[MBZ] C140 Coolant Issues

2008-06-23 Thread TE
Changed my coolant today...

Drained the radiator
Drained the block
Citric acid flush
Drained radiator and block again
Flushed with clean water twice

Go to fill it back up to 16,5l capacity...

Add 2 gal Mercedes antifreeze
1 bottle water wetter
Expansion tank is full

Ran engine to operating temp
Heater on max

Topped up with .25 gal clean water
Expansion tank full

Why am I nowhere close to getting 16,5l?

Re: [MBZ] Muffler O-Rings

2008-06-23 Thread LarryT
Thx Craig -
Can't find where I saw the Hard V Soft o-rings (must of dreamed it) - I need
the donuts for the '91 300D that go at the very end of the rear mufler -
you;re right - no choice. Maybe you can help with the location of the other
muffler hanger shown - perhaps that's the figure 8 you mentioned?

It's p/n H8050-26058 - I;ll order one - but need to figure out where it
goes ;-)

I also need the donuts for the 240D but it's clear where they go -

Thx for the help --

You're going to have to be a little more specific, Larry. According to
Rusty's website, there are no muffler o-rings.

For the '78 240D, there is a muffler hanger (commonly called donut),
 pictured at http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/H805025717.JPG
(unfortunately, a poor picture) that's used to suspend the rear part of
 the exhaust system.

I don't see a choice between hard and soft.

For the '91 300D/2.5, there is an exhaust hanger at
 http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/H805026058AFT.JPG and an Exhaust
Hanger Soft Compound Small round at
 http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/H805014328.JPG

These two do not look at all like each other.

In the past, I've seen a choice between plain round ones like

 http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/H805014328.JPG

and ones shaped more like a figure-8 like

 http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/H805025717.JPG

for W123s. The plain round ones are easier to install and the figure-8
ones keep the muffler from bouncing around as much.

BartPE can be intimidating for casual users. You have to load it with
appropriate Network and Disk drivers and regenerate the disk image. If
anyone needs a special config, I can create an ISO and let you
download it.

  Suggestions?

Search on Hitachi's website for the manual on the
 disk. That will tell you
where the jumpers need to be.

Shut down the computer and boot into your BIOS
 screen. Look for two disks
listed, one of which may be the Hitachi. If both
 disks show up, your
 jumpers are correct.

Before XP will allow you to use it, you need to
 format it and then tell
the system where to mount it. I've done it in the
 past, but I don't recall
the steps. As I recall, the information about the
 steps was hard to
 locate.

Keeping Track of the Facts on Chrysler LLC

As the industry goes through a period of great change and a slowing economy,
we all face difficult questions about the status of the industry and our
company. Following are a number of the leading subjects that come up in the
media and in our daily conversations, as well as information you need to
know and share:

The State of the U.S. Auto Industry in 2008

* Our full year plan for the market in 2008 has been aggressively
conservative, allowing us to be better positioned for the current slowdown.
We are clearly in a challenging environment, but continue to be focused on
building a profitable enterprise for the long term.
* We are committed to good business practices despite the market
slowdown such as reducing fleet sales (volume down more than 20% YTD) and
dealer inventory (volume is down 67,000 units from a year ago).

The State of Chrysler

* As a private company, we are like a $60 billion startup with a real
owner-operator mentality.
* Despite the challenges, we are meeting or exceeding our financial
targets.
* According to Bob Nardelli (in The Wall Street Journal), “Cerberus
nor its backers are second-guessing the deal. They are not looking back.”
* According to Tim Price, Cerberus spokesman, “We are comfortable. We
are long-term investors. Chrysler is ahead of its cash flow forecast by $1
billion.”
* We currently have our top 300 leaders going through a comprehensive
leadership development program consisting of five segments focusing on
strategic thinking, operating excellence and leadership.
* We are developing project-specific alliances to help bring the
world’s best technology to our customers, as soon as possible. Examples
range from working with Nissan on a new small car for global markets to
partnering with GM, Daimler and BMW on hybrid technology.
* We enacted a 5 percent cost reduction on certain nonproduction
materials and services as a part of ongoing efforts to reduce our cost
footprint in a highly competitive marketplace.

Chrysler’s Sales in 2008

* Worldwide sales are down 14% YTD, which includes YTD increases in
Canada, Mexico and International Markets. Fleet sales in the U.S. were down
40% in May and 23% for the year.
* Sales are rising for new products, such as Dodge Journey (2nd best
selling mid-size crossover in May), Dodge Avenger (+15% YTD), Dodge Caliber
(+9% YTD), Chrysler Sebring Sedan/Convertible (+11% YTD), and Jeep
Patriot/Compass (+65% YTD).
* Our long-wheelbase minivans’ U.S. retail sales are up 30% YTD, and
retail share is up.
* In Canada, Chrysler is the #2 best selling manufacturer in the
country, and up 5.5% YTD.
* In Mexico, Chrysler’s sales are up 5.1% YTD.
* Outside North America, Chrysler’s international sales are up 8% YTD,
with markets like China and Russia becoming a larger part of our business.
* Dealers have embraced Project Genesis, and we are making progress in
transforming the U.S. dealer network. Through May, 58% of our dealers are
tri-branded, compared to 50% a year ago. In the U.S., we now have 3,488
dealers, down from a year ago 3,684.

Chrysler’s Alignment with Marketplace

* Chrysler is better aligned than previously for the shift towards
smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles. We also believe there is a strong
and viable pickup truck market going forward.
* Through May, our U.S. sales were 41% pickup trucks and traditional
SUVs, and 59% cars, car-based crossovers, compact vehicles and minivans.
(Industry is at 33%/67% ratio)
* Chrysler has six vehicles that achieve 28 mpg on the highway: Dodge
Caliber, Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Jeep
Patriot and Jeep Compass.

Chrysler’s Launch Lineup for 2008
These new vehicles have competitive advantages and are well-suited for
today’s marketplace:

*   Dodge Journey -- A crossover with class–leading (25 mpg) with a
4-cylinder engine.
* Chrysler Aspen/Dodge Durango Hybrids – Full-size SUVs offering up to
40% improved fuel economy in the city at a price thousands of dollars less
than the compeition.
* 2009 Dodge Ram –- There is no better way to fight truck buyer
malaise than with our best truck lineup ever boasting breakthrough new
features. The new Dodge Ram lineup will also soon add optional light-duty
diesel and hybrid powertrain options.
*   Dodge

Measure between wire and compressor case. I am not sure about the 190D
 but
some compressors use case as ground and only one wire for clutch. Some
compressors have a pressure switch for other wire or a sensor which
 detects
 if compressor is turning.

Of the three wires on my 190D compressor, one is to the clutch
(returning via case ground), the other two are its tachometer.
All vitally important for the system as designed.

Government is a necessary evil. The more it sticks its nose where it
is not necessary for it to be involved, the more evil it becomes. The
problem is coming to an agreement over just what is a necessary gov't
 function.

If more people would actually think about the fact that any
government collects _all_ of the money required to do its business
at gunpoint then this controversy would quiet down a lot. If
any proposed function is _not_ worth the real threat of bodily
injury or death to support then it should _not_ be a function
of government.

[MBZ] OT Torque Wrench Question

2008-06-23 Thread R A Bennell
I'm changing the pinion seal on my Supercrew. The manual says to use a torque
wrench and check to see how much
torque it takes to turn the flange after supporting on jack stands and removal
of the rear wheels and the drive
shaft. It also says to count the threads exposed. Then it says to remove the
nut etc and replace the seal. It then
says to re-install the flange and nut and tighten to the number of threads,
check the torque to turn and tighten in
increments until there is about 5 inch pounds more drag than previous to
account for the new seal.

Sounds easy until you try to do it. It takes very little effort to turn the
flange and the result is that none of
the torque wrenches that I have will do. I made some calls this morning and
determined that any sort of low torque
wrench or driver is very expensive. Not worthwhile for something I will seldom
use.

So, the question is whether anyone has any good ideas as to how else one might
test and reset to similar torque
value. I know that the garages just crank it on and don't worry about it and
that is what I will do if need be. I
can just tighten to the a5 exposed threads and will be pretty close. However, I
would do it the right way if
possible.

One thing I believe I have seen is the use of a spring scale to test the
pre-load on front wheel bearings. I
believe the manual for our old Toyota 4Runner suggests that as the proper
manner to test for preload. That might be
possible but I suspect I would need a fairly light spring scale as it really
takes very little effort to turn the
flange.

I suppose another idea might be a lever bolted to the flange and hanging
weights on it to see what weight is
required to make it turn.

Anyone got better ideas?

Randy

[MBZ] 190D

2008-06-23 Thread LarryT
I spotted a 190D over the weekend - not sure what year it is but I believe
its been on the used car lot for a year of so - along with most of their
other W126 and W116 diesel sedans. There's also a W140 Diesel but they were
not open so I did not find the history of each - but the paint on all was
badly oxidized.

So, what kind of fuel mileage is a late 80s 190D with AT likely to get -
assuming the engine is in typical condition? I've heard ya'll mention
amazing MPGs for 190ds with Manual trannies -

Also what typical problems areas are there in the 190D?

about 50%.

Trouble: Cooling system must be kept at correct Ph or you will junk the engine
with cavitation.
Wiring for GPlugs and injectors go under valve covers, last about 150Kmi, very
expensive to change. Mine was $1800 at a very trusted Indy.
E40D tranny need o'haul at 150Kmi. I had a Ford warranted (3yr 75Kmi)

The below is so very true.  The self reliance shown by people of the mid-west
stands so far apart from the 'people' in N.O. that were in the exact same
situation.  I say again, THE EXACT SAME SITUATION!!!

Also, there was / is zero looting.  I have pretty much given up hope for the

[MBZ] '87 300D monovalve weirdness

2008-06-23 Thread Alex Chamberlain
I've been suspecting for a while now that my W124 300D's monovalve is
stuck partway open, with a couple of different symptoms pointing to
the same thing (A/C not blowing as cool as it should although the rest
of the system checks out OK, and uneven heat at idle and on
acceleration from a stop).

I put a pair of hose pliers on the hose from the monovalve to the
heater core to get some cool air from the A/C since it was a hot day.
The pliers are as tight as can be, but I'm still getting lukewarm air,
and when I turn the temp control knob up to full heat I get HOT air!
What the heck is going on? Is there any other way for warm coolant to
get into the heater core? Air direction problem (i.e. vacuum flaps
not doing their job)? I thought by pinching the hose on either side
of the monovalve I should be doing what the valve is designed to do
when full cooling is called for, i.e. let the air cooled by passing
through the evaporator stay cool (and thereby also there shouldn't be
any way to get hot air either). Somebody enlighten me.

That sounded like such a potential happy ending that I ran outside to

definitely only the two hoses, one going towards the firewall (into

[MBZ] Iowa Flooding

2008-06-23 Thread Dan Weeks
As a Des Moines resident, I've got to say that as bad as the iowa
flooding is, it in no way compares in scale or severity to New
Orleans and Katrina. Many fewer people affected, much more notice, a
FEMA that learned a few things after Katrina, much less population
density, more routes out. Also, the memory of the 1993 floods here is
still fresh, and people knew to take this seriously. The two
situations are just not comparable, for many more than purely
cultural differences.

16,5L is nearly 4 gallons, and I don't think it holds that much, more
like12L -- the radiator would need to be HUGE to hold 2 gal of coolant!

Did you burp it? Squeeze the upper radiator hose flat, crimp the
line from the top of the radiator to the reserve tank shut, and then
let go of the radiator hose. This will draw coolant through the
block from the bottom hose on the tank. Repeat until the level no
longer drops in the tank, adding coolant as necessary.

No, the 300D has only to connections, the later W124's have a split
core.

Your clamp is leaking -- remember, there is a pump pushing the
coolant throught.

Clamp the hose going into the heater core, up by the brake booster as
well. Flat jaw vise grips work the best.

What I was (not so politely) getting at was GWB has spent half a trillion
dollars or so,
and over six years, with military and CIA, trying to get Bin Laden, with no
better result
than Clinton had.

Worse yet, Reagan used the CIA to train and equip Bin Laden, so it's really
hard to blame
Clinton for the various attacks on the WTC. I used to watch those PSAs on TV
six years ago:
Want to help finance international terrorism? If you buy illegal drugs, you
probably
already do, and I'd think to myself: Want to help finance international
terrorism? If you
pay federal taxes, you already do. Same thing with the Taliban, as long as
they were
attacking the Soviets, their activities were fine with us.

As far as ability to protect our own sovereign soil is concerned, I believe the
USA military
is currently in the worst shape it's been in for decades. Can't blame Clinton
for that either.
Mr You support our troops while I give them the shaft is more to blame for
that.

Huh, OK. This car was a rental from July through February, and got
eight thousand miles on it. Seems low. What do y'all think? Fishy?

The next to last entry above is the dealer on whose lot it is sitting
right now, and the current mileage is 8,400 and change. 200 miles of
test driving in three months? That part sounds reasonable. But why
did they retitle it as a rental, or is that a mistake? At least if
they've had it in inventory for three months and haven't been able to
move it, that gives me a good bargaining chip.

Ever feel like Carfax brings up more questions than it answers?

Use one of the little food weighing scales that read up to 1lb. to
push a wrench, and read the ounces? They're relatively cheap. You
really only need relative readings, so absolute accuracy isn't an
issue.

The salesperson referred to it as a program car, which I know
theoretically means a car lent to an exec or used for some promotional

low-mileage rentals and lease returns are also often described that

I put the hard hangers on my 240D when I installed the new exhaust a couple
weeks ago. I did it because I figured they might last a bit longer than the
donuts. I think somebody said they might have chain inside the rubber.
The ones I installed are really tight and the rear muffler is now rubbing
against its heatshield and making a noise at idle. I think once the system
warms up completely they'll sag a bit and won't be a problem. If that doesn't
work I'd bought some of the soft donuts and I'll use those instead and try the
hard ones on my 190D.

Re: [MBZ] Muffler O-Rings

2008-06-23 Thread Jim Cathey
The ones I installed are really tight and the rear muffler is now
rubbing against its heatshield and making a noise at idle.

There's a rubber bumper above the muffler that's supposed to
prevent that.

Re: [MBZ] OT Torque Wrench Question

2008-06-23 Thread Jim Cathey
One would wonder how they made the first one ?

Easy. A spring scale or weight pulling on the end of
a fixed wrench. Torque is force applied at a distance
from an axle of some sort. I used a common fishing
scale (pull spring) when I tried to do this job.

[MBZ] Okay brain trust

2008-06-23 Thread Curt Raymond
I've got next week off from work and need to get Hammie the 240D roadworthy.
The two big projects are a new hood (relatively easy) and getting the door
locks to work. Neither works at all, the driver's lock barely budges at all,
the passenger's side turns a little.
I can't take the door handle off without being able to turn the lock...

So if I cut the shaft from the lock to the locking mechanism do I have a hope
of being able to get a new one or repair this one? Meaning if I cut it will I
really have screwed myself?

My wife can't be driving a car that has doors she can't lock...

The new Dodge Ram -- a game-changer

Dear Colleagues,

The countdown begins.

Yesterday marked 100 days until the Marketing launch of the all-new 2009
Dodge Ram 1500, a vehicle that truly stands apart from the competition.

Since the dawn of the big rig look, the Dodge Ram has always been a
game-changer. This new truck is no different. With a typically bold Dodge
exterior design, a crafted and refined interior, engineering excellence,
superb innovation and best-in-class features and amenities, this truck is
ready for demanding truck buyers. Below are just a few facts to consider and
share:

* First-for-Ram crew cab model, giving Dodge an entry into the largest
and fastest-growing part of the market
*   First-in-segment coil-spring, multilink rear suspension fitted to a
solid rear axle provides superb ride and handling without sacrificing truck
capability
* Industry-first RamBox cargo management system (crew cab) includes
versatile, weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage; pickup
bed divider; 2-foot bed extender; and cargo rail system with four sliding,
adjustable cleats
* Segment exclusive “store in the floor” storage bins with removable
liners, big enough for ten 12-ounce beverages and ice
* New 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 provides more horsepower and more torque
with improved fuel economy
*   Segment-exclusive chrome-tipped dual exhaust styled dramatically
into the rear bumper
* Safety is standard with more than 30 safety features, including
standard four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System and Electronic Stability Program
with Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control
* More than 35 new or improved features

And the list goes on.

No one will dispute the fact that this is a challenging market in which to
launch a new pickup truck, but light-duty pickups still comprise one of the
largest and most profitable vehicle segments in the automotive market.

We all should be extremely proud of this truck. The whole team has worked
very hard to put the best possible Dodge Ram on the market –- one that is
truly bold, powerful and capable. With this truck, we can be confident that
we will increase our share of the light-duty truck market.

Let's all do our part to help build excitement for the launch of a truck
that is sure to be a standout in the segment –- the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500.

Sincerely,

Mike Accavitti

I think the official term is blowback.

We are reaping quite a bit of the harvest we sowed during the cold
war -- much of which was to benefit the makers of military equipment.

I won't contiue, it's been a good day and I don't want to mess it up.

when you cut hum intelligence assets dramatically.

What I was (not so politely) getting at was GWB has spent half a
 trillion dollars or so,
and over six years, with military and CIA, trying to get Bin Laden,
 with no better result
 than Clinton had.

Worse yet, Reagan used the CIA to train and equip Bin Laden, so
 it's really hard to blame
Clinton for the various attacks on the WTC. I used to watch those
PSAs on TV six years ago:
Want to help finance international terrorism? If you buy illegal
 drugs, you probably
already do, and I'd think to myself: Want to help finance
 international terrorism? If you
pay federal taxes, you already do. Same thing with the Taliban, as
 long as they were
attacking the Soviets, their activities were fine with us.

As far as ability to protect our own sovereign soil is concerned, I
 believe the USA military
is currently in the worst shape it's been in for decades. Can't
 blame Clinton for that either.
Mr You support our troops while I give them the shaft is more to
 blame for that.

Check the condition of the rubber pad the muffler sits up against on
that model. There is a flat on the front or on the resonator that is
supposed to be pressed up firmly against a rubber pad on the frame.
If the pad is gone (likely) it will rattle, and if the pipes are
sagging, it may also drum.

.03vac instead of the required .3vac. Measuring resistance gave me 620ohms,
which is within range. So, that leads me to belive that according to 1986.pdf,
starting at page 9 (found here: www.gulseth.net/benz/1986.pdf ), the Klima
relay is bad. Thoughts? Do I need to replace the a/c RPM sensor?

Six or seven years ago, I purchased for my 81 300D a NEW door handle
assembly from Caliber Motors in CA with factory original locking cylinder,
key, etc. I think I vaguely remember that I got a coupla handle assemblies
from salvage yard about the same time. 'Planned to put my cylinders in
them. Meanwhile, while waiting for new handle, I switched all the handles
from left to right, which turned them all over, putting new-looking chrome
visible on top and moved the little-used front passenger lock./handle to the
driver door. This worked so well I never installed the new handle; 'gave it
to buyer of the car 4 yrs ago. I'll look in attic tomorrow to see if I may
have coupla handles.

I've got next week off from work and need to get Hammie the 240D
roadworthy.
The two big projects are a new hood (relatively easy) and getting the door
locks to work. Neither works at all, the driver's lock barely budges at all,
the passenger's side turns a little.
I can't take the door handle off without being able to turn the lock...

So if I cut the shaft from the lock to the locking mechanism do I have a
hope of being able to get a new one or repair this one? Meaning if I cut it
will I really have screwed myself?

My wife can't be driving a car that has doors she can't lock...

can't afford a pickup, just find a nice supermega SUV marked down to $8k

Not having time to look at the innards of our car's doors, I think you
would be wise to not cut it.

But you're not clear what the problem is: Is it the parts inside the door

That'd be great.

I'm reasonably sure if I could get the *%#! thing apart I could free up the
cylinder. The passenger side has been making progress by filling it with
penetrating oil (first PB Blaster, now SeaFoam Deep Creep). I think if I could
soak the cylinder in penetrant it'd free up pretty easily...
