This is my first attemp at installing Mandrake 8.2 on a Powermac G4 AGp. All
went well except that the Apple USB Keyborad is not displaying the correct
charactors when using xwindows and gome . IE a typed "a"returns a "8 "etc .
I am sure this is a minor config problem but not sure how to tackle it any
suggestions?

With XP, W2K or NT, you can just use the disk manager to do this. Log
in to W$ as an administrator, run the disk manager, delete the
non-windoze partitions and recreate them as FAT32 or whatever. My
memory of XP's menu structures is hazy as I run it as rarely as
possible, but I think you'll find what you need under Control Panel |
Administrative ... | Disk Manager. Something like that anyway.

[newbie] share the DSL & more

2002-03-02 Thread Hanan Shargi

Hi All,

I'll get str8 to the point here

I have a (PC with Win98 on it and will install LM on it too ) + a Notebook
that dual boots Win + LM. The notebook has an NIC connected to DSL internet (
no DSL modem just an Rj45 running from the NIC to the wall , with an internal
IP 10.x.x.x then connects to the internet through the ISP's router in the
building)

I want to be able to do the following:

1- I want the notebook to be running Linux all the time, the PC running win (
most of the time )
2- Connect the PC and the notebook through a LAN, so I can see files both
ways ( see win files from linux and vice versa ) .
3- Use the printer from both machines.
4- access the internet from both machines.

Now, I have read some articles here and there ( IP masquerading, setting up
Linux/Win LANs, SAMBA... ) yet I'm not sure which I need to do first, which I
dont need to do at all , and ofcourse after reading a typical HOWTO I ended up
more confused than before I read it !!!

can anybody who feels like helping, give me an "outline" of what shall I do
here ??
ANY suggestion will be most appreciated.

Not to disagree, but it can be run as standalone or as xinetd process.
It's the installers choice. (so I guess we are both correct)

Just a guess--possible error in .src package related to where in your tree the GTK
package was installed, or possibly the GTK installed soomewhere besides where Sylpheed
is looking for it, which might be Mandrake related or might not. I installed 7.1claws
from the tarball with no problems whatsoever. I did have to upgrade my GTK+ package
(I used cooker, I think) and also had an ispell dependency, if I recall correctly.

a "whereis gtk-config" for my sytem returns:

gtk-config: /usr/bin/gtk-config /usr/share/man/man1/gtk-config.1.bz2

[newbie] gtk-config (previously no subject)

2002-03-02 Thread David

Greetings
I am trying to install Sylpheed-0.7.2claws from source. The only
dependency I can find for it is for "GTK+ 1.2.6 or higher". I have tried
with both GTK+ 1.2.6-1 and 1.2.8-6. Either way I get the same results.
When I run ./configure I get the following error message:

checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.6... no
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
configure: error: Test for GTK failed. See the file 'INSTALL' for help.

I did a "whereis GTK" and ensured the output was in my $PATH. Still
didn't work. A "whereis gtk-config" resulted in nothing. I am stuck.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Nope -- it's actually a standalone process, which can be turned on via
"/etc/rc.d/init.d/sshd start" or via webmin.

Make sure that you have all openssh packages installed (including
openssh-server).

Actually, if it is refused there are several possible problems:

1. It isn't installed. Do an "rpm -qa | grep telnet" and verify that
telnet-server is installed.

2. It isn't being run. Check the /etc/xinetd.d/telnet file to make sure
that it is not disabled. Also run "/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd status" to make
sure that xinetd is running.

2. It is being blocked by the firewall on the box. Check your firewall
config.

3. It is being blocked via hosts.deny . Take a look at /etc/hosts.deny
and /etc/hosts.allow .

The telnet installed by default in Mandrake 8.1 isn't secure, although
there is a package somewhere for stelnet (I think that's the name) -- or a
telnet going through an ssh tunnel. Of course, I would tend to agree that
telnet isn't the most secure way of doing things.

Nope. 110, which is pop3, is for remote access from a client to the
mailbox on the server. It has nothing to do with the "delivery" of e-mail.
Delivery of e-mail either when it is being sent or *received* is processed
through smtp (which is handled, depending on your setup, by postfix,
sendmail, qmail or something else). You can and should have 110 closed to
the outside world (since it sends in plain text, just like telnet), leaving
it open to just your internal network.

(See http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/POP2.html as well as
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/SMTP.html )

[newbie] sending a keystroke to an application

2002-03-02 Thread chuck

This is kind of a weird question but here goes. Is there a way to send
a key to an application from the command line. Here's an example.
While playing a file in xmms (assuming it has focus) if i hit 'c' the
track pauses. Is there a way I could send the 'c' key to xmms from the
command line? I'm looking for a generic solution, not something that is
xmms specific.

TIA,

Heather, try to disable (as root) the devfs (device file-system) in

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=Linux
root=/dev/hda2
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=nomount "
vga=791
read-only

Worked OK for me, when I had the same problem. Remember to run lilo

Usually, you can run 'sndconfig" as root, from a terminal (I've had it told to
me that means NOT from a shell on the KDE desktop either). That usually will
find your card and set it up.

My SB Xgamer Live works great here.

I guess I'm not running telnet. The output from the above command:

root 9 0 0 12:39 ?00:00:00 [kupdated]
root 126 121 0 12:39 tty1100:00:01

00:00:00 kdeinit: kwrited todd 12410 11885 0 14:36 pts/300:00:00
grep tel*

I have openssh installed, but I can't figure out how to start it. I typed
sshd and I get errors:

Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key
Could not load host key: /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key
Disabling protocol version 1. Could not load host key
Disabling protocol version 2. Could not load host key

Is there a way to start the service in Control Center, or with Webmin?

I'm running Postfix and don't have any trouble sending or receiving mail
here. Could Postfix be interfering with something?

Have you looked at the Kpanel>multimedia>sound>aumix and made sure that the
volume and other controls are turned up, or is that what you mean by mixer?.
My 8.1 has a problem with resetting these to 30% or less on reboot or hard
boot. So I have to reset it each time. Also, my SBlive! showed nothing until
I did an "insmod emu10k1" in a control panel and then sndconfig(that was on
one of my installs, it never happened again). HTH

Are you allowing Telnet to run as a service? You can tell if you look at this
command:
ps -aef |grep tel*
or try telnet to your loopback address (127.0.0.1).
IF it's refused, you are not running the telnet server service.
If you intend to use telnet, may I suggest using SSH (you need to load the
SSH services and this is on the CDs from 8.1 in RPM format). It's more
secure and is gaining alot of popularity as a connecting protocol over telnet
which isn't secure at all.

>
> I'm confused as to why I can't use POP3, IMAP, and telnet. Would this have

If port 25 is not open in the firewall you can't send mail to another machine
(unless you configured your MTA to send with another port and that port is
opened instead). If port 110 is not opened, you cannot receive mail, unless
you are using another port (defined from the upstream MTA's administrator).
You usually can find out the needs of the mail from your ISP (Roadrunner).
If you are configured correctly in your mail program(s), make sure you can
open the ports on your firewall software (Tiny Firewall) for the above
mentioned ports) on an INCOMING ACCEPT and OUTGOING ACCEPT basis.

The telnet sessions may be blocked from outgoing by your firewall (port 23)
and depending on your destination, could be blocked there as well.

I recommend that you read the firewall-howto and ethernet-howto so you can
see in clearly defined terms where I am saying to open this port and that
port.

Best of luck!!

[newbie] 3 cheers for Linux

2002-03-02 Thread Todd Slater

I'm not usually the cheerleader type, but here goes.

One of the things that prevented me from making the jump to an all-Linux
machine was that I assumed I would have problems downloading pictures from
my digital camera to my computer (10 minutes on comp.os.linux.hardware
solved that), and I was also worried about finding an application that
would allow me to view and manipulate the images easily. I was aware of
GIMP, but I could never quite get into the scripting to do batch
processing.

I just discovered ImageMagick, jhead, and Gallery. With ImageMagick, I can
resize (mogrify) an entire folder full of images. I can also create a
contact sheet (tiled thumbnails) of the directory. I use Jhead to rename
the images according to the date, which is taken from the exif data. I
also use jhead to write all the exif data to a text file.

Now I can take a folder full of pics, rename them, copy them to a new
folder, and resize them using a simple shell script I wrote. Then I zip
them up and upload them to my web-based photo gallery run by Gallery
1.2.5. This is way easier than when I was running Windows. Perhaps I could
have done the same thing, but I would not have known where to begin.

If only I could figure out how to do color adjustments in batch, as my
camera gives a slightly reddish cast to images, I would be totally
satisfied.

Happy Camper Todd

[newbie] how to open IMAP port?

2002-03-02 Thread Todd Slater

I'm trying to set up Squirrelmail so I can have access to my mail via web
interface. It requires IMAP, which I believe I have running, but when I
try to log in I get an error about contacting the mail server. I had my
ports probed and that revealed that POP3 and IMAP are closed.

I checked my Tiny firewall config and I have told it that I am running a
mail server. I also told it I want to allow telnet, but when trying to
telnet I get a connection refused.

I'm confused as to why I can't use POP3, IMAP, and telnet. Would this have
something to do with my ISP (RoadRunner)?

(I'm running 8.1)

Thanks,
Todd

SB Live is well supported by 8.0, so my first inclination is to think that your mixer
volume is either muted or turned all the way down.

Since you have 8.0, go to the
Control Panel>System (it's near the bottom)>KDE System Control>Audio, video and game
controllers

If your SB Live (EMU 10) shows there, it's not a problem with Mandrake recognizing
the card, it will be sound mixer volume control or something else. If it is not
there, run sndconfig.

:) I think you had the right idea, no need to worry too much, it is
rather like pool.

You can do all of the work you need to do in any command line
environment, that is opening up a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+1 or 2
etc), or in a terminal window, like the ones you use in KDE, xterm,
aterm, eterm, gterm, or KDE's own konsole.

It's really up to you. And as long as you follwow the directions, it
doesn't make a difference.

Paul,

While I'm a bit confused about what you're asking here the above info from
Bastille when you start the firewall is normal and lets you know that things
are working correctly. What exactly are you having trouble with? Its a bit
unclear to me what DrakGW is exactly.

Paul,

it would appear that there's something wrong with the program DevFS. Try
reinstalling the package containing this program and see if it continues to
report this error.

Try looking for a core dump file in either the "/" dir or the /tmp dir.

find / -name core*

  or

find /tmp -name core*

Re: [newbie] Kernel Decision - Which one?

2002-03-02 Thread Derek Jennings

Of course you are correct.
I should have said 'the 8.2 Beta3 kernel'

Before long there will be a 'non-beta 8.2' kernel which can be used
with confidence.

derek

[newbie] ISDN: how to preserve connection after reboot?

2002-03-02 Thread Marco Verheul

Hello,

When I reboot my system I have to take the following steps to be able to
connect to the internet with ISDN:

1. login as root
2. open console
3. isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
4. modprobe hisax ...etc.

I can recall there is a sort of init file where the modprobe statement
has be be inserted, so this automatically happens with startup. Who
knows what to do?

I'm running Mandrake 8.1

Thanks, Marco

Just go to http://plf.zarb.org/ and download kde-moreartwork-liquid.
You will have the new "style" and translucency options.

[newbie] SBLive question

2002-03-02 Thread Heather Reed

Hello all,
I hope you can help with this one :-)) I am very new to linux -
installed Mandrake 8.0 yesterday on a 550mHz athlon system. All has gone
smoothly so far except for audio. The SBLive driver seems to be installed
and is in the hardware list in KDE, but I get no sound, and the mixer window
is empty. It looks like I have to do something else, but am not sure what!
I've trawled through help pages on the web, but I'm not expert at Unix
command line stuff :-)). Please could someone help, or point me to an
'idiots guide' to get my card going?
Many thanks for any and all assistance
Heather
