Re: What's the easiest way to remove my old iPhone from my list of devices?

2015-09-26 Thread Alex Hall
If you tab, that might work. I'm not sure why you're seeing that behavior and
I'm not. If you stop interacting once, does that take you out of the table?
I've never had a problem with doing this, and I've tried it on every OS since
10.7, so I'm not sure what other suggestions to offer. As others have said
though, online articles seem to suggest that just disabling Find My iPhone and
iCloud overall on the device in question will do this automatically, so you
could just try that and then use iCloud.com to verify that the device is gone.

How does one just interact with Services?

Installing Windows on Mac Question

2015-09-26 Thread Mauricio Molina
Hello all,

Before I ask my question, I want to provide the following information: I
have been a Windows user for quite some time and would like to continue to
do so. I have also recently taken up the Mac and have been fortunate enough
to have an older MacBook Pro given to me while I learn this operating
system. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that the older MacBook Pro at
my disposal cannot be updated beyond OSX 10.6. On the Windows side my
preferred screen reader is JAWS but I also have NVDA and Window-Eyes
installed. I would like to add right here that I really do not want to make
this a Mac versus PC conversation; as a blind computer I am grateful that I
have access to both.

Question

I was considering acquiring both a new Windows 10 laptop as well as a new
MacBook Pro. But since I am not independently wealthy, I wondered if it
would not be more cost effective purchasing only the MacBook Pro and then
installing Windows on that system. I would like to know how well Windows
runs on the Mac and get an idea of the difficulty of actually accomplishing
this feat. Additionally, are there any recommended specs, such as the amount
of RAM or preferred processor, for this type of setup? I am fairly competent
with a Windows PC but still consider myself a novice on the Mac; either may
or may not be of help during the process of installing Windows on a Mac. Any
suggestions and/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mauricio

Re: Really odd situation with app updates on I O S9

Though it might be a pain, I forgot that someone did fix this issue simply by
resetting network settings. Definitely give it a try and let Alyssa know if
that resolves it for you. It would be an interesting fix however.

The only concern which I have with doing that is it will reset where I'll have
to repare my phone to my grandmother's car, and believe me, she's so nontech
savvy, it was a major pain in the ass trying to explain to her on her dashboard

Hey Chris. This may or may not help, but anyway, I've heard people in other
mailing lists having similar problems like this in iOS 9. Fortunately I'm not
one of those people, but anyway, one of the suggestions someone brought up was
to try resetting network settings, and for those people that fixed the issue. I
know you may be connected to multiple wifi accounts, but give that a try.

and updates. I now see that even though all apps are up to date on my mac,
there were initially 12 updates on my IPad. When I went to the updates tab on
my IPad, and hit update all, the button would dim itself for a split second,
then would go right back to being tappable again. After literally about the
tenth or so attempt, it finally took, but now it's down to just one update. I
looked at all the updates on my device, and none of them say downloading,
installing, nor waiting. I've resprung and even totally rebooted my device
with no success. I have tried, in ITunes, syncing the device, but that didn't
help either.

When I look in the app store itself, it tells me the last update was done
today, and it appears all apps are up to date. I disabled badges on the app
store icon, then re-enabled it, just in case something needed to be refreshed.
I also cleared all instances from the app store out of my notification center,
which didn't help.

I'm totally at a loss. Any ideas?

Chris.

Re: Really odd situation with app updates on I O S9

2015-09-26 Thread Shawn Krasniuk

Syncing Weirdness continues

2015-09-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK, this has been going on for a while now, and I've not said anything on list
about it, as I was hoping that Apple Support and I could both get to the bottom
of this. Frankly, the senior tech I'm working with, as well as myself are both
incredibly stumped on this one.

I have ICloud Music enabled on my mac, which again, is running OSX 10.10.5
Yosemite, and ITunes 12.3. It's important that I also let you all know that
this problem I'm fixing to describe is happening on all three of my I O S
devices, all of which are running the I O S 9.0.1 official release. therefore,
I have narrowed down that this doesn't appear to be device specific.

I had an mp3 which a friend sent me of his band. I got it imported into my
ITunes. Before anyone asks, yes. The meta ID3 tag data was all encoded
correctly into the file. Once I imported the track into ITunes, I went to the
file menu, and then to library/Update ICloud Library. I was able to see in the
activity popover that the song did successfully get uploaded to ICloud. When
in song view, I am able to see in the ICloud status column that it has been
successfully uploaded. I also see this in the details screen under "Get info"
for that track. It also shows under downloaded status, "Local". Along with
this, are other songs which I've not necessarily downloaded for offline
playing, but I've added to my ICloud library for streaming through Apple Music.
Currently, I am subscribed to the $14.99 Family plan.

On all of my I O S devices, I have them set to show all music, including that
in the cloud, not just on my device locally. I have well enough space left on
the devices to hold this one track. Trust me, I looked. Also on the devices
under Apps and ITunes Store settings, I have Music enabled.

Now, here's the weird thing. Try as I may, with ITunes, syncing, and updating
the ICloud library, none of my music from ICloud is syncing down to any of my
devices. No, I don't have ITunes Match, just Apple Music. No, my Apple Music
has not expired, and I have well plenty of ICloud storage space capassity right
now. I confirmed this as well, so that's not the problem, believe me. When I
bring up the settings for all of my ICloud devices, it indicates that ICloud
Music is enabled, therefore my phone will grab items from ICloud. Again this
isn't happening. It's not even just this one song. None a my music from Apple
Music that I've added to my ICloud library is showing up on any of my I O S
devices either. I even have tried using my super drive, and importing a very
very well known store bought CD I own into my library, then getting it to
transfer over. Even that isn't working.

I can see all of the items on my mac in ITunes with no problem, and all of the
tracks play flawlessly. I just can't for the life a me get them to sync over
to my I O S devices, try as I may! Has anyone seen this in I O S 9, and short
of the trouble shooting I already've done, any other suggestions? I've even
deleted my library extras, and library genious ITDB and my Library ITL files,
and let ITunes rebuild them from scratch. I've also deleted my ITunes.PList
preferences file, just in case it was corrupted, and that didn't work either.

The only thing I've not done is to run a permissions repair on my hard drive,
which is the next thing I'm gonna do. If that doesn't work though, then I'm
totally clueless!

Of corse, yes, I've rebooted the devices, and the mac both. Many many times.

Guys, I... I yai yai! I'm at my whit's end! Any ideas?

Chris.

Re: Dictation using the Macmini

2015-09-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Wow, that's awesome. I wasn't aware that the headphone jack also served as
a mike jack for compatible headsets, such as the Earpods. I knew it worked
that way on portable macbooks, and macbook airs, as well as on all I O S
devices, but that's really cool that you can do that as well on the mac mini
lineup of devices. I'll have to see where I put my earpods and give it a
try. I think I have a few sets on hand. If nothing else, I'll borrow my
mom's. LOL!

What I'd do is plug my apple headphones into the normal headphone socket

I don't have a mike at the moment. However, I could plug-in my apple
headphones which have a mike you know, the one you get with your iPhone.

Re: Voice dream reader voice restoration failed on new phone

2015-09-26 Thread Mary Otten
It looks like I spoke too soon about my restored voices. It appears that there
is a problem with all of the Ivona voices. I have a few of them. And every time
I try to read a book with an Ivona voice, voice dream crashes immediately.
There is some kind of new addition to the ivona a copyright agreement. I was
able to except that by pretending I was going to buy another voice which I
didn't want. But I did except the agreement. Having done that, I tried using
one of my voices. No joy. I uninstalled all of those voices. I reinstalled one.
I restarted the phone. Still no joy. It is apparent that until something
happens on Winston's and, if you have to put voice dream on a new machine and
you have ivona voices, you are going to be SOL. I did try reading with a
different voice from a different manufacturer, and a red fine. So I know the
problem is specifically with voices from ivona.

Mary,

I agree. Sometimes a 5 spot is a good investment in order to avoid further
aggravation. And maybe Sharon will grow on you.

Hi Alan,
As you will see when you read further down in your email, I did finally
resolve my problem. But in order to do it, I ended up buying a new voice. I
tried three different Wi-Fi networks and LTE and nothing helped before I
decided to go ahead and just buy another voice. It was worth the five bucks
to say more hassle.

Re: What's the easiest way to remove my old iPhone from my list of devices?

There's a services group, inside of which is a table of iCloud services.
Interact with that group, but *not* the table. It sounds like you're in the

RE: Voice dream reader voice restoration failed on new phone

2015-09-26 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I got that exact message back in February after getting a new iPhone 6 and
restoring my encrypted backup from iTunes when I went to Voice Dream to
re-Download my purchased voices. The problem eventually resolved itself but
I wrote to Winston at the time and am including his response following my
signature.

Alan

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out.

The voices files are hosted on Amazon. I have heard of these issues, and a
few times I ran into them myself. It's very strange to me. But in all cases,
the problems are results a few days later or on a different network. If this
is not the case, I would like to find out.

In the next update, we're moving to a different type of hosting service on
Amazon. I hope it'll improve things.

Best,

Winston.

Curious if anyone with a new iPhone 6 or 6S has had difficulty restoring
their previously purchased voices to the new phone. I have tried now with
two of them. In both instances, it says voice downloading failed. Try when
you have a better network connection.I have a solid Wi-Fi connection. I am
sitting less than 3 feet from my router. So my network connection is
excellent. I wonder what is going on here. It did not ask me for my iTunes
credentials. Which I thought was interesting. I thought I had to do that
before, but maybe not. Anyway, I can't get my voice is back, and am
wondering if there is a solution, short of writing to Winston and waiting
for a response.

Hi,
Try resetting the old phone to factory settings.
I did that Thursday on an iPad mini2 and it said this will also remove
this device from your account.

What's the easiest way to remove my old iPhone from my list of devices?

2015-09-26 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Trying to remove my old phone from my list of devices, and not having much
luck. So far I have been trying to do it from iCloud.com. Is there a better
way to do this? If not, how do you do it from the website? I've selected my
old phone, and VO says remove Device, but when I press VO-Space or enter,
nothing happens.
TIA,

The strange resolution of my voice dream restoration problem

2015-09-26 Thread Mary Otten
Well, it cost me five dollars, but I got my voice is back. What I finally
decided to do was to try to purchase another voice. I really didn't want any
more voices, but I decided to purchase the Sharon voice. Maybe she will grow on
me, although I rather doubt it. Smile. Even though I thought my device was
already associated with iTunes, since I have been through that process while
doing upgrade, apparently something got lost in translation. Because when I
purchased this voice, I had to go back into the App Store, reconfirm my credit
card by entering the three digit code, and then OK everything. Once that
happened, the purchase went through. After that, I was able to restore voices I
had previously purchased. Go figure
Mary

size of the Plus (was: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s)

2015-09-26 Thread Alex Hall
I don't yet have one, but in preparation for upgrading, I wanted to see how the
Plus would fit into my life. I have a cardboard cutout of a Plus, with some
popsicle sticks taped to the back to give it structure. I carried it for a day,
then attached my iPhone 5 to it for the next day. Both days, I was amazed to
find that the cardboard Plus felt large in my hand, but small in my pocket.
It's very thin and light, and is longer and narrower than you might imagine.
Not being a more boxy shape lets it rest in my pocket better, and I had no
problems with it the two days I tested it with my model. While not an actual
phone, this gave me confidence that the Plus will be just fine, which is good
as it's the one I was leaning towards. The better battery life, larger braille
input area, landscape mode for apps, and image stabilization are all things I'm
looking forward to.

You can easily print out the same template I used, and carry around a cardboard
version of a Plus, to see how it'll work for you. Yes, it might require minor
adjustments in position or grip, but there are definite advantages and I
encourage you to consider the change to a Plus as just that: a change, rather
than looking for something the same size as the 5S but with better internals.
Of course, if the plusses don't outweigh the minuses for you, there's nothing
wrong with the 6S, that's why Apple makes both sizes. Give the Plus a shot
though; you might be pleasantly surprised.

Really odd situation with app updates on I O S9

2015-09-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
This is driving me crazy! I have my IPad Air set to sync with my ITunes 12.3
library on OSX 10.10.5 Yosemite. I have all apps completely up to date on my
mac within Itunes. I also have my mac set up within the apps section of my
IPad to automatically install new apps. I am signed into ICloud both on my
mac, and on my IPad. I have my IPad also set to automatically install apps,
and updates.

Any ideas?

Chris.

Hi. The blue spark is an amazing microphone for the money.

As for a small format mixer, the mackie Onyx line has great microphone
preamps and very nice EQ etc. Have a look at those. The drivers are

Re: Weird Issue with textedit and voiceover.

2015-09-26 Thread Grant
I agree with Anne’s suggestions. I’d also look under the commanders tab and
configure either the keyboard commander, the trackpad commander, or both. For
example, I’ve configured keyboard shortcuts to launch my most frequently used
apps such as RIGHT OPTION + M for mail, RIGHT Option PLUS R for ReadKit, etc..
I’ve also set up RIGHT OPTION + SPACE to toggle whether VoiceOver is muted
because I find it quicker to implement than the default trackpad gesture, a
three finger double-tap. You can also set up a keyboard shortcut to announce
the date and time. That option is under the “custom commands, run AppleScript”
option when adding a new keyboard command. The script you want is in the
VoiceOver folder. You may also wish to add an activity which will set the
verbosity to low when you are in the mail app. If you don’t do this, you’ll
hear “collapsed disclosure triangle” for every thread when in the standard mail
view. I think those are all the options I can think of which I would configure
right away. These instructions are obviously extremely brief so let me know if
you’d like me to elaborate on any of this. This applies to OS X Yosemite.

Re: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s

2015-09-26 Thread Grant
Whether something is too big or not is obviously subjective, but I do wonder
how the size of the 6Plus and 6S Plus phones makes a difference in every day
usage for VoiceOver users. On the plus side, perhaps for folks who use Braille
screen input, the larger screen real estate you have to work with might make
typing easier. On the other hand, are folks finding the phones easy to carry
when out and about? Do they fit comfortably in your pockets? I use my iPhone 5S
on my commutes and often I don’t even need to take it out of my pocket to use
the touch screen. I have a transit widget that I check to monitor bus departure
times, and I use apps like BlindSquare and Google Maps as well. And of course,
I can listen to music or audiobooks while commuting, too. If I couldn’t carry
the phone in my pocket and had to carry it in a backpack or briefcase, that
would be quite a bit less convenient for me. How do you folks feel about
this—for those who’ve used the larger phones for a year now, do you eventually
adjust to the larger screen size?

Works on both Mac portables I’ve tested here. I can’t find any information on
precisely which models support this feature. See this article for more

Re: Improved speaker on iPhone 6s

2015-09-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
It's definitely just your thought, yes, as I have a 6+, and I wouldn't ask
for anything smaller. I have a 5S as well as a backup phone, and to me,
that thing feels dinky in my hand. It just feels really really teeny. Kind
of reminds me of holding an old cassette tape in my hand. E! Yikes!

Hi!
I am about to order an iphone 6s.
However is it very big?
I have seen the iphone 6 plus and that one is to big for me.
I don’t see no reason for a blind using a 6 plus or 6splus.
But i guess thats just my thoughts.
No judgement behind it.

If you have seen the iPhone 6, the 6S is a sensually the same. There is
apparently a very minor difference, but unless you held the two phones right
together, you would not know it. I agree, that the 6+ is too large at least for
me. I know many people like it because of the bigger battery. But the size is a
dealbreaker in my opinion.

Hi. I can certainly give you some recommendations...

What's your budget?

How many channels of audio do you plan to record at a time?

Cameron.

More on my voice dream voice restoration problem

2015-09-26 Thread Mary Otten
I went to the VoiceStream website, and read in the frequently asked questions
the recommendations for what to do if you were having problems restoring
previously purchased voices. In order to access a different network, which they
recommend if you're having a problem, I turned off Wi-Fi and try to get the
voices using the T-Mobile LTE network. The same result. Downloading failed. I
then re-enabled Wi-Fi and tried downloading again. As was the case with the
very first time I tried downloading a voice, I got to 87%, then I got the
failure notice. Subsequent attempts at downloading result in immediate failure
notice. No 87% no percent of any kind. I can't imagine what's going on here.
But I don't think it is my Wi-Fi network. Again, I have tried with more than
one voice. Only the first attempt at downloading gives me any progress before a
failure notice occurs. I even reentered my iTunes password. If you double tap
on restore voices, even though it doesn't say it is a link, it does ask for
your iTunes password. I should say your iTunes Store password. Anyway, I
reentered that and it's not helping. If anybody has any ideas what I need to
change on this phone, I am all ears.

Re: Dictation using the Macmini

2015-09-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
The reason for this is, it's not a mike jack. It's a line in, which of
corse will have much lower DBFS impedance level.

As for an internal microphone, I don't think so, although that would be
killer if it did.

Re: Touch ID success with new phone

2015-09-26 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Touch ID works absolutely perfectly both on my 5S, and on my 6+. My mom has
just the standard IPhone 6, and I added a fingerprint to her's, so if I need
to ever help her, I don't have to put in her pin every time, and again, over
there it worked flawlessly.

I've heard of people not getting touch ID to work, but what is strange is,
when I ask them to show me it not working, they try to demonstrate it not
working, and as soon as they do, bam! it works correctly every time. So,
I'm not saying I don't believe those who can't get it working, but I do
wonder why not.

Re: iTunes question monitoring update status

This through me at first. What you need to do is, find the search text box.
Then, if you vo+right arrow one time past this, you'll see something that
says activity popover. Press vo+space on this to open it. In here you'll
then find a table which you can interact with to view all updates,
downloads, etc. There should also be a pause/stop progress icon on each
item, and I think even a clear all icon. To leave the popover, just hit
escape.

Re: question re setting up new iPhone

2015-09-26 Thread Sadam Ahmed
After a relatively painless pre order process I got mine on launch day.

Glad I got it online as the Apple store was like a zoo.

Overall I really like this update.

Yours truly,

Voice dream reader voice restoration failed on new phone

2015-09-26 Thread Mary Otten
Curious if anyone with a new iPhone 6 or 6S has had difficulty restoring their
previously purchased voices to the new phone. I have tried now with two of
them. In both instances, it says voice downloading failed. Try when you have a
better network connection.I have a solid Wi-Fi connection. I am sitting less
than 3 feet from my router. So my network connection is excellent. I wonder
what is going on here. It did not ask me for my iTunes credentials. Which I
thought was interesting. I thought I had to do that before, but maybe not.
Anyway, I can't get my voice is back, and am wondering if there is a solution,
short of writing to Winston and waiting for a response.
Mary

Re: Dictation using the Macmini

2015-09-26 Thread Alex Hall
There is, but it's not the same port you'd find on many other computers. It
fits any standard microphone that uses a 3.5mm connection, but it also requires
that that microphone be powered somehow. You might want to grab either a USB
microphone, or a USB sound card into which to plug your existing mic.

Re: iPhone 6s Plus Audio Demonstration

2015-09-26 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Jonathan.

Thanks so much for the demonstration. I have found it very useful and it will
help when I get my new phone. I will listen to your live photo demo too later
on.

Thanks.

Kawal.

Dictation using the Macmini

2015-09-26 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Please could someone tell me if there is a microphone inbuilt in the new Mac
mini as I was trying to dictate but even though I heard the sound, no text
appeared. I bought this one last year around just before Christmas in November.

Thanks.
