Re: [LegacyUG] Pocket Genealogist vs. GedStar Pro

2009-08-11 Thread MJMethod
The answer is touched on in the article, but to be blunt:
- Pocket Genealogist if you have (or want) Windows Mobile
- GenStar Pro if you have (or want) Palm OS

After that, there are lots of features and factors, e.g.
- Size and format of screen, etc, of the smartphone
- Pocket allows update/syncing of device; GenStar does not.
- etc.

You will probably want to add a couple of criteria to limit the records in

You have to "reverse engineer" this. A sample was also shown in one of the

1. Do a search for all individuals with a "census" event and then tag them
with a number; let's say 9.
2. Next, search for ALL Individuals with Tag 9 = untagged.

Re: [LegacyUG] Notes VS Events Text

Bob,
This kind of option has been touched on before - basically "personal
preference".

I am normally a "lumper". Obituaries go into Source Detail Text (if
transcribed) or Source Detail Multimedia. I don't expect to reproduce them for
everyone, unless there is something unusual, noteworthy, or well-phrased. If
so, I accept the redundancy of copying or extracting what I need into Death

entered the obitiuary/writeup into the text/comments block. When I prepare a

them in the General notes would be more appropriate. When reading a book,
the general notes appear right below the individual in lieu of being a

In accounting there are' Generally Accepted Accounting Practices' - so is

Re: [LegacyUG] How to scan and copy a text record int Legacy "Events"

You have two options:
1. Attach the PDF or jpg or text doc to the event (or to the Source or
Source Detail)
2. If your scan software has the option of OCR, you can convert the scan to
text, then paste it into the event (or Source or Source Detail). [My
impression from what you said is that you simply changed the filename
extension
to ".txt" but didn't actually convert it.]

Better yet, make a copy of your family file, then open that one as a second

- If you are on the Sources screen, highlight the source you want to repeat

"Copy/Overwrite Existing"
- highlight another event you want to use the same Source
- click the "Add clipboard source" icon (just above clipboards, looks like a

click Save. Note: if you are also going to be repeating the same detail, you
can un-check the "prompt for detail" box in the bottom left before you Save.
Then you won't be bothered with it each time.

I suspect you just had a glitch in the transmission or the process you used.
The name that you each use doesn't matter. I've been using Intellishare with my

I am assuming that the jump drive worked (you imply that but didn't explicitly
say so).

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "I exported my family file to a Legacy file

Does anybody have any ideas or experience with this? The only problem that I
can think of is the possibility that the file name I used for the e-mailed

There are no longer any other legal "towns" in D.C., though some of them
certainly are still neighborhoods like Georgetown. That's the result of the
1871 legislation.

Also, D.C. used to include the Arlington area across the Potomac. That area was
returned to Virginia (perhaps as part of the 1871 changes).

municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871
effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the
District of Columbia. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named
the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C. Based on this you
would enter Washington District of Columbia as the City with no county or state
and USA as the Country. However, I think I would use Washington as the city,
District of Columbia as the County or State and USA as the Country.

AniMap Sitefind states Washington as the City, District of Columbia as the
County and DC as the State but I don't think that's any legal description, just
an easy way to find it.

I believe the Geo Locator in Legacy states: Washington, District of Columbia,
District of Columbia, USA (or maybe this is something I inadvertently added)

For short location I have entered: Washington, DC.

Re: [LegacyUG] To Tim and others

Windows 7 will be the "operating system" successor to Vista, probably sometime
this year (certainly NLT next year). A lot of nice improvements (or changes,
depending on your point of view). It is already in the Testing phase.

Legacy 7 is quite independent from that. It is the "application" we are using
and it works fine under Vista as long as you follow instructions and do not
install it in C:\Program Files. (I don't think that will change in Win 7.)

Work around: create an event (e.g. "Gravestone", leave all of the narrative

I am curious about what purpose the 'Burial Pictures' and/or the 'Multimedia'

Re: [LegacyUG] When legacy does not like a town - Rumney Marsh, Massachusetts, USA

2008-11-10 Thread mjmethod
Your choice. And don't worry about the Geo Location Database.

Traditional genealogy would have you show the original location, Rumney Marsh,
then explain in notes how it evolved to Revere, Mass.

Others find it much easier to use the present-day name and then explain the
history.

This isn't unusual. Think of how frequently we see something in a biography
like "He was born in Chicago (or London, or Paris, or Los Angeles, etc.)" when
the technical reality is that he was born in some suburb or other jurisdiction.

There is nothing to prevent you from "marrying" them twice. Legacy makes it
easy.
Enter the marriage, then within that show status as Divorced, perhaps also add
an Event for the Divorce. Save. Right Click on husband or wife, select Add |
Husband (or Wife), and do the same again for the re-marriage. Then add the
children.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is this possible?

2008-09-12 Thread mjmethod
To my knowledge, No.

Issue: Have you used Source Detail with the specific records? If so, they would
also be lost. That may be OK, depending on what you are trying to do.

If you want to actually delete the original source from the database, you could
simply "edit" it and transform it into the new source, thus "assigning the new
source to all of those places".

If you need to continue the use of the original source, you could a) make a
minor change to the title of the original source, then save it as a new source,
then b) edit the original source to transform it (as suggested above), then c)
re-edit the source you saved in a) to restore it as you wish.

Re: [LegacyUG] Digital Image Naming Standards

2008-07-24 Thread MJMethod
You've had a couple of good suggestions in other notes. My 2 cents:

I use a MRIN-type naming, but most all are in a "MRIN+Surname+Given
Name+type of image" format. The "type" could be various descriptors, e.g.
census,
will etc, it may have a year or date, it may have some other "cue" such as
"wedding of xxx".

Most importantly,
- New images from any source (scans, downloads, etc.) go into a working
folder named
"!not sourced or filed"
- When I work on those images (editing the image name, enhancement,
cropping, etc.), I also decide if this is an image which will be attached to
Legacy or just stored. And, if it is to be attached, I may need to make a copy
of
it at a lower resolution (if I do, I put a "w" after the MRIN # because it
is essentially a "web"-size image).
- Then I move the image. I keep all genealogy images in a directory of
"My genealogy archive" - separate from the "My Pictures" folder (some are
redundant in both). Mine are generally by family name, but some
sub-directories
are Geographic or major events.
- Not everything gets attached to Legacy. For those which are, I move a
copy (or move the "w" version) to another folder which only contains Legacy
images. No confusion or searching for "what did I do with ???".

1. I think you have a problem with your setup or install. I suggest you

The limit on a note is huge. I don't know exactly, but I believe it can go
many pages.

2. A new paragraph is either a) pressing Enter twice to leave a blank line
between paragraphs, or b) pressing Enter followed by Ctrl+Tab for a standard
indent, or c) pressing Enter followed by adding as many spaces as desired.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to record two marriages

2008-07-20 Thread MJMethod
I agree. I have a relative who Married (civil) in Massachusetts. Then a
wedding in the bride's church in Ohio. Then a wedding in the groom's church in
Michigan. As far as I know, only one "license" (Massachusetts), but two other
church records.

I have attached Massachusetts source information to the Massachusetts event,
then included all of the rest as narrative in the Marriage Notes and
attached the other source info to those notes. (I only use "alternate" events
when
there is a question of validity/accuracy.)

Jack,

I've an uncle and aunt who were married twice. They first married in
a civil ceremony in the city clerk's office of New York state. Since
the groom's mother didn't like the bride, they kept the marriage a
secret from the mother for several months. The bride mentioned the
civil ceremony to her parish priest who then married them a second
time in the church in the state of New Jersey. It happens!

As to how I entered it, I went into the couple's first marriage
record and at the bottom of the screen, clicked on the "Add" button
and added the event "Alt. Marriage" where I added the second date and
second location so that both events were shown under the Marriage window.

Two choices, either way you'll have to correct them one-by-one, working in
the Location Master List:

1. Highlight the location. In the Virtual Earth map navigate to the accurate
(or preferred) location. Right Click. Click OK.
[as an aside, when working with a general location like "Michigan" or
"England", I like to position the pin either where the name shows on the map
or
at the capitol city, so I can quickly recognize it.]

2. Highlight the location. Click the Globe (Geo Options Menu). Select Geo
Location List. Search for the location, make your choices, and save.

Re: [LegacyUG] Estimated Locations

2008-06-18 Thread MJMethod
I am a big proponent of such "estimates", for dates and locations.
The examples you give are good and I or others could provide innumerable
other examples.

I find them to be a HUGE value when looking at the screens or reports, when
sending or discussing families with people I may be interviewing, and
especially when doing searches. With the new mapping in V.7, it adds another
dimension.

They won't suit everyone, perhaps especially those who do a lot of website
work or publishing trees to online repositories.

For dates, using "abt", "circa", "est", "bef", "aft" or other qualifiers is
easily understood by the reader. Many sources, even well documented, can
frequently only get you close, e.g., from a census you may [probably] know
that
someone was born in a specific year but even that may be a calculation.

For Locaions: I am a big user of carats < > around anything I have
estimated. Legacy handles them well, although I understand that they may have
an
impact on some Gedcom usage and online repositories.

to do it, but just can't decide *whether* to do it. If I know that, for
example, ancestors were born before 1620 and lived in Massachusetts, it's a
pretty safe bet that they were born in England. By the same token, people
who were born and died in what is now Ontario in the early 1800's were
probably married there. Is anything gained by showing England or Canada
(Upper/Lower, West/East) as *probable* locations or is there a good reason

Re: [LegacyUG] Newbie to Legacy

2008-06-16 Thread MJMethod
I think you're on the right track.

One comment/suggestion:
Legacy isn't really good with large file sizes. If you have photos,
scans, pdf's, etc. that are large (sometimes several megabytes), use a photo
or
pdf product to make a reduced copy. I generally try to ensure that the
"attached" copies are no more than about 500K. BTW, this can also let you crop

images
Keep the original (you want the best possible image at some point for
viewing or printing).

My basic scheme is:
1. Everything new goes in one directory as "research" (with
subdirectories by topic or type or family - your choices)
2. As I work through the research, I fix the file name, add comments or
detail in the file properties, etc., including adding MRIN into the file name
if appropriate. Here's also where I make reduced-size copies, etc.
3. I have an "Archives" directory. A copy of everything goes in here,
including the full size copy. And there are all kinds of images or documents
here that will never be attached to Legacy, but have other value. This is also
a key directory for "backup" when doing a general computer backup; I can
always recreate other uses from here.
4. I have my "Legacy" images directory. I only move copies here that I
intend to actually attach to Legacy, including the reduced size or cropped
images I made in step 2.
5. Attach files to Legacy.

Initially, I had intended to import all my existing files into Legacy but
having given the matter some thought I decided I would do a "clean"
installation and re-enter all my information. Over the years, inevitable,
mistakes and
errors have occurred, so I thought this would be a good time to slowly go
through it all, and make sure everything is correct.

With that in mind I've been giving a bit of thought on how I set it all up
on the computer. I'm no computer wizard (and frankly I've no desire to become
one!), and I've come up with the following.

 *My Documents.

  *Birth.
  *Marriages.

 *Death
*Census (Scans of)
 *  UK 1841
 *  UK 1851
  *etc.
  * Parish Records  (Scans of)

*  Photographs.
  *People.
  * Places.
 *Other.

Before I start any thoughts or comments (and improvements) would be

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Questions about pictures and events in reports and ...

2008-06-14 Thread MJMethod
One option I have used:
Create an event. I used "Picture only" and left all of the Event
Sentence Definitions blank.
When I created the event, I let Description, Date, Location, and Notes
show on the screen. I can enter something for my information, but without any
Event Sentence Definitions they won't print.
Add the picture.
Save.
You get the picture without the "duplicate info".
You may have to move it around a bit in your event list to get it to display
in the right place on the page.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7 - Questions about pictures and events in
reports and event sentence definition

First, a belated Thank you! to the folks at Legacy for the promptness in
which I received my v7 upgrade - it arrived 1 June.

Two observations and questions regarding the new version:

* Options for sentence definition fields for events seem to remain
unchanged. I had hoped to have had the new ability to add the person's age
at the time of the event, as mentioned a number of times in archived
messages. Does anyone know if this is planned when they update the programme
for the Source Converter and other options/fixes?

* On the Family tab, you can add pictures for each individual by clicking
the picture icon, and they can be included in various reports. However,
there is also a picture icon next to the marriage information. However, the
same logic doesn't follow with the picture icon next to the marriage line.
In order to get the picture to print, you have to create an event. When a
Report prints, you get the standard info for the marriage, which again
repeats for the marriage event, i.e.

Dick was born... Dick married Jane... on 1 Jun 2008 in .
Noted events in their marriage were:
Dick and Jane were married on 1 Jun 2008 in XXX...

This seems rather silly, especially when you've no other information to add
to the event. Is there any way around this? Any plans to update this with
the next update? Or do people not find this to be an issue?

Cheers,
Christine

Yes, renumbering MRIN's will throw your paper filing out of whack. Likewise
your electronic documents and multimedia if you have used MRIN's in the file
names.

I did the MRIN renumbering one time, - consciously - a couple of years ago,
as part of straightening up a wholesale mess in some files. It was useful,
but I don't ever plan on doing it again.

Always good to do a back-up so you have a copy "as of" when you send the

You can send a straight copy of the database or a copy of the backup. Your

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7 - Small problem in editing locations for people from...

2008-06-13 Thread MJMethod
If you are directly into the Master Location List, and have located an entry
you want to edit, simply click the "Edit" button below the list. Any edits
here will affect any place it is used, including marriages or marriage events.

If you are simply commenting that you can access individuals but not
marriages, I agree that it appears that way but it really is showing all
individuals
affected -- and the same was true in V.6.
Experiment to demo: In a test or demo file (or in your live file [just
remember to delete this after] -
go to a couple with a blank marriage location. Enter an obvious dummy
location [e.g. "qqq"] and save the location and marriage. Now go to the
Master
Location list and locate that dummy location. You will see that same couple
displayed - and the only place it could come from is that marriage record.
[now you have to go back to the marriage record to delete the location
from their record before it can be deleted from the Location List.]

At least they've given us the ability to edit the individuals directly! :-)

Yes, that's fine if you are in Family View, but if, for whatever reason,
you are starting from the Master Location List and find some location
you want to edit, if it is a location attached to an Individual's Birth,
Baptism, Death, Burial or even an Event, you can click on Edit to get to
the Individual's Information Screen to make your edits.

However, if the location is attached to a Marriage or to a Marriage
Event, you cannot reach that Marriage or Marriage Event directly from
the Master Location List. You have to close the List, navigate to the
Individual and then make the Edit.

There are now 4 types of attachments in Legacy:

The first three show up on the SCRAPBOOK list. And any file that is
attached(linked) via the Picture, Video, or Sound buttons will show up in
this scrapbook list (doesn't matter if the file is ACTUALLY a picture,
video, or sound or something else). But if a file is attached via the FILE
button, it won't show up on the scrapbook list (at least some of mine
don't) - and there's no check box on the SCRAPBOOK page to include them.

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 7 - Small problem in editing locations for people from...

I'm not sure I understand what you are seeking.

In Family view, you click on the person of interest and then you can click
the down-arrow on location to bring up the Master Location list and then edit
whatever you need.
To edit the Marriage, you click in the Marriage area and then you have the
same down-arrow ability available.

One option is to tell it to ignore the problem.
A second option is to use a prefix like "From 13 Apr 2007". Legacy does not

Event (Residence) date is bad
[13 Apr 2007 -]
Event (Residence): This date is not in a format Legacy recognizes. Check the
date to make sure it is valid

I have checked all the tabs to see if there is one that would exclude the

only a couple of entries.

Dede, since cemeteries and churches, etc. are used by more than one person,
generally, it doesn't add tremendously to the Master Location list (although
I do have 1401 locations, so maybe it does). So then you can place the pin
for that cemetery and church more specifically. I wouldn't do residences,
but that is a personal preference.

When you have the map up, place your cursor where you want the pushpin.

I've read the archives and I've read the help files, but I'm still a
little confused about how the mapping and push pins work. If these
questions are answered in one of the new videos, let me know and I

Question 1: If you have a street address for the cemetery, it is
properly entered in the Burial Address field, which is accessed by
clicking the arrow at the end of the Burial location field. When you
put it in the proper place, then Map My Places only finds the location
entered from the Master Location list. It does not find the specific
cemetery.

I have read several suggestions about how others enter this, but if
you have to enter the specific street address for each location, won't
this make your Master Location List rather long and cumbersome? If
this is the only way, I have lots of work to do to get the mapping
feature to work properly.

Question 2: For some reason, the push pin for my parents' hometown
comes up on the same street they live on, only five blocks south. I
have NOT entered their address, so I'm guessing this is just where VE
has decided to put the pin for their town.

It "feels" like we should be able to click on the push pin and drag it
to where we want it to be, but I know that doesn't work. Is there a
complicated reason why that is not an option? I'll take a simple "not
even possible." I don't need a detailed explanation as to why not,
since I probably wouldn't understand it anyway! :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Display of probable date and location in Pedigree View

2008-05-08 Thread MJMethod
For locations: I have settled on using the <> carats. The Master Location
list handles them just fine, and by checking the box in the lower left corner,
the sorts adjacent to its partner. If I need additional detail or
clarification, I'll include that in the notes.

For dates:
I use "Abt" when I have reasonable sourcing, e.g. a year which is based
on an age in a census or marriage license.
I use "Est" when I am making a general guess, such as approximating a
marriage when the woman was age 21 and the husband age 25.
I rarely use "Cal", but I have encountered death certificates with a
"yrs,mths,days" and no birth date.
"Bef", "Aft", "From-to", and "Between" express nothing more than what
they are.
I don't use "Cir", because I can't draw enough distinction from "Abt"
and "Est".

further investigation and support.

So, I use the surety level, text and comments when documenting the
source. I also use the angled brackets <> around the dates and
locations, so they are clearly identified in *most* views (Family,
Descendant, Chronology), but not the Pedigree view.

In the Pedigree view, "Cal" and "Abt" show up for the date ranges
after the individuals, but angled brackets do not. (The option to
display dates in the Pedigree view is turn on.) In addition, when the
Spouse/Child and Sibling Lists are displayed in this view, and I click
on Information tab, the angle bracketed date information is displayed,
but the location is not.

Also, I noted that in the Master Location List, the locations with
angled brackets are not displayed. At first, I thought that the
location was included in the non-bracketed location of the same name.
However, clicking on the "Show List..." button shows that the
individual with the bracketed location is not included.

Any ideas? Thanks.

My approach is to include all sources pertinent to that event.
Collectively they document the date, place, notes, etc.
If you wish, you can include comments in the source detail such as "this

Re: [LegacyUG] Compiling single database from 3 separate Legacy files

2008-05-06 Thread MJMethod
Barrie,
OK. You have multiple Legacy files you want to merge.
- select File (top left)
- move cursor to Import From and select Legacy from pop-up window
- follow the rest of the instructions
- repeat for each additional file

Can I Import (copy?) the whole branch in one action? She has family back to

I could bring them in en masse.

I assume I could then save the composite file with another name, and make

Re: [LegacyUG] Add a NEW person or Link to an EXISTING person.

2008-05-03 Thread MJMethod
Lavern,
As it states, the difference is simply whether you are adding a NEW
person to the database or linking to one which already is EXISTING in your
database.
Example: If you are in the Family tab and you click on a blank child
line, it presents you with four unique choices. However, in other places, such
as clicking on a blank spouse field, it already knows the appropriate sex and
it will offer you two option buttons: "Add a NEW person" and "Link to an
EXISTING person."

person", and wouldn't I select that option?

If I were to add this new person (a relative) and select "Link to an
Existing person",
that selection takes me to the name list where, it seems to me, that
I'd have to select
*everyone* in the family (direct and collateral individuals) to link

Could someone please tell me what I'm missing here?

When an individual has more than 1 spouse, clicking to the left of the
husband or right of the wife boxes, causes the next wife or husband to
come into the Family View.

Clicking to the left of the husbands parents or right of the wifes

I think your problem is straight forward:
- go to your Master Location List
- locate the location you are interested in
- on the right side, click on "Show List"
- tag those records (or print the list)
- then do what you want (e.g. print family group sheets, etc.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Criteria you use to add an individual to Legacy?

2008-01-12 Thread MJMethod
Nothing wrong with your thinking. Your choice.

- Some record as much as possible on additional spouses and their
prior/subsequent families.
- Some go farther on children/siblings of cousins, etc.
- Some also use the database to keep track of "unlinked" people, e.g. you
don't know "if" or "where" they fit in.

And some of it simply depends on how far back you are.

(paternal grandfather) only has about 400 people in it and I thought I was
doing
pretty well. I add direct line ancestors, of course, their siblings, all
spouses and children involved. I also include the parents of any spouses,
though,
and generally just make a note of their siblings. For instance, the wife of
my great-uncle would be included, as would her parents, but that would be
the end of her line. (I hope I’m explaining this so it can be understood.)
I
read questions about downloading gedcoms found online. Perhaps I’m not as
fortunate as others, but the gedcoms I’ve found have only included 3 or 4
people that would be relevant to me. In that case, I import the gedcom into
its own file, and only enter into my main database the 3 or 4 people. To do
otherwise would, to me, create useless clutter.
Is there something wrong with my thinking?

Sherry,

I would expect that whatever scanning software is used, you should be able
to scan the entire flatbed as one image. You may need to 'discard' some of the
individual selections it shows you in Preview mode and then stretch the
remaining dotted outline box to collect what you want.

Considering that it could be a collage, you could have many photos and they
don't all need to be regimented in rows and columns.

Or you can scan multiple pictures into one 'big' one,
not quick or easy, but creating a page for a book,
might be worth the trouble. You would then make it
into 'one' page size photo.

For JLB, Nancy, and others: I had already been using the Options | Customize

pictures on a path, but there was no way to work backwards to find out what

In particular, it integrates neatly with Legacy (without any Gedcom, etc.) .

Re: [LegacyUG] Including more in Ancestor Report

2007-12-10 Thread MJMethod

Barbara,
It is unclear what you are trying to do.

An "Ancestor" report is looking "backward", e.g. from you to your parents to
your g-parents, etc.
A "Descendent" report is looking "forward", e.g. from parents to children to
g-children, etc.
I do not know any way to both simultaneously.

It sounds like you want your direct-line ancestors backward, and all of your
parents' children and g-children, but no other aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

One possibility: Use a "Multiple Lines of Descent" report (starting as far
back as you desire), produce it to an RTF file, then "prune and edit" to
eliminate those who you don't want included.

Re: [LegacyUG] A question about sources and how to format

Michelle,
Just a comment about your reference to "under details I put this the
town, county, ED, , name of household, dwelling #, family #, line #, sheet" ---
For virtually any online source I find (especially Ancestry, various
state databases, obituaries or indexes, etc), I highlight the info, then copy
and paste it into the Source Text or the Source Detail Text. Then supplement
or
annotate as necessary. Saves a lot of typing and carries the exact info you
found online.

Re: [LegacyUG] IntelliShare

2007-11-23 Thread MJMethod

Somewhat familiar with IntelliShare. My sister and I use the same database,
doing a merge several times a year. It is marvelous for reducing the confusion
and effort of merging files from another Legacy file.

The IntelliShare "number" is internal to Legacy, automatic,
behind-the-scenes. I don't think there's any way of seeing it unless you know
Access. I think
it is unique to Legacy and no other gene database.

To my knowledge, it is not exported with a Gedcom, only with Legacy. And it
stays with each person record, whether you export your entire file or only a
subset.

I don't think it has any intelligent information about multimedia. Rather,
its purpose is to recognize that "John Doe" in one file = "John Doe" in
another file, even if there has been a name change, parents change, etc.

Does intellishare compare picture/sound paths as part of the merge, i.e.,

Re: [LegacyUG] Date Format Importance

2007-11-19 Thread MJMethod

1. The format of locations is important for consistency (and to make it a
lot easier to find the right one in the sorted list!). They generally are
entered and viewed from smallest jurisdiction to largest. However, the
city/county/state/country format does not suit every situation (or personal
preferences). There are various discussions in the archives about that.

2. Yes, you should generally be able to edit directly in the Master list of
Locations, including the option of merging locations which should have been
the same (e.g. spelling errors, county omitted, etc.)

3. If you don't add a space after a comma, Legacy will do it automatically.

there a quick way (such as perhaps editing the Master Location list rather

placeholders (I did watch the training video!), should I leave a space between
the
commas, and/or before the known word? For example, often I do not know the

So should I type Springfield,,MO, USA or Springfield, , MO, USA, or

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Photo locations

2007-11-01 Thread MJMethod

I agree with resizing and (somewhat) with renumbering.

1. I created a "My Gene Archives" directory (or whatever you want to name
it) that is separate from "My Pictures" (though some photos may be in both).
This holds photos, PDF, doc, text, and any other items I want to keep for
genealogical purposes.
I use an MRIN File ID and a matching naming structure for
photos/docs/etc., e.g. "123-001 Method Francis 50th Anniv", "123-002 Method
Francis birth
cert", etc.

2. For anything which I want to attach to Legacy, I try to create a
low-resolution copy (e.g. 640x480).
My low-res copy could be "123-002w Method Francis birth cert".

3. I have a Legacy folder in My Documents with sub-folders for Data and
Attachments. The low-res copy is moved to the Attachments folder. I do have
some
subdivisions within Attachments, but that is personal choice.

All of this gives me 1) a stable location for all digital archives, easily
backed up, 2) low res images which Legacy can handle easily, 3) a stable
location for Legacy attachments.

I've been through this and have 1 suggestion & 1 comment.

First, if you have not already made a smaller byte version of pictures for
Legacy, this is a good time to do it. I disregarded the advice to do this
many pictures ago and eventually got to when books & reports with pictures
were such large files that I couldn't zip them small enough to send
ancestor reports via e-mail to cousins.

Second, like Jay I use a lot of folders for pics which make sense to me.
This means moving to a new drive made for a lot of work. I found that
using the function to check picture paths was a lot of help as I got close
to finishing - and made sure nothing was inadvertently skipped.

[LegacyUG] Reducing PDF files

2007-10-24 Thread MJMethod

Does anyone know how I could make a copy of a PDF file which would
significantly reduce the size of the file?

I have a number of PDF files which are several megabits in size. That uses a
lot of disk space for the multimedia files.

Unlike JPG's where you can make copies in reduced size and dpi, I can find
no comparable utility for PDF's. (I do not have the original available to me,
so I can't do anything like scan it at a lower resolution, although I guess I
could print out what I have and then re-scan it.)

Jan,
Are you using Sources? If so, then go to Master Sources, locate the death
certificate sources, for each one (or at least those from Utah, depending on
how
you have them organized) use Show List and then Tag those records [whatever
tag # you want].

Then add that tag to your search criteria. You'll still need two passes in
the search
1. find everyone with criteria 1: the surname
  criteria 2: died after 12/31/1904
   criteria 3: died before 01/01/1955
2. re-search the Search List for
criteria 1: Death location equal Utah
criteria 2: Tag #[whatever you used with
the death certs] equal to Untagged

Re: [LegacyUG] "< >" brackets

Rob,
Count me as one that uses the <> - but only for locations. Dates have
specific options that are understood by Legacy (Abt, Est, etc).
If RootsWeb or other destinations strip the , is that any worse
than leaving undocumented fields blank in the first place?
Using the <> gives me (and my family readers) a quick visual clue that
what I have is not only an "educated guess" but undocumented. That helps with
researching. Example: I may have a source for a marriage in Minnesota, I am
virtually certain that it was in St Louis County, but I don't know if it was
in Duluth.
BTW, I have had no problems with Legacy, GenSmarts, or other programs.
I do have a few places where I use "probably" or other terms, all of
them where I despair of ever finding documentation but want to include
something
to "tell the story", e.g. a wagon train that "probably" stopped in
Montana.

[LegacyUG] How can I find events without(or with) sources?

2007-08-08 Thread MJMethod

It is easy to "show list" of everyone who is using a particular source(s).
But there are many, many sources which could be the source(s) of a particular
event, e.g. Birth, which could be supported by birth certificates, military
records, death records, and innumerable online database indexes, etc.).

But I cannot find a way to search for records which do NOT have any source
attached, e.g. find all birth dates/locations which (do)(do not) have at least
some sort of documentation.

Is that possible?

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing census citations

2007-08-03 Thread MJMethod

Karl,
You've seen other good responses, especially about providing corrections to
"sources" like Ancestry which accept them.

I typically copy/paste source info into the Source Text or the Detail. If
there is a "correction", it is noted as such (e.g. today I had an Ancestry
entry
of "Susie" in the index - which clearly should have been "Cecelia" if you
look at the original).
I also agree with the other comments about those who have Given/Middle
names reversed.
Whether or not such name differences make it into AKA or a Nickname is a
judgement - based primarily on an estimate of whether it was a name which
was intentionally used or merely an accident of either the original record
keeper or the indexer. Even if it doesn't warrant AKA or Nickname, it usually
becomes part of a note which describes possible "confusions" about the name.

My inclination is to use their correct name, but if you do that and someone

Re: [LegacyUG] "Non-standard" locations

2007-07-12 Thread MJMethod

I quite agree with Wendy. The issue is accurate research balanced with
"readability". The only problem I can see with recording "non-standard"
locations
is how you locate/sort them in the Locations Master List.

Those of us in the USA have locations in Canada, Europe, South America, and
Australia. That's my struggle, but as long as I can keep the numerous
London's, Manchester's, Berlin's, and other locations straight, I'll be OK.

And even Legacy has a problem with it's own rules. In their Geo Location
List: look up "DC" as a state (Washington, D.C.) - most of the "cities"
were/are
nothing more than "neighborhoods", and never were organized towns or other
entities, much like the "townlands" in Ireland and elsewhere.

Re: [LegacyUG] how to list townships

2007-06-09 Thread MJMethod

You won't have any problem with reports.

You may have complications with the Geo Location List in Ancestry or add-ons
like GenSmarts. That's not a "problem" unless you want to worry about it.

Just don't forget that there are several things which can happen with
Townships
  1. They continue to be Townships (usually more rural) and are the key
governmental unit within a County, so "twp, county, state, country".
  2. They evolve or convert to a city structure, in which case they remain
the key governmental unit within a County but they are actually the successor.
They may or may not keep the original township name. So they are now: "city,
county, state, country" after a certain date.
  3. They are piece-by-piece absorbed into one or more towns or cities, and
at some point cease to exist.
  4. Both the township and city could continue for the same property. Then
you have to decide what to use, depending on your purpose, including "city,
twp, county, state, country".

And just so they can keep us all smiling, school districts and the Post
Office don't necessarily follow the same borders! :-))

I'm so glad this question was asked. I have been wondering about this for
some time. Many of the states in the Midwest that I search have much of
their data listed by township (US GenWeb sites). I inherited my mother's
genealogy work; now I'm trying to verify it. Fortunately she included the
township names so it makes it much easier to locate the information.

So will reports come out OK if for USA info, I enter city, twp, county,
state and location for other countries as city, county, state, country? I'm
just entering data in Legacy for now; I don't have enough entered to even
try reports yet.

Hi Melanie,
I don't have my file open, but what I think I have done in the past is
in cases where there is a township and a city to write it as such in
the Long form: City - township, county, state, country because this
way it sorts alphabetically with the city. I rewrite it in the short
form to read the way I want it to, in reports. For townships without
cities, I list them as Township, County, State, Country, and in the
short form I use the abbreviation Twp.

Re: [LegacyUG] Cemeteries in death event address (was Sorting Burial Locations)

Melanie -
Yes, just like Burial Notes. However, unless you are editing the report in a
word processor, there does not seem to be any way to restrict the printing of
various detail (phone numbers, notes, etc.) so I am a bit careful about how
much I enter in the "address". It's not bad, but it is clutter. In any event,
this lets my Locations be simplified and consistent with
City,County,State,Country.

You can get to all of them from: Master lists, Addresses, Event. Then you
can tag the ones you want, review the list of records which use the address,
print the list, etc.

use all of those note fields and I have frequently used the "Birth" notes to

for names.

Mitch: I do add comments in Source Details, but unless you print all of the
sources, those don't print in, for example, a Descendent Narrative report.
Also, the notes I want to record are frequently about my logic for why I
settled
on a particular name, or how I found it, or why a spelling change to the
name may have occurred, or why a nickname or AKA was used.

Re: [LegacyUG] Recent Modifications

2007-02-11 Thread MJMethod

Ron,

Not so, unless I'm missing something..

If you edit person A, it updates the "Modified Date" (which shows in bottom
right of Family view).

If you go to another family and edit only the marriage, it affects persons B
& C, and it displays an updated date in the same place.

However, if you do a Search (Individual, modified date, after, date) you
will only result in person A.
If you add the second condition (Marriage, Marr. Modified Date, after, date)
you will get persons A, B, and C.

2006-12-30 Thread MJMethod

One possibility: Use the Publishing Center as if you were producing a book,
only it would be a stack of Family Group sheets in the order you want them.
Your "batches" of sheets are probably fairly stable, so you can create as many

"books" as you want and reuse them.

Hi Everyone,
I have been following the numerous discussions on filing systems with
interest.
I like the idea of the MRIN filing system but for me can see one drawback.
When visiting relatives that how do you take your information with you when
you don't have a laptop computer and your information is filed in different
folders under the MRIN?
I have been filing my family group sheets in folders according to the family

line.
As I am in Australia and most relatives are interested in the ancestors that
arrived and the descendants down so I use the immigrants as the starting
point. If the family is a large one and too much for one folder, I give each
child and their family a new folder. I then file the group sheets in the
order as laid out in a Descendant Report.
One problem that arrises is when printing out a batch of family group
sheets, they print out in alphabetical order and there is no way that I can
see to change this to an order similar to the descendant report.
Does any one have any suggestions or ideas.

I have generally found most such "copy & paste" HTML problems when using
Internet Explorer rather than Netscape. Also, there doesn't seem to be a
consistent pattern between web sites.

I have recently upgraded to Legacy De Luxe, and I have found a problem which
did not occur with the standard edition.
When copying details from websites such as IGI and BMDfree, the details
appeared without HTML coding when entered into source details.
Now they still appear without HTML coding in the source details, however, in
the grey area below, which summarises the details, HTML code appears.
For newly entered details this happens straightaway, but for older entries
the HTML only appears if I look at the details!

Example – :

Marriages Sep 1887
BARKER Gertrude Lily Alverstoke 2b910
HAINES Charles Alverstoke 2b910

Appears in grey box as

Marriages Sep 1887
BARKER Gertrude Lily Alverstoke 2b <>910<>
HAINES Charles Alverstoke<> 2b<>910

On some entries this makes the details almost unreadable. Clicking on
‘Strip HTML makes no difference.
Has anyone got an answer to this?

Re: [LegacyUG] Unlikely but well documented lines

2006-12-29 Thread MJMethod

I agree with Susan.

I have done similar "link" or "placeholder" names. I have several of
them in my database for three purposes: 1) the "disproven" as you've noted,
where you want to report that something is false, 2) the "placeholder" where I
know there is a linkage but don't have names/details yet, and 3) a few
"unrelated" family lines with same names, where I find it easier to handle it
within
one family database rather than repeatedly using split-screen, etc.
Depending on whom I am publishing something to, I may or may not remove
these from the report. And if I wanted to produce a "pure" database (e.g. for
putting up on RootsWeb or Ancestry), it would be easy to do.

I would just leave it as notes, personally, and unlink the incorrect

create a bridge link person that states in given name "This line has
been proven to be untrue." And in the Surname field, put in the false
connection's name as "Surname-Given Name-Father of so-and-so".

Add this bridge person to the false connection's children list, and
make this bridge person the parent of the last proven ancestor. Change
the wording on the bridge person's name to reflect the actual
situation. It adds a generation, but does it matter at this point
since it is unproven?

Dick,

As you have identified there are many ways of entering the data and each of
us has our own preferences.
It is probably worth your while having a look in the LUG Archives as this
has been a topic of many discussions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Data--basic choices

2006-12-17 Thread MJMethod

I agree that the best place to record the 'actual' document/transcript/or
even images is within the Source or Source Detail. This should be a faithful
transcription, extraction, copy, scan image, photo, etc. of the actual source,
perhaps with "comments" (clearly marked as your own) in the appropriate
places. Almost always, the information in these sources is stilted, structured
for
bureaucratic purposes, or even still subject to question or interpretation.

If you then want to provide more readable detail and narrative which will
reproduce in various reports, you can enter it in any of the appropriate
"Notes"
 locations.

I don't want to put words or commitment into Legacy's mouth, but I was
recently told the following because of a specific problem I had: "Currently
Legacy
will only work with Western European fonts. Legacy was developed with
Visual Basic 6.0 and our goal over the next year is to port it to the new
VB.Net
development tool which will allow us to have full Unicode support."

Having done work of this type in Oracle I know that the fields need to
support double-byte characters to work with Unicode. It seems the
note field does support this but not the other fields. Or at least I
can't get it to work.

[LegacyUG] Tracking non-relatives

2006-12-13 Thread MJMethod
Is there a recommended way of tracking various individuals who have either a
long-term or momentary relationship? Examples would be servants, clergymen,
slaves, etc.
For now, I can only see recording various notes and (in some cases) keeping
track of separate families which I can "publish" as a separate chapter.
It would seem even better if Legacy could permit additional kinds of
"relationship" linkages.
