[newbie] Soundcard installation problems

2000-03-20 Thread Mikael Claesson

My soundcard worked perfectly with Mandrake 6.0, but
now that I've upgraded to 7.0 I'm having problems.

Lothar and sndconfig both gimme all these error
messages all the time, but I guess that could be that
I pick the wrong options. sndconfig autodetects a
"OPL3-SAX" card, but the autoinstallation fails, and I
end up having to do things manually.

I've managed to get audio. play works fine, but in
Gnome (and Enligtenment) the sounds are repeated in
all eternity, or until I logout and X is restarted.
XMMS and X11amp just produce noise. Oh, and Linus
saying "this is how i pronounce..." in Lothar and
sndconfig is played at too high a pitch, and stops
before he's finished.

Any clues?

a crossover cable? I would assume that the wiring in the school goes to
a hub of some type that takes care of "crossing" the wires. Using the
same cable to connect the two computers won't work. Pin 1 is connected
to pin 1 in both computers etc which means that transmit is connected to

[newbie] Kernels

2000-03-20 Thread Lane Lester

A friend of mine, to whom I owe a lot for introducing me to Mandrake, asked
me to post the following questions:

I finally got around to putting Mandrake 7.0 on my notebook...
I went to the trouble to do a new install...
I installed everything I could...
I end up with 5 kernels...

vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdk
vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdkfb
vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdksecure
vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdksmp
vmlinuz-2.2.14-1mdklinus

It defaulted to the last one vmlinuz-2.2.14-1mdklinus...
The problem with that is that there was no pcmcia modules for that
kernel...
It was simple to switch them and use vmlinuz-2.2.14-15mdk...
(which has modules for pcmcia already installed)...
But what are each of these, how do they differ?
I understand secure and smp...
But what is fb?
Floppy Boot fits, but it is a large kernel for that purpose...
Why did the install give me linus rather than no-name...
Particularly since I told it I had pcmcia things?

After a reinstall I tried to access files I had backed up onto a floppy disk
before the install. Linux does not register that these files are on the
disk
and after a massive panic (I have a 3500 word paper on one disk) ran to
another
computer (Wind'ohs box). The files were still there, so I had to boot my
own
Wind'ohs, transfer them to a partition Linux can access and open them from
there. What is the trouble with opening these files from these disks?

 OK
then look for a utility called Ranish Partition Manager to donwload (free)
defrag your drive, and to simplify things create a 120mb swap and an
/partition into which mandrake will sort itself out, like many you will
probably rearrange everything several times as you learn more!!

[newbie] Atalk

2000-03-20 Thread David O

I would very much appreciate help getting netatalk to work with Mandrake 7. I
downloaded and installed the ISO image, which unfortunately does not contain netatalk.
I then downloaded the version referenced on the Mandrake WWW site, apparently
successfully.

Both atalkd and afpd appear to initialize correctly. I find the Mandrake machine
listed in my Macintosh's Chooser. Unfortunately, I am unable to log in using either
"root" or any other username/password. It seems that netatalk expects a different
password.

I *am* able to connect using "Guest" (which does not need a password). I suspect that
the problem has something to do with the "shadow" password arrangement.

Help (please)!

David

another thing: i've installed some package, then wanted to install

Thanks to you and Michael for telling how to at least get logged on.
It's evidently the X font server that has the problem, but I don't
know how to fix it. Here are the last few lines in the startx output:
(--)SVGA:XAA:Horizontal and vertical lines and segments
-FontTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno=111
failed to set default font path 'unix/:-1'
Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'

I hope this suggests something!

Subject: [newbie] Mandrake 7.0 - Installation screams 'error not enough

Hello all,

I just got a Mandrake 7.0 distribution from a computer magazine. It all
goes well up to the point that it asks me for the packages I want to
install.

I had the disk auto-allocated, which gives me around 1409 Megs for the /
partition. I chose "expert" installation (I'm not an expert, just a
freak, hehe) and development type. After that point, the installation
gives me an error saying more or less that the packages I chose are 1180
Megs in size and there's no space for all of them (like 1180 1409?)
but I could go on anyway, just I won't get all packages installed. I OK
this, to go on, and then I get a menu of package choices (Server,
Development, Games, etc.) I choose the absolute minimum, which is 1180
Megs, and when I OK this too, I get an error that the .rpms could not be
installed because of no space in / partition.

This is weird cause I restarted after I partitioned, so there shouldn't
be a problem for the installation to see the allocated space.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
GG

Uhh, haven't been following this thread, but... The standard way to start httpd
is as follows:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start

Other options besides start are: stop, status, restart and reload.

And you might use the System V init editor to start it up every time the PC
boots, but I suggest you do some research on System V bootup if it's new to you.

[newbie] 3Com 3CXe589E PCMCIA ETHERNET CARD

2000-03-20 Thread Carlos Salazar Mtz

Hi, I've been spending 2 weeks trying to install my 3Com 3CXe589E PCMCIA
ETHERNET CARD on a TOSHIBA 2500CDS with MANDRAKE 7.0, and just can't do it.
FIRST, at linux installation (when it asks if you want to configure the
net),it recognizes the card and actually it is supposed to make it work in
order to download something (crypt...) from an ftp site. It says pcmcia
probe found 1 net devices, found driver for 3c589_cs
insmod /modules/pcmcia_core.o.insmod/modules/3c589_cs.o
... it finishes installing linux succesfully and restarts..
WHEN it tries to find module dependencies it shows nothing about pcmcia, and
when it comes up to network inicialization it says:
network inicialization delayed...[failed]
AFTER logging in, if I run "cardctl ident" it says "no pcmcia driver in
/proc/devices", and when I run "cardctl config" it says the same thing, when
it is supposed to say something about the cards it detects.
WHAT i think is that this kernel version (2.2.14-1mdklinus) does't support
pcmcia or at list doesn't have the correct modules, because it doesn't even
have a "pcmcia" subdirectory (/lib/modules/2.2.14-1mdklinus/pcmcia) where i
can find "pcmcia_core.o" and "3c589_cs.o" in order to run:
"insmod [directory] pcmcia_core.o"
What I tried is:
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-12mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o, and the answer was:
"kernel-module version mismatch
/lib/modules/2.2.14-12mdk/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o was compiled for kernel
version 2.2.14-15mdk while this kernel is version 2.2.14-1mdklinus"
BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT MY VERSION (2.2.14-1mdklinus) DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING
LIKE "pcmcia_core.o" or "3c589_cs.o" IN ITS LIBRARIES.

PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Am I right here??

[newbie] Postfix or Sendmail?

2000-03-20 Thread mendes

Hello
As a newbie I did worse thing possible: rm -rf /etc. As a result I have
to install linux again (Have I?). The previous installation was RedHat 6.1 and
now I am trying to install Mandrake 7.0. Ok, here are my questions:

a) Why won't Mandrake delete all partitions when asked for? It created two new
partitions /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda6

b) It seems that Mandrake is shipped with Postfix. How difficult is it to
configure it? I had loads of headaches to get sendamail working. I hope
postfix is different. Any suggestions to get a smooth installation?

Thanks a lot.

[newbie] linux network and the internet how do i make kppp a subnetwork to stop netscape from hanging

2000-03-20 Thread Chadley Wilson

hi
my name is chadley wilson i head up the technical department of WIL-SUN
PC SYSTEMS
our company objectives are to bring technology to rural schools and
businesses in south africa.
our mission at present is to get linux up and running.

so i present the first of my difficulties
MY OS Mandrake 7.2

1) when i setup my system with its network card and the installation is
complete. i can ping and telnet all the other computers on our network.
only my Kppp connection does not work, first i get ppp daemon died
unexpectantly and the other is that the browser hangs, and i have tried
lynx ;netscape; and kde browser. none seem to
work.
if i go to linux conf and change my ip address to 127.0.0.1 (loop
back) then my internet works but no network
now i am using genius pci eth0 cards and external modems and i don't

want to route through a windows box for my internet connection. i want
to be able to dial out only when i need to and run
my network at the same time.
2) i have an AWE64 isa (a) sound card by creative and this is what
mdk7.2 has to say about that "/lib/modules/2.2.14-15mdk/misc/sb.o:
init_module: Device or resource busy

sound:Device or resource busy"
so i have done some poking around and found in LOTHAR that there are

four unknown devices made by acer there, i don't know what they are or
how to get rid of them but i am sure that
they are the reason the sound card wont work.
here's details
it says :
other devices:
Acer Laboratories inc. M1541
Acer Laboratories inc. M5243
Acer Laboratories inc. M5237
Acer Laboratories inc. M1533
Acer Laboratories inc. M5229

the very bad news i don't have anything from acer not even on the
network and i have checked all the pcs the only thing that might be
suspect is my LG. cd writer. only everything worked fine
with mandrake 6.5

3)lastly when i am online using kppp my terminal refuses to open
i think i might need to recompile my kernel but i dont know what i
am doing and so have not done it any suggestions pse

thanks in advance
all help is greatly appreciated

postfix is pretty easy to set up. In fact the config files supplied in the rpm
should work as is.

Re: [newbie] KDE intrusion on Gnome

2000-03-20 Thread Anthony Huereca

Yea, I hate when that happens. I think it happens when you run another
application from your KDE application. For instance, when you click a link in
Kmail, it'll start up a KDE browser, putting all the KDE icons on your desktop.
So I just copy and paste in Netscape now. But yes, it's very annoying to logout
to fix it. Anyway, just sharing some grief with you, I have no idea how to fix
it either.

I use Gnome with sawmill as my preferred choice. When I use some kde programs
(kmail for example) my desktop gets filled with the kde icons. This happens
some times and not others. Is there a way to stop this?

[newbie] pcmcia ethernet card

2000-03-20 Thread hello

Hi All Howz id goin?

I am having trouble getting my linksys ec2t pcmcia combo card working
under mandrake 7.0 If anyone could give me any advice I would be most
grateful. My computer is a compaq presario 1230 laptop (SUCKS)

Someone on this list mentioned using "ranish partition manager" to shrink a
partition. thank you thank you thank you. Although the message was not
directed towards me I thought it wouldn't hurt to give this excellent
program a try. I have tried "partition resizer" and "partitionmagic" from
powerquest with no luck. My compaq has a "quickrestore" disk that formats
the harddrive and removes all partitions and restores the computer to
original factory state.

I know the topic of attachments and large file is over with but my two cents
is this: I have a cable connection but I always delete attachment right
away, I don't know where they come from or what's in them until I open them,
but 30 minutes to download one email, I would be pissed too.

Re: [newbie] [NEWBIE] NIC 3C905b problems

2000-03-20 Thread Necrotica

Makes sense. However, what if the following happened:

- Mandrake was installed w/o NIC support
- Install driver
- init 1/init 5 to restart system
- Go into Linuxconf, configure networking manually and enable eth0
- Activate the changes

I dunno if this will work or not. Never tried it myself, but *I* would try it
anyway just to rule it out (I am pigheaded about exhausting all possible
resources, though). In a discussion forum such as this throwing ideas
and suggestions around might help.

At the very least there may be some information on the 3com web site about how
to get it to work. Its easy to forget to check the vendor's resources.
