Quite right too.

It opens for now, and maybe my satellite internet was down for a few
minutes, or my power went off for a few minutes and shut down my
router.

However, if I read this correctly Beamer is fine, even good.

Thank you Kornel.

The problem is solved, and it was my error. I changed the graphic I was
using, and changed its name.

The error message was too short, to point out that the graphic by the
previous name could not be found, because the name had been changed.

I had checked the path was correct. The graphic no longer existed.

Sorry for the noise.

Library directory: /usr/share/lyx
User directory: ~/.lyx/
Qt Version (run-time): 5.15.2

Package pdftex.def Error: File`/home/lyx/my-templates/graphics/

Does anyone have any ideas, they would be appreciated.

Replied thus:

Thank you el, for that suggestion.

The solution was as Chris suggested:
\ThisCenterWallPaper{1}{path_to_wallpaper} in an ERT. I didn't
have the "This" in my ERT and therefore it produced the
wallpaper on every page of the document. Not a bad thing, but
in certain documents, just to have it on the first page was
desirable.

Thanks Chris,

That has done it. Great.

I always use \thispagestyle{empty} in the first page.

I attempted to use \ThisCenterWallPaper{.43}{path_to_wallpaper}

However, I must have done something wrong, because it didn't work. I
tried so many things, in the end. I might have put that in the preamble
instead of ERT. I don't know?

Wallpaper on first page only........

2021-05-05 Thread Charlie

Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has a way of creating a
wallpaper image on the first page of a document only?

I use ERT: \CenterWallPaper{.53}{graphic desired}

However, it places the image on every page of the document. Usually use
it that way, but in some instances it would more desirable on only the
first page.

Have tried various methods found on the NET to have it only on the
first page. No joy unfortunately.

TIA,

That is correct,

On my Debian Bullseye system I find:

en.dict
en_AU.dict
en_AU.exe
en_GB.dict
en_GB.exe

And others.

Not all have my added words in them, some of these files are empty.

I think the GB Great Britain and US, USA dicts are when I used a
different language and entered my own words and spellings.

> > de_DE.dic  de_DE.exc  de.dic  de.exc  en_GB.dic  en_GB.exc

Maybe if you open these files you may find the words and the "in use"
dictionary you seek?

Hope that helps,

Replied thus:

Thank you Paul,

Under:

"Cursor, mouse and editing functions" I find:

quote-insert "
quote-insert inner Alt+"
quote-insert outer auto plain Ctrl+"

Lyx certainly doesn't obey these.

Don't know how to modify the latter one to just have ["] as the first.

I may have to delete the key to make that work, but am unsure if it
hits the fan that I can get it back, or if it will obey that shortcut
as it doesn't the first one?

Thank you for pointing me to this. Have never had cause to look there.

Thoughts from my Keyboard:

Hello Everyone,

Using LyX Version 2.3.5.2 Debian Bullseye [testing] upgraded.

In a document attempted to use double quote marks " by Shift + " keys,
and only single quote marks ' were placed.

Read something on the net regarding Ctrl + " which didn't work.

So tried Ctrl + Shift " which did. I haven't come across this before
and wondered if it is my keyboard or is this what LyX does now? If the
latter, where can I read about such changes in the future?

Thank you,
Charlie

Responded thus:

Am probably speaking out of turn. Maybe the important word is
"compile". If so please ignore this, because it is just noise.

At the risk of bringing the devil to the door:

I have used LyX for so many years with so many Debian versions, Buster
and Bullseye at the moment, many before that. Have to admit that it
has always installed successfully from the Debian repository, each
time. Never had to do anything special with QT.

Always worked straight up, and with a little tweaking of paths, locked
into all LyX documents of which there are thousands. on a new
internal, or external hard drive.

Why do you need to "compile" it when using Debian? I am interested.

About the Save popup window.......

2019-05-10 Thread Charlie

Hello LyX Users,

Using LyX Version 2.3.2 - Debian Buster [testing] and FVWM

So this might be a feature that has yet to be included again, or not,
so just curious.

When using LyX previously when "Crtl + S" or "Ctrl + Shift + S" to
save a file was invoked. It supplied, on the toolbar across the top of
the window that popped up, a small box that said "Template".

That doesn't appear any more. I am unable to find how I might place it
back by looking through "Preferences". Cannot identify what I must
enable to return it to that place.

So thought I may get a hint here. Maybe it has been removed forever. To
know that would also be helpful. Allowing me to cease looking for it
whenever a new thought in the attempt to find it occurs.

TIA,
Charlie

I think LyX is marketed correctly as a document creator.

If you have time and are so inclined, you can create any kind or sort
of document with LyX. Save the template for future use and there it is,
almost magic next time. If needing anything at all, a few tweaks.

Many people say they just don't have time or can't be bothered to muck
about, or reinvent the wheel, trying to get some things to work with
LyX. Better, easier, faster to use another program that someone else
has had time to muck about with to get working.

I think that's true. But most document types, which are not very
extensive, that I require, can be or have been created with LyX by
someone else or myself, and tweaked as needed for each purpose. Very
often and graciously helped by those on this mailing list.

Be well,

Thank you Daniel.

Clicking on either list view or detail view once or twice just brings
it or from one to another. Right clicking on the directory doesn't
allow me to do anything.

Clicking on list vies does show **two** columns in the window. However,
the individual, single files are the first, at the top, instead of
under the directories. Which have always been on the top.

The detail view delivers a single column, the individual files are still
shown at the top instead of below the directories.

Ce la vie. I think I will just have to live with it.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Stay well,

Thanks Daniel,

Can't find "sort by type".

Using LyX Version 2.2.2 Qt Version (run-time): 5.7.1 Qt Version
(compile-time): 5.7.1

on

Linux 4.9.0-6-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.88-1+deb9u1 (2018-05-07)
x86_64 GNU/Linux

Using fvwm.

The file manager does not have this problem with the directories

There is another thing not working with LyX as well and has been so for
many months. That being the scroll bar is not seen till F7 is pressed
for spell checking, then the scroll bar appears and remains.

Will probably just have to live with these things.

Weird directory, different order of templates...

2018-05-21 Thread Charlie

Hello Everyone,

In my templates directory when opened with a file manager, my
directories have always been and still are on top, and below
them the various individual files in that directory. That has
always been in LyX as well.

Suddenly, the opposite is true in LyX, my directories are at the bottom
of the directory I open, and the individual files are at the top, so I
have to scroll down to get to the directories.

I imagine I have probably used a some obscure keyboard shortcut to have
this happen, but I have trolled through these and am unable to find the
one that does this. If that is actually the cause.

Would appreciate any advice.

TIA

Sorry, forgot to time it but it was downloaded fairly quickly.

Due to our isolated area am on satellite internet which is pretend
broadband.

Downloaded from Australia from home.

Speeds were from a start of 1.4 MB, sped up and toward the end of the
download reached 2.7 MB, but mainly around the 1.6 - 1.8 MB speed.

Tried it again after a few minutes to time it. Only allowed a few
minutes to do that and the speed never reached higher than 746 KB so
killed it.

Hope that helps.

It is long indeed, but it works. Though I'm not canvassing for it, just

As an aside, using all the other options provided in this thread. The

Picked up somewhere, from the net or maybe here on this list, years ago,
and used constantly in the preamble of any document constructed with
LyX, is this:

\renewcommand{\UrlBreaks}{\do\/\do\a\do\b\do\c\do\d\do\e\do\f\do\g\do\h\do\i\do\j\do\k\do\l\do\m\do\n\do\o\do\p\do\q\do\r\do\s\do\t\do\u\do\v\do\w\do\x\do\y\do\z\do\A\do\B\do\C\do\D\do\E\do\F\do\G\do\H\do\I\do\J\do\K\do\L\do\M\do\N\do\O\do\P\do\Q\do\R\do\S\do\T\do\U\do\V\do\W\do\X\do\Y\do\Z}

Can that be shortened and still work. No idea, but it has done the job
for may years and in many different document classes

It may help you. It may even have someone who understands it find a
shorter way to use it, or another command that will do the same thing?

Happy new year, if you go in for such a thing.

This could very well be the case. I wonder what corruption it might be.

Yes, Sorry. should have been clearer. I go into webmail of my Internet
Service Provider and the .pdf created by LyX has the WARNING [below]
message before opening.

I created the .pdf and sent it to my account on my Internet Service
Provider.

There is a option to "Open Anyway" This is selected and the .pdf is
opened and is as it should be. Looks good.

Okay, I will remove the graphic, sorry. Done.

I also sent the .pdf as created by the LyX converter on my Debian
stretch system [as above] because on your system it also might be seen
as a sample.bin rather than a sample.pdf?

Both Okular and Evince open the document as a .pdf and don't question
it.

Look; it's really just a thing that I thought was a bit weird and
imagined that someone else had this problem with a .pdf constructed by
a LyX converter?

Thanks for your time, but obviously it's nothing.

.pdf detected as suspicious because it registers as .bin........

2017-05-29 Thread Charlie

Hello Everyone,

LyX Version 2.2.2
(Monday, 10 October 2016)
Built from git commit hash
Library directory: /usr/share/lyx
User directory: ~/.lyx/
Qt Version (run-time): 5.7.1
Qt Version (compile-time): 5.7.1

 Up to date Debian Stretch

I have a little problem with my ISP.

Created a LyX file and then used the two eyes button to convert it to
a .pdf.

My ISP says:

WARNING! This attachment is suspicious because its type doesn't
match the type declared in the message. If you do not trust the
sender, you shouldn't open it in the browser because it may
contain malicious contents.

Expected: application/pdf(.pdf); found: application/octet-stream(.bin)

It asks to open anyway, and it opens as a .pdf file just the way it
was created?

A small sample attached.

Any ideas?

TIA
Charlie

Not certain if I know this is what's required: LyX Version 2.2.2
Debian Linux testing.

I can just highlight text in a LyX document. Just pressing, at the same
time, left and right mouse buttons, can paste into xterm.

Something that does happen on a couple of blog sites, is, if directly
copying from text from LyX, causes it all to be seen as a hyperlink? No
biggie though. Just copy it into a text editor and paste from there.

Don't know if that helps.

Unable to open file........

2017-04-07 Thread Charlie

Hello All,

I have obviously made an error creating this file in 2007 and now I'm
unable to open it.

This message in Lyx:

/home/charlie/lyx/rec-reserve/letters/shire/07-08-shire-funding.lyx is
not a readable LyX document

In a text editor the message is:

The file
/home/charlie/shire/07-08-shire-funding.lyx||07-08-shire-funding.lyx
was opened with UTF-8 encoding but contained invalid characters. It is
set to read-only mode, as saving might destroy its content. Either
reopen the file with the correct encoding chosen or enable the
read-write mode again in the tools menu to be able to edit it. [end
quote]

Then I get this:

48> <234575E8A4EDC1B14EE078D78DCA5E48>] >>

startxref

291216

Dozens of these numbers

trailer

<< /Size 180

/Root 178 0 R

/Info 179 0 R

/ID [<234575E8A4EDC1B14EE078D78DCA5E48>
<234575E8A4EDC1B14EE078D78DCA5E48>] >>

startxref

291216 0 n

%%EOF

More numbers.

I attempted several encodings with the text editor but no joy. The
numbers changed a little bit but not a great deal.

Just a question here. One of the reasons use LyX is because I thought
any LyX file could be opened in a text editor and the contents rescued?
Now I wonder? I assume that I will lose some file and their content
anyway?

It doesn't matter if no one can help me with the problem. However, I
would like to know if I will lose old LyX files, be unable to open them
as time goes on and LyX evolves?

TIA

Stay well,
Charlie

No problem. Please, no apology needed, put it all together to view the

There has just been a bit of discussion on the Debian User

breaks the URL.

  From my keyboard:

   Hello el,

No. That's how they are. I just placed the sizes into the Height
and Width locations as they are presented.

See attached. This is obviously wrong.

Are you suggesting that height actually means width and vise versa?

Height means the width of the page?

You are quite correct.

That works in fact. It would seem the height of the page is the width
of the page if you indicate "landscape".

How confusing is that, for me at any rate. But then I'm not clever, so
it's counter intuitive, for me at least.

So the height remains the height if you turn the page with the
landscape incantation.

Okay, thank you for your help. It's much appreciated. I will try, when
I have time, to leave it as portrait and just put in the dimensions. Not
use landscape at all.

Again, thank you,

Wow!

I just checked the document and it was 17.78 cm height and 22.86 cm
wide. Not the other way round.

But you reckon it was 22.86 cm hight and 17.78 wide which would be
portrait? That's weird.

Maybe others might quickly look at that document and inform me that
they see what you see as well. That would mean my system LyX is really
wrong and it may have to be purged and reinstalled?

I did specify landscape, but I suppose you saw that when you looked in
the Document->settings->Page format->orientation

Well there you go. I wouldn't use adobe acrobat reader fortunately. But
I might test it with that on a friends machine.

Thanks for your input.

Quickly did this as I had time, but previously only did in full page
pictures. This time just text - please see the custom size.

Quickly tried it in Memoir and Koma- article. Result the same.

With a full page picture, landscape the picture goes out past the right
page, with the text landscape it actually pulls it into the portrait
boundary?

PDF (graphics) -> EPS = pdftops
PDF (pdflatex) -> PDF (cropped) = pdfcrop
PDF (pdflatex) -> PDF (lower resolution) = python
PDF (postscript) -> postscript = pdftops

And more of the same.

No matter. I can work round it, I just thought there might be a better

Landscape document..........

2016-07-13 Thread Charlie

From my keyboard:

Using Debian testing [stretch]

LyX Version 2.2.0

Qt Version (run-time): 4.8.7

Qt Version (compile-time): 4.8.7

Trying to write a document in landscape mode, but when I convert it to
a .pdf file with Okular.

It presents with portrait and runs off the right of the page. Even if I
specify the custom height and width of the pages.

To rule out Okular I have created the file as landscape in LibreOffice
and it showed up as predicted with Okular. Tried both with evince. Lyx
file showed in portrait mode .pdf in both. The LibreOffice showed as
landscape as it should.

To make it work in Lyx had to place: \usepackage{pdflscape} in the
preamble and [ERT in document] \begin{landscape} and \end{landscape} at
the end.

Can someone tell me the right way to do this?

Thank you.

Very old, because I read it on the internet years ago as the way to do
it.

So still use it in the Latex preamble of on some document templates.
Works for me. There may be a better way of course? I just don't know it.

  From my keyboard:

   Hello Stephan,

Thank you for your help. Had I known I should look into my
~/.config directory for enchant, I would have been right.

Joe had the answer and shared it. So I found the word and removed it.

My problem was not a big issue, however, just annoying to think I
couldn't grub it out when I checked my ~/.aspell.en.pws file even
before I posted my question.

Thanks both of you.

   Hello Joe,

That does help. It's the answer. Thank you very much for taking the
time to supply it. Very much appreciated. Have removed the word. Wow.

No fictitious words in that email. :-)

For some reason I seldom think to to look in .config for various things,
unless prompted to do so. A mental block, something to do with age,
though I don't wish that to sound like an excuse.

  From my keyboard:

   Hello Stephan,

Here you have the screenshot. Did I say I was using Debian
  Jessie (testing)?

Which of those commands in the drop down menu allow me to delete a word
word that I used several reboots ago in my added word list. It's sort
of my last hope. [see below] But I can live without getting that word
removed.

I did that before by the way. Checked the drop down menu, but didn't see
which entry to try as explained in my email.

There is no .dict in the whole of my /home directory.

My spellchecker is Enchant.

So, just to be certain as I could be. Ran a search through the entire
hard drive, all directories, and came up with plenty of .dict - 94 in
fact, but none that showed me where I might find the file I need.

I'll just have to leave it as it is unless that drop down menu holds
the key.

Thanks anyway,
Charlie

I used the ordinary F7 spellcheck option to spellcheck and then add the
word.

I see that if I highlight the word I want to remove, I get a different
dialogue. But accept or reject change isn't what I want. I would like
"keep added word in dictionary" or "remove added word in dictionary" or
something to that effect?

I want to remove a word I placed into the dictionary a couple of
hours ago.

I went to /usr/share/hunspell/ to the dictionaries there, but that
appears to be the list of words used, not the added words. I looked for
the word I misspelled and added by accident, but it wasn't there.

I don't know where my "added to dictionary" words go? That would be a
help to know. I could ten go in and edit the file.

So when I read about the way to remove a word from the dictionary, I
thought I would give it a larrup.

So far no luck.

Thanks for your reply. I won't send a simple file with one word.

Be well,

Charlie

Dated in 2012:

You can remove an item from your personal word list with LyX.

Place the cursor inside the word you want to delete and activate the
context menu (right mouse button). The context menu contains an item to
remove the word from your personal dictionary.

It doesn't work for me. Did it ever work? When was that feature removed
and if anyone knows why? Or is it something that I'm misinterpreting?

Thanks Paul.

I didn't think of that because when I typed into an email or text
editor, which I tried, they all typed as normal, no delay. So I
imagined it wasn't a system problem in that it affected typing,
delay time to keyboard the CPU working too hard, as such.

I also have a monitor on the desktop right from boot up, that shows me
that and more

But will try that next time it occurs, just to see anyway. However, now
that it has cleared itself, I imagine that for this Debian testing it's
done.

In this instance it cleared after a reboot today.

However, every Debian testing this slowing of keystrokes showing on the
monitor happens in LyX. A couple of testing versions ago, I recall that
it cleared and then did the same again. So twice for that testing
version? Not correctable by reboots.

I don't think it's LyX because there wasn't an actual LyX upgrade. On
another laptop, using this version of Debian testing and LyX, I expanded
the TeX files I required a couple of days ago, Monday, and it didn't
show the slowing behaviour either? It's not a big deal.

Not certain this is the answer because I haven't tried it. But in ERT:

\begin{fullwidth}

And between these two ERT commands place your full page float

Answering my own question;

Found out how to use landscape in certain sections:

using ERT in Latex Preamble \usepackage{lscape}

Then in the document \begin{landscape} where required and
\end{landscape} where finished.

Tufte book/handout question.......

2015-09-03 Thread Charlie

From my keyboard:

I received a copy of a book of poetry recently and the page format
appeared to be a Tufte book or handout layout in landscape?

If it wasn't a Tufte layout then it was another layout in which
sidenotes were possible?

I'm not familiar with latex so it may have been a layout crafted
through that discipline.

I just thought I would put it out there to see if anyone knew how to
create a Tufte layout in landscape. Reading the Tufte information it
seems that landscape is not supported.

Not clever enough to find the answer myself.

In the preamble: \date{whatever and however you want the date look
like}

and you will have the date placed as it would be in the document.
Not tried with amsbook but works for all others.

I don't use windows, but it seems that you don't have the layout file
for the article class.

Apart from that I have no idea. You say you have purged and reinstall
miktex which is required in windows?

Maybe purge miktex and and reinstall it again?

See all the errors in the above, instead of document, it should be
"document name" and instead of the in some instances it should be
"then".

I'm late coming into this but I wonder if you think you have deleted
the spaces or have in actual fact. If you copy and past your document
into a text editor it might show up the space if you move your cursor
through it.

Otherwise just check that you're not using some forbidden character in
your document that might show up as a space.

Probably not much help. But if I have ever had such an error [not for a
long time] I have changed the document name to one word, just to see if
it loads then. If it does, the rename it as desired typing it carefully
and try again.

I have had a great deal of help from Jean-Marie Pacquet with my
problems tweaking the Koma letter environment. I will attempt to pass
on his wisdom.

Where you see “Sender name” in the Koma letter template place your
graphic, or your other entry and then move your graphic accordingly,
maybe using Ctrl+space as often as you require.

In the footer you may have to do much the same.

I see you have had some good advice from Jean-Marie on your request
last time.

Prior to using the Koma-Script letter template, I rolled my own letter
template with a plain Koma-Script article page and just placed all the
elements where I wanted much like suggested above for placing the
graphics.

I have also created a graphic with the GIMP with all the writing, with
the font I wanted and graphic placed accordingly and just inserted that
into the “Sender name” area.

Not much help, but maybe a start to what you need.

single frame. Not realising that double frame is a box within a box.

Allow page break in boxes........

2014-09-17 Thread Charlie

Hello Everyone,

Using Debian Jessie, LyX 2.0.6. But even Wheezy and before that.

I just read this:

http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.editors.lyx.general/63861

The above exchange seemed weird, because I have never had any type of
box in Lyx that allowed page breaks? Even a frameless box, which is
hardly a box at all?

Maybe I'm missing something.

The "Allow page breaks" option is always greyed out. If I use 100%
column or less.

Maybe this is just the case in koma-script pages?

Or, is something missing here?

Please note I am only curious, as when I've need a page break in a box,
just create another box.

Thank you Jean-Marie,

The first example you pointed me to on page 178 works, and I was working
on tweaking it, and then I saw you had sent this email, which works
perfectly.

I feel like such an idiot. My only excuse is that I had looked on the
net and through other documentation that I didn't fine that reference
in the scrguien.pdf.

It's not unusual for me to go the hard way first.

I did look through the scrguien.pdf that you have directed me to in the
past and I've got in my LyX information file, but maybe I was already
overloaded with footnote information? I really have no excuse.

Anyway, as ever, and as previously thank you for your help and taking
the time to create the result. It's much appreciated and works
a treat.

Thank you once again.

Thanks Ross.

I have the header covered and the rest of the text doesn't do anything,
though left the text in the \lfoot and added text into the \cfoot and
the \rfoot.

There was no output at all.

I think that would work in an article template but not in the letter
one. I actually tried several variations of this and came up blank or
received error messages from some attempts.

Thank you.

Footer in Koma letter - \lfoot - \cfoot - \rfoot

2014-06-23 Thread Charlie

In:
Debian Jessie
using:
Lyx Version 2.0.6

I wanted to put a horizontal line and beneath it a custom footer, that
has the three elements:

\lfoot - \cfoot - \rfoot

So that I can place three different names and address details onto the
first page of the document.

I have googled and I have read custom header and footer documents as
well as .pdf files that tell me a great deal about headers and footers
and even used a footer file that was from the wrong KOMA script or
something and was chastised for attempting to use it by LyX.

Looked through my DIN.lco and every place possible where tweak might
be made. I never realised there were so many LaTeX sites that had
something about footnotes on them.

After futie attempts have had a million error messages and openings that
conflicted when I used "fancy" instead of default, and on and on.

Tried longtable and multirow, footnotesize and just about everything
that was suggested in all my readings with different parameters and I
have given it best. So I am here again.

The one thing I haven't done, is create my own template to do what I
want rather than use the letter template. In the past I used a template
I made myself, but it was just created from a KOMA article template, and
I think when I discovered the letter template I liked it better? But
can only imagine that's why I changed. Why else?

Anyway it's done my head in, and I realise it's laziness in a way
because eventually, maybe a year from now I'll read something that puts
it all together and I'll be able to do it. Or maybe never and accept
living without it.

But if someone can help me in this it would be truly great.

It's just stubbornness that makes me want to use the template like
this, and a certain amount of ire that I can't find where this type of
footnote for a letter, is documented. Because it's a very popular way to
create a letter. With something like manager, assistant manager and
office address, or president, secretary and treasurer, or similar
and their contact details in the footer of a letter?

It's probably somewhere I have just not thought to look, or under a
heading I haven' associated with a letter.

Thanks in advance,
Charlie

In case it assists anyone else in the future.

I couldn't get the \nextfoot variable to work Jean, because I didn't
know how to write it, so probably wrote it wrong.

But this works a treat placed at the bottom of the preamble to drop the
page number down a bit, or a lot in my case.

\setlength{\footskip}{4cm}

That can be be "pts" as well instead of "cm" or "mm"

Hope that helps someone else.

Thanks again Jean.

Apologies sent the wrong file in last email.......

2014-05-01 Thread Charlie

Apologies. I was in a bit of a rush and sent the wrong file in the last
email.

It gives me an opportunity to add something at any rate.

Hoping someone can help me with this.

Using Debian Jessie [testing]

Lyx Version 2.0.6

I have attached my a text copy of my DIN.Ico file.

Can someone please tell me what I have to change to have the text on my
first page actually write down closer to the bottom of the page?

At the moment the text ends about 75mm from the bottom of the page and
then starts a new page.

Also, to get my page number on the second page lower to the bottom of
the page, at the moment it is about 50mm from the bottom. I think this
has something to do with the same setting that would fix the above.

Nothing that I so in: Document settings>Margins
makes any difference.

TIA

Charlie

ICO file - allow text to go lower on page.....

2014-05-01 Thread Charlie

Hoping someone can help me with this.

Using Debian Jessie [testing]

Lyx Version 2.0.6

I have attached my a text copy of my DIN.Ico file.

Can someone please tell me what I have to change to have the text on my
first page actually write down closer to the bottom of the page?

At the moment the text ends about 75mm from the bottom of the page and
then starts a new page.

Also, to get my page number on the second page lower to the bottom of
the page, at the moment it is about 50mm from the bottom. I think this
has something to do with the same setting that would fix the above.

TIA

Be well,
Charlie

6 DIN.lco file:

/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/koma-script/DIN.lco

Read section 4.2 Pseudo-Lengths (page 135). With my words:
All these pseudo-lengths have a default value. If you want to change
this default value and make it completly different you use \@setplength.
If you want to slightly modify it, you use \@addtoplength.

\@setplength{sigindent}{0mm}
will place the box containing the signature on the left side but this is
already defined in the DIN.lco

It's probably worthwhile to make your own version of the DIN.lco that
you are using. Copy it under a new name (myDIN.lco f.ex.) in the
directory where you have your lyx letters and modify it as you wish:

Instead of using
\@addtoplength{firstheadvpos}{1cm}
after calling the original DIN.lco where this plength is set, you can
replace inside your new lco the
\@setplength{firstheadvpos}{8mm}
by
\@setplength{firstheadvpos}{18mm}

Don't forget to call your lco file in the preamble:

\LoadLetterOption{myDIN}%

To place the signature inside the closing box on the left you have to
change in your lco file
  \let\raggedsignature=\centering
to
\let\raggedsignature=\raggedright

In Debian the way that I Installed Libertine fonts and others, this way:

Downloaded the fonts from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/linuxlibertine/files/linuxlibertine/5.3.0/

I have a directory in: /usr/share/fonts as "my-fonts", but you don't
need your own directory, It's just that I use a lot of fonts.

Put the unzipped [if they are zipped] somewhere in /usr/share/fonts

Then as root: fc-cache

or, if that doesn't work as root: fc-cache -fv

You may have to close down and start LyX again, but those fonts should
be seen in every word processor, text editor and LyX of course.

Hope that helps.

Here, in ~/.lyx/ is a file called pwl_english.dict; in the LyX preferences
under Language Settings -> Spellchecker the default in the top dropdown box
is Aspell; the other choices are Enchant and Hunspell, neither of which are
on my systems.

In ~/.lyx/pwl_english.dict are the words that I've added, including those
in the current document. So they are present, but each time I finish a
chapter and spell check the document those words are highlighted and the
tool pauses for me to tell it to ignore all. And, it doesn't do the latter,
either; I need to tell it to ignore each instance of the same word which is
in the dict file.

Rich

I don't have ~/.lyx/pwl_english.dict on my Jessie system.

Is that possibly the problem? What happens if you comment it out and see if the
problem persists?

Hi Rich,

I had a closer look now. I'm on a Mac but this shouldn't make a difference.

At first some facts about the feature:
* It's not possible to use Aspells own "private word list". Aspell has no
interface for removing a word from it's list. So LyX doesn't add any word
to Aspells "private word list" but to a self maintained list.
* LyX maintains separate lists per language.
* These lists are stored as text files in the user directory, one file per
language.
* The list for a given language is read on the first attempt of spell check.
* The list is modified in memory and saved to disk on exit of LyX.
* The list is shared by all open documents.

This said I have to admit - I cannot reproduce your problem.

One thing I can imagine to create problems is having multiple instances of LyX
open.

Stephan

Possibly not in Mac, but in Debian Jessie and the same was the case in wheezy,
aspell has a list of users words added in the /home/user directory.

Being only an English language user, I don't have a list of "private" words or
user added words text list in /home/.lyx, so maybe it differs in Debian?

Be well,
Charlie

I don't know where I read about that? Latex Stack Exchange or something.

I tried your link and it works. The above works if I use geometry to
direct textwidth in my preamble or not.

It's not pretty, but no one sees it.

Now I use that in every preamble where I might need to use long URL's.

I am of a like mind in this. I have no liking for ribbon menus, I'm
uncertain they are an improvement. I am certain they are not an
improvement for me.

They appear to be fancy for its own sake and not at all clear for quick
use. But then I am not a windows user and therefore use them very
occasionally. Only use them to try to find things for windows users who
also have a problem finding things they want, when using them.

  Thank you Jean-Marie,

You have helped me once again. I have two copies of the scrguien.pdf
and I use the latest. Read it, but obviously I don't know how to
use it. How to put the commands together in some instances.

I read this: sigbeforevskip vertical skip between closing and signature
(section 6.6.1, page 207)

But didn't really understand it.

Even tried working with this:
\setkomavar{signature}{John McEnvy\\{\small (Vice-President ‘‘The Other
Society’’)}}

\closing{Regards\\(for the board of directors)}

But couldn't put it together to rectify my problem, then searched the
net again and couldn't come up with the right answer.

Thank you again, because you have solved my problem once more, and you
will know it's much appreciated.

Be well,

letter (KOMA-Script v.2) Space between closing and signature...........

2013-02-23 Thread Charlie

I'm having a problem with the space between Closing and Signature in:

letter (KOMA-Script v.2)

using LyX version 2.0.3 Debian Wheezy.

I need more space to apply my hand written signature.

The document class doesn't honour vertical space after Closing.

It doesn't honour vertical space before Signature.

I have been googling this through Latex and LyX and nothing is either
working or making any sense when I read the text?

My preamble looks like this:

%% Load an *.lco style file (see KOMA documentation)
%%\LoadLetterOption{DIN}%

% vertical position of the address field
\@addtoplength{toaddrvpos}{1cm}
% space between ref line and letter text
\@setplength{refaftervskip}{5mm}
