C' modo di far funzionare la scheda anche dopo aver reimpostato il bios
come "bios PnP"?

[newbie] Emergency?

2001-02-01 Thread michael

If anyone can tell, the ip from which this comes is different than
usual.
Hence my apparent emergency.
I tried to turn on my main computer , running Mandrake 7.2 with KDE 2.1
Beta2,
earlier tonight...well, alright, several times over the past few hours.

Now I can't get by "Verifying DMI pool data".

The next line begins an unending full screen matrix of {01 01}.
The clock ( I *can* enter setup of BIOS) now reads 01/01 for a date, and
as of an hour or so ago apparently reset to this date.

I initially feared hardware...if it is and someone has seen something
like it please let me know.

Else does anyone have any ideas as to how to get to my hard drives on
the "broken" box?.

Thank you in advance!

[newbie] KDE 2.0 not working

2001-02-01 Thread otto

Hi,

I changed the partitions of my HD and re-installed everything (LM7.2)
formatting every new partition and KDE is crashing continuosly.

WindowMakeris working well.

Let's start with the questions:

Since the first instalation worked fine, I assumed it had something to
do with the different partitions I created, so I tried back with the old
partition scheme but KDE is not working at all.

The Desktop appears normal, only without the different icons it had
before, but once I try any application it takes "minutes" to load and
later disappears.

Is there any "log" were I can check what's going on?

Any hint how to correct this?

Many thanks in advance

Otto

[newbie] HardDrake sound configuration, AWE64 Gold

2001-02-01 Thread David Willey

Hi,
I'm having problems getting sound to work properly.

I have installed everything(almost) from
Mandrake7.2, with an expertinstall. I have an ASUS P2B (original)
with a Sound Blaster AWE 64 Gold. The PNP OS installed setting in the BIOS is
off.
The sb module loads at startup. The mixer indicates
that the sound card is working. When I try to play something with xmms or kmp3,
the application is killed and xmms is leaves a bunch of processes running in the
background.
When I try to run HardDrake to configure the sound
card, the best result I get is a test of the 8 and 16 bit sound and then the
following message:
Error in modprobe call
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/opl3.o init_module:
Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/opl3.o insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/opl3.ofailed
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/misc/opl3.o insmod
midi0 failed

In some cases, I will get a /dev/dsp busy message
and no test sound at all.

I have tried to remove the sb and opl3 modules with
modprobe -r sb, without success.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
David Willey

 Hi again Marcia,

Try http://www.vmware.com/download/ The latest version is
 VMware Workstation 2.03.
It seems that using the Workstation version, one is able to
install any operative system from a given list, and there is also the
Express version which allows to use Windows 95 or 98 only.
Mine is the Workstation version. As Dave wrote in another message,
VMware may compile again some modules if the precompiled modules do not
work with Linux Mandrake kernel. That happened when I installed the
software. I guess that if you did a standar intallation of Linux, all the
software for compiling should be there in your computer and there
shouldn't be any problem. During installation VMware compiled its modules
and several warning messages appeared on the screen, but nothing kept the
 program from installing completely.
 Good luck. Greetings from Mexico.

what cdrom?, some are almost useless, Sony comes to mind

 It installed

I'd rank anything Dell first. Dell only uses the absolute lowest
cost, limited, often substandard, proprietary stuff they can arm-twist

Does anyone think I'll have problems with this Asus board?

nope, other than it won't be compatible with a Dell case/power

Re: [newbie] Problem copying text to Netscape email from text editor

2001-02-01 Thread Dave Sherman

If you are using Ctrl-V to paste, it won't work. You need to use your
middle mouse button (if you only have two mouse buttons, then you should be
able to use them both simultaneously to simulate the middle button) to
paste. This is how X apps that are non-kde and non-gnome generally work.
Also, you can't highlight some text, and then try to paste replacement text
over the highlighted item. In X, highlighted text is *automatically* placed
in the clipboard, so as soon as you highlight new text, it replaces your
previous selection. You need to clear out any text you want to replace,
then paste your new text in the empty space.

RE: [newbie] Modem troubles..

2001-02-01 Thread David Sizemore

I had the same trouble, but with a Win(ugh!)modem that someone had written
drivers for. I first ran the init strings from the terminal, but when it
connected, I got a lot of useless characters that kept me from inputting
username/password. I found that it was hanging up trying to set
non-standard speaker volume commands. I deleted these from the modem
commands page in the KPPP setup, and it connected rather quickly. hope this

Also, you can't highlight some text, and then try to paste replacement text

Re: [newbie] gnapster

2001-02-01 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Yeah, that's the same problem I had when I tried to install from the rpm.
So, here's what you do with that source RPM. It's quite easy...

First log in as Superuser and go to the directory with your source RPM.

Then type in the following commands:

rpm -i gnapster-1.4.2-1mdk.src.rpm

Now we'll make and compile the new gnapster binary RPM:

rpm -bb /usr/src/RPM/SPECS/gnapster.spec

Let's find where it put the new binary RPM:

find /usr/src/RPM/RPMS -name gnapster*.rpm

Last step, installing the RPM:

rpm -U /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/iX86/gnapster-1.4.2-1mdk.iX86.rpm

That should be it!

ok, this is the first time i've ever posted a question, and i'm not very
knowlegdeable with linux at all, so forgive me if i ask questions with
painfully obvious answers. first off i guess i should say that i am using
linux mandrake 7.2 complete. i am trying to learn c programming, so i need
the gcc compliler, the make utility, and a debugger. the book i am reading
"teach yourself c for linux programming in 21 days", reccomends that i use
the ddd debugger. i typed in gcc -v, and make -v in the console to make
sure i had the compiler and make utility installed, which i did, but i can't
find anything on the debugger. i don't know if i have one installed or
what. there is a cd that came with my book that has all the stuff for the
compiler, and make utility and ddd debugger. i was wondering how to install
the debugger off of the cd if anybody could help me with that. i don't
really know how to use the redhat package manager. and secondly, that
leaves me with the question , is my cd rom mounted? i'm not really sure how
to tell if it is or not, and if it isn't, i don't know how to mount it. i
have linux set up ontop of windows 98 with lnx4win. if i put a cd in the cd
rom in windows, and than boot into linux, linux will read the cd that is in.
but if i put a cd in, while already in linux, i get errors, and it won't
read the cd. if anybody could help me out, i would so greatly appreciate
it. i'm sorry this is so long, i don't know if you are supposed to keep
these messages short or not.
 thank you very much,

Re: [newbie] MP3 to .wav?

2001-02-01 Thread Todd Flinders

No, no, no!!!

Your CD players does NOT play .wav!! Your burning
software knows to convert .wav to the proper format!

You need to convert your .mp3 to a .wav so that the
burning software can burn the audio CD. If you tell
your burning software that you are burning a data
disc, then you will get a CD with .wav files. It will
be as any other data file and it will NOT play in your
car stereo (or it will play as static). If you tell
the burning software you are burning an AUDIO disc,
the .wavs will be converted and you will burn TRACKS
that WILL play in your car stereo. Looking at this CD
will reveal that you do NOT have .wavs on this AUDIO
CD.

Anthony,

Check the permissions on /etc/ppp/ip-up.local. The permissions should be
at least 700. Next, check to make sure that pmfirewall is selected in
startup services to start when the system is booted. These are two things
that will keep PMfirewall from operating. You may also want to test and
make sure that it is indeed installed correctly by issuing this command as
root user in a terminal window.

/usr/local/pmfirewall/./pmfirewall restart

If you do indeed have PMfirewall installed correctly then upon issuing
the restart command you should see some output very much like this.

Shutting down PMFirewall: Done!

Starting PMFirewall:Done!

Aaah heavens...thats easy. But before you do it make sure you have a boot
disk before you get rid of the bootloader. (grub)

then load your DOS boot disk into the floppy drive, boot to an A:\ prompt,

fdisk /mbr

Now, boot linux to runlevel 3, by typing this at the LILO prompt.

linux 3

Log in as root user and run setuptool. Type "setuptool" on the command

Maybe this problem is related to my video problems!

You can check two places fairly quickly. You can do su then cd
/etc then cat fstab. Your Swap partition should be listed
there. To see how much and whether it is being used, go to
Applications-Monitoring-System Information. If you click on
Detailed Information then Memory Information, you should see your
swap size and the usage.

I tried to turn on my main computer , running Mandrake 7.2 with KDE 2.1

earlier tonight...well, alright, several times over the past few hours.

  Thank you in advance!

Ok, who cares what format it has to be in, how do I do it? How do I convert
mp3 files to burn to CD so they will play in a normal non-mp3 compatable cd
player?

Sounds like a resolver problem. Try editing:
/etc/resolv.conf

add the lines:
search your isp
nameserver dns#
nameserver dns#

Your isp should provide you with two dns#'s

This will likely solve the problem.

Infact, VA actually hosted an open bar during the exhibition hours (Bless them ;o) ).
IBM hosted an absolutely outrageous party after hours (6-10 pm) with tons of food, top

The ASUS Socket 7 boards seem to have gotten a bit lower on prices

Good Luck, it's as solid and compatable as they come.

Re: [newbie] Scroll wheel not working with Netscape

2001-02-01 Thread Jim Anderson

Hi all, sorry I'm a bit behind on e-mail... I'm having the exact problem
as Andrew. My Intellimouse wheel doesn't work in Netscape 4.75 but does
in Konqueror and other apps. If I take Sridhar's suggestion of running
"imwheel -k" and then go back to Netscape, the mouse wheel works! Go
back to Konqueror, it still works! Switch back to Netscape -- it doesn't
work again!!!

Also, I've noticed that if I run DrakConf: Mouse choice, it always shows
PS/2: Standard. So, I change it to PS/2: Microsoft IntelliMouse. Click
OK and quit DrakConf, then restart it again. Check my Mouse choice
again, and it's set back to "Standard." I'm just curious -- are these
two issues possibly related?

 Hi all,

just fine with Konqueror and Kmail, however.

I also get some interesting reactions when I click the wheel.
( By click, I mean push down on the wheel like it was a third button)
In Kmail, it pastes the last item copied to the clipboard.
In Netscape, when I click the wheel, it does a search for whatever was last
copied to the clipboard. Is this normal?

Yes, it is.

Here is what is listed in my /etc/X11/XF86config

 Section "Pointer"
 Protocol"IMPS/2"
 Device "/dev/mouse"
 ZAxisMapping 4 5

  # ChordMiddle is an option for some 3-button Logitech mice

 #ChordMiddle

 EndSection

I'm running Mandrake 7.2. The mouse is a Logitech cordless wheel mouse.
I've also tried a Microsoft Intellimouse with the same results.

Your /etc/X11/XF86config looks fine. What version of XFree86 do you have? If
it is 3.x than you need to install the imwheel package and then run "imwheel
-k" whenever you start X (I think newer versions of imwheel start
automatically with X). If you have version 4.x then you don't need imwheel.
To have wheel scrolling work in Netscape click in the frame you want to
scroll (if the page has multiple frames) and then use the wheel. Make sure
that Num Lock is off.

 Any input would be appreciated.
