Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings
Hi Andy, A long time ago it was necessary to uncheck this item in order to force Firefox to don't use Direct3D even on Windows Vista and newer, which prevented to use JAWS cursor. It was not related to JAWS Virtual PC Cursor support. Problems with Firefox 57 and newer with JAWS are not related to hardware acceleration, but to the fact by default Firefox 57 and newer use a different process for each tab, and unlike Chrome the infrastructure for transferring content of different processes to asistive technologies is not as accurate. Regarding hardware acceleration, it unloads a bit the CPU by processing media content like videos and games in the GPU (the graphics card or video adapter) instead of the CPU or processor. This is especially convenient on slow CPUs like the ones of low end netbook computers or some older ones, but perhaps more power consumming and not as useful on more powerful CPUs. Anyway, I always prefer to turn this on in order to leave CPU free for most other programs which don't specifically support GPU processing. Hope it helps! 2018-05-29 16:42 GMT-03:00 Andy Baracco : > There was a time when we were told to uncheck those items, but I do not > know if this still holds true. > > Andy > > - Original Message - From: "Cristóbal" > To: > Sent: Tuesday, May 29, 2018 9:29 AM > Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings > > > Hello list, > > I was poking around Firefox after reupgrading to V 60.0.1 and going through > the various settings to make sure everything is how I want it and came > across the below: > > Use hardware acceleration when available Alt+Shift+r > > Use autoscrolling Alt+Shift+a > > Use smooth scrolling Alt+Shift+m > > So, since I rarely ever deal with these particular settings, I forgot what > is advised. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about sounds.
Sounds like either a driver issue or that something is slowing down the computer to the point where digital playback is being interfered with. The latter does happen on my new-ish machine running Windows 10 from time to time. It's usually something like a faulty script running in the web browser causing a massive system slowdown. You should try and see if this happens at all without any programme windows open. Definitely have any IT people in the family have a look. There might be some invasive background processes running that need to be killed. Are your sound drivers up to date? You should be able to check this in "control panel", "manage sound devices". Look for the properties button, probably under the "general" tab. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Sharon S Sent: February 4, 2018 10:14 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] question about sounds. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about Teamviewer and JAWS
It works, sure. However, you may not get a lot of feedback, depending on how the remote person is operating. If they are sighted and moving the mouse around and using keyboard shortcuts the way most service desk types do, probably don't expect JAWS to say much. But yes, team viewer itself has an extremely minimal, streamlined interface that is perfectly accessible. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Arianna Calesso Sent: January 11, 2018 9:18 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question about Teamviewer and JAWS Does Teamviewer work with JAWS for remote assistance? Hi Rick, I don’t have my scanner connected to this new PC yet, nor do I have the pearl camera, although since it’s on sale for half off right now, I was thinking about it. Wow...that seems odd. I don't mean to be contradictory, but this sort of thing seems hard to argue with: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askcore/2010/02/18/understanding-the-2-tb-limit-in-windows-storage/ Are you sure you are able to access all of those drives? I have two 2 TB external drives myself. I know Windows 10 for instance can handle larger drives if you format them in the new post-ntfs filesystem. I had these same 2TB drives on my XP machine, which I owned until this spring, but never thought to try bigger because of the reasons above. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dave...Oregonian Sent: October 16, 2017 9:25 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] question about large external hard drives Yes, now I will insert a caveat that these are running on an XP operating system at 32 bits. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about windows overlay
Hello I just installed the second beta of jaws 2018 and I didn't have to remove anything. I put my computer to sleep and when I re started it I noticed I did not get the over lay 0 window. I am hoping they finally fixed this annoying problem at last so we will wait and see. I downloaded the jaws 2018 file from the downloads page and then installed it that way but jaws did not restart on its own, I had to use the short cut key to re start it the first time after installing it but after that it seams to be acting normally. -Original Message- From: Maria Campbell Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2017 11:57 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about windows overlay I also had the overlay window bit in JAWS 18, but had no trouble installing JAWS 2018. Well...to be fair, it is a beta. I've never installed it but I understand how beta testing works. What you're trying is not really the full product as it will be, and you might have to conduct extra steps, uinstalations etc to get things working stably. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Maria Campbell Sent: October 5, 2017 11:57 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about windows overlay I also had the overlay window bit in JAWS 18, but had no trouble installing JAWS 2018. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about windows overlay
If someone has explained this, please re send me the e-mail. I've noticed that the overlay is on at times when I'm unable to alt tab through the taskbar to the different programs even when they are all open. Does that have something to do with that? Re: [JAWS-Users] question is there a way to use the real speek voices with jaws and to be able to see a list of each voice and switch between them to choose the one you like?
You should see the voices in the "voice adjustment" dialogue, under "person", if you have the realspeak selected in the menu you described. From there, you can create a voice profile with the voice of your choosing. There aren't any voice profiles there until you create them. Did you run the executable to install the voices you downloaded? Unless you downloaded the compact voice pack (which I think was still a thing in Realspeak), you'll have to run each .msc file individually to install the voice data. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of mi...@eastlink.ca Sent: September 30, 2017 4:19 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] question is there a way to use the real speek voices with jaws and to be able to see a list of each voice and switch between them to choose the one you like? Re: [JAWS-Users] question about office 2016 and demo mode
Hi. Even when I know newer products well, I think that Office 2000 is the better Office old versions. Even when new versions have online help and tool tips on each control, you'll not find anything as convenient as the What's this? feature which provided help on each menu item and dialog control. Regarding your trial, you'll need to activate it. Depending on your computer's manufacturer and model, the required product key may have came in a Certificate of Autenticity (CoA), a label on the machine or in the user manual. Alternatively, you might need to register your machine with the corresponding manufacturer utility for that, and then sign in into Office with the e-mail account you have used for registering. Hope it helps at least a bit. 2017-07-02 20:26 GMT-03:00 Jared Rimer: > Hi all, > > I have been out of commission for the past while and will catch up. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about office 2016 and demo mode
On my new laptop, Microsoft Office programs offered options allowing me to buy or activate a license as soon as they were started. If this doesn't work for you, try visiting https://products.office.com/ where you can buy an Office 365 subscription. Be sure to choose a plan that includes the desktop office programs. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jared Rimer Sent: Sunday, July 2, 2017 7:27 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] question about office 2016 and demo mode Hi all, I have been out of commission for the past while and will catch up. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question regarding the system tray with jaws
Hi Russ, To get to the Taskbar properties to hide / show system tray icons try the following: 1. Press, Windows Key + T, to go to the Taskbar. 2. Now, press, Alt + Enter, to open the Taskbar Properties. 3. Tab to the, Notification Area Customize, button & press the spacebar to open. 4. Now you can tab to all the system tray icons, & use the up / down arrow keys to choose what you want to do with each icon. Your 3 choices are Show icon in notifications, Only show notifications, & Hide icon in notifications. If you tab through, right before the Okay button is the checkbox to, Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar, option. 5. If you make any changes tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay, again & press enter to save & close. Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool. Well, it certainly does not seem to be a level playing field when it comes to web access, but regardless of any outrage we might feel, no one has ever said that life is fair. We all need to use whatever resources we have to attain our goal -- if that means picking up the phone when a web page does not work, at least we make the purchase. Stamping our foot firmly does not achieve that result. Re: [JAWS-Users] question about shopping
Judy, First use Insert+F5 to bring up a list of the controls, and arrow to that button. Press enter. Without using any tab or arrow keys, route JAWS to cursor. Press the Numpad Slash key to emulate a left mouse click. If that doesn't work, then follow all the steps above but instead of using the numpad slash button, use an actual mouse or touchpad to click on its left button. Since I don't have Word 2010 on this computer, I can't check the correct name, but I hope those using Word 2010 know what I am referring to. I will be using Word primarily for manuscript writing, so I will be doing a great deal of editing but I will also need to know how it looks in print layout to a sighted person. It is easy enough to switch back and forth, so I am wondering which way is the best for actual composition and editing considering the documents are manuscripts. I will be using either JAWS 14 or JAWS 18. If people have advice as to which version of JAWS works best with Word 2010, please feel free to let me know. I realize that this may be a matter of personal opinion, but I am open to suggestions and reasons for those opinions, so any help would be appreciated. If taking this off-list is better, feel free to e-mail me privately. Thank you. Re: [JAWS-Users] question regarding Verizon email service
I just spoke with a lady from Verizon since I have phone and internet from them. She did say that Verizon will no longer be handling email and that AOL will be doing so. She said it was an automatic change and I didn't need to change my email address so I could keep nightfur...@verizon.net. I asked if I could still send from this email address and also receive emails from others if they use that email address and she said yes. She asked me if I received an email from Verizon stating the changes and I said no. She said they are sending them out to everyone so I should eventually get one. She also said if I sign into the webmail that a pop-up should come up and I would need to fill out a form to make the changes. I went to my webmail and no pop-up and I searched the page for something to click on to make changes but there was nothing at all so I'm not sure what to do but wait for an email because I think there are to be steps to do in the email to make changes. I'm not sure if it is automatic why to fill out a form and also I'm receiving emails from companies I subscribe to stating if you are a Verizon email user to change your email address because if automatic why change? Oh and she said if you use Verizon internet but change your email to a gmail account and I think yahoo, she said you could lose emails. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows
I'm just lost here... I have an inaccessible pdf on my computer. How do I use the knfb app on my windows 10 machine to read it? I launch the program, click file explorer, navigate to the pdf file, spacebar on open, then there is a confirm button, but I don't know what that is referring too? If you or someone can supply steps that would be great. I'm still looking for my camera on my comp to try that route, but for now, I will see about using knfb for docs on my machine. Thank you for any responses. You can also save the OCR results into an alternative format. Since it works with scanners and cameras, and if you want to review the results in more detail than just having KNFBReader read everything back to you in one stream, you can save the OCR results on to your computer. The Jaws OCR function is ok for a quick check of things, but KNFBReader gives a more detailed and accurate scan. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2017 12:09 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows Sorry to belabor this, and also to be catching up on messages in reverse chronological order, but for inaccessible documents, you have JAWS' built-in OCR feature. Even if you don't it still might scan ok. Then you have to push the take picture button then it will come of reading for you. Of course you have to make sure the printed side of the paper is towards the camera lens. You also have to have a camera. If you do not have a camera you can use a flatbed scanner. Then you just put the paper on the scanner and open up the KNFB app and tab until you hear scan image or do a ctrl + T to start the scan. It sounds like these are the kind of links that JAWS verbalizes as something like, "Same page link." They can be confusing. One method that often works in such cases is to note the wording in the link, then search for some or all of that search string to take you to the relevant part of the page. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mr. Ed Sent: Friday, March 10, 2017 11:49 AM To: JAWS-Users-List 2 Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question on an IE website Hi All, When I go to a website on ESPN I can magnify the page so I can see it. I do not open the message. . Use Alt+F to open the File menu and down arrow to save attachments. . A dialog box opens and I tab to OK and press Enter. This dialog box might only come up when I am saving multiple attachments from the same message all at once. . I use Shift+Tab 2 or 3 times to get to my folder list . . I use the up and down arrows to find the folder I want to put the attachment into, and press enter. . Tab to Save and press enter. Am I missing a step? How do I confirm that I have opened the folder where I want to put the attachments before I activate the save button? Thanks, Annette From: David Hello in Outlook2010, Save attachments, 1, enter on the message which contains the attached file. 2, now shift+tab one time, you will see/hear the attachment Right arrow to highlight. 3, press the applications key, up arrow and enter on either Save all attachments or save as. Probably easier to enter on save as. Now you will see the attachment name, Shift+tab 2 times, Your in a list of document folder, Arrow to your choice of folder, Press enter. Now tab to the save button. Let me no if this helps. David From: Brian Lee Hello Annette, Here is another method you might consider trying. After using the OK button in the first dialog box, use Alt with D to move to the address bar. Use tab three times to the tree view of folders. Expand the folders in the tree view using right arrow key or collapse them using left arrow key. Browse the tree structure until the folder you want to save the attachments in is selected. If it can be expanded press right arrow key. Press enter key to make sure it is selected. Use Alt+S to save the file instead of tabbing to the save button. Take care. Brian Lee From: Bissett, Tom When the save dialogue comes up you only need to shift tab once to bring you to the folder/file list. Jaws should say "folder view list view". Here you can arrow up and down to find and press enter on the folder you want then tab to the save button. Regards Tom Bisset Take care. Mike Sent from my iBarstool. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows
The KNFB Windows app has a file explorer function where you can select a file to perform OCR on. Jorge PS- Now, it cost $100, good on 10 pc's. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Kimsan Sent: Thursday, March 09, 2017 1:18 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows My question is how do you use this blasted thing. When I scan, do I place it on the keyboard? Or every time I am scanning I need to have my scanner connected to it so I would need to place the paper on the tray of the scanner?? It's 19.99 much easier on the phone vs the comp. lol Respectfully, Kimsan Song kimsans...@icloud.com -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mr. Ed Sent: Tuesday, March 7, 2017 7:22 AM To: JAWS-Users-List 2 <JAWS-Users-List@jaws-users.com> Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows Hi Group, Does anyone know how to make the KNFB app for windows read line by line? All I have been able to figure out is how to stop the reading and start it again using ctrl + P. If anyone has a list of short cut keys that would be helpful too. I have looked online but have not found anything.
