The free solutions are often the best for home users. I
 strongly recommend
both of them... and I don't use Internet Exploder for
 anything... IE is
notorious for weaknesses and viruses with their Active-X
 scripting. Firefox
is free... faster and updated the instant a weakness is
 found. Their user
to user support rocks too... and they have great addons... one called
adaware that strips out all the annoying advertisements that
 pop up that IE
 can't.

I am going to keep the names of AVG free anti virus and Sunbelt

Yep, I had to do a complete reformat hard drive and
reinstall Windows and everything else after Norton 360
  crashed my machine.

Have not had a bit of problem since doing that and installing AVG

  Darlene,

One last thought- what version of Norton are you using? Norton is
known to have caused some problems, it tended to clog up both my
computers which then ran slow- I have heard that it has
 caused some
other problems as well. I had to go to the Norton's web
 site and get
a removal tool to actual remove all of Norton from the computers.
Its funny, why would they have to proved a removal tool if
it wasn't causing any problems. even if you turn it
off it may have embedded itself into your system causing
problems. I'm not a geek just know a lot of them, and
this was their suggestion for you- actually use the removal
tool to get rid of Norton's from your computer. See if
that allows the images to be viewed. If it does than
Norton was embedded in your system, then you will have to
purchase a different anti virus program. Some computers
are not experiencing any problems with Norton- some are,
  like both of mine.

2008-06-18 Thread Darlene Don Hicks
Hi Mark,
Yes, I know you cannot just delete SP3. I was on the phone with Dell for
over 10 hours on Saturday and they removed it and got me a clean install of
SP2. Norton was my final rescue, as they deleted Norton 360 2008 and installed
the Norton I had last year. They first went to Ancestry with just deleting
Norton 2008 and I had no issues. Then they installed Norton from 2007, and
again I had no problems, so it is something with Norton 360 2.0 2008. I
suggest if anyone has the same issues as I had, to go to their website for
help. If you call them it will cost $69 but no charge to do a live chat with a
tech. The tech was very helpful and patient and I was so very grateful! :-D
Thanks Mark for responding to my call out for help! :)

 Hi Darlene

First you Internet provider is not IE 6. That is the web
browser you are using. The ISP is completely different and
should not make any difference to viewing a web page.

While I do not use it, it may be worthwhile to try
accessing ancestry.com with a different web browser called
 firefox2. (mozilla.com/firefox I am pretty sure.)

I am not sure what you mean when you say that I had
service pack 3 and had to delete it. You can not
simply delete SP3. It needs to be uninstalled. Have a
read of the microsoft knowledge base article here
 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249. Of these methods I
prefer using system restore if you have not added anything
 important since then.

I know this is pedantic, but computers are very black and
white, the grey is where they do not work. It is very
likely that any uninstall of SP3 has left odd files on your
 computer.

If you have no luck, and you had no trouble viewing
ancestry.com before sp3 I would consider reinstalling the
OS from scratch, but this will depend on how many
applications you have installed and what backups you have
 and your level of understanding.

The best way is to reformat your hard drive which means
everything on it will be deleted. You will need backups
for everything and anything you want.

While this is a big step, if you have had XP on your
computer for several years it is normally a great way to
clean up your computer. I do my computer every 6-12 months
and it is an enormous headache but it does tend to clear up
all the little issues computers get.

Yes, Michelle, it was a Norton problem. This is what happened and the fix!
But I spent 3 hrs. on the phone today with Norton. I let them access my
computer and we tried going to Ancestry.com with certain things clicked on and
off within the program. Then the tech deleted all of the program and the
images at Ancestry.com could be viewed, once again. The tech next installed
the Norton 360 that I had last year, and I still was able to access the images.
I spent 10 hrs. with Dell on Saturday and Sunday, a nasty e-mail to
ancestry.com yesterday, oops! and my plea to Legacy, and then 3 hrs. today with
Norton, which was the problem. I am one happy camper, now! :-D

Thanks for replying to my plea for help! It was very much appreciated!

 Darlene,
I have not been following this thread but I recall this
 problem being
mentioned on another list and the following solution was
 offered:

The problem seems to lie in the way the browser uses the
 information from
the add-ons. Ancestry's image viewer, etc.

This issue is easily fixed in IE 7 by doing the following:
 Go
to Tools, Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. Click
 on the Reset
button. Then click on the next Reset button. This
 completely resets
everything in IE. Disables all add-ons, cleans the cache,
 cookies, etc. IE
6 and earlier does not have this easy reset
 function. And you must
manually remove everything and DISABLE all the add-ons.

I'm not sure that the problem is necessarily Norton. I
 do know that other
 people
 have similar issues,

 Hope this helps...
 Chick

Yes, that is what I had, on my Dell, also! If your computer is 8 yrs. old
and still running good, you are a very lucky person. My Dell is less then two
years old, and I just got through buying their protective package for a wopping
$270. Nothing they did helped me with ancestry.com. Oh well, now I have three
more call times, I can use before my year is up! They worked for over 10
hours, with me, but nothing solved the problem. Norton 360 is the problem, as
I already stated in another e-mail!
Thanks for your suggestions and willingness to help me solve the problem.

Hi Art,
I love my Dell Desktop, as well. I did have a Dell laptop in the Inspiron
series, but it overheated and finally crashed. This desktop is so much more
reliable, for me! :)

Yes, that is what I had, on my Dell, also! If your
 computer is 8 yrs.
old and still running good, you are a very lucky person.
 My Dell is less
then two years old, and I just got through buying their
 protective package
for a wopping $270. Nothing they did helped me with
 ancestry.com. Oh well,
now I have three more call times, I can use before my year
 is up! They
worked for over 10 hours, with me, but nothing solved the
 problem. Norton
360 is the problem, as I already stated in another e-mail!
Thanks for your suggestions and willingness to help me
 solve the problem.
There are some mighty wonderful people on this list! :-D

If you are having problems with ancestry.com it will help if
you state the brand of processor (intel or amd), the
operating system (XP or Vista) and what service pack you
are on. It has already been stated that an amd based
computer with XP SP3 has known issues with ancestry.com and
it is not the fault of the user. It is also worth
 mentioning which browser and version.

RE: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-17 Thread Mark K
Hi Darlene

First you Internet provider is not IE 6. That is the web browser you are
using. The ISP is completely different and should not make any difference to
viewing a web page.

While I do not use it, it may be worthwhile to try accessing ancestry.com with
a different web browser called firefox2. (mozilla.com/firefox I am pretty sure.)

I am not sure what you mean when you say that I had service pack 3 and had to
delete it. You can not simply delete SP3. It needs to be uninstalled. Have
a read of the microsoft knowledge base article here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249. Of these methods I prefer using system
restore if you have not added anything important since then.

I know this is pedantic, but computers are very black and white, the grey is
where they do not work. It is very likely that any uninstall of SP3 has left
odd files on your computer.

If you have no luck, and you had no trouble viewing ancestry.com before sp3 I
would consider reinstalling the OS from scratch, but this will depend on how
many applications you have installed and what backups you have and your level
of understanding.

The best way is to reformat your hard drive which means everything on it will
be deleted. You will need backups for everything and anything you want.

While this is a big step, if you have had XP on your computer for several years
it is normally a great way to clean up your computer. I do my computer every
6-12 months and it is an enormous headache but it does tend to clear up all the
little issues computers get.

Just a thought...

Are you using Internet Exploder or Firefox?

I have much better luck with Firefox and I'm afraid the last Microslop
security upgrade probably added a bunch of new permissions to Internet
Exploder and it ... um exploded.

I have a much better experience with firefox... and Legacy will use the
routines as needed from Internet Exploder when you use the mapping function.

Hi Allen,
I am using Internet Explorer 6; I deleted IE7 with no better results. If
you can help, I would really appreciate it! You can e-mail me off-list, as
this problem shouldn't be using up any more time on Legacy! I have Norton 360

Re: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-17 Thread MICHELLE CROSBY
Darlene,
One last thought- what version of Norton are you using? Norton is known to
have caused some problems, it tended to clog up both my computers which then
ran slow- I have heard that it has caused some other problems as well. I had
to go to the Norton's web site and get a removal tool to actual remove all of
Norton from the computers. Its funny, why would they have to proved a removal
tool if it wasn't causing any problems. even if you turn it off it may have
embedded itself into your system causing problems. I'm not a geek just know a
lot of them, and this was their suggestion for you- actually use the removal
tool to get rid of Norton's from your computer. See if that allows the images
to be viewed. If it does than Norton was embedded in your system, then you
will have to purchase a different anti virus program. Some computers are not
experiencing any problems with Norton- some are, like both of mine.

Re: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-17 Thread Chick Lewis
Darlene,
I have not been following this thread but I recall this problem being
mentioned on another list and the following solution was offered:

The problem seems to lie in the way the browser uses the information from
the add-ons. Ancestry's image viewer, etc.

This issue is easily fixed in IE 7 by doing the following: Go
to Tools, Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. Click on the Reset
button. Then click on the next Reset button. This completely resets
everything in IE. Disables all add-ons, cleans the cache, cookies, etc. IE
6 and earlier does not have this easy reset function. And you must
manually remove everything and DISABLE all the add-ons.

I'm not sure that the problem is necessarily Norton. I do know that other
people
have similar issues,

Hope this helps...
Chick

Re: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-16 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Darlene,

You really should take this problem to Ancestry for assistance.

They have a Help Desk (click on Help in the top right-hand corner of the
screen when you're at their site), or there are message boards for peer
support (click on Community in the bar at the top of the screen, or go
straight to http://boards.ancestry.com/). From a quick look just now, I
think the board at Topics Ancestry.com Ancestry Site Comments
(http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.ancestry.ancsite/mb.ashx) might be
the one you need right now.

Kind Regards,

RE: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-16 Thread ronald ferguson

Darlene,

This is well off topic and I am only answering on list because this is becoming
an increasing problem, so my apologies to those who know it all.

This has nothing to do with Ancestry or any other software, but is a known
problem between Dell and Microsoft - when SP3 is installed it also affects some
AMD processors and other systems. You need to get rid of SP3 - easier said than
done, and a complete uninstall of the o/s may be necessary. You are best
advised to contact Dell and Microsoft.

Microsoft even publish a tool which will stop SP3 automatically installing for
12 months.

 Ancestry.com!
 To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com

 Hi
I cannot see the images on Ancestry.com, any longer. I had automatic updates
on my Windows XP Service pack two and it downloaded the update with service
pack three. Over the weekend I had all kinds of problenms with My Dell
desktop computer and finally got Dell tech support to help me. I had two
viruses while I had Norton turned off, for 1/2 a day and so the techs
reinstalled Windows and I have service pack 2, now. When I first did
searches, at Ancestry.com, last evening, it accessed the census images fine,
but when I tried it today, it freezes the screen, again! Norton 360 is up and
running and I have no threats. I went into Ancestry image viewer and deleted
it, but it made no change in my access to images. There are probably more
files hidden. Can someone please give me a heads up on what could be the
problem? I payed $300 for another year with Ancestry.com in March and not
getting the census images is a real bummer! Thanks for any and all
 help with this problem!

RE: [LegacyUG] Off topic, but need help, off of this list, concerning Ancestry.com!

2008-06-16 Thread Christine Pearce
Darlene, I'm been having many difficulties with Ancestry images as well,
although my particular problem seems intermittent. It started when they
upgraded the site with enhanced searching.

I don't know if this is applicable to a frozen screen, but could your
Internet Security and/or Block Pop-ups settings be causing this?

You could try posting a query at their message board, but in my experience
you won't get a response. You could call them, but again I find it difficult
to get through. That said, I'm in the UK and their local number seems to be
quite responsive.

Good luck,
Christine

If you are having problems with ancestry.com it will help if you state the
brand of processor (intel or amd), the operating system (XP or Vista) and what
service pack you are on. It has already been stated that an amd based computer
with XP SP3 has known issues with ancestry.com and it is not the fault of the
user. It is also worth mentioning which browser and version.

For clarification, I did not say *all* AMD processors not did I say *all* Dell
