Thanks. I finally found out how to remove the tables and keep the text. If
you want the information, for future reference, here it is:

1. When the document is open, make sure you are in the table.
2. Select the first word in the table, then press alt to activate the
ribbon.
*And the shortcut is
Alt J, L, and then V
Don't need 4. Press Shift Tab until you get to the "Convert To Text" button.
Press Spacebar.
5. Arrow down to "Separate by commas", then tab twice to get to "Okay".

Viola.
Thanks for the assist.

Hi Jerry,

Okay a couple of suggestions but, I don't know how well either will work.
1. With the document open open your context menu with applications key or
shift + F10, and turn off the detect table settings.
2. With the document open, open quick settings with the keystroke, Jaws key
+ V, and turn off the detect table settings.
3. Copy and paste the whole Word document into a text file. This will
remove all formatting, then you can copy & paste the file back into a new
Word document.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers.

Jerry, on your centered heading question, one way would be to press JAWS
key+z to bring up "quick keys." Press h for "heading" to reach each heading
in the document, then press the JAWS key+z toggle to get out of quick
keys."
One way to determine if a heading is centered is to press alt+delete at the
beginning of the line to see if it is farther in than your margin.
A less safe way is to press control+e and note what JAWS reports. Control+e
toggles between center text and left-align. The risk here is that you might
affect the format of more parts of the document, such as the text
immediately following. But if JAWS reports that text is now left-aligned, it
means it was centered, so press control+e again to re-center it.
It's possible MS word's control+f find command is able to locate centered
text, but I find that part of the find command way too complicated to work
with.

Interesting, and very strange. I think I noticed this as well, but I was
also definitely having problems with the keyboard, and I don't recall if a
new JAWS instance solved it; that is, it may have done so, and I just wrote
off any inconsistency as being the result of my crapped keyboard.

As for centered headings -- you can use the headings list (jaws key + f6) to
navigate through headings. However, if someone has just used the "centre
text" command it will not show up as a heading. In that case, there might be
a JAWS speech scheme you can use to help you find out automatically if such
text is designated as 'centred", but I'm not sure. If you place your cursor
over text and press insert-f, JAWS should tell you if it is centred,
justified, left-or-right aligned, etc.

Hi,
Is your spell checker set to automatically check spelling before sending
emails? If you have this turned on in Outlook 2007 as this is an issue in
Outlook 2010.
When you have this turn on and make a spelling error in Outlook 2010 it
crashes Outlook 2010 which I assume might be what is happening in Outlook
2007.

I am having a problem with the spell checker crashing in MS word 7, using
windows 7 and Jaws 18. I have never had this problem until recently. As
nothing has changed on my computer except Jaws 18 updates and Windows
updates I think one of these must be the culprit. The spell checker in
Windows Live Mail is not affected. Anyone else having this problem, Thanks,

Hello Adrian, I tried each of the choices that you listed below and none of
them worked. If I go into Review and tab to Thesaurus and hit enter or
spacebar it closes and takes me back to the document. I just tried alt-r and r
and it closed the menu. Shift F7 did nothing at all. It sounds like there is
something else going on here. I used the Thesaurus a couple of weeks ago and
it did bring up synonyms. This may mean a call to Microsoft support because I
have no more hair to pull out. Great suggestions but...

It might help to clarify something, at least to the extent I understand it.
When you press the application key or right mouse button then y, a list of
synonyms appears that you can go through with the down arrow. At the bottom of
that list is the word "thesaurus," which points the way to a bigger source of
thesaurus entries. I haven't mastered this second option, but it leads to a
combo box with Bing, English, Spanish and other options. You can also get to
this thesaurus option by pressing alt-r, then r, or by pressing shift-F7. I do
know that shift-F7 works in Word 2007 because I have a note about it going back
to that version. However, neither of these last two options brings up the
automatic synonyms list that you get with the first (applications/right mouse
key) option.

Hi,
I have Word 2007 at work but in Spanish, so as Synonyms word in Spanish has no

English. Moreover, in the Review tab in English Microsoft uses the term
“thesaurus”, which is not also used in Spanish.
I'll try to check the Microsoft Language Portal, but full UI translations
requires an MSDN subscription which is not free, and searching with the &

Subject: [JAWS-Users] MS Word Review

Hello all-

I am using Windows 7 64bit with MS Word 2007. I have a word in the document
that I would like a definition or synonym for. I highlighted the word,
Opened the Review menu and tabbed to the Thesaurus since I could not find a
Definition button. I pressed spacebar on the Thesaurus and it throws me
back into the document instead of giving me a synonym. How can I get the
Thesaurus to work?

Thanks in advance,

Wayne

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word Review

2017-07-01 Thread Adrian Spratt
As you arrow down through the list of synonyms that you get by pressing the
applications key, then y, you land on "Thesaurus..." Here are instructions
posted by a person named Dondi for what to do from here. I admit I can't get
this to work, but Dondi did, so it must be possible.

This works in Word 2010 and JAWS 13.0.718.
Press F6 until you get to research edit and you hear the word that you selected
in your document.
Tab down once to the start searching button and press space bar.
You will hear thesaurus English .
Tab down once, you should hear thesaurus English outline expanded.
Arrow down through the list of words.
When you find one you want press shift+F10 and select insert and press enter.
Press escape and you will return to your document with the new word pasted in
as a replacement.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word Page Number Inquiry

2017-06-22 Thread Mike B.
Hi Jerry,

If you press, Insert / Jaws + Page Down, this keystroke should give you the
information you want, if your status bar is configured to do so. Below are
steps on how to customize your status bar.

To show number of lines, line number, or many other options in the status
bar in Word try the following:
1. Press F6 until Status bar is highlighted. Or, until you hear Jaws
report, Status Toolbar. It should be the 1st or 2nd press of the F6 key.
2. Press Shift + F10 to show options. This keystroke must be used because a
right mouse click or pressing the application key will not.
3. Down arrow through the available options, and when you have found line
count or something else of interest press the spacebar to check or uncheck
the item.
4. when done making modifications simply press AltF4 or escape key.
5. Review your status line to insure the settings have been properly
modified.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Wayne,

I'm way behind, so this may have been answered later. But the Spellchecker
in Word 2016 works well. If you don't want grammar to be checked, press T
then O and find the Proofing tab. You can pick and choose what you want
checked.

Hi Wayne.
I use Office 2016 constantly. I can make several suggestions as regards the
Spell check function.

1. The Alt combinations no longer function. Depending on the current
status, the single letter will often perform the function desired. However,
Word 2016 provides additional support which can be difficult to operate
until you understand it.

2. In the Default setting, Word 2016 checks both the spelling and the
context. If the system finds a phrase which doesn't match the pre-approved
parameters, it will stop and provide an explanation. It's that explanation
which causes the system to act differently. In a sense, it will not only
suggest a different sentence structure but will explain why this change is
necessary. To get out of that dialog, just press the Escape key.

3. The safest and easiest way to navigate Word 2016's Grammar and Spelling
checks is by tabbing. Here's an example.
If a word is found which appears to be misspelled, Word 2016 will give you a
list of possible alternatives. To select the one you want, just move down
the list and press Enter to confirm the choice. In some cases, it may still
be necessary to move to the "Change" button and press enter there as well.

4. it is possible to remove the Grammar check and simply have the system
check for spelling errors, but it isn't easy. In fact, I haven't found the
correct ribbon which contains that option.

5. Word 2016, like its predecessors, will alert you of differences in
spacing. That too comes up as an announcement. All you have to do is
locate and engage the Change button.

6. This thing is punctuation conscious. Again, the explanation message
shows up and it tells you why the punctuation should be changed. I don't
always agree with the justification so I will Escape out of the message,
move to Ignore and press enter to confirm my choice.

I hope that this helps you a bit. The dictionary in Word 2016 is much more
massive than anything Microsoft has created before. It is more than five
times the size of the file in Word 2007.

Hi Wayne, I'm no master of it, but it seems to work much like previous
versions.

You start it with F7, if the suggested replacement doesn't sound right,
press Tab and arrow down through the choices. Now, here's something that is
confusing, most of the time, you can still use the Alt C, to make the
change, or Alt I to Ignore, but sometimes, it tells me to just use the
letter, meaning just use the C or I.

I have absolutely no idea why this is. I just try my usual command and if it
tells me to do the changes without the ALT key, I just go with the flow.

Good luck,

Vicky Vaughan

that is set up as a textbook i.e., each heading/subheading is indented? I
hope this make sense (so much work, so little coffee). Thanks much

Mike B mentioned alt-delete, which states focus location in measurement terms,

Note that once you change your search settings, the system goes through what

Move your cursor to the sentence you want to check and type Insert+F.

If this isn't what you're looking for, could you explain more clearly what
problem you're trying to solve? JAWS has the ability to detect likely
formatting errors in a document, for example.

Hi Adrian,

In Word you can replace vertical tabs using the Find and Replace dialog box.
After using CTRL with h to launch the dialog box use ^11 in the Find What
edit control. The caret is shift with 6. If you want to replace the
vertical tab with a paragraph mark the use ^13 in the Replace With field.
Using ^32 in the Replace With field will replace the vertical tab with a
space.

Take care.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word text moving on its own

The times I most often encounter this problem are when I've copied text from
other sources into a document. Word inserts code that I can't always isolate
and identify. For example, I may have what looks like a two-return break,
but when I delete what I assume is one of the return characters, it remains
a two-line break. Sometimes I figure out that the culprit is the character
called a vertical tab. I wish I could search for that character and replace
it, but I haven't worked out how to, despite having done some online
research.

In any event, once an errant code enters a document, it can cause JAWS to
behave unpredictably. I'm in the habit now of checking each time I start
inserting text into the middle of a document.

Sometimes I refresh the screen with JAWS key+escape. I'm not sure if that
solves the problem, but I do think the action causes JAWS to pause and take
a breather. JAWS does have a tendency to get hyperactive.

Wayne,

I'm afraid this is not very helpful, but I know exactly what you are talking
about because it has happened to me too and not just in Word. I've had the
same thing happen in Outlook. I'll be typing along then when I go back to
proof what I've written, I sometimes find portions of my text in a
completely different paragraph or line from where I intended.

I haven't been able to figure out any pattern regarding when this occurs
making it sort of random which is why I have never mentioned it on the list.
I had a half-baked theory that I was inadvertently hitting some key on my
Braille display that was causing the cursor to jump, but I just don't know.
Are you using a Braille display when this text jumping happens to you?

If anyone else has seen this behavior, I'd like to hear about your
experience. Maybe we can figure out what's going on and report it to FS or
whatever the heck they're calling themselves these days.

Thanks, Brian. I look forward to using this symbol the next time I suspect
vertical tabs are lurking in my document. FYI, for the paragraph sign, I use
^p, which is a little easier to remember. I also use the spacebar to for the
space character, which is even easier! But again, thank you so much for the
annoying vertical tab solution.

Hi Adrian,

In Word you can replace vertical tabs using the Find and Replace dialog box.
After using CTRL with h to launch the dialog box use ^11 in the Find What edit
control. The caret is shift with 6. If you want to replace the vertical tab
with a paragraph mark the use ^13 in the Replace With field.
Using ^32 in the Replace With field will replace the vertical tab with a space.

Take care.

The times I most often encounter this problem are when I've copied text from
other sources into a document. Word inserts code that I can't always isolate
and identify. For example, I may have what looks like a two-return break, but
when I delete what I assume is one of the return characters, it remains a
two-line break. Sometimes I figure out that the culprit is the character called
a vertical tab. I wish I could search for that character and replace it, but I
haven't worked out how to, despite having done some online research.

In any event, once an errant code enters a document, it can cause JAWS to
behave unpredictably. I'm in the habit now of checking each time I start
inserting text into the middle of a document.

Sometimes I refresh the screen with JAWS key+escape. I'm not sure if that

2016-07-22 Thread Annette Carr
I do not use a braille display and it does happen randomly. Like you I
figured I accidently hit a key combination, but I really can't imagine how.
However, like I said in my previous post, turning off the mouse pad and
stick have reduced the problem significantly. I use laptops exclusively at
home and at work, and do not use external keyboards. I use JAWS in the
desktop keyboard mode. No numpad, I've learned to do finger gymnastics.

In the past 10 years, I've had this problem on several computers. Figuring

Hi Wayne,
Are you working on this document on a desktop or laptop? Does this behavior
happen in other places besides word? If this document is being composed on a
desktop computer and a mouse is connected, I would try removing the mouse
temporarily to see if this behavior subsides or place it in a position where
it will not be touched.
If this document is being composed on a laptop one item which comes to mind
is that perhaps you are inadvertently touching the touch pad?
This is usally down near the bottom of the keyboard and will cause the
position of the cursor to move. Most laptops have an option that allows for
the touch pad to be disabled.
I hope this helps

I don't know the cause, but I know one cause for this behavior. I've seen it
many times. It happens on laptops when the touchpad has not been disabled.
It's very easy to brush against the touchpad with the palm of your hand when
typing. That makes the cursor jump around. The user has no idea this is
happening. Let me be clear, I don't think this is the only cause of this
behavior, but it is definitely one cause. I've seen it more times than I can
count.

Agreed, the paste method makes all the difference. I was just posing one
example of how inserting text from another source can cause JAWS to read
erratically.

JAWS 17, Win7, no braille display.

[JAWS-Users] MS Word text moving on its own

2016-07-20 Thread wayne smith
I need some of you big brains! I have an MS Word 2007 doc that is about 250
pages long. At some points when I write the text sometimes it appears in
the middle of a different paragraph from the one I am working on. This
happens often but it seems to be inconsistent. I am using JAWS 15. Any
thoughts would be welcome.

Try the old Office 2003 shortcut which is alt f, then u. That should open
the dialog for you.

Hello Tom,

1. Press Alt followed by P followed by S followed by P to open the page
layout dialog box.
2. Hold down CTRL key and while holding it down press tab key repeatedly
until you move to the layout page tab.
3. Use Alt with V to move to the vertical alignment list.
4. Use down arrow key to the appropriate choice and press enter key to set
it.
5. You can then tab to a box where you can specify whether your choice is
for the whole document, from the point in the document with focus forward or
to a section if you are using sections. Just use down arrow in the list.
6. Tab to OK and use spacebar.

Take care.

Tom,

Alt + P takes you to the Page Layout tab, then you can tab down until you
find the alignment tab. By the way, when you were asking about resizing a
cell in an Excel worksheet, did you try the wrap text feature? This will let
you type a long line of text into a cell, and retain the cell width by
continuously adding lines to the texgt in the cell. This does, however,
increase the height of the cell. This feature is found on the Home tab below
all of the alignment stuff.

[JAWS-Users] MS Word 2013, documents in order upside down

2015-08-17 Thread Neil Towery
Hello Gang:

Using JAWS 16 and MS Word 2013.

While in a document, I do control o and shift tab twice to get to the list
of documents. But, they are upside down, in that, documents beginning with
the letter Z would be at the top of the list. Those beginning with the
letter A are at the bottome of the list, as I arrow down.

How do I reverse the order? I want the A things to be at the top and the Z
things at the bottom.

I am a bit slow, so, I am looking for easy specific instructions. Thanks
a bunch, in advance.

Hi

I’m wondering if there’s any way of having Jaws tell you how much of a page
of a word document has text and how much is empty. I’ve used empty lines
until I get to a new page to get some idea of this but would like to know if
there’s a way to know how many lines of text fit on one page if you’re using
a particular formatting.

Hello,

In Word (at least in 2013 and I think in Word 2010) by default heading 1
style through heading 9 style are used. You can use Alt with Shift and
right or left arrow key to move between the different headings. You can
turn on Outline view by pressing Alt followed by W followed by U. In this
view as you use Alt with Shift and right or left arrow keys you are setting
your level. Use Alt+delete key to find out the cursor position after using
those keystrokes if you want to confirm that the levels are being used
correctly. You will also get an Outline tab on the ribbon with options that
can be used.

In list styles such as numbered lists what is used for the different levels
depends on the type of numbering you choose. When you press enter key after
typing in a number the next line will have the next sequential number. If
you use tab on that line the number might be changed to a letter. Tab again
and you might have a roman numeral. Use backspace and you move back a level
at a time. What you get when you tab or shift+tab on new lines in a
numbered list depends on the type of numbered list you are using.

Take care.

Hi Lenny,

Here's something you can try to make navigating the Office 2010 ribbons a
little easier but, make sure the virtual ribbons option is unchecked in
Word's Jaws options, Insert + V.

To navigate ribbons more efficiently the ribbons need to be maximized. The
keystroke is, control + F1. This keystroke is a toggle so, this keystroke
will maximize minimize. To check if the ribbons are minimized / maximized
do the following:
1. Press the, Alt key, to open the ribbons.
2. Open the context menu with either the application key or, shift + F10.
3. Arrow up or down to the, Minimize, option. If, Minimize, is checked, the
ribbons are minimized Pressing, enter, on this checkbox, will uncheck it
close the context menu your menues will now be maximized.

HTH
Take care.

Well, I learned my lesson about using other programs to change views. When I
first installed office 2010 a few years ago there was a program that changed
the ribbons to work like word 2003. I can find no way to reverse it. I was
on with a Microsoft tech for about 3 hours and she could not fix it. She is
escalating the problem. She located the program and uninstalled it. It did
not correct the problem. did a repair on office 2010 with same unfavorable
results. And as I did last night uninstalled office 2010 and re installed
it and the problem is still there. She did find a work around for me. To do
an insert in word I can use alt N instead of alt I. She will be getting back
to me in 48 to 72 hours. I will never again install something that changes
the way a program works.
