Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document?
Mike, although I already got help with resolving my problem, I'd very much like to know how to assign a program to open a file. I've come across this situation so many times and I just don't know how to complete that action. I'm running JAWS latest version, Windows 7 and Word 2010. I hope I included all the info you asked for. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jo -Original Message- From: Mike B. The file extension, .doc, is the old file extension for MS Word prior to Word 2007, & possibly 2003, but I'm not sure about 2003. If you have a newer version of Word installed, you will also need to have the, Compatibility Pack, installed. This program allows newer versions of Office to open, read, & edit older files from older Office versions. So, if you're running Windows 7 open the control panel, press the letter, P, until you have Programs & Features highlighted, press enter to open, press the letter, G, & when you land on, Google Chrome, press the applications key or shift + F10 to open the context menu, & press enter on uninstall to get rid of the Google Chrome browser. To keep this from happening again there is this little program called Unchecky that will uncheck nasty little checkboxes like this for you automatically. Anyone who is concerned about unintentionally installing promotional software may be interested in trying Unchecky. http://unchecky.com/ It runs in the background as a service and monitors for recognized installers. It then automatically unchecks any checkboxes related to installing toolbars, browsers, and similar unwanted products. I have not thoroughly tested the program and it is not guaranteed to catch everything, but there have already been several updates since the initial release so I'm sure it's detection rate will improve. It will not remove anything which has already been installed. It only monitors installers. It is a tool for prevention, not for removal. Take care. Mike Global warming? Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS stopped working properly after I downloaded latest build of JAWS16.
Hi All, After I downloaded and installed the latest update for JAWS16, whatever I tried to do, it kept saying something like unknown function called to, "isbrailleonlyregion" and I couldn't get anywhere. I tried a system restore, but it didn't repair the error. I then uninstalled JAWS16 and I'm now back to using JAWS15. If I reinstall JAWS16 from the dvd, should I attempt to reinstall the latest update? Has anyone heard of this particular error and what does it mean? I'm using Windows 7 and IE 11. Hi again, Thanks to all for the information I was looking for. Jo -- From: "Mike O'Brien" Sent: August 13, 2014 1:15 PM To: Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Is there a Spam Blocker program that works well with JAWS? Hi You might want to consider changing your email address. It's a real pain to change your email address, having to notify your friends and family and re-subscribe to all your email list, but it might be the only solution. If your current address has just gotten into the hands of too many spammers, an anti-spam program may not be able to keep up. If you do change addresses, you might want to consider setting up multiple addresses, such as one for personal stuff and another for email lists. Re: [JAWS-Users] How can I go back from IE 10 to IE 8?
Hi, My computer automatically installed IE 10. As a result, I can no longer do things I'm used to doing like reading newspapers, and navigate certain websites. I know it's probably settings that need to be changed, but I don't know which ones. In control panel, I've never had luck with changing my theme. I do what I think should be done which is to be set to classic, but every time I check it, it seems to be on another theme or "unsaved theme." Where can I uninstall IE 10 so my life can return to what I feel is normal for me? I've always welcomed changes in technology, but Windows7 and I have just never gotten along for some reason. This situation happened too with IE 9, but I was able to revert to 8, but I don't remember what I did because I tried so many different things. I went to the control panel and checked to have updates downloaded, but let me choose when to install, but even that didn't make much difference to Microsoft. I'm running windows7 with JAWS14 latest build. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I would like to work with IE 10 if I had a step-by-step instructional explanation regarding all necessary changes, but for now, I need to go back to IE 8. Thanks in advance for your help. I could be on the desktop or in a folder with file names. It makes no difference. When I bring up the desktop, the cursor does not always land back on the Icon that I Started with. For example, I press enter on my computer, perform my task and Alt+F4. When the desktop is displayed, the cursor could be on another Icon instead of my computer icon. This is the same when I go into a folder. I could be on a file that I want to open and when I press enter on it, the cursor jumps to another file and opens that one. This can also happen when in my favorites. I press enter on a particular shortcut that I want to go to and the cursor jump to another shortcut and bring up that web page. I don't have to press enter for the cursor to jump. I can land on a file name and not doing anything, the cursor jumps anyway. This problem doesn't occur within an application like Excel or Word. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the video intercept? Perhaps the video intercept is corrupted and/or needs to be repaired or updated? This problem happens in both the latest Jaws 12 and Jaws13. I am using windows XP . I have a laptop with windows7 and this problem does not occur in either Jaws12 &13. Does Jaws 12 or 13 use video intercept or have FS change this? Any suggestion on how to correct this problem will greatly be appreciated. Thank you. Take care. Hi, I'm having the exact same problem and I, too feel it's not the mouse. Lennie, I've read your explanation over and over and it mirror's my problem exactly. Re: [JAWS-Users] latest Jaws update
I've been switching to JAWS12 to use the BARD website since the last update of JAWS because my PW was not accepted by the site. Before that, I had the same problem and I contacted FS and with a tandem session it was corrected. With the latest build JAWS13.0.924 the problem resurfaced. I'm glad to learn of the current situation, because although I already downloaded the new version, I think I'll stay with what I've got now and not install the update. Re: [JAWS-Users] Questions about Ninite and Speedmax
I've read so much about Ninite on this list and I'd like to try it. However, I don't seem to understand, is it free or not? If not, how can I decide if it works for me without paying for it first? It looks like a great program, but Windows7 hasn't been as friendly to me as previous versions of Windows. And speaking of programs, has anyone heard of one called Speedmax? I asked this a few weeks ago, but since I received no response I'm assuming no one has. Is that correct? I'm running Windows7 with latest version of JAWS 13. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hi All, Well, here I am again. Because I have JAWS talking, I tried to get the update for JAWS12. Re: [JAWS-Users] AUTOMATICALLY START JAWS
Hi All, Thanks for all your suggestions. Well, I tried power options and FS also checked to see that they were set to "never". I'm not sure this is a JAWS issue, though, but when I leave the computer for awhile, it just stays where it is. Yesterday, A friend came to see if she could help. When she tried to use the mouse, it, too, didn't work. We had to turn it off in order for her to use the mouse. Today, I did what FS suggested, leave narrator running to see if it was still there. It wasn't. Neither was NVDA. When this happens the screen is dark, but my friend could see that the computer was on. This is a brand new computer with Windows 7 and I don't have any idea what I can do next. I'll give FS another try to see if anyone can come up with a solution or a suggestion. I'm wondering if it's a Windows issue. Again, thanks to all who responded. Hi, Thanks for your response. When I went to the JAWS menu, I checked the voices submenu and found that the voices submenu was disabled. With some patience and a great deal of frustration, I somehow got narrator up and running because NVDA, too had decided to shut down. I downloaded JAWS and now I'm trying to configure my computer only to be told that I'm not authorized to perform that action. I know it has something to do with administrative tools.
