know it by that name. You learn something new every day ! It is a great

The icon is a calendar. I added it to my toolbar. In version 8 it is under the

To: Legacy User Group

I swear that I've used a date calculator within Legacy to convert a date from
an age (like died aged 2 years 10 months and two days) to then calculate a
birthday date but I can't find it now. Can someone direct me to where it is
please?

I am using 7.5 but do have the basic version of 8 installed.

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Pop-up BOXES in FV

2013-12-19 Thread unique64 Riley
Is anyone else sorely missing in v8 the now extinct pop-up boxes for the
children AND the parents that we had in 7.5 in the family view? I am not
talking about the little pop-ups but the big boxes that had the person's full
info, including the places of their birth, marriage and death.

I know there has been some discussion of a work around for the children with
the grid for the children but not for the parents, or using the pedigree view,
but I like the family view.

I had set, "best fit columns" so I could see all the children, and then I could
just hover and peek at the more detailed info without having to change the
screen. Also, being able to hover on the parents was VERY nice.

Just wondering if this feature had a following and if there was a chance it
could be brought back. This one feature alone might be enough for me to keep
working in v7.5.

I agree to bring it back, then you can see all childen at once, and take a
quick peek when you hover if you need to see more. It was also on the parents

RE: [LegacyUG] Can I merge 2 locations in Master location list?

2013-12-05 Thread unique64 Riley
Pam,

Yes, you should be able to use the Combine feature. Click on the location you
don't want to keep, then click on Combine. It will then change to "Combine
With", then click on the location you want to keep and merge with the first
location you chose. Then click on "Combine/With".

Hello, I finally found a format/structure for a Old German Prussian(and current
Polish name) location that gives me the correct map location, but I have over
30 instances of the same town in one family line to correct to the same format;
is there a way to “merge” or convert all of the same “places” to have the same
format (like I can do with the master surname list)? Or, is my only choice to
copy and paste each one individually within the “edit” button? I tried the
“combine” button, but that must be for something else because it didn’t do the
trick. (I’m still in v7.5, awaiting conversion to v8; will it be easier
there?... am waiting to work with the Geobase then). Thank you all for the
great help and taking the time to work through all this. Sincerely, Pam

[LegacyUG] gedcom error

I was trying to create a gedcom for a cousin to use in another software program

the 5.5 gedcom. After it exports 794 people, an error pops up that says
"Address not found". I clicked ok and it continued, and it went up to 1323
people and then did the same thing again. I clicked ok that time and then a
Error 3163 popped up. I looked up the error on the website and it said it was
because a backup zip file was too big. This is a gedcom, but I can't imaine it
was too big when it only hit 794 people. Any ideas? Thanks, Monique

[LegacyUG] Templates for SourceWriter

Many times I like to add a new master source using SourceWriter by typing in

12.53, (online wiki's).

Does anyone know how to find the template for this source and/or if every page
really is searchable? This is the first time I haven't had one be found.

Thanks,

excluding Closed entries from the options. And I only want the Open entries to

entries?

I don’t wish to delete the entries because I want to have them as a record

I want that record as well.

Any suggestions?

I no longer need to tag them.
I want to clear all the existing 7s so that I can use that number for a

So I have brought up the Advanced Tagging window.

I would think that the New England Historic Genealogical Society

  Hi Paula,

Thanks for the response. I started out years ago recording place names as
they are currently, and this led to a great deal of confusion and wild goose
chases when researching - like looking for records in Maine when they were
actually in MA or looking in MA when they were actually in RI. I am now in the
process of changing all to what they were at the time my ancestor resided
there. While Animap addresses the county issue, it does not reveal the
3rd-place location. For instance MA, CT, RI go back to 1643. Essex, Middlesex,
Norfolk, and Suffolk were original counties at the time. Okay, what was the
correct nomenclature for the entire area? It was called the New England
Confederation in 1643. In 1686 it was the Dominion of New England. Animap does
not provide this information. What was it called when my ancestors were there
in 1630? And so on.

I review Wikipedia and other sites for history of various areas, and guess
what -- there are many disparities among the sites as to dates of formation. I
am in the process of building a list, generally from the LDS site, so that I
have only one resource to go by. I am then entering the subsequent location
names in the notes section of the master source location.

This is a great deal of work since my mother's people were all early New
Englanders or in New Amsterdam; however, I believe it will be worth the effort
when completed.

Kay, Lots of discussion on this topic in the archives. Off the top of my
head, search "old location names" or something like that. In summary (as I
remember), most folks use the name of the location at the time of the date
you're entering it with. Some "track" the name changes in the Location Master.
May even be some Animap discussion in the archives.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Early Locations

I'm struggling with locations of my New England ancestors. The first issue
is a person died in 1638 in Cape Cod. This was in Plymouth Colony at the
time. Should I use North America as the overall location?

I have Animap; however, it is somewhat of a pain to use in my opinion. For
instance, I know what county the city is in today. The problem is that it
may have been in several different counties between now and the time my
ancestor resided there. I need to keep clicking backward in time to see the
progression, and in some instances I am back to 1643 and there is nothing
earlier in Animap. The New England Confederation was founded in 1643; the
Dominion of New England in 1686, the Province of Massachusetts Bay in 1692,
etc. Is there an easier means to get from point a to point b?

Thanks,
Kay

Re: [LegacyUG] Need help on make usable lists

2013-01-01 Thread unique64 Riley
Nancy,

I do a location search for vital info for a specific place all the time. This
is how I do it:

Click on Search> Detailed Search.

Then under the "Look for Whom?" Select "Individual".

Under "Where to Look", select "Birth Place".

Under "How to Look", Select "Contains".

Under the column, ""What to Look For" type in the Country here. (I would do a
separate search for each Country.)

Check the box for Second Condition and choose the "or" bullet. Follow the
instructions exactly as above, only change the "Where to Look", to "Death
Place".

Then, check the box for Third Condition, with the "or" bullet chosen again.
This time under the "Look for Whom" column, select "Marriage". Under the
"Where to look" choose "Marriage Place". Follow with the "Contains" and then
put your country again.

Remember, you will have all three lines with the birth place, death place and
marriage place with the same country.

Make sure that the "Clear List before this search" bullet is selected. Click on
"Create List" at the bottom. Look through the people, making sure this is
correct search for what you want.

Click "Print" at the bottom and choose the format for your report.

Follow these instructions again for the other two countries, making sure that
the "Clear List before this search" bullet is selected.

It really is fast and easy, even though it looks like a lot of steps to
communicate the process.

Monique

Subject: [LegacyUG] Need help on make usable lists

  Hi,

I am heading to England, Ireland and Scotland at the end of May for 5 weeks.
Hoping to do some research there on my ancestors perhaps. What would be
helpful is to make a list of all the people in my database that have a Vital
Record event happening in one of these countries so that I am organized with
what I know before I go..

Is there a way to generate a report of all people who was born, married or
died in these countries including when and where?

I tried tagging by location but it's awkward to sort the report.

Does anyone else have some suggestions on how to prepare for this kind of a
trip?

  Any ideas would be welcomed.

  Regards & Happy New Year,
Nancy A. Daniels, Cape Cod, MA

  Thanks David,

I did finally figure out that the %20 meant a space, just took me a while to
reason it out in my head. Yes my file names are probably too long, I will have
to work on that.

  Monique,

I did as you suggested, after I messed up a little. And it worked like a
charm. Had to go back in and change the file names of the ones that came up
with the weird names but got it done in Picture Center.

I still can’t figure out why I am not getting the list messages in my email.
Going to the Archives is a bit of a pain. Anyone have a suggestion as to what
is wrong?

  Thanks for your help.

Re: [LegacyUG] re multimedia files

2012-12-29 Thread unique64 Riley
Donna,

I just copied all my Legacy files to a new computer. After I downloaded Legacy
and restored my family file on the new computer, I went into my original
multimedia files,(on the old computer) under the C drive, Legacy Folder, and
Pictures Folder, (I had Vista and Windows 7 so this is where I kept them). I
then opened each sub folder in my pictures folder and copied the whole lot of
pics.  I then pasted them into the new computers folder, in the same places;
drive C, Legacy, Pictures, etc. so they were in exactly the same place as the
old computer, (the path would be exactly the same). This process took me less
than 5 minutes and everything is fine. I don't know about Windows 8, but if
you can put copy and paste them in exactly the same place they were on your old
computer it would work.

I hope this helps you. Good luck!

  Brian,

I followed your advice and it didn’t work all the way. I got it on the USB
drive, but the program still didn’t recognize all the files. It wants me to do
it one by one. No that is going to take forever, plus it is renaming them
slightly, adding $ in between a lot. I definitely have done something in error
I am assuming. Any other suggestions. Plus why do I have to go to the
Archives to receive my messages?

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do List - How do I sort by category?

2012-10-17 Thread unique64 Riley
You can reach the "To Do List" window 3 different ways.

1. Click on the word "View" at the top of the screen and choose, "View To Do
List". This will give you all the To Do's.

2. Click on the "To Do" picture icon in the Toolbar at the top of the screen.
This will also give you all the To Do's.

3. Click on the "To Do" icon under either the husband or wife in the center of
the screen. This will show you that person's To-Do items, if any. But you can
also use the drop down arrow at the top right to re-categorize the list to All
To Do's.

Sorting by category is achieved by using the different options at the bottom of
the screen. After you have selected which filters you want, be sure to click
the button, "Apply Filter" on the bottom right.

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Measuring distance between two places

2012-10-17 Thread unique64 Riley
Here are the instructions as per the Help in Legacy:

Distance and Bearing Calculator (Deluxe Edition only)

The Distance and Bearing Calculator is used to find the distance and compass
direction between any two points on earth specified by a latitude and
longitude. (See Latitude and
Longitude
for more information on this subject.) The calculator uses great circle
spherical trigonometry to figure the shortest distance and direction between
points.

The Distance and Bearing Calculator is reached by choosing Distance and Bearing
Calculator from the Tools menu. It is also available by clicking the
Calculator button on the Master Location
List,
Adding or Editing Master
Locations
 screen, and
Address screen.

Finding the Distance Between Two Points

To find the distance and bearing from one point to another:

1. In the Latitude and Longitude of First Location box, enter the two
coordinates of the starting location.

2. In the Latitude and Longitude of Second Location box, enter the two
coordinates of the ending location.

3. Click the Calculate Distance and Bearing button. The distance between the
points and the bearing from the first location to the second is displayed below
the button.

(The latitude and longitude must be in the form of degrees, minutes and
seconds. The degrees must be between 0 and 90, if a latitude and between 0 and
180, if a longitude. The minutes and seconds must be between 0 and 59. The
seconds can have up to three decimal places after it. e.g. 681234.293)

Re: [LegacyUG] Does Legacy needs the internet to operate?

2012-10-13 Thread unique64 Riley
Is it true? No. You can still do any work you want on your tree with the 3
exceptions:

1. The Legacy News on the Legacy Home tab wouldn't have the most current news.

2. If you want to sync your tree with new.familysearch.org,(LDS) that wouldn't
work.

3. Any use of Bing maps in the Master Location list wouldn't work.

But besides these 3 items, you can do whatever work you want.

[LegacyUG] Measuring distance between two places

2012-09-03 Thread unique64 Riley
In the Legacy 7 Users guide it states:

"If you have the Deluxe Edition of Legacy you have access to the Distance and
Bearing Calculator. Using this calculator you can figure the distance between
any two cities in your family file that have latitude and longitude
coordinates. To do this, you can highlight the two cities (click on the first
city to highlight it and then find the second city and hold down the Ctrl key
while you click on it. This will leave both cities highlighted) and then click
the button and choose Distance and Bearing Calculator. You can also figure the
direction to travel to get from one to the other."
The problem I am having is in quickly locating the second city so I can select
it. From the Master Location list I can easily locate the first location by
typing it in the "Find" box at the top left of the screen, but how to I quickly
get to the 2nd location? Do I have to endlessly scroll through all the places
until I find it, so I can ultimatley hold down the ctrl key to select it? If I
try to put it in the "Find" box at the top, I lose the first location I chose.

Thank you,

Monique

Create a custom search, or amend the search you were working on, to use
this URL. It will search using the First Middle and surname, birth year
and death year if entered for the person.

I tested it with several people in the Sample Database that comes with

Go to "view", then "master lists", then "location". Click on "options" to the
right, and then on "expand/contract location parts".

Make sure the "all locations in list" is marked under "Records to Change", and
the "Expand Long Location Names and contract Short Location names is marked"
under the "Action to take".

Check the "Add, 'United States' under the "USA Country Names". Click
"Continue" in top right and ta-da, it's done!

Probably, if you haven't deleted or merged anyone. But the best way to tell
how many people are in your tree is to go to the Legacy Home tab, the one all

Re: [LegacyUG] documentation question

2012-08-06 Thread unique64 Riley
Pages 153-155 from Evidence Explained, by Elizabeth Shown Mills, addresses
this. You can open the Source Writer in Legacy and when you go to add a new
master source- type one of the above page numbers in the box, "What kind of
source do you want to cite?" and it will bring up the correct template.
Basically, what matters is what format the personal knowledge came to you in;
an email, correspondence. Section 3.43 on page 155 more fully describes what
you are asking. So if you type in either 3.43 or 155 you will get what you
want.

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinar (research plans)

2012-07-30 Thread unique64 Riley
Paula,

You are correct, (as far as I know anyway), that the actual report would not
print if it is only linked as a pdf or Word document. It would be cited
though. The template is built into the source writer in Legacy, from page 156
of Evidence Explained. But as I said before, you would at least have the
actual research report linked to the person, and that is enough for me. You
could choose to copy some or all of it and put it in the research notes. I
prefer to just link it and I have it saved on my hard drive, and if I so
choose, I can also print out a hard copy to file.

In regards to your second question, yes, it can be exactly what Michelle was
talking about.

Everyone- professionals and hobbyists, can benefit from writing a research or
narrative report. A report can help you preserve your work for yourself or
others, document research results, clarify analysis and support conclusions,
especially in complex cases. It also helps you see where you have "holes" in
your research. Proper citations are included and both positive and negative
searches. I know it does take extra effort to write a full, quality report, but
I feel it pays off in many ways. There are many times that I wish I had
written one after a research session to record my objectives, processes,
conclusions and what I wanted to do next. I do take advantage of the To-Do's
in Legacy, the note sections, and the Source Writer, but a report rounds these
out nicely. I choose to type it in Word format and then I convert it to a PDF
format so I can share it with others that are interested.

I am trying to picture this on the "output" side and having a bit of
trouble---possibly because I haven't done an actual "research report" before.

If a research report is similar to what Michele included in her post; that
is, a pulling together of the indirect evidence to form the proof, and you are
talking about having typed that up (say) in a Word document, then wouldn't your
approach to attach it to the source detail result in having the proof "hidden"
from any reports you might run out of Legacy?
While Michele's original approach of putting the proof in the Research Notes
field allows me to print it in Legacy reports.
  Or am I missing something?

the only ones listed that are of age to have been his parents (the remaining
persons listed in the Bible are James Jr., his wife Lucinda and their
children). James Jr. and Silas were only 3 years apart in age and most likely
brothers. On the 1820 Perry County tax roll, James Sr., James Jr., and Silas
are listed right next to each other.

The one drawback to recording it this way in the research notes is that I
can't footnote each individual fact (you CAN attach multiple sources to the
research notes). If this was in a research report (and it actually IS in a
research report that I wrote) each statement would be individually sourced.

you click on the "file" box. You could create a master source name Proof
Summary, Research Report or some thing else. Or, you can put something in the
research notes and then use the source clipboard that has the report, (linked
to it) under the multimedia tab there. Many possibilities. At least you
would have the actual report with footnotes linked to the person or persons
somehow, somewhere.

Hope this helps.

I frequently have to “prove” a relationship using indirect evidence. I am
going to copy and paste a sample of this from my file. This is in my research
notes in Legacy.

We conclude that Silas Simmons is the son of James Simmons and Ellenor Lee
through indirect evidence. The first known record of Silas Simmons is his
enlistment into the 10 and 20 Consolidated Regiment, Louisiana Militia on 25
December 1814. It is unknown why Silas joined a Louisiana Militia instead of a
Mississippi unit. We do know that this is the correct Silas Simmons (the only
Silas Simmons that served in the War of 1812) because he later filed for bounty
land in Perry County based on this service. There were two other Simmons men
that joined this same unit on the same day, James Simmons and William Simmons.
This James Simmons is, most likely, 18 year old James Jr. and not James Sr. who
would have been 50 years old. We can tie James Simmons, Jr. to his father
through his Bible which still exists. In the Bible James Jr. lists James
Simmons, Sr. and Ellenor Lee “his wife” complete with birth and death dates.
Though James and Ellenor are not listed specifically as his parents, they are
the only ones listed that are of age to have been his parents (the remaining
persons listed in the Bible are James Jr., his wife Lucinda and their
children). James Jr. and Silas were only 3 years apart in age and most likely

  Michele

  Michele,
I agree with what you and Marian, etal, are doing for formal Research and I
do that when taking trips to various repositories.
I may be wrong but I think what Tim was addressing was how to keep track of
the random online browsing moments. I do that as well. I have an Individual or
Family screen open for reference and do searches online leading to who knows
where or what. I try to keep track of these so I do not keep repeating the same
search over and over.
Of course I record what I need to do in a ToDo list for follow on research.
Maybe this isn't the best approach but it's what I do.

[LegacyUG] how to uninstall and install LEgacy

2012-06-21 Thread unique64 Riley

  To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com
  Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2012 8:14 PM

  Brian,

Here are the recommendations I make for a complete uninstall and
reinstall which preserves your data and other files you've saved in
  the c:\Legacy folder and sub-folders.

After you uninstall Legacy, with Windows Explorer look in the
C:\Legacy folder or whichever folder you had Legacy installed in.
Within this folder you will find several files remaining that you will
need to delete. Carefully delete the following files with the file
  extension of:

  .usr (defined as "USR File")
  .exe (defined as "Application")

DO NOT delete any of the folders like the Data folder, Doc folder
Picture Folder or Web Folder as these folders hold your data and you
don't want to accidentally delete your family file or pictures.
Don't delete any reports you may have saved to the main Legacy folder
nor should you delete the Legacy*.lic file. All the other files
should be deleted. You'll need to reset your preferences after you
  reinstall.

Download the latest build of the Standard Edition from our website by
clicking on the Download menu button. If you left the Legacy.LIC file
as instructed, your Deluxe features will be unlocked.

**When you reinstall, make sure that all other programs are shut down
and your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is disabled.**

  Sincerely,
  Sherry

Is there any way in the "All To-Do's" list to distinguish how they were each

I agree and think like Jenny on this one. There didn't seem to be a question
in my mind as when I clicked on Individual To-Do's that I wouldn't see all of
them for the whole file, like in the All and General categories. So knowing the
limitations of the program, this probably does solve my first problem that I
wrote about on the 25th of May.

The mystery that still remains is that all my General To-Do's have disappeared

Hmmm... how are you viewing the To-do's? If I am in Family View, and click
View>To-do List...>
then a window appears that has the header, "To-Do List - All (283)" If I
change the drop-down box at the top of this popup window, just under the header
bar from "All To-Dos" to "General To-Dos" I get "To-Do List - General (8)" in
the header.

If I change the drop-down box to 'Individual To-Dos" I will only get listed
the To-Dos for the active person being displayed in my Family view; sometimes
none if he/she doesn't have any.

Otherwise, I have to run To-Do Reports to get a count of total Individual
To-Dos and even then I just get the report, not an actual count of Individual
To-Dos. How do others get this count for total Individual To-Dos?

I have my To-Dos set to All Categories, All Localities, Open, Closed, all 3
Types, Tagged & Untagged, and all priorities on the Filter Options. And this
same popup window shows "Viewing Unfiltered List" over on the right just below

Glad for me I'm not the only one, means there really could be a universal
problem that need some attention, though sorry for you! Did you read that I
have now lost my general ones I had from last night? Can't seem to locate them
anywhere!

I think there is something wrong with To-Dos because I just looked at
mine and no Individuals show up when I select for that, but if I select
for General I get 39 and for All I get 69. There are 39 General and 30
Inddividual so the maths is correct, but Individuals are just not
showing when they should. It's not any filtering because I have
selected to have all categories, all locations, open & closed, tagged &
untagged and all types and all priorities.

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do Tasks

2012-05-25 Thread unique64 Riley
Thank you, this might be part of the first problem I had. I stayed up late and
work up early, so now I can't say for sure what I have done, since I have tried
so many things. But as of this morning, still can't find the General To-Do's,
(such as search film #1,000,000) that were there last night. Any ideas on
that? Thanks.

  Monique,

As the title suggests, the All To-Do’s cover the To-Do’s for everyone in the
database. It’s a quick catch-all like the first option in the To-Do Report. If
you click on each To-Do, the first tab details who the task is for.

Birth location DOES NOT CONTAIN United States

  Death location CONTAINS United States

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do suggestions?

2012-05-13 Thread unique64 Riley
Jackie,

I love the To-Do list. I live several hours from Salt Lake and go several
times a year. When I am working on my family file I inevitably find things I
want to look at in Salt Lake. I will take a moment and use the Family History
Library Catalog to look up a book or film# and then I add it to the To-Do list
for that individual, filling out the locality and making sure to add the
repository of the Family History Library in Salt Lake. Then, even with a
moment's notice, I can print off all the To-Do's that include the Family
History Library for the repository (on separate sheets of paper, like was
already mentioned) and I am ready to research! You can also print list by
locality. I always take more than I think I can accomplish, so if I meet a
dead end or problem, I still have things to work on.

One mistake I have made in searching books (or films), is that some had
recently been digitized and put on line at
www.familysearch.org in the catalog or in Google
Books, or some other site. Verify this before you go so you don't waste
precious time looking at something in Salt Lake that you can research at home.
Films are added practically every week on familysearch.org.

You generally pull your own films. I wait until I get home to cite my sources
in Legacy- using my handwritten notes from the To-Do sheets and a copy of the
original, (I always make a copy, usually a digital one, and a paper one for a
backup), so take a flash drive.

Go to the books first, since they do not loan them out. You can always order a
film from your nearest Family History Center if you don't get to it. I think
the price is around $7.50 to rent it for 3 months, depending on where you live.
You can order these online at
www.familysearch.org/films. You can see a
list of centers on www.familysearch.org also.

Have fun! I am sure you have checked the hours and days you will be there,
https://www.familysearch.org/locations/library_hours.
Remember, they are closed on Sunday, and open 8- 5 on Mondays, and 8-9
Tuesday Saturdays.

Good luck!
Monique

I've just made reservations for a few days in Salt Lake City for some
intensive searching at the Family History Library. It is hard telling
when or if I will ever get the chance to do this again so of course I
want to make the best use of my time.

I've never really made full use of the To-Do list but this seems like
the perfect opportunity to use it as I make up a list of filmstrips and
books I want to check - and for whom with the date range to check. I
note there is a sourcing opportunity as you make out the To-Do list. Do
you fill those out before you find anything in those sources? Do you
list your items by the person you are hoping to find - or by the book or
item with an attached list of those who should be in it? And is there a
way to "tag" those that I need to have them pull from their vault so
that they are waiting when I get there?

Pitfalls - and tips to maximize my utilization would be appreciated.

  Jackie

[LegacyUG] Adding children's birth places to family view

2012-03-03 Thread unique64 Riley
Is is possible to view the children's birth places in the family view screen
across from there names? It would be so handy to see them all at once to
determine the family's locations at different times instead of having to go and
view a Family Group Record. It I set the columns to show only 5 children, it
would fit across.

Thanks,
Monique

I forgot to copy the chat notes from todays "Ten Brick Wall Tips for Beginners"

Thanks,
Monique

[LegacyUG] online index citation

2011-12-13 Thread unique64 Riley
How would one correctly cite an online index of vital records? The info was
extracted and published by a Historical Society. I have searched EE, by Mills
and can't seem to find a good fit.

Thank you.
