Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on Firefox 60.0.1 settings

2018-05-29 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Andy,

A long time ago it was necessary to uncheck this item in order to force
Firefox to don't use Direct3D even on Windows Vista and newer, which
prevented to use JAWS cursor. It was not related to JAWS Virtual PC Cursor
support.
Problems with Firefox 57 and newer with JAWS are not related to hardware
acceleration, but to the fact by default Firefox 57 and newer use a
different process for each tab, and unlike Chrome the infrastructure for
transferring content of different processes to asistive technologies is not
as accurate.

Regarding hardware acceleration, it unloads a bit the CPU by processing
media content like videos and games in the GPU (the graphics card or video
adapter) instead of the CPU or processor. This is especially convenient on
slow CPUs like the ones of low end netbook computers or some older ones,
but perhaps more power consumming and not as useful on more powerful CPUs.
Anyway, I always prefer to turn this on in order to leave CPU free for most
other programs which don't specifically support GPU processing.

Hope it helps!

Hello list,

I was poking around Firefox after reupgrading to V 60.0.1 and going through
the various settings to make sure everything is how I want it and came
across the below:

Use hardware acceleration when available Alt+Shift+r

Use autoscrolling Alt+Shift+a

Use smooth scrolling Alt+Shift+m

So, since I rarely ever deal with these particular settings, I forgot what
is advised. Whether to check or uncheck these three options? On the latest
Jaws 2018 May update and it is much better than the first go around with
Firefox 60.

Can anyone give me a refresher and what these three settings actually do?

Thanks,

Cristóbal

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about sounds.

2018-02-04 Thread JM Casey
Sounds like either a driver issue or that something is slowing down the
computer to the point where digital playback is being interfered with. The
latter does happen on my new-ish machine running Windows 10 from time to
time. It's usually something like a faulty script running in the web browser
causing a massive system slowdown. You should try and see if this happens at
all without any programme windows open. Definitely have any IT people in the
family have a look. There might be some invasive background processes
running that need to be killed.

Are your sound drivers up to date? You should be able to check this in
"control panel", "manage sound devices". Look for the properties button,
probably under the "general" tab.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about Teamviewer and JAWS

2018-01-11 Thread JM Casey
It works, sure. However, you may not get a lot of feedback, depending on how
the remote person is operating. If they are sighted and moving the mouse
around and using keyboard shortcuts the way most service desk types do,
probably don't expect JAWS to say much. But yes, team viewer itself has an
extremely minimal, streamlined interface that is perfectly accessible.

I just read the help segment pertaining to convenient ocr. I have just one
question. I wonder if it is possible to save text that has undergone the ocr
process if a pdf file was the source of the original images or if you have
scanned a number of pages using a scanner or the pearl camera. The help
section did say you lose the text that was acquired from an onscreen image
from things like controls or a set up screen for an app once you move to a
different screen. But I was hoping that in other cases, it might be possible
to save the ocred text for later reading or repeated reading rather than
having to ocr it all over again.

I understand that this feature isn’t an Open Book replacement. But it
somehow seems like it should be possible to just save out what you just
spent time ocring.

Hi All,

I have a friend that ask this question on another group. I will post it
below. If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Ed

I installed jaws 2018, and hit the button where it asks if you want to
import your old settings. I did that and most of them were imported.

Now it's putting "block quote" and "block quote end" messages in my web
pages and such. It's also saying stuff like list of one item which is,
truthfully useless and it's been so long since I've gotten this that I don't
remember how to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have been considering getting a 4 terabyte drive or even possibly larger and
I am already aware that if is an internal drive that goes in a case it has to
be formatted as GPT. Conversely I figure if it is already in its’ own case that
it is most likely already formatted.

I was just curious if there was anything else to make note or be aware of is

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about large external hard drives

2017-10-16 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

A couple of years ago, I got a CGate 3 TB drive for my Windows 7 machine. It
came with software from CGate to allow it to use all 3 TB in a single
partition. It worked fine until It recently failed But I had one problem when
I had that drive. Every week or two, my JAWS locking code would change,
requiring me to reauthorize JAWS, even though I made no hardware changes. I
never had that problem before or after I had that drive. I circumvented the
problem by purchasing a JAWS dongle to authorize JAWS.

Wow...that seems odd. I don't mean to be contradictory, but this sort of thing
seems hard to argue with:
https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askcore/2010/02/18/understanding-the-2-tb-limit-in-windows-storage/

Are you sure you are able to access all of those drives?
I have two 2 TB external drives myself. I know Windows 10 for instance can
handle larger drives if you format them in the new post-ntfs filesystem. I had
these same 2TB drives on my XP machine, which I owned until this spring, but
never thought to try bigger because of the reasons above.

Yes, now I will insert a caveat that these are running on an XP operating
system at 32 bits. I hear that access times are affected by this combination,
but I do have full access to the 4 Tb. And these are internal drives connected
using SATA.

Hello I just installed the second beta of jaws 2018 and I didn't have to
remove anything.
I put my computer to sleep and when I re started it I noticed I did not get

I am hoping they finally fixed this annoying problem at last so we will wait
and see.
I downloaded the jaws 2018 file from the downloads page and then installed
it that way but jaws did not restart on its own, I had to use the short cut

seams to be acting

Freedomscientific technician told me that OCR and a couple of other
features has to be uninstalled for my computer to allow the 2018 beta

Well...to be fair, it is a beta. I've never installed it but I understand how
beta testing works. What you're trying is not really the full product as it
will be, and you might have to conduct extra steps, uinstalations etc to get

tries I just couldn't do it that way.  I still wish to find info on
the overlay and will pass it on if I do find it.

The reason that I am trying to turn this feature off is that
Freedomscientific technician told me that OCR and a couple of other
features has to be uninstalled for my computer to allow the 2018 beta
to be installed.  When I go to programs and features jaws tells me
that overlay windows has to first be turned off.  I have not been able
to do this.  I guess I will have to call freedomscientific again for
help.

Hi Fred,

I also have this always on top window on the JAWS Task List.
I am sure this is JAWS-RELATED, because I could check it by pressing
INSERT+Q after switching to this window from the JTL. I think this is
INSERT+for
the Virtual Cursor image on the screen which was introduced a few JAWS
18 updates ago, but Im not sure.

I have had this too ever since installing JAWS 18. It seems harmless and as
said, it's probably related to jAWS itself. Never had any problems installing
updates but I also have not tested the beta. Interesting.

If someone has explained this, please re send me the e-mail. I've noticed that
the overlay is on at times when I'm unable to alt tab through the taskbar to

Re: [JAWS-Users] question is there a way to use the real speek voices with jaws and to be able to see a list of each voice and switch between them to choose the one you like?

2017-09-30 Thread JM Casey
You should see the voices in the "voice adjustment" dialogue, under "person",
if you have the realspeak selected in the menu you described. From there, you
can create a voice profile with the voice of your choosing. There aren't any
voice profiles there until you create them. Did you run the executable to
install the voices you downloaded? Unless you downloaded the compact voice pack
(which I think was still a thing in Realspeak), you'll have to run each .msc
file individually to install the voice data.

I'm having a weird experience wit Amazon. Every time I go into my shopping cart
using the non-accessibility (the regular) site, I can't see anything on the
screen. If I'm using Windoweyes, all I see is a link for the shopping cart; I
don't see any info re my shopping cart. If I'm using JAWS, the screen appears
blank. I'm using Firefox; IE doesn't seem to load for me. Is anyone else having
this problem"

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about office 2016 and demo mode

2017-07-03 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi.
Even when I know newer products well, I think that Office 2000 is the
better Office old versions. Even when new versions have online help and
tool tips on each control, you'll not find anything as convenient as the
What's this? feature which provided help on each menu item and dialog
control.

Regarding your trial, you'll need to activate it. Depending on your
computer's manufacturer and model, the required product key may have came
in a Certificate of Autenticity (CoA), a label on the machine or in the
user manual. Alternatively, you might need to register your machine with
the corresponding manufacturer utility for that, and then sign in into
Office with the e-mail account you have used for registering.

Hope it helps at least a bit.

Hi all,

I have been out of commission for the past while and will catch up. I got
one answer to my questions about 2016 being accessible, and even looked
through the archives for thunderbird help as it wasn't reading right, so
nice job, guys. I searched for thunderbird through google and got what I
needed.

I assumed that I would get a free trial of office which came with this
computer as it came with windows 10 and office 2016. I can read and provide
feedback by E-mail to someone however, I can't write or use the program at
all. A message I found with the mouse indicated that most features are
locked until activated. I thought I would be trying for 30 days then it
would lock. I don't have office 365, I don't have anything
but a new windows 10 PC. So, how can I benefit from a trial if I'm
granted one? I'm inquiring as well on other things to get this purchased as
a subscription for me so I can keep up on the changes.
I've been a long time word 2000 user, and realize I need to learn the newer
products to be competitive. I found it easy to get the word count of an
article i submitted, but I can't use it at all. Thanks for any help.

look in the w e windows enhanced app. it is probibly useing the option to show
all icons even the hidden ones.
if you were to uncheck this option you would only have 2 in the list like jaws.
you probibly have to open the notification sheveron in the systray and unhide
the icons before jaws will see them.

Hi Russ,

To get to the Taskbar properties to hide / show system tray icons try the
following:

1. Press, Windows Key + T, to go to the Taskbar.
2. Now, press, Alt + Enter, to open the Taskbar Properties.
3. Tab to the, Notification Area Customize, button & press the spacebar to
open.
4. Now you can tab to all the system tray icons, & use the up / down arrow
keys to choose what you want to do with each icon. Your 3 choices are Show
icon in notifications, Only show notifications, & Hide icon in
notifications. If you tab through, right before the Okay button is the
checkbox to, Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar, option.
5. If you make any changes tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay,
again & press enter to save & close.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Well, it certainly does not seem to be a level playing field when it comes
to web access, but regardless of any outrage we might feel, no one has ever
said that life is fair. We all need to use whatever resources we have to
attain our goal -- if that means picking up the phone when a web page does
not work, at least we make the purchase. Stamping our foot firmly does not
achieve that result.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about shopping

2017-05-20 Thread Dave ...
Judy,

First use Insert+F5 to bring up a list of the controls, and arrow to that
button.
Press enter.
Without using any tab or arrow keys, route JAWS to cursor.
Press the Numpad Slash key to emulate a left mouse click.

If that doesn't work, then follow all the steps above but instead of using
the numpad slash button, use an actual mouse or touchpad to click on its
left button.

Hi, all, like I was complaining about yesterday, I used Chrom and IE for a
website I wanted to purchase something and I could go through and select
things but the "add to bag" button didn't work in either browser. It is
just maddening. Is there any other way to maybe get the button to work?
Also, is that kind of situation any better for those of you who have later
versions of Jaws? I am using 14. Thanks in advance. Judy & Libby

Hi Judy,
How about downloading and installing the recent version of Jaws
and see if that helps.
You don't have to purchase it, you can run it in demo mode to see if it is
a solution to your problem.

Vicki,

I use print view in MS word 2010 and JAWS 18. I'm not sure why you'd ever
need to choose draft view (you have the correct term). Here's what
CathyAnne Murtha says about draft view in her textbook on Word 2010 for

I am wondering about the advantages and disadvantages of using Word 2010
in print view vs. draft view, although I believe it is not called draft
view in Word 2010. Since I don't have Word 2010 on this computer, I can't
check the correct name, but I hope those using Word 2010 know what I am
referring to.

I will be using Word primarily for manuscript writing, so I will be doing
a great deal of editing but I will also need to know how it looks in print
layout to a sighted person.

It is easy enough to switch back and forth, so I am wondering which way is
the best for actual composition and editing considering the documents are
manuscripts.

I will be using either JAWS 14 or JAWS 18. If people have advice as to
which version of JAWS works best with Word 2010, please feel free to let
me know.

I realize that this may be a matter of personal opinion, but I am open to
suggestions and reasons for those opinions, so any help would be
appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question regarding Verizon email service

2017-03-30 Thread Melissa Hambleton
I just spoke with a lady from Verizon since I have phone and internet from
them.

She did say that Verizon will no longer be handling email and that AOL will
be doing so. She said it was an automatic change and I didn't need to change
my email address so I could keep nightfur...@verizon.net.

I asked if I could still send from this email address and also receive
emails from others if they use that email address and she said yes.

She asked me if I received an email from Verizon stating the changes and I
said no. She said they are sending them out to everyone so I should
eventually get one.

She also said if I sign into the webmail that a pop-up should come up and I
would need to fill out a form to make the changes. I went to my webmail and
no pop-up and I searched the page for something to click on to make changes
but there was nothing at all so I'm not sure what to do but wait for an
email because I think there are to be steps to do in the email to make
changes.

I'm not sure if it is automatic why to fill out a form and also I'm
receiving emails from companies I subscribe to stating if you are a Verizon
email user to change your email address because if automatic why change?

Oh and she said if you use Verizon internet but change your email to a gmail
account and I think yahoo, she said you could lose emails.

The quotes at the beginning and after exe were put in their when I enter on

Also wondering if I have the backslash and spaces in the correct place after

The KNFB Windows app has a file explorer function where you can select a
file to perform OCR on. You can also save the OCR results into an
alternative format.
Since it works with scanners and cameras, and if you want to review the
results in more detail than just having KNFBReader read everything back to
you in one stream, you can save the OCR results on to your computer.
The Jaws OCR function is ok for a quick check of things, but KNFBReader
gives a more detailed and accurate scan.

Sorry to belabor this, and also to be catching up on messages in reverse

OCR feature. I guess using the KNFB Reader as a windows 10 app would save

I tried to download it, when it was only $20 and I got as far as the

Sorry to belabor this, and also to be catching up on messages in reverse
chronological order, but for inaccessible documents, you have JAWS' built-in
OCR feature. I guess using the KNFB Reader as a windows 10 app would save
the step of transferring files from the iPhone to the PC.

I think, your pc's camera takes a picture and the knfb scans and reads any

I tried to download it, when it was only $20 and I got as far as the

Hi,
KNFB can be use with a camera or scanner on a Windows pc running W10. So if
you have the KNFB app open on your pc and hold a Piece of paper about 12 to
15 inches away from the camera and push the field of view report it will
tell you if you have all four corner showing. Even if you don't it still
might scan ok. Then you have to push the take picture button then it will
come of reading for you. Of course you have to make sure the printed side of
the paper is towards the camera lens. You also have to have a camera. If you
do not have a camera you can use a flatbed scanner. Then you just put the
paper on the scanner and open up the KNFB app and tab until you hear scan
image or do a ctrl + T to start the scan. When it is done scanning it will
come up reading in a second or so.

It sounds like these are the kind of links that JAWS verbalizes as something
like, "Same page link." They can be confusing. One method that often works in
such cases is to note the wording in the link, then search for some or all of
that search string to take you to the relevant part of the page.

Hi All,
I am using JAWS 12, MS-Office 2010 Outlook on a Windows 7 machine. When I
want to save an attachment from an Outlook message I am having trouble
getting the attachment to be saved in a specific folder. I've confirmed
that the file is saving as I can search for it and find it, but it is not
ending up where I want it. Here is what I am doing:

. Highlight the message with the attachment in my Inbox. I do not
open the message.

. Use Alt+F to open the File menu and down arrow to save
attachments.

. A dialog box opens and I tab to OK and press Enter. This dialog
box might only come up when I am saving multiple attachments from the same
message all at once.

. I use Shift+Tab 2 or 3 times to get to my folder list .

. I use the up and down arrows to find the folder I want to put the
attachment into, and press enter.

. Tab to Save and press enter.

Am I missing a step? How do I confirm that I have opened the folder where
I want to put the attachments before I activate the save button?

 Thanks,

2, now shift+tab one time, you will see/hear the attachment Right arrow to

3, press the applications key, up arrow and enter on either Save all

Probably easier to enter on save as.

Hello Annette,

Here is another method you might consider trying. After using the OK button
in the first dialog box, use Alt with D to move to the address bar. Use tab
three times to the tree view of folders. Expand the folders in the tree
view using right arrow key or collapse them using left arrow key. Browse
the tree structure until the folder you want to save the attachments in is
selected. If it can be expanded press right arrow key. Press enter key to

the save button.

How do I confirm that I have opened the folder where
I
want to put the attachments before I activate the save button?

 Thanks,
Annette

Hello in Outlook2010,
Save attachments,

1, enter on the message which contains the attached file.

2, now shift+tab one time, you will see/hear the attachment
Right arrow to highlight.

3, press the applications key, up arrow and enter on either
Save all attachments or save as.
Probably easier to enter on save as.

Now you will see the attachment name,
Shift+tab 2 times,
Your in a list of document folder,
Arrow to your choice of folder,
Press enter.
Now tab to the save button.

Let me no if this helps.

Press enter key to
make sure it is selected. Use Alt+S to save the file instead of tabbing to
the save button.

Take care.

When the save dialogue comes up you only need to shift tab once to bring you
to the folder/file list. Jaws should say "folder view list view". Here you
can arrow up and down to find and press enter on the folder you want then
tab to the save button.
Regards
Tom Bisset

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on KNFB app for Windows

2017-03-09 Thread Cristóbal
The KNFB Windows app has a file explorer function where you can select a
file to perform OCR on. You can also save the OCR results into an
alternative format.
Since it works with scanners and cameras, and if you want to review the
results in more detail than just having KNFBReader read everything back to
you in one stream, you can save the OCR results on to your computer.
The Jaws OCR function is ok for a quick check of things, but KNFBReader
gives a more detailed and accurate scan.

Sorry to belabor this, and also to be catching up on messages in reverse
chronological order, but for inaccessible documents, you have JAWS' built-in
OCR feature. I guess using the KNFB Reader as a windows 10 app would save
the step of transferring files from the iPhone to the PC.

I think, your pc's camera takes a picture and the knfb scans and reads any

I tried to download it, when it was only $20 and I got as far as the

All I have been able to figure out is how to stop the reading and start it
again using ctrl + P. If anyone has a list of short cut keys that would be
helpful too. I have looked online but have not found anything.

Mr. Ed

You can also use a flatbed scanner.

With the KNFB program loaded into a PC or laptop you can scan a document

advantage for work or school.

Kimsan,

I know you have an iPhone. There, the KNFB Reader app uses the iPhone's
camera. No need for another device. But obviously you know this.

Hi,
KNFB can be use with a camera or scanner on a Windows pc running W10. So if
you have the KNFB app open on your pc and hold a Piece of paper about 12 to
15 inches away from the camera and push the field of view report it will
tell you if you have all four corner showing.

It reads the inaccessible document already on the computer?

Kimsan,
I think, your pc's camera takes a picture and the knfb scans and reads any
type material.

I tried to download it, when it was only $20 and I got as far as the
personal info and credit card and jaws, then did nothing after that, so I
cancel and closed out after a 4 hour experience!

PS-
Now, it cost $100, good on 10 pc's.

My question is how do you use this blasted thing.

When I scan, do I place it on the keyboard? Or every time I am scanning I
need to have my scanner connected to it so I would need to place the paper
on the tray of the scanner??
It's 19.99 much easier on the phone vs the comp. lol Respectfully, Kimsan
