[newbie-it] StarOffice e CUPS Driver
Qualche consiglio? Grazie, Daniele Morabito

When I disconnect my Primary Server from service- I want the Secondary server to automatically take over providing the websites I am Hosting. My question is: Does MY DNS Info at the Open SRS Database tell the world to look at my Primary IP and if it is "down" will traffic automatically look for my Secondary IP? You misunderstand what the primary and secondary DNS server's jobs are. Those machines are the traffic cops to tell the world where your various hosts are (IP address). If the primary DNS server is down, then the secondary server still tells everybody where your hosts are. What you're trying to do is get your standby web server (not DNS server) to take over the role of servicing the http requests. That's possible to do, and one way is how you described it. There are also tools that can do it for you automatically, but I'm not readily familiar with them. Grab a book on TCP/IP and get to know what DNS does. And remember to keep the concepts of server="computer" and server="program that does a job" seperated in your mind. For example, you might make your primary DNS server the same physical box as your standby web server, etc.

Mr. Sprenger That has happened to me but not with the Mandrake install cd but with my bootcd I made (yeah...I wasted one ;-)...literally it didn't work). Hmm...I don't know how to fix it or I probably wouldn't have thrown my cd I made away. Mr. Smith Hi *!*@*, I'm trying to install 7.2 on my machine. I got an 800MHz Thunderbird on an ABit KT7-RAID. I have disaibled all IDE controllers on the board. There is an IBM DDRS 9 GB SCSI drive and a Pioneer DVD-304 drive connected to my Advance Peripherals 2941 U2W SCSI Controller. After a lot of problems I managed to boot from my 7.2 Installtion CD. After I have pressed return to install I only get a black screen mit a blinking cursor in the top left corner. that's all. Is there anybody who has an idea why this happens? Cheers, merry x-mas and a happy new year! Martin -- cYA!

Re: [newbie] scsi tape drive...
I'm not sure, but I think the taper program does that for you. If you abslutely prefer that everything be .tgz'd or tar-gzipped before being depositied onto the tape drive I have some bash script that someone from this list wrote and gave to me that will do that job very nicely and you can grab all the files from there and place onto your tape drive. Other than that the taper program should handle all the compression matters for you just fine. Mark On Saturday 23 December 2000 15:42, you wrote: Thanks, now I can use the drive! [newbie] Where did all my bash commands go?
I changed the PS1 for my bash promt. I put it in the .bashrc file in my home dir. After I did that it seems like some of the bash commands got lost. I am trying to compile a program and make and all its descendants come up with "command not found". The proggie I'm trying to compile was a tarball that I opened and it has a "makefile" in it. I've compiled quite a few programs before, but never had this problem before. Did I somehow hose my shell? I tried to fix it by copying virgin .bash* files from one of my other user accounts. It brought back the default PS1 promt. But the missing commands are still not there.
Re: [newbie] Shared IRQ's
yes, that could be your problem. SBLive cards typically share IRQ's well but 3dfx cards and linux do not. There are a few ways for you to fix this confilict: 1. Some BIOS will allow you to change IRQ's on a slot by slot basis so you could simply assign a free irq to one of the devices. I'd change the SBLive I think. 2. Move one of the cards to a different slot. Be aware that typically AGP slots share irq's with the first PCI slot below them and that last PCI slots typically share with USB controllers. Good Luck! This last part seems to be a problem with M7.2 - you have to cd /etc/X11 rm X ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X so that you are now using the right server. Finally, if X locks up when you load it you need to add the line that removes AGP support in you config file - I forgot what it is, but it should be listed on the Nvidia help file. After that, quake should run! check out http://members.home.net/linuxfrog/nvidia.html Later! --- Jamie Kerwick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What did you do to get the nvidia drivers working, I haven't for the life of me been able to get them to work. [newbie] Power down TFT screen
Hallo! I've got a problem with the TFT screen of my laptop. It powers down after 2 minutes of inactivity (right) but a bit later the screen "powers on" without showing anything (i just see it's on), and if i touch any key it powers down and it doesn't work any more. The only thing i can do is to go into a console (CTRL+ALT+Fx), log in as root, and, using "top" kill "X" and restart again. And of course all the programs that were running are shut down in a wrong way. Any idea? The laptop's made is "Ahead" (Notebook Computer Model 3220. Made in Taiwan). -- Joan Tur. [newbie] Printer print
Anyone got any idea how to adjust the print size in Linux? I had to get a new printer that is compatible with Linux, and I should be happy that it works at all, however - it is printing so tiny that my tired old eyes can hardly see it. Not to mention how unprofessional it looks. The cups settings are limited and I just can't find a setting for it anywhere. Anyone have any ideas? -s
Re: [newbie] RAMDISK ERROR ON MANDRAKE 7.2 INSTALL
At this point guys I would strongly suggest getting the 7.2 CD's from cheapbytes. Re: [newbie] help,please...
There's a program on your system that will help you backup files from your system to the tape drive. It's called Taper. If your tape drive is the only scsi device on your system you would start the program like this. taper -T st0 Once you issue the command in a terminal window the program starts, finds your device and then you can configure everything else from there get your back running. -- Mark ### ## ...it's not a bug, it's a feature ## Registered Linux User # 182496 ## !-- Pine 4.31 -- # On Fri, 22 Dec 2000 [EMAIL PROTECTED] spake passionately saying: Hello,I have a scsi tape drive and was wondering how I can tar and gunzip files to it.I am not sure of the commands or what the drive is considered.I dont see an entry for st0,where should I look? Re: [newbie] after installation
Navigate to run, and type in: jcc Press the Enter key In fact, you can create a desktop link. The application name is: jcc I've been very happy with Code Crusader. You may want to check out the GNU web site for additional info. By the way, clicking on the tar.gz or tar.bz should open or unzip the files. But I caught the last end of this this thread. You can download a free copy of Code Crusader from the following ftp site as an rpm file. ftp://ftp.newplanetsoftware.com/pub/jcc/Linux-Intel/glibc-2.1/ If you are using Netscape, hold down the shift key and select: code_crusader-2.1.4-1.i386.rpm Repeat this with: ctags-3.3-1.i386.rpm To install them, log on as root and single-click on each file and they will install. [newbie] More Alsa and the Ac97
Hi! I read the thread on Alsa and AC97 with interest. I also have one of the Athlon systems with the Via 82C686A sound chipsets. As I understand it, this chip is not supported by the OSS drivers installed as part of Mandrake 7.2 but it is supported by the Alsa drivers. Based on the advice from the thread I was able to remove the existing sound modules and modprobe the appropriate Alsa modules unfortunately I have some device problems. The Alsa Player will play wav sounds now but none of the other sound programs such as Xmms will work. None of the graphical mixers will work either. I am not that far into a fresh install so I am willing to go either way. I need to figure out how to get a fresh Mandrake 7.2 installation to install the Alsa drivers appropriately to begin with, or I need to figure out how to move ahead and get the rest of the devices using the Alsa driver and devices. Is there someone out there who would be willing to point me in the right direction to do one or the other of these tasks? Thanks. Re: [newbie] Shared IRQ's
abram wrote: yes, that could be your problem. SBLive cards typically share IRQ's well but 3dfx cards and linux do not. There are a few ways for you to fix this confilict: I had the exact same problem. what I did, was I disabled usb, and serial ports to free up some IRQ's and it worked fine. and if you want to take a look for yourself: 'cat /proc/pci' without the quotes. Regards, Peter Marks 1. Good Luck!
