Re: [JAWS-Users] JAVA

2017-05-30 Thread Adrian Spratt
There may be some confusion here. Access Bridge is now part of the Java
download. If you installed it separately, you may have overridden the current
version. Separately, a thread on this list a month or two ago went into the
risks of installing Java and its negligible value to JAWS users. Of course, you
may have other reasons for needing Java.

Thanks, managed to find a good article on the web and it also gives a command

With the access bridge installed, the application won't even open unfortunately.

The java access bridge needs to be installed. If you have a newer version of
java the bridge is automatically installed. It does how ever needs to be
turned on. I do not have it on this machine so I can't be of much more help
than that.

It is highly unlikely that you need Java installed on your computer. You are

confusing Java with JavaScript. The later is a scripting language that is a
part of the web browser and enables web developers to do all sorts of zany
things and drive us screen reader users crazy. On the other hand, Java is a
full blown programming language for developing applications. Most home users

do not need Java installed. I removed it from my computers in 2010 and have
never had the need to reinstall it. I never install it on any of my clients
computers and have never received a call from anyone asking to install Java
to resolve a problem with an application that they wanted to run. Java is a
security nightmare and unless you absolutely need it, do not install it. If
you already have it installed, remove it. If you find that you need it at

Hi Adrian,

Well, it didn't take me but a couple of hours before I uninstalled Java.
After installing it I noticed that accessing websites that I use regularly
were loding much slower, & my computer was taking longer to reboot or start.
So Revo & I yanked that sucker out by its roots! Now, websites are back to
loading normally, & my computer is start & restarting normally as well.
Take care.

This is one of those areas for a non-expert like me when I'm confused by the
existence of opinions at the extremes. I've just done a little Google
searching and find the following:

Most browsers now no longer need or support JAVA. Unfortunately, Internet
Explorer still does. Firefox is apparently phasing out Java. Google Chrome
doesn't support it, nor does MS Edge.

Many online commentators say that if you do need Java for a specific
purpose, it should be fine so long as you keep it updated. However, I find
Java's update page completely inaccessible.

I wish I could remember why I reinstalled Java after years of not needing
it. I vaguely recall the absence of Java often made 'submit" buttons
impossible for JAWS to locate. Lately, I've been having that problem with
several websites even with Java installed. Fortunately, JAWS is able to find
these buttons when I switch to Chrome.

So, although I haven't made a final decision, I'm leaning toward
uninstalling Java from my system.

If anyone wants to track the webpages I looked at, here's a link to the
google results page that led me to most of them:

Re: [JAWS-Users] Java & Jaws

2017-04-14 Thread Kenny

There's always a problem it seems.

I'm curious? How many sites or applications do JAWS users encounter
that require JAVA? I know there a lot of on-line gaming sites that
need it to run their plug-ins. For your own needs is it really worth
the risks? I mean if Google has taken steps to stop certain programs
from appearing on their search engine, there must be a serious
problem. Believe other well known sites have also followed suit.

I would just avoid installing them completely, unless I had full
flexibility to enable them on a site by site basis. That's what using
FireFox will give you. That's why I have Adobe Flash installed only
on FireFox. Some important sites I use haven't switched their web
players to the new HTML 5 format, thus I have to use Adobe Flash to
access their content.

At 06:07 PM 4/14/2017, you wrote:
I uninstalled Java about three years ago after the U.S. government
issued this warning. However, I since read that Oracle had fixed the
security vulnerability and that the government withdrew its notice.
Is this over-simplifying? Is there still a problem?

Mike,

The important, relatively recent development is that screenreader users no
longer need to install JAWS Access Bridge in order for them to work with
Java. JAB is now incorporated into the download. JAB used to be a nightmare.

Java is now produced by Oracle, which bought out its developer, Sun Micro.

Hi Adrian,

Well, my 1st install was from, Ninite, but after enabling the Access Bridge
I got an error message, & also after rebooting. Come to find out, the
Ninite installer installed both 32 & 64 bit versions. So, I uninstalled
them both, made sure all Oracle / Java folders were gone from everywhere I
could think of, cleaned my system with CCleaner, & finally reinstalled with
an installer I got from Oracle's website. I enabled the Access Bridge, no
error messages, rebooted, & no error messages, so I think we gotter whipped.
Thanks much.

Mike,

The important, relatively recent development is that screenreader users no
longer need to install JAWS Access Bridge in order for them to work with
Java. JAB is now incorporated into the download. JAB used to be a nightmare.

Java is now produced by Oracle, which bought out its developer, Sun Micro.

You're absolutely correct. Both JAVA and Adobe Flash are on
everyone's hit list for having way too many security vulnerabilities.
It's best you avoid installing them. You get more flexibility
installing Adobe Flash on FireFox for you can enable it's use on a
site by site basis. They may have the same option for JAVA.

and that the government withdrew its notice. Is this over-simplifying? Is

[JAWS-Users] java and jaws

2017-04-14 Thread Judy
Hi, everyone, I enjoyed reading the info about Java. I always thought it was
necessary to keep it up because of how they are doing websites these days,
but now Hans says that it isn't and I am confused. Could someone please
update me on Java, what it now does and what is necessary? When I wrote that
post about a certain site jumping around I was wondering if it had anything
to do with Java not being updated, but maybe that's not the case anymore.
Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

Yes the accessbridge still exists. Since jdk 7, the accessbridge has been
a part of the regular jdk/jre installation.

On windows after installation, you need to go into ease of access
center -> use the computer without a display, and check the accessbridge
checkbox.

Click ok to exit the dialog and restart jaws.

Now as long as the particular java application is using the jdk associated

part of the regular jdk/jre installation.

On windows after installation, you need to go into ease of access center -> use
the computer without a display, and check the accessbridge checkbox.

Click ok to exit the dialog and restart jaws.

Now as long as the particular java application is using the jdk associated with
the accessbridge or any other jdk from 7.0 or later, things should work.

[JAWS-Users] java update and yahoo

2015-10-25 Thread Lenny McHugh
This really annoyed me, there was a java update that I installed. During the
process I thought I unchecked to add the yahoo search. When the update was
complete, not only was the yahoo search installed the first start page was
replaced with a yahoo.com page.
I had to locate and remove the yahoo search and in internet options delete
the first link and replace it with the weather page that I use.
So make sure that the install yahoo search is unchecked, or you will lose
your start up page.

Re: [JAWS-Users] java feature

2015-02-18 Thread Steve
Folks,

Unless you need this, it is extremely unwise to use it. It is a big-time
security risk. I haven't used nor seen a need for this in several years.

Don't get Java Run-time fron Sun Systems confused with the Adobe Java Flash
plug-in, which is completely different.

You may need Adobe Flash for some websites and to play certain content.
Even there, though, you can often enable html5 in your browser and avoid the
need to use Adobe Flash. Adobe Flash often has been getting updates on a
weekly basis because of security flaws as well. So, only enable it for
those websites where it is necessary.

My .02¢

Steve

If you are running Windows 7 try the following:

Press the Start Menu key
Type access and when you are on the Ease of Access Centre press the enter
key
Press the Tab key until you land on Use the Computer without a Display link
and press the enter key
Press the Tab key until you get to the Java Access Bridge check box.

The status of that check box will let you know if JAB is enabled or not.

Hi Tim.

The Java Access Bridge is included in the Java installation, but you must
activate it manually.
Go to the User Account control, windows-key+u and use the button Use the
computer without a screen, and check the last checkbox before the ok
button, and press ok.
Close the UAC window, and probably you must restart your computer before it
work's.

I have an old Access Bridge installation file. Should I just install that

Hate that user account control, every time it seems to want to hide after
it puts of a message and I have been making or adding programs for the past
weeks and I am afraid to turn it off but why does it default to no, then
give me two places where Jaws says nothing at all and then let me get to the
yes button. I nearly went in and turned it completely off today but not
quite that brave, still it is annoying especially since it defaults to no
instead of yes. There it goes again.

Hi Hans,

Your instructions were great! I then found a Java web page dedicated to
Access Bridge. After reading what Access Bridge does, I wonder how I
survived without it all this time. I find it most strange that JAWS does
not make an automated check, and if Access Bridge is not activated, JAWS
does that itself or at least notifies the user.

Thanks very much!

[JAWS-Users] JAVA ACCESS Bridge checked by JAWS

2015-01-14 Thread East, Robin
Hi Folks,
When starting one's PC something interesting has started to be noticeable.
For a fraction of a second at the top left of the screen like a dos screen
background is black text is white a message appears and it reads: java Access
Bridge is Enabled.

Now it does not speak this but it is in white text with a black background. A
sighted person has alerted me to this and that it does not appear with other
versions of JAWS.
So it appears that JAWS 16 checks to see if the JAVA Access Bridge is
available and initializes it. This does not seem to appear in earlier versions
of JAWS and has only appeared since JAWS 16 was installed. With earlier
versions of JAWS this has not been noticed. My assumption is this is from JAWS.
Am I correct or does someone have another theory?

Thank you
Robin East

Agreed. However, this is the first time we have noticed that JAWS appears to
check to see if it is enabled...Is this what is occurring? If it is and if it
is not enabled it would be nice to get some messageing that JAVA access Bridge
needs to be installed.

Java Access Bridge is an application that allows Java to interface with
JAWS. If you check the SF Website, where it tells you about additional
programs and special instructions, Java Access Bridge is there. I see it
used on my job for training where there are on line classes that have
videos.

To uninstall nova if you are using a windows 7 or 8 computer. First go to

If you want to install a program, the easiest way to proceed is in the
search window (Win 7 has the window at the top of the start menu, not
sure where you'll find it on Win8). Type uninstall and the name of the
program and you should arrive at the uninstall feature.

java update. I go to my start menu and select the check for updates on my java
control panel and jaws is silent after I select the button. does the java
control panel play well with jaws?
I go to java.com on the internet and java doesn’t prompt me to update so why am
I getting the user control at startup?

Hi Kevin,
It is probably because it is loading at startup,
you should see if you can disable it in the Java Control Panel, or the
System Configuration Utility (msconfig)
You shouldn't need it unless websites you transact with require it.

After installing Java, go to personalized settings.

Many web sites do not work properly unless you have JAVA installed. You
don't have to use it as a browser, but you need JAVA on your machine as
many modern websites use it and so that you can take advantage of their
features.

I beg to differ on the safety of Java. Google it, lots of issues with
Oracle Java. Unless you have a definite need for using it, don't. If you
do need it, only use that browser for when you need to use a site that
requires Java; otherwise, you should use a different browser.

[JAWS-Users] JAVA Access Bridge

2012-12-21 Thread Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)
Dear all,

I need to install the JAVA Access bridge on my Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit
system, is anyone able to help please?
I have downloaded and extracted the package from the web site with no problems,
it is just confusing as to which files you need to copy where. There is no
installer, you just have to copy files from the extracted package to the
c:\Program files\JAVA\JRE71 folder.

Any help much appreciated.

Steve.

Steve,
If you have java installed, press windows u. then tab to where it says use a
computer without a display. Press enter. You should see a checkbox that
says, enable access bridge. Check it and press ok. After all that is done,
restart your computer and it should be setup. Make sure you have a current
version of java before attempting this.

Try insert+f11 to get to the system tray. If there is an update, you
should be able to get to something that says java update click to
install or something similar. Hit enter and you'll get a menu that has
an install option. Hit enter on that and it should allow you to install
the update. Now if you went to java.com and downloaded it, that should

Re: [JAWS-Users] java update

2012-11-26 Thread Hans Pauli Sundstein

Hi Shane.

On Windows 7, Java update dos'nt appear in the systemtray automatically.

You must go to the progressbar and startmenu, and select the configure
button, and set the compobox for Java updates to Show icon and message and
hit ok, and than you will find the Java update in the system tray.

Be aware of, that only the 32 bit Java automatically is updated, if you're
running a 64 bit system, and use's the 64 bit browser, than you must
manually update the 64 bit version of Java, by going to the www.java.com
through the 64 bit browser, and download the update, and install it offline.

Good luck.

Hans Pauli.

Thanks for your response. The truth is that I don't know what Java is

I can't speak for anyone else but the latest version of Java seems to
work better than previous versions. Before, with update 6 series, the
tree views under the advanced settings for Java did not work. They
still aren't perfect, but with update 7, it read the choices in that
tree. I don't know what version of Jaws or Windows you are using, but
I've got both xp and windows 7, both running Jaws 13.0 latest build.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Java and Access Bridge

2012-11-15 Thread Hans Pauli Sundstein

Hi.

If you're running Java 7.06 or later, ... newest update is 7.09, Java Access
Bridge v. 2.0.3 is included.

Install e.g. both the 64 bit and the 32 bit version of Java, and than press
Windows-key+u and tab to the button: Use the computer without a screen and
press enter.
Tab to the checkbox Enable Java Access Bridge and press spacebar, and at
last tab to the ok button and press enter.
Close the open window you have left, and restart either Jaws or your
computer.

Now you should could use programs and homepages that uses Java, and where
Java Access Bridge is necessary.

Hans Pauli.

Geno,

If you read the README.txt that is in the group of files when you unpack
the zip file it will have a URL for where to go to find the installation
instructions.Actually, it sends you to a page, you should search on
access, then click on that link. I've done that and here is the link to
the page that actually gives the installation instructions.
