[newbie] Netscape launch for Pine users
Hi all, I have come up with a really simple solution for something that bugged me since some time. When in Pine I hit a URL that I want to see, default behaviour is that Pine runs Netscape. Okay by itself, but as long as netscape is running, Pine is occupied in watching when it is finished. So while waiting for a page to load I could not read mail. I came up with this little workaround: #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/netscape-navigator -no-about-splash $1 I call it 'netrun', and stuck it in my ~/bin directory (which is in my personal path of course). Then I told Pine to run ~/bin/netrun as the browser. And voila, no more problem, netrun launches netscape with the URL, and then returns to Pine, fast as a flash :) Perhaps someone now laughs and will tell me there's a much easier solution, but I am glad I got this one going! Feel free to use it if you like it. (Don't forget to chmod +x it.) Umno one ever said apps like Netscape are crash free. They're refering to the Operating System. And to tell you the truth you yourself said it, that when something crashes bad where you might have to reboot the system under windows, under Linux all that's needed is to exit and reenter x-windows. If you ask me that a HELL of a lot easier and more convenient then rebooting the entire system when something dies. And I've been running Linux for almost two years now, and while Netscape is 'somewhat' more stable under Linux, (not by much) I don't have the software conflicts in Linux that are present and common in windows. -- Mark ** =/\= No Penguins were harmed | ICQ#27816299 ** _||_ in the making of this | ** =\/= message...| Registered Linux user #182496 On Fri, 25 Aug 2000, Doug wrote: Hugh wrote: And Doug you forgot to mention the pretty blue screens you get And all for free NOT! Once you have a connection, you have to configure the preferences in Netscape so it will recognize your modem. With netscape up click on edit and then in the drop down list Preferences. Thank you - I tried gcc and found I like it a lot. I don't care as much about fancy as about functional, so I am happily set up with vim and gcc now. :) Have you tried lcc? I heard it's similar to gcc but not identical and I wondered what the difference was. I've written your book title down, to go with kernighan and ritchie's _the c programming language_ when i am a bit farther along! Pete Clapham wrote: Kathleen -- I use gcc to program in C. If you want a book that will actually let you learn C, I would recommend the book by Donald (I think) Kochan (the last name is correct). Something we tried *actually* did something positive! I was beginning to worry there! For now, unless you're going to be setting up httpd to server something immediately, you can go into DrakConf (if it actually installed on your machine--I had to install mine manually) and shut off httpd in system services. Until you actually have the ability to set it up, there's no need to sit around waiting for it to start. For pmfirewall... just so that everything is set correctly in its scripts, re-run the install script giving it ppp0 as the external interface, DHCP, autodetect the IP, and shut off any services you probably will not use (most, if not all the defaults are fine here). Then tell it eth0 is the internal interface, that it *will* be masquerading, and to detect that IP range. When it all finished, bring upthe modem, get connected, and run /usr/local/pmfirewall/./pmfirewall restart to check that it's been confgured correctly. You should see the correct IPs for bothe networks. On the windows box... all you need to do in the Network applet in control panel, is edit the settings in network protocols TCP/IP [ethernet adapter]. You want to add your internal IP for that machine. a subnet mask that matches the one used on the NIC for the firewall (hopefully 255.255.255.0-'cause that would correct) and enter the default gateway as the IP of the internal interface of the firewall. For the the DNS entries, add the two DNS IP address found in /etc/resolve.conf on the firewall (or two DNS servers you know will exist on the internet), close everything, possibly restart as you're working in windows, and give it a try. We should be good from here Then it's on to samba. (Oh god!) :-) --Greg Success!!! I took out my servername and address in /etc/hosts and am now able to connect to internet. /sbin/ifup ppp0 dials modem and connects /sbin/ifconfig shows eth0.,lo,ppp0 with IP addressess on ppp0 it shows the address the ISP gives me upon connection. What is command to disconnect? Kppp will also work. On Boot though "http" fails and has to set the servername. Bootup takes forever. I will now enable network on box2 and try to figure out how to mount. What do I do next? Also, check /etc/hosts to make sure you only 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain as the entry...no other IPs until we can figure out why there's this new conflict. Um... yes, if you configure ppp0 to start at boot, it wiil attempt to dial up unless you have demand dial enabled...let's not get into that yet, though. Disable the boot-time on ppp0 for now. You should be able to leave pmfirewall the way you have it. After boot, type /sbin/ifup ppp0and see what happens. I negotiation occurs, wait a few seconds and then type /sbinf/ifconfig and see if ppp0 is listed. if it is, check the IP info. If you get assigned a 192.168.x.x number then we have to use a different range on the NIC (10.x.x.x maybe). Geez...it's 1am--I have to get to sleep now... Re: [newbie] resolv.conf goes to different ip as soon as ppp0 starts
OK, for starters, DHCP (and you're probably using this based on your indication of using the ppp0 interface) will dynamically assign both a host IP address and DNS IP addresses to your machine as soon as negotiation of your ISP account is complete. If you are manually configuring DNS addresses that you have gotten from a different ISP, then *yes* they will change. Nothing is "up" with it--it's supposed to be that way. Don't worry about that, it seems it's the least of your worries. Second, your config seems all screwed up. I'm not sure why you want to *stop* ipchains from starting, unless you believe it's causing some particular problem that you haven't explained. Actually ipchains would be a good thing to have enabled on an internet connected machine because you can configure it to stop hackers from breaking in. In order to troubleshoot your setup, please include as detailed a description of how you set up your interface(s) as possible. From what you've written here, there's nothing we can do. --Greg resolv.conf goes to different ip as soon as ppp0 starts? what is up with that? these numbers change as soon as ppp0 starts and I open resolv.conf to see them. any ideas? and so far I have not been sucessfull at keeping ipchains from starting, and do not get past the error messages unless I use the "I" option when mandrake goes into interactive phaase. __ Vous avez un site perso ? 2 millions de francs à gagner sur i(france) ! I'll assume you did this on "Box1" You have the printer on Box2, which is connecting to the internet, and running linux. What are you running now on Box1? If it's windows, then we'll need to set up samba. If it's linux all-round then I think filesystem mounting will need nfs set up (I'm not too sure about this--I'll look into it) and for printing you'll need the lpd and lpq set up correctly on each machine. We can also do this with samba if we need to. Samba can be either easy, or complicated, depending on what level of configuration you want. Also, if we edit the samba.conf file manually, it'll take a bit of tweaking. I'll need to brush up on both before we tackle this one. For the printer, you should be able to go into DrakConf, and add the printer, local for Box2, and set the lpq on Box1 (line printer queue) to Box2's lpq. I'm not well versed in linux printing--cause I haven't tried it yet...and when I do, it'll be a far different story for me since my two printers are on an HP JetDirect printserver...not connected to a computer. I'll brish up and get back to you. --Greg Hi Greg, Things seems to be working. I.m not using DHCP and not enabled in pmfirewall. Is that all right? Box 2- I've also have linux on it, and want to access it thru linux. Box2 also has the printer attached to it that I want to use. I got Box2 where it can access the internet and network. I had to disable serials ports in the Bios to get both PCI Devices to work (NIC and Modem). I installed pmfirewall on box2 with same options I used on Box 1. Now--- I want to access Box2 printer and be able to mount both computers from each other. When I try to print from Box 1 to box2 printer I get "unable to get offical name for local machine Intel.localdomain" Names Box1= Intel.localdomain Box2=Athlon.localdomain As always any help would be greatly appreciated. [newbie] new install
Macmilan Software, Hi I just purchased and registered Linux 7.1 Mandrake Complete today 8-26-2000. I am putting it on a custom built system. The problem I am having is that when it see the CD-ROM and starts copying files the menu never comes up as stated in the insulation and user guide on pg.49. The screen that comes up is blue but with no menus and a red line on the left side. It looks like the one on page 49 but with no options to select. The hard drive is blank with no partition and is going to be the only Operation System on the drive. At one time the drive had win95 on it but I used fdisk to delete the partitions. Tried to use Partitions magic but looks like its designed if using dual boot system with windows.I used a bootable floppy for windows 95 and CD-ROM drivers to DIR the CD-ROM. I am thinking its my video card that is causing the problems. Please help!! Re: [newbie] Kppp and Networking
Hi, Let me clarify . Both boxes have win98/linux on them. I have dual booting setup for Both. Box 1 is the one I have been working with all along. It has External Modem on serial port 2. It seems to be working. I ran into problems on Box2 getting both Nic and Modem to work at same time. Sound familar. I disabled serial ports in cmos to free up some IRQ's. It seems to have worked. Greg what I'm wanting to do is be able to print from Box1 to Box2 Attached printer. I can acces the internet from either computer right now. I not concerned with sharing an Internet connection at this time.I tried to setup printin from box1 but it failed. I don't remember now, but It said something about servername? I also could use some advice on how to mount each computer where I can share files between the two computers. I'm not very clear on this. I would also like "later" to learn how to setup samba to go from linux to windows, but for now I want linux to linux. I hope this clarifies what I,m trying ---Sorry--- Earlier this summer I read some of the howto's but got confused . I going to try this again. Fwd: [newbie] grub Xserver4.0 Xserver3x
Since I got no response, I'm sending this again. I didn't get an "upgrade" option when upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1, and I don't want to spend the time needed to go through this in expert mode if it can be avoided. -Gary- How can I boot with grub into run level 3? How can I change from 4.0 back to Xserver 3.x (I can hardly see what I'm doing!)? My son corrupted Windows 98 forcing a refresh install. This completed but screwed up Grub, making the HDD unbootable for Win or Mandrake. A DOS FDISK / MBR solved that, as it would if it had been Lilo. Since I hadn't had time to play with my LM7.1 upgrade to realize I had a problem with it, and I didn't have many programs installed in my new install of 7.0 (forced to repartition for the upgrade to complete), I installed LM7.0 again, installed RPMs, and redid the upgrade to LM7.1. I chose Xserver4.0 again not realizing the grey and blue horiz lines are not a feature but a bug which makes the screen is nearly illegible. I thought I could change this when I configured my desktop, but it's a bug apparently with my Trident Providia 9865 video card, rather than a feature. How can I change back, especially since the screen is nearly illegible? Yes, Xserver 3.x is on the drive. Thank you for helping me not to have to do this again!-Gary-
[newbie] Domain not Bound?
Hello all, perhaps someone could help with this small problem: I recently made some changes to networking configuration and now when I reboot, start Netscape or use "SU" in X Term. I get a message saying YPBINDProc_DOMAIN: Domain not boundI feel like I have changed back all my previous adjustments but I still get the same Warning. My 'LAN' shows no glitches in performance. Any advice is appreciated. I'm running 7.1(Helium) on a Compaq 7970,700 MHz athlon, 128MB, Server Custom Install. Thanks Jeff begin:vcard n:Morse;Jeffrey x-mozilla-html:TRUE adr:;; version:2.1 email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] note;quoted-printable:Good things come to those who wait :)=0D=0A=0D=0A Linux / Java=0D=0ASeries60 x-mozilla-cpt:;-26112 fn:Jeffrey Morse end:vcard
[newbie] error on boot-up
Dear All, I have been using Linux Mandrake 7 for about 5 weeks now. Everything (almost) was fine until I decided to try a different desktop last night. I have used different ones before without a problem but last night I used Xfce(sp?). After I logged out I shut down X and as usual it started the power down routine. Before it was finished it just stopped somewhere and did not quite make it to the power off part where you manually shut down your machine. I had to push reset to get out of it and to turn off my machine. Today I started Linux. It started as usual and went through the checks, It showed that it was doing a dev/hda3 check forced and said all was OK. Then it came to "remounting root filesystem in read-write mode- OK. There it just froze and would not continue to the Console login. In other words I no longer can get into Linux. Any suggestions? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Marcia
