RE: [LegacyUG] My wife's parents have become unlinked

2008-11-24 Thread music-line
By the way, if I right click on my wife's name and go to Add>Parents, when I
find the parents in the list and click on, it tells me they are already her
parents, but there is no link or names in the box where the parents should
go.

Best wishes

Subject: [LegacyUG] My wife's parents have become unlinked

Hi everyone,

For some reason my wife has become unlinked from her parents. When I click
on the parents field to link back it asks me if I want to link to an
existing person, I click yes, and it links back to her father. It does not
automatically link to her mother, but when I try the same proceedure with
linking to her mother, it creates another marriage, with only my wife as the
daughter. Elsewhere in the database my wife's parents still exist as a
married couple with all the correct children. There are no complications
like a remarriage, with either of her parents.

I have restored a backup file and the same thing happens. I have run file
maintenance and everything seems fine. Is there another way of linking
existing parents that I have forgotten or didn't know in the first place? I
know many would not wish to persue this matter but how do I get my
mother-in-law back (and father in law). ;-)

Best wishes

David

RE: [LegacyUG] Pictures - loading problem

2008-11-24 Thread Sherry/Support
I've found that if you have a lot of pictures with large files sizes linked
to a picture gallery, then it will be very slow and flicker. I have one
person with quite a few pictures of 2-3 MB attached in his Picture Gallery
and it's a lot slower loading than in the other Picture Galleries with
smaller pictures.

I've always said that file sizes should be no larger than 150-200 KB in
size. However, Geoff reminded me that files that small wouldn't work well on
wall charts created in Legacy Charting.

So my compromise suggestion would be have the preferred picture which you
would expect to use on the wall charts be high resolution. Make all the
rest smaller - the smaller size/lower resolution works fine in books and web
pages.

And since sound, video and document files such as PDF aren't redrawing
thumbnails, then those shouldn't affect the speed of the Picture Gallery
loading.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Help!

I have used Legacy for years, and Legacy 7 for months. All of a
sudden, all photos which I store in c:\Legacy\Pictures are not loading
quickly and neatly on individuals. Instead, when I click on the Show
Picture Gallary for an individual, the picutures come up but the hour
glass runs and runs and it starts to flicker and up at the top, left,
it keeps saying, off and on,

I have the database in c:\Legacy\Data and the pictures in

Any ideas?

I'm using version 7 with all updates on vista64.

Everything has been working fine but I have just noticed that when I enter or
change a location I get an error.
If I use an existing location there is no problem.

However, if I enter a new location in the born or died I get an error on the
confirm new location box that pops up.

The standardisation tip box pops up with three boxes that are usually greyed
out and which you can not click on.

Clicking anywhere in the box gives the "ding" sound to show an error.

I am then stuck here, I cannot get out of this.

If I press enter a few times the program normally shuts down.

Previously, I have been able to enter new locations with v7 so I dont know if
its an error with some update as I use legacy infrequently.
Legacy says im up to date.

John,

I just checked and have .jpg and .bmp and 4 .pdf files but no .tiff. I
checked the folders of other persons in the database and mostly they
are not flickering and are loading ok. Samuel Richmond and 21 pictures
attached. I went into Picture Center and removed several so there are
12 for him now, all .jpg. His pictures are loading very slowly and
flickering.

I have done a check/repair and that did not stop the problem. Then I
reloaded the Legacy 7 program from the internet. It is still not
working correctly. I have 2,413 pictures in the c:\Legacy\Pictures
file. Is there a limit to size of picture file for the program to
handle it correctly?

RE: [LegacyUG] Duplicate entries

2008-11-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Claire,

As I am sure you realise, the obvious answer is that you inadvertently entered
them twice!

Having disposed of that, I cannot answer without knowing how you were putting
the names in in the first place. If it was a straight forward typing in of new
names then I am afraid I have no idea.

You need to select Reports > All Reports and select a report
Ancestors, Descendants, Descendant Narrative for example - assume Descendant.

Then select Report Options button at bottom of Options for Descendant Books
and then select the Sources Tab.

There you have options to print a Bibliograhpy, Footnotes, etc.

these titles would be 'accurate?'. I have a lot of redundancy in my notes.

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate entries

2008-11-24 Thread Claire Fuqua

Ron,

I am using the split screen and I do believe that is when the problems
occur. However, I am also having a problem that has nothing to do with
the split screen.

Occasionally, when only one database is open, I enter a family and,
unbeknown to me, one member of the family is entered twice. This second
person has a different Rin number and has no connections but all of the
relevant birth and death information for that person is included. The
second Rin number is usually a little larger than the first but they are
not sequential. This is a different problem but I cannot imagine how
duplicate entries are happening. Any thoughts on any of this?

I am having a problem when I have two databases open at the same time.
SOMETIMES when I enter a person into one of the databases, that person
is also entered (automatically) into the other open database. As I
said, this only happens occasionally and usually it is sometime before I
find the duplicate entry.

I have one database that holds only connected family members and another
that holds family members that are not connected with the number one
person. All of a sudden I find a lone person in the connected database,
that rings the bell as there should never be an individual without
connections in that database. I then check my other database and find
that same person in the other database, either sitting there alone or,
perhaps, with a family of his own.

There are times that the individual that was entered into the fragmented
database shows up in the connected database (incorrectly of course) as a
child of a couple.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Thank you, in advance, for any suggestions,

For those of you who have used/made timelines, how does one go about
creating customized timelines? How do you import them into Legacy?

I think others have mentioned they used historical background materials

It's OK, Tim. I'm usually pretty good at checking the Help files first, but
must have had a "blonde" moment (and I apologize in advance to blondes

for and entering individuals and their information, but customized timelines
seems too useful a tool to go unused.

I see that someone has suggested the Help Files, always a good starting point.
I also opened one of the Timeline files in C:/Legacy ( or wherever you put it)
to have a look at the contstruction. They are only text files and hence will
open in Notepad but also Wordpad, Word, OpenOffice.org etc.

Shelly: British North America or BNA could work in a pinch, but that's
more

of a geographical description; it never was a govening body since the
colonies were individually chartered by the King of England. It's sort of
mixing apples and oranges--but certainly better than saying that someone
was

born in 1700 in "Massachusetts, USA."

Keith:

Do you have a secret update or something?? When I produce a report,
identical sources repeat for every instance when they're cited. A
1-generation report that should have about a dozen sources suddenly has 45.
When the report is created as an RTF file or opened in Word much of the
source formatting is lost while the source count increases to 83. I hardly
consider this "fixed." (Using 7.0.0.55)

Of course, if you know a way around the problem I'd love to hear it!

MANY of the problems are solved - even in the sourcing. I believe
there will probably be an update before Christmas although that is
only my thinking. Easiest install is to go to the LEGACY HOME tab

to stall at about 27% complete - be patient - it will go on and

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing emails

2008-11-24 Thread Pauline B. Cramer

I also never use the Legacy SourceWriter templates.
It is certainly an option to group a collection of emails between two
people of which each is both the writer and recipient.
I do this myself, and I have also seen this sort of thing done in books
where a collection of correspondence between two people is published
with letters arranged chronologically.

Thank you for your responses. It appears that, from these responses that
no-one is using the email template in the way it is designed. Although the
responses represent a relatively small sample of those using the programme,
the experience of people using the LUG leads me to believe that the
programmers ought to be looking at a different format for this. I wonder if
one option might be to group a collection of emails between two people of
which each is both the writer and recipient.

Re: [LegacyUG] What would you call "America" in 1666?

2008-11-24 Thread myrna20
Good morning all,

There is a listing of states and when they were admitted to the
union on Wikipedia.org
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_date_of_statehood).
I printed this off and have it next to my keyboard. Until the
state was admitted/ ratified I always use "American Colonies" or
the territory; after that I use USA. I have one family that came
from France to Quebec and always use "Quebec, Canada" even though
it is not totally correct.

Hope this helps

RE: [LegacyUG] What would you call "America" in 1666?

2008-11-24 Thread mffowler
Shelly and others,

I think “North American Colonies” would be the best description.
Historically speaking, to refer to the area as British North America
especially in 1666 would not be correct as the French and Spanish also had a
large presence. King Philip’s war, also known as the French and Indian war,
occurred about ten years later. If memory serves me correctly, another list
member used "Colonial America" in a message months ago. That would also be
another good option.

Hope this helps.

As far as the Source Citation goes I would definitely give the location
exactly as in the given Source - "America." But for my own benefit I
would enter something in the Location field in <>. Such is my
ignorance, I don't know how the "colonised" part of North America that

but if I was fairly sure that that was what was meant by "America"

This indicates to me that I am not entirely certain yet, but it's a good

RE: [LegacyUG] Surname after divorce on reports

2008-11-24 Thread ronald ferguson

Elizabeth,

On the web it is below the vital Events and there is a line which says "Also
known as xx". Not doing many written reports I think it comes after the
name, in brackets, in both cases I think one has to use a check box for it to
show.

Sure, one can work it out from the surnames of *all* the husbands, and I really
should add that I started to do this pre V7 so that I could readily print a
list of women using their married name, or anybody else with a name change, for
eg. searching death records. However, I have continued the practice.

In certain circumstances it is also useful for "common law" wives and others
who retain their maiden name on marriage but are also know by their partner's
surname in some circumstances, and it would not be appropriate to formally
include the partner's surname as hers when it appears on the marriage name list.

As you said though, how one uses it is a personal decision.

Ron Ferguson

Several in my files have gone through divorces - and returned to a
maiden name (or previous married name) - through the courts. But
reports show the divorces surname since that was the last one that was
legal. Any way to change the legal last name? This would also apply
to a legal name change of any kind.

 Ideas??

RE: [LegacyUG] Sourcing emails

2008-11-24 Thread music-line
Thank you for your responses. It appears that, from these responses that
no-one is using the email template in the way it is designed. Although the
responses represent a relatively small sample of those using the programme,
the experience of people using the LUG leads me to believe that the
programmers ought to be looking at a different format for this. I wonder if
one option might be to group a collection of emails between two people of
which each is both the writer and recipient.

Best wishes

I agree. Personally, I don't. Whenever I am entering information from a
document or other source, I enter the information as it is given, so the
names of Joe Bloggs's wife will be entered as Fanny Adams but when she
appears on a Census after he marriage that data will be entered as
"Fanny Bloggs ..." or perhaps from a newspaper report or letter she will
be "Mrs Joe Bloggs".

I think this is sufficient to indicate that she was known as Mrs Bloggs.
If she is a lady of the late 20th Century I may well have documentation
that shows her first as Fanny Adams and later as "Ms Adams" or as "Joe
Bloggs and his wife Fanny Adams."

Re: [LegacyUG] Male Children Changes Name by Deed Poll

How do I show that the male child changes his name by deed poll.
I have shown his children with his new name (as the birth certificates)
but not sure what to do about his surname.  I currently show both in
the surname field with his birth name normal and new name in brackets.

I think the best way would be to use one of his surnames in the surname
field in the usual way and enter the other one as an AKA. (That way, a
Descendant Report (for example) will begin with "Joe Bloggs, son of
Father Bloggs and Fanny Adams was born ... Another name for Joe is Joe
Doe.") It's up to you which name you choose to use as the "usual" name
and which as the AKA.

By way of explanation, you could include an Event of "Deed Poll" and
give the date of the name change and detail which was his surname at
birth and which was the one he adopted.
