Opening documents from a link in Libreoffice
Hello, I am using LyX 2.3.7 under the latest MacOS. I have a Libreoffice spreadsheet with many links to LyX documents. When I click on such a link, it does launch LyX and the associated document. But several functions (Python-related, I guess) are missing: shortcuts and (more importantly) lyx2lyx. Granted, if I open a document from a link, it’s just to have a quick look, not for heavy editing. But if the document is old, lyx2lyx fails and the file just won’t open (whereas it opens quite nicely if I open it from within LyX). I hope I’m being clear… IIRC this issue was not present under Linux. Nor does it happen with other file types than LyX. I don’t know what to think. I’m not even sure it has to do with LyX (maybe Libreoffice trying to enforce its own Python flavour?), but I thought as well to report it. Default directory for saving previewed files
Dear list members, I have recently noticed a small annoyance (LyX 2.3.7, MacOS 14). It’s about the folder where the various PDF previewers save their files by default. They always revert to a /lyx_tmpbuf0 (e.g.) which is rather deeply nested below the LyX temp directory, either the one chosen for me by the system, or the one that I specified. That makes it tedious to navigate back to the folder where I want to put the file. I’d rather have them remember the last directory used—I think it was the case before (my upgrading to MacOS 14). Apple’s “Preview” and Master PDF both exhibit this behaviour, unlike Acrobat reader (but it has other drawbacks). I don’t know whether the culprit is the latest MacOS, or my recent Python woes, but I’d be glad if there was a setting somewhere which would help me to solve that. Yes, I had seen this thread and I had reviewed it. What I didn’t expect, was that the upgrade would suppress something! I don’t know how Python was present before the upgrade (builtin?) However, I have installed the Python3 pkg from the official Python website before I could read your advice. Let’s see if that persists across the next upgrades! Thanks for your reply Isaac. The user directory is: ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.3/ That sounded correct. So I investigated a bit more on the Python side. It was definitely a Python issue. I still can hardly believe it, but it seems that the upgrade had completely stripped my system of any Python. I (re)installed it from the official site, and all the LyX shortcuts got working again. And the reconfigure function, too. So, problem solved for now. Doesn’t all this look like a Python issue? I don’t want to rush into any hazardous workaround… What would you suggest? A window size question
Hello, Here is a small annoyance I have about the main window size. I now have an external display, its resolution is much higher that of the MacBook screen (whereas in my [revious setup the resolutions were the same). Every time I switch from one display to another, the LyX window reverts to its default size, the one you get when you start LyX for the 1st time. That’s quite small: no more that the quarter of the small built-in display. I’d like LyX to retain, at least, the window size of the small display, like several other apps do. Is there a setting which can do that? (The “remember window geometry” option doesn’t help.) Makes sense. I used to do that by putting all the .lyx~ in my dedicated /backup directory, and emptying it periodically. Some filenames ending with tilde
Hello, I'm still rather new to using LyX on a Mac, and I have a couple more questions, here is the 1st: I've just recently noticed that some .lyx~ files remain alongside my regular LyX documents. They are not hidden, but the Mac file browser adds a subtitle to them: "non admissible" (in French...) Shouldn't they be erased automatically? Is there a setting that I'm missing? I conclude that there is a risk, however little, that something _can_ go wrong. Since I cannot afford to break anything for the next months, I think I’ll play it safe and delay the upgrade. I need to learn MacOS better first. (Marcus: I didn’t even know that the downgrade relied on Time Machine…) In the meantime, there’s a couple of very minor annoyances that I cannot solve alone; I’ll ask about them in another thread. About upgrading to MacOS 13
Dear list members, I have monitored last month’s threads about LyX woes under macOS 13. There wasn’t a definite conclusion it seems. Would you say it’s safe to upgrade to MacOS13 now (with LyX 2.3.6.2)? When I installed it, it complained about Python missing, but I somehow managed to get Python installed too. I’m rather new to Mac, and in no hurry at all to do the upgrade. Perhaps it would be best to wait for LyX 2.4? Thanks Tobias and Paul, problem solved. It was indeed twofold. For
reference, here is what I've done:
1) in order to get variation tables (is that correct?) to compile
correctly, I had to load the tkz-tab package instead of just tikz. (I
guess it's a superset of tikz with commands such as \TkzTabLine and so
on.)
2) My instant preview was indeed turned off, which I prefer for maths,
but there is the "no maths" option, which previews just the drawings.
Very convenient!

If I put the tikz code inside the Preview, I just get the code in the
output. If I put it inside TeX Code, I get an error ("control sequence
never def'd" about tkzTabInit)
I know my tikz code is OK because I was able to preview its result and
export to eps from the Qtikz utility. But it would be sooo much simpler
to get that directly under LyX!

However, the "export QT_IM_MODULE=xim" thing is not a solution by itself, but comes after tweaking some QT config files (mentioned in the thread above). Maybe something got broken there with a QT update? It always happens to me. But let's hope you won't have to dive into this for each and every accented character! FYI - Qt5 utility to customize the LyX look and feel
Hello, Having recently upgraded to Debian Stetch (and LyX 2.3) I missed the "QT4 - QTconfig" utility which is now deprecated. I have found a replacement called "qt5ct": https://sourceforge.net/projects/qt5ct/ With this utility, you can have LyX (and other Qt apps.) blend nicely with the look of other apps. Unfortunately, there was no package for Debian Stretch so I had to build one myself. If anyone is interested, or would like more details (instructions, screenshots, feel free to ask. Hello, I'm still new to LyX 2.3 (from 2.1) so I'm not ashamed of asking a trivial question: As I open my old documents, in various places I'm can see this (non- printing) symbol which I had never met before: What does it mean? I can't see any difference in preview if I erase it. TIA - Daniel

Yet, I can't help thinking there's something "special" with the LyX main edit window. I mean, I have several other Qt apps (Filezilla, Scribus, Clementine...)--though I don't use them half as much as LyX. None of them has this problem. Even in LyX, the dead keys do work well within the dialogs (e.g. file-save as). It's only the main window that shows the problem. Moreover, I could check that the dead keys did work properly within LyX just freshly installed in a live-USB session. I'm puzzled. As long as my workaround works, all is well... but if it fails eventually, I'll be in trouble. -- Daniel CLEMENT
Dead keys no longer work
Dear list members, I'm in a bit of trouble while testing LyX 2.3.1 (fortunately on a secondary PC), under Linux Debian 9 (Stretch). I'm using an US-international keyboard layout, with dead keys: to type an accented letter, I type the accent, then the letter (and accent + space if I want just the accent). Just today I noticed that no dead key was working anymore in LyX! I can't get any accented letter or standalone accent. In other apps I don't have this problem. Yet I'm rather sure it worked "before"--I have just tested it again on a live USB session. So... How did I manage to break my LyX install, and how could I get it back? Any help greatly appreciated! Now I made an opposite test on my old system (w/ LyX 2.1.2 and TL 2014): in a document which uses LuaTeX, I chose portrait orientation in LyX and the output was correctly oriented. So, some change in LyX and/or LuaTeX (under Linux) now prevents the choices made within LyX from being passed correctly to LuaTeX, whereas it worked before. " (I was trying the former). With \pagewidth 297mm and \pageheight 210mm in my document preamble I got back my A4-landscape output. Now, I trust LyX can take care of this. Dear list members, While updating a PC under Debian, Lyx went from version 2.1.2 to 2.2.2 (and even 2.3.1 from Backports). I'm having an issue with some documents which need to be compiled under Luatex. They use landscape, A4, 2-column page setup and the issue is: whenever I try to specify custom margins, my preview reverts to portrait, US letter format. The last 2 icons (before "Documents" and "Examples" are "list view" and "detailed view" (I do my best to translate from French). I suggest that you select the latter. Then you end up with an explorer-like windows, where the columns have titles "name", "size", "type" and so on. These are clickable. A small arrow (up or down) next to one column shows how the files and folders are sorted. Try clicking on the "name" or "type", once or twice. If I do that, I get precisely what you describe, but then a 2nd click restores the "directory first" sort order. Cedilla problem: there and back (solved) again
Hello, Last week I had noticed that the long-standing cedilla problem, solved 2 years ago, had come back. The problem is (was) that the '+c sequence in US-intl keyboard resulted in accented c instead of cedilla c in QT apps like LyX. I don't know how to link to a very old thread, I don't want to revive it either, so I repost for reference the link that allowed me to solve the problem once again: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/518056 It's the same link as 2 years ago, except that this time only the solution described in post #39 worked. I knew another possibility: put in the preamble
\DeclareSymbolFont{bbold}{U}{bbold}{m}{n}
\DeclareSymbolFontAlphabet{\mathbbold}{bbold}
(where did I find that ?!)
Then, a blackboard bold 1 can be obtained with \mathbbold{1}.
It appears nicely in the LyX editor.
I'll compare that with Paul's suggestion ASAP.

(imagemagick-commom was there, but the column in synaptic was too narrow and I did not notice the difference...) So, of course, installing imagemagick solved the problem. No graphics preview within LyX
Dear list members, I have this issue with a PC at work: graphics are not displayed in sh: 1: convert: not found /usr/share/lyx/scripts/convertDefault.py ERROR Execution of "convert" failed.the LyX window. I got this error: "Error converting to readable format" (I do my best to translate from French.) However, the graphic file is here, and previewing the whole file (e.g. in PDF) is fine. The system is Linux Debian Stable (w/ LyX 2.1.3), it's supposed to be the very same setup as on my home PC (except that it's 32-bit instead of 64). My own PC does not have this problem. If I launch LyX from the command line, I get this error message in the terminal: sh: 1: convert: not found /usr/share/lyx/scripts/convertDefault.py ERROR Execution of "convert" failed. Hello, I only just noticed after upgrading to LyX 2.1.3 that the dialog boxes such as File-Open, File-Save etc. no longer used the system theme for icons (but instead a faded blue). Maybe I was just lucky enough that in 2.1.2, LyX's own theme was just very close to my system theme? Has something changed? Perhaps a new setting that I have overlooked? Oops--I thought Tools > Reconfigure was only for LaTeX packages... I
only restarted LyX. Now "european.kmap" seems to work as it should.
That's not quite the way I want my keyboard to work, but I'll try and
use this file as a template for my own "perso.kmap", not forgetting to
reconfigure each time :-)
Now I'll try and play with the settings, and hopefully get this working.

My ongoing cedilla problem
Dear list members, There's one small issue I've never been able to get fixed (since v. 1.4 I believe). Though I write in French, I prefer to use a US-intl keyboard (for easy access to various brackets), typing accents with dead keys. Trouble is, LyX keeps translating " 'c " into an accented "c", unlike any other app (which gives a cedilla "c", the expected behavior). I carefully reviewed section 4.2 of the Customization manual, but though I understand it's about tweaking the .kmap file, I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of possibilities. Should I use \kmod or \kxmod? acute or ' ? cC or c and C on separate lines? In fact I get the impression that my .kmap file has no effect, regardless of what I put into it. TIA for any input. - I select TexGyge Pagella in LyX's fonts dialog;
- but I can't choose newpxmath from there so I have to add

Hello, I like to use the TexGyre Pagella font in many documents, better that Palatino which lacks ligatures. However, Palatino triggers a nice matching font for maths, and I was never able to get it with TG Pagella, at least under LyX 2.0.6. Now that I've installed LyX 2.1.1, I wondered if perhaps it was easier to achieve, but I can't find how to do it in the new fonts settings dialog box. File no longer compiles with Luatex 2014
Dear list members, One of my PCs (running Linux Debian) has received a Texlive update (2013 to 2014) as part of a more general update. LyX is still 2.0.6; I reconfigured it after the upgrade. Most documents compile fine but I'm getting an error with one that has to use Luatex. Below is a copy of the 1st error. (Oddly the error window is labeled "xetex error".) I couldn't state it better. This reminded me of a rather old book I was
reading when I was young (Dungeons and Dragons manual...) with numerous
tables. The background was alternately white and grey, but changed only
every 3rd lines. So the zebra effect, if any, was not intrusive.
I've always found it a example of good readability, for the reason
explained above. However, the table has to be long enough, and it may
look bad in photocopy.

Understood. Long ago I used to achieve this with the indenfirst package,
but it looks like frenchb wants to take care of this now.
Now, the frenchb definitions appear to override the settings in LyX.
With the help of your link, I was able to cancel the frenchb default
behavior with
\AtBeginDocument{\frenchbsetup{IndentFirst=false}}
but this way, the 1st paragraph _never_ gets indented, regardless of the
"indent paragraph" box being checked or not.

I understand that it is good practice not to indent the first paragraph after a section. LyX indeed shows it as not indented. But in this case, the UI "guesses wrong", and under paragraph properties, the "indent paragraph" check box is ticked. Then, on preview, the 1st paragraph _is_ indented. This can be corrected by unchecking the relevant box, but why doesn't the GUI reflect properly this setting? ... so, just after the beginning of your appendix, insert a TeX field
with
\renewcommand{\thesection}{[\Roman{section}]}
assuming you want the customary appendix sections numbering: [A],
[B], ... (or \arabic{section} if you prefer numeric numbering).
However, I've not tested much, but I suspect some language packages
could conflict with that.

José, am I correct? If so: is this problem LyX-specific? Does your keyboard behave differently in, say, Gedit or LibreOffice? If not: perhaps you have accidentally selected a Spanish layout _without_ dead keys. Can you check your keyboard preferences? You have to go beyond the "layout" category and look for a "variant" which has the dead keys, e.g. "Spanish - Sun dead keys" or "Spanish - including tilde dead key". Babel error since update
Hello, I had LyX slightly updated today as part of the Linux Mint Debian update process. The version no. is 2.0.6 (as before I believe) but the package no. is now 2.0.6-1+b1. But, at the same time, the whole TeXLive was updated to 2013. Now I ran into Babel errors when trying to compile documents that ran fine before. The only workaround I've found is to set, under document properties, "linguistic package" to "none". Obviously, this is not satisfactory and there has to be a better way. The problem with the texlive-fonts-extra package is that it is so large, it has a lot of dependancies which could pull the better part of TL2013, which I'd rather avoid. But I guess, if I put only the newpx files in the right places, then run updmap and fmtutil as you told, it could work. PMFJI, but I was interested in Günter's suggestion, testing the newpxmath package; it looks nice, many customization options. But it doesn't seem to be part of my setup (LyX 2.0.6, Linux Mint Debian, TeXlive 2013). When I try to add it, I get the LaTeX error: "file `newpxmathsty` not found". So I searched the Debian archive and noticed it was part of the texlive-fonts-extra package, but only the one from TeXlive 2013. Now this is a very large package (140+ Mb), and it appears to depends on other TL2013 packages. Hence my question: isn't there a 'lighter" way to test newpxmath, without fully moving to TL2013? Hello, When notebooks appeared with very small screens this has been a common issue for many programs. Have you tried, as a workaround, dragging the window while holding Alt? This should allow the invisible buttons to appear. System dialog boxes appearance
Hello, I am using LyX 2.0.3. I have just migrated to Linux Mint Debian (XFCE) from Ubuntu (Gnome 2). I have noticed that the File-Open dialog boxes no longer integrated nicely with the system settings (as they used to do). The folder and file icons in both panes don't match the system-wide setting (theme) any more. I was wondering if perhaps a tricky LyX setting could help, or adding some judicious package? You see how finicky I have to be so as to find something to criticize in LyX! -- Daniel CLEMENT

algorithmic environment
Hello, I'm trying to setup the algorithmic environment (LyX 2.0.3 from the LyX repo.) I did my best to follow the Wiki page, but there are two things I'm unable to do: 1. I don't see the algorithmic toolbar (si I must do everything with cut/paste). I've downloaded algorithmics.module and algo-toolbar.inc to ~/.lyx/layouts, added a line Include "algo-toolbar.inc" to ~/.lyx/ui/default.ui but while I see an algorithm toolbar under View -> Toolbars -> Other toolbars, nothing happens if I check it. What am I doing wrong? 2. I have managed to translate the "Algorithm" caption into French (with \floatname), but how could I do the same for the pseudocode keywords (e.g. if, then, else...)? deb for ubuntu lucid?
Hello, [sorry if double post--looks like the previous one did not reach the list] Is there any chance of seeing a .deb file appear for Ubuntu Lucid? So far I relied on getdeb to get lyx updated, but it looks like getdeb has somewhat dropped supporting lyx on lucid. Of course Ubuntu has recent lyx packages but lucid doesn't meet their dependencies. OTTH, I'm not so fond at compiling myself, and I see that even on the lucid-bleed ppa, lyx 2.0.0 "failed to build"... not very encouraging. I'm in no hurry to upgrade my Ubuntu. Has anyone successfully compiled lyx 2 under lucid 64? TIA for any advice or experience report. -- Daniel CLEMENT

Definitely an improvement. Maybe LyX could load _this_ package for
Palatino fonts, if it just supersedes mathpazo?

No ligatures in Palatino?
Dear list members, I have been using the palatino font for a while. But I only recently noticed that, in documents using this font, no ligatures appeared (e.g. in ff, fi, ...). However, the various dashes (--, ---) do get linked properly. Aren't these "ligatures"? What do you think of this? I searched the WiKi and the list archive, and I came across this message: http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg45849.html ...but it's pretty old, and perhaps no longer relevant. Also: "Acknowledgement" "Remerciement" In French, "Remerciements" is almost always plural, I think. Just my 2 cents...
