rail
$2.50 one way
http://www.soundtransit.org/x11204.xml
If you're willing to walk a little, there is direct link light rail
from the airport to downtown.
From the terminal, walk .3 miles NE to the SeaTac/Airport Station.
Get on the Central Link to Downtown and exit at the University
Station. Then walk .1 miles E toward the hotel. ( The SeaTac /
Airport Station is connected to the fourth floor of the Airport
Garage. Trains arrive and depart on the platform level of the
station. The covered, level walkway to the Airport Terminal is one
level down on the mezzanine. The well-lit walkway is separated from
the main area of the garage and directional signs point the way to
the Main Terminal skybridge. Wheelchair service is available.
The Link light rail service runs from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Monday
through Saturday and 6 a.m to midnight on Sundays. Trains arrive and
depart every 7 1/2 to 15 minutes, depending on the time of day.
http://www.portseattle.org/seatac/ground/rail.shtml

Don't like that option??
Gray Line Downtown Airporter shuttle stops at the Fairmont Olympic
Hotel for $15 one way. It departs every 30 minutes from Sea-Tac.

Taxis are about $40

[ha-Safran]: AJL 2010 Conference

2010-04-14 Thread Toby Harris
Jewish Librarians Are Coming to Seattle

Don't you want to be one of them??

In the land of lox and lattes, hundreds of Jewish
librarians will gather in Seattle from around the world at the 45th
annual convention of the Association of Jewish Libraries, July 4-7.
Base of operations is the elegant and historic Fairmont Olympic Hotel
in the heart of downtown Seattle.

Presenters are coming from Canada, Israel, Argentina
and this country's East and West coasts. They represent synagogues,
day schools, public libraries, universities, seminaries and archives.

AJL Northwest Chapter president Toby Harris said
participants will experience a little Yiddish, a little Ladino, a
little green, a lot of collaboration, and the latest technology.

Joseph Janes, Associate Professor and Associate Dean
of Academics at the University of Washington's Information School
will be keynote speaker. He is the founding director of the Internet
Public Library and has authored many books on librarianship,
technology and their relationship. He writes monthly about the
Internet and librarianship in the American Library Association's
magazine, American Libraries.

On Sunday, July 4, from noon to 5pm, the general
community may view exhibits from publishers, artisans and bookstores
and enjoy music, poetry and storytelling in the expansive Spanish
Ballroom foyer.

The convention sessions will include hands-on
technology, cataloging updates, roundtables, opportunities to meet
winners of the prestigious Sydney Taylor Book and Manuscript Awards
for outstanding Jewish children's literature and more. Tours and
site visits include the historic, woodsy Hebrew Academy and their
award winning library as well as a tour of Rem Koolhaas's innovative
downtown Seattle Central Public Library.

Registration and convention schedule are available
at www.jewishlibrarians.org or by contacting Toby Harris at

I use Athena software, version 9.3 for my catalog. I would really

[ha-Safran]: Chelsea House

2009-10-29 Thread Toby Harris
Hi! Has anyone read any of the children and teen biography books
from Chelsea House? I'm interested in whether any of the Jewish
authors mention their Jewish roots at all and if they're accurate and
appealing. Such as Gail Carson Levine, Jane Yolen, Judy Blume,
Maurice Sendak, etc.

Thanks,

RE: [ha-Safran]: Holocaust Books for children

2009-10-19 Thread Toby Harris
I agree. The Book Thief is not appropriate for middle school and
definitely not a way to teach about the Holocaust! I consider it for
9th or 10th grade and up; the more mature, the more they will get out
of it! Perhaps this teacher needs to learn how to enhance her Anne
Frank curriculum. There are many ways for her to supplement the
Diary of Anne Frank to make the curriculum meaningful for all
students. Have your sister print out some book lists from our
bibliography bank and offer them to the teacher. In addition, she
needs to contact her nearest Holocaust resource center or refer her
online to others. Our local one is excellent and enlightens many
public school teachers with appropriate curriculum choices. Their

I agree that AJL should absolutely contact Book Links magazine and
set them straight! As for the Boy in Striped PJs, you can look at it
as a parable for ignorance, however, it's not especially well written
or remarkable! Sounds like they did no homework for that article!

[ha-Safran]: Boys immigration

2009-05-21 Thread Toby Harris
Shalom!

I'm doing a summer book group with a theme of Jewish children in
survival mode after immigrating to another country. Book choices so far are:

King of Mulberry Street, by Donna Jo Napoli

Shanghai Shadows, by Lois Ruby

Night of the Burning, by Linda Wulf

The Return, by Sonia Levitin

I'd like to come up with another one which might attract boys. I
looked through the bibliography bank but nothing jumped out at me. Any ideas?

I'm encouraging middle school aged children at our synagogue and
another to read one of the books or however many of them they want
before we meet. The books all have some common elements: leaving
their home countries due to discrimination and hatred, feeling they
must or actually having to look after themselves, being faced with
culture shock. I look forward to some great discussions!

Thanks…

[ha-Safran]: Cataloging-Weine

2008-09-24 Thread Toby Harris
Hello, catalogers:

The book is Harry Potter and Torah, by Dov Krulwich. Krulwich
examines ideas from the Harry Potter series with Jewish insights and
Biblical values. He uses very specific examples and ideas from
Potter and relates them to Talmudic concepts, midrash, Torah, etc.
citing sources throughout. I used this as a starting point for a
What's Jewish about Harry Potter? workshop in the summer 2007. It
was loads of fun but it took me a year to retrieve the book from an
interested attendee and I'd like to get it on the shelf now! I'm
thinking Jewish Ethics, 170 currently, but thought I'd put it out
there for other ideas

Thanks!

RE: [ha-Safran]: The Hasafran mailing list

2008-05-29 Thread Toby Harris
I respectfully disagree as well. I enjoy seeing what the NY chapters
and others are doing, topics being covered, names of lecturers
(perhaps they are names I want to be familiar with). I also enjoy
the political arguments because it indicates the diversity of Jews on
Hasafran and who they are, where they stand both professionally and
politically. And Hasafran is an online community - community is the
key word, I hope. Though I'm in a big city and know other Judaic
librarians, I essentially work in isolation and Hasafran is something
I look forward to checking. Deleting is quick and painless, much
easier than weeding books!

[ha-Safran]: Book covering

2007-11-28 Thread Toby Harris
Has anyone had experience with laminating dust jackets instead of
using traditional products? When I first came on board here, book
covers were being laminated instead of covered with polyester and
other products made for that purpose. At first, I thought it was
horrible, even to save time and money. My concerns were that it was
becoming a permanent part of the book, was it acid free, and it felt
weird. But now, after using regular book covers, I'm reconsidering -
but only if it's acid free.
This is for a large synagogue collection.

Subject: FW: Library on-line

The Washington State Holocaust Education Center is looking for
software to put our lending library of books and multi-media on-line.

We serve a state-wide constituency and we want teachers and students
to be able to view our collection on-line and be able to check out
books as well.

We currently use Readerware to catalogue our collection of 2,500
items that relate to the Holocaust and Holocaust education.

If anyone has used a software for this purpose, please let us know
what you used, how to contact the vendor, and how it has worked for you.

Thank you very much,

RE: [ha-Safran]: Question about signing out books

2007-02-01 Thread Toby Harris
Here's another way:

I created a Self Check-Out Form. Patrons must fill in the date,
their name, the title of the book and the barcode number. The first
4 numbers of all our barcodes are the same, so to make it easier for
them to fill in the barcode number, the form includes those first
4. They have to fill in the rest. I ask for title to ensure that
they match up. If not, I can usually look up the correct barcode
number. These blank forms are kept on a clipboard with a pen
attached, on my desk, facing out to patrons. The form suggests they
fill in the due date and I have included the loan period on the form.
It has worked well. This form has also been handy for book displays
at events and/or when I take books to a classroom for special programming.

I have also posted a stop sign on the door asking if they have
remembered to check out their books.

[ha-Safran]: Collection Assessment summary

2006-12-24 Thread Toby Harris
A few people asked me to provide a summary of my responses regarding
the assessment of our collection.
So far, I have heard from booksellers, librarians, and
consultants. Advice I was given by one is not to rush to sell or
give away anything - that the state of Washington is not rich in
Judaica, compared to the East Coast, and a warning about the
self-interest of some.

Another sent me some good questions to consider: Do you have a
mandate to reduce the size of the collection? Do you have a list of
important books in each of your core areas: Judaica, Teacher
Curriculum, General? Are there guidelines from the state that will help?

Another reminded me of the fickleness of book values.

No one mentioned consultant fees

These responses were helpful for me in redefining and refining my
reasons for wanting to evaluate the collection; and another reminder
of how crucial this step is for developing a collection development
policy and library planning. Because I am a new librarian, and
though Jewish, not a Judaica subject specialist, I especially
appreciate AJL and its resources!

If I hear more tidbits worth passing on, I'll let the list
know. Thanks for all the support!

[ha-Safran]: Collection assessment

2006-12-20 Thread Toby Harris
Chag Sameach:

We are in the process of doing some planning and would like to assess
our collection. We are trying to identify books of great historical
significance, high monetary value, rare books, etc. How does one go
about finding a knowledgeable and reputable consultant for that
purpose? Are there resources which could help me identify and assess
the collection such as which editions may be better than others for
certain reference books? We have over 10,000 materials. Please
respond off-list. Thank you!

Shalom:

For those using the Weine classification system, where did you put
The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman? Thanks for your cataloging advice!

[ha-Safran]: Dead sea scrolls

2006-03-08 Thread Toby Harris
Dear Safranim:

Does anyone have recommendations for recent books about the Dead Sea
Scrolls other than Schiffman's Reclaiming the Dead Sea Scrolls and
Allon's Mystery of the Dead Sea Scrolls? I'm looking for both adult
and juvenile materials. The exhibit is coming here to Seattle next
Fall and I want our congregation to be prepared! Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Weine

2005-12-07 Thread Toby Harris
Dear Safranim:

Does anyone know of or have access to a conversion chart created by Rita
Frischer which converts Elazar classifications to Weine? It's fairly
old... Thanks!
