[newbie] SIS900 Network Card + Mandrake 7.02 ISO Image

2000-03-01 Thread Jens Schliesser

Hi all,

First at all I am a Linux newbie...

I have some problems getting my SIS900 based network card to work. Although
it´s listed in hardware compatibility list, Mandrake 7.02 does detect the
network card but didnt installed any drivers. I downloaded new drivers from
the sis homepage but when I try to install them with insmod I get an error "
compiled for kernel 2.2.x current is 2.2.14 pre 15 ". Do I really have to
compile the driver ?? Do I need the kernel sources for that ?? Does anybody
else got the sis900 cards to work ???

Thanx for any help...

Ciao

Re: [newbie] Sound volume

2000-03-01 Thread Andrew George

I've got the same problem
I noticed the same thing happened with Mandrake 6.1 but the problem went away
after I played with it a while...can't figure out what I did (and wish I could
because it's not going away in 7.0 and its really annoying)

On Mon, 07 Apr 2036, you wrote:
I have installed Linux Mandrake 7.0 on my computer without any problem. And I
have run sndconfig to setup my (very) old SB16 sound card and it is running
nicely. The problem is that every time I log on (either as root or user), the
sound volume is always at maximum level and I have to reduce it manually. Is
there a way to save the sound volume setting after I have adjusted it?
 Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [newbie] Now I'm Impressed!

I wouldn't dare install W98 on my P133/64M, but under LM6.1 it runs very
well. Netscape has not crashed my box (imagine that) even w/ 30+
Navigator/mail/composer windows open! I havn't had the time to get TOO
brave w/ Linux (been using it for email mostly), but sometime I'll get
my new kernel in place (for the heck of it really, just to do it,
2.2.13-7mdk seems to be doing fine as is). When people ask me about
Linux I tell them it's a completely different animal from Windoze as far
as installing software, but that once you get things in place, THEY STAY
IN PLACE! There's no crazy computer trolls that come in and change my
configuration around and fragment my HDD in the wee hours of the AM. Of
course, I still use the W98se box to play Tomb Raider and to show my Mom
how do what she needs to do. I really hope there's not the sort of rush
for Win'00 as there was for '98. Folks that would just be sad. I don't
think W2k is on the shelf around here yet, but I havn't looked either
:~} CUZ I DON'T CARE!

I just have to share this with someone. Ya know, the more I learn about Linux

Up until this weekend I ran a dual boot system of Windows 98SE and LM7. I'm an
IT professional, and since I need to get certified in it, I decided to blow
away my 98 partition and install 2000. What a mistake that was.

First, I have to say, if Win2K is Microsoft's best attempt at a stable OS then
they need to stop smoking crack. That is the WORST operating system I have ever
used, couldn't use my CD burner, and it kept on randomly hanging on me. It
 truly is pathetic.

Personal obervations aside, I do need to run a Microsoft operating system. So I
killed 2000 and reinstalled 98 tonight. As suspected, it wrote over LILO and
couldn't boot into Linux afterwards. Luckily I created a Linux boot disk,
thinking that would easily solve the problem

Nope. I learned while installing Linux the first time that there is a
conflict between my video card and my HDD controller. Thus, without a special
vga boot parameter I get a kernel panic saying it can't mount my root drive.
Adding the parameter vga=0x0301 works flawlessly.

Unfortunately this parameter does NOT work with the boot disk I created. When I
try to use the vga parameter it tells me "valid vga options are ask, enhanced,
or a decimal number." I converted 0x0301 to decimal - no go. Tried all sorts of
options...still nothing worked. I was one step away from thinking that I would
have to reinstall from scratch when I tossed in my CD and did an upgrade.

Lo and behold, that upgrade process is the SMARTEST thing I have ever seen. It
checked my existing rpm database, found that I had everything already
installed, kept my entire configuration, allowed me to put LILO back on, and
voila! I'm back in Linux 5 minutes later and I couldn't even tell that it did
 anything.

Brilliance! Pure brilliance! From a technical standpoint thats very well
thought out. Anyone feel brave enough to try the same thing with NT or 2000?

Its nice to be /home again.

Mike

 Perhaps I should make separate /etc, /var, /opt, /usr, /, and so on,
for every file system? I'd feel pretty silly if I had made one partition
too small and eventually had to reformat and reinstall the entire system,
just because a partition turned out to be too small. That is why I want to
do this right from the beginning.

Some of the applications I plan to install I guess will end up in /usr.
I thought this was where all third-party software was installed, but
apparently some will end up in /opt? Is this true? In that case perhaps I
should make a separate /opt instead of a separate /usr?

I am grateful for all help.

Re: [newbie] Ram dectection

2000-03-01 Thread Mark Irving

You have to be careful with this one. It is recommended that before you
add the line "append="mem=128M" to lilo.conf that you test it first. When
Linux first boots, at the boot: prompt, type in "Linux mem=128M" boot that
way. You might have to change the way that Linux boots to give you some time
to type. On my computer, it only saw 64 of 128MB RAM. I added the line Linux
mem=128M at the prompt got "KERNEL PANIC", not a good thing. So I fiddled
with the settings added Linux mem=127M everything was fine. Then I could
safely add this line to the top of lilo.conf.
Here is the documentation from REDHAT: "7.1 Problems with Linux finding
all of a machine's RAM
Question:

My machine has 128 MB of RAM, however Linux only sees 64 MB of it. What is
going on, and how can I fix it?

Answer:

On most systems, the reason is that the BIOS has a limit of how much memory
it will tell the OS is present in the machine, even though the board can
have more. Common limits seen with this problem are 16M, 32M, 64M, and 128M.
To get around this, we need to explicitly specify the amount of memory to
the kernel at boot time via the mem= actual memory goes here flag.

In the following example, we have a 128M machine but only 64M are being seen
by Linux. At the LILO prompt, we type

LILO: linux mem=128M

After the machine boots, we use the free command to see if the larger amount
of memory was recognized by the kernel. If so, we can add an append line to
the /etc/lilo.conf file and rerun LILO to make it happen permanently. The
example from above could look like the following:

boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.12-20
label=linux
root=/dev/sda1
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img
read-only
append="mem=128M"

Do not forget to run /sbin/lilo -v after editing the file. "

before installing the rpm, go to a xterm session, cd to the directory that
has the RPM you want installed and try doing this.

rpm -qipl ..rpm |more

this will show you just about everything about the rpm.

To list all the files contained in a (uninstalled) package, simply type :
rpm -qpl package.rpm
You can also list just the documentation files or conig files by adding
respectively -d or -c option.

This may seem like a wierd question, but can you redirect sound output to a
remote box, I have two boxes, one main box, and one thinclient, with a
soundcard, I use it for playing mp3s at the moment, would it be possible
for me to use the soundcard on the thinclient to play sounds that on on my
main box, e.g. When I am playing Quake, I don't have sound, would it be
possible for me to redirect the sound to the thinclient?
Perhaps by linking /dev/dsp to steve.nl.net:/dev/dsp?

Re: [newbie] sound configuration

2000-03-01 Thread Rial Juan

AFAIK it is not possible (correct me if I'm wrong, coz I'm curious myslef).

Anyway, even if you succeed... The sound will probably get out of sync with the
game. The sound is a continuous stream of 1.4112 kbit/s. That's not much, but
every now and then your network will generate some "lag" when sending something
over the cable, and the continuity of your stream is not guaranteed. Result: the
sound that's being played (the sound that just came in trough the network
cable) is sound that was emitted by your gaming-machine seconds
ago. Synchronisation is lost... You die, and 5 seconds later you hear the grunt
creep up on you.

But then again, all of this only aplies if it _were_ possible to export sound to
another machine, which I seriously doubt.

Best thing to do is to just buy a new soundcard for the gaming-system. They're
not that expensive.

The copy I have says:
If you have downloaded the Acrobat Reader files from the Adobe Web site,
you must first uncompress and untar the files before beginning the
installation. Instructions for downloading and uncompressing the files
are available on the Adobe Web site.

The installation script prompts you to answer questions regarding the
installation, such as where you want to place the Reader files.
Reasonable default values are provided. Press Return to select the
recommended defaults, or enter your own values.

To run the installation script:

1. Change to the directory containing the installation script. If you
are
installing Acrobat Reader from a CD-ROM, change to the appropriate
   directory on the CD-ROM.

2. Start the installation script. The filename of the script may be
uppercase or lowercase depending on your system for example:

 # ./INSTALL

3. Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

If you make a mistake, you can do either of the following:

* Exit at different points in the procedure.

* Press the interrupt key sequence (Control+C on most UNIX systems) to
   cancel the installation.

When the installation is complete, a message appears indicating that you
have installed the software successfully. Acrobat Reader is now
installed.

Linux Mandrake is not initializing my Intel PRO/100+ Management

At the first boot up after install it did not initialize...I get a

the first boot.

I have since downloaded and installed the Intel drivers for this card but
they are not showing up after I followed the install procedures,
but they do show up in the conf.modules file.

The module for this card according to Intel is e100.o.

This system is not meant as a server but is on an NT LAN with a T1 link

cause MRTG is heavy on SNMP

Thanks to the URL's posted by you and Sam I've hopefully got a couple of other
alternatives more suitable for a newbie: ksniffer, pload, xnetload.
..
..well pload and xnetload are simple in/out graphs for a single interface of

ksniffer rpm requires an older version of a file I have, I may look at makeing
that one.

Re: [newbie] RPM question

2000-03-01 Thread Rial Juan

Of course they're compatible. rpm is just a package format. What you're asking
is similar to "are zip-files downloaded from www.gamecenter.com compatible with
the ones downloaded from www.gamespot.com?" (I'm not mocking you; this was the
first, although stupid, example that came to mind). RPM is just the box
containing some binaries, and info on where they should go on the system, and
some after-install scripts. The standard is pretty well defined, and the
linux-community is known for its respect for standardisation, unlike Microsoft
for example.

Only thing is perhaps you need to install other packages to satisfy
dependencies, but the install procedure will tell you which ones they are.

I am shure for system parts that isn't a good idea, but i want to
upgrade kdevelop. m6.1 has the beta version of kdevelop, m7.0 has the
   1.0 version.
Can I download the rpm from the 7.0 directory on ftp.mandrake.com
and install it on my mdr 6.1 ?
Can I do this with other applications like wwwoffle, or aren't the
7.0 rpms compatible with the 6.1 rpms ?

Another question that i have is, that kdevelop asks for kdoc,
but the mandrake distribution hasn't a kdoc rpm.
Where can I get the right rpm of kdoc ?
Kdevelop asks for the source files of kde to generate
some documentation, where can I find the right source
files for my mandrake distribution ?

What aboput the new kde 2.0 ? Will upgrade packages appear
for the 6.1 mandrake or only for the mandrake 7.0 distribution ?

I'm trying to install the Multi Router Traffic Grapher (mrtg-2.8.9-2mdk
RPM for
i586). I don't have this file and haven't a clue what it is or where to
get it.

  You'll find it at http://www.tuxfinder.com

flupke,

Duhoh, I did look for the file. I never thought to look for the rpm, which I
already had (on the Mandrake disk ?) :( . Oh well. Now Expect wants to
install
tk and tcl as well, round and round I go...MRTG is not a simple program and
I
hope there are some answers to your related post

Can anyone tell me where I can find BASIC informations about snmp and
  networkmonitoring please?

cause MRTG is heavy on SNMP

Thanks to the URL's posted by you and Sam I've hopefully got a couple of
other
alternatives more suitable for a newbie: ksniffer, pload, xnetload.
..
..well pload and xnetload are simple in/out graphs for a single interface of
your choice, not sure which I like better, neither is very impressive. The
ksniffer rpm requires an older version of a file I have, I may look at
makeing
that one.

I downloaded the .src.rpm version of ksniffer. I tried to install it. I ran rpm
--rebuild ksniffer.src.rpm, but it complained about not finding headers like
qcolor.h, qfont.h, qstrlist.h, and many others. I saw that those where in the
qt-devel package. What I don't undestand is that this package IS installed and
the headers ARE on my system. So, I'm stuck. Any clue?

Another thing is : even if I can install and use ksniffer, I'll be able to
monitor my network (and that's already good) but my main purpose is to
understand how those things work. So I ask again : can anyone tell me where I
could find basic documentation about snmp and network monitoring?

Thanx

 able to bring it up.

I would recommend you go to www.adobe.com and download Adobe Acrobat

With the rpm I got, I needed to get libjpg.so.6 even though I have libjpg.so.62,
what a pain. I did get it installed but is has nowhere the features shown on the
website, must be an old version. Anyway you might find Iptraf useful, no graphs
(none in my ksniffer either) but lots of info and a great manual.

Thanks for the reply. I did what you suggested and it did work - to a certain
degree. Now when I spin the wheel the cursor moves up and down on the screen,
Is that all that it can do or is something else to get the wheel to act as it
does in windows?
