I have three or four copies of everything. when one disk dies, I just
replace it, and it gets auto brought up to date. I fought with SANs, NASs,
and RAID at work for years, didn't want to mess with it at home.

I used to do something similar, but recent viruses have taken to destroying
files in all online storage devices (then charging a bitcoin ransom for the
recovery key, which may or may not work). I have thought about investing
in a tape drive (which is ironic given my employer :) but in practice I
just keep a USB disk offline, and bring it up occasionally to do the
replication. The problem with rotating storage is that it needs to be
spinning to keep working, so I can't leave it in a drawer and expect it to
work. There were some good deals on 64G USB sticks last week, but I didn't
buy any since I don't have a good plan for using them.

Anyway, given the state of viruses, I would definitely recommend keeping a
solid-state backup - flash, or DVD, or an offline disk - rather than
depending on a system that uses Windows shares.

To the original post, Synology is a good choice for low power, low noise,
high configurability, reasonable cost and reliability. If you roll your
own, I have to agree with Dan that FreeNAS is the way to go. If you are
willing to lose some abilities, many of the 802.11ac routers have USB ports
that will accept a USB drive (or even multiple drives) and expose Windows
and NFS shares.

Merry Christmas to all,

Enterprise grade fails too, but shipping mixes them up so customers don't
see it, even if there is a single bad line. As I understand it the drive's
life is mostly limited because of the tolerances of the components; if you
have a single run of every component in manufacturing, it is somewhat more
likely they will fail at about the same time in the same usage
environment. On the other hand your enterprise drives probably have a 10
or 20 year MTBF, by which time you've already replaced them.

Of course you are probably using RAID 5 or 6 too, so even if you have a
couple drives fail at almost the same time you can easily recover. If two
drives out of a RAID 0 fail, and that -was- your backup, you have a
problem. :)

Thanks Don for the synchronicity tip and Tim for the heads up about online
storage. Is the online storage a problem with linux also? I am assuming
so because most of the web servers are linux.

Oh, sorry, in the context I meant online as in always connected, not as
in over the internet necessarily. What Don was describing is what I would
call online storage. Offline storage here would be tapes/DVDs, or over the
internet (cloud) on an occasional basis.

Is the online storage also a problem wiht the larger providers like google
 and Microsoft?

Not really, the weakest point is your password. The big concern with cloud
is, the easier it is to make changes to file (like Dropbox's desktop
integration) the easier it is for a malicious program to do the same.

I love cloud storage, but for me it is too expensive/slow at the moment.
Amazon is pushing things in the right direction though. :)

you they haven't been purchased yet.

To the subject, Roku is wonderful. I own four (two are loaned out). It
has more supported content than Apple TV, a thoughtful interface, and is
pretty easy to set up. Remote on the higher models is Bluetooth, but there
is also an IR receiver for universals. I have both Netflix and Amazon

The LT is $30 this weekend, if I recall correctly, but I'm not shopping so
I don't know if it has analog out. The bigger models do, I paid $40 for my

on loan) ran every day for a couple of years.

If you need local news or sports, you can dig up a new HDHomeRun device to
do ATSC to the network. I don't have one, and haven't priced them
recently. There is probably some way to do the same with Plex and a tuner
card in your computer. Plex is good for local media streaming if you have
a big library on the computer.

I have a separate DVD and VHS player. When I bought the new TV, I
calculated how much time the kids were watching TV and figured up the power
utilization delta over a couple years, and added that to my TV budget. :)

If nothing else, the whole thing is an object lesson in being careful to

I'm curious how you arrive at this conclusion. I've been keeping tabs on
new car prices (fallback if the van fails and I don't have Wilton's SDL
reliable), all base MSRP for 2015s off manufacturer web sites:
TDI Jetta: can't find a price with the TDI, didn't look too hard
TDI Jetta Wagon: 26565
TDI Passat: 33585

Prius 2: 24200
...three middle models...
Prius 5: 30005

The back seat on the Jetta is really too small for all the children, so I
was mostly looking at the Passat until I saw the price for the TDI
upgrade. Also, diesel here is consistently between 60c and 90c more
expensive here than regular. Personally I'd rather have a Camry hybrid
(26790 (vs 22970 for non-hybrid)), but the Prius family is really not a bad
deal given the market.

Now, why we can't import baby diesels like they have in India I don't quite
understand, but given the family situation it's really a moot point for me
anyway. :)

It's a Mercedes, by golly. Expect them to sell it for $500-2000 in a
charity auction, I'm guessing $1200ish. For quite a while, I think since
2005 or so, you get to deduct what they sold it for.

I have gotten less than $499 twice, once on a 115 with nothing visibly
wrong with it (non-seized engine was disclosed of course), and later on a
then ten-year-old Volvo wagon with 140kmi. From the receipts I gather the
hauling service is allowed to convert cars to parts if they choose, and
then assign a sale value of their own choosing... which somehow turns out
to be less than $499 regardless of vehicle.

I'm sure this varies by area, but I'm reasonably comfortable saying the
haulers in this area make a great profit by collecting cars for non-profits
and then turning over as little money as possible to them. On the other
hand we do get a lot of nice cars in the junkyards, which are
coincidentally run by the same folks...

There is nothing wrong with hiding your SSID, but you'll have to remember
it when you configure new systems, and it does not do much in the way of
security as Dan has pointed out. I don't hide mine, even on the secure
APs, because it is so much easier to configure things with the SSID
broadcasting.

There are a few risks to an open/hacked access point:
 1) someone can get on your network and exploit any open systems/devices.
They might print stuff, hack Windows, browse your NAS or Windows shares,
etc. This is the same as if you have these devices directly connected to
the internet, or are port forwarding. IMO this is the biggest risk, so my
open access point is on a different network than my infrastructure for this
reason.

1a) someone might use your internet connection to download stuff, like
maps or email or even technical support web pages. Possibly illegal stuff
too, I suppose, though most people would be too polite to do that. Keep in
mind that anyone who is using your connection is within range of your
antenna, which is probably a little wire inside a plastic box. Even with
an extended-range adapter you are looking at a few hundred feet, unless you
are actively involved.

 2) someone can use DNS forwarding to intercept your connections to web
sites. Fortunately most sites are using SSL by default now, so
Facebook/Gmail/Yahoo/banks should be safe, as long as you don't
thoughtlessly click through the someone is intercepting your traffic!
page. (At the moment, and I think Chrome is exempt here, there is a
technical way to silently intercept an SSL page, but you'd have to be on
someone's really bad list for them to bother. I've never heard of anyone
doing it outside of the demonstration.)

 3) someone can intercept any non-encrypted traffic. Big players in the
non-encrypted-traffic space are apps, Adobe, web news services, FTP,
usenet, torrents, and so on. Basically anything your ISP can read, can be
read on an open or compromised access point.

Of course, someone could be doing #2/3 off your cable or phone line (unless
you have a VPN configured on your router), so having an open access point
just makes their job easier.

A limitation for Bluetooth readers, at least until recently, is that the BT
scanner can only connect to one client at a time. Now there is a free
Torque add-on that lets you daisy-chain connections, so you can have
multiple clients (e.g. a phone in the dash, and a tablet that you are using
for doing something else), but I think that only works with Torque. I am
assuming that the WiFi readers never had this limitation, and you could
connect multiple clients to a single reader.

A Bluetooth reader should not hog power, if the connection is lost (e.g.
distance) then the app shuts down until the connection is re-established by
the OS.

take it apart to fix it, and my record on fixing Beckers is 0/2. Depending
on your patience you could certainly do better, but it's not a blindingly

For a few dollars on eBay, you could buy an FM transmitter that takes a

Hard to say, usually the head doesn't engage (and certainly doesn't -need-
to engage!) when FF/RW - those only depend on the tape lowering into the
tray. If someone pushed the head back, it could be pushing back too far
and not touching the tape, or they could have popped the mechanism that
pushes it back and forth.

But it plays in FF/RW (I assume you mean when the play button is pressed at
the same time)? If so then the mechanical is not the problem, which is
great! Could be a wiring issue, or a loose solder joint, or something much
easier to troubleshoot without having to dismantle the whole thing. And

There are many cheaper options, including annual, depending on needs. If

English sites. Also, if there is a problem (one of ours overheats),
service is difficult to obtain.

That's not to discourage you necessarily, but that you go into it with your
eyes open. Something like a Galaxy Note might be an easier point of entry,
if slightly smaller. Or you could get a regular tablet and use a Bluetooth
earpiece with a VoIP solution.

The Coolpads are not listed as unlocked, but they appear to be usable on
both android and Iphone networks. Here is some of their tech data:

They will be unlocked on GSM networks (ATT, T-Mobile). The CDMA networks
(Sprint, Verizon) won't work.

 1. Would this phone work on a Verizon network that My Iphone is on, and
later on an android network?

Nothing works on Verizon, unless it was purchased directly from a Verizon
store. That's not completely true but pretty close...

Sprint is somewhat more forgiving, but international phones outside India
rarely support their network.

 2. Is this the equivalent of an unlocked phone?

It is unlocked, but that only extends to ATT and T-Mobile (and their
MVNOs) in the US.

 3. All listed on Ebay are shipped from China or Hongkong. Does anyone
know of a satisfactory retailer in China or Hongkong that might carry these
phones? If not, would it be better to buy from China or Hongkong?

What is the warranty situation? Small electronics are notorious for having
subtle issues escape QA, especially with smaller/younger companies. If you
have a bad screen on a Samsung you can at least ship it back to them.

 4. I read that a quadcore phone is needed for use overseas. Several on
Ebay are listed as octacore phones. Would these also work overseas (
Quad = 4, Octa = 8)?

Quadband. You should be able to use an unlocked international GSM phone
almost anywhere. This one doesn't seem to have LTE (?) which has its own
set of exceptions.

 German newspaper /Süddeutsche/ reports http://www.sueddeutsche.de/

zu-linux-und-zurueck-1.2090611 deputy mayor Josef Schmid as saying the
city is considering the move because users often complain about the
 functionality available in open-source applications.

The lack of an integrated contact, calendar and email application is cited
as staff's chief gripe. The /Süddeutsche/ story also mentions a need to set
up an external email server to allow the City's mobile devices to send and
 receive messages.

So vociferous are the complaints that the city council will create an
expert panel to assess the performance of its chosen software. Schmid is
quoted as saying that if the panel recommends a return to Microsoft, he
 won't oppose that change.

There are no German speakers in Vulture South or Vulture West, the /Reg/
offices working on this story, so we're reliant on machine translation and
its nuance-stripping machinations. But even after we stuffed the story
through three - Bing, Google and Babel Fish - the meaning came across as
 reported above.

If Munich decides to revert to commercial software, the open-source
movement will lose one of its most visible champions.

http://arstechnica.com/business/2014/08/linux-on-the-desktop-pioneer-munich-now-considering-a-switch-back-to-windows/

These views aren't held universally, with the City Council
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Linux-in-Muenchen-Stadtrat-verteidigt-LiMux-gegen-Buergermeister-2262506.html
defending
the LiMux project and suggesting that the coalition administration is
using the Linux migration as a scapegoat. The Council says the use of open
source software has yielded savings of more than EURO 10 million (more than $13
million).

Karl-Heinz Schneider, head of municipal IT services, seems to endorse this
view. He says it's no surprise that a new platform should temporarily
generate more support requests, and he wasn't aware of any particular
complaints.

Microsoft announced last year that it was moving its German headquarters to
Munich. This move is planned to take place in 2016. While Reiter was
involved in the deal that precipitated the move and describes himself as a
Microsoft fan, he says the criticism of LiMux is unrelated.

Looks like it propagated to Craig's well enough. dig is an easy Linux
and Unix command for dealing with DNS records directly: you can issue
dig domain MX +short
for the MX records, or
dig domain +short
for the IPv6 addresses, or
dig domain +short
for the IPv4 addresses. And +short is optional.

I can configure the MX servers in my DNS control panel at GoDaddy,
however, I'm a little confused as to how my mail will get to Verizon.
I say that since the former incoming mail from my web host was
forwarded to Verizon (dpen...@verizon.net) in this form, not as
  d...@penoff.com.

With your information at GoDaddy, I presume you have some sort of mail
handling service so mail coming to your domain is not rejected. If you
do (and I don't see how you would not), all you need to do is set it up
to forward from d...@penoff.com to dpen...@verison.net.

I think mail forwarding is a paid service at GoDaddy, at least if you are
just using them for registration. You would set the MX records to point to
GoDaddy, though they should walk you through that.

My situation is slightly different because my domain hosting and email
serving are by the same company. I do, however, have a forward from, for
example, diese...@pisquared.net to the account at which I really pick up
my email. That forward is a part of my domain hosting.

That is another possibility, your web host might include e-mail and/or
e-mail forwarding. Is that GoDaddy also?

Ah, that explains my results in reply to Craig.

The real rub is the proper sequence of what steps to take when
transferring an actively hosted domain. The process varies slightly from
one provider to another, which is where I got screwed up.

In a transfer, you have to make sure that both the original and target
services are running, and synchronized. That is oddly difficult. GoDaddy
is right that a third party is a good move, because you can put up a
Temporarily out of order sign while you are dealing with making sure
everything transferred correctly. This prevents someone from being halfway
through a transaction during the transfer.

Basically, with this transfer, you are dealing with at least:
 - registrar, which points to your DNS server;
 - DNS, which points to your web and mail hosts;
 - web host;
 - mail receiver;
 - mail forwarder, which points to your real e-mail address.

You have to make sure all of these are set up correctly on both the old and
the new hosts. The more of these that are operated by the same vendor, the
less visible it is during the transfer. Since I have different services
for each (except my forwarder and receiver are the same, and my web host is
expired) it makes it easy to change any one at a whim.

With your external DNS you could point to the 1and1 mail servers I listed
before, and they would continue to forward your mail until your term
expires. That might be a good interim step.

 Yes.

I don't think MS has fixed their incremental problem - you have to run
update multiple times to actually get everything installed - so you might
check WU again. Also the criticals tend to be things that aren't
security-specific, but could maybe be exploited, and of course QA will be
testing all the other fixes with the latest of everything. You can block
Bing and so forth from installing (ignore, I believe) and then bulk
install the rest, unless there is a particular objection. On a new install
I usually start the updates before I leave for the night, restart in the
morning, monitor occasionally, and then I might be done at lunchtime.

With a few notable exceptions*, I have been satisfied with the MS update
quality control, enough that I let the lab computers update automatically

There is a discussion by knowledgeable EVers here:

That was the highest non-advertising link on the Google for Nanoflowcell.
For me, that's the biggest red flag - no outside research discussion, no
progression of technology, just a slick ad man who somehow miraculously
leapfrogged a huge number of worldwide chemists to come up with a product

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I'll save my money...

Indeed, congrats!

I have speared oil filters with screwdrivers, that works pretty well.
Unless the filter falls apart, I suppose, but that hasn't happened to me
yet.

The longest oil change I've ever done was about 16 working hours on the
Escape, plus an hour or two of shop time. The Ford dealer overtightened
the drain plug (I think I ticked off the technician by insisting that I did
have a transmission). I wound up stripping it, then completely rounding
it, while trying every kind of easy-out device and drill bit. Eventually I
took it to a shop, and in the end they stuck it on a lift and used a
grinder to get it out. Come to think of it, that was also the most
expensive oil change ever, at the $125/hr shop rate here.

Things like that really make me appreciate MB's attention to design detail.

unhappy with how un-straightforward Freedom Pop's website is. Looks like
 they're hiding stuff.

I have several FreedomPop accounts. They run off Clearwire's network,
which is to say Sprint's WiMax, with a few (expensive) exceptions. They
are currently clearing inventory since WiMax is closing down. 3G is a
monthly access charge unless you are on the phone beta, 4G (LTE or WiMax)
is free for the first 500/900MB.

I agree their web site is terrible, and they make their money on folks
forgetting to cancel their plans. Ultimately you can't get enough data to
use as an ISP (in my opinion, anyway); if you need an ISP Clearwire is the
better choice. I live in what should be (by the map) a really good area for
WiMax, and it is acceptable - but I probably wouldn't want it as my ISP.

That said, it is nice to be able to flip on my FreedomPop Photon and be
able to use a few 100MB when I'm out and about. The kids can play
Minecraft over the local network in the car on long trips, I can download
some MP3s or stream Pandora if the radio selection is poor. It works fine
where Sprint had good WiMax coverage, which is most of NC's interstates,
anyway.

I also have my car phone (the one that displays my Torque data) on
FreedomPop, that's a new addition. It basically lets me have some data.
Honestly the phone part hasn't worked well, but the data is nice. That
phone has LTE access.

It is really free, once you get everything set up correctly, and cancel the
paid plans.

T-mobile IIRC uses the ATT network which my wife has been reasonably
happy with. Actually it looks like just by switching to t-mobile I could
save $30/mo while getting 1GB more data than I have now.

T-Mobile and ATT are GSM carriers; both own their own towers but the
underlying GSM roams, mostly. All four carriers have slightly different
LTE implementations so that is going to be interesting.

T-Mobile is sly about the price of the phone though. $0 upfront for an
HTC One M8 means $636 over 2 years. Thats a little off the retail price but
Verizon will give it to me for $99, so the $700 T-Mobile says I'll save
over 2 years is more like $163...

T-Mobile stopped subsidizing their phones, and at the same time stopped
requiring phone contracts. You can buy phones outright from any GSM phone
vendor, from T-Mobile directly, or from T-Mobile on an installment plan.
You can go also buy an unlocked Nexus 5, Moto X, OnePlus One for $350, or
a Moto G for $100, or whatever, and T-Mobile will let you start a postpaid
plan and cancel at any time. If you want to go postpaid on other carriers,
you wind up paying the price to subsidize a phone, and are on a contract,
even if you bring your own hardware.

I think T-Mobile's new pricing is a lot more honest than has been
traditional in cellular - I'd rather pay the phone bill separately from the
hardware bill.

I went over the places I care about for coverage again with Republic
Wireless's map and it looks a little better than with Sprint's. I'll still
be in the dark at camp but as you say a prepaid hotspot could solve the
 issue.

Man now that I look at it there are a lot of low cost providers
piggybacking on the big 4's network. I hate the idea that Straight Talk is
sold at Wal-Mart but it might be a good deal...

ST is okay if you never have to call them (I've only called once); ATT's
network is far and away the best here, and they are the best on ATT for
high data usage. Verizon also has a cheap prepaid offering through
Wal-Mart, but I haven't looked at it because I can't take my Nexus onto
Verizon. If it appeases your conscience, think of Wal-Mart as a marketing
partner for these plans - or think how much your are putting the screws to
them, since clearly it is costing them the full $100/month that Verizon was
charging to provide that $45/month service. :)

The only thing I've missed with prepaid is roaming - Sprint and T-Mobile
are cheaper, but their coverage is spotty enough here that I'm paying extra
to avoid drops. I always avoid customer service, but I gather that is also
much worse than postpaid also.

If you can upgrade, you are probably not on contract. You won't get into
contract again until you leave and return, or buy a new phone.

One thing I did notice about Straight Talk is that the choice of phones
is limited to stuff I don't want...

I'm not sure which CDMA phones work, on the GSM side anything unlocked - or
locked to ATT, for ATT SIMs - is fine.

Who was it that had Republic wireless?

I don't, but multiple friends have recommended it. It is local (Cary NC)
but I've never actually met anyone who works for them.

I've been thinking of making the switch, which phone do you have? The two
choices are Moto X and Moto G. I'm curious if the X is worth the extra
$150. It looks like either of them will smoke my iPhone.

The G is a strong entry-level phone, but the X is really nice - I
considered switching my Nexus 5 for one, and people who have done so are
generally happy about it. That said the X+1 should be out very soon,
though I'm not sure how long it will take Republic to offer it. If you
bought the G and were happy with the Republic service, you could probably
recoup most of the cost of the phone on CL or eBay - they are locked to the
carrier - and then get whatever you wanted at the time.

I guess the fact that with Republic wireless I'll be saving enough to pay
for the X every 5 months ought to push me to the X. Also I've been pushing
the Made in USA thing for awhile and the X is pretty much the only one...

That's the truth!
