What Floyd said. Both of my 1990 W126 chassis' cars are wired directly to the

Yes, the W126 window motors are wired directly to the switch. You chose wisely
by removing the motor in situ. That's what I had to do when I replaced the
"sliding jaw" on the LR window regulator on the 300SEL.

If it's got COPs, you're probably OK. They're pretty bulletproof and easy to

First and last are not finnies (W110/111/112) but W108 chassis cars. Middle one

Thanks for these - keep them coming!

Re: [MBZ] Find Me a Finnie!

2017-04-26 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
A very crowded driveway right now. If these kids would ever move out I would
have more space...

I have a two car garage (300D & SL500) a three car wide driveway (1994 S420,
350SDL, 300SEL) and the street (1998 S420).

The two W126 cars are usually parked end to end in front of the 300D's garage
so the SL500 can come and go freely. Needless to say it's quite a ballet when I
need to work on a particular car in the garage.

With the 300SEL coming online soon, either it or the 98 S420 will be departing.
I will have room for the Finnie.

[MBZ] Find Me a Finnie!

2017-04-26 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The 300SEL is just about complete, so it's time to move on to my next bucket
list car - a Finnie.

I am now actively seeking a W110/111/112 chassis car, gas or diesel, auto or
manual. As with any car I would consider, I'm looking for something with a
solid body, no rust, maybe in need of serious Martha-ing. In other words,
cosmetics over mechanicals. No project cars, it must be a driver. No museum
pieces, as my budget won't support it. I don't have an exact budget number
just yet, but it would definitely be under $10k.

Given the choice I would prefer to avoid the W112 due to its complexity and
parts cost/availability. AC would be icing on the cake but lack of it is by no
means a deal breaker.

Location is not important, as I will gladly travel for the right car.

So please keep your eyes out for a Finnie!

Thanks,

WaWa is a gas station/convenience store that originated in PA or NJ, I'm not
sure. They just recently opened a bunch of stores in the Tampa area, one of
which is close to me. I buy diesel there, not because they're any better than

2017-04-25 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
We have "ethanol free" gas at some stations here, mostly the new WaWa places.
As I fill up my tanks for yard equipment and generator I'll be buying this for
all future consumption.

Looks like it's about the same price as premium fuel with ethanol.

I always run my small engine powered equipment out of fuel when I'm done using
it. A habit I got into years ago.

Re: [MBZ] 1971 W109 300SEL 3.5

2017-04-25 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
At the time it predated such venues as eBay, so finding a market for it on a
large scale was tough - maybe Hemings, if that.

I ended up selling it for $7k when we relocated to Florida, as I wouldn't have
room for it t the new house. It got totaled a few months later when hit on the
right rear by a UPS truck, or so the owner told me. It was hit so hard it
sheared the right rear wheel off, along with the fender. Their insurer refused
to repair it, and they didn't know what they were doing when it came to
challenging the claim, I guess.

Today it might be worth in the mid teens, maybe?

You can see some pictures of it in this Dropbox folder:

Re: [MBZ] WAS RESTORED ** 1979 - NOW oil issues

I believe that was the case.

Understand that it doesn't cause or create the leaks - its ability to flow
makes it easier to get past what might have been small or marginal leaks with
Dino oil. If it causes the seals or gaskets to swell slightLy, the leaks
should decrease or stop on their own.

They're effectively a carpet colored wedge that just sits on the floor of the

Re: [MBZ] RESTORED ** 1979 MERCEDES BENZ 300SD ** BUY 4 SHOW         OR AS DAILY CAR!! $8999

2017-04-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Roger,

"Zundfogle" is German for "firing order". This was cast in the valve covers
and heads of older MB engines for reference purposes. Sellers who don't know
these cars like we do will often put a reference in their for sale ads about
the "zundfogle" engines, thinking this term means there's something of great
value relative to this.

It's sort of like the folks who refer to the laminated glass windows on the
W140 models as being "bulletproof".

Always gives us a good chuckle

I'll have the lines off, so I figure I can flush them out while they're off the

Re: [MBZ] M103 Air Flow Meter Boot

2017-04-21 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Thanks, Peter, but as inexpensive as the boot and idle air valve hoses are, I'm
going for broke and replacing all of them. Ordered the parts from MB yesterday,
they should be in on Monday. They're not terribly expensive - I think the boot
lists for around $45, and the hoses about $10/each.

I also ordered all of the injector O rings and holders, too. I'm seriously
considering replacing the injectors while I'm in there. I can get a set of new
Bosch injectors for around $125. My only concern is comments I've seen in the
various forums about Bosch's lack of QC on their injectors.

Re: [MBZ] Freebies!

2017-04-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Will do.

The headlights are going to replace the set I got from Kaleb that didn't have
vacuum levelers that are current installed on the 350SDL. I'll move those to
the 300SEL. I'll swap the brand new Bosch lenses from the Kaleb set to my new
ones, too.

Also, I didn't include pictures of the headlight wipers, motors and brackets
that came with the headlights, either.

[MBZ] Today's 300SEL Fun

2017-04-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Picked up the new transmission vacuum modulator from the dealer at lunch.

Got home, got the car in the air and got the old modulator out without a lot of
work. It was the original modulator from the looks of it, as it had the old
style rubber cap which was eliminated in 1991. The cap had some cracks in it,
so that was probably the leak.

Got the new modulator in without a lot of effort. Connected up a pressure gauge
to check working pressure on the modulator (58 psi). Had to adjust a couple of
times to get it dialed in, after which I installed the "T" and the locking cap.

Took it for a test drive and it shifted well. Now I just need to drive it some
more to determine if that was the (last) vacuum leak...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cell phone flakiness

2017-04-04 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
In all the years I've been with Verizon, I have never exceeded my data cap.
Mostly texts and checking/sending mail, that's about it.

I love it when I go into their store, and the first thing they always want to
do is "check my account activity so they're sure I've got the best plan." I
gave up telling them not to bother, I just let them figure it out each time.

From what you can see it looks like the guy did a decent job with the build. If
you were able to keep all the relevant systems working, like AC and the top
hydraulics, it's not a bad car IMHO.

Re: [MBZ] Release Fuel Door Actuator?

2017-04-03 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Above. I have the later model that's barrel shaped with the red mushroom for
the manual release.

It looks like there's a tab on the forward part that has to be pressed to
release the actuator from the part anchored to the car.

I'll poke around on it this afternoon when I get home from work.

Re: [MBZ] 13 and 15

2017-03-31 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Nothing but a hole. You'll need the Metra harness. I can look up the number for
it if you need one, it's a standard DIN radio harness.

When I bought one for my 350SDL I bought the Metra harness and wired it up
myself. Pretty easy and straightforward.

I may have another on the way from an R129 buddy who bought one and didn't like
it. Not sure which car I'll put it in yet...

It uses a standard DIN connector, like mid 90s and later MBs use. The

Re: [MBZ] Phone sales

2017-03-30 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Understood. Did you lease or purchase outright?

Solar City has just landed here, since the state regulations have been relaxed
slightly, giving them the ability to do business. The laws here that hose
things up basically say that no one can be a power producer (seller) other than
the utilities. That is now changing, so folks like Solar City can finally do
business here.

Another change in state law covers value to the home, that is, up until this
year appraisers didn't have to consider a solar system as a permanent fixture
and include its value in the value of the home. Now they do.

This state has been so messed up when it comes to solar energy, and sadly it's
all due to a bunch of greedy utilities.

Not when the legislators are getting boatloads of lobbyist money. We've got
another one going in the legislature right now. The power companies are pushing
a bill through that will allow them to charge Florida rate payers for the
utilities' costs for energy exploration outside of Florida.

The locals are raising Cain with the legislators over it, yet they're still
voting to make it law anyway.

Don't blame the residents, blame the greedy utilities like Duke Energy and
Florida Power who want to keep paying dividends to stockholders rather than
focus on those who they serve. It's them and the asshats in the state
government like Rick Scott who are doing this.

They tried to get a constitutional amendment through last year that would have
made it near impossible to be an independent power producer, but the voters saw
through it as a grab for more power. They dumped $30M on lobbying and
advertisements to try and push it through.

Re: [MBZ] Phone sales

2017-03-29 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Well, unfortunately due to the lobbying efforts of the big utilities down here
net metering in nearly impossible to do. In rural areas where there are smaller
utilities, not typically investor owned I might add, they'll work with you much
like the system that Manfred recently installed.

Where I am the utility had a lottery for the number of accounts they would
accept net metering for each year. This is the first year they stopped doing it
- that means you can still do solar if you want, but you're not getting
anything from them out of the deal.

And pray tell, Andrew, how much did your system set you back in total? Or is it
leased?

When I flew to Little Rock to pick up the 350SDL I carried on with a bunch of
tools. I realized my mistake when I got to security, as I had intended to check
that bag. Dang it!

I spent about 20 minutes with some HS employee with a gauge that measured the
length of my tools to see if they could go or not. Mostly HF stuff on purpose,
it went in the bin if they didn't approve.

I probably got flagged because I had a one way ticket, too.

Just follow the clear plastic return line from the filter assembly that goes to
a banjo bolt on the engine side of the IP. You'll know you've found it when you
see the banjo bolt that looks like it has a bolt head with a lock nut

I'm sort of interested in the OM603's version of this and how it might affect

[MBZ] Today's 300SEL Fun

2017-03-27 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Drive to work was uneventful. Didn't get any rumbling at freeway speeds on the
drive in, so I'm assuming all is now well relative to the drive train. I'll be
curious to get a tank of fuel through this beast to see what kind of mileage it
gets without all the service related stuff that affected the first tank I ran
through it. The gas gauge seems to move around a lot even when the tank is
full. I'm wondering if someone disassembled it or the disc has fallen off the
bottom of the sender. That would allow the float to move around a lot more than
it should, eliminating the dampening it provides.

I need to snag an analog VOM so I can adjust the CIS duty cycle. I've tested
the input from the temperature sensor and other external things and they're all
within spec, so I'm hoping the system is pretty much dialed in.

Re: [MBZ] W126 Weird Hose

2017-03-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
It got compromised because the clamp I used to clamp it off perforated the
hose. I'm comfortable with the integrity of the hose itself.

I'm going to look for a metal or plastic sleeve for the repair. I'm not
terribly keen on the silicone tape thing, as a repair like this tends to fail
again when you least expect it.

Thanks, everyone. It's good to have some folks to bounce these things off of
for different viewpoints.

Re: [MBZ] OK guys it's time to grow up

The Lethal Weapon franchise is the adult equivalent of the "Land Before Time"
kids series. Massage the story line to make it marginally different and spit
out another to cash in.

I kid you not, there must have been 20 or more iterations of "Land Before
Time", and my kids had to see/own every one...

Re: [MBZ] OK guys it's time to grow up

2017-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
There is a local television feed on cable that's a national provider in most
markets called "MeTV". They show all kinds of older TV shows, like Hogan's
Heroes, Twilight Zone, etc., etc. One of the shows they run is MacGyver, which
precedes Hogan's Heroes (which I often watch before I fall to sleep.)

I never watched the show when it aired, but have heard about it, especially the
spoofs on Saturday Night Live. I occasionally see the last few minutes of it,
and since having done so, have found that it's got to be one of the goofiest
bad 80s shows that ever existed

Re: [MBZ] Becker BE-1432

2017-03-20 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
In a nutshell, every time an incorrect code is entered a watchdog timer in the
radio's logic resets and adds more time to the previous interval. In other
words, the more you attempt to enter incorrect codes the longer it will be
before you're allowed to re-enter a code. The timer increments in pretty large
amounts, as after making just a few attempts it can take many hours before it
resets, possibly over a day. The timer only runs while the radio is powered up,
so powering it down doesn't gain anything in the way of time.

Re: [MBZ] If there were ever a couple of Kleb cars....

2017-03-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Good point - for the diesels, which she rarely drives. They're "too slow" for
her. She also doesn't like the larger S class cars. She likes her SL500 the
best.

I apologize to that car every time I get in it, because I know she just
thrashes the poor thing. I'll give it credit that it has held up well and is
probably the least troublesome MB I've ever had.

Re: [MBZ] Who is Best?

2017-03-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Mercedes is about $100

Corteco (OEM) is about $30

Remainder are $20 and below (not under consideration as this range is clearly
substandard.) No more Lemförder, NLA. They were OEM prior to Corteco.

I'm going with the Corteco. A new bearing including all the goodies like dust
boots and such from Mercedes is only around $30. Go figure.

300SEL rumbles starting around 50 mph, definitely perceptible by 65. You can
even slightly feel it in your seat, too.

I'm thinking center support bearing, but I'm also wondering if the inner CV
joint that has a cracked boot could be doing it, too? There is still grease in
the joint/boot and it doesn't make noise or sound "grindy" if you move it
around.

On that same subject, I've got a split boot I'm going to put on it this weekend

I know it lost a little bit of grease when the boot cracked, as I can see where

In the W140 vergassers there is all sorts of sheet metal shielding in the
tunnel. Between that and the insulation that falls off, I'll bet you've got a
piece of insulation that's flopping around or hitting the drive shaft.

Re: [MBZ] Klima Konfusion about part numbers

2017-03-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
The relay on my W126 300SEL is not a KLIMA, it's a MAS. It will have a knob
(not a button) on the top with an "I" and an "O" positions, indication that it
is locked down ("I") or open "(O").

It does have the functions of a KLIMA, but it also interfaces with the fuel
system idle control as well. I don't totally understand the interaction, but I
know that's a part of its operation.
