[newbie-it] StarOffice e CUPS Driver

2000-12-23 Thread Daniele Morabito

come.

Qualche consiglio?
Grazie, Daniele Morabito

[newbie-it] Problema Font

Look for piranah
It is cool clustering software where you can set it up for load
bearing(sharing the load if traffic is high) or high availabillity (one
takes over from the other when it goes off line)
It is configured with your browser and is verey cool.
You will need a controller node though.

You misunderstand what the primary and secondary DNS server's jobs are.
Those machines are the traffic cops to tell the world where your various
hosts are (IP address). If the primary DNS server is down, then the
secondary server still tells everybody where your hosts are.

What you're trying to do is get your standby web server (not DNS server)
to take over the role of servicing the http requests. That's possible to
do, and one way is how you described it. There are also tools that can
do it for you automatically, but I'm not readily familiar with them.

Grab a book on TCP/IP and get to know what DNS does. And remember to
keep the concepts of server="computer" and server="program that does a
job" seperated in your mind. For example, you might make your primary
DNS server the same physical box as your standby web server, etc.

a Pioneer DVD-304 drive connected to my Advance Peripherals 2941 U2W

Is there anybody who has an idea why this happens?

Sorry. But I caught the last end of this this thread. You can download a
free copy of Code Crusader
from the following ftp site as an rpm file.

ftp://ftp.newplanetsoftware.com/pub/jcc/Linux-Intel/glibc-2.1/

If you are using Netscape, hold down the shift key and select:
code_crusader-2.1.4-1.i386.rpm

Repeat this with:
ctags-3.3-1.i386.rpm

To install them, log on as root and single-click on each file and they
will install.

Happy Holidays.

this space, you could use the find command to locate them.
Start high, and keep doing it, dropping the size by a couple
meg each time. The syntax would be like this:

find / -size x -print

or to look in your /home directories, use

find /home -size x -print

where "x" is the size of the file in blocks (512-byte
blocks, that is). It would be nice to search for files of a
certain size _and_ modification date, but find can't do
 that. Maybe locate can?

 Subject: [newbie] Disk filling up

  Hi list.

Something strange happened to me today here at work. I

 had received an

attachment from someone. It was an MS Powerpoint file. On

 a lark I decided to

attempt and open the file with Star Office. I was curious,

 so sue me!

Anyway, things didn't go well. X crashed and "something"

 happened that ate up

ALL the remaining available space on my /home partition.

 I've checked and

rechecked and checked again and for the life of me I can't

 find or figure out

what in the world is going on or what is being written to

 that is causeing

this. It's very bizzare. What in the world could have

 happened and what can I

do to regain the space on my HDD? Before this happened the

 partition was only

at 26% used. It is now at 86% and that is after I got rid

 of a bunch of junk

  files that I know I didn't need.

  Thanks in advance,

[newbie] Can't read CD drive after install 7.2

2000-12-23 Thread Bob Paddock

I just installed 7.2 from CDROM, and that all went fine,
reading every thing from the CD set.

However after I reboot the CD drive no longer functions.

I get messages like "Don't have permission" even when I'm
logged in as root. Or some long line about "bad FS, bad
super mount ... on /dev/hdc" error '32'.

As the boot messages scroll by I see /dev/hdc SONY CRX-140E.
So at some level some thing in the system knows a drive is
out there, and it has identified the drive correctly.

It seems like some thing in /etc/fstab is wrong, but I don't
know how to fix it, nothing I've tried has fixed it.

This is a IDE R/W drive, as master, but right now I'm only interested in
getting the system up and running, where Read Only usage
would be fine.

It quite simple really. As root issue this command

chmod 4755 /usr/sbin/pppd

However, make sure you have enabled pppd to be user accessible in Linuxconf.
I would check here first before doing anything else.

Have had a problem with my the floppy on my drive.

Sometimes it won't read new discs that I insert. It doesn't even click and

Is there a way to "refresh"?

Supermount is in control of it normally but I tried the mount command just
in case. Unfortunately the response was "floppy already mounted". When I did
an ls -l on the floppy it reported 0 files.

Any ideas how to get it to refresh and "see" the contents of the new floppy
I put in??

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure, but I think the taper program does that for you. If you
abslutely prefer that everything be .tgz'd or tar-gzipped before being
depositied onto the tape drive I have some bash script that someone from this
list wrote and gave to me that will do that job very nicely and you can grab
all the files from there and place onto your tape drive. Other than that the
taper program should handle all the compression matters for you just fine.

Re: [newbie] Shared IRQ's

2000-12-23 Thread abram

yes, that could be your problem. SBLive cards typically share IRQ's
well but 3dfx cards and linux do not. There are a few ways for you to
fix this confilict:

1. Some BIOS will allow you to change IRQ's on a slot by slot basis so
you could simply assign a free irq to one of the devices. I'd change
the SBLive I think.

2. Move one of the cards to a different slot. Be aware that typically
AGP slots share irq's with the first PCI slot below them and that last
PCI slots typically share with USB controllers.

Good Luck!

[newbie] NVidia on 7.2

2000-12-23 Thread Greg

Having a problem trying to install the NVidia drivers on MDK 7.2. Was
following the instructions on the user org website. Noticed it was not
included to run "ldconfig" after renaming the lib files.

Anyways, the sys is as follows:

Asus V7100 GeForce2 MX 32M AGP video card
Abit K7T-Raid motherboard with 256M PC133 RAM
Hard drive is an IBM Deskstar Ultra ATA100.

No parms had to be passed to do the NFS install ... went on no problem.

Okay when I issue "make SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include" to install
the NVidia's driver I'm getting errors about insmod NVdriver failing
agpgart.o ... also mentions unsupported VIA Chipset. I know the chipset
is supported with 4.0.1.

Should I try recompiling the kernel and enabling the /dev/agpart
character device?

With Mandrake 7 when I try to print a specific file with the lpr command I get the

Yet the installed printer - a HP Laserjet 4L - prints just fine within WordPerfect.

And the command # printtool reveals that that printer is operating at lp0.

Is there some further configuration I have to do to get the lpr command to work?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'll try to tell you what i did, but unfortunatly I am
away from my computer (and install notes) till Jan3!
And yes, I have 3d accell working- man quake 3 is
 cool!

I had to mix and match instructions from s many
sources. I have the Viper V770 using the TNT2 -so I
presume the install will be the same for the other
drivers. You need the nvidia kernel 0.9-5 and glx
tarballs - dont get the rpms.
gunzip and untar them in a temp directory.
go to the Nvidia kernel directory and run:
 make SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include
Now you have to remove all of the traces of libGL:
 cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions
 mv libGLcore.a libGLcore.a.mesa
 mv libglx.a libglx.a.mesa
 cd /usr/X11R6/lib
 mv libGL.so libGL.so.mesa
 mv libGL.so.1 libGL.so.1.mesa
 mv libGL.so.1.0 libGL.so.1.0.mesa
 mv libGL.so.1.2.0 libGL.so.1.2.0.mesa
I can't remember nor find the help files I used, but
search your computer for other libGL files.
next go to the Nvidia glx directory and run: make
Then goto /etc/X11/ and edit the XF86Config-4 file
(not the XF86Config file) and change the entry Driver
"nv" to Driver "nvidia", I think it is in the screen
section. Also add the line Load "glx" to the Module
 section.
This last part seems to be a problem with M7.2 - you
 have to
 cd /etc/X11
 rm X
 ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X
so that you are now using the right server.
Finally, if X locks up when you load it you need to
 add
the line that removes AGP support in you config file -
I forgot what it is, but it should be listed on the
 Nvidia help file.
 After that, quake should run!
 check out

 Later!

[newbie] Power down TFT screen

Hallo!

I've got a problem with the TFT screen of my laptop. It powers down
after 2 minutes of inactivity (right) but a bit later the screen "powers
on" without showing anything (i just see it's on), and if i touch any
key it powers down and it doesn't work any more.

The only thing i can do is to go into a console (CTRL+ALT+Fx), log in as

And of course all the programs that were running are shut down in a
wrong way.

Any idea? The laptop's made is "Ahead" (Notebook Computer Model 3220.

There's a program on your system that will help you backup files from your
system to the tape drive. It's called Taper. If your tape drive is the

taper -T st0

Once you issue the command in a terminal window the program starts, finds
your device and then you can configure everything else from there get your

[newbie] More Alsa and the Ac97

2000-12-23 Thread Traci Collins

Hi! I read the thread on Alsa and AC97 with interest. I also have one
of the Athlon systems with the Via 82C686A sound chipsets. As I
understand it, this chip is not supported by the OSS drivers
installed as part of Mandrake 7.2 but it is supported by the Alsa
drivers. Based on the advice from the thread I was able to remove the
existing sound modules and modprobe the appropriate Alsa modules
unfortunately I have some device problems. The Alsa Player will play
wav sounds now but none of the other sound programs such as Xmms will
work. None of the graphical mixers will work either.

I am not that far into a fresh install so I am willing to go either
way. I need to figure out how to get a fresh Mandrake 7.2
installation to install the Alsa drivers appropriately to begin with,
or I need to figure out how to move ahead and get the rest of the
devices using the Alsa driver and devices. Is there someone out there
who would be willing to point me in the right direction to do one or
the other of these tasks? Thanks.
