 Hi,

I am having a problem with entering a specific date period for an
event. The period is 1 B.C. till 11 A.D. I am using the Dutch version
of Legacy6 De Luxe (pre-release). I have tried entering in all
concievable combinations B.C. before, after, etc. with, or without
dots, 4 digit years. Every time I get an indication that the date
period is not recognised. Any suggestions?

Hello list,

I'm embarrassed to even be making this request because
I don't consider myself to be dumb, but I just don't
know what I am doing wrong when trying to merge two
different Legacy files. I've read all the directions
and search the archives but somehow I am just not
getting it. Would someone be willing to walk me

Hi Kathy,

Assuming you are are using the Sentence form for events (on Report
Options - Format tab - Event Format) edit the Event Sentence
Definition for the relevant events to include [CR] before the [notes].

If you want this list style with the carriage return, I think you
have to use the Sentence style and re write the sentence to produce
this same output.
You can get samples for this if you add a non standard event and look
at the Sentence Definition
eg: for all fields filled: [EventName]: [Desc], [Date],
[Place].[Sources] [Notes]
which you would edit to
[EventName]: [Desc], [Date], [Place].[Sources] [CR][Notes]

Re extra blank lines.

Check the General Note and see whether there are empty paragraphs at
the bottom. If you can place the cursor lower than the last word, you
have empty paragraphs - so delete until you can't do that.

Another possibility if it is happening for everybody's General Notes
is in the Report Options - Page Layout tab - Customise Report Spacing
button.

BTW - if you want the General Notes to start on the line below the
heading, edit the relevant Wording Tab for the report to add [CR] at
the end of the heading.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy and Vista memory usage

2007-02-15 Thread ronald ferguson

Mark,

I haven't yet installed Vista so have not studied its construction but your
suggestion does sound a little dangerous. Firstly you say replace, would
it not be safer to rename the Vista file and then copy WinHlp32.exe into the
same folder.

I also wonder if programs which are designed for Vista use would then
display their help files since the file they use would no longer be present?
I can envisage one having to continually switch the names of the (now) two
Windows help files to accomodate the program in use.

Richard,

It does work as Cathy described. However, a word of warning to those who use
Pedigree Web changes - changing the RIN destroys the link between the web

Actually it sounds like it should work the same way but I've always been
afraid to try it. I have Legacy Deluxe and have noticed the Renumber RIN
feature. If RIN # 100 and 200 ware vacant would that procedure renumber
only

the 2 highest RINS into those missing slots?

In PAF I once exported the whole file to GED and reimported. All RINs after
first vacant one were renumbered and I have been reluctant to do that
Legacy

procedure lest all RINs get changed.

My procedure is not as difficult as it may sound but I will do it Legacy's
way if it works as desired.

No, you don't need to change every Event for every individual, just once

From *any* Edit Event screen you can click on Edit Event Sentence

Biffle Creek is not in the GEO database (I doubt it was even ever a bona

entered Biffle Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky, USA for the location.

According to US Cities Galore, there *is* an Ages in Harlan County,

There is also a Layden in Harlen County, Kentucky.

[LegacyUG] LDS Sources

2007-02-15 Thread Jenny M Benson
I have found quite a lot of entries in the IGI which seem to relate to
my family. I have printed out the relevant sheets and recorded my
findings in Legacy, but not yet had the opportunity to visit an FHC to
view the originals.

When enter data from the IGI, I include as Source Detail the Batch No,
Source Call No and Sheet No. Is this the information I would need to
supply in order to order film at the FHC?

Yesterday I found my first record in an American Census. I am used to
recording British Census information, where the full reference is PRO
Class, Piece No, Folio and Page. What is the correct reference for an
American Census entry - is it just the NA Film Number and the page
number?

This particular Census record has the Census Place 3rd Ward, Brooklyn,
Kings (Brooklyn), New York City-Greater, New York. I understand the
word Ward and I know Brooklyn is an area within New York City and I
presume the last part indicates New York State, but I am confused by the
Kings (Brooklyn) part. Can someone explain, please?

Re: [LegacyUG] LDS Sources

2007-02-15 Thread ronald ferguson

Jenny,

Have you noticed that you can automatically update the individual and family
from the LDS Screen? Doing so will automatically put the details into your
Sources under the IGI Master List (which it will create if you don't have it
at present). It does need a bit of editing though as the download date is
included in the detail as well as in the Date Box on the Source Detail Page.

Also the @ button at the bottom takes one to the IGI record on the Family
Search site.

If you have then maybe somebody else needs the information!

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy - What is it for?

2007-02-15 Thread Krones2004
You people are too funny for words. As a new user I do agree that Legacy is
great for genealogy. I, personally, think of the RINs as a something the
program needs to keep track of for its own sanity, and use my own ID number
for my ancestors. And the only time I seem to ask for help from the technical
section is when I can't get something to work for my genealogy - not other
stuff.

As far as TV, hey, there is the HIstory Channel. And right now our local PBS
station is re-running Ken Burns Civil War series. Don't forget - genealogy is
history and history is genealogy.

Good luck hunting those elusive ancestors to you all.

I think it would be good to incorporate X10 capabilities in Legacy so that
when you're working in the wee hours, the lights could be turned on in the
den and the coffee maker could be turned on to keep me awake.

It might also be good to be able to program my PVR to record the shows I'm
missing while I'm busy searching online.

are adding more and more features to what SHOULD be a Family History /
Genealogy program ... mainly to satisfy people who don't want to ( or
 are

unable to ) use / invest in a word processor, photo editing, etc. etc.,
program(s), but are always demanding that tools like those be added to
 the

program. All the arguments about being needed and / or ( maybe ) useful
might be valid for some, but just tend to clutter up and detract from the
programs intended function ... that of a Genealogy program.

All the postings on the users group site tend to reflect that by all the
confusion all these additions are causing.

I am not subscribed to the list, because I got tired of reading all the
wish list and endless complaints because something can't be figured
 out
postings ... I periodically read the list archives and find many of the
 postings borderline comical.

It makes me wonder how these people even find time to actually DO any
 Family

computers pencil, paper, phone, and mail method of research.

Please ... leave the program as it's intended to be!

I smiled when I read your email and Dick's. I go back a ways too---1982,
Family Roots, Apple IIc. Before that it was exclusively stubby pencil and
paper.

The 1982 days saw the barest of bones for a computer genealogy
program---but, oh my, it was SO much better than that ole stubby pencil.

I remember my grandmother complaining of the first automobiles--who needed
radios and windshield wipers? What would she would think of today's cars
with DVD screens and voice navigation systems. And electric starters!! Why
that ole handcrank worked just fine.

Those days do have an air of romantic charm. Life sans indoor plumbing,
refrigeration, electricity, telephones, gas engines, central heat, Legacy

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy on shared drive

Hello to all,

I joined this user group in November but this is the first time I have
posted. I have learned much from all of the questions and responses. Now
I
need some advice from the many who have more expertise than I.

Due to a disability I have a PC but use my laptop more frequently. But
alas! Last week my laptop hard drive gave up the ghost, died, and I lost
everything I had not saved to, yes, floppies. My CD burner also was not
working. Not to despair, however. Although I lost all of my Legacy data,
it is still on paper. Both my mother and I had been doing genealogy
research since the pen and paper days. For the most part I had just been
entering data from the paper records and doing some online research to
verify. And I had printed most of the data I had found on line of
significance.

So, before I reinstall Legacy and begin again, I would like to know if any
of you have installed Legacy on a shared drive and how it worked for you.
In other words, I would install it on both my PC and my laptop, when I get
it back, in a shared situation so that what I enter on one computer would
be
available on the other without carrying CDs or flash drives from one to
the
other. By the way, I have as secure in-home wireless network for my
communication. This would be especially helpful since my scanner is
connected only to my PC but I can't spend much time at my PC on each
occasion.

Your opinions and words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

I am guessing the vendor said nothing could be saved.
I fried a hard drive, and after $700, they rescued
90%. Before throwing it out, see if this last ditch
effort might help. Every keystroke you don't need to
re-do has its own price. I wioll never not backup

 Hello to all,

I joined this user group in November but this is the
 first time I have
posted. I have learned much from all of the
 questions and responses. Now I
need some advice from the many who have more
 expertise than I.

Due to a disability I have a PC but use my laptop
 more frequently. But
alas! Last week my laptop hard drive gave up the
 ghost, died, and I lost
everything I had not saved to, yes, floppies. My CD
 burner also was not
working. Not to despair, however. Although I lost
 all of my Legacy data,
it is still on paper. Both my mother and I had been
 doing genealogy
research since the pen and paper days. For the most
 part I had just been
entering data from the paper records and doing some
 online research to
verify. And I had printed most of the data I had
 found on line of
 significance.

So, before I reinstall Legacy and begin again, I
would like to know if any
of you have installed Legacy on a shared drive and
 how it worked for you.
In other words, I would install it on both my PC and
 my laptop, when I get
it back, in a shared situation so that what I enter
 on one computer would be
available on the other without carrying CDs or flash
 drives from one to the
other. By the way, I have as secure in-home
 wireless network for my
communication. This would be especially helpful
 since my scanner is
connected only to my PC but I can't spend much time
 at my PC on each
 occasion.

Your opinions and words of wisdom are greatly
 appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report problem

2007-02-15 Thread Jason Presley

No, in my case, each section of the book I'm publishing should be for
Fisher A. Deming. I should have 'The Pedigree of Fisher A. Deming' (I
don't have the problem you're seeing as my pedigree is only one page), 'The
Ancestors of Fisher A. Deming' and 'The Descendants of Fisher A. Deming.
But for some reason, my ancestor report, though all the proper data is
included, it is being titled The Ancestors of Rufus Presley, while Rufus
Presley isn't associated with this report in any way.
He was my default individual, where the program opened every time I
launched it, but I have since changed that to be Fisher Deming, yet the
report still gets titled with Rufus' name every time I generate it. The
ancestor report generates fine if I do it by itself, it only gets mis-titled
when I generate it as a part of a book in the Publishing Center.

A drop down came in, with the message did you mean 11
B.C., if not change it. It changed it to '0011 B.C.',

Next input '11 AD'. Message came back, with variation.
changed to '0011'.
The age at death is 22 on screen, which validates it.
Is there still a problem. If so, what.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy - What is it for?

I too support Legacy remaining a pure genealogy program. However for me
that includes
a) the ability to export its reports to a wordprocessor for further editing
(which it does)
b) and - because it has become a accepted part of genealogy programs - much
improved charting capability

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report problem

2007-02-15 Thread Jason Presley

Rufus isn't in Fisher's tree at all, that's why I'm confused. I've
re-created the ancestor report over and over with no luck. I've double and
triple checked that Fisher is the person chosen for each report, Rufus
shouldn't show up in the report at all. Especially not in a report of
ancestors, as Rufus was born about 1900 and Fisher was born about 1790.

Maybe I just need to ditch the whole book and start from scratch.

Jason,

As you suggest, your Rufus cannot just come from anywhere so there must be a
reason. It may be some records are crossed so the first thing I would do is
a check/repair maintenance. Then Set Relationships and have another go.
Please let us know how this goes on. Haven't time at the moment to check out
what happens on my PC but will have a go if you don't get sorted.

Look at your Publishing center list of docs. Is the

this is it. It has happened to me, jumping to someone

Hope this fixes it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy - What is it for?

2007-02-15 Thread Bill Wilson

I agree too. However for me that (along with your includes) would include:

a) web page generation (needs some improvement).
b) single event attached to multiple individuals.
c) separate the program files from the user files. i.e. put the
program in Program Files and put the user files in My Documents.

Of course I'm sure there are any number of Legacy users that would
love to see things like photo manipulation, word processing
capabilities and indeed other cool features included. These options
are not important to me now but as the genealogy programs evolve they
will inevitably have all these and other capabilities. A few years
from now when they're talking about adding web crawlers to run in the
background to search for all information from library, government, or
any other linked info (and all databases will be linked) on anyone in
your family and also checks for 100% surety and auto updates your file
and generates new updated reports and web pages with advanced word
processor formatting while you sleep. Well, how did they manage to
do research manually back on 07? It must have been so tedious. I can't
imagine spending hours and hours every week searching for family data.
I think I'll just go back to sleep and see what my personal
genealogist has found for me when I wake up.

And if Legacy doesn't add these features someone else will! And that's
how companies lose the edge. So, I don't think it's time for the
Legacy folks to get rid of all the programmers in the new features
development area. I'm looking forward to v7.0.

Every once in a while I think about switching to another genealogy
program. I'm very particular about fully investigating a programs
capabilities before I buy and so far I haven't found anything that
works better for me than Legacy. I've tried PAF and FTM and neither
one is up to Legacy's capabilities. TMG has the witness feature but as
far as I can tell their web page generation isn't as good as Legacy's.
I hate to sound like a Legacy commercial but it really is a great
program even if they keep adding all those dreaded advanced
capabilities.

ok, I guess I'm done rambling.

a) web page generation (needs some improvement).
Agree, but I haven't found any family history program that gets it right

b) single event attached to multiple individuals.

Yes - one of the features I miss from my time using TMG

c) separate the program files from the user files. i.e. put the
program in Program Files and put the user files in My Documents.

You can keep your data files anywhere or are you refering to the
configuration files which I think currently need to be in the program
directory. Legacy should read its settings from the current users documents
and settings directory or the the registry.

I hate to sound like a Legacy commercial but it really is a great

It may not be perfect but I've tried at least half a dozen other programs
and Legacy comes out tops.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Book Report problem

2007-02-15 Thread Jason Presley

Ok, I ran the check/repair and the set relationships (for both Rufus and
Fisher), but had no luck.
However, I did manage to fix it I ran the ancestor book as it's own
report from scratch, set everything the way I wanted it, previewed it and
saved it. Then I re-opened my book under the Publishing center, deleted the
Ancestor book report, saved the book and closedLegacy (just to be sure).
Lastly, I re-launched Legacy, loaded my book in the publishing center,
re-added the ancestor book report, edited it to load my previously saved and
working stand-alone ancestor book report and previewed the whole thing.
THIS time it the correct title showed up on all reports within the book.

A very round-about road to get there, but everything looks good now with no
errant names.

Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help

2007-02-15 Thread Pat Jones
Elizabeth, I feel just like you do. I've brought a big datatbase
into Legacy from another program and while it appeared to come
over without too many glitches, I'm now finding strange couplings
of sources and people who have absolutely no reason to have had
that source coupled with them.

Also, trying to figure out how to insert sources and events and
all their associated windows have about driven me to the wall.
The book has definintely NOT been of use but I did find the first
set of CDs (borrowed from a friend) cleared up some of the
problems with how to insert information into Sources and Events.
I finally managed to get one Census looking the way that I wanted
it and made my own cheat sheet so that I could redo all of the
Census information the same way now and in the future.

I'm still playing with the way I've entered them. Tonight I'd
like to see what happens if I enter only the words US Federal
Census for the Master Source List Name, then define which one it
is in some other window, wondering if that would cut down on the
number of entries in the Master Source List without causing
problems elsewhere.

Is there anyone out there who has tried this? What were the
results?

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Problems with date

 Hi,

I am having a problem with entering a specific date period for an
event. The period is 1 B.C. till 11 A.D. I am using the Dutch version
of Legacy6 De Luxe (pre-release). I have tried entering in all
concievable combinations B.C. before, after, etc. with, or without
dots, 4 digit years. Every time I get an indication that the date
period is not recognised. Any suggestions?

[LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views

2007-02-15 Thread Pat Jones
In the INDEX view, my first search column is USER ID while the
first file column is headed RIN. I have a party with the #
14851 (don't know whether this is a User ID or RIN number for
him). When I put this number in the search field (User ID), I
can't find him although I seem to be able to find everyone else I
try it with using their number. When I do a search on his name,
however, he comes up immediately.

What is going on and how do I fix this for this person?

Hi Pat,

You can customise the columns in Index view so I suggest you add User ID.
See Options button on Index View and access Customise Columns.

Suggest you also use File File Maintenance Check/Repair
It's worth doing this fairly regularly to check the indexes in the database.

Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help

Pat,

Re: Census - Master Source(s)

If you look in the LUG archives (see Legacy Messages below) you will find
many, many references to ways of recording these. Which more or less break
down into 2 camps; those, like me, who have only one source censuses and
those who break them down into local areas/offices/individuals/year/etc.

I cannot speak for census other than the UK but I have no problem with using
the one master source called census with the year in the details and any
comments in the notes. Others disagree but for me 'each to their own'!

What were the
results?

SearchSearch the IGI Website. When you have run the search and come to view

Re: [LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views

2007-02-15 Thread Pat Jones
Tried going to Options, Customize, View to see what was checked.
Under Display RINS on names I have checks in On all Name Lists
and On Family View and Pedigree View. Under Numbers to Add to
Names I have RIN turned on.

I have looked at this name under the various views and the RIN is
always 1344. I can find him on the Index by sorting on the RIN.
I can NOT access him by putting his number in the User ID box; I
can find everyone else I have tried by putting their RIN number
in the User ID box.

I ran both File Maintenance options and that did't help. I shut
down the program and brought it up again and that didn't help.
I'm stumped as to a fix. I CAN always do a workaround by just
using his name for the sort but just seems strange that just his
doesn't seem to work when reying to locate him using User ID.

Re: [LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views

2007-02-15 Thread Cathy

Hi Pat,

If your User IDs are the same as the RINs it sounds as if you used
the option to write the RINs to the User IDs. This only occurs for
those people in the database at the time.

Perhaps you have added this person since.
If your User IDs are equivalent to RINs why use them except as a
backup in case you do something that changes a RIN or two.

Options Customise is the place to go to display RINs on some names
- but not to have columns for RIN and UserID in the Index View. You
have to go to Index View and use the Options button on that page to
customise the columns.
