That's great to hear! You may also want to take a look at gphoto, an app designed specifically for digital cameras. This is my first attemp at installing Mandrake 8.2 on a Powermac G4 AGp. All went well except that the Apple USB Keyborad is not displaying the correct charactors when using xwindows and gome . Re: [newbie] uninstall
With XP, W2K or NT, you can just use the disk manager to do this. Log in to W$ as an administrator, run the disk manager, delete the non-windoze partitions and recreate them as FAT32 or whatever. My memory of XP's menu structures is hazy as I run it as rarely as possible, but I think you'll find what you need under Control Panel | Administrative ... | Disk Manager. Something like that anyway. [newbie] share the DSL & more
Hi All, I'll get str8 to the point here I have a (PC with Win98 on it and will install LM on it too ) + a Notebook that dual boots Win + LM. The notebook has an NIC connected to DSL internet ( no DSL modem just an Rj45 running from the NIC to the wall , with an internal IP 10.x.x.x then connects to the internet through the ISP's router in the building) I want to be able to do the following: 1- I want the notebook to be running Linux all the time, the PC running win ( most of the time ) 2- Connect the PC and the notebook through a LAN, so I can see files both ways ( see win files from linux and vice versa ) . 3- Use the printer from both machines. 4- access the internet from both machines. Now, I have read some articles here and there ( IP masquerading, setting up Linux/Win LANs, SAMBA... ) yet I'm not sure which I need to do first, which I dont need to do at all , and ofcourse after reading a typical HOWTO I ended up more confused than before I read it !!! can anybody who feels like helping, give me an "outline" of what shall I do here ?? Just a guess--possible error in .src package related to where in your tree the GTK package was installed, or possibly the GTK installed soomewhere besides where Sylpheed is looking for it, which might be Mandrake related or might not. I installed 7.1claws from the tarball with no problems whatsoever. I did have to upgrade my GTK+ package (I used cooker, I think) and also had an ispell dependency, if I recall correctly. a "whereis gtk-config" for my sytem returns: gtk-config: /usr/bin/gtk-config /usr/share/man/man1/gtk-config.1.bz2 e. [newbie] gtk-config (previously no subject)
Greetings I am trying to install Sylpheed-0.7.2claws from source. The only dependency I can find for it is for "GTK+ 1.2.6 or higher". I have tried with both GTK+ 1.2.6-1 and 1.2.8-6. Nope -- it's actually a standalone process, which can be turned on via "/etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start" or via webmin. Make sure that you have all openssh packages installed (including openssh-server). Check the /etc/xinetd.d/telnet file to make sure that it is not disabled. Also run "/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd status" to make sure that xinetd is running. 2. It is being blocked by the firewall on the box. Check your firewall config. 3. It is being blocked via hosts.deny . Nope. 110, which is pop3, is for remote access from a client to the mailbox on the server. It has nothing to do with the "delivery" of e-mail. Delivery of e-mail either when it is being sent or *received* is processed through smtp (which is handled, depending on your setup, by postfix, sendmail, qmail or something else). You can and should have 110 closed to the outside world (since it sends in plain text, just like telnet), leaving it open to just your internal network. (See http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/POP2.html as well as http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/SMTP.html ) >You usually can find out the needs of the mail from your ISP (Roadrunner). >If you are configured correctly in your mail program(s), make sure you can >open the ports on your firewall software (Tiny Firewall) for the above >mentioned ports) on an INCOMING ACCEPT and OUTGOING ACCEPT basis. > >The telnet sessions may be blocked from outgoing by your firewall (port 23) >and depending on your destination, could be blocked there as well. > >I recommend that you read the firewall-howto and ethernet-howto so you can >see in clearly defined terms where I am saying to open this port and that >port. > >Best of luck!! > >Steve Weltman >Network Eng >Absolute Networks >Los Angeles, CA >> >> (I'm running 8.1) >> >> Thanks, >> Todd > >_ >Do You Yahoo!? >Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com > > >Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? >Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com > Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You can tell if you look at this command: ps -aef |grep tel* or try telnet to your loopback address (127.0.0.1). IF it's refused, you are not running the telnet server service. If you intend to use telnet, may I suggest using SSH (you need to load the SSH services and this is on the CDs from 8.1 in RPM format). It's more secure and is gaining alot of popularity as a connecting protocol over telnet which isn't secure at all. > > I'm confused as to why I can't use POP3, IMAP, and telnet. Would this have > something to do with my ISP (RoadRunner)? If port 25 is not open in the firewall you can't send mail to another machine (unless you configured your MTA to send with another port and that port is opened instead). If port 110 is not opened, you cannot receive mail, unless you are using another port (defined from the upstream MTA's administrator). You usually can find out the needs of the mail from your ISP (Roadrunner). If you are configured correctly in your mail program(s), make sure you can open the ports on your firewall software (Tiny Firewall) for the above mentioned ports) on an INCOMING ACCEPT and OUTGOING ACCEPT basis. The telnet sessions may be blocked from outgoing by your firewall (port 23) and depending on your destination, could be blocked there as well. I recommend that you read the firewall-howto and ethernet-howto so you can see in clearly defined terms where I am saying to open this port and that port. Best of luck!! [newbie] 3 cheers for Linux
I'm not usually the cheerleader type, but here goes. One of the things that prevented me from making the jump to an all-Linux machine was that I assumed I would have problems downloading pictures from my digital camera to my computer (10 minutes on comp.os.linux.hardware solved that), and I was also worried about finding an application that would allow me to view and manipulate the images easily. I was aware of GIMP, but I could never quite get into the scripting to do batch processing. I just discovered ImageMagick, jhead, and Gallery. With ImageMagick, I can resize (mogrify) an entire folder full of images. I can also create a contact sheet (tiled thumbnails) of the directory. I use Jhead to rename the images according to the date, which is taken from the exif data. I also use jhead to write all the exif data to a text file. Now I can take a folder full of pics, rename them, copy them to a new folder, and resize them using a simple shell script I wrote. Then I zip them up and upload them to my web-based photo gallery run by Gallery 1.2.5. This is way easier than when I was running Windows. Perhaps I could have done the same thing, but I would not have known where to begin. If only I could figure out how to do color adjustments in batch, as my camera gives a slightly reddish cast to images, I would be totally satisfied. [newbie] how to open IMAP port?
I'm trying to set up Squirrelmail so I can have access to my mail via web interface. It requires IMAP, which I believe I have running, but when I try to log in I get an error about contacting the mail server. I had my ports probed and that revealed that POP3 and IMAP are closed. I checked my Tiny firewall config and I have told it that I am running a mail server. I also told it I want to allow telnet, but when trying to telnet I get a connection refused. I'm confused as to why I can't use POP3, IMAP, and telnet. Would this have something to do with my ISP (RoadRunner)? SB Live is well supported by 8.0, so my first inclination is to think that your mixer volume is either muted or turned all the way down. Since you have 8.0, go to the Control Panel>System (it's near the bottom)>KDE System Control>Audio, video and game controllers If your SB Live (EMU 10) shows there, it's not a problem with Mandrake recognizing the card, it will be sound mixer volume control or something else. Re: [newbie] Kernel Decision - Which one?
:) I think you had the right idea, no need to worry too much, it is rather like pool. You can do all of the work you need to do in any command line environment, that is opening up a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+1 or 2 etc), or in a terminal window, like the ones you use in KDE, xterm, aterm, eterm, gterm, or KDE's own konsole. It's really up to you. And as long as you follwow the directions, it doesn't make a difference. Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions. - paul On Sat, 2002-03-02 at 07:58, Wes Gregg wrote: > Hi Paul, > > Thanks for the continued help.
