[JAWS-Users] when using any media player jaws volume lowers considerably
Now I remember many of us struggling many years ago with the problem I'm having, usually happening with the old real player but also with some winamp output plug-ins. So I'm surprised that it's happening and I know my settings are right. Jaws is set to allow other audio and my players are no different than they've always been. But whether it's Jaws 16 or 18--the 2 I have on my windows 7 system--if I play an audio file and use Jaws, the Jaws volume goes down super low. I don't have loud volume on my media players mostly because I want to work with other programs while listening to music. But as soon as an audio file starts I can barely hear Jaws. The file stops; Jaws comes right back up to the right volume. This is a dell system with real tech high definition, and between Jaws going out and the shaky type sound of the files I don't know if it's sound card or external speakers or maybe Jaws needs repair? [JAWS-Users] how to fix a windows 10 sound card
I believe a recent update in windows 10 messed up my sound card, because in May, whenever this update was downloaded, I had no sound after the update and my daughter helped get sound back. But I still get this message at startup: "smart audio, a Conexan file cannot be found." And I can't play audio through headphones. When headphones are plugged in all sound goes through the computer. I have researched this problem and of course forums recommend disabling drivers and reenabling them, but obviously those of us who need a screenreader can't do this because the computer will go silent again if I were to disable and try reenabling sound in order to fix the sound card. I wish I could find and undo the particular update that changed sound, but it doesn't seem to be showing the dates of the updates in my view update history section. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and email question
It sounds like either your columns are needing a reset or maybe it would help to make sure the program is maximized. Usually when things like this come up I first make sure it's maximized. I can't tell you how to do this with windows live 2012 because ribbons are involved and I'm not sure how to navigate them. But another problem could be found in the "sort by columns" part. I've had to fix items like to, from, subject, etc. in that sort by columns area so that could be the reason the subject line isn't showing. I don't know much about it or what kind of rating or cautionary measures it may have, but at least for now I feel I need to do whatever it takes to block this thing. - Original Message - From: "Lenny McHugh" To: "JFW List" Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2016 2:49 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] win 10 auto update no choice My grandson just came home from school. Re: [JAWS-Users] auto update to windows 10
Yes I had questions about my windows updates and how most of them lately show as failed. But the problem is I can't even check for updates, because the screen says I have a pending update so I can't even look at the updates. And it always says "restart now," as if it's gonna force installation of 10 if I do restart. In my case it probably wouldn't install because many new updates are showing as failed. But I wonder if I could get this windows 10 message out of updates I could try installing only the updates I want. If anyone knows how to get this windows 10 message out of windows updates I would very much appreciate knowing how. - Original Message - From: "David Ferrin" To: Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2016 8:13 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] auto update to windows 10 Now this is new and a bit annoying I must say. [JAWS-Users] does anyone use classic shell with windows 10 to make menus look more like 7 or XP?
I have read a few excellent tutorials on windows 10 and Jaws, and 10 is on my laptop so I know I'll have to deal with it when I'm away and using the laptop. Both my PC's still have 7 thankfully, but I'm wondering about when I have to use 10 and its unfamiliar layout, has anyone used Classic Shell to make the menus look more like the menus in 7? If you go to the start menu in windows 10 the way it's set up, I don't see a programs tree view where you used to be able to see your list of programs and accessories, etc. Does Classic Shell still even work or would you recommend another program that will set up 10 to look more familiar? I hope I'm not going off-topic, because I of course would need a Jaws-friendly program or other ways around these tricky menus or apps as they're now being called, so that I can maximize my experience using 10 and Jaws without wanting to give up. One of the Davids in the group was very helpful in showing me how to get around lower and upper ribbons i n lists by using context menu key. So hopefully there'll be other hints that will make this thing usable when I need to do so. Thanks. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] can someone post how to repair jaws please?
Awhile back someone posted 3 ways to repair Jaws. The most helpful way for me was the third way which was similar to the way I repaired it in older versions where you go to a place that asked if you wanted to modify or repair. Re: [JAWS-Users] can ribbon menus be removed in windows 10
I hope I won't get in trouble for possibly making this more of a thank you message, and yes those can clutter an in box. But I do want to say that, for example, in the case of ribbons, I appreciated David Bales' suggestions and they worked beautifully. I like that this group presents many approaches to the handling of apps and various work-arounds using Jaws. We're all learning, and for those of us who don't always understand new apps or layouts I appreciate help from those who can present an easier or, to me, familiar way of reaching my goals. I wouldn't mind learning more about ribbons and maybe there's a tutorial to explain them. But they don't make sense to me and I can't picture their layout or how to find their menus. Someone suggested turning the virtual ribbon feature off in Jaws and I know many others use it. I'd be glad to hear an explanation of what exactly they are and how to find the menus you need. I am using older email programs for this very reason--ribbons don't make sense. So if there's a tutorial that explains them thoroughly I would check one out if anyone knows of one. But in the meantime I'm so relieved there are still other ways to avoid them till I learn more. Joanne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

[JAWS-Users] installed Jaws 17 but license not recognized
I have twice had to system restore because when attempting to install Jaws 17 I am asked for my license code. Even if I switch to 16, something in the installation of 17 seems to erase the license and the only way to use Jaws in regular mode is to restore the system and use 16. I went to the page to activate it and the page found it just fine. Then it gave me another code to use, and not sure why this other code was given but I tried activating my license pasting the original key and also trying this generated one but it keeps giving an error message that it doesn't recognize the code. Now the generated code is 3 lines long and I don't know if the words at the end are necessary--like version 00, etc. I don't know why the FS page recognizes it but neither code will work when Jaws tells me I need to type in my key. Is there something I can do that's not being done so I can use 17 in regular and not 40-minute mode? Thanks for assistance. [JAWS-Users] how to handle items that aren't links or buttons but will take you to a new page
Didn't know how to say it but I'm sure you have run into these things that I can't call links or buttons, but you can tell that they are items that need a space bar or an enter to get you to another page. For instance, one of my banks shows a list of things and then you see the word submit, or continue, or anything like that. But submit is not a button or link; it's just the word submit. Sometimes I'm lucky and a simple enter will get me to the page where I've submitted something. But usually it just sits there and I don't know a Jaws command to make this new type of link work. Trying to be specific and hoping I explain this correctly. Using Jaws 15 and most of the time Internet Explorer but I have Firefox as well. Not sure if it will do this in FF, but in IE 11 what happens is I want to go to a Web page and I can't see the links because it puts me in that spot which I've hated from the beginning and wish I could get rid of. It definitely goes to the page because you can see the page's address, but I'm stuck in that menu where a tab button and a page refresh button are shown. Oh yeah it also says tool bar and probably some other things I'm missing. It won't just go past that point and start announcing links I can click on. With a lot of trial and error and turning off and back on the virtual PC cursor, I can eventually make it work. [JAWS-Users] jaws won't start at windows log-in even though it's set up to
This has just started recently and I don't know how to make Jaws not only start when windows comes on, but it even isn't in the speaker settings like it usually is. I'm using windows 7 and I have jaws 13 and 14, and I even did a reinstall and told it to start using the all users settings. It may start once or twice but then seems to disappear. It seems to be in running processes but I can't even bring it up with desktop icon. I've always seen it in speaker volume settings but it just seems to have disappeared. Has this happened to anyone and can someone help? Joanne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] need 2 types of restore programs that are jaws friendly
My friend would like to restore her computer because some programs aren't working correctly, but when I tried to help her with system restore we discovered that system restore has never been turned on. I have heard groups talk about programs like Roll Back, but with these programs shouldn't System Restore still have been turned on so there'd be restore points for, say, Roll Back to do its job? Her Outlook 2010 isn't showing anything in any folders, and she is wanting to restore to an early time. So is this possible with another program besides System Restore? She also wants to restore documents that were accidentally deleted from recycle bin. I have Requva, but if anyone has another Jaws-accessible file restoration program I would appreciate learning of it. So looking for a file restoration and some type of computer restoration program to see if we can get things back to normal. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] has anyone had trouble clicking some buttons and what did you do?
Are there simply some button types that absolutely can't be clicked? Some sites that require electronic signatures simply won't move my I agree button; it just sits there no matter what I try to do. I have routed cursors, tried to hold shift down to get it in a new browser window. If anyone has any helpful hints will gladly receive. [JAWS-Users] Jaws isn't focusing correctly and sometimes reads phantom characters
This is the case with all 3 Jaws versions I have--12, 13 and 14. And now that the repair process has been changed to something I still don't understand how to do, I can't do a repair and would hate to uninstall and lose my keys. Jaws loses focus a lot and I am moved out of my window, and I also have the problem of, when trying to erase characters in a file, Jaws reads extra phantom characters that aren't even part of the file. When using Winamp it will say the previous track and then correct itself to say the track I'm on. It's sort of like something in the video driver isn't dumping information from its memory--like the song track that it's not even on--or it's foggy and may possibly be on a bad screen resolution or color or something. I am using Windows 7 with classic theme, and my resolution is 1024/768 which F.S. had recommended for XP. It is now not showing an entire list and is only seeming to see the bottom item. Does anyone have a suggestion for getting the video to interpret what's on the screen correctly? I have run the free program from System Access to Go, just to see if it could be a computer or screen problem. But it read right so I know I need to do something in Jaws. Thanks for any input. [JAWS-Users] does it matter what screen resolution we have it on in windows 7
F.S. used to recommend resolution of 1024/768 for WP, but is this the preferred resolution setting for Windows 7? I ask because Jaws 14 is reading extra characters in some files. For instance, in trying to rename a file and spelling it out by character I will hear Jaws say nonsense like zero or semicolon or something before it says the actual letter I'm supposed to be on. There also seems to be some extraneous characters being spoken when I check my status line in Windows Live Mail. If not resolution do you recommend something else in display to help Jaws focus better and read what's actually on the screen without reading extra characters? Will appreciate suggestions. [JAWS-Users] jaws crashing while I'm playing files in winamp
Seems to happen quite frequently now, where after a time playing files in Winamp Jaws goes silent. In fact it seems like a whole part of the sound card not used by Winamp locks up. Winamp keeps playing so it's not a total computer freeze, but I can't get any speech no matter what I do. I have used both Jaws 13 and 14 and it happens in both versions. Hope you can help. [JAWS-Users] when renaming files, jaws sometimes speaks extra characters
It's actually when I'm doing what you might call and edit/rename. If I want some of the name to stay as is but I need to add words or perhaps number it, as I'm looking at the characters--and this is only in the renaming field and not at other times--Jaws will confuse me by saying things like 0 or semicolon and then the actual character in the word. It kind of reminds me of when I used to read my friend's Braille Light and when the display got old it looked like there were dots underneath the actual words. I am using Jaws 14 but not sure if my other versions do this as well, but it's almost like Jaws isn't totally focused on my file when I hit f2 to rename, and like it's seeing other characters underneath the actual ones. Don't know if I'm making sense but I wondered if anyone ever had it say other characters before it says the character it should be saying. Hope someone can help. [JAWS-Users] some links won't open even when hitting shift enter
I have noticed that some links will not open at all, and this happens on many websites of late. I may not have my HTML or some other setting set right, but even trying to do a shift enter, which works sometimes because some links open in a new browser window, doesn't help. This is Jaws 14 so not sure if it's a Jaws 14 thing or something in my configuration settings. I also get the message on some pages that tell me to upgrade I.E. but I refuse to use 9 because a lot of people have had trouble navigating or downloading using 9. Are some links configured in some way to where Jaws can't line up with the link and open? I can switch to another version to see if the problem persists but wanted to ask first if anyone has seen kind of a frequent thing with websites where links just won't open. And it's not the whole site, just to be clear. It's just certain links on the sites, which leads me to believe there's something about the link itself that makes it impossible to open. Do I have to put it back to mouse-over setting in HTML? I have it not to speak that but should it be put back, as some links have something to do with something mouse-over related? Which I don't really know the meaning of but just puzzled about this whole thing. Hope someone can help. [JAWS-Users] how to handle a graphic that needs to be clicked on
On some sites there is a place where it will say "graphic" and in order to use the site or perform an application you have to somehow click the graphic. I have tried routing cursors but it really doesn't put it on the graphic. An example is, with my credit union some transactions--such as electronic signatures--say something like graphic sign here. Well hitting space bar or enter or left click doesn't seem to allow me to finish the transaction. Is this not possible to do with Jaws or is there a key combo that will help us with these graphics? [JAWS-Users] trouble installing jaws update/keeps clicking and says please wait but nothing happening
As I type I'm hearing the installation clicks for the update, and every time I re-start and try it again the same thing happens. It's stalling out or moving so slow that this actually could take hours, as last night I did have computer on for over an hour waiting for the installation. I even removed jaws 14, keeping components and using 12 or 13 so I had speech. I didn't update from my check for updates; I went to F.S. and got the download. So I have the F.S. download, removing my jaws 14, hoping it would install cleanly, but nothing's moving. Is there something I can do to get this installing? Or should I get a different download from the FTP one? I have a 64 bit machine and this is a 64 bit download so everything checks out. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] will I need to use 2 Jaws keys when my computer becomes a windows 7 pro and an Xp machine?
I am upgrading my Windows 7 home premium computer to a Windows 7 Pro so I can have the ability to also add XP and use XP for the most part. I know that when we upgrade to 7 Pro I will have to re-install Jaws, which will of course use up one of my keys from F.S. Since this system will also have XP, do I also have to install Jaws in the XP part? If so, this, of course, would use up 2 keys so wondering if that's what I'll have to do in order to have both operating systems--two operating systems, 2 separate installs of Jaws. [JAWS-Users] desktop keyboard doesn't seem to have a num-lock key
I am attempting to use the USB keyboard that came with my machine. It isn't a wireless keyboard, and for the most part the keys seem to be set up in the traditional way. But are there such things as new keyboards without num pads? I can't find one anywhere, and I'd like to use it when I, of course, need to use Jaws keys or Jaws key combos. Are they really making some without the num pad now? Or have you perhaps used new keyboards and found this key in some obscure place? Thanks for any help. [JAWS-Users] are certain video cards better than others for Jaws to work well
I am using an XPS system with Windows 7 64 bit. I had lots of trouble getting Jaws to respond well and it moved very slowly and lost focus a lot, and this is an 8 gig memory machine. The machine itself moves fast otherwise but I wonder why Jaws is sluggish, and know others have mentioned their graphics or video card--and I hope graphics and video card mean the same thing. Now today it seems to not be doing too bad, but I notice it does that little stutter thing occasionally and sometimes it doesn't keep up with me while I'm going through a list. It reminds me of the response it gave me on my E machine, but that I chalked up to very little memory. With all other applications I do on the computer moving fast, I'm wondering about these little Jaws glitches and don't know if there's a video intercept type setting in Jaws that may make it more responsive and less likely to do the little stutter thing? Or is this all related to my own video card and does F.S. recommend only certain brands or types of these cards? Also, I know that with Windows 7 there aren't any solid recommendations from F.S. regarding display, but do you find certain text displays and screen resolutions more helpful as far as Jaws focus? I have found the info on my card. It is: AMD Radeon HD 7570 1GB DDR5 I am using Jaws versions 12 and 13 interchangeably. Thanks for your input. [JAWS-Users] would like instructions for how to use Jaws on a laptop
I do use a regular keyboard with my laptop, since I'm used to that layout and of course the function keys and insert key are easy to find and use with Jaws. But should I ever really need to--which I hope will not be often--, is there a tutorial or list of hot keys and where they might be located on a laptop? For instance, I have heard you can't use the insert key and I'm not really sure where it is anyway. Not really even sure where control keys or start menu keys, etc. are, and by luck I found the arrow keys. But I would like to learn my way around a laptop and learn what keys would be Jaws specific. [JAWS-Users] very strange problem/can't get on the Net after installing Jaws update
I have tried installing this 2 different ways--through the help menu in Jaws, and by going to F.S. site and downloading and installing the latest Jaws 13. I have never seen this happen, and this happened with another recommended accessible program as well. Before installing the update, I am online just fine. After installation and re-start, even though network settings say I'm wireless connected with excellent connection, I can't get online. Internet Explorer keeps saying 1 percent, 7 percent, and connecting tab, etc. I don't understand how I could be connected, and yet installing the update actually makes it impossible for me to go back online. Has this ever happened to anyone, and is there anything at all I can do? I've had to restore my system several times and just turn down the update installation when it asks if I want to update. I really hope someone can help. I even did a repair but just hasn't done any good. Joanne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] question on purchasing Jaws upgrades
Hello. I am confused about something the salesperson said and I wanted to ask the group about this to make sure. I didn't have to do this before, or maybe the cost has just gone up a lot, but I wondered if we now have to pay $200 for the pro version and if this $200 only covers the current version with no upgrades. I thought I had, in the past, purchased my upgrades and I always received 2 upgrades within that price, and before the cost had never been $400--$200 for, say, Jaws 13 and then an extra $200 for 2 more upgrades. I am current on my upgrades and haven't skipped but am now using 12, wanting to go to 13. I do not want to start any debates about cost or any of that, and the moderator certainly doesn't want this either. It's more a confusion I have than anything, because I was sure that, with past purchases, the price didn't double when I made one purchase for 3 versions. I hope someone can clarify. [JAWS-Users] when clicking on system tray items it shows desktop icons
Not sure how else to say subject line, but what happens is, let's say I want to go to system tray and find Jaws or MSIE or any item in the tray. I hit enter, and instead of going to the options that pertain to the item--options like maybe open, exit, etc.--it shows the icons on desktop. Volume, for instance, is a good example. Instead of saying "open volume control" when entering on the volume icon in the tray, it says "my documents, my computer", etc. Then if I hit escape and go to the tray again and open volume, at that time it is in the menu pertaining to the volume's options. I don't know if this is a Jaws problem or not, but I do know that hitting insert F11 shouldn't show desktop icons when entering on a tray item, and why it would show the correct menus the second time instead of the first is kind of a mystery. [JAWS-Users] cannot erase and write a date over a filled-in edit field
I have a situation where, on a bank site, you should be able to fill in a date for making automatic payments. Normally, with forms mode on, one can backspace over the date or numbers that are already there, and then replace the edit field with whatever you want to replace it with. Also, I can't even read the numbers that are there with forms mode on. In other words, I can't cursor left or right to see where I am in the field. I'm sure I'm not explaining this right, but using Jaws 12 or 10--tried both--with Internet Explorer 8. My main computer is XP, and I even went to my Windows 7 laptop and same scenario: unable to backspace through an edit field so I can replace it with new info. [JAWS-Users] asked this before but need to explain more/jaws 12 saying too much after a list item
I really hope someone who knows how to use this new type of configuration manager in Jaws 12 might know how to set verbosity up right. With verbosity supposedly on advanced--although I can't really confirm this with the new config manager--Jaws is speaking things after list items in a folder that I don't need spoken. Verbosity says Jaws short message, but when going through a list I hear different things spoken after the items. I may hear something like, the name of a song or show or something, and after the name it may say file menu tools, favorites, etc. Or instead of saying file menu, etc., it will say the size and length of the item listed and how many items are selected. I do use my insert 3 sometimes when I want to read a status line, but I don't know why so much is spoken after the selected item. I just want it to say the name and one of 23 or whatever, like version 10 did. Is there a fix? And on a side note, is there any way I can revert back to a more familiar configuration like earlier versions had? Thanks. [JAWS-Users] how to get jaws 12 to not say 1 item selected
With Jaws 10, if I select an item in a list it speaks the item but doesn't say "1 item selected" after the item. [JAWS-Users] in new jaws 12, stopping it from saying too much
I didn't know how else to introduce topic, but I don't know if something can be changed in the new Jaws 12 to get it to not say a couple things that my Jaws 10 didn't say. First, if I select a lot or even a couple items it says "2 items selected" and then says what the items are. Or as you're reading through your list view it says, for instance, a song's name and then says file edit view, like it's reading a menu and I never hit the alt key. When I'm hitting control O to open an item in internet explorer, it keeps speaking search for as I try typing an address to open. I don't have it set to characters for typing, but it'll say search for as I'm typing the Web address. My verbosity is on advanced, but is there something in verbosity that I can check to get it to speak only the item and not to go into this file edit thing, and to not speak during an open web address when hitting control O? [JAWS-Users] cannot keep a checkbox unchecked
I have read the F.S. recommended settings for display, using XP. I am trying to follow the directions for task bar and start menu, because I think that these directions might help to show all my system tray items. [JAWS-Users] Jaws 12 not reading paragraphs or emails as my other versions did
Well first, I am using latest Jaws 12 with XP Home, and with both Jaws 11 and 12 I don't like the way it reads my Outlook Express mail. When I hit delete and go to the next message it appears to not go to the very top, where you can hear who it's from. It says, for instance, 13 links, but you don't hear the name as in Jaws 10. So that bugs me. But the other thing it's doing is, when I go to proofread mail and sometimes want to read something by paragraph, using control down arrow, it won't stop at one paragraph. For instance, say I want to see something in paragraph 3. You can't; it won't control down arrow to the paragraph and acts like there's no paragraph break. I removed my version that I downloaded with the Jaws updates feature and reinstalled from F.S. site, but it's still reading incorrectly. Can someone help? So far Jaws 12 is working great. Very responsive on both my XP and Windows 7 computer. And what a surprise to find Winamp scripts for my 64 bit machine finally. [JAWS-Users] hope this is Jaws-related/can't create a hot key
I hope not off-topic, but as I use Jaws and learned about hot keys from using this program I really need help. I have hot keys set up in places like Jaws or Internet Explorer, etc., and I used to have one in Windows Media Library. But when I clicked on properties of the library it doesn't show that target key hot key item in general tab like it used to. It says something about 3 state button and there's no edit field anymore so I can fix this. I don't know if this is Jaws-related and Jaws isn't seeing that edit box, or if something got damaged with the folder to where it doesn't give the hot key option anymore under properties, general tab. What I want to be able to do, and I don't know if it's possible, is to read a list of numbers as single digits. For instance, if you have an account number or card number that is long, it's hard to hear it spoken in millions, thousands, etc. So I changed it in text processing to speak one number at a time. Works great with a group of long numbers, but now it says 1 1 for 11, 1 5 for 15, etc. Is there any way to make it so, if you go over a certain amount of numbers, it will go to speak them one at a time, but not necessarily the lower numbers? If not I guess I'll have to have it speak individual numbers in a list, but hoping there might be some type of workaround. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] program and help needed for converting image PDF to OCR file
Some of my very important documents have been sent to me from places like banks and legal places, but they are in picture PDF form. I did look on the programs page and thought the PDF to OCR would be perfect, but when extracted it shows a list of 8 things and I have no idea what any of these items does. There isn't a help file, and there doesn't seem to be menus for conversion or places where you can select a PDF file and folder to browse, etc. I don't even see it in programs in start menu or on desktop. It simply unzips unrecognizable folders but I don't feel it's completely installed. If someone has a solution for this or even another easier program so Jaws can read these image files, please let me know. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] possible work-around for when seeing no links on a web page
Well it keeps happening with more and more consistency--that problem of opening a Web page and not being able to find links. I know others made suggestions such as turning off and on virtual cursor or refreshing page. These have worked at times, but I found something else that I don't know whether or not this has been discussed. Lately I started just plain leaving the window--just alt-tabbing to something else for a minute or so. Then when I alt-tab back to my Internet page the links seem to be there. I don't know if this is fool-proof and would work consistently for everyone, but this seems to be the method that works most of the time for me. I am hoping this is on topic, as it seems that the newer versions of Jaws have caused these blank pages to happen more often. But just thought I'd share what seems to be working well here as far as being able to see Web pages instead of just seeing them blank. Mike, it's okay. I do appreciate your help with tool bars. I wasn't sure if certain tool bars could make Jaws not work as well, so am going to try this. - Original Message - From: "Mike & Barbara" To: Sent: Monday, March 29, 2010 9:56 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] internet explorer showing blank pages whenusingjaws Hi Joann; I am sorry. I didn't notice that you said that you are using Jaws 10 & 11 at the top of your message. I guess I should wake the hell up before listening to Jaws! LOL Anyway, in IE8, I have in the view menu / tool bars, only these tool bars checked; menu bar, status bar, & lock the tool bars. I don't use tab browsing, so that is disabled. I don't browse the Internet much at all and so I have very few issues with IE8. Again, my apologies for responding with only half of 1 ear in focus. Take care. Mike, It's tax time! [JAWS-Users] are there yet scripts for Winamp on 64 bit machines?
I just wondered if anyone knew anything about this, or might know of someone who may be writing scripts and may want to try making one for Winamp with 64 bit. I'm kind of surprised nothing's come up, so thought I'd inquire. Joanne For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading verbosity list items
I'm using Jaws 10 with XP, and actually this particular problem also occurred when using 11. 10 seems to work overall better for me, but one thing I've noticed is, when I am in config manager and want to look at the list of verbosity items to check or uncheck, Jaws only reads item number one. If I arrow down to the next item and then shift-tab and tab back it'll tell me what item I've selected. But it should just read down the list and it doesn't. I don't yet know if this is the only place it won't read a complete list on; as I explore my newly-built computer I'm so far finding most list views everywhere else reading okay. I have not had to change much in config, so can't tell you if there are other places there where a list won't read, but definitely the verbosity list will only read first item. Hope someone can help. [JAWS-Users] what screen resolution do you recommend for windows 7
I don't really know if there is a difference in XP or Windows 7 settings regarding screen resolution settings. I had thought that for XP Freedom Scientific's recommended setting was 1024/768. But as there hasn't yet been a list of recommended settings for Jaws to work optimally with Windows 7, I'm wondering what setting some of you might have your resolution on and what you think makes Jaws work the best. I've had other reading issues I've asked groups about, but what concerns me now is that I must refresh my screen every time a new message opens in Windows Live Mail. Jaws may sometimes read the next message after one has been deleted, but more times than not the only way to get it to read the next message is to screen-refresh it every time. A friend who remote-connected to help me once also said he couldn't read the screen at 1024/768, but I don't think that selected items or checkboxes were reading correctly at 800/600. I think there may be some type of focus issue, whether screen resolution or something else, because the other thing Jaws will do is just start reading everything on desktop when I go to the desktop--in other words instead of just saying not selected and one item it starts announcing everything on the desktop until I hit the control key. It also does this at startup, like it's having trouble focusing in on one thing. So I'm concerned about either screen or display settings that are perhaps not set correctly. Any thoughts? Re: [JAWS-Users] window 7 and vista
I never used Vista but I did see a friend install and work with it with Jaws. I don't think he cared for it much, but my daughter says some of the menus and the control panel resemble XP. I am right now using a computer--hopefully temporarily--with Windows 7. Some blind people say it works similar to XP but I don't see how. And keeping this on the topic of Jaws, I find that Jaws has a hard time giving us detailed info in Windows 7. I will warn anyone who tries it that the folders are a nightmare, but another Jaws user did give me a fix for this--although Jaws still won't read exactly how many items a folder has. The control panel in 7 is set up with links, and I find it very hard to find what I need to find. And if your computer is a 64-bit, I don't think Jaws scripts have been made for programs like Winamp that I used with ease in XP. F.S. is trying to keep up with these new programs, but I think they're either too graphical or just too hard to get around, and F.S. is doing all they can. I will say that this machine with Windows 7 does a great job surfing the Net. In XP using Internet Explorer 7 it looked like many sites were Jaws-inaccessible. But Windows 7 and Internet 8 seem to work well for working with websites. But it's the off-line features of Windows 7 that I wish could be changed, or at least a more blind-friendly or classical-menu-type setup should come out for us. -- From: "Rick Justice" Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 4:50 AM To: Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] window 7 and vista Hi Kimsan, Windows 7 is really nothing more than a stripped down version of Vista. If I were forced to move to a new operating system from Microsoft, it would certainly not be Vista. So far, my computing experience with Jaws 11 and Windows 7 has been less than desirable. [JAWS-Users] accessibility using media players with windows 7 and 64 bit
Again a question regarding Windows 7 with 64 bit, and it's definitely Jaws-related because I have noticed that Jaws commands I could once use in Winamp are a thing of the past. I don't know if any new scripts have been made for this setup. If not, I'll move on to Windows Media Player and ask if anyone has successfully gotten around its menus and can find its equalizer. Music is flat-sounding in either player, and I would assume Media Player, as part of Windows 7, will have a functional equalizer. I just don't know how to find it, and the menus and buttons don't seem to make a lot of sense. I hope someone can shed light on this. I'm thinking Winamp may not be made to be totally functional with this setup, but is there a way to at least get Jaws 11 to work in Media Player and to find its equalizer? Thanks. [JAWS-Users] jaws giving too much info and repeating in Windows Live Mail
Don't know if this is a verbosity issue or a Windows Live Mail issue, and if anyone can find an easier email client to deal with for Windows 7 I'd appreciate it. For one thing Windows Live Mail puts each account into separate folders, which is a pain. But my Jaws issue is, while scrolling through messages, Jaws says the words "subject" and "received," and it also tells everything from the size of the message to what folder it's in. The other thing that happens is, when I delete a message, Jaws will speak the name of the message I deleted instead of just going to the next message. I cannot switch Jaws versions, unfortunately, because this machine is 64 bit, and this is just one of several Jaws issues I need help with. Thanks. [JAWS-Users] jaws is saying checkbox but won't say if it's checked or unchecked
I probably didn't set something right in either config manager or in my new computer's control panel options--don't know which, as I'm wandering around in this Windows 7 and don't really know a thing about it. But there are some Jaws issues and here's one: Instead of saying if a checkbox is checked or unchecked it just says "checkbox". I am using Jaws 11 for 64-bit, and I notice the options are a little different using this particular Jaws. I hope someone can tell me how to get it to tell me if boxes are checked or unchecked. Re: [JAWS-Users] problem with a file called J hook.dll
Thanks everyone. One more question: Brian was correct in saying each jhook.dll file must stay in its own version, because when I tried to copy from another version ... no more Jaws 11. So would you recommend just reinstalling Jaws 11, or should I first do a clean uninstall and then put it back in? What originally happened was that Firefox or Internet Explorer would crash, and my sighted friend looked at error details and said it had something to do with a corrupt or missing jhook.dll file. So would a complete removal and then a reinstall probably be the best solution to this? Thanks. For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
