Re: [lace] membership
Hello to One and All! I have an idea regarding magazines, offer digital and/or printed versions. Then the member can choose to get a digital mag to their inbox for less cost. A higher cost would be for the print version with the digital delivered as an extra bonus.  The quilting magazine, Fons and Porter For the Love of Quilting, offers this type of subscription service. Personally I like the printed version.  (I'm old fashioned that way.) Regarding getting new members. That's an interesting situation. I can apply for a funding grant from my state's arts council. The problem is that I don't have any apprentices. Now that my daughter will be graduating from high school in a couple of weeks, I'll have a little more time to participate in the SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism). It's a non profit historical reenactment group that plays from 650-1600 ad. I've taught several classes on lacemaking and now that I have the time, will do so again. We have events at public parks and people will see what I do and may want to learn. Hugs, Susie Rose  My stores: https://susierosedesigns.zibbet.com https://mountainrosefood.zibbet.com https://SusieRose.Blujay.com http://www.craftsy.com/user/49409/pattern-store Blog: http://fiberismybag.wordpress.com From: Anna Binnie I would like to comment on Jane's comment. I believe that membership of many Lace Guilds is down and that there are fewer members willing to take on the role of 'running' things. The question of subscriptions is also a major problem for many groups, printed magazines cost, they cost to produce and they cost to mail These costs are rising further as members age and few new members come to take their place membership drops leading to a rise in subscriptions leading to a further drop in numbers. Sounds like a chicken and egg situation. But let us look at the sociological changes that have occurred in the last 40 years. In the 1970's when most guilds were established, many women did not work outside the home, many young women were at home with children and importantly had the time to learn crafts and serve on committees. Today young ones have to work to afford their first child, most return to work within a year of that child's birth and try to juggle work, home children. These women do not have time for guilds in the traditional sense. However, from my own family experience these women do access the web to learn their crafts! They form themselves into stitching groups outside the guild structures. So as we age and fail to attract the young we have to rethink the whole notion of the future of guilds and organisations. We also have to look at us, many of us are aging, I laugh when I consider that 30 years ago I was one of the youngest in the local guild and I still am. Those of us post retirement age have a heap of issues to deal with starting with our own health, family members health and need for our assistance and in general spreading ourselves amongst all the community groups many of us are involved with. Sadly I have no solutions BUT I think that we collectively can come up with local solutions and it will be these that will inspired others. Re: [lace] Weather and Holidays
Hello to One and All! Correct me if 'm wrong. Wasn't the discussion about International Lace Day, today (which also is Father's Day in the US) and the effects of the weather. Granted I would have several things to go to, one would be making lace at an outdoor event, but when it will be 110*F/43C*, I'm not leaving the house. And then there are folks on this list, wonder why not many post to the list when they are reprimanded for doing so both on and off the list. (I had been reamed a new one by a "member" off the list. So I don't post much.)  That's why you get the same people posting.  Fortunately there are other lists out there that are not so strict.  Hugs, Susie Rose  My stores: https://www.zibbet.com/SusieRoseDesigns https://www.zibbet.com/MountainRoseFoods https://SusieRose.Blujay.com Group: ufo12fo...@yahoogroups.com Blog: http://fiberismybag.wordpress.com On 20 Jun 2015 3:07 pm, Web wrote: > > Ladies and Gents, > I would like to suggest that discussions of the weather and holidays (such as when Father's Day happens) are more appropriate for the lace chat email group than for the lace group. > Thank you, > Liz R. > Raleigh USA > > - > To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: > unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hi Fellow spiders, Just a slight correction on Robin s email;- calico is a sturdy densely woven cotton fabric in England and well suited for covering a lace pillow especially if it is in a plain, darkish colour. Muslin is a softer, thinner and much more open weave which would be totally unsuitable for a pillow cover as it would catch threads and bobbins as well as shed fibres. [lace] Re-met One of My Students
Hello to One and All! On Sunday, my daughter Leah and me, went to an SCA fighter practice. I haven't been to any event for well over 7 years. One of my students was there. AND she's still making lace! WHOO HOO! As a teacher, it's really great to see a student from years past, still making lace. So we started discussing Elizabethan lace, what is and is not period lace. There are some of us who write epistles, and those of us who write short messages. The short ones can be pithy, but the long ones have the opportunity to include more facts. I have written long messages, filled with what I thought was valuable information, taking a considerable amount of time to word properly and compose thoughts, and received not one response. No, I take it back, it received one response, to the effect that my post was too long. But in the course of conversations at events months after, people have mentioned what I wrote from that same email. So I know that even when there are no responses, my post has been read. There are always negative people around, who, when they tire of a particular thread don't just not read, they comment in a way to end the thread because they are tired of it. Well, that may be, but what that does is shut people up who may have something useful to say. Lurkers, especially, have more useful things to say than they think they do. Personally, I think it highly apt in a group such as this to remember the adage, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Ancillary to that is the idea that if you don't care for something, are tired of it, not interested in a topic, just don't read it. No one here is the sole arbiter of taste. [lace] Silk Clothing - Lace Thread Question
Hello to One and All! This Saturday while "yard saleing" with my neighbor, I purchased cream silk dupioni curtains for $2US. The silk is in very good condition. I want to make a suit out of this fabric. Years ago I've designed a cluny style lace for my suits. Each lace pattern is made individually to follow the cut of each individual clothing pattern. In addition to the lace trim around the edges it has a motif running from the back neckline down to the center of the back. Then hand applied to the clothing. My dilemma...I prefer the color blue over white/cream clothing. (I don't need to look larger than I'm already am! I'm no longer a size 6!) So dye the silk to the color that I want and make my lace white. (Which I prefer and I have a lot of thread for this on hand.) Or keep the silk the cream color and make the lace a royal blue. So here's my question. For blue lace...what thread would you recommend and why? I'm usually making lace in rayon or linen threads. But for this piece I don't want to use rayon. Re: [lace] What thread and/or pattern would you use?
Hi All! Thank you for all of you wonderful suggestions. It's a good idea to purchase as much thread that I think that I'm going to use. Then, just to make sure that I have enough, I buy 3 times as much! I do like Tonder Lace and especially the Tonder Heart. Which is appropriate. Both of my parents came from Danmark. I was born in California. If I can find a good picture of it I can draft the pattern, if I can't find the book. I should have elaborated on my query with my background. My Mother and I used to make 3-5 wedding gowns/parties a year. I understand the ins and outs of making gowns. Also I'm the only wage earner in this household. I make things to sell. If I don't, I can't make money. I don't have the time to complete something when she gets engaged. Unless of course my knight in shining armor whisks me off my feet and turns me into a lady of leisure. God willing and the creek don't rise. I have to plan ahead for these things. I've seen brides get engaged and married in as little as 4 weeks. And then again in 2 years. Yes I know it's HER dress. And HER style. And HER colors. And she WANTS me to make the lace for her wedding dress and the dress. She wants the traditional white dress. That's in keeping with her character. (Well we do live one step above Amish with internet. We live off-the-grid.) As to the style that will happen when the times comes. Oh she wants to make all the goodies that go along with it. Ya think I'm going to be a bit busy. Busy like a one armed wall paper hanger with a 12 room mansion to do. LOL!!! I stopped making bridal gowns for others because my last bride was a bridezilla. Yes it's your special day. But you don't have to treat people who are working for you as if they are nothing but dirt. Don't forget it's your new husbands day also. [lace] What thread and/or pattern would you use?
Hello to One and All! Today my DD Leah turns 16. I want to start making the lace for her wedding gown. I've looked at so many patterns that I can't think anymore. I've been checking patterns for about 6 months. Does anyone have any suggestions as to patterns to use and the thread. I've done all kinds of lace but torchon is my favorite. RE: [lace] talking to bobbins, was There's never enough room
Hi Hi! My Godmother talked to her africian violets. They bloomed beautifully...except for 1. She spent extra time with this one. Still no blossoms or new leaves. Then she tried some reverse phychology on it. Telling it how ugly it was & how beautiful all the other violets were. And if it didn't get any flowers that she was going to pull it out of the pot, stomp on it & throw it in the trash. It took about 3 weeks & it started to get buds. That violet bloomed for 2.5 years without going dorment! It works. On a lace making note: my bookmarks for the lace exchange will be goin out tomorrow. The postal website where you print postage was down. I'll try again tomorrow. Re: Fw: [lace] removing red dye
Greetings to One & All! The name of the quilt soap to vse with overdyed fabrics is 'Retayne'. I use it when washing dark fabrics all the time. I'm not sure if it is available in the UK. [lace] Inexpensive Bobbins
Hello to One & All! A very inexpensive bobbin is a round, paper lollypop stick with plastic 'pony' glued onto the stick. (I made a batch for next to nothing when I ran out of bobbins for a project.) For 1 bobbin you will need: 1 round, paper lollypop stick (Craft stores usually carry these in their candy making area.) 10 plastic pony beads (These are the 1/4'' beads. The hole will jvst fit around the lolly stick.) Craft glue that dries clear (I used a lot of glve so the beads won't wiggle on the stick.) Put some glue on the end of the stick, slip 2 beads over the glue & line up the edge of the top bead with the top edge of the stick. This the head of the bobbin. Do the same with the remaining 8 beads to the other end of the stick. When dry I applied additional glue to the beads at the ends of bobbins & to the beads next to the area where the thread is wound. This is a project that the advlts can do also. Hugs, Susie Rose - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. But something they do on the website is let the pvblic know whose clothes the designers are wearing. That's where I can showcase the other designs I'm capable of. Thats where my knowledge in other areas will prevail. That may or may not be in the challenges. There are 2 forms of fashion: off the rack & coutvre. I make both. To that end, I would like to invite any and all lace makers to join in! The tent will be ours roughly 9-5, and you may come for as much or as little of that time as you would like. This would be a great time to get together with other lace makers, share ideas and questions, put faces to names, and otherwise just have an excuse to carve out some dedicated lace time in what is often an overly-busy Pennsic. If you just want to drop off some samples for display, but cannot commit time, that's fine too; just make sure you come back for your stuff! If possible, I would like to have some idea who might be coming and when, so I can gauge body count and lunch breaks if possible. Re: [lace] Storing bookmarks
Hello to One & All! Bookmarks...Ive made hundreds of them! Probably well over 5 or 600. Im a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, SCA, since 1975. Its because of them that I discovered bobbin lace making. I would make them in our kingdom, Caid, colors, blve & silver. Or if we have visiting 'royality' in that kingdom colors. Sometimes as the award for the tournament champion. Last year we had a pink ribbon tourney to raise $$ for breast cancer, Susan B Koleman Foundation. I designed a ribbon bookmark & made 30 pink ribbons for the event. I make bookmarks for special events: weddings, birthdays, sports teams, holidays etc. Nothing is safe! LOL! In fact this weekend I made 2 in purple & gold & finished 7.75 yards of bobbin lace trim to be given away at Pennsic War. Ovr kingdom is giving items to the kingdom of Calontir, whose colors are purple & gold. I also finished a pink ribbon & started another to put on my Etsy store, Susie Rose Designs.Etsy.com . My sister & hubby will be renewing their wedding vows in Dec. As soon as Sis decides on her colors, Ill be making bookmarks for them. Storage - I use a long business envelope. Not very fancy, but they stay flat and clean. Hugs, Susie Rose - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Lace in Vietnam Warp/Weft
Hello to One & All! Im also a weaver. IMHO woof meaning weft came into being through a misunderstanding by 2 people where one's native tongue was different than the other. My Mom was Danish & could mangle english quite well. I would piggyback many projects off of 1 warping of my loom. Warping a loom is NOT my favorite thing to do. It usually takes about 75 percent of the project's time! One warping I got 7 tablerunners...with a white warp. The next warp, beige, I just tied the thread ends together, three runners on that warp. They were Anerican Colonial patterns that I reproduced. The only difference in them was the color of the weft & the order of the tredling. (Making the sheds to throw the weft.) Re: [lace] upside down lace, dang cats
Hello to One & All! Sorry to hear about your pillow. that's happened to me a few times...to the point of me contemplating making myself a pair of cat fur slippers. They seem to know when the bobbins are not pinned down. I have 5 cats that I've trained to leave my pillows alone. A good rap on the head with a "NO" works for me. They know what no means. "Getting" the bobbins are not an interest anymore. With that being said 1 of my cats, Leonardo de Vinci, has taken an interest in "making" lace. He sits next to the pillow watching. He doesn't "get" the bobbins. He'll pick up the bobbin with 1 claw by the thread or spangle and move it to another location with the other bobbins. Then he'll pull a pin out with his mouth & lay it on the pillow. Then he looks at me as if to say, "well there's the pin, put it where it should go. I don't have opposible thunbs." Be careful what you name your animals, they may be like their namesake. Leonardo - likes to figvre stuff out. Patches - likes to sit by the sewing machine when I'm making quilts or on them. Rather than being on a blanket. Erik the Red - likes to explore & start fights. Mini P - Like her Mom Patches in many ways. Herald - A feline public address system, very talkative not a sicmese . [lace] Glutton for punishment!
Hello to One & All! Yesterday I finished my black fans & gold hearts torchon hankercheif! HURRAH! Guess what...I don't it. It's a little too "airy". I need to reduce the pricking by 15% for the threads used. And there's a few boo boos I didn't catch. I'll use it until it gets replaced. Last night I also started 2 lace projects. A black & gold edging to match the hankie. That will go on the blouse that goes with the chainmaile & suede trenchcoat & skirt. My preliminary guesstimates come up that I'll need about 3 yards. Definately NOT on the conservative fashion side. LOL! The 2nd project is a torchon bookmark. In what colours, black & gold, of course. I'm using up the leftovers from the hankie. Also in progress is a 1 cm wide edging in bleached white 80/2 linen. I currently have over 4 yards. And I'll be selling it when I have over 5 yards. I have 3 pillows going and need a 4th. It's time to make another cookie pillow! I'd post pics but my internet is via cell phone right now. [lace] Guilds and traveling
Hello to One and All! I live in a small town (80 full time residents) in the mountains which is an hour from "town", Las Vegas, Nevada. Up here I am the lace guild! LOL! There is an all encompassing fiber arts guild in town, but they were more interested in weaving and spinning (which I also do) than lace. Traveling an hour is no big deal for me. It all comes down to what people will do for what they like. Just like having the money to do the things they like to do and none for the not so pleasant things. (Going to the movies vs the dentist.) I did live in another small town of 15,000 residents. To them driving 6 miles across town was like driving across the country! I rode my mountain bike 60 to 100 miles every week. [lace] Pizzio di Cantu and yogurt
Hello All! I just finished a quilt for a REAL Texas cowboy who's family been in Texas before it was a state. His family name is Cantu. I think that we need to talk about lace sometime instead of horses and mules. Yogurt, I make 1 or 2 quarts everyday. Currently I use nonfat dry milk a bit of heavy whipping cream, some sugar & about a quarter cup of the previous batch. The cream makes a soft cheese on the top of the yogurt. I use that for cheese blinzes or crepes. Sometimes the whey goes to the cats & angora rabbits as a treat. I used to have a milk goat & get 3 quarts a day! Next year I want to get a cow and make our own cheese, in addition to everything I make. Or if they feel they need some extra classes, or another variety of bobbin lace, then we will do that. I know how to make 6 different varieties of lace besides bobbin lace. So we continue on. Hello One and All! The outfit is a skirt, vest and trenchcoat out of the black suede and a gold blouse. All are of my own design. All of the suede pieces will have the chainmaile. Which BTW are detachable for dry cleaning. The trench and the skirt's modesty panel will have my personal logo, a pink rose in chainmaile. The brest pocket of the trench is where the lace hankie will go. Of course the lace will be sticking out of the pocket. This is one of those outfits that I keep coming up with more pieces to go with then ensamble. The "Viking knitting" is called nalbinding. Hi Bev and Spiders! Well the black is a 40 wt rayon sewing machine embroidery thread and the gold is a 40 wt (I think, I can't find one of the spools right now.), gold metallic sewing machine embroidery thread. Thank you for the ideas. The outfit I'm making is out of black suede with black and gold chainmaile accents. (Yes, I know how to make chainmaile. Who me conventional...nah. Not with pink bangs!) I think the suede is way too heavy for the lace. But maybe I can find some black crepe or silk. I reason why I chose the rayon because it's shiny like silk. Thank you so much for the ideas. If it is black cotton, then try a dress weight cotton fabric, which would be easier to find than fine black linen. I think for the same reasons as home dyeing, black linen if you can find it doesn't stay black. Or you could go with a synthetic - there are linen-like polyesters in the dress fabric line that might be ok. Another thought to be quite unconventional and stitch the lace to a square of black vinyl - 'patent leather' (shiny black vinyl) even? The black would be relevant to the Heavy Metal, but for the R'n'R era, the hankies then, if not white, were printed fabric with the lace trim, so you could even go with a tiny black/white/gold print in a cotton (best place to check would be quilters' sources). Re: [lace] Plastic Storage and Some Washing Warnings
Hello to One and All! I have made lots of lace pieces for my DD clothing. And yes they do get some wear. She used to wear the "Holly Hobby" dresses. (The long sleeved dress underneath with the jumper over it.) At her request, all of these dresses are going to be recycled into several quilts for her. The dresses with the lace are going to be included in the quilt. One dark blue with white pin dot dress still has the tatting around the colar intact. I'm just going to incorporate the collar into the quilt without cutting it up. AKA Crazy quilts. Is that the best, ultimate fate for a piece of lace? What is so inherently wrong in handmade lace being used for that which it was originally intended - ie decoration on a special garment or other item? Yes, some precious things should be looked after to the "nth" degree, and kept in a museum (although they may hardly be looked at, and then only by knowledgable specialists). But lace was made to be used/worn and displayed in all its glory. Nothing lasts for ever, no matter how it's cared for. Yes, take proper care with pieces that are to be kept because of thier historic/sentimental value or exquisite working. But I can't see what's so terrible about using handmade lace on a garment, even if it is old and may have been treated/used in a manner which might make some people shudder. Please, I'm not having a go at anyone, just wanted to mention a different viewpoint. Happy New Year's Eve Eve! Jen in Melbourne, Australia (hot and sunny, forecast temp for tomorrow 42 degs celcius (I think that's about 108 deg F) & I don't have aircon!) Hi, Jen, You're absolutely right. Every last bit we make should /*not*/ be considered precious, heirloom, and/or museum-quality. Some laces are made just for fun. How valuable a piece is supposed to be is one of the decisions we all make when we start a piece of lace, or acquire one (whether we think all that much about it, or glide over it quickly :-D ). There's no reason any lace-maker shouldn't visualize a finite life for his/her work -- gods know, there are plenty of worse ways to "kill" time! The problem I have is that too much heartbreaking-ly misguided cleaning and preservation information is recommended without any real scientific basis for the recommendations. Some of this advice even claims to be up to museum standards. Ordinary people, who have no reason to know what the latest conservation information really is, are being mis-led and cheated into destroying the laces they are trying to conserve (for themselves or their families/heirs). Look at lots of the advice given to non-textile-specialists. These folks without background will follow the advice as stated, believing the writers of the magazine article/book/internet essay are the experts they appear to be. With the best of intentions, and /*thinking they've done their research*/, the owners end up with yellow, brown, or shredded textiles way before they and their families want to, sometimes well within living memory of the days when the lace was new. But the advisers never "scale" the advice they're giving to the value of the objects they're discussing (in terms of worthiness or desirable degree of preservation). It's not surprising, really, when they don't even check the base scientific accuracy of their stated opinions. There is good science out there, why can't these advisers use it? You'd think museum folks kept all their information top-secret or something. (Hi, Devon!) :-D Easier but less-preservative kinds of cleaning and storage are perfectly appropriate for many of the things we make (I think of the Christmas card exchange pieces, which, lovely as they are, usually take little time to make and are probably all stored in and with paper, foil, stickers with plastic and glue, etc. -- feel free to correct me if I've got this one wrong). We're all grown-ups here, we get to decide these things for ourselves, don't we? But then, /*we*/ all know about good, bad, and terrible lace care. Not to mention, where to go to find out more, when we need to. :-D Bottom line is, as you feel it
[lace] Girl Scouts & Bobbins
Hello to One and All! I made some real cheap lace bobbins when I didn't have enough for a project. I also gave some out to some lace students when they needed more bobbins than what they purchased. The are made wth lollypop sticks and pony beads. The sticks are 4 inches/10 centimeters long. I use craft glue to glue the beads onto the sticks. My arrangement of the beads are like this: 00 Eight beads glued at the bottom of the stick & 2 glued at the top. If you don't use enough on the beads on the ends they may sometimes pop off. Easy repair - more glue.
