i would doubt it, but maybe. i've always preferred eberspacher on my cars.
it's just made so german like! as much as the german's disturb me and fail
to entertain, at the end of the day, i have a certain fondness for things
germanic. the rifle at my side as i type this is an 8mm bolt action
mauser. mine is serbian, but it still is just so german!

even my stupid saturn is just a rebadged opel and might just have more
german parts on it than a new mercedes.

despite the manifold warnings of the great al cosentino, i also like
stainless steel exhaust systems, but mostly just on account of their
practicality.

There's a small window for arbitrage there, but not much. I think
I've seen Taurus .38 Special revolvers in pawn shops for $200, which
you could probably bargain down to $150.

[MBZ] Continuing mirror madness

2009-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond
Went out to put on that mirror Tom sent me and realized the mounting holes are
way too close together. Looked at the two mirrors together and they're similar
but different. The one from my '83 is definately a refinement, its got a 123
part number and has closer tolerances. The older one has no part number that I
can find anywhere and has larger gaps all around.

Oh well, it was cheap.. Tom said he was using it on his 115 so if anybody has
an early 123 or 115 I've got a good driver's side mirror cheap.

I'll have to see if Marvin is around on Saturday. Maybe I can pop down and grab
one off his '82 240D...

Re: [MBZ] ChowdahQ and the W115 on ebay

2009-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond
Thanks for the kind words Tom, we aim to please.

Actually I can't find that listing now, it must have finished while I wasn't
looking. Theres a 220D on there now with a column shift. I didn't even know
they came with column shift. Its an odd car, basically no rust except for a
hole in the floor which seems quite repairable...
Its about 90 miles from me so I'll just keep an eye on it. I surely don't need
another car but thats so tempting.

Buster had a great time on Saturday. Sunday we went over to Dwight's and he
played with Dwights dogs, Monday he slept all day...

Hi Curt,

Yeah
I see that W115.  That's about 100 miles from me, but I'm keeping an
eye on it.  It may be about the same distance from you, btw.

However,
tomorrow I am getting another ummm... German car of a different
make.  :) so I am in no position to buy.  I'm in enough trouble
already, trust me.

That injection pump issue may scare some
buyers away, though, so it may go cheap but the auction still has 5
days to go.  The W115's are great simple cars, Curt, if you want one,
you should grab it.  The 300D's are all automatics, of course.  Did you
see that he has it listed as a 6 cylinder?  So I am not sure how much
attention he's paid to it, especially since that's a green Roller
parked next to it.  It probably hasn't gotten his undivided attention.
You might get a steal. . and then I'd lose out on the cheapest
jalopy award at next year's ChowdahQ!!

Thanks again,
btw, Curt and Angie, for a great job on the event, and Kudos also to
Dwight, in particular, and Fred and the others who contributed the food
and camaraderie that went into making it a successful event.  Great
cars, nice people and ... well, New England weather.  Sigh.  Well, two
outta three aint bad!  Did I mention the food?  Great food too.

Thanks
for sharing the pics also although I was a little disappointed that
you didn't mention the name of your dog.  For all the viewers, you may
have noticed that there were two of us out there that afternoon in
yellow foul weather gear.  Curt and Angie's dog was the one in the
custom-tailored, flannel-lined Foul Weather gear. (Which looked
Fabulous, btw.)  I was the other one, in the cheap, ill-fitting,
unlined rain slicker.  Oh, and I am the one NOT wearing a leash,
largely because my wife was unable to attend.

And I was
also pleased to have the opportunity to demonstrate the proper method
for shutting down an old Mercedes diesel.  after one has blown
one's injection pump shut-off valve.  It's a vanishing art, but I am
doing my part to keep it from becoming a lost one.

I have been told that rotors from the dealer are always the best.
They somehow last longer than even the most expensive NAPA rotors.
Same with exhaust parts - they just seem to last noticeably longer if
the dealer parts are obtained. This from a guy that replaces a lot of
these parts for a living.

[MBZ] 240D mirror revisited

2009-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond
Poking around my garage the other day I found a can of Rotunda Penetrating oil
http://www.hammar.dyndns.org/ROTUNDA/19a501a.jpg
which looks to be a FoMoCo product.
I like regular can penetrant like this because its easy to get right where you
want it. I filed its presence away in my head for later.

Tonight I grabbed the mirror assembly Tom had sent me and hit the pivot points
with some Rotunda. Its the strangest smelling stuff ever. I don't even have
words to describe what it smells like... Kind of like burning plastic I guess.
Anyway I managed to locate the pivot point I'd broken on my other mirror and
lube it up good. Looking at it now I think I can fix the other one once I drill
out the broken screw...

The Rotunda works really well, about 1 minute on the rusty pivot and the thing
works like new... After dinner I'll install the mirror. It'll be nice to have a
mirror I can put where I want in that car after all these years. Then I need to
pull the switch to the electric mirror apart (again!) and see if I can finally
get it clean enough to work right.

[MBZ] Oil cooler cutout

2009-09-15 Thread Curt Raymond
So after 220 miles of commuting with no oil cooler I'm sure glad to have the
massive oil leak fixed...

That said the car runs noticably hotter now. Used to run most of the time just
above the 80C mark, now its hovering just below the next mark (100C?).
As such I'm guessing in a warmer environment (its cool here right now, mid '70s
high) there could easily be trouble.

Guess you really do need that cooler...

Yup. Mineral oil, sitting in air, things can rust. You end up with leaking
reed valves, therefore low high side pressure.

[MBZ] Compressor death from lack of use?

2009-09-15 Thread andrew strasfogel
When restoring my 1970 280SE coupe back in 1992, I had the old Frigiking AC
blower unit removed and installed (but never wired in) a period Behr AC
purely for looks. The AC system has been nonfuncitonal and devoid of freon
for the past 17 years. A month ago I decided to wire in the Behr blower
unit, and had my mechanic charge the system, convert to R134, and test it.
He says the compressor is "weak"; I only get tepid air at all settings.

My question is whether merely sitting without running all these years would
ruin the compressor. Everything else works (I of course replaced the drier
bottle).

Re: [MBZ] OT Brake Rotor rant

2009-09-15 Thread Peter Frederick

The real problem is not the ease of removal of pads nor the cost of a new rotor
vs turning one, it's that once there is a distinct lip on the rotor, the pads
on the dual piston (not floating piston calipers) will contact the anti-rattle
spring before the friction material is worn off. This will result in seriously
diminished braking, and eventually cause the pistons in the calipers to cock
and bind. The brakes then drag, overheat, and roast the rubber dust boot,
allowing water and dirt into the piston bore, which wrecks the pistons. A
routine pad replacement turns into an expensive caliper replacement job
instead. On any model between the Finny and the W201, this will happen both
front and rear, just the rears on later models.

Rotors last three sets of pads -- when the third set is worn out, get new
rotors. I routinely get 50,000 miles on a set of pads (I'm lucky -- lost of
open road driving AND I drive like a little old man, so little wear), so this
isn't exactly a problem for me. One set of rotors per car now, so far -- none
of them have reached the third pad set. I think the old 300D was getting
close, but I won't be doing brake work on that one any more.

Well, Gump went to the car Dr. this morning.  Had oldest boy fetch me
at 7:10am at the shop and took him to school.  Left the key in the box.

Got home around 7:55, and settled down to breakfast and the paper.  A
bit after 8am call comes in.  Shop can not figure out how to start
her.  Explain the process to the front desk and she passes me to the
lead mechanic.  He knows full well how to start an old diesel, just
can not figure out how to get Gump lit off.  Told him to PULL real
hard after he gets glow.  Says he did but she will not crank.  PULL
REAL HARD, dude.  Tells me that just ain't right but he will give it a
go.

Never did get a call back.  Guess he felt too much the pussy for
calling in the first place.

Ether isn't good. Ether in a glow plug engine is very bad.
In order to start, you need fuel, compression, and heat.

Let's start with heat. The simplest thing to do is to glow for 30
seconds

instead of cranking as soon as the light goes out.

You can unplug the glow plug harness from the glow plug relay, and
jumper

the pins in the connector on the plug harness to test the plugs
individually. You can do this crudely with an ohmmeter, or better
yet, jump
an ammeter between the positive battery terminal and a wire to a
glow plug.
The plug should draw around 20A initially and then taper down to
about 10A
after a few seconds. If you do that with all five, you'll see which
one(s)

don't act right.

If the plugs are all good, plug the connector back into the relay,
turn the

key on, and check for voltage at a glow plug.

Compression: one thing commonly overlooked is valve adjustment. If
your
valves are tight, it's not going to want to start when cold. While
you've
got the valve cover off, slowly turn the engine until the timing
marks line
up on the front cam tower and read the crank position on the crank
damper.
If the crank is five degrees ahead of the cam, you need a new cam
chain.

If the above check out OK, post a follow-up and we'll get into fuel
issues,

starting with the hand primer pump.

Mitch.

Making fuel, or running veggie, requires a supply of veggie oil. In a "Road

EMP will take out the glow plug relays. Starting with the SDs (w116)
and possibly even the 300d w115, there is a 555 timer in the relay.
That will be fried by the EMP. A tired diesel does not like to fire

If you want a sure shot, assuming you are still around and able to

I don't turn a rotor to remove an edge. Mount it on a drive wheel and
spin slowly while I use a 4" disc grinder to remove the edge.

That's what I do. Makes getting the calipers on and off

for 28 dollars, hardly worth messing around turning old rotors, even if they
don't last quite as long. The time you save not running back and forth
getting old rotors turned, you can probably slip another brake job in over
150,000 miles, with less time, and probably not much more money, if any.

It's nice to have all your new parts together gathered at hand, before you
start digging into a project.

This weekend I replaced brakes on Saturday morning on my 97 volvo 960 185K.
Pulled the rear rotors and they had a large ridge (big enough to get really
close to the caliper). Clearly they were the never turned factory rotors
with 185,000 miles. Pulled em off and drove to my local bumper to bumper
(best of the evil parts empire in my town). They said - we don't turn
rotors anymore, but I'll sell you new one for almost the same price as
turning them. Pulled the new ones and they were about twice the price as
turning them, and when we pulled out the micrometer, were actually thinner
then the old ones. I said no thanks. Drove all around town and finally
found a Midas to turn my old rotors. All of the parts stores would sell me
new ones, but didn't turn them anymore, even the stores like NAPA that
primarily cater to repair shops would no longer turn rotors.

Anybody else experience this lately? What are every ones thoughts on new
vs. turning the old. On all of my Lincoln towncar limos the cheap parts
store replacements rotors last for about 25K without warping and they are
then to thin to turn. If I order the rotors from ford, the last about 75K,
which in limo land is only about 18 months.

Thanks for Listening.

The 87 chevy truck has a newish starter on it, probably two years old with
maybe 6000 miles on it.

The solenoid is already failing.

It came from NAPA, who generally has decent stuff, but I've come to dislike

I haven't turned rotors for abou 15 years, I just buy new. My luck in the

properly and true. I'm a bit lazy too, I like working with new clean

My local NAPA turns rotors and drums, but the price is a lot higher than in the
1980s. Carquest has a repair facility and machine shop about 20 miles from here,
all the Carquest stores put machining jobs on the truck and send them to the
central shop.

Last I knew, anybody who did brake work had their own lathe and did not want to
waste time taking rotors to NAPA. You pull the rotors/drums off, and then you
run the lathe while you swap out pads, shoes, springs, etc. The summer I worked
for a towing service we had our own lathe, but the only thing I recall using it
on was our own tow trucks.

I have now replaced three lifetime warrented NAPA alternators in 60k miles. All
installed correctly.
I'm getting pretty sick of replacing them, even though it costs me nothing but
an hour of getting
greasy. Next time, Rusty. (I started this cycle before I joined the list and
knew of Rusty.)

Yes, the resistance of a tungsten filament lamp does increase with
temperature. It's lowest when the lamp is off.

Dwight.
I agree that it looks like the unfortunate mating of Brunhilde and a Boxer
dog!
Them new-fangled French measurements have finally screwed up the
Empire. William the Conquerer finally triumphs!
When I left, everything made sense:- groats, farthings, thrup'ny
bits, tanners, bobs, florins, crowns, pounds and the legal
professions method of extracting an extra fee, Guineas!
We measured in inches, feet, chains, furlongs, miles and leagues.
None o'them sissy French metric bits!
The country has gone to the dogs, I tell 'e.
