Re: [newbie] reiserFS and RH
I can tell you that on their latest 7.1 install disks it is NOT offered as an option. For the record, I've been using it on some of my systems for over 6 months, and the only problem I've had is, in the event of a crash, if I'm using the NT bootloader on a dual boot system, I have to use the linux boot disk and re-copy the lilo boot record to the NT linux.bat file. If I'm using lilo as the bootloader this is not an issue. I thrash my systems, and Reiser definitely is beyond experimental--in spite of what RH thinks. eryl On Sunday 19 August 2001 17:53, etharp wrote: > > someone told me that ReiserFS was not compatible w/RH. since I have nt > tried RH since RH5 something I had no idea, > Any one know ? [newbie] VIA bug?
I have followed this thread carefully since I have had some minor problems with sound. Xmms and cdplayer work fine. I've updated my BIOS after reading about the VIA problem. Epox 8KTA2 Motherboard, VIA KT133A + VT82C868B, Duron 800, 256 RAM, 20G WD HD WD hardrive (lucky me - I had even special ordered it!), no soundcard, LITEON 1610B CDRW (works fine), LM 8.0. Dmesg excerpt: "via_audio: ignoring drain playback error -11" Before update: This message is repeated 3 times in a row, with three separate occurrences of it. After update: Four occurrences of the message in groupings of 3 repeats. Any idea what this error message means? I cannot find any reference to it. (Btw, my CDRW burns at full speed both CD-R and CD-RW.) This is my second post to the board. If I wish to reply to someone, should I post to them or to the list as I have done here? [newbie] How to upgrade to KDE2.2?
I have seen that KDE2.2 is available on the mirrors now: http://download.sourceforge.net/mirrors/kde/stable/2.2/Mandrake/8.0/i586/ I think I would like to upgrade, but I'm not sure how. There are many rpms in that directory, and I don't know which ones I need to install. I assume that if I install kdebase, but leave the other stuff unchanged, things will break. Is there a way to tell it to upgrade kde to kde2.2 and install everything that kde2.2 requires? Or should I just wait for Mandrake 8.1? Thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I take it I should be able to use fsck (formatted correctly) *after* completing the shutdown. It seemed when I tried it again, using the Rescue option on the install CD to start, that entering fsck produced a no such command (or whatever). RE: [newbie] Network Printer on Win98
This may be a memory issue... Remember that the rasterizer buffers the entire page on the Linux machine first then attempts to send it en-masse to the printer. Some printers drivers deal with this by sending enough code to print a line or two of graphics at a time. Others (such as HPGL & HPPCL) try to send the entire page. If your printer cannot handle the volume of data coming it's way, it will normally stop half way or spit out half printed pages, followed by junk. -JMS -Original Message- From: Guilherme Cirne [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 17, 2001 10:00 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [newbie] Network Printer on Win98 At 13:53 15/08/01 -0400, you wrote: >If you are at least getting smbclient to work, you are almost there! > >Now the problem is how Cups' filters treat the remote winblows printer. > >Cups tries to run thru the Linux/Unix style printer filters which feed >GIMP/GHOSTSCRIPT or some other ratherizer. RE: [newbie] RE: Linux to Netware File Server box connectivity problems.
I've recently dealt with this issue with someone else here. Though Linuxconf seems to correctly set up IPX networking (try running ifconfig after boot up and you'll see it's settings for your ethernet card)... It doesn't seem to autoprobe the network correctly. I find that I have to set up and run MARS-NWE first to "tickle" Linux into dealing with IPX. Once Mars-NWE is running slist continues NOT to work until NCPMOUNT is executed correctly the first time. Thereafter SLIST works fine and displays the local Mars/Netware server as well as any remotes which may be found. I've also found that Netware also fails to see the IPX packets coming from Linux/IPX defining it's frame usage, until Mars and NCPmount are used. Once done everything is normal. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Todd Zashin Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2001 6:00 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] RE: Linux to Netware File Server box connectivity problems. Hi all. I am new to this list and have a nagging question. Please help. I am running Linux Mandrake 8.0 Freq2 kernel 2.4.5-5mdk on a Pentium 200 64meg machine with 8gig HD Trident video card hooked to a vga monitor. Here is what ails my Linux machine. At work, we have a Netware 5.0 FS. I want to be able to mount a folder/directory on my Linux box from my Netware File Server because I have several folders on the File Server that I use throughout my day to day activities. I would like to save files from my Linux box to and from my home folder on the Netware box. So, I went out and installed ncpfs and ipxutils from the 2 cd set. Read the complicated HOWTO. I also made sure to first go out on the web and search on rpmfind (I think) the dependencies needed before I could run these packages. So, I installed those dependencies (one really - I had the rest) before installing the two other packages. Once the packages were installed, I went into Linuxconf and chose to make IPX enabled with auto configure on everything cause I am lazy. :) Then I went to my prompt and typed slist and got Server (0x8847) not found in ncp_open. So, then I typed ipx_configure --auto off (I forgot those two commands at the moment but maybe that is because of my frustration at this point :) Then I typed ipx_interface delall and then ipx_interface add -p eth0 802.2 Same thing/error happened when I typed slist. I thought maybe I need to put the IPX HEX network address of the Netware File Server after 802.2 and when I do I get unrecognizable network address error (something like this). I have also tried the internal network address to no avail also. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG! UGH! I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ipxutils and the ncpfs packages to no avail. I have gone into Linuxconf and switched everything back to the way it was before I started this whole adventure. I have done an ipxdump and I see something on my monitor - not legible but packet traffic is occurring and 802.2 is identified. So, I have tried and tried and tried and now I am turning to you all for help. I have installed ipxutils 2.2.0.18.a-3mdk and ncpfs of the same version. Should I maybe try an older version of these packs? Is my kernel too recent? I searched on Google.com and a lot of people have been complaining about this issue but I do not see solutions. Is there any? Is Mandrake doing anything to respond to this problem? My Netware box is configured with one physical NIC but has two protocols...IPX/SPX and TCP/IP TCP/IP is on EtherII and IPX/SPX is on 802.2 the internal network is currently mapped to the ETHERII device Your help is much appreciated and I am thankful for it. RE: [newbie] WinME slowdown after MDK install
You want to COMPLETELY power off your unit. Some machines leave the motherboard ON to detect key presses and power up events. This leave enough current on, in most devices to retain any temporary setting changes made by Linux to your hardware (to attempt to optimize it) which is probably fouling up WinMe as Denis suggested. Try UNPLUGGING your computer from the power outlet, then pressing the power button on the front. This momentarily attempts to power it up, but without any current present, it merely discharges any capacitors in the system. The hook the cord back in and power it up to windows, using a NORMAL boot. That is boot up WinME as you usually do. I'll bet that the slowness now goes away. You might have to go thru these ebullitions again the next time you boot Linux. -JMS -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Ed Colmar Sent: Friday, August 17, 2001 1:37 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] WinME slowdown after MDK install Not quite sure I follow you here... [newbie] Connection sharing / IP problem
Hi, After rebooting my Mandrake 8.0 server machine, connection sharing no longer works, both from my Windows 2K client, as from my Mandrake 8.0 client (the same machines, different partitions). I'm sure that physically the network works fine (I can do pings from both sides internal to the network, I can do ssh from my client to the server, and I can use VNC-client from my windows machine). However, I cannot ping from the client to an external address (e.g. www.yahoo.com), although the address got resolved correctly. I can ping to the external address from the server (I have an ADSL-connection, masquerading enabled), do some browsing, sending this email, ... I also verified that the ping got over the pppoe connection (ifconfig gave extra transmitted packets). SAMBA isn't working also (it was before rebooting). here's the output of ifconfig: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:7D:8D:83:75 inet addr:10.0.0.10 Bcast:10.0.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:24950 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:27477 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:2 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:18046083 (17.2 Mb) TX bytes:3121121 (2.9 Mb) Interrupt:10 Base address:0x6800 eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:7D:8B:EF:85 inet addr:192.168.0.1 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:244415 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:319230 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:1580 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:19592520 (18.6 Mb) TX bytes:244881341 (233.5 Mb) Interrupt:11 Base address:0x6c00 loLink encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:5661 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:5661 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:1784777 (1.7 Mb) TX bytes:1784777 (1.7 Mb) ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol inet addr:217.136.125.133 P-t-P:217.136.120.1 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1 RX packets:2943 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:3193 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:3 RX bytes:1578773 (1.5 Mb) TX bytes:317183 (309.7 Kb) eth0 connects to my provider (ADSL), eth1 connects to my internal network. However, I did try to set security settings to medium (Mandrake Control Center), and I tried to install the firewall (however, because I gave my CD to someone else, I couldn't install the necessary packages). Another strange thing, is that I can't issue iptables -L, it gives the following error:iptables v1.2.2: can't initialize iptables table `filter': Module is wrong version Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded. Any help is very welcome, since this is a very frustrating situation. Thanks in advance, Pieter

Re: [newbie] Printing from StartOffice?
You need to run 'spadmin' as superuser. I should be located in the same folder as 'soffice'. Now let's go get the your printer's driver. If you're using LM8.0, you need to unzip (gzip -d filename.gz) /usr/share/cups/model/HP/DeskJet_882C-cdj880.ppd.gz into a new folder where 'spadmin' can use your printer driver file. Back to 'spadmin'... Run it from SU console: spadmin& . Once there, select the [Install new driver...] button. Browse to location of printer driver and select it. Back to spadmin; select [Add new printer] button to select printer. Then in the "Installed printers" window, make the new printer Default. Close SPADMIN. Go back to Staroffice and select from menu: files -> printer setup. Verify that the new printer has been selected. That's it!!! From that, resolution and a variety of other things can be adjusted prior to printing. These types of errors are fairly rare (if you shut down correctly) but they in themselves don't seem to be an indicatino of bad hardware. [newbie] kernel blues
"You cannot truly call yourself a man until you have compiled your own kernel"-wooky, in linux-mandrake newbie mailing list. I am obviously a master in the ancient art of kernel compiling. Since most people don't like reading long posts, here are my questions beforehand: 1-what options in kernel .config are necessary to enable reading of fat/vfat partitions? And to Aurora function properly? 2-is 6-7 min a normal time for compiling the bzImage(for a 800Mhz sys)? 3-what are the System Map and config symlinnks in /boot used for? Now read on. I would like to thank everyone in this list, specially Civ, Shidhar and etharp- since now I have a working winmodem in linux. Like etharp so beuatifully called it, this fine piece of computing equipment even runs quicker than in window$. Now I have a complete Linux system running. I had to compile another kernel for it to work, for it seems that the patches in .mkd kernel prevent it from working. My first kernel just didn't boot, or so i thought. Then I figured it out it had something to do with Aurora since I could see the IDE light flashing in my box. It took me some time to change the vga to normal in lilo.conf., but then it went ok. Now it wouldn't read my window$ partitions, even though I am sure I enabled then in the config. After compiling half a dozen kernels with no luck, I decided to take on another strategy: I loaded up mandrake 2.4.3 config and proceeded to take off all the options that I was sure I wouldn't need. Now it worked (almost) fine, though it took some time to compile the modules. I said almost cause the aterm program- a terminal for AfterStep and windowMaker refuses to run saying it cant open a virtual pty. Re: [newbie] segmentation fault on shutdown and then install
Yes, it locked up completely--no keyboard or mouse access. I simply typed fsck (nothing else) when it halted at the first reboot attempt. I didn't record the response, but it was one line and didn't seem to be an "I don't understand you". But it didn't seem to make any difference. As you probably suspect, I got impatiant and reinstalled again. I'm warry of making the change again in /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt as I don't know whether this caused the freeze during operation as well as eliminating the shutdown problem. For now, I'm just selecting "Reboot" (which does the same thing as contr/alt/del does) and then watch the screen and turn off the computer after it reaches the restarting sequence (before anything has started up). This is frustrating, though. Besides for wanting to seperate myself from the Microsoft dependency and feeding the monopoly, and instead wanting to support the open principles of Linux, I also wanted to get the much claimed stability. But I'm having even more crashes, and, unlike Win98, Linux doesn't seem to be able to fix many of them even on rebooting. Also, it would be nice if there was a graphic equivalent of Window's :Safe Mode." Well, I'm not giving up yet. Hi Tom, I've been meaning to thank you for posting this a while ago, and wanted to let you know that I found a quick work around for not placing the gkrellm notification on the panel. I navigated to /home//.kde/Autostart in Konqueror, right clicked and selected create new link to application, named it gkstart, and on the execute tab under command just copied, and pasted your line above ... /usr/bin/kstart --ontop --alldesktops --skiptaskbar /usr/X11R6/bin/gkrellm And, it works like a champ - thank you for the tip. Great answer Dave. I'm wondering if the originator of this question realizes that just because his computer boots up and "locks up" he may still be able to gain access through a different terminal session? He didn't state if he tried changing terminals (Alt-Ctrl-F1 or F2, or F3, etc...). [newbie] Linux-Win -- Where have my backups gone?
Dear friends: This should be a pretty simple question. I think I know the answer but would appreciate an expert's confirmation: I have a dual-boot LM 8.0/Win2000Pro system. My Win2000Pro uses the NTFS File System. That means, of course, that Linux can READ NTFS files on my Win2000 partition but NOT write to them. Unfortunately, I forgot this fact when I decided to copy a bunch of files as a backup from Linux to Win2000. I used Konqueror, my File Manager, to copy these files from their Linux directories to the /mnt/windows partition. Konqueror proceeded to "copy" them. But when I went to /mnt/windows, the Linux directory that I copies and its files were, obviously, not there since Linux cannot write to /mnt.windows. My question: What happened to this directory and files? Since they could not be written to the /mnt/windows partition, did they just vanish into cyberspace thin air? Or was the whole operation essentially cancelled by Konqueror? Just wondering. Thanks so much for your help. [newbie] Bypassing KDE Logon Screen
Hello everyone, I have written about this problem before, but I'm not sure if anyone's found a solution. The problem is that with the Intel 810/815 Chipset, KDE will freeze when logging on. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen no key combination will do anything. Is there a way to bypass this screen and start X from the command prompt? I am using Mandrake Linux 8.0. [newbie] Which UPS ?
I have a secondhand UPS which says Compaq on the front and Made by Deltec on the back, I would like to be able to configure it for unattended power downs, someone suggested powerd but it would not detect my UPS, I downloaded LanSafe from the Compaq website but the number of types of UPS are many and varied (and there I was thinking a UPS was a UPS) and I have no idea how to configure it. Any suggestions as to how to identify which type it really is would be most welcome, BTW it doesn't have anything useful like an FCC number on the outside if anyone knows whether it is on the inside I'll open it up and have a look but I'd rather wait and see what people suggest. -- Poogle Registered Linux user 182657 (added to sig for the benefit of those irritated by it) Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] segmentation fault on shutdown and then install
Well we can bet we are working on different problems with each "reinstall" and you are learing a LOT too. this boot error is from a bad spot in the hard drive that may either have caused the freze or been the cause of the freeze. when you say "linux locked up" you do mean that the mouse and the keyboard had NO operation, and even trying [Ctrl+Alt+f4] did not bring you to a text console? if it does get you to a text console, you could try and run "top" to see what was using all the computer's processes or memory to keep other programs from running. you can run fsk on the drive as root, or the next time you reinstall try using ReiserFS, as it recovers without the ned to run a filesystem checker. FSK (FileSystemchecK) is in some ways like scandisk in windows, in that when you do not shutdown correctly (with out unmounting the hard drives) it wants to check the hard drive for errors. it found one. Is there a Mandrake8.0-specific HOWTO (or other documentation) that shows how to install and set up the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB Modem (for the UK BTOpenworld service)? I seem to be able to follow other instructions (for redHat etc.) that I have found on thw web, but the PPP daemon in Mandrake8.0 does not want to play ball with some of the VPI/VCI ATM pairings in the /etc/ppp/options file. In addition, I have been instructed to put "plugin /usr/lib/pppd/plugins/pppoatm.so" in there too. I know this file does not exist Is anyone able to give step-by-step instructions?
