Have a look at https://writer2latex.sourceforge.net/index.html

I have used Writer2LaTeX a few years ago and found it very
helpful when using what was then called the "Ultraclean"
Option, which I don't see on this much more current version
on cursory look.

Install both writer2latex.oxt and writer2latex-config.oxt.
Then play with the Configuration in Tools -> Options (which
on my Mac only appear of an ODT is open).

You would need to save as ODT first, then export to LaTeX,
from which you would be able to use tex2lyx (the -m option
canbehelpful), and then you could pull into LyX.

If the Word format you are getting is always the same (per
lawyer) which is likely, because they would use some sort of
"template" much of this could be automated :-)-O

The PDF5 might look like

File -> Export -> Export [PDF (LuaTeX)]

which I have tied to Command-R on my Mac(s).

I don't think so.  What I am looking into is this:  Pacer will only accept pdf 
files. If those who 
export to pdf from within a word document don't have to "flatten" the document 
before 
uploading to Pacer, while those who use lyx are forced to flatten any document 
imported from a 
Word doc before uploading to Pacer, I want to let the Pacer folks know this and 
suggest that 
Pacer not default to Word.  

Word is so dominant that even in Nevada State Courts we are required to convert 
any editable 
document to Word before the judge will even look at it. If there must be a 
standard here, I think 
it should be an open source standard.  Courts should not be in the business of 
requiring 
everyone to use Word (or any other proprietary product).

Hi el,

If I get a Word doc, it opens in libreoffice, which allows for export to pdf.  
If I recall, I generally 
either highlight the words involved while in libreoffice and paste directly to 
lyx or instead export 
to pdf, highlight the relevant portions of the pdf and paste to lyx. 

It took me forever to get the ps2pdf right (so it would become pleading paper, 
with a vertical 
line followed by line numbers to the left of the page.  When I use anything 
else I have to load 
pleading paper and use that.

I plan to try your PDF5 trick this weekend.

did you ever try to export using PDF5 (LuaLaTeX)?

Recent PSTricks should load
https://github.com/zauguin/luapstricks when using LuaLaTeX. If
that works for the "normal" way try and upload into Pacer and
see what happens. If Pacer accepts that see what happens when
you import a Word document and generate the PDF with LuaLaTeX.

How do you "import" Word documents?

I defenstrated from Microsoft 26 years ago so cannot directly answer your
question. However, I might help reduce the time and effort to 'flatten' Word
docs without running them over in your car.

When I have a .doc/.docx file sent that I want to incorporate into a LyX
document I'll do either of two things:

1. Highlight the desired text in the Word document then use Edit -> Paste
Special -> Join Lines to put it in the LyX doc.

2. When I need the entire Word doc and it's sent as a PDF I use pdftotext,
then Insert -> Plain Text, Join Lines. If it's a .doc/.docx file I load it
in LibreOffice Writer then save as a text file before inserting it.

Since your LyX document is set to include line numbers I think these actions
would work for you.

It looks like you are using polyglossia.

For document->settings->language  choose babel and then write into
the preamble

\AtBeginDocument{\hyphenation{im-por-tant the-o-re-ti-cal}}

Sometime, Writing a message helps us to solve the problem I imagine.
I have solved the problem I think. turkish in Babe need ,shorthands=:! as
an option (to neutralize babel rules for =, it seems that they pose a
problem for xkeyval used by includegraphics). I was adding it in custom
options for the document, but it was not working it seems. I have thought
of trying to put it in the preamble by putting
\usepackage[shorthands=:!]{babel}
and it worked. Both figures compile now.
I was not well aware of this possibility of adding supplementary options
through the preamble. It works very well.

I just ran pdflatex against your TeX, and again it compiled for me with 
no errors. I'm running Linux Mint 18.2 (based on Ubuntu 16.04), with LyX 
2.2.3 and TeXLive 2017. I've attached the pdflatex log file; maybe you 
can look for differences with yours and find out where yours deviates. 
It seems to be something on your system, not a LyX error.

(Debian/stable with pre-packaged TeXLive 2016).

I know that amsmath re-defines \dots to be context sensitive. It may be
that \numberwithin{equation}{section} interferes with this re-definition in
some way (in the version used by you) and the bug is solved in current
versions.

You may try to use \ldots instead of \dots or to update your TeX installation.

Thanks for replying. Ctrl-R  does pdflatex. Attached is the tex file 
produced by exporting from lyx, and I get the same error by running 
pdflatex directly on it. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 with everything upto date.


By the way the error still happens if the superscripts are removed, it 
seems to be the \dots that are causing the problem.

I am not getting these though :-)-O

I don't have Finnish (can someone who does contact the correct new
address of the two offered perhaps?), but the second one looks like
they don't like fli.bund.de any longer and want to be called fli.de, so
maybe Eildert must unsubscribe the old address and resubscribe under
the new (which is why he reads in copy)

What I do when I get a stubborn mail program, is to create a filter
that moves the file into my bounce folder.

Rich,

LyX has a versioning system (by default).

It uses RCS, which used to be part of the XCode command line tools on
the Mac (and can still be installed via homebrew) and an Ubuntu
package by itself.  There should be some Windoze package too,
somewhere.

There is also SVN support for document preparation but it's way more
complicated :-)-O

File 'README' suggests to read 'NEWS'.
File 'NEWS' suggests to read 'RELEASE-NOTES'.

probably added because someone got caught with a file they could not 
edit after going to a new version of LyX, then backing out of the 
upgrade for some reason.  I am not sure whether this feature had been 
added earlier --- I don't have such backups around except those created 
by lyx 2.2.

  I'm not disturbed, just assumed they were backup files and deleted them.

Note that if you specify a backup directory in Tools > Preferences >
Paths, these files will end up there instead of the working directory,
which might disturb you less.

I personally would never run a one-liner that does deletions. My pencil
has an eraser because I make mistakes. A mistake with such a one liner
could do horrible things. I'd do something like this:

  Works for me. When I upgrade I don't keep the older version installed. If

It's a new feature with 2.2. When you load files with a new major
release, it has
to be converted to the new format (which encodes various new features).
We had
some cases where people tried to load files with 2.1 and the file was
for some
reason corrupted. Of course, they had a backup. Or not. So now we do not
over-
write the original file, but just rename it.

It means that \end{centering} calls \endcentering only if this command exists. 
This is due to the way LaTeX environments are defined (the environment end 
does not call \endcentering directly, but \csname endcentering\endcsname, 
which sets \endcentering to \relax if it is not defined. Hence, LaTeX does not 
complain about an undefined \endcentering, but just treat it as if th command 
was "empty".

If I understand correctly in latex you can write

\begin{centering}, which becomes/equals \centering,

and 

\end{centering},  which becomes/equals \endcentering.

What do you mean by "empty \endcentering" ?
empty \endcentering.

I have a question as well related to centering but as I don't want
to hijack the thread I will ask it separately.

The centering "environment" internally just calls \centering ... 
\endcentering, with an empty \endcentering. You can do this with any switch, 
although it is rather the consequence of LaTeX's questionable environment 
implementation. LyX (mis)uses this, since it's easier than tracking switches.

Good news, I have been able to locate the problem using the SLM (Steve 
Litt Method): I was doing a somewhat anti-latex thing.


In Lyx, I am able to introduce a forced empty line by typing twice 
CMD+Return, and that looks OK on the screen, but, of course Latex does 
not like it at all, even if I introduce some small space before the line 
jump (such lines appear \,\\ in the exported latex). By replacing this 
inelegant construction by a CMD+Return + a vertical space the problem 
has been solved and my slide compiles.


So, beware of spaces looking OK on the Lyx screen, they can not respect 
the Latex's logical requirements...


Thank you again for your helps and suggestions, the Devil was in the 
invisibles this time.

Well it was a shot in the dark...

How about creating a MWE---a one slide presentation, for instance---and
sending it to the list?

I somehow have the feeling you have some kind of encoding problem. I
have been burned by issues resulting from cutting and pasting from other
sources into Lyx before. Encodings were usually to blame.

I will have to follow the famous Steve Litt methodology I think :-). :
creating a new document and adding incrementally the slides from the old
document until the emergence of the problem. I would really like to
understand the source of this problem, I never meet them when I directly
write in Latex, so I must do some stupid cooy and paste errors in Lyx...

frame within LyX. Hasn't hurt anything. But, similar to your use, I use the
result for presentation and workshop visuals not as stand-alone documents.

Don't nest an ERT-inset in a math-inset. Instead, type in a math-box

   \simbolo{
   
and you will get the LaTeX $\simbolo{ } with the cursor between the braces
(open View>LaTeX Source to see the effect).

Now insert the first argument and type

   \{
   
to get an unescaped pair of braces for the second argument.

This is described in the mathematics manual (Help>Maths).

This test case worked here too. Just my file behave strange, if I wrote some 
parts I got no errors, but if I copy the section that gave-me errors in your 
example it works fine.
I found out that for some reason the lyx code had an line "\lang brasilian" 
just 
after the section that does not work, I just open the lyx file in a text editor 
and deleted that line. Everything works fine now.

You do not have to put the cursor _in_ the listings, but select the
whole listings inset from outside.

I suppose it depends whether the encoding is active when the header is
written (at page break?) or not.

As a document is in English and the only problematic letter is in my
surname the first solution seems to be the easier to adapt for me.

there are active only the bottom three positions (capitalize, uppercase

The problem results from the fact that LyX has to switch to latin9

(2) set the document language to Polish (given the document is in
Polish, of course) or (3) select the listing and change the language
in Edit > Text Style to Polish just for the listing. (2) and (3) will
cause the switch to be to latin2.

although the problem was correctly diagnosed at the time, nothing 
happened. Assuming you still use LyX, you will be glad to hear that the 
bug is now fixed in trunk for spanish and galician.

So lilypond-book complains that a -systems.count file is missing. This 
is either a bug in lilypond (it should generate the -systems.count file 
always) or in lilypond-book (it should know that -systems.count files 
are not always generated). In any case in should probably be 
investigated with the smallest possible example and reported to the 
lilypond project.


In the meantime you may try to get around the bug by adding the 
command-line option "--skip-lily-check" to the lilypond-book converter.

I tried to Export > LilyPond-Book (LaTeX) but I get an utf-8 error because there
are some unicode characters in my document not recognized by latex, so maybe
it'd be good to have an export option LilyPond-Book (XeTeX) or something.

For now I replaced all lilypond code inside lyx with pregenerated images from
lilypond.

for my document. Also lyx looks different with gksu so no idea what's going on
there.
In the lyx-output the only thing hinting for the error is this line:

Is there anything else in View > View Messages that might be useful in 
debugging? You may also add the command option "--loglevel=DEBUG" to the 
lilypond-book converter. When you run lilypond-book manually, what is 
the exact command line that you used?

Try compiling without adding anything to the preamble. To note simply 
states that these packages should be installed on your system. "was" is 
obviously installed, and it consists of the style files "fixmath", 
"gensymb", etc. as you have observed. One of these must be needed by the 
Math manual. But in fact you should not need to edit anything within 
that file in order to get it to compile. (if you do get compile errors, 
please report them of course!)

in a lyx note thus commenting it out the error vanishs.

This was in fact the way I started the search for the error, because I
thought removing the Bibliography entrance is a fast and effective way to
find out whether a reference is causing the problem.

You were right! The installation of my coauthor is using an older version,
which was uploaded manually to a place in the tex path which has precedence
over the new installation.

I'm a little embarrassed as I should have checked the versions first of all.

If I remember correctly I think \newblock is usually defined by the BibTeX
style file (.bst file) just like \url, \doi, etc. If that's right then
you're seeing a bug in that style file.

You can quickly fix it by defining this command yourself in the preamble
of your document.

Hi,

If I remember correctly I think \newblock is usually defined by the 
BibTeX style file (.bst file) just like \url, \doi, etc. If that's right 
then you're seeing a bug in that style file.


You can quickly fix it by defining this command yourself in the preamble 
of your document.

If you don't use KOMA, several packages provide footnote customization.

It tells, that at this stage, LaTeX does not know the command \unit.

Did you type this command in your document or did LyX insert it?

Did you manually load the package unit.sty (in the user preamble)?
Did you use a module?

Is the "missing command" /unit still in the exported LaTeX source (you can
check with View>Source or by exporting to LaTeX)?

It only deletes what it inserts. Also, if you remove a module, LyX will/can
typically not remove code that depends on this module.

Also, if you move a file from one computer to another, LyX will not remove
code that relies on packages only present on the first...

All temporary files generated by LyX are in the temporary folder and so
are not used again. There might be other files in the original document
folder, e.g., *.sty files, that are needed for compilation, and then you
could have a problem if you just copied the LyX file. But LyX does not
put those there.

My guess is that the problem might have been lyx2lyx issue. But it's
hard to know without more info. This error:

"ist $\unit[1]{\lyxmathsym{\textdegree}C}
  $ gleich $\unit[1]{K}$.
The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. 

looks to me like a missing units.sty, though.

The problem can be twosome. On the one hand, some corrupted temporary
files created by LyX's compilation can be generating the problem. On
the other hand, if you compiled a Latex version on the same folder the
Lyx file is, I think it might be creating some havoc. Le us wait to
see if the developers can confirm both situations as problem sources.

But I think leaving the files on the harddisk is not a proper way. The

Looks like some sort of bug in natbib. Here's the end of the auxfile:

\bibcite{URLPython}{URL(2011{w})}
\bibcite{URLSCL3711}{URL(2011{x})}
\bibcite{URLSpongyCastle}{URL(2011{y})}
\bibcite{URLUSBBug}{URL(2011{z})}
\bibcite{URLwxPython}{URL(2011{|})}

That last one is what is causing the problem.

LyX automatically adds certain packages to the preamble if it spots the need for
them, but it only sees one of a set of known "triggers".  Best guess, what you
were doing didn't hit a known trigger.  You could file a bug report.  I don't
know enough LaTeX to know if there is a fairly concise set of conditions under
which it is obvious that array is needed (or whether it is safe to say that any
time the user futzes with optional commands for columns, array should be 
loaded).

OK, I see them in acroread,  but not in Evince. I think it's this
annoying behaviour regarding frames around links. Have you played with
Document > Settings > PDF Properties > Hyperlinks > No frames around
links. If not, experiment.

thanks for all your hints.

I found a way to get lyx working again:

* hide directory ~/.config
mv .config dot.config

* login again
thus .config is newly generated
making me loose my xfce configuration.

But now LyX works again perfectly (as usual ;-)

Then i tried to reactivate all the files in dot.config hoping to find
the culprit, but nope:
Although in the end i reactivated all my settings, the effect was gone
and i could not reproduce it.

Since i don't have the time to search intensively the cause of this
effect i'm content to be able to work productively again and will not
dwell any more into this problem.

LyX was to be the only application with this effect.

My top ten apps are:
LyX (for all sorts of text)
thunderbird (email)
firefox (browser)
konqueror (navigation, exit to konsole)
konsole (using computers since pre-GUI days ;-))
(these two because i've been using KDE for several years)
OpenOffice (if i ever need an office suite MS files)
gwenview (elementary image maniplation)
kaffeine (video, dvb-t)

You are right, the menu font is a QT setting.

To the OP: 

* does this strange font selection also appear with other QT
  applications (if they are started after lang=en)?
  
* Are you running KDE? It provides a GUI for checking/setting system fonts.

This is very, very normal, actually the way to get LyX in different
languages used/recommended long before the UI setting came. 
I use it since years to have an English-speaking LyX for tests/list
postings and a German-speaking LyX for daily work.

(Werkzeuge>Einstellungen>Aussehen>Bilschirmschriften) to a Greek font

Install qt4-qtconfig, then run qtconfig-qt4. Then experiment with
different fonts, or other settings.

I didn't have another reasonable hypothesis on what could be the reason
for the observed behaviour.

It does have, however. On my system with german locale, calling lyx with

   LANG="en_US" lyx

makes it come up with all texts in english, menu, dialogs etc.

Yes, I did. Normally I use the command
