Re: [newbie] Heh, my XWindows screen is enormous... what did I do wrong?
Nojust get back to your console (control-alt-backspace will kill X if nothing else!) and re-run your video setup. "/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup" or "/usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config" are the two most popular config programs for X. Be sure NOT to select the setting to allow the display to be larger than your actual screen size. Also make sure you have properly identified your video card and monitor. If necessary, run xf86config and say you want to specify your monitor settings and select a slightly more conservative setting than your monitor will actually perform. i.e. instead of stating that your monitor will do 1280x1024 in 32-bit color at 70 hz with a horizontal synch of 60-90 hz, say it'll do 1024x768 in 24-bit at 60 hz, etc. Good luck! John Hrmmm... still no luck. I'm trying to use a Riva TNT2 Ultra card, but obviously in 6.0 there's no support for it. So I've tried a variety of options, from just the plain TNT to Unsupported Cards. I'm also using a Gateway Cystalscan 17" monitor. When I run startx, the screen is still way too big. If I Ctrl-alt-bspace back out, it shows that it is putting it in 320x204??? Crazy. I've tried everything from 16 color VGA all the way up, and still can't seem to find the right combination. Re: [newbie] Modem is busy, but it really isn't
Mike, First of all, I hope your modem has jumpers. If not, I can be of no help. I had the same problem with my PnP USR Sportster 33.6. Everybody told me that isapnp would work, but it didn't. I even did the confusing setserial stuff everybody told me to do and nothing worked. My modem has jumpers, so I just jumpered it to the COM # and IRQ instead of leaving it jumpered as Plug and Play. If yours has jumpers, jumper it to COM1 and the generic IRQ 3. I don't know how to tell what IRQ to really use, mine was already set to 3 so I used it and got rid of the "modem busy" messages immediately. Most likely you can just change the COM jumper and leave the IRQ jumper alone. I don't dual boot, so I don't know how this will affect Win95 -- you might have to remove the modem configuration and let it detect and reinstall it again as a non-PnP device. [newbie] Linux Machine Freezing
One of the main reasons I started using linux was the much touted great reliability and minimal crashes. However recently I have had considerable problems with the machine (pentium 450) freezing up when left alone for several hours. The situation is that I am running KDE and using Kppp to maintain a connection to my ISP. No other programs are running during these times except daemons. When I return to the machine my mouse is completely unresponsive as is the keyboard. At first I thought maybe a screen saver was doing it, but it did the same thing last night with no screen saver running. I have looked at the system log but don't see anything obvious. Ideas and suggestions for solving this would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Eric Mings Ph.D.

Re: [newbie] Linux Machine Freezing
Eric.. I have had this problem before in Windows. The fix was I had to setup the power down functions in the properties where the screen saver is. What happens is after 1 hour the computer will start shutting down my hard drives and will not wake them up when I come back and making me restart the machineI don't know if Linux has this option yet (as I am just installing it and getting it to limp for me atleast.) but, check that and see if that could be the cause. RE: [newbie] Restricting user access by IP
I have spent allot of time with /etc/httpd/conf/access.conf httpd.conf(many hours). The results I'm getting are not what I'm looking for! I can restrict users based on subnet but not at the ip level no matter what $%* I do My assumption is that, the above mentioned files will not restrict users from telnet access. You're right, telnet is handled by the inetd daemon, you have to configure the following files: inet.conf - to enable the telnet daemon (I guess you already have this running) hosts.deny - here you specify which hosts are not allowed to access the service you specify in your machine hosts.allow - like hosts.deny, but the other way :) My suggestion is: disable everybody in hosts.deny and enable just the subnet you want in hosts.allow. In your case it could be: hosts.deny: ALL: ALL hosts.allow: in.ftpd: here_is_your_subnet Please note that, for this to work, you must have tcp wrappers running, I think is always running by default, so you shouldn't have any problem. BTW, all this stuff is better explained in NET3-HOWTO, you should read that document Regards, Toshiro.

You are correct, 6.0 doesn't support the TNT2. You can download and install the patches from Nvidia. [newbie] Executing binaries in Mandrake 6.1
I have been trying to figure out how to set up games, etc on my computer running Linux Mandrake 6.1. I downloaded linux-doom-1.8.tar.gz and have extracted it okay. However, I have not been able to launch the game. I have a couple of different executables to run, but I keep getting a message "cannot execute binary file." The executables are "sdoom" or "xdoom." According to the README file, I am suppose to be able to launch "xdoom" from an x-server. I'm not quite sure what that means, but I was thinking that it meant that I could run it from within KDE. So, I started up a konsole window and tried to start the game by just typing "./xdoom." This is where I see the message "cannot execute binary file." I also get this message if I am at the command line "outside" of KDE (I haven't started xwindows at this point). Another thing that the README file says is that I need to have these executables in my path. Which file would I edit to do this and what would the syntax be? The path for the extracted doom files is /opt/doom-1.8. I have also been trying to find out how to exit KDE down to a command line (like DOS mode only in WIN98). Could someone tell me how to do this? In conjunction with the key combination control-alt, the f-keys numbered 1-6 are mapped by linux to access 6 different consoles and the f-keys 7-12 are mapped to access 6 different x-sessions. So, to get from your x-session that you booted into, to a console, just hold down the control-alt key combination and press f2 (f1 is already full of messages stuff from booting and starting your x-session, so is probably best left alone, at least for now). You can sign in as anyone you want and be in a console just as if the x-session wasn't running. When you're done and want to go back, just hold down control-alt and press f7 (f7 is the f-key mapped for the first [session 0] console session). You'll pop back into your x-windows session, just as it was when you left. Alan
Re: [newbie] Linux Machine Freezing
Well, I would guess Linux does not have the information to wake up something shut down by a hardware or firmware power manager. I turned off the power savers on board and let my machine hum. I use it as an alarm clock, you see. The mp3s I hate the most blare at me from the other side of the room after 7 hours of the machine's sitting there. And I am running KDE, vigmeup, and Kppp. Civileme Eric Mings wrote: One of the main reasons I started using linux was the much touted great reliability and minimal crashes.

According to the README file, I am suppose to be able to launch "xdoom" from an x-server. To start, from an xterm (NOT from a console) Well, first find the exact directory where xdoom resides, then type in the complete path without the dot on the command line. Alternatively, edit the menu, add an item for it, and use that same path there in command. Then you can start it from within KDE which is just an X client. Civileme
[newbie] ISP dialup help
Ok, so I'm using the good old fashioned command line to try and configure my dial-up connection since my XWindows won't work so I can download the latest XFree. I *THINK* I configured ppp-on correctly. My modem seems to connect and stays on for a while, but after a couple of minutes if I don't do anything it hangs up. So what I need to know is how I can see if it is actually logging in correctly, or just hanging out waiting for a correct login? Once I run ppp-on, it just goes back to the prompt while the modem dials out. Is it executing in the backgrounnd? Is there a screen I can bring up to see if I am connecting correctly? Also, where do I put the Primary and Secondary DNS IP addresses so I can resolve names once I'm on? I thought I read that it was in the /etc/resolv.conf, just trying to make sure. On my system I just added a couple of lines to the boot.local file. insmod ppa insmod lp My system is Suse 5.3 and this file is in /etc/rc.d. The location of this file will vary by distribution, but there will be a file somewhere, for local changes to be made at start up time. You should use the file that is applicable for your distribution. I have looked all over my system, but cannot find the file anywhere, is this named differently for mandrake, or do I even need to include this step at all? Thanks in advance!!! Joe :)

I presume you're trying the one from Cooker? I'd bet that the best way to install it would be to install Cooker first, then Licq. You could always use the --force option with rpm, but like you say, that _may_ break things. Again, I'll recommend a different that you go get a different licq rpm from http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/licq.html There's a .70f RPM at the top of that page that works fine on any Mandrake 6.0+ system (maybe even 5.x, but I haven't tried it) _without_ (this is the important part for me) any required qt2 or libstdc++ library upgrades! The only downside is that you have to specify the option on the command line- run `licq -p qt-gui` instead of just `licq`. Bero says that the Cooker package gets around this, but I'll have to take his word for it, as I'd rather not jump through hoops upgrading my libraries just to install licq. Not to knock the Mandrake distribution or anything; it's a fine product that I recommend to anyone who wants to use Linux. With licq, however, I'm more comfortable running this other RPM than the one offered in Cooker. Now, they may have uploaded a new one that doesn't require QT2 new libstdc++, or perhaps made qt2 and/or libstdc++ easier to install (i.e. no dependency issues with 6.x), in which case I'd try it again. As it stands, though, I'll stick with what works right now. -- -Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hopefully, somewhere in the HOW-TO there was a step about putting a line in /etc/fstab. Just mention either the device name or the mount point (directory) to mount, and you'll be able to access it. Let's say that your zip drive is /dev/hdd (did you create a '/dev/zip'?) and to be mounted at /mnt/zip. You could give either of two commands: mount /dev/hdd mount /mnt/zip Both would work; mount just looks in /etc/fstab for the corresponding line.
