[newbie] Netscape kills all

2000-01-21 Thread Bernardo Rodrigues

Hi All,

I have just installed Mandrake7.0 (Air) and I must say that it is an
impressive distribution. I would however say that something very weyrd
happens whenever I am running more than one instance of Netscape. I
had gftp running as well trying to dload some files and was browsing
the Net through Netscape at a certain linux newbye location when
suddenly after scrolling up on that page I got Netscape away with all.
After some seconds the X-Windows login prompt appeared and I had to
re-login into the system. This has happened for the second time in a
day. What is going on. Would anyone mind explaining.
Thanks in advance.

Bernardo

I've downloaded Mandrake 7 (Air) onto my scsi drive, and have made a boot
floppy to install Mandrake 7 from the scsi hd. My hardware consists of:
Intel pIII 500 on an asus p3b-f mb
adaptec 2940 scsi controller IBM 1 g scsi drive
  promise ultra66 ide controller with 10 g maxtor(primary master) hd, 13 g
maxtor(primary slave)hd a 24x cdrom also on the ultra66
controller(secondary master), Win98se resides on the 10 g maxtor. I want
to install mandrake on one of the ide drives but the Mandrake 7
installation only recognizes my scsi drive. What can I do to get it to
recognize my ide drives on the Promise Ultra66 controller card.

RE: [newbie] Installation blues :) Solved by 7.0

2000-01-21 Thread Mike Lee

Hello Folks.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me with installing 6.5. Your
suggestions were very helpful.

When I was reading the messages yesterday, I saw that 7.0 was out. So I
downloaded, burned, and installed it.

I want to congratulate Mandrake on making an installation that people who
aren't completely linux savvy can install without headaches! It installed
so easily, configured itself for using my cable modem for net access, and
made my life a lot easier.

Now, all I need to do is remember what my root password is and I'll be all
set

I don't think that should be a problem. From my experience, the partition

If so, suggestions for remedy?

You first make an installation floppy with rawrite and reboot your

When you are in installation process choose local hard drive as your
installation source.
rawirte is in '\dosutils' directory and the image you write on the

try the animal books.. i forget who publishes them.. but they have a

Re: [newbie] Need Help

2000-01-21 Thread Joe Bruchis

The best advice I can give someone at your level is to get a CD with an
installable image on it from LinuxMall.com. I got 10 different brands
of Linux on CD for $.99 each. It will be hard enough to install even
using the CD. Your dilemma may require you to compile binary source
code, and then you may find you don't have all the necessary files. You
are looking at hours, even days of work. The CD's come with everything
you need. You will still find later that you'll need a Linux book and a
command line. This ain't Winders!

Good luck!

Did you try sndconfig for either of these cards and manually set them up
 in there?

Yes after doing that rether than pnpconfig bouncing out at boot-up now the
sound deamon (excuse me I can never remember exact linux names) returns recource
 busy and fails.

What does your /etc/conf.modules show? At a command line, enter:
cat /proc/interrupts
cat /proc/ioports
cat /proc/dma

Do these show what you think you have configured? It might just be the
midi port that is giving you the failed message. I can't get mine to
work, but don't need it, so I removed the midi entries from
/etc/conf.modules. I've also found that sndconfig will sometimes just
keep adding entries to /etc/conf.modules instead of replacing them. Try
working with just the older 8 bit sound card first.

  Hi all

I have just installed mandrake Linux 6.5
 SNIPED
Second: I have 3 IDE buses and 2 Soundblaster soundcards so far I have been
completely unable to sort out my isapnp.confg
  Soundcard 1:
Soundblaster AWE32pnp also uses gameport and IDE_2 (numbered 0-2) for
auxiliary CD ROM (I don't mind if this has to be disabled)
  on OS/2 this runs
  DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SBAWED2.SYS /C:1 /D:3 /H:5 /I:7 /A:240 /B:24 /M:330
  /N:SBAUD1$
  /P /G /Q

  which means:-
  Card: 1
  Lo DMA: 3
  Hi DMA: 5
  IRQ: 7
  I/O address: 240
  MIDI I/O: 330

Again it would be nice to use the card as it is good but if I have to
  disable
it, it would be tolerable it is plug-n-pray therefor the parameters my be
  changed providing no conflicts arise.

  Soundcard 2:
Soundblaster 2 an old 8 bit card set up as standard for DOS games and
  is set
the proper way (with jumpers :-))
  DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SBD2.SYS 2 5 220 8 /N:SBAUD2$ /Q

  which means:-
  Card: 2
  DMA: 1 (only available)
  IRQ: 5
  I/O address 220
  The Game port is disabled

If someone can point me to the correct documentation or a good pnp set-up
utility I think an acceptable solution should be found.

  Thank You.

Partition Magic 3.05 or fdisk from OS/2 although my disks are booting
 normally I
am unable to modify my partitions or my Bootmanager (which looks a bit of a

I had to cough up the money for PM 5.0. That worked just fine for me.

Does PM 5 have native Linux executables I do not have any 32bit windows on my
system hence I use PM 3.05 as it is the last version to have a native OS/2
executable or can it work sucessfully fron good old fastiond 16bit DOS?

I can't run PM any version in my Win95. I run the DOS version. But I
did create them from Win95. You'd have to ask the PM people if you can
create them from the cd without access to Win95.

Also most importainly will it solve my problem?

I can't promise it will fix the problem, but I had some of the same
problems with PM 3.0 which 5.0 fixed for me. Again, you might want to
ask the PM people if 5.0 will fix the partition table. The boot manager
in PM 5.0 seems to like Win, OS/2 and Linux.

Have you downloaded the *.tar file?

If you have, just do the following:

tar -xvf so51a_lnx_01.tar

This extracts of the files and puts them in a directory called /office51

file in this directory and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

[newbie] Disk Druid Probs

I just got a new HD, IBM 14Gb 7200rpm. I decided that I wanted a big chunk
for my win audio stuff (I know, windows sucks, but it has amazing audio
progs for it!!), and a small one for Mandrake Linux 6.1. Here's what I did:

I ran Partition Magic 4.0 (Win98) made a big 11.5Gb part as FAT32 for win
progs, files and etc., and left 2.5Gb free space. Then I ran the Mandrake
install and got to Disk Druid. The strange thing is, that it named my
drives "hda", and "hdc", instead of "hda" and "hdb"!! So I thought, ok
maybe this is the way it's supposed to be. I put a 128Mb part for swap on
the free space, then I tried to make a root "/" partition of 1Gb, but it
said "Insufficient memory" and wouldn't let me do the full 1Gb! Here's what
I put in when I clicked "ADD":
--
Mount: /
size: 1000 Type: Linux Native
Grow to fill?:[](no)
hda[](no)
hdc[*](yes)
--
I kept lowering the size, but the lowest I could do was 1Mb, which is WAY
WAY less than I have! So I thought maybe I need to make a "/home" part
first, so I did, same size (1Gb), same settings as above, and it made it, no
probs at all!! So how do I get this root put on? Please help!!

Also, I deleted the parts I made in Disk Druid and then tried Fdisk, but it
says something like this:

a com port. Which com is it on? If it's on COM 1, the Linux
equivalent is ttyS0, COM2 = ttyS1, etc.

Third, under the "K" menu is a group called "Internet."
There should be a "KPPP" menu item there. THAT is your
dial-up command. AFAIK, there is not a way, currently, to
set up Linux to auto-dial the way Windows does.

[newbie] Install Question

2000-01-21 Thread jangus

Just purchased Macmillan Linux which of course uses Mandrake Linux. It came
with partition magic and boot magic. Just wondering how hard it is going to be
to set up a dual boot? Do people usually run into any problems creating a new
partition on the fly?

Thanks,

[newbie] Urgent -- .Xauthority lock

2000-01-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

I just turned on my computer for the day and discovered that when I
tried to log into Xwindows (startx), I got the the following message:

"timeout in locking authority file /home/sher/.Xauthority"

My computer would then try to get into XWindows (KDE) but the blank
screen that precedes KDE would just freeze for an eternity. Not knowing
what could be causing it, I decided to experiment (safely) by renaming
.Xauthority to .Xauthority.old and rebooting. It worked! I guess it
created a new .Xauthority file (I'll find out when I reboot if that's
the case). At any rate, I got into KDE with all my settings, etc.
Everything seems fine.

My question: did I do the right thing? Or is a more serious issue
involved?

Thanks so much.

Hi Andrew

As John Aldrich has said - html and linux mail readers do not go well together.

You should have a list of settings for BT Internet that you can enter into
kppp. I'm using BT Internet, kppp and kmail to send this to you. I'm not using
ISDN but I do have the settings if you don't.

Welcome to linux,

I have a Motorola BitSurfer Pro ISDN modem and I treat it just
like a regular modem through the kppp dialer in KDE.

You need to know that the serial ports are numbered differently
in linux than in Windoz com1 is ttyS0, com2 is ttyS1 etc. If
you use the kppp dialer and enter the setup sevtion it really is
quite simple. there are a few gotcha's though. you'll probably
need to add an argument of "novj" (no quotes). Also make sure
that under kppp = Setup = New/Edit = DNS that the "Disable
existing DNS Servers" selection is NOT checked, and that under
kppp = Setup = New/Edit = Gateway the "Default Gatway
selection" and the "Assign default route to this gateway"
ARE BOTH selected.

Now there are two files which need to be edited
The first is /etc/rc.d/rc.local and you'll need to add the line
setserial /dev/ttySx spd_vhi

replace x with the port number (ttyS0, ttyS1..)

The second is /etc/resolve.conf it needs to contain the correct
DNS information for your ISP. Should look something like this

search domain_name
nameserver IP
nameserver IP

Substitute your values for domain and IP

There are a few other items to check but these are USUALLY the
offenders. Good luck and let us know if it doesn't work.

Re: [newbie] Disk Druid Probs

2000-01-21 Thread Alan Shoemaker

Jimyou're welcome. First off, hdc means the master drive on
the secondary ide controller, is that what it is? The hdb
designation would be the slave drive on the primary ide
controller.

Now as to the other problem. I told you wrong. Your /boot
partition is probably still beyond the 1024 cylinder limit. The
easiest thing to do now is go back to PM and make the 2.5 gig
area unpartitioned. Then move the 11.5 gig partition all the
way to the end of the drive (maintaining its current size) thus
leaving the first 2.5 gigs of the drive unpartitioned. Now try
your Linux installation.

Alan

Jim Garner wrote:

install all of linux on my first hard disk? Or Should I try with just the
/boot part on the first HD and everything else on the second HD?
Appreciate it if you could help! Thanks!

[newbie] .Xauthority lock -- what's going on?

2000-01-21 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

This is an update on the mysterious events surrounding my
/home/sher/.Xauthority file.

Well, I renamed /home/sher/.Xauthority to .Xauthority.old, rebooted, and
the following happened:

1) At the console, when I typed startx, I once again got the message
"timeout in locking authority file /home/sher/.Xauthority" (even though
there is no longer an ".Xauthority" file since the file has been renamed
".Xauthority.old"

2) Still, I was able to get into KDE fine, and I am writing my letter to
you from Netscape in KDE.

3) But there is no /home/sher/.Xauthority file in my home directory now,
only the renamed .Xauthority.old file.

Could someone please enlighten me on what's going on?

Thank you so very much.

[newbie] new hard drive, moving linux

2000-01-21 Thread Daniel Woods

I purchased a second hard drive to so that I could install Linux
on its own drive and leave windows with the first drive. Except
now I want to transfer the disk1 partitions (13Gb drive) related
to Linux onto disk2 (20Gb drive). The disk1 setup is as follows
(I used Partition Magic 4):
partition 1:c: win-NT (2 Gig FAT16)
partition 2:Linux / (2 Gig ext2)
partition 3: extended (6.2 Gig)
Linux swap (128MB ext2)
Linux /home (1 Gig ext2)
Linux /usr (1 Gig ext2)
d: win-NT (2 Gig FAT16)
e: win-NT (2 Gig FAT16)
partition 4: free space (3.4 Gig)

I hate the wasted space of FAT16 (a 60MB CD takes up 1.1 Gigs
with 60% waste). Can Linux read FAT32 or NTFS systems yet ?
I understand that Winblows 2000 will support read both.
Windows programs can be on NTFS, but I want program source,
images and videofiles to be accessible from Linux.

One strange thing is that d: and e: only show up in windows
explorer after I use PM4 to change drive letter, but once I
reboot then I can't see them anymore (DOS fdisk sees them).
Is this a problem with the limitation of 8Gigs, or should I
have created d: and e: first in partition 3 ?

I installed Windows NT in order to use VMware to access Linux
since I will use windows more than Linux (for now), even though
I have 10+ years of using UNIX on the job. However my ATI AIW-128
will not support the TV tuner on Win-NT. My choices are to wait
and get winblows 2000, or install win98 into partition 1 and move
the current win-NT into partition 2, or see if the TV tuner will
work inside a VMware win98 vm. And of course trying to
get dual-boot or tri-boot will be lots of fun.

Is there any Linux utility like Ghost and ImageCast on windows
which will make image files of partitions and drives so that
you can re-install or copy to another location ?

For the second drive, how would you recommend setting it up
with the idea that maybe one day I'll remove it and install it
as a primary drive on a new machine (going from hdb to hda) ?
I thought about using 6Gigs at the front for win-linux sharing,
and then install Linux-Mandrake. However I suppose that either
way, partition 1 should be a /boot of 16MB ? After that I can
just partition /, /home, /usr, etc. Is this /boot only for
1 installed linux, or will it be shared if I partition and install
another Linux (say Corel) ? If not shared, does that mean I need
to create a second /boot partition ?

Thanks... Dan.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I don't know if that makes any different but

The command to repair the filesystem is (here we will take:
/dev/hdc2 as the damaged one, which is yours.)

fsck -f -c -y /dev/hdc2

The meaning of the options:

-f : Checks even if it seems that the filesystem is
looking good.

-c : Looks for "Badblocks". These will be marked and
they will never be written again.

-y : Takes "yes" as answer to all questions. This way
you can handle hundreds of mistakes without having to
answer what to do in every single one of them. If you
don't want to use this option, just leave it away.

If the new try with fsck fails (the first try is already failed
while booting), then only remains in the most cases
formatting and installing again this partition.
