[newbie] Netscape kills all
Hi All, I have just installed Mandrake7.0 (Air) and I must say that it is an impressive distribution. I would however say that something very weyrd happens whenever I am running more than one instance of Netscape. I had gftp running as well trying to dload some files and was browsing the Net through Netscape at a certain linux newbye location when suddenly after scrolling up on that page I got Netscape away with all. After some seconds the X-Windows login prompt appeared and I had to re-login into the system. This has happened for the second time in a day. What is going on. Would anyone mind explaining. Thanks in advance. Bernardo

RE: [newbie] Installation blues :) Solved by 7.0
Hello Folks. I want to thank everyone who has helped me with installing 6.5. Your suggestions were very helpful. When I was reading the messages yesterday, I saw that 7.0 was out. So I downloaded, burned, and installed it. I want to congratulate Mandrake on making an installation that people who aren't completely linux savvy can install without headaches! It installed so easily, configured itself for using my cable modem for net access, and made my life a lot easier. Now, all I need to do is remember what my root password is and I'll be all set :) -Mike Mike Lee, Web Manager for NEEDS Inc. www.needs.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] "The three rules of the Librarians of Time and Space are: 1) Silence; 2) Books must be returned no later than the date last shown; and 3) Do not interfere with the nature of causality. Re: [newbie] Need Help
The best advice I can give someone at your level is to get a CD with an installable image on it from LinuxMall.com. I got 10 different brands of Linux on CD for $.99 each. It will be hard enough to install even using the CD. Your dilemma may require you to compile binary source code, and then you may find you don't have all the necessary files. You are looking at hours, even days of work. The CD's come with everything you need. You will still find later that you'll need a Linux book and a command line. This ain't Winders! Good luck! What does your /etc/conf.modules show? At a command line, enter: cat /proc/interrupts cat /proc/ioports cat /proc/dma Do these show what you think you have configured? It might just be the midi port that is giving you the failed message. I can't get mine to work, but don't need it, so I removed the midi entries from /etc/conf.modules. I've also found that sndconfig will sometimes just keep adding entries to /etc/conf.modules instead of replacing them. Try working with just the older 8 bit sound card first. Have you downloaded the *.tar file? If you have, just do the following: tar -xvf so51a_lnx_01.tar This extracts of the files and puts them in a directory called /office51 (or something very close to that). Now all you have to do is run the setup file in this directory and follow the on-screen instructions. I hope this helps. [newbie] Disk Druid Probs
I just got a new HD, IBM 14Gb 7200rpm. I decided that I wanted a big chunk for my win audio stuff (I know, windows sucks, but it has amazing audio progs for it!!), and a small one for Mandrake Linux 6.1. Here's what I did: I ran Partition Magic 4.0 (Win98) made a big 11.5Gb part as FAT32 for win progs, files and etc., and left 2.5Gb free space. Then I ran the Mandrake install and got to Disk Druid. The strange thing is, that it named my drives "hda", and "hdc", instead of "hda" and "hdb"!! So I thought, ok maybe this is the way it's supposed to be. I put a 128Mb part for swap on the free space, then I tried to make a root "/" partition of 1Gb, but it said "Insufficient memory" and wouldn't let me do the full 1Gb! Here's what I put in when I clicked "ADD": -- Mount: / size: 1000 Type: Linux Native Grow to fill?:[](no) hda[](no) hdc[*](yes) -- I kept lowering the size, but the lowest I could do was 1Mb, which is WAY WAY less than I have! So I thought maybe I need to make a "/home" part first, so I did, same size (1Gb), same settings as above, and it made it, no probs at all!! So how do I get this root put on? Please help!! Also, I deleted the parts I made in Disk Druid and then tried Fdisk, but it says something like this: -- This drive excedes 1024 cylinders it may cause problems with booting, and other OS's -- THANKS For any help __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

You need to know that the serial ports are numbered differently in linux than in Windoz com1 is ttyS0, com2 is ttyS1 etc. If you use the kppp dialer and enter the setup sevtion it really is quite simple. there are a few gotcha's though. you'll probably need to add an argument of "novj" (no quotes). Also make sure that under kppp = Setup = New/Edit = DNS that the "Disable existing DNS Servers" selection is NOT checked, and that under kppp = Setup = New/Edit = Gateway the "Default Gatway selection" and the "Assign default route to this gateway" ARE BOTH selected. Now there are two files which need to be edited The first is /etc/rc.d/rc.local and you'll need to add the line setserial /dev/ttySx spd_vhi replace x with the port number (ttyS0, ttyS1..) The second is /etc/resolve.conf it needs to contain the correct DNS information for your ISP. Should look something like this search domain_name nameserver IP nameserver IP Substitute your values for domain and IP There are a few other items to check but these are USUALLY the offenders. Good luck and let us know if it doesn't work. Joe Gardner
Re: [newbie] Disk Druid Probs
Jimyou're welcome. First off, hdc means the master drive on the secondary ide controller, is that what it is? The hdb designation would be the slave drive on the primary ide controller. Now as to the other problem. I told you wrong. Your /boot partition is probably still beyond the 1024 cylinder limit. The easiest thing to do now is go back to PM and make the 2.5 gig area unpartitioned. Then move the 11.5 gig partition all the way to the end of the drive (maintaining its current size) thus leaving the first 2.5 gigs of the drive unpartitioned. Now try your Linux installation. Alan Jim Garner wrote: Dear Alan, Thanks for the help! I tried that but it says the same thing "insufficient space"! And the drives are still being called "hda" "hdc". Do I have to install all of linux on my first hard disk? Or Should I try with just the /boot part on the first HD and everything else on the second HD? Appreciate it if you could help! Well, I renamed /home/sher/.Xauthority to .Xauthority.old, rebooted, and the following happened: 1) At the console, when I typed startx, I once again got the message "timeout in locking authority file /home/sher/.Xauthority" (even though there is no longer an ".Xauthority" file since the file has been renamed ".Xauthority.old" 2) Still, I was able to get into KDE fine, and I am writing my letter to you from Netscape in KDE. 3) But there is no /home/sher/.Xauthority file in my home directory now, only the renamed .Xauthority.old file. Could someone please enlighten me on what's going on? Thank you so very much. Benjamin -- Benjamin and Anna Sher [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sher's Russian Web http://www.websher.net

[newbie] Some general questions...
ok i just have a few quick questions, i have the same font problem in netscape as a few others have experienced. no matter what i switch the ^%^!%( font to in netscape it still looks like crap. i run my system in 1280x1024 and I LIKE it, but this creates a problem because netscape's text is so small. i also noticed that in the pull down menus there are some options that say "increase font size/decrease font size" but they are always greyed... it's so annoying and i hate to say it, but i wish that netscape would get their ass in gear and produce a visually pleasing, easy to use version. their software layout is backwards, and looks horible. grr. anyways.. i'm venting-and currently want to put a team of programmers together to create a GOOD browser for linux. one that looks, feels, and works nice. what's with not being able to add more than one POP mail account anyways? what about people that need to check to POP accounts? GRR. second. i am rather new to linux-my major concern in my transition from the horrible OS that micro$oft pukes up.. is now i don't know what anything does. when mandrake installes a MILLION and one programs--they go in a million places and i feel lost at my prompt.. where do i go, what do i do now? i sometimes try to compile software and it can't find libraries and whatnot -- the main one is iostream.h -- where does that come from? any pointers -- other than hacking, reading, hacking, and then reading some more? last. i'd just like to give the mandrake development team a pat on the back for doing such a good job. i like mandrake a lot... thanks mark

[newbie] new hard drive, moving linux
I purchased a second hard drive to so that I could install Linux on its own drive and leave windows with the first drive. Except now I want to transfer the disk1 partitions (13Gb drive) related to Linux onto disk2 (20Gb drive). The disk1 setup is as follows (I used Partition Magic 4): partition 1:c: win-NT (2 Gig FAT16) partition 2:Linux / (2 Gig ext2) partition 3: extended (6.2 Gig) Linux swap (128MB ext2) Linux /home (1 Gig ext2) Linux /usr (1 Gig ext2) d: win-NT (2 Gig FAT16) e: win-NT (2 Gig FAT16) partition 4: free space (3.4 Gig) I hate the wasted space of FAT16 (a 60MB CD takes up 1.1 Gigs with 60% waste). Can Linux read FAT32 or NTFS systems yet ? I understand that Winblows 2000 will support read both. Windows programs can be on NTFS, but I want program source, images and videofiles to be accessible from Linux. One strange thing is that d: and e: only show up in windows explorer after I use PM4 to change drive letter, but once I reboot then I can't see them anymore (DOS fdisk sees them). Is this a problem with the limitation of 8Gigs, or should I have created d: and e: first in partition 3 ? I installed Windows NT in order to use VMware to access Linux since I will use windows more than Linux (for now), even though I have 10+ years of using UNIX on the job. However my ATI AIW-128 will not support the TV tuner on Win-NT. My choices are to wait and get winblows 2000, or install win98 into partition 1 and move the current win-NT into partition 2, or see if the TV tuner will work inside a VMware win98 vm. And of course trying to get dual-boot or tri-boot will be lots of fun. Is there any Linux utility like Ghost and ImageCast on windows which will make image files of partitions and drives so that you can re-install or copy to another location ? For the second drive, how would you recommend setting it up with the idea that maybe one day I'll remove it and install it as a primary drive on a new machine (going from hdb to hda) ? I thought about using 6Gigs at the front for win-linux sharing, and then install Linux-Mandrake. However I suppose that either way, partition 1 should be a /boot of 16MB ? After that I can just partition /, /home, /usr, etc. Is this /boot only for 1 installed linux, or will it be shared if I partition and install another Linux (say Corel) ? If not shared, does that mean I need to create a second /boot partition ? Thanks... Dan.

[newbie] :Xauthority lock file -- Solved!
Dear friends: Well, a little troubleshooting on my part and the problem is solved. For whatever reason, the ownership of my /home/sher directory changed since yesterday from "sher" to "root." My guess is that installing a communications program called Seyon had something to do with it. After I changed the ownership back to "sher", things immediately returned to normal. I rebooted to test, renamed /home/sher/.Authority.old back to /home/sher/.Authority and now everything is fine. Thanks so much. For me the best modem for Linux is an external serial port modem. I am using a 3com/usr which costs a bit more but is well worth it. [newbie] Mandrake 7.0 ISO
Hello, my name is John, I'm from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I've been using Mandrake Linux starting with version 6, then 6.1 and a couple of days ago I checked the web site and found out that 7.0 was released. So I downloaded the ISO (yes on a cable modem :) ) and made a CD. but when I try to install it I get to the step where it said that it's initializing cd rom and it just sits there... Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I don't know if that makes any different but I'm booting with a windows start up disk and using /dosutils/autoboot/autoboot.bat to start the install and when it asks to put the CD in, I already have it in. Thank you John
[newbie] Instalation problems
Hi, when I install the "regular" install option mandrake 7 fails to find both my network cards, but if I install the custom/server method it will find both cards, the problem with the second install menu is it does not boot in to xwindoes as does the first method. is there a fix for this? The other problem a friend and myself have is that we cannot use out HP 8100 cd writers as a primary cdrom as the information on the cd cannot be accessed. they are listed as suported and show up in the configuration as mounted, but cannot read the media. For some one with two cd-roms this is fine but myself I use my HP as my only cdrom. and Finaly, do we realy need 3 or 4 partitions on the hard drive just for Linux? or can it all be installed on one larger partition? thanks Steve

Sometimes when making some configuration from your user login with su root creates those kind of problems! These will be marked and they will never be written again. -y : Takes "yes" as answer to all questions. This way you can handle hundreds of mistakes without having to answer what to do in every single one of them. If you don't want to use this option, just leave it away. If the new try with fsck fails (the first try is already failed while booting), then only remains in the most cases formatting and installing again this partition. [newbie] my Linux gui's keep crashing
Wondering if any one might offer a suggestion has to how I can get linux to work on my machine. Just had a relatively easy install using Mandrake 6.5, but my computer hangs about a minute after booting. I get the KDE or GNOME or XFREE to boot, and as I begin to look around, freeze. Every time. Only thing that doesn't crash is selecting the Failsafe option when loggin in. But the GUI's would be preferable. Anyway, thanks in advance! -Bill my system: AMD 200Mhz, 98MB ram, pretty standard devices. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
