The roof on the SEA remodel (1999) got architectural, as it was deemed far more 
robust and had a 25 year full warrantee which became pro-rated for the next 
10-15 years.  The normal three tab was pro-rated to 15 and expected to require 
replacement by 20.  Was my forever house, so I went big.  Never needed 
attention while I owned it, and sold with at least a square of product on hand 
should there have been need.

The GWN HOA has banned any roofing that is not three tab or cedar shake.  What 
it there is long past useful life, but trying to get a roofer now is on par 
with finding a real new car.  Have to schedule estimators for September, been 
told there are five colors available, and the cedar is scarce and will be 
available maybe next spring.  Sheet metal roofing is scarce as well.  House was 
not built well enough to tackle slate or tile.  The standard AK roofing option 
would be blue tarp, or I can toss some sod up there over the three tab

They are just about the same price with free shipping. I would need to pay my

To clarify: the aforementioned Michelin tires are of course radials, not 
bias-ply. They just aren't tubeless.

I purchased a set of four Vredenstein V rated all season tires for my 2014
GLK 250. They are quiet and have good handling characteristics. Haven't
driven in the rain yet, though, so that remains an unknown.

I put metal shingles on my roof a while back, 16K.  30 year shingles were 9k, 
I'm happy to have a very nice roof with a 50 year warrenty on it.

I had Metro shingles put one, special ordered white ones to cut down on the 
heat in the summer.  lowered the electric bill some, and it's dead quiet 
because the shingles are not in contact with the decking except at top and 
bottom.  They screw down on the top and hook at the bottom.

Put new chimney caps on at the same time, and re-laid the loose brick on the 
main chimney.  Other than cleaning one valley of leaves once in a while, I will 
never have to get on the roof again.

Put new gutters on at the same time, had some repairs needed and the guards the 
contractor liked wouldn't fit with the strap hangers on the old gutters, so 
when he said it was $300 more to put on new gutters and downspouts I jumped.

May or may not suit your needs, and standing seam is also 50 year, doesn't look 
as nice.  I don't really care, I just want a maintenance free long life roof.  
Someone else can deal with it 20 years after I'm dead.

No because a new asphalt roof over an old asphalt roof shortens the life of the 
new roof and thereby voids the manufacturers warranty as I understand it.

No. You want a tear-off and to be able to inspect the decking in case it’s 
damaged and needs replacement. Plus, roofing over an existing roof adds weight 
to the structure, and newer trusses probably aren’t engineered to handle the 
additional load.

I can only say that Michelin XWX, XAS, and other tires of that vintage, 
including the OE tires on 1970s Mercedes-Benz vehicles, required tubes. It has 
more to do with the rim design than the tire. I do not remember whether our 
1973 VW Beetle used tubes or not, but it seems that the giveaway is bias-ply = 
tubes, radials, not so much.

Roofer from Flagstaff just called to let me know they’re going out tomorrow to 
measure and inspect, so I asked them to quote me on a metal roof as well. 
Office gal made the call, so she really didn’t have any insight as to the 
differences in cost other than metal would be more expensive. I’ll share when I 
get the quotes.

Agreed. $36k for that roof is a ripoff. You’ve seen my house and might recall 
the gables and stuff, and it was barely $20k a couple of years ago with 
architectural grade shingles.

Exactly right. Which is the right type of roof. He says one panel locks over 
the other covering the screws on that one side so they don’t leak. I would 
imagine you then only have exposed screws on the end which would then be 
covered by a trim price. Metal roofs are much more expensive than a regular 
roof but these overlapping type are way more expensive than a regular metal 
roof.

That’s the catch with RA. If you can get all your stuff from the same place, 
fine, but once you start getting it from a bunch of different locations the 
shipping makes them uncompetitive.

I have an RSS feed from RA I monitor for my cars. On occasion, there can be 
deals, but they’re rare.

[MBZ] Vredestein tires, any good?

Very few choices in tires for my Ghia. Vredestein Sprint Classic is available 
from TireRack in the size I need.  Never had that brand but the reviews seem 
positive.

It's a summer tire (which is fine, I don't plan to drive this car in the 
winter) and there is an extensive caution about never driving or flexing the 
rubber below 20 degrees F, even just supporting the weight of the car. So 
wondering if I'd need to block up the car in the winter in my unheated garage?

haha yeah that is the kind of roof you want, a standing-seam or snap 
fit.  The under edge is screwed down with brackets then the free edge of 
the next panel snaps down over it.  A standing seam is similar but a 
machine crimps the seam tight. That stuff with the screws and rubber 
washers is OK for a barn or a shed or something, but the proper stuff 
with no exposed screws is the way to go.


You need to find a metal roof guy who knows what is available locally or 
just do a search on suppliers in your area and ring them up.  I ended up 
getting my roof material from some outfit in Georgia because of some 
stupid reasons that I did not understand at the time, and it caused a 
problem with a delay in production.  There are 2 or 3 local places that 
fab up the panels.  I think they all pretty much buy the rolls of 
material from various suppliers then have their own machines and dies to 
roll out the various profiles.

Well the 2nd guy just left and we have not talked numbers yet but he says the 
rental for sure has hail damage, and this house may have some hail but it’s 
mostly wind damage. The question will be how much they cover on the rental 
house since it looks to me to be ACV coverage. This house should be replacement 
so it depends on if they replace the whole thing or just patches. This guy used 
to be an adjuster so he knows how do deal with them, plus he was referred to us 
by several people. The first one was a company that has been around a long time 
but advertises all over the TV and radio.

or 25% discount on stuff and around here they will do free delivery over 
a certain amount.  Some parts are kinda expensive though, so you have to

few old barns). Those I thought were mostly galvanized steel.

A metal roof was put on our 'new' barn wings post-WWII.  It was very heavy gauge
corrugated aluminum, probably made in the rolling mills that used to do bomber 
skins.
Where it was not damaged mechanically by other storm debris, and where the nails
didn't pull out in the wind, etc., the roof is still good.  But that other 
damage all adds up,
and very little of that original roof is actually all that good anymore.

This is in the PNW, not that far from Kaiser's aluminum mills powered by the 
Columbia
river.  Might only have been a regional thing, and probably temporally limited.

Also, _very_ noisy in hail and such.

The first roofer just arrived and let me know the rental does not appear to 
have any storm related damage that would involve insurance, just normal wear 
and tear. He is up on this roof now but it does have some missing shingles etc. 
Will see what they say about this one.

It’s my understanding from talking to our roofer that it’s regular three tab 
shingles, architectural are 2x-3x more, and metal is 5x more.

Of course, it could be the market or code that makes it (more) expensive than 
in;other parts of the country, but considering material and engineering costs I 
could sort of see it.

 Not if its done right and you have decent insulation. Back in the old days 
they used to strap the roof before putting the roofing on so there would be a 
void between the roof and the insulation so it could ring. These days they put 
the metal right over the existing roof so it doesn't ring at all.
I've been in our camp during some pretty torrential rains, the metal roof isn't 
any louder than any other roof.

pitched more complex roof that I would imagine will be a lot more expensive.

I’ve got to do a roof on the Flagstaff house in the near future. I have a local 
roofing contractor coming by to give me an estimate soon. I may talk to them 
about a metal roof - they’re fairly common in the area. The house isn’t that 
big and the roof isn’t pitched significantly, so the roof area isn’t bad. Might 
be worth considering…

I might have cut 1/2" off the wire first, but if it seems good, and 
doesn't misfire at idle, you're probably OK.


You can always do a power balance test with a tachometer and a set of 
plastic "chicken pliers", or a tachometer and pain tolerance.

[MBZ] replace plug wires?

OT, but working on my Ghia and when I pulled the spark plug boots off of the 
plugs, one of the wires just fell out of the boot. The wires are probably 15 
years old, but they are silicone wires and still look OK. The pin in the boot 
had a spiral shape so it looked like it screwed into the end of the wire (as 
opposed to being crimped, soldered, etc). I tried to screw it back in and it 
seems to snug up pretty firmly. Should it still be OK or should I just get a 
new wire set (about $30)?

3-tab is your standard tract house roof.

Architectural are cut at different angles and overlaps to look a little more 
visually interesting. And they cost more.

That is my understanding. I don't know if there's any real difference in 
longevity. I think that you can get 20 or 30 year shingles in either type.

Mine is at 17, so I guess we shall see. I do know the policy states it’s paid 
on ACV rather than replacement value. The primary house is only about 8-9 year 
old roof and does not state the ACV deal in the policy.

A fried of mine got a new roof, fully covered by insurance, due to hail damage. 
His roof was by no means new at the time, but I don't know how exactly old it 
was. I was pretty surprised because I thought they all paid the depreciated 
value on a roof claim, just like they do when they total a car.

Not necessarily. If your roof is damaged by the elements, such as from hail or 
hurricane, they’ll pay to replace/repair it. I had a 20 year old roof that was 
clearly damaged by a hurricane and my insurer replaced the whole thing, almost 
$20k worth.

A lot of insurers in Florida won’t underwrite a policy on a house based on the 
age of the roof. If it’s more than 10-15 years old they won’t do it.

I read that article about USAA. Holy cow. I can’t believe they dug their heels 
in on that claim. They’ll end up paying out many times the cost of the claim to 
be “most right”. Stupid.
