Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-12 Thread Curt Raymond
I'm in no hurry, just tossing the idea out there. I think I'd want $25 plus
shipping which is right around what I paid for it. Thats probably a low price
but I'm not in it to make money.

I think Phillip was reasonably happy with our deal even though IIRC I made him
provide glass for his lantern.

I know Mike at OldColemanParts pretty well, he was at the Coleman Collectors
Convention last June.

The new fuel pickup is not required, I didn't do it on the 220F that I
converted but without a straight tube you get bad pulsing at low temps. At some
point I plan to pull the fuel/air tube and put a small piece of shrink wrap
tubing over the air hole. Makes it very easy to go back to instant-lite if I
want. Valve position won't matter as long as I remove the rod inside the tube.
I'm not real worried about that, I don't care if the valve needs to be open all
the way, its not like the valve controls brightness anyway.

You can get around the terrible Coleman mantles by using Peerless, Mike has
them for just about the same price as Coleman. Thorium coated so they're much
brighter, they're also slightly larger. Extremely popular in the Amish
community where they live by gas lights. For a #21 replacement you'd get a 2C
HG, the #99 is replaced with a #24 Peerless. In our camp I use the 2C HG
exclusively, they're much brighter on our propane fixtures.

I'm a little low on cash right now; we had the fridge die Monday night and I
need to put a new front pipe on a 210.025...

Anyhow, I think mine is a 220H, and I put a proper kerosene dip tube in it as
well as the appropriate generator; take a 220 generator and remove the jet and
pricker; replace them with the jet and pricker from a 200A generator. Put a
preheat cup on it and away you go.

Btw the new Coleman mantles SUCK; they are not thoriated and only produce half
of the light because of it.

I understand that on the single mantle lanterns, you probably want to use a #99
mantle for better heating of the generator.

I take it you know of oldcolemanparts.com ?

Oldcolemanparts still has kero fuel tubes; the number is 220F1421, made for the
206 and 231 (but it fits nicely given the 220 part number base!)

You can get away without the kero tube, but you have to open the valve a lot
with the gas tube in it, since you aren't going to get any significant quantity
of vapour through the top holes in the outer shell?

Ooops, sorry.
Forgot to mention metal prep.
The 6P principle states that "Proper preparation prevents piss-poor
performance"
From this list, you now have about 90% of the wisdom of the world which
will allow you to turn the watering can into a planter.

Fred Moir

So, once you have soldered or otherwise patched the holes, you should
drill some nice new ones to provide drainage if you wife decides it would
make a good planter.

I cannot help but think that the only proper way to repair the
watering can is to solder it.
Messing about with epoxy or POR etc is just not the right way to fix
something like this.

People repair fuel tanks with plastics etc in an effort to avoid the
big BOOM but there is no need to worry about that with your watering
can.

If you solder it reasonably nicely it will be almost invisible.

I don't think there is any real issue with soldering galvanized metal.
Welding it gets it hot enough to give off bad fumes but soldering is
not likely to get anywhere near that hot and if you do it outdoors, I
see little danger to you.

In order to do a good job on galvanized metal you really need some
acid to eat away the galvanized coating anyway.

I did some soldering of galvanized eavestroughing a number of years
ago and did not have the right acid but did manage to do it with the
flux intended for soldering together copper pipe.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-11 Thread WILTON
We have several "nice-looking" and very functional chairs and small tables
around the house that I salvaged from neighbors' discard pile at the street
45 to 50 years ago. One of my favorite chairs is a $2 maple chair that I
purchased in a "junk" store in Macon, GA, 50 years ago; 'repaired and
refinished it. We still call it the "$2 chair." In the MI UP 40 years ago,
SWMBO went "junking" through the countryside one afternoon and came home
with six oak cane-bottom chairs @ $4 each; used parts of the worst one to
repair the others; refinished and installed new caning; 'been using them at
our kitchen table for 39 years; replaced cane bottoms twice since I did 'em
first 40 years ago. 'Went to a party one night at a friend's house at
Mather AFB, CA, in '62. As I pulled into friend's driveway, I noticed small
butterfly table lying on discard pile at the street. I asked friend, "Are
you throwing that table away?" "Yes," he replied, "You may have it if you
want." 'Repaired it, removed white paint, refinished it with more
appropriate stain and varnish; 'in use right now in 2nd floor bedroom.
'Many more items around the house like that. 'Could write a small book
'bout 'em.

Oh, BTW, there are a FEW things around the house that we bought new, but
many of the things we enjoy most are those that had been thrown away. ;<)

Me too. Latest was the BIL's front door latch. They've been
entering the house through the garage for a couple of years now.
I disassembled it, a "quality" item, and found that ham-handedness
had broken off a too-cheap bit of zinc casting. (The thumb lever
axle pin goes through two of these ears, one was broken off.) The
crap design has too little metal in the area to sustain taking
much force. It really needs a new part, probably which can't
be obtained. I flailed around with some stiff iron wire and
managed to make a harness for the hinge pin that keeps the axle
pinned against what remains of the casting. Told 'em to treat
it gently and it might hold up for awhile, while a part (or
replacement door handle) was sought. They seemed to appreciate
the fix, and youth pastor salaries being what they are, it'll
probably stay the way I rigged it for some time, assuming it
holds up and they treat it gently.

Oh sheesh I forgot about that.

I also forgot to tell you how at the Coleman Collectors Convention last year I
was heralded as somewhat of an expert on Coleman Irons because I'd actually lit
one before. Turns out loads of folks have them that they never light. Another
guy showed up with one just like the one you sold me and we had it going in a
few minutes by giving it a new fuel cap seal, which is the same thing I had to
do to mine.

Still need to take mine apart and give it a good inside cleaning, it tends to
"whoof" and go out. Its got some dust inside the burner. I considered it
yesterday but instead worked on a video. I make a little money off the videos
(about $5/mo) so I figure time invested in making videos is worth it.

At some point I intend to do an iron video. I'd like to do it as a period

Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-11 Thread Curt Raymond
Its kind of an "at any given moment" thing.

I was pleased this year to get up to 4 out of 5 snowmobiles running at any
given moment. I probably could have gotten the 5th one but it needs some body
work and I was having so much fun with the other 4...

I only count lanterns when they work, theres at least 5 (I don't think as many
as 10) that are in line for recuperation, and some of those will get restored.
I like doing lanterns because it doesn't take very long to get one working
again and even a full restoration doesn't have that many man hours, most of the
time is in waiting for the paint to fully harden.

I really get a kick out of bringing something back to life that somebody else
has deemed "broken" a lot of times a lantern can come back to life with a new
fuel cap seal and soaking the pump leather in neets foot oil.

I converted a 220 and a 200a to kerosene a couple years ago, they'll burn
diesel too if you preheat well enough. In the end I think the
designed-for-kerosene lanterns do better with the stuff although they tend to
be less common and more expensive. I haven't bought any lanterns in so long I
can't remember the last one I bought. I figured with 5 or more waiting in line
to get fixed I probably shouldn't be buying more.

"Sportster" you mean a 502? I've got one, its okay. I've got an Optimus 8R I
like a lot more, see it in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQZ-07MMaJU

I'd consider selling my 502 if you're serious. I've even got the box and
original instructions. It was maybe used twice when I got it, I've used it
maybe 5 times. Probably 2 quarts of fuel total in its life.

It's common behaviour in this group, and with a subset of perfectionists.
I can't look in any direction in this shop without seeing something that was
broken and is now working.
Most of us have a healthy attitude toward this tendency since we do buy new

[MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

Is this a count of the things you have restored, or things you plan to restore?
For me, the original intent was to restore or repair things and continue to use
them, but the fact is that I have a full shelf of (and more than a few in the
yard) items that need a little TLC (translation - they don't work, and most
people would throw them away). Oh well, I may as well own up and acknowledge
that other people did throw them away before I claimed them as mine. I suspect
this may be an OCD - type of behaviour, but I rationalize it by maintaining
that I am doing my part to "reuse, recycle, restore" and be green. It borders
on taking pride in living off the discards of others. Anybody else have this
tendency?
P.S. What is a schneemobile

Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-10 Thread clay
instructions call for putting an initial coating of POR, then soak the patch
material (fiberglass works) and using the brush, mate it to the lower coat.
Give it a few minutes to set up/tack and paint more layers. Paint over it when
done

That is my M.O. Keep finding the stuff I already had in the parts area, then
it goes missing, but ends up just where I left it. In the mean time, the other

I have some random, close-weave fiberglass; I'll use very small pieces on
the holes as necessary. Bottom is too uneven for piece on entire bottom.

Quite thin, like most paint. You could pour a small amount into a cup and
let it harden for ten minutes.
You could also take some fabric or fiberglass (might be some fabric in the
kit? Usually looks like a little hanky), paint some POR15 on the fabric
and then hold that over the hole. A really swanky fix would involve a
piece of fiberglass mat exactly the size of the bottom of the can...

All I have is a Versatrailer.Well, I do have a junk knockoff
stove. But nothing else Coleman.

I've only got 1 Coleman, a circa 1974 dual mantle that has been
converted to kero. I also have a somewhat new-ish (maybe 1980's?) 2
burner stove.

I wouldn't mind having a sportster tho.

Great!

Remember what I told the other poster about using 2 sheet metal screws with
rubber gaskets, otherwise you'll waste a lot of the POR15. You'll only need a
little for this project.

I've got a can of POR15 gas tank sealer on my workbench that is, I think, 2
years old. I originally bought it to seal a lantern. I think its done 3
lanterns now (I only seal the bottom which is the point most likely to rust)
and a lawn tractor gas tank...

Clean loose scale when dry. Paint the inside
with POR 15. After dry, recoat if necessary,
but for pinholes, one coat should do. Then paint
with "galvanized" paint

You may want to paint the underside too.

OK, here's another chance for y'all (Southern for youse guys ;<)) to
excel.

We have an antique, galvanized steel watering can almost identical to the
one shown in the following link:

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=antique+galvanized+watering+can&id=2C3B1E48FDA1402B82F35E24BFA2BAA0194CEFBB&FORM=IQFRBA#

SWMBO's mother had it sitting around her yard MANY years (I remember
seeing it there sixty years ago - 'thought it was old then). Son # 1
shot the side of it with a B B more than 50 years ago, so it still has a
little B B ding on the side that has not been a problem. SWMBO's been
using it around the yard for about 43 years. Well, I was sitting out on
the side terrace a little while ago enjoying the sunny, 82° afternoon,
picked up the watering can and held it up to look at the bottom of it and
noticed 3 or 4 small holes in the bottom. Finally, here's the question -
chance for y'all to excel - how can I clean the inside, bottom of it well
enough and then, maybe, pour in some type of epoxy, or goopy material
which could ooze out through the little holes and seal the can so we can
keep using it for another 50 years? Suggestions, tips?

TIA

Clean loose scale when dry. Paint the inside
with POR 15. After dry, recoat if necessary,
but for pinholes, one coat should do. Then paint
with "galvanized" paint

You may want to paint the underside too.

OK, here's another chance for y'all (Southern for youse guys ;<))

to

excel.

We have an antique, galvanized steel watering can almost identical

to

the

SWMBO's mother had it sitting around her yard MANY years (I remember

it there sixty years ago - 'thought it was old then). Son # 1 shot

the

side of it with a B B more than 50 years ago, so it still has a

little

terrace a

little while ago enjoying the sunny, 82° afternoon, picked up the

watering

can and held it up to look at the bottom of it and noticed 3 or 4

small

holes in the bottom. Finally, here's the question - chance for y'all

to

excel - how can I clean the inside, bottom of it well enough and

then,

maybe, pour in some type of epoxy, or goopy material which could

ooze

out

through the little holes and seal the can so we can keep using it

for

another 50 years? Suggestions, tips?

SWMBO's mother had it sitting around her yard MANY years (I remember seeing
it there sixty years ago - 'thought it was old then). Son # 1 shot the
side of it with a B B more than 50 years ago, so it still has a little B B
ding on the side that has not been a problem. SWMBO's been using it around
the yard for about 43 years. Well, I was sitting out on the side terrace a
little while ago enjoying the sunny, 82° afternoon, picked up the watering
can and held it up to look at the bottom of it and noticed 3 or 4 small
holes in the bottom. Finally, here's the question - chance for y'all to
excel - how can I clean the inside, bottom of it well enough and then,
maybe, pour in some type of epoxy, or goopy material which could ooze out
through the little holes and seal the can so we can keep using it for
another 50 years? Suggestions, tips?

TIA

Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-10 Thread Curt Raymond
We go through this with Coleman lanterns all the time. They get water in them
from condensation or whatever and get rusty. In most places just cleaning isn't
enough because it'll rust again.

Get the fuel tank sealer kit from POR15, use the marine clean and metal ready
to get the tank good and clean. DON'T open the can of sealer. Take 2 sheet
metal screws with rubber gaskets (probably have to make the gaskets) and run
'em into the top of the cap. Now your can is easily resealable.
Put about an ounce (maybe 1/4 can) into the tank (follow all the other
instructions up to this point), slosh it all around good, let it dry for a
couple days, no added heat, that'll make it bubble.

Yeah its probably more money than its worth but it'll make sure you never have
this problem again. Careful though, this might start you down the road of
fixing things and the next thing you know you'll have a like-new mower...

This post reminds me of a problem I have been stewing about. I have an old
McLane (the actual brand is Montgomery-Ward) front-throw reel mower which has
been sitting out in the back yard unused and in the weather because it became
difficult to start last year. It looks like the one in this link, except you
have to mentally erase all the paint and imagine how it would look after years
of hard livin'.

http://www.mclanemower.com/reel_mowers.htm

In the process of cleaning the carb and replacing the old diaphragm, I
discovered that the gas tank is kinda rusty inside. Its really hard get any
access inside there, but I did put in some loose hardware and shook it about
with some gasoline, then poured out the rusty mixture. Lathered, rinsed,
repeated several times. That was two months ago. (I suppose all the rust I
removed has re-established itself due to this recent neglect.) I plan to shake
it out again, but I am seeking advice in case someone has had some experience
cleaning out a tank like this. Looking at the prices of POR 15, I don't think
this old machine justifies spending that much money. Would drying it out, then
keeping a mixture of motor oil and gas keep the rust to a minimum? Of course, I
realize the "correct" solution is to replace the tank, but that ain't gonna
happen. The most I would spend would a couple of dollars. Any suggestions?

'Thought about putting a bit of gravel in can and mounting it onto back of

Hey thanks, G Mann, for that suggestion. It sounds like it would do the
trick and come in under budget. If you think you hear your ol' tractor
goin', its probably just me trying your remedy.

2013-04-09 Thread G Mann
I have one. Don't know how it might work in your case so I'll just tell you
how I did it.

Same situation, same issues, rusty fuel tank, rototiller on the farm.
Removed the tank, sealed off the outlet with a fitting. Put masonry sand in
the tank [about 1/3 tank full] with dish soap and water [a little soap,
enough water to leave some "slosh space" in the tank.
Tied the tank to the wheel of the tractor and went plowing for a couple
hours.

Untied the tank, dumped the sand, soapy water, and rust out of the tank.
Removed the pipe plug and flushed the tank with clean water and let it
drain dry, then blew it out with compressed air.. Inside of the tank was
shiny fresh.. rust all gone.

Good luck... Tumbler wheel of some sort perhaps?

Grant...

Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Easy peasy.

Soak the bottom in vinegar or other mild acid (I use citric acid, #5 was $20
from Amazon) for a couple nights. Put a handful of roofing nails inside and
jangle 'em around to break loose any rust.
Solder or braze the holes shut. I remember Mr. Rogers doing that on one show.
Then coat the inside with POR15.
Perhaps instead of brazing use POR15 putty to fill the holes, sand to shape and
then coat (inside and out) with POR15. Handily POR15 comes in silver.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Leaking watering can

2013-04-09 Thread OK Don
I heard stories (can't verify) that motorcycle guys whould dump a bunch of
loose nits and bolts into an old fuel tank, throw the whole thing in the
back of a car and drive around for a month or two to knock all the rust and
scale loose. Then dump the hardware out, rinse with water, let dry, then
use POR 15 or one of the gas tank sealants to patch the pin holes.
I'd think this would work for a watering can just as :-)
YMMV.

I'd probably just pack some duct mastic in there, but that's because I have 7/8
of a tub left over from my HVAC work last year.

Otherwise, I'd buy some epoxy gas tank putty, give the can a once-over with
Scotchbrite or steel wool, and seal the inside of the can with that.
