The star ones suck, thats whats wrong with them. IIRC there was something about
the star that obscured your ability to reef down on the mounting bolt. Maybe it
was the York AC compressor, I don't remember now.
On the '83 the "wrong" thing was me not realizing you had to loosen the
mounting bolt before tensioning so I bent the tensioner, it never worked as
well after that...

Ooooh, I forgot about the star adjuster ones. Those were the worst. Ugh.

I’m going to drive it a little bit more and then check the tension again. I
just love using my Kriket tool. Simple thing that’s super cool.

Anyone happen to have the specs for the belt tensions?

Winter has finally arrived in Florida - it was a balmy 78F with no
humidity as it’s been all week. Wonderful weather to work on the car…

Some background:

PO replaced the master cylinder or booster during his ownership, and
while doing so slathered brake fluid down the firewall and under the
car as it dripped. This stripped pretty much all of the paint and
undercoating on the frame rail and area around the trailing rod joint.
This was making me nuts since it’s the only place the car has any
visible rust, even if it’s only surface rust and you would have to get
on your hands and knees to see it - but I knew it was there….

So I scraped all the loose undercoating off to where it was firmly
bonded to the frame and cleaned all around the suspension rod joint
mounting. I got one of the “kits” that the POR-15 folks sell for
$19.00 on the Amazon and used all the chemicals to properly prep and
paint the surface. After it got tacky I sealed it all up with some 3M
Professional Grade Rubberized Undercoating. Nice.

While I was under the car and poking around I noticed the belts on the
alternator were really loose. Hmm. Power steering belt wasn’t bad, but
AC compressor belt was loose, too. Fortunately, this was a job I had
anticipated since so much of the rubber and soft parts on this car are
tired due to age and lack of use.

So off I went to loosen all the belts and replace them. Arrgh. All I
can say is if there was a conversion kit to change an OM617 from
fractional horsepower belts to a serpentine belt, I would be all over
it. Luckily I didn’t encounter any issues with the funky alternator
adjusting bolt. I got to dig out my Krikit belt tension gauge and put
it to work - probably the first time in 15 years I’ve used it. What a
great tool.

Lastly, in the middle of the POR-15 stuff since I had to rinse, dry,
etc., etc., I prepped and painted my wiper arms as they were pitted
and had a little rust and after all was done I installed them with new
Bosch wiper blades to replace the (gasp!) Rain-X wiper blades.

Needless to say I took a pre-emptive dose of my 800mg time release
ibuprofen. I’m thinking I’ll be paying for this in the morning. Low
impact tomorrow, just car washing.

Re: [MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-12-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Actually, it’s for yesterday and today….

Yesterday I replaced the rear shocks, which were the original Bilsteins with MB
numbers on them, with new Bilsteins. Pretty straightforward job, took about an
hour, not bad. To be honest I couldn’t really tell a difference, but I don’t
drive the car aggressively, so it’s hard to tell.

I installed the updated secondary fuel filter head after having to drill out
and easy-out the original bolts. I’m not sure why, but they were really,
really tight. Fortunately the easy-out did the trick. Ace had my metric
socket head cap bolts for new replacements, so I got that installed and no more
fuel seepage! Huzzah! A big thank you to Clay for finding a filter head at
his knackers for me.

Today is a short day, as my youngest son graduates from college this evening.
Whoopee!

I decided to take on the engine mounts, which is a job I’ve bene putting off.
It was amazingly easy. I had already Kroil’ed the bolts yesterday in
anticipation of doing it, so everything came off without an issue. I was
surprised that the driver’s side was the most difficult to do, as the inboard
bolt is under the engine support and difficult to get at from any direction.

I haven’t driven the car anywhere yet, but just firing it up in the garage and
moving it out into the driveway I was amazed at the difference. The mounts
were really collapsed - not the worst I’ve seen, but pretty low.

Pictures can be seen here:

Got one of the mud flaps, too.

Going to go out and cut the grass for the token 2-3 winter cuttings and then
get ready to head off to the graduation.

Re: [MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-11-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Ran out for errands at lunch time to pick up some stuff from FLAPS.

Got back, got the car in the air and started the differential draining. Went
out after work was over, filled it with fresh Mobil1 75/90W gear oil.

Noticed wetness around the inside of the left rear wheel/axle, so I started
looking around. PO had complained about soft brake pedal and that he thought
one or both of the front calipers were sticking, which I haven’t checked out
closely yet. Brake hose is wet and there’s evidence of brake fluid being flung
around by the axle.

PO had a full set of ATE brake hoses ready to go on the car, so I took off the
wheel, got some wrenches, my MItyVac and siphon cup out and went to it. Took
all of maybe five minutes and I had the hose swapped with a new one. A couple
more minutes to vacuum fresh fluid into the line and caliper, and now the brake
pedal is nice and hard. I moved to the other side and it looked OK, but I shot
it with some Kroil and I’ll go back out in about 30 minutes and replace the
right rear brake hose as well.

Painters are coming tomorrow so I might have some difficulty working in the
garage depending on how they’re going to paint the door. Once I get that
sorted out I’ll start in with more fun. I was hoping to get my stock order in
at the dealer today, but no luck with that. I’ll probably clean the interior
and do some other clean up. Sunday I’ll strip the exterior of trim, door
handles and badges and get the paint sorted out.

Got a little bit of garage time in after I got home. Figured I would take a
stab at the vacuum leak - the system leaks down within a minute or two of
shutting down.

Amazing at how much I recalled amor doing this years ago. Passenger side
carpet comes up, the wiring gutter cover comes off, and there are the vacuum
lines. Try each one with the MityVac and away we go….

Found a leaking door lock actuator on the right rear door locking side. Golf
teed it out of the system and still had a leak down. Went to the engine
compartment to start at the supply side.

Yellow with a black tracer - line to the vacuum reservoir under the rear
package shelf. Plenty of vacuum and held it for a couple of minutes without
leaking down. Good.

Yellow with no tracer - line to driver’s door lock assembly - pulls vacuum but
leaks down some, which is normal as the valve on the driver’s door doesn’t
typically seal well.

Checked the yellow bodied check valve - leaking on the supply side. Bingo!

Took me all of about 10 minutes to track this down. Check valve on Amazon was
$9.00, so one’s on the way. Door lock actuator is cheap from dealer, under
$20. I’ll put that on a stock order in the morning and should have it next
week.

SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED!

It is a joy to get in the 81 240D, turn the key on, snap the belt, hit
the starter and have it shake to life the first time a piston hits TDC.
It settles into a nice klatta. The OM603s start nicely most of the
time too.

So how do we make a fortune selling 240Ds to preppers? In the next 8
years there should be a whole lot of new preppers with Andrew's line of
thinking. I'd think these new to prepping (barbara streisick type)
folks with money would like to survive and save the planet with the
retro-pious(TM) 240D.

Re: [MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-11-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Very nice. Thanks for that reference.

I've got to weigh what I do to this car based on what I'm going to do with it.
I don't want to sink a bunch of money into it at this point. I'm pretty well
resigned that it's far too nice to sell to my oldest son, as he'll literally
trash it. That would really bum me out big time.

It's nice enough that I would like to keep it, but the cost of doing so is
mildly painful with Florida insurance being what it is.

The only mitigating factor is the potential moving on of my youngest, who
graduates from college next month. Once he's paying his own way I could
potentially keep it and be ahead of the game somewhat once his car is off my
policy.

Hmmm

Cibies are better than Hellas. But both are significantly better than
sealed beams, so its up to you if you want to spend the extra $$.

If it were me, I'd put Cibies and these bulbs:

The Bosch 7” lamps are garbage compared to Hella and Cibie. That’s what I took

I'd like to see the difference between my 300TD and your car. I
guess mine has a few more miles on it and may possibly be a bit

Nothing to report from yesterday in the way of work.

My house painter called at 8:00 am and said his crew was on their way (we
hadn't scheduled a start date yet) so when I got home I had to spend my time
removing all the exterior fixtures as I had promised to do before they started.

After that I had an HOA meeting to attend, so I drove the 300D to the library
for the meeting.

I'm simply amazed at the performance of this car. I'm not sure whether it's due
to the relatively low miles, the way it's set up or what, but this thing gets
up on its hind legs and GOES! It does upshift quickly, so there may be a need
for adjustment to the modulator. It doesn't hold vacuum for long after being
shut down, so maybe that's causing the early upshifts. I'll investigate the
vacuum system this weekend if time permits.

That being said, it's definitely noisier than my later models. Not rattlely,
just noisy. Still fun to drive and spacious considering the difference in size
compared to the W126. Almost 100 miles on the clock since I got it and it's not
even down a 1/4 tank yet!

they were lots more. I haven't really done anything since then.
Cosmetics are low on the list right now, I want to get all the

Mitch, are the Hellas functionally the same? The Cibies do not come
with lamps, but quality lamps are cheap. Just like you to come up with
a cheaper alternative. Thank you!

I've got everything necessary for relay upgrades, too. I was thinking
about doing it on the W126, but the Euro headlights do such a great
job I don't really feel the need to do relays on it so maybe I'll do
them on the W123. And it's got the nice relay box on the inner fender
that makes for a really clean installation, too.

On a sort of related note, I was able to determine that the rockers
are painted DB-129, which is a dark gray color. Again, this is low on
the list, but is a cheap and easy thing that will really enhance the

Jon,

Where did you get your Cibie headlamps, and what did they cost, if I
might ask?

Fluid filmed? Is this for the undercarriage?

Stanadyne is good stuff, I prefer RedLine Diesel Fuel Catalyst, but
I've used both. After a first dose of one bottle you only need an
ounce per tank fill. It does wonderful things for lubricity and isn't
expensive, around $10-$11/bottle around here, which is 12 tanks of
fuel, about a buck a tank. I can find it on the shelf at PepBoys for
that, which is cheaper than buying a case online.

I love Desert Red, especially with a Palimino interior.

Wrenching on these older cars is far more satisfying than working on
the later stuff. It's simple, things are relatively easy to access and
there's no dealing with electronics, it's all analog. I am really
enjoying working on my W123 and W126, almost daily looking for reasons
to tinker rather than avoid like with the W140s...

Bravo! I love days like that!

There really is nothing quite so enjoyable than wrenching on my W123

worked some of his welding magic on my right rear quarter panel. I had
the whole car sprayed in a very nice “driver” job (against Dimitri’s

car had 2 colors before due to a incident with a motorcycle 25 years
ago on that right rear quarter, and the original paint was so thin you
could see primer in places.

I’ve just installed new Cibie headlamps (kept the original wattage on
the bulbs) and I cannot believe the difference. Today, I’ll replace

Do Cibies still come with 55/60W bulbs?

Hi Dan,

7" Cibies are available from Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Cibie-082440-82440-Light-Unit/dp/B008DQV88Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1479389808=8-1=cibie+082440

The price has gone up a bit, but its cheaper than other sources.

Re: [MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-11-17 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes

I run BioBor shortly after getting each car for the reasons you state. I also
had good luck with the water-wetter the one time I tried it. My '84 190D would

mitigate the issue somewhat.
The thing about a lubrication additive is that being successful with it doesn't
prove you wouldn't have been successful without it. I've never had an IP or
injector failure. I had the injectors in my '84 190D cleaned and new nozzles
and didn't really see any improvement from it.
I have seen huge improvements with Diesel Purge on neglected engines though,
its kind of magic.

that rebuilt them said they were the cleanest injectors he had ever seen, and I
had to show him my service records before he would believe they had 150k+ on
them.

When I was working in San Francisco my employer was a Stanadyne distributor. A
full case of the Stanadyne fuel additive got damaged in the warehouse and was
left sitting out on loading dock. I asked what they planned on doing with it,
and when they said they were going to throw it in the waste oil tank, I asked
if I could have it.  They gave me the whole case...

I also use the RedLine WaterWetter. It definitely makes a difference.

When I first got my W126 I ran some BioBor through it as I knew it hadn't been
run a lot prior to my purchasing it. I waited until I got home to do it just in
case it shook anything loose in the tank. I get my fuel from nearly new gas
stations that turn their stock over at least once a week, so there's really no
need for it now.

Bravo! I love days like that!

There really is nothing quite so enjoyable than wrenching on my W123
and W108. Ive just gotten Karl back from the paint shop after Dimitri
worked some of his welding magic on my right rear quarter panel. I had
the whole car sprayed in a very nice “driver” job (against Dimitri’s
wishes) in the original color “Desert Red.” It looks fantastic. The
car had 2 colors before due to a incident with a motorcycle 25 years
ago on that right rear quarter, and the original paint was so thin you
could see primer in places.

I’ve just installed new Cibie headlamps (kept the original wattage on
the bulbs) and I cannot believe the difference. Today, I’ll replace
the left fog light (corroded reflector) with one I purchased on eBay.
The windshield guy is also coming today to replace the original and
the trunk seal. Yes, I have the MB seals….I learned that lesson a long
time ago. Thank you, Jaime.

Later this week I’ll get the car fluid filmed (in all the right
places). I used to do this, but my friend has a gun and shoots out of
a 5-gallon can with the car on a lift. Painless!!!

Diesel Purge is great stuff. I always fill the new fuel filter with it
because I never think to get diesel in advance of working on the car.

It’s been warm so far this year, but cold is just around the corner. I
am going to prep small bottles of Howes Diesel Conditioner for winter
use. Thinking of switching to Stanadyne after this bottle is exhausted

Happy Wrenching!

Got home from work, took care of some domestic stuff, starting the oil
sucker before I began.

Changed oil (Delo 400 LE 15W40) and installed a Mann oil filter. There
was a spare Mann filter with the car, but when I took it out of the
box and inspected it the bottom rolled edge of the metal part was
rusted or corroded. No way I was putting that into the engine, so my
shelf spare went in. Always good to have a spare!

Removed the air cleaner and found one of the buffers broken. The metal
cups/heat shields were all still there, which was nice to see. I used
one of my $6.00 M119 air cleaner buffers (MB part #1039880111, $6.00
list) that I suspected were the same and it was. It’s possible they’re
slight slightly taller than the W123 part, but that would be the only
difference. Someone had already trimmed the inlet elbow edge off, so
the sealing ring came out easy and was still nice and pliable, so no
need to replace it.

With the air cleaner out, I pulled the banjo bolt on the back of the
intake out and cleaned it. It was pretty clear with just a little bit
of crud in it. This car will stand up on it’s hind legs without hardly
any effort so I’m sure the line isn’t plugged, but I’ll check it this
weekend when I have more time. I also noticed the ALDA is still sealed.

O-ring on the air cleaner drain tube could stand to be replaced - it’s
NLA, but the oil dipstick O-ring is the same size and it’s still
available. Another item for the parts list to call in tomorrow.

Changed the two O-rings on the filter tube (thanks, Curley!) and got
four quarts in through the filter housing. Put the new Mann filter in
and closed things up. Got another two quarts into it to hit the mid
point of the dipstick and all was well.

Cleaned the battery terminals and ground cable. Put some protective
goo on the terminals.

Took it for a quick ride up to Advance Auto to pick up an online order
for some rust neutralizer I had sitting there. Ran great with no problems.

Some observations:

Vacuum levers on the throttle linkage on the top of the valve cover
are nearly worn away. I wonder if they’re still available?

Cigar hose is cracked right near where it connects to the filter
housing. Not leaking, but the hose is pretty hard. Another parts order
item.

Would like to find one of the “flat” one piece breather tubes to
replace the awful conglomeration of tubes, rubber elbows, clamps, etc.
that are in place now. I remember well when MB came out with the one
piece flat rubber tube - it’s still in the EPC but doesn’t appear to
be available any longer.

Spring for holding power steering filter in place is gone. Another
item for the morning’s parts order.

Just got a can of Diesel Purge tonight in UPS. I was going to do a
purge and fuel filters tomorrow, but with the cigar hose in
questionable condition I may wait until I have the new hose.

Rockers are faded. I’m wondering what color paint they were? They
weren’t black, more of a dark gray. Easy/cheap fix and makes it look
much nicer.

light (corroded reflector) with one I purchased on eBay. The windshield guy is
also coming today to replace the original and the trunk seal. Yes, I have the
MB seals….I learned that lesson a long time ago. Thank you, Jaime.

Later this week I’ll get the car fluid filmed (in all the right places). I
used to do this, but my friend has a gun and shoots out of a 5-gallon can with
the car on a lift. Painless!!!

Diesel Purge is great stuff. I always fill the new fuel filter with it because
I never think to get diesel in advance of working on the car.

It’s been warm so far this year, but cold is just around the corner. I am
going to prep small bottles of Howes Diesel Conditioner for winter use.
Thinking of switching to Stanadyne after this bottle is exhausted

Happy Wrenching!

Jon
