Re: [newbie] modem/internet connection/cdrom2

2000-05-05 Thread mrweb

Hi Charles,

I read all of that and thank you for sending it, what I found was what I
think may be a little unusual?

When I did
cat /proc/pci
as root I got the following;

Bus 0, device 9, function 0:
Multimedia Audio controller:
Unknown Vendor Unknown device (rev 254)
Vendor id=12eb. device id=2.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 12.
Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=4. Max Lat=12.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xde80 [0xde80].
I/O at 0xb000 [0xb001]
I/O at 0xa800 [0xa801]

followed by;

Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Serial controller: Unknown vendor Unknown device (rev1)
vendor id=127a. device id=1005.
medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 10.
Master Capable. Latency=32.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xde00 [0xde00]

~~
with no - I/O

I am not certain which of the following are my modem, it almost appears
that neither are. I almost get the feeling that it is
'device 11' which also appears to be somewhat undefined?

~~~
when I did;
setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0xb000 spd_vhi skip_test auto_irq autoconfig
as per 'device 9' above
I get;
Cannot set serial info: Device or resource busy
Sounds like what kppp says?
Thanks for all of your help,
b/web
Wade
2000-05-05 Thread mrweb
Hi Alan,
When I go into my BIOS I didn't seem to locate any com ports. I was able to
find
'Onboard Serial Ports 1 and 2'
'Onboard Parallel Port'
'Onboard Parallel Port Mode' Normal
Currently I have also been advised that it may be good if I change my
linuxconf to ttyS3 and have also investigated that route towards solving my
connection woes. Please see my following post regarding ttyS3 if you think
it may be of help. Also can anyone advise as to whether or not
re-installing is possibly a good idea or not?
Much Thanks,
b/web
[newbie] scsi drives
2000-05-05 Thread Mike & Tracy Holt
Hello,
I'm getting ready to put together a new system and I'm considering using
a scsi hard drive; can anybody tell me if there is much or any performance
gain by doing this?  I've seen quite a few posts on these lists about
problems with scsi cards / scsi devices with Linux; is this normal or should
I expect things to go smoothly?
Thanks for any advise,
Mike
[newbie] Moving Linux Partition (1024th cylinder problem)
2000-05-05 Thread SM FOO
I have installed on my machine Mandrake 7 and Win98.  Linux is found in the
primary partion on my second hard-disk which is 20GB.
I would like to move (with Partition Magic) the Linux partition to the back
of the disk (beyond the 1024th cylinder) in order to keep another Window
partition within the 1024th cylinder (the Windows partition on this 20GB disk
works s slowly!).
I have downloaded the new patches for Lilo the 1024th cyllinder problem, but
don't know how to install them!  I hope you can help.
Many thanks.
Ming
(ps.  I was told that another way of addressing the 1024 cylinder problem is
to have the /boot directory installed within the 1024th cylinder, and the
rest of Linux anywhere I want.  Is this true?  If it is true, my /boot is in
the same partition as my Linux, how can I take it out, put it in a new
partition and still make Linux work?)
vickyit's probably an illusion since you're more than
likely used to windows method of echoing an asterisk for each
keystroke at a password prompt.  Unlike windows, Linux echos
nothing, so it may appear to you that it is not accepting your
keystrokes, but it is.  Just type your password and hit enter
ignoring the motionless cursor.
Re: [newbie] Color QuickCam
2000-05-05 Thread Alan Shoemaker
Billwhat makes you think that it's supported under Linux?
I have a Color Quickcam too and I've never gotten any inkling
(I've been running various Linux distributions since January,
1999) that it has any support under Linux.
First off, mine's a usb and until Mandrake 7.0 was released
there was no Linux distro I'm aware of that supported any usb
devices out of the box.  MDK 7.0 only supports usb keyboards
and mice.
Then again, you may have a parallel Color Quickcam, but even
if you can get it recognized as a device on the parallel port,
there's no no application software to support it, none at
least that I am aware of.
[newbie] /etc initrunlvl
2000-05-05 Thread Andrew Scotchmer
Just a quick question.
In /etc there is  /initrunlvl that when in command line mode is highlighted in
red and flashes!!!
Giving the 'whatis' command I got the reply 'nothing applicable'. It is also
completely empty or unrecognisable as when I try and have a look at it with vi
it attempts to make a new file.
It is owned by root the permissions are 'lrwxrwxrwx' which I understand (does
the l mean link)  but why is it flashing in red and what does it do?
Re: [newbie] What's the difference between Mandrake 7.0Powerpackand Mandrake 7.0 Deluxe???
2000-05-05 Thread Romanator
Hi,
This a four part question:
1.
As a potential customer, would you recommend the Power Pack rather than
the Gold 2000 Pack for a first timer user?
2. If so, why?
3. As I live in Toronto, Canada, I am having one heck of a time trying
find a retailer in my area who knows what they're talking about.
4. I have a Dell Dimension XPSB 733r with 128 MB. of RAM and 20 Gig.
drive. Will the Linux Mandrake 7.0 package work well on this system? My
graphics card is by NVIDIA. I would like to hear from other Dell
computer users that have Mandrake installed on their Dell computer.
Thanks for the info.
Looks as though you have either set something up in the login script section
that shouldn't be there, or your ISP needs a login script that includes that
string
You can find lots of usefull informations at http://www.mandrakeuser.org
And there are a lot of good books too.
I have one called "linux expert ressources" that helped me a lot.
There is also the "linux bible".
No doubt other people will provide good titles too.
But once you have the basic knowledges, you will find the info you need un
the man, HOWTOs, LDP, and other infos provided with your distro.
Yes. There is. If you installed the appropriate tools, type XF86Setup at a
root prompt, and it will bring up the config program.
Once you ared done with it, type startx, and it SHOULD work.
If you have problems, please post a detail of your hardware configuration.
Please understand that the only thing the installer does is use RPM to
install a list of packages.  Just like you'd do from the command line.
The same things happen in either case.  Symbolic link and environment
creation gets done by post-install scripts within the RPM package that
would run the same at install time as they do at the command line.
My guess is that you were missing other packages and took the "voodoo
problem resolution" method popularized by Windows and reinstalled.  If
you expect to get much further than the three-days-at-a-time Linux
usage, you're going to have to take a bit more time in researching and
resolving the problem.
Just as an example of the "voodoo problem resolution" method:  I work in
the IS department with one other person.  Part of our job entails
monitoring a SQLBase SQL server for crashed and hung processes.  We got
a call one afternoon that the server was hung.  I opened the console
tool, found the offending process, and killed it.  My partner, who was
in the bathroom at the time, came out and declared with a straight face
that flushing the urinal must have cleared it up.  THAT is what voodoo
problem resolution is.  No effort to understand the problem or
resolution, just declaring that "something" must have fixed it.
Can anybody shed some light on how well it utilises SMP? There are several
systems that claim supoort, but are there any benchmarks that prove that it's
something that an average user should look into?
I ask about it, because I just recently read an article hailing IBM's decision
to announce yet another Linux boosting decision to ship some hardware with
Caldera, RedHat and TurboL. and in a commentary by some IBM tech boss there was
a line that they were reluctant to take this step because Linux allegedly was
not a star when it comes to SMP. The article was about a week ago on
WideOpen.com. or this was just a CEO-speak?
Actually, the reason for the lack of Linux virus' is because it's
difficult to infect the system binaries and libraries necessary for a
good virus outbreak.
As a normal user, a virus can only affect files you own.
Re: [newbie] Re-Installing Mandrake
2000-05-05 Thread nodyak0
DO NOT even consider the 'Lnx4Win' install method.  Here is a direct
quote from their own books:
"Linux-Mandrake
Install Guide
MandrakeSoft
January 2000
http://www.linux-mandrake.com
Chapter 5 : Using Lnx4Win
Lnx4Win is what you need if you don't want to partition your hard disk at
all.
This Program will create two files on your Windows partition which will
hold
your Linux-Mandrake system: one file for the data and one for the swap.
This
installation is undoubtedly the easiest, but, has its disadvantages:
it is slow in comparison with a real installation: loopback mounting of
a file (this is the method used) is not as fast as a filesystem located
on a dedicated partition;
if you have to re-install Windows, your Linux-Mandrake system will also
be lost...
However: this is a good way to discovery Linux-Mandrake without tampering
with
your hard drive.
This is not recommended by very many people with ANY experience on Linux,
nor
from any Newbies that know how easy it is for Windows to crash, if that
happens
then you guessed it, a REINSTALL of Linux will be needed.  If you do a
regular
install with the repartitioning of your hard disk and Windows crashes, as
it is
good at doing, then Linux will still be there on its own partition
waiting for
your return.  Your decision alone. GOOD LUCK"
Re: [newbie] Mandrake-7.02.i486.iso ???
2000-05-05 Thread Hopper
There is a way to do a net install via FTP (and maybe HTTP too). I've been tempted to
try it, just to say I did, but haven't needed to. It involves making a boot disk which
contains an extremely small version of linux.
You boot off the disk, and then into the installer, where you input the address of
some ftp site which contains Mandrake.
However, finding a non ISO of the i486 install might be hard. Blashpemous as it
sounds, Red Hat might be a better choice for your particular installation.
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Demo/Mandrake7/install/pages/install.html
Has pointers on where to start. Pedantic as it sounds, you'll probably want a fast
connection.
Nathan
The stuff on emacs for example doesn't come close to explaining this
So, should i actually purchase a retail distr. of mdk and if so which
There is something for windows called GOBACK. It can really save your butt
if you are afraid about your comp crashing or getting viruses. What it does
is it puts a parition on your hard drive a size of your choice. And it
remembers certain files that will allow you to "go back in time" and
magically its restored. It keeps a record about everytime you boot up your
machine. And it boots up before windows does so if windows is gone it still
should work. A couple things incase your interested to run a defrag on it
you need to disable goback and with norton theres a certain patch you need
for it. I blew a hard drive away because of it. But GOBACK has also saved me
a couple of times. heres a link to the site
Once you are on the LILO prompt, type linux 3 and hit enter.
That will take you to the console login and will not go into the graphical
I am not sure what difference you mean in "x" and "KDE". KDE is a window
to connect to the internet via a wide-band connection such as
cable or dsl with a single nic card?
If that is the case with you, then the problem is that you
need a second nic card and need to dedicate one of the nics to
the internet connection and the other to the lan.
If I got the facts wrong, sorry for the intrusion.
Re: [newbie] Over my head(Netscape install)
2000-05-05 Thread Alan Shoemaker
Robertdon't install it, instead download the MandrakeSoft
rpm version from one of the Mandrake mirror sites listed on
the below web page (these are the 128 bit encryption version):
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fcrypto.php3
There are three files (these are the 128 bit encryption
version) to download for a full install:
netscape-128-common-4.72-2mdk.i586.rpm
netscape-128-communicator-4.72-2mdk.i586.rpm
netscape-128-navigator-4.72-2mdk.i586.rpm
or you can only download the common file and one of the other
two depending on if you're going to want to use the email
client or not.  I do a full install myself.
Glennsince this list is archived and the search routine
looks in the subjects for the search strings, I'd have to say
that seperate messages with well thought out subjects is the
best way to go for the usability of the archive.  But there
are a lot of folks using the list who don't even think about
things like that, let alone do anything about it.
I've never gotten my camera working, and would like to. I'd be really
interested to know if anyone here has or might have some pointers on how to
do it.
I have the same problem when I try to load the c-qcam driver as you. I get
a paraport busy error, and it doesn't work. I'm running Mandrake 7.0 on an
old PI 166. The system otherwise works just great, and also prints just
fine through the same port I'm trying to get the camera to work through.
Killing the lpd daemon hasn't helped, either.
I looked in the archives for this list hoping to find this had already been
tackled. No dice. I found the same paraport busy error had came up for
people when they were trying to get their Zip drives to work through the
parallel port. The solution to that problem came by creating a mount point
for the Zip drive (which I don't think is necessarily right for a camera).
I also learned that the paraport busy error only means the driver didn't
load correctly, and not that the port is necessarily busy.
A search on Deja news shows a few people asking this same question about
getting the cam to work, but no one has ever responded as far as I could
see. The Quick Cam mini-howto sorta brushed over the whole driver loading
issues, and I found no other references anywhere else.
I may come up dry here, too, but I guess it's worth a shot. Supposedly this
camera works under Linux. It'd be great if I could get it to work myself.
Thanks Aaron for posting this.
I am using the beta of MDK 7.1 and I also had the same problem with my MS
Intellimouse . The only way that I could use the wheel mouse was to open a
console as root and type 'imwheel' and then the process would start. If I
closed the window then the wheel would stop.
 I'm subscribing to the Cooker lists and read that " 'imwheel' starts
automatically with X ."  when I asked for a possible workaround for the
problem I was pleasantly ignored or overlooked.
I tried your workaround  and it works great --THANKS!
[newbie] About Linux Virusses
2000-05-05 Thread Paul
Quoted from the PCM article.
There are some 3 Linux Virusses known, or better: Trojan Horses.
The chance of getting an infection on a Linux setup is really minimal. The
linux community consists for a large part of highly educated ICT
technicians and engineers that will detect and disable a Trojan very early
and make it's existence known worldwide very fast.
To that, the Open Source development model makes sure that potential
security holes are closed quickly.
A different thing is when you use a Linux box as file- or proxy server, or
when you also actively have a Windows partition on the disk. This is the
setup of many home-users. Because the complete lack of security, windows
is extremely vulnerable for virusses.
If you downloaded a .TAR file, you should use tar xvf  to unpack
To run it from a commandline, type startx and hit enter. :)
If you want Linux to run the Graphics login again, you need to edit (as
I don't think the worry is too big. There _are_ virusses for Unix based
systems, but there are not enough people using that. Compared to Windows,
we're not worth the trouble I think. Windoze virae have a much greater
audience, and chance to create havoc (The ILOVEYOU/JOKE virus...
Melissa... etc). Also, in Micro$oft stuff you just drag'n'drop a virus
together instead of having to really program one, it seems...
I guess these are files that are constantly in use by the system. OPen
files cannot be backed up. I use TAR to backup my system to tape but have
never seen these messages. What program do you use? Do you just copy
things?
I have an SB 64/value. The setup detected it but did not play any toots
Special files are files that represent a device. You should read a book
about linux basics, it will be explained.
To make a backup, use the tar command instead of cp.
I know it can be done with Partition Magic (windows) and FIPS (dos). FIPS
Check that you do not have the netscape site as default homepage, set that
Re: [newbie] Connecting to the Internet - why is it so difficult?
2000-05-05 Thread mrweb
Hi,
I chose the dial up configuration in DrakX as I plan to run a plain old
kppp dial up connection for the short term interim. While later, I intend
to switch this set up over to a lan connection. I also did my initial
configurations using kppp, so I am still somewhat in shock, disbelief, and
dismay that I am not yet ON-LINE with a Mandrake install of Linux.
Yes the desktop is pretty, yes it feels stable and runs GREAT, yes it is
intuitive, and has an open design, everything is right at your finger tips,
but what good is all this great design, if I am not able to do basic things
like connect to my domains, via browser, telnet, ftp, etc? I can do all of
these with ease with MS, click, click, click. :) Now I am not looking for
click, click, click, but I am looking for a FUNCTIONING connection to the
internet.
I am looking for a way to leave the MS Windows Monopoly Environment, hence
my delving into Linux, and also I have been working in a Unix Environment
for the past three years, it only seems natural and sensible to me that I
would migrate to Linux.
I purchased Linux Mandrake and now Debian as well, and I am purchasing
other distros too. My reason for purchasing my Linux software is to support
the Linux community with my software $$$DOLLARS$$$ instead of having even
one more cent of my money going to MS. Yes I wanted the books, yes Debian
gave me a great bumper sticker (wow) that I proudly put on my vehicle and
now drive around Seattle with. :)
I have been wanting to write an article on purchasing and installing Linux.
I am the owner of a 'consumer advocacy' web site and I want to build a site
regarding the major companies that sell versions and support to new Linux
users. My own story of how these OS's install, function, and hopefully
dispell certain myths about installing and configuring Linux or for non
developers and administrators, installing and connecting to the internet
with Linux and report this to consumers.
As I have intonated before, I would love to see a version of Linux that was
totally geared to the old fashioned windows desktop environment users
(basically the entire country here in the US). A version that would install
as easy as DrakX does but would also connect users to the internet and the
ability to browse the web and get to their emails at the VERY, VERY LEAST,
and do this with
all of the ease that DrakX currently has built into it during the
installation of the OS, only it is lacking the connection aspects from what
I can tell from my own experience thus far, and what I have read here from
many other new Linux converts
I am a Linux newbie, but I am not what you would call totally unfamiliar
with configuring all sorts of programs and web servers already. :)
I am happy to say that Linux Mandrake is in fact, and without a doubt, the
best OS I have ever seen in my life. Although support for connection to the
internet seems to be the area that is lacking somewhat at this time. I have
Linux Mandrake, but I still am stuck living in a MS windows world. :)
Thanks,
I also have a M$ Intellimouse (PS/2) perhaps it would have been better
deemed a DumbAmouse (PS/2) type. As I think you are both very lucky to have
had it work under M$. I bought it new with my win98 system and had this
same problem using it under M$.
I had to revert to a 20 year old two button mouse in order to get any use
out of my M$ system, when I installed Linux I selected the
generic PS/2 mouse configurations in the Mandrake install as I luckily had
read here of others having this problem and thought I would do my self a
favor by skipping over my desire for two buttons and a wheel.
I have thought of doing just as you suggest. But what I really want to do is
backup some of my win98 stuff onto my linux partition, reload windows and
then be able to restore the backed up stuff. I have a tape backup that is
No. You can boot and type "linux init 1" at the lilo boot prompt. You will
be dropped in a single-user shell without being asked any password. From
there, you can change root's password.
But I don't think it will work with a too high level security (can someone
confirm?)
If it still doesn't work, you'll have to boot with a cd that a has a live
system on it (like the slack or suse CD), or use a tiny distribution that
hold on a few floppoes (sorry I can't remember the name).
Yes, I had this problem too. Quite frustrating. I did the thing that all
It looks to me like the glib-devel package isn't installed.
[newbie] HELP - can't log in as user....
2000-05-05 Thread Kirk McElhearn
All of a sudden, my user account won't let me log in.  I have two
accounts set up - kirk and root.  Neither of them has a password.  When I
try to log in with kirk, the screen changes color, goes blank, then comes
back to the login screen.  When I try to create a new user, and log in,
the same thing happens.
For some reason, today, everything is screwed up - I couldn't mount CD-
roms, I couldn't open DrakConf, it seems like something big has messed up.
Any thoughts?
If I do a reinstall, will it overwrite all my settings?  I have
installed, for ex, netatalk - will it erase that?
RE: [newbie] Virus
2000-05-05 Thread David Ramsey
>From the reading that I have done, there is only one virus that has ever
been detected and documented to hit Linux. The file system of Linux makes
it just about impossible for a virus to function. Example is the I Love you
virus that went out yesterday. I mainly targeted MS OS, but it would modify
any JPG and various other files it could find. It really trashed our shared
Novell file system through the clients, but the Linux boxes was not
effected.
Does anybody know about virus for Linux.  I thoght that nobody make virus
for
linux, but now I'm impressed of the fact that MCaffe make an antivirus for
Linux. I hope that now that exists a linux antivirus anybody will make
virus
for it.
RE: [newbie] GCC...where are you???
2000-05-05 Thread David Ramsey
Went through last night and reinstalled Linux using different hard drive
set just to see if it would clear up the gcc problem. Used the custom
option of Developement in expert mode. Selected every darn thing that could
apply to what I wanted, and installed it. Ran the installation and the
compiler worked just fine. Checked the environment variables. There is no
real difference there. The result, if you install with expert mode you can
pretty much select any package you want. And then it seems that it will
make all the required entries in the environment and required symbolic
links. Otherwise, if you just install the RPM file, it does not.
I am going to grab all of the files that are dependant of the gcc rpm and
do
an install today.  HOPEFULLY this will work, and I will not have to go
through the whole messy upgrade process.  I would not have so much trouble
with this if I would have known sooner, but we already rebuilt the server
and got all of our programs running on it.  It would be a GREAT deal of
trouble to reinstall the server from scratch...way too much extra work
todo.
I will try and keep the comm lines open here, and let some of you know how
this goes, or if I find another way to successfully install gcc.
Question for ya Dave:  After you installed the gcc rpm did you query it to
see if it really installed or not?  I would like to know if it comes back
as
installed or still "missing".
Let me know what you find out..
Frustrated tech still..
A. That might explain my problem! I have been trying to compile Mat
Trace Route. When I do so, the configure script checks for the compiler
GCC, and comes back and says it can't make executable file. I even went to
the installation CDROM and reinstalled all the GCC RPM files, and get the
same error. Suspect doing it this way does not set the right environment.
Any idea how to get around this without re-installing from scratch?
Welcome to one of the 'quirks' of Mandrake 7.0 ( I presume that is what
flavor you have).  If I recall, if you don't select 'Custom', and
'Development' during install, or otherwise explicitly specify to install
the compiler, you don't get it.  If you are downloading an *.rpm file,
you should be able to install that no problem, assuming you have all the
dependencies (required files/libraries,etc.) satisfied.
It does not exist under Linux.
What you need for Linux is ncurses.h read your docs, because the functions are
not exactly the same as in dos
It's also my case, i have solved it executing the program knetstart and
selecting the option Dhcp. When one make that, he will find two problems. The
Knetstart will stay sending packages to the server and we have to kill this
process with: killall -9 knetstart. The second problem is that we can't start
the network at boot, since this program is a KDE program. I have try to
configure the network with Drakconf i had not success, and i don't understand
why knetstart configures the eth0 without problems and Drakconf is unable to
make it.
