Re: VO helping me center a face in my iPhone's viewfinder

2011-12-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
this technology exists in iphoto where the face is recognized and with input
from the user, the face can be identified as a name. with a little tinkering
with the phone camera software, I don't see why with a reference target, the
face can be identified and spoken by name, etc even to the extent of adding a
contact link to refer to the address book / contacts list.

 Hi Folks,

I imagine most of you already know about this feature, but I don't recall

I was lying on the floor with the dog snoring against my left side and the
cat purring against my right, so I thought I'd hold the iPhone camera at
arm's length and try to snap a photo. I launched the native camera app on
my iphone 4 running IOS 5, put it in photo mode with auto flash and
back-facing camera, held it straight in front of me with the back-facing
lens aimed in the general direction of my face, and prepared to snap one of
 my standard off-center photos.

. Next thing I knew, VO started saying, One face, small face, near top
edge. I tilted the iPhone a bit and VO announced, One face, small face,
near left edge. I kept tilting the phone until VO announce, face
centered. Then I moved the camera closer to my face and VO announced, One
 face, large face, face centered.

I then switched cameras to the front camera and got the same results. I
also tried this in video mode but VO was silent.

Lastly, I tried aiming the back facing camera at my Black Lab's face but
could not get VO to recognize her. The cat decided she didn't want to be
part of this experiment and ran off somewhere.

I wonder what other IOS accessibility marvels I'm missing.grin

your standard apple cover is 90 days, if you've purchased apple care it's 3
years. go back to your supplier regarding the problem and they should be able

2011-12-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
I wouldn't advise tampering with it further, apple are very funny about
replacing parts if the suplier feels that damage has ben done in the process of
repair.

the best thing is to leave it as it is and take it to your supplier who should
replace it there and then. depending on where you purchased it that is. you
won't need to take in the entire system, just the keyboard with your receipt.

have you registered your product with apple online for support cover?

Re: Removing applications from App switcher in IPhone

2011-12-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
double tap the menu button at the bottom of your iphone, this brings up app
switcher.

to clear apps, do the following:

tap the app once for it's name then double tap but hold on the 2nd tap until
you hear Editing Apps . a sound effect is also played. then double tap to
remove it. After you have done so, tap the menu button to clear app switcher.

WARNING!

at this time in IOS5, there is an OS error where certain applications (memory
resident) if quit, will cause a cyclic crash. if this happens, the only way to
do this is a full on reset from itunes. this is the only way to do this.

the symptoms of this are as follows:

within the space of 5 minutes, the iphone will crash, restart and repeat, even
when docked into itunes or charging.

SOLUTION:

in iTunes, commence a full reset, before this, it is advised to backup the
contents of your phone. if your ringtones are stored in iTunes and are copied
to the iphone then this is fine, Please note that in this instance, the reset
will completely erase the iphone and install the OS from scratch.

if you encounter problems, please email freemacsforthebl...@mac-access.net and
I will assist directly.

hope this helps.

Re: Removing applications from App switcher in IPhone

2011-12-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
Hi zack, I too am on dev with apple on this,

I don't want to appear too tech on here to frighten users. basically, there's a
glitch within the user layer of IOS5 which seems to have popped up in 5.01
possibly where if all apps have been killed in app switcher, IOS encounters a
background crash. no errors given on device, instead, silence, reboots,
voiceover becomes buggy at startup, runs fine, then about 4 to 5 mins later it
repeats and continues. kind of like you would have a cyclic redundancy crash in
windows XP as an example due to a hardware fault.

I've sent info to apple on this as I cover my back all the time.

Re: Removing applications from App switcher in IPhone

2011-12-18 Thread Lewis Alexander
if you are going to delete apps from app switcher, please leave the following
apps resident...

phone, messages, system preferences, camera. these seem to be used most and
should be kept there for safety sake.

double tap the menu button at the bottom of your iphone, this brings up app
 switcher.

to clear apps, do the following:

tap the app once for it's name then double tap but hold on the 2nd tap until
you hear Editing Apps . a sound effect is also played. then double tap to
remove it. After you have done so, tap the menu button to clear app
 switcher.

 WARNING!

at this time in IOS5, there is an OS error where certain applications
(memory resident) if quit, will cause a cyclic crash. if this happens, the
only way to do this is a full on reset from itunes. this is the only way to
 do this.

the symptoms of this are as follows:

within the space of 5 minutes, the iphone will crash, restart and repeat,
even when docked into itunes or charging.

 SOLUTION:

in iTunes, commence a full reset, before this, it is advised to backup the
contents of your phone. if your ringtones are stored in iTunes and are
copied to the iphone then this is fine, Please note that in this instance,
the reset will completely erase the iphone and install the OS from scratch.

bubba, that's me. hence my advice. I use an iphone 3GS 16GB with IOS5.01 and
every so often when clearing apps am presented with a crash situation.

hence checking with XCODE and checking layers, code, etc.

the thing about technology is that an error, glitch, malfunction can occur on
any 1 product at any time at all, whether caused by a direct action or an
indirect action.

it would be handy to have a few of these systems available to run a schematic
test, run the same function and let it take its course. my phone is pretty much
standard, no extra apps, tweaks, etc. just standard as I only use it as my
phone, messages, etc.

wifi turned off by default, bluetooth off by default to save power and data.

May I ask what apps you refer to? I've been using iOS 5 since early
developer betas and have yet to encounter anything like this. At worst, I
have encountered a rebooting device, which is no problem and doesn't bother
me for more than a few seconds.
 Best,

Re: Latest version of Mac OS

2011-12-16 Thread Lewis Alexander
I would highly advise against this. not only is this highly illegal, it's also
fraught with problems where compatibility of hardware is concerned and the
behaviour of the board is concerned. Though it is possible, there is a great
deal of harm that can be caused by this. I had tested this for a compliance
method and ht took 2 days to do. not worth it. buy a mac mini or a macbook as a
basic option. simple as that.

anyway, security is the key point of apple's software hence it works only to
apple hardware. I won't go into how it works because it's not worth causing
someone's guide dog to start snoring as soon as he / she starts reading this
email. hey we've all got our points of bordom lol. woof!

Re: Latest version of Mac OS

2011-12-16 Thread Lewis Alexander
just in the issues of history sake,

back in the early 90's when apple computer was still the old way, there were
apple clones around from umax and power computing. At the time, apple was
interested in supporting the product but they had to follow licensing from
apple. After a long legal case, this went wrong and Steve HJobbs axed all clone
support with a law suit.

The way Mac OS, especially OS X works in the security aspect is, the software
detects a chip installed on the logic board as well as open firmware or EFI, so
OS X and the older MAC OS had a security point installed, locking the operating
system to apple only systems. This is still the same today.

There are some folk in this world who think that creating Hackintosh systems
is a good thing. unfortunately, it damages the sales and production reputation
of apple. hence a recent lawsuit taking action against a rather recent
developer who cracked OS X and built hackintosh systems that way.

In my honest opinion as well as fact stated by apple. this is illegal and voids
warranty, support, etc to the product.

Even though the hardware we use in our iMacs, Macbook Pro,s and Mac Pro's use
state of the art hardware, the chipsets alone are relatively standard.

I think it's best we close this subject and discourage cloning and Hackintosh
actions from this list. As we all represent apple as users, pro users and
engineers, we keep apple close to us.

Re: icloud email address not working

strange.

best thing I can think of, though I don't use iCloud much, check itunes
settings, your phone settings, etc and re enter your username and password just
in case.

if not, then there's a problem on iCloud's end. you get these things from time
to time teething problems.

2011-12-12 Thread Lewis Alexander
sound pretty much like the app may not be compatible or unsupported so as a
safe point, OS X refuses to run it.

I noticed it in previos versions of OS X.

I'm currently refurbishing a powerbook G3 Pismo 500 for freemacs for the blind
and it's taken all weekend to install the OS (OS X 10.4) and today it finally
paid off ok new dvdrw drive installed (hot swap bay, pinched a drive off a
windows laptop and it works) but when running an app, if it doesn't support the
OS in question, OS X blocks it out.

it's a pain but hey it happens.

Mplayer X. I'll look into that.

what OS are you runnning and is it updated?

Slightly off topic. does anyone here have an old apple powerbook G3 spare for parts?

2011-12-07 Thread Lewis Alexander
Hi all,

sorry to post this rather slightly off topic post. I've just taken on a
powerbook g3 pismo in a very nice condition for the project, however the
removeable DVD rom drive is dead (previous owner had damaged the main panel
leaving it missing the cover, etc)

does anyone have an old powerbook G3 lombard / wallstreet / pismo laying around
no longer used or for parts they would be able to spare or the drive needed
please.

sorry it's off topic but as we're all mac folkies here and causing trouble, I
thought it'd be a good place to ask.

by the way, have had some headway on outspoken. a very kind gent has sent me an
outspoken 9 disk, am still however looking for an outspoken 9.2 updater if
anyone knows anything.

cheers gang

Re: VMWare Fusion, anybody want help with download?

2011-12-06 Thread Lewis Alexander
As I said, please note... I am not fully versed in windows Virtual machine
systems. only hard systems. so there will be a significant change in the way
that accessibility could be available through voiceover. bearing in mind that
installing windows itself on a hardware system does require either sighted
assistance or technical knowledge to create an unattended instance.

Please don't feel I'm putting people off here on this nor put me down. that's
not what I need this week.

sorry.

2011-12-06 Thread Lewis Alexander
Hi, lovette,

I'd advise a system restore. if the seller has provided you with the recovery
software for the machine (OS X and the ilife system, etc) then you're good to
go.

I advise this for two reasons. 1: data protection 2: a clean installation is
much better than an nstall where settings have been changed. I'd be happy to
advise.

voiceover wise?

as I say, I've not done this before. I tend to avoid social media as it's not

OK let's see what can be done here.

you say that when you try to make system changes and need to lock or unlock and
it asks for a password. stupid question but did you try just hitting enter on
the password. there's a chance there's no password but it always asks for one
as normal, no matter whether you log in or anything else. if your system wasn't
set up with a password then you are ok. if there is a system password, then
it's time to break out the big guns...

Ladies Shall we dance?

let the password testing begin.

2011-12-05 Thread Lewis Alexander
this system sounds like a good number of products here in the UK and yes by
the sound of it, it's rather blind friendly.

most of these systems are either remote comtrolled and use the dock for iphone
/ ipod touch, etc. it should support the iPhone 5 when released in the future
as these products cover from the 4s down to the earlier product ranges. best
thing is to check on apple's store site as it may be sold there. ther options
are to check with the manufacturer if your product is compatible.

One word sums up this unit, Beautiful! in both looks and sound and price,

A brief description, the dock looks like a very square boombox, a speaker
each side of the dock itself.

Basic controls are on the top of the dock and they're well spaced with nice
big buttons, if you have good touch you'll be able to feel the symbols and
writing on each. The controls turn on power, play/pause, adjust volume up
and down and go to previous nad next track, a more advanced control layout
 is offered on the remote.

Sound is what you'd expect from an Altec Lansing device, plenty of bass,
plenty of mid-range and hice crisp clear tops.

The set uses an internal rechargeable battery which gives around 6 hours of
playing time, when the dock is powered the iPhone or iPod will charge with
 the dock.

Convenience is another word which can be used to describe this piece of
equipment, you can for example pick the unit up and set it down on a stirdy
stand in a few seconds with the use of the folding handle, fold it upright
to pick the device up, fold it into a middle locking position to make a
angled stand for a desktop or tuck the handle away completely when carrying
the dock in a case or a bag.

The small card-type remote control for the Dock slits into the back panel
when not in use or when transporting which is a nice touch, no excused to
lose the remote control for this dock smile.

On list we've discussed the Jawbone Jambox speaker system so I guess the
obvious question is, How is this dock different from the Jambox?.

Firstly, the inmotion KICK IMT 520 is a wired dock, that is to say that an
iPhone or iPod plugs into it either by the dock connector or via the line-in
jack at the rear of the unit, this dock does not have Bluetooth facilities
and nor is it a hands free Speakerphone. If a call does come and your music
is playing, the music will be paused allowing you to answer the call in the
usual ways, either by tapping the screen of your iPhone or by using some
 sort of speakerphone device.

How does the sound compare to the Jambox? We're talking 2 totally different
beasts here, Jambox has a more Solid sound however Jambox would be totally
out of place in a noisy room or at a party, the Altec inmotion KICK IMT 520
is clear and loud enough to be heard at your party or gathering so in the
words of the brochure for the system Pick it up, put it down and play!.

Re: Altec Lansing inmotion KICK IMT 520 portable iPhone/iPod Dock

2011-12-05 Thread Lewis Alexander
for me, not sure what I'm thinking of for christmas. my mind's not on it at the
mo. busy trying to prepare some CD's for the older macs to get working. this is
going to be difficult at best. time for a seriously strong coffee, chocolate,
etc.

maybe might treat myself to a macbook air... I've some savings left from a
previous job. thinking about it.

most of these systems are either remote controlled and use the dock for

the future as these products cover from the 4s down to the earlier product
ranges. best thing is to check on apple's store site as it may be sold
there. there options are to check with the manufacturer if your product is

One word sums up this unit, Beautiful! in both looks and sound and
price, I bought the power house for $85.00 Australian, normally this
little beauty is around $225.00 Australian so shop around.

A brief description, the dock looks like a very square boombox, a speaker
each side of the dock itself.

Basic controls are on the top of the dock and they're well spaced with
nice big buttons, if you have good touch you'll be able to feel the
symbols and writing on each. The controls turn on power, play/pause,
adjust volume up and down and go to previous nad next track, a more
advanced control layout is offered on the remote.

Sound is what you'd expect from an Altec Lansing device, plenty of bass,
plenty of mid-range and hice crisp clear tops.

The set uses an internal rechargeable battery which gives around 6 hours
of playing time, when the dock is powered the iPhone or iPod will charge
 with the dock.

Convenience is another word which can be used to describe this piece of
equipment, you can for example pick the unit up and set it down on a
stirdy stand in a few seconds with the use of the folding handle, fold it
upright to pick the device up, fold it into a middle locking position to
make a angled stand for a desktop or tuck the handle away completely when
carrying the dock in a case or a bag.

Firstly, the inmotion KICK IMT 520 is a wired dock, that is to say that an
iPhone or iPod plugs into it either by the dock connector or via the
line-in jack at the rear of the unit, this dock does not have Bluetooth
facilities and nor is it a hands free Speakerphone. If a call does come
and your music is playing, the music will be paused allowing you to answer
the call in the usual ways, either by tapping the screen of your iPhone or
by using some sort of speakerphone device.

How does the sound compare to the Jambox? We're talking 2 totally
different beasts here, Jambox has a more Solid sound however Jambox
would be totally out of place in a noisy room or at a party, the Altec
inmotion KICK IMT 520 is clear and loud enough to be heard at your party
or gathering so in the words of the brochure for the system Pick it up,
 put it down and play!.

I need a 2nd system for diagnostics as I'm loathed to take my macbook pro on

as the data server. so a macbook air is a possibility. either that or something
else on the cards.

I'm absolutely fuming that apple killed off the XServe servers. so I'm on the
hunt for a G4 Xserve or somethig like that as a datacenter.

It's frustrating when having to burn CD's all the time between home and the

Re: HD dimmed

2011-12-04 Thread Lewis Alexander
yes.

your hard drive has either been locked or is dying.

symptoms of this include applications struggling to load, strange sounds which
you haven't heard before. irratic booting, etc. this is a dead hard disk.

please could you drop me an email off list with details of your machine, if you
have apple care cover, etc and I can walk you through various test steps, etc
to identify a dead drive.

from what you have described, your drive has failed.

Hard drives have a shelf life, because of their rotational speed, heat, data
read and write processes, drives fail. When they do, you know about it.

I've been there only yesterday with an SCSI drive which failed, had to
disassemble it, clean, respin and reassemble it to bring it back to life to
back up the contents to install on a nwer drive.

Re: programming on the mac

2011-11-29 Thread Lewis Alexander
that's it.

ffrom my own experience, I use X Code to code certain products, but after that,
I send my work off to a chap I know who can work on the GUI and between us work
on voiceover tune ups.

I do miss the old days of C++ etc. oh well lol

oh by the way. too many ghands You're not Vishnu are you? if so, I humbly
bow down to you.

On 29 Nov 2011, at 18:18, Travis Siegel wrote:

It isn't (yet) possible for a voiceover user to build an apple interface from
start to finish without sighted assistance. This means, that if you're
trying to use apple provided tools (such as interface builder) you're out of
luck if you want a gui and you don't have sighted help. On the other hand,
it's possible to build and distribute apps built with other technologies such
as java, without any sighted assistance at all, since java has some gui
layouts that will do the work for you. Then, there's the rennasaince
development tools, which you can use to generate gui screens for you without
need of sighted assistance. The latest version of the renasaince system only
works on 10.6 and later (so leopard/tiger is out) but if you're on snow
leopard or lion, that's not a problem.
On the other hand (have I run out of hands yet?)
There's always apple scripts for simple tasks, which can generate a limited
gui for small programs, and there's always terminal programs wich are of
course not tied to any gui at all, and can be anything you like.
The long and short of it is, if you want to use apple tools, and you want to
build from scratch, you'll need sighted help (and fairly knowledgeable help
at that) to do the job. If you're modifying existing things, or using java,
you're fine. If you're using something else, then it's possible you can do
it alone, but most of the time, development environments for the mac tend to
forget there's such thing as a non-gui interface, and we're sunk on those
systems, but if you search hard enough, you may find something that works.

It's a great shame this is happening.

as an IT Tech, there's times I'd like to tether my iphone to the mac as a quick
modem where internet access isn't available, especially when getting hold of
drivers or emergency files, etc. I don't want to be in the position of paying
stupid money for a 2nd setup. especially USB internet solutions where they are
unreliable at best.

someone give me a bow and arrow and point me in the direction of the fella who
decided to kill this internet tethering solution. BAH HUMBUG!

Re: Mac feel natural

2011-11-26 Thread Lewis Alexander
It's alright garth, no worries.

to be honest, you've just cheered me up lol. Running the organization is a
stressful thing, especially when it comes to contact with companies, supply
chains and clearance bases for parts, machines, software, etc.

I agree on the points you've raised.

the whole ppoint of a computer or data system is the development and use of a
HUI (Human user interface)

going back to the days when the mouse slowly crept into system use, everything
was purely keyboard based to run applications, perform simple and complex tasks.

moving through the years, IT has changed dramatically, from OS implementation,
accessibility and so much more, so yes there's going to be a point where we VI
and blind users have a difficult time mastering the various shortcuts for a
screen reader as well as the OS in general.

I can refer to my days for a while using JAWS as well as system programming,
etc. If anyone asked me how to use jaws these days, I'd have no clue. I can't
even remember the windows shortcut mappings anymore, so need to study again lol.

when it comes to the iphone, ipad, etc, this is another step forward indeed. we
now have a tactile interface to a screen reader. Reach out and touch design
certainly opens up new doors to mobile devices and makes a massive game change
and I'm glad to say. I love it.

On a design thought, why not give the macbook pro a boost. give us a touch
screen interface as well as the usual keyboard and mouse interface. it would
give us a better feel and understanding of what is actually on screen rather
than just listening to the UI through shortcuts. that's one of the points
behind the iphone and ipad and it's a winner for me.

anyway enough from me. people to contact, a part lookup to do and a request for
an old apple powerbook display for a broken powerbook about to be assigned to a
new owner.

take care all and it's nice to have a home here to help.

you're forgetting. Apple is based in the USA, so it has it's rights to launch
the product at first hand in the USA before shipping over the world. this is so
that if there are initial problems, then it can be dealt with. not only that,
but this is also a supported contractual agreement between apple and any other
3rd parties and support infrastructures.

I know that feeling only too well. It's like trying to get parts for the

it's like when someone produces a new piece of kit, we wait while it's in their

Re: iTunes Match

2011-11-26 Thread Lewis Alexander
I agree on that one. Think about it, apple are international, so you'd think
that as a product or service rolls out, we'd all see a benefit of it. sadly
even here it's not the case. take as an example. iphone 4s pay and go with O2.
not available till new year or just after... why? apparently it's due to supply
and demand.

the whole ppoint of a computer or data system is the development and

going back to the days when the mouse slowly crept into system use,
everything was purely keyboard based to run applications, perform
 simple and complex tasks.

moving through the years, IT has changed dramatically, from OS

to be a point where we VI and blind users have a difficult time
mastering the various shortcuts for a screen reader as well as the OS in

I can refer to my days for a while using JAWS as well as system

 indeed.
we now have a tactile interface to a screen reader. Reach out and touch
design certainly opens up new doors to mobile devices and makes a
massive game change and I'm glad to say. I love it.

On a design thought, why not give the macbook pro a boost. give us a
touch screen interface as well as the usual keyboard and mouse
interface. it would give us a better feel and understanding of what is
actually on screen rather than just listening to the UI through
shortcuts. that's one of the points behind the iphone and ipad and it's a
 winner for me.

Re: Reaper, Mixers, Line-ins and stuff

2011-11-25 Thread Lewis Alexander
OK.

I'm sorry to have to say this, but please people, stop this bloomin ridiculous
argument over reaper and audio hardware. OK I have played my part in this by
correcting issues and offering advice where I may but from this point forward,
I am pulling out.

I don't wish to switch on my mac first thing in the morning to read rebuttals
regarding an audio interface or reaper where it comes to quality issues.

I will from an OOFFICIAL standpoint say this having been an audio professional
for several years. At the end of the day, depending on your budget, you can
still produce professional results with a reasonably cheap mic or line in
source, decent cables, a decent recording interface, even griffin iMic can
handle it, etc and use reaper with EQ, reerb, compressors, and the likes of to
get a decent recording done for clients, internet broadcasts, etc.

So please people stop this, I'm getting a little tired of it and I'm no
moderator, just a technician sitting on the fence.

yours with concern.

Yep its true that most people probably would be satisfied with an Imic for
general recording/playback use but it ain't gonna get you too far when using
 Reaper.

Second to this stroll into your local computer shop here at any rate, ask for
an Imic sound device and see how far you get, most likely you'll either end
up walking out the door without a sound card or walking out the door with a
sound device for the same amount of money which does far mor so when i talk
about professional sound devices now I'm talking about something which is
usually in stock and readily available, a standard piece of computer
 equipment nowadays etc.

Also remember that the Imic is 6 years old, a great device but technology has
moved on since that time. The Imic is a Classic design but we've moved on,
we've advanced thus have sound devices acquired more power and more
flexibility so feel free to explore the big wide world and see what you find

I know it isn't a professional card; but my point was that you were talking
about basic line recording. I'm not disputing the assertion that it's not
the best piece of hardware in the world. I was just making the comment that
most people would be happy with what it turns out if they only wanted basic
line recording, no MIDI, not professional stuff; just basic line out that's
 isolated from the Mac.

 That was my only point.

 Hi Folks!

Sorry for the change in subject line but it probably better reflects the
thread in any case because several issues need to be addressed here.

Sorry too! for losing the original message of Lynne's I intended to reply to.

In short she suggested the Imic as a sound card to use with Reaper Audio but
Reaper audio has far more capabilities than the Imic can cater for thus
you're not going to get the full benefit out of an Imic so in a way Lew is
 quite right.

The Imic is exactly what it is, a very basic but good quality audio analogue
line-in/microphone/line-out solution and yep! I use them here as they're
extremely useful as a second sound device on a Notebook where I need to do
 analogue recording.

The Imic is limited however in its quality, it does not for example support
the professional sampling rates of 96KHZ and I don't think it even supports
24-bit sound format and this is where things like the Fastrak USB mixer I
have and many other modern-day sound devices come into their own, they
handle multi track audio rather than just the 2 channel audio.

I'm going to leave Midi out of the conversation for now as its a totally
 different area of recording altogether.

Line-in can be an analogue or a digital type and my Fastrak mixer supports a
digital line-in facility though not an analogue.

Many musical instruments support digital line-out these days so the mixer
would plug straight into those. Again when I'm talking musical instruments
in this sense I'm not talking Midi.

The mixer also has a XLR connector which can be configured for various
microphone types including powered and non-powered microphones.

Add to that an audiophile set of analogue line outs for connecting to an amp
or another panel and a separate headphone out amp for monitoring and cuing
then you have a pretty powerful beast to play with when using Reaper.

Re: two more questions

2011-11-24 Thread Lewis Alexander
ok let's see what we can do here.

first off, voiceover can cut out mid sentence if as an example, another voice
(system clock or announcement) trips the voiceover reading method as the speech
synthesis server is running multiple instances and trips.

Text edit can be the default app for documents you want to use. Here's a user
tip for this.
go to a doc file. VO - SHIFT - M to call up the right click menu, arrow down to
open with, right arrow, this then give you options to open either with the
suggested app or something else compatible with the files, go to OTHER this
opens a dialogue to select the app in question. go to text edit, then voiceover
around the window until you find a checkbox saying make this the default app.
ensure this is checked (VO Space) then OK. done.

TADA.

lol

Re: Distribution List and EBlasts

2011-11-24 Thread Lewis Alexander
sara that was a joke lol SCSI POST? Serial Mail? Serial versus SCSI connectors.

Acutally it's a way to send EBlasts. you create your distribution list in the
address book and it parses out the thing in the too field so each name is a
seprate message. I don't know what scussy mail is but I assume it does the
 same thing.

It is donation ware serial mail is and for any amount you get a key. and the
dev is wonderful to work with.

 Take care.

sorry for the following. it was begging to be said for about 0.3 seconds.

 serialmail is like SCSI post,

serialmail is an app designed to work with mail to gether mail addresses for
users for on the go quick mailing. helpful for organisations, schools,
meetings, etc where quick data is useful.

I would just use serial mail as some ISPs will trigger a spam when you try
and send to more then x number of people. Serial mail will parse out the
group and put the people in to there separate to field. No spam and I
managed to send to about 30 people a week using this method.

I do have to say that the group creating is now a lot easier in lion then
 it ever was in snl.
 Take care.

I have just managed to set up my first distribution list with address
 book and Mail.
There are some options specifically for distribution lists which you can
bring up in address book when you bring up the context menu so the
concept of distribution is definitely a Mac as well as a Windows one.
two hurdles I encountered when I did this war firstly that navigating
the between the group , seemed difficult despite tabbing and
interacting. I eventually closed Address book and was then able to find
the table of group I had created to paste the contacts in. The new ease
of non contiguous item selection in Lion proved very useful here. Not
having to mess around with cursor tracking was a bonus. Secondly
initially, the distribution list appeared not to work. What I did was
set up the distribution list in address Book and then elect email from
the context menu on the group. This would not work.
What I found in my case was that I had to close both address book and
mail. However on opening mail again I was then able to type in the group
name into the to edit box and mail dutifully added all the maims from the
address book. So what happened was I typed LVFMC which was my group
name and pressed enter. Mail then populated the to edit boxes with all
the necessary addresses. It may be that it will now work from Address
Book and that mail has to restart to find the group set up by address
book before all is smooth. .
Thanks to the lister who posted this question as it has prompted me to
 sort it out for myself.
