It almost looks very similar to the clip thing that goes in the linkage
on a 124 60x vehicle.  I may try one of those.

I would still think this would be in the epc somewhere even if not
available.  I guess the only other thing to do would be to adjust the
linkage to make up for the slop created.

On this 240d the linkage that comes from the pedal has 2 prongs that
stick into the linkage on the engine and should have 2 plastic busing
things in the holes. On this car the plastic parts are mostly missing
so the pedal had to go about half way down before it starts moving
the linkage. I can’t find these plastic pieces anywhere in the epc.
Can anybody else find them?

Re: [MBZ] The copart SD, how to bid

2018-01-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Let me rephrase that, is says to upload a business license or ID.  When
I go to my account page on licenses, it says the image I uploaded is
pending, so I bet I will have to wait until tomorrow to bid.  Hopefully
they get it processed.  I should have done it last week!

They have a licensing page that you can click on your state and OK says
you do not need a business license to bid on cars listed there, same
with LA.

I have highly interested in the rod bender.  The carfax lists an oil
consumption test at around 160k miles, which is right in the rod
bending time frame.  Since it is a 1 owner car, there could be a
chance the engine was replaced around that time.  Especially since the
engine is so clean from what I can tell.  It also appears to have some
sort of sticker on the valve cover, which I have not seen before.

Throw a lowball bid on that Tulsa Bluetec like I said.
Worst thing that can happen is you get stuck with a $500 Bluetec.

If it takes your bid, the problem is with the rodbender listing.
If it won't take your bid, the problem is your account isn't authorized.
If you didn't upload your license when they were open last week,
that's probably the problem.

One way to find out.
https://www.copart.com/lot/50100207
Throw a lowball bid on that Tulsa Bluetec like I said.
Worst thing that can happen is you get stuck with a $500 Bluetec.

If it takes your bid, the problem is with the rodbender listing.
If it won't take your bid, the problem is your account isn't authorized.
If you didn't upload your license when they were open last week, that's
probably the problem.

Yes, it easily dissolves in a gallon of water. It's not a "really" strong
solution.

At CoPart, the best I can usually do is filter a search for 'no license

something just to see if I'm allowed to bid on it.
When I hit the 'no license' checkbox on my watchlist, that SD remains, so it
should be biddable with no license, assuming you are enabled for bidding.

What happens if you throw a $225 bid at this one?

Re: [MBZ] Major disappointment

2018-01-21 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I can tell you all from my time on the inside, working for and with R and
quality departments for 15 years, there is still a tremendous focus on
quality for the new cars. Of course I can't share any details with anyone,
but their quality system is very well designed to ensure an outstanding
product. And its also worth pointing out that a surprising number of
people working at MB, in engineering, also own old Mercedes. Lots of guys
I knew had 108s, 107s, 123s... they get it.

I own a 2011 E350 and am very impressed with it... its hard to believe its
a 7-8 year old car. And thats after driving new Mercedes constantly for
the last 15 years. I chose the car because it was a simple model without
too many options, less to break. Much like you all would have picked a
240D years ago. If you're disappointed with the long-term quality of W220
with air suspension and loads of advanced features, you'd probably would
have been disappointed with a 1972 300SEL 4.5 or a 1979 6.9 in the same
way. If long life and simplicity are important to you, then shop for a car
with longevity in mind and you can still buy a car you'll own for a long
time and low cost of ownership. I think the current C300 and E300 (both
with steel suspension) are good examples of that. They will be great used
cars in a few years.

But remember that the cars are not 240Ds and never will be again. Quality
isn't only mechanical quality, there is also the stability of the software
to be considered. Times have changed. And Mercedes has changed with the
times, and led the market. The overall complexity of all modern cars is
the result of the need to constantly improve efficiency, emissions, and
safety. All new cars on the road are far more complex than they were 30
years ago, from every make. You have to adapt your mindset to deal with
them. Just as a new skill set was required to work on fuel injected cars
instead of carbureted cars. If you approach a modern car with the mindset
of a mechanic from 30 years ago, you will be very frustrated. Thats what I
see in all your comments... longing for the past, and not understanding how
things have changed.

[MBZ] The copart SD, how to bid

2018-01-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So how do you tell if the private buyers can bid or if its a dealer only
deal?  I do not see anything on this SD listing it one way or the other
but I tried to put a bid and it said I couldn't. WTF?

All they need to do is last the lease and CPO. Screw the third driver, let
alone the fourth. If it makes it to six years without blowing up, that is all
for the good. The initial driver has moved to another lease, and the CPO
purchaser has enough loyalty to needing to be seen to be flash, that they will
either get another benz, or move to BMW, Jag, or other aspirational CPO

The new benz is made for lease, not purchase. Maybe there is enough quality
left for it to CPO, so the two or three year old S class has a few years left
before it gets too expensive to fix. As a lease, the multiple flaws will be
covered by warrantee work.A decade in, the cars turn to crap.

I am beginning to see w211 and other contemporary models at PnP.

Re: [MBZ] Major disappointment

2018-01-21 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
But, Larry, the newer examples of DBAG on the road are nothing like the 30 year
old cars. They are much more like a Frod or Chebby, or even a korean car.

I trolled the PnP yards for years and played with all manner of carcass while
there. I could see how the korean car quality increased, while the Mercedes
became more disposable. The plastics were lower quality and more pervasive,
while the build quality was creeping toward Dodge and Jeep standards. I also
found parts from china being used, where I am pretty sure the old stuff was
european.

The Benz reputation is being carried not by the recent models, but by the cars
Dan, and the rest of us are keeping on the road. It used to be that finding a
10 year old benz in the yard was super rare, and the 20 year old cars were just
starting to show. Now the standard is for a 10 year old car making its way to
the knackers instead of being kept on a car lot, hoping to find a buyer.

I bought my '97 4WD crew cab F250HD 7.3 P/S in '06 and paid about 10-11K for
it. It had 104K mi. on it at the time. It will pull or carry pretty much
anything I need, gets 15-17 mpg unless towing something heavy like my 6 ton 5th

The $50,000 to $60,000 peekups with all the "luxury" trim/interior such
as the frod "platinum" "limited" "SVT Raptor" and "King Ranch" are
what I classify as wussywagons. They are not meant for work, but to
show off the owners wealth or to stroke the owners ego, or to satisfy the wife
while doing one of the former.. The "platinum" is definitely trimmed to sell
to the female market. To be fair, pretty much all cars, MB included are
targeted at the female market. There may be some argument about the king
ranch, but with a price tag over $50,000, leather steering wheel cover, heated
seats, etc, it definitely has options that fall into the wussy category. Each
of these would be competing with a MB/nissan pickup.

I am not picking on frod, because GM, dodge, toada and nissan all offer
products with similar fru-fru. I am more familiar with their trim levels.

When you compare the $50k-60k wagens to the $27k ford F150 XL, can you honestly
tell me a "limited or "platinum" is worth twice as much
money? Will they get twice as much MPG? Will they last twice as
long? Will they carry twice as much? Do they have some combination of the 3
that justifies being worth twice as much?

The gummit meddling in the vehicle market has driven people away from cars and
into peekups. The carmakers are not stupid. they are just capitalizing on the
weaknesses of people and what their gummit has taxed/regulated them into.

I agree. that is how I have always done it. In the old 'merkun iron
with 4 gal cooling systems, we dumped in 2 gal prestone, then filled it
with water. That way you KNOW it is good to 20 below. If you dumped in
50/50, you'd end up with 15 to 18 below, and could lose an engine or get
stranded when the radiator froze. Of course, blocking 80% of the
radiator with cardboard helped too. (modern version of radiator shutters)

Mitch Haley via Mercedes
January 21, 2018 at 4:22 PM

Without a drain cock in the bottom of the block, I always put half the
system capacity of coolant in it, then top off with water, because
there was already some unknown quantity of water in there after flushing.

The drive for an hour to mix the stuff. For me, a round trip to town
to run errands takes care of that.

When I bought my first SDL, the OM603 was running without a thermostat
for the first few months. I thought the thermo was stuck partly open
because it never would get up to operating temp. When I finally
figgered out WHERE the thermostat was, and had the new one in hand, I
had to stick my finger in both sides before I believed someone had taken
out the thermostat and put it back together without a thermostat. I
have run OM616 without thermostat for a few days before without any
problems other than the engine not getting up to normal operation temp.

I can only tell you my experience with my '81 300TD. I saw the same
thing in my '83 240D. If you run the engine up to operating temp, then
shut it off and restart it'll over heat. I think with that procedure
you could get away with it because you don't stop and start again but
you can't drive around (or at least can't drive around much) without a
thermostat.
This is almost as bad as the argument about driving around with a
loose pressure cap, that one I did a lot of...

The Indy shop I use. Uses Distilled water when doing the citric acid
flush and mixing

with the coolant for final fill.
Remember to mix the coolant and water BEFORE adding it to the system.

The stove will light colder than a propane torch will. In single digits propane

Thats fake mapp gas. That rig is better than either of the other two torches

Maybe this is a good reason to do the dishwasher detergent treatment after,

Holy toot! Almost a pound per gallon... Actually I've never weighed it.
I wonder if you could reuse from one vehicle to another?

I loved my 124-I had it for 11 years and it had 270k miles with original
engine & tranny. A friend is still driving it.
Jury is out on my 211- I have had it 14 months. 159K. Had issue with 4
matic transfer case but dealer fixed it for fluid change and doing figure

[MBZ] Even more ATF de-watering

2018-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Made a video of the de-watering process. I've gotten it down pretty smooth now.

https://youtu.be/gVFAsBNGWnE

The stuff in the video was the first drawn off the machine when we realized we
had a problem, its horrible, the video is probably 2 hours of actual boiling.
Today we drained the machine, the stuff coming out now isn't real bad at all.
We went all out and drained 4 of the plow cylinders, the cylinder that puts the
wheels on the drag down and its looong hose, the drag is 18 feet long, the
machine is probably 14 so thats a long run.
We refilled and I boiled the water out of the stuff we took out, only took
about half an hour. While we were at it I dunked the filter, which is about the
same diameter as a 61x oil filter but about 16" long, into a pot of boiling
oil. Standing in the pot the filter became a steaming volcano, apparently its
been trapping water. Ben doesn't remember ever changing that filter and he's
been running the machine since 2001, obviously we're ordering a new filter...

We did 2 swaps today, I *think* we found the issue too, I don't think the cap
seal is sealing well. There are 3 tanks and this one the seal doesn't get an
obvious mark when its closed like the other 2 do, we'll see if we can get a new
seal...

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
To be honest if you buy that link I posted I also get a kickback through the
Amazon affiliate program.
For general cleaning you don't need very much, I usually get a gallon of hot
water from the tap and add 3 or 4 tablespoons. One time I cooked the crystals
in, I can't remember how much I finally got in but it couldn't have been a
whole cup.
I think MB wants 10% mixture, I have no idea how to calculate that but I
suspect a couple tablespoons in a gallon would de-scale the system just fine.
That amount works great to clean brass lantern parts. If you leave steel in it
for a week or three it disappears. I found that out the hard way.

Re: [MBZ] 240d cooling system flush

2018-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I can only tell you my experience with my '81 300TD. I saw the same thing in my
'83 240D. If you run the engine up to operating temp, then shut it off and
restart it'll over heat. I think with that procedure you could get away with it
because you don't stop and start again but you can't drive around (or at least
can't drive around much) without a thermostat.
This is almost as bad as the argument about driving around with a loose
pressure cap, that one I did a lot of...

realize Marshall was adamant about blocking open the thermostat. In this
instance, he was contradicting what the manual indicates, in other words,
wrong.

On OM602 engines, you DO block open the thermostat, I believe.

A 61x engine with the thermostat removed WILL overheat. The thermostat closes
the passage back into the engine forcing coolant into the radiator.
Interestingly with a cold engine it won't happen right away but if you get the
engine warm, shut it off and restart it'll overheat rapidly.

2018-01-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm not sure I'd go bragging about MB quality anymore, especially not the stuff
from the early 2000s, the admitted "low quality years".

Pretty much any hoopty made today will go 10 years, 200,000 miles. Around here
the body will pretty well be done in the 12-15 year range but the
engine/transmission will probably be fine if any amount of maintenance has been
kept up. 200,000 miles is not the challenge it once was.

I don't own anything will less than 100,000 miles right now.

tested them.  What I could not get him to understand was the difference
in quality didn't come when testing a new car.  Almost anyone can put a
car together that will feel great for the 1st month or 2. It became
obvious after 10 or more years with 100K or 200K miles on the clock but
with maintenance needed to keep it running properly that quality had to
be built in at the beginning.  The car magazines all make a similar
mistake although they do like to talk about the MBs craftsmanship.  But
in a week or so driving one they don't really know.  If they bought
pre-owned like many on the list they might come to understand the
importance of owning a car put together like a Swiss watch.

But the less the public knows, the more nice used MBs for us ;-)

Just from working on some of the newer cars I would guess they will not
last as long. Some of the 10 year old cars now I see priced at about half
or a 3rd or what a similarly model would have been when the 123 124 126
and 140s were at the same 10 year mark in their life cycle. If that makes
sense. They seem cheaper to buy.

The 210 seems ok but is not built as tough as the 124 or older. While I
like driving the 210, every time I get back into a 124 I really think I
like them better even though the 210 has some nice modern features.

I think the W210 is a nice transitional model from the earlier, more solid
W124/W126/W140 chassis’ cars. It’s not as solid like a W124 is, for sure, but
the more modern amenities it has and the reliability certainly are better than
the W124. That’s not to say the W124 models weren’t reliable - they are, I
think.

Modern car design goals:

Primary concern: the vast majority have to outlive the warranty.
Secondary concern: it's good for repeat business if the car outlasts the lease.

Reliability for the 4th owner after 250,000 miles isn't really something they

That would be my concerns as well. Do modern MBs have the longevity of their

Re: [MBZ] Major disappointment

2018-01-21 Thread tyee165 via Mercedes
The quality was built in 40 years ago. Not so sure about the new MB. Will be
many years before we will be certain, and I may be gone by then.
Many people who buy new do not keep a car long enough to care. They  move on. I
suspect that is why car companies do not much worry about the long term.

Many people don't understand the difference between MBs and other cars.
I had a friend who was looking for a new car - he test drove a new MB
and was not impressed.  He said a Chev or Ford felt the same way when he
tested them.  What I could not get him to understand was the difference o not
worry
in quality didn't come when testing a new car.
