Re: [MBZ] OM617 motor mounts

2021-08-14 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It’s a personal preference, but I prefer to do one side at a time rather than
both. I think it’s easier to get things lined up when you do one at a time, as
the side that’s still anchored serves as a reference point.

I loosen everything with the engine in place, then remove the fasteners on one
side, raise the engine enough to remove the mount, put the new mount in place,
then carefully lower the engine to get everything lined up. I’ll use a drift or
piece of rod stock to line the holes in the chassis up with the holes in the
mount.

Lather, rinse, repeat for the other side.

For what it’s worth, these older mounts are a real joy to do compared with
something like a W163 (ML) where you have to get at them from the side via the
wheel well.

My big tip: Be sure you have the right torque values for all the
fasteners. My '85 wagon was non-turbo, but I mistakenly used the turbo
engine procedure and the torque spec is far higher. I twisted off a
fastener, had to order a new one from MB. Took a few days to get it. I
think I was able to use a hardware store bolt for the interim and keep the
car on the road.

Good point.
Diesel doesn't belong in the crankcase, and motor oil doesn't belong in

That stretch sounds right. If the pointer was close to TDC when you had
the drill bit shoved into the hole, that's not your problem and you need to
pull and adjust the IP.

DON'T FORGET to get a new oil seal o-ring for the IP!!!

I just pulled the valve cover. Apparently there is a special tool you use to
stick in a hole at tdc. I did not have that so I just used a drill bit of a
size that fits in the hole. It’s not exact but should be close enough and shows
maybe 1-2 degrees of stretch at 207k miles. Looks good to me. I guess next I
need to just pull the pump and put it back like it should be. Will need to
order new gaskets first and really need to try to get that broken off bolt out
of the adjuster and get that fixed properly. What turned into a planned hour
long job will take the car down until next weekend. That would seem to indicate
the pointer is in the right spot, unless it’s off as is the chain stretch

All that tells me that the pump was pulled and put back wrong. You need a
new oil seal for the IP most likely.

Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] 606 ip timing

2021-08-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On the peach parts forum, one guy said that he would find TDC (and be able
to reset the pointer) by filling that cylinder with motor oil through the
injector hole. Take that injector apart, remove the nozzle and holder and
all the guts and use the body of the injector to plug the hole, then shove
a clear tube over the end of the injector so it stuck up above the valve
cover a good bit. Fill up the injector and the tube so you can see the oil
move up and down as the piston moves, and then you can move the crank back
and forth to find the high point for the oil. Stop there, set your pointer.

Next, drain / suck out all the oil, probably end up with a real mess down
the exhaust manifold so you may have to figure a way to drain that oil so
it doesn't kill the catalytic converter. Replace the injector guts and put
that back in place.

So if the pointer got moved, but the pump didn't ever get moved, then most
likely the chain is now stretched and the pump is late. So if you just
want to take a guess and move the pump to see if you can improve the smoke
situation, then I'd say advance it a few degrees and see how she runs.

If you go that far and pull the IP, the oil seal (big o-ring) on the

I ended up managing to break off the small bolt that holds the lower adjuster
to the block. This happened because the pump was adjusted as far as if would go
to the left (drivers side) at this point I get both lights lit up and it’s at
5-6 atdc. I went ahead and pulled the manifold to get a better look.

With the manifold off I wonder if I should go ahead and check the chain
stretch. Once again I say if the chain was stretched it would be after 14
before we got both lights on. I can only assume since the thing runs just fine
except for the light smoke, the pointer has moved at some point and it probably
needs new nozzles.

[MBZ] OM617 motor mounts

2021-08-14 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
How long should the R job take for W116 OM617 motor mounts?

It's been so long since I've done it (and it was on a W123), I don't remember.
Seems like it should be: jack up and support the engine, unbolt old mounts,
bolt in new mounts, done.

But I vaguely remember possibly having to remove oil cooler lines on the left
side to get access to the mount. Or maybe I just replaced those at the same
time because they were leaking.

Trying to plan out tasks for the rest of the weekend.

Never looked at a 116. IIRC 115 has had both types, the roller on leaf spring
and the sliding ball detent types. Never seen anything but the latter in
123/126.
Never seen anything but roller on cam in 107. Never seen a broken 107 strap,
they seem to be significantly more robust than the others. It may be that the
bodies are not pot metal, unlike the 115. It's the pot metal that always fails.

Note that even the heater was an option, back then. My '60 Falcon doesn't have
PS, nor
does it need it. My joke was the it didn't have power anything, not even the
motor!
(144cid I6, not very powerful. 1-barrel Holley carb.)

Lots of ground clearance, drove it into some pretty sketchy places. Never got
stuck.
(Not mud.) I retract that, got stuck once on the beach in the drier sand.

Very simple to work on. IIRC it took me 20 minutes to remove the head once to
dig a screw out of the piston. Maybe another 20 minutes to be back running
again.

Yea that’s why I liked the once or sometimes twice a month deal. I am sure I
will still be gone at times but won’t get to see different parts of the
country.

I am sure there will be a mass exodus of people who will not like the new
situation as some of them did not want to be put on the install team.

Yeah, I enjoyed the twice monthly traveling I did when I was doing the
recruiting of operators for the old nuke plant, but it grew tedious after ten
years. Eventually, I had to pass it off to the younger, fresher faces of
nuclear power.
You can help in the bakery if you run out of things to do at work or in your

Wow, that sucks.

After weeks of complete silence, they had a call last monday to basically say
they knew nothing and anything we have heard is just rumors. By Thursday they
sent out an email saying our new managers would be reaching out to let us know
what our new jobs would be. Apparently some of our people were staying in their
current roles and others were moving to an install team. Basically the way it
is now is we all have 1 week a month where we travel to areas outside our
normal territory to implement new accounts. Now they will have a team who does
this full time. I remained in my existing job but will most likely have a lot
more area to cover. I will no longer be flying to different areas for installs.
This trip to NYC in a couple of weeks will be my last. No idea if or how often
I will be traveling now but it sounds like it would just be with my territory.

Money pit. If you've got injection system issues on these cars you’re going to
drop a major dime getting them right. Rust in the requisite places, expensive
to fix and hides what is no doubt more extensive stuff behind it.

Too bad, as it’s an SE, making it more desirable but also more expensive to
restore.

I have a real problem with all these garage queens.  Cars were built to
be driven not on exhibit in a museum or to just sit in a garage.  It's
fun to see them, but would be more fun to see them running and driven
like real cars.  I think about the guy here who has all these Rollers
100+/-yo and he drives them all and maintains them, and they look really
nice, but he uses them as they were meant to and enjoys them for what
they are

Re: [MBZ] OT 1964 Ford Futura 13kmi

2021-08-14 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
In the early 80’s I had a ‘62. Three-on-the-tree, dead simple 170in3, no PS,
manual choke, tube AM radio…it was awesome.
It shared almost all its accessories bits (brackets, pulleys, braces, AC/heater
parts) with Mustang. I remember being annoyed cause Mustang guys had more money
to pay higher prices for those things than I did so, as a result, I could
upgrade my Falcon with the correct aftermarket AC to make living here more
comfortable.
I remember trying to talk the nurse at the children’s hospital into allowing me
to take my infant son home in my Falcon on July 30, 1989. I think it was 116
degrees and we had a 25 mile trip through Phoenix traffic. My effort to toughen
him up from the get go turned into me calling my dad and he came down in his
1990 Toronado blowing ice cold air.

Friend of mine had his mom's early 60s Comet, fully loaded, parked in
the back 40. Floor and I believe frame rotted out within 20 years of
parking it but it still looked decent topside when sent to the crusher.

The guy I worked for right out of school with all the Jags had an early 60s

 Neat!
I was sorely tempted by a Studebaker Champ a couple weeks ago. I figured an
old, simple truck would make a good camp vehicle. I want something with enough
clearance to easily run out to camp so I can use my Jetta to commute to Caribou
and use 1/3 the fuel the truck does.
