Re: [newbie-it] Fwd: Piccoli inconvenienti

2002-10-01 Thread Arwan

Dove sbaglio? Succede anche ad
 altri?

righe te le copia... a me nemmeno quelle!

4) Per riuscire a trasferire un testo da kword a
soffice non ho trovato di meglio che effettuare un copia-incolla prima su
kmail, poi da questa ad un editor eppoi finalmente aprire con soffice !!!

Vedi sopra... :-(

6) In molti casi (mails o lettura
di *.doc con SOffice) i tre puntini di sospensione, così come le virgolette
per evidenziare un termine, mi si trasformano in punti interrogativi.

A me capita quando scrivo dialoghi (e, scrivendo racconti, mi capita _troppo_
spesso): testi tipo ciao - disse Marco si trasformano in ciao ? disse
Marco. HELP.

Re: [newbie] no sound in MDK9.0 with ESS1688 ISA card - SOLVED

2002-10-01 Thread Raffaele Belardi

sndconfig worked. Now there is also the /dev/sound directory, and during
the kernel boot I see that module 'sb' is loaded.

Now, could anybody explain what happened? My understanding is that
sndconfig updated /etc/modules.conf, which instructs the kernel to load
and configure the sb module. Can anybody confirm? And who created
/dev/sound?

The board is still not displayed in Mandrake Control Center, but that's
not important as long as I can hear my MP3...

thanks again,

RE: [newbie] screensavers

2002-10-01 Thread falcaraz

You have the possibility to use xscreensaver under KDE. Firs of all you
need xscreensaver installed; if your video card has acceleration (DRI)
enabled you can also install a second file named (sorry I don't remember
the whole name) xscreensaver-GLI or similar (I think is in the second or
third 9.0 cd).

Then go to your home directory and change to the Autostart kde directory
(cd /home/your username/.kde/Autostart); you must create a file in
this directory (touch start-xscreensaver.sh) and the file just need the
next line: xscreensaver -nosplash (you can write this with any text
editor; I like to use midnight commander (mc).

After that you must make executable the file: chmod +x start-xscreensaver.sh

Now remember to dissable the kde screensaver (kde control center) and
restart kde.

To configurate xscreensaver to use as screensaver as you have
installed, with kde runing start a console and write: xscreensaver-demo;
you will be able to select Random Screen Saver and test all the
avalaible screensaver, dissabling those that give you problems. Anyway
you will have more than 50 different :-)

$^@#!$^!!! I had no idea that supermount UNmounted after closing
 the
Konqueror window. I'm running Mdk 9.0. I opened my Zip drive and
 opened an
Openoffice spreadsheet. I had it open for a little while, and
 inadvertently
closed the Konq window showing my Zip drive's directory... didn't
 think
anything of it. Then I went to save my file and OO says it doesn't
 exist! I
thought, Gee, I guess it unmounted automatically. I reopened it,
 and the
 file is now gone. Dammit!

So... how do I make removable media in Mandrake 9.0 under KDE act
 like they do
in say, Redhat? In RH 7.3, you right-click a CD or Zip drive icon
 and select
mount or unmount. Nice and easy and no need to type a mount
 command if a
shell prompt is not open... and apparently safer than Mdk's
 supermount.

It's not there yet - the tabs are in Konqueror version 3.1, which is

There are two other browsers provided - galeon and mozilla - which provide

Thank you all for the answers, I will have no problem with installing

My question is now:

- What's the performance of a 166MHz 32MB machine with MDK8.2?
- Did anyone try to install MDK 9.0 with ONLY 32MB RAM?
- Does the Lexmark 3200 printer work with MDK 8.2/9.0?

You can do this as well (I have 1.4 and 1.1 installed which is required for
my eBanking software - so with the exception of 1.1 to all the other
versions, I have never had any downward compatibility problems (with java
1.2,1.3,1.4)
Just download both versions from sun. You then have to decide which version
you want to use in your PATH environment variable and the other will be
started with the absolute path.

Anyway: in your home dir you have to open .bashrc in an editor and add the
line: export PATH=/my-java-installation-directory/bin:$PATH) then you can
start limewire with:
java -jar /my-path-to-limewire/LimeWire.jar

and my banking software starts with:

[newbie] X problems

2002-10-01 Thread Spyros Tsiolis

Before I proceed, I would like to greet averyone on this list.

I am new to the list, so if I make any mistakes :
a. Bare with me
b. Tell me where I went wrong

Here goes my problem.

I've been having issues with mandrake 8.2 (tried to upgrade from
8.1), so I decided to install my freshly downloaded copy of
linux Mandrake 9.0.

Everything went fine up to the X-window part. Installation went
smoothly and linux asked my resolution for X. I have an Eizo 19
monitor and a Kyro Hercules 4000 with 32Mb of RAM, so the system
thought it would be a good idea to suggest 1240X1024 16-bit colour.
When installation finished I got the above resolution which is not
the best for my eyes, so I tried to tweak the res with the help
of XFdrake but to no avail.

I , now, lost all X-windows and the only thing I did was to change
the boot resolution on /etc/lilo.conf from 1240x1024 to 800x600
(note: that's the vga= part on lilo.conf). I suspect that something
went wrong there and the system will no longer launch X-windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any given docs for XF86-4.x
Looks like it's very different from previous versions of XF86 (say
3.3.6).

Thank you for your time and patience,

Spyros Tsiolis

[newbie] nvidia + mdk9.0

2002-10-01 Thread Sharrea

Hi All
Has anyone tried the nvidia drivers for mdk9.0 from MandrakeClub - the new
ones that just came out yesterday? I can't get them to work but I'm
wondering if its just me.

The docs say the file
/lib/modules/2.4.19-16mdkenterprise/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver must
exist but its not there. Also in /dev there's supposed to be nvidia0,
nvidia1, nvidia2, nvidia3, etc but there was only nvidia0 and nvidiactl.
The error message is
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module!
then something about screens found but no usuable config.

lsmod showed NVdriver was loaded. I did a modprobe on NVdriver and rebooted
several times too.

Simply uninstallling the rpms and changing the XF86Config-4 file back to
nv gave me a working X server again. I tried choosing different monitor
and resolution settings but that didn't help (generally 1024x768 16bit). I
had the nvidia drivers working with 8.1 no problemo.

I'll try the NvAGP option in the morning but right now its late and I'd
better get some shut-eye. Any help/advice much appreciated.

Check to see that you have the kernel-sources installed. They don't install by default and that has been a hangup on using Nvidia drivers in the past. HTH

I think this is a bug, not a feature - 8.2 has no problems with
supermount (8.1 had it disabled by default). I have experienced the
same problem in 9.0, though removing the floppy and reinsterting does
the trick.

So... how do I make removable media in Mandrake 9.0 under KDE act like they do
in say, Redhat? In RH 7.3, you right-click a CD or Zip drive icon and select
mount or unmount. Nice and easy and no need to type a mount command if a
shell prompt is not open... and apparently safer than Mdk's supermount.

You can control the properties of removable media through the Control
Center-Mount Points.

Some motherboards have a jumper that you need to move to short out the last bios settings and then put back on its original position to set the default bios back in place. On mine I jumper pins 2 and 3 to short jp5 and then set back on pins 1 and 2 to reset bios (as an example) Soyo MB. The new hard drive then gets recognized? Just a thought. Dennis M.

I believe so, but you should still be able to enable dma.

 tom# hdparm -t /dev/hdd
 /dev/hdd:
Timing buffered disk reads: read() hit EOF - device too small

(my ide cdrom, no scsi emulation)
  tom# hdparm -t /dev/hdc
 /dev/hdc:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 23.96 seconds = 2.67 MB/sec

  tom# hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc (turn off dma)
 /dev/hdc:
  setting using_dma to 0 (off)
  using_dma=  0 (off)

  tom# hdparm -t /dev/hdc
 /dev/hdc:
  Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 32.68 seconds = 1.96 MB/sec

hdparm doesn't support testing scsi drives (only ide), I suspect
the performance increase with dma enabled is similar for scsi
 emulated drives.

Thanks for the info and running those tests for me. Interesting

Well, I have treasured Voodoo cards for my 3D. I surplus old test
machines with other cards installed and hold the 3dfx. NVIdia drivers
_are_ unstable and have been known to cause filesystem corruption. Yes,
I have tested this, extensively. Only the XFree drivers, which do not
provide 3D accel, seem to work all the time. Incidentally, NVidia
cannot make their drivers open-source because there were others involved
in the development, notably SGI and Microsoft, and NVidia's huge success
is due largely to their special relationship with Microsoft vis-a-vis
the XBox. So they are simply a fiefdom on the edge of empire, and
probably feel at times like a flea on an elephant's back.

With all the prizes awarded for proof-of-concept spyware, how long do
you think binary-only drivers will be trustable? There is money to be
made by including it for the benefit of merchants and their marketing
studies, so what you don't know CAN and WILL hurt you.

Yes, Aureal did say they would make the drivers open-source; however,
they were swept away by the land-mines of ridiculous fashion patents
before they had a chance to. The winners out there aren't the folks
who were technically best; they're the ones who marketed more
aggressively and had a better corps of lawyers and had big friends, and
who were willing to stoop lower in agressive business chicanery. 3dfx
and Nvoidia were once on a par, with maybe a slight techniccal edge to
3dfx, but then along came the XBox, which Nvidia won as the hardware
supplier, and their stock skyrocketed. One of their first acts was to
buy out and shut down 3dfx (whose drivers were open-source).

Well there are linux companies out there who use significant closed
source, and some of them banded together to make United Linux in a bid
to stay alive in a very very bad computing market. I would say that you
can expect to see Debian survive. For everyone else in linux, it is
highly questionable, even for the closed source, per-seat licensing
types, and perhaps especially for them since none of them seem able to
keep a significant share of the user market as opposed to the
business-user market.

But, make no mistake, the issue is open versus closed source. On 5% of
the market and a whole lot less than 5% of the money, linux has made a
world-class Op system that makes Windows look sick. The issue is
keeping the computer you paid for belonging to you, and if you use
closed source that ownership comes into question immediately.

Re: [newbie] The print job that wouldn't die

2002-10-01 Thread Richard Holt

I've found that the best way to kill a print job is the following:
(using an Epson Stylus Color 640)
1. Open Kups (if not installed, try cups)
2. locate the print jobs
3. Kill all Print Jobs
4. *Don't* touch the printer but let it continue while Kups is working.
It will stop usually within a half a page of printing.
Let the software control it.

No other method I've found, short of turning off the printer, rebooting,
and then being offered the opportunity to continue or kill the print job
at startup. Kups is much better, but don't mess with the printer:
Let the software control it.

 http://www.imagemagick.org/www/mogrify.html

 Something like

 mogrify -resize 33%x33% *.jpg

would appear to work. (Of course this will _replace_ all the
existing .jpg files with their smaller mogrifications, so back them
 up first!)

I agree that mogrify works ... I use it all the time. One tip, though
... I have found that mogrify seems to have trouble compressing photos
from my camera (an Olympus 3030z). If I load them into the Gimp first
and save them, then when mogrify resamples them they will be a half to
a tenth (on small images) the size!

This is easier to do than it sounds, providing you have a good bit of
RAM in your computer. From the GIMP, open a bunch of images ... I can
easily open 50 640x480 images (but then I have 1GB of RAM). They will
overlap all over the place on your desktop, but just let 'em finish
loading. Then press CTRL+s to save the active image, and CTRL+w to
close that window. Repeat until done.

Then do your mogrify (see man mogrify) and compare to ones you did
without the step of loading into the GIMP. Maybe the mogrify in 9.0
will make this unnecessary. But it's still a LOT faster than
resampling them all in the GIMP. One day I'll write a Perl-Fu for it
;-)

you can search the lists in google.
for example, if you want to find info on hdparm
on Madrake newbie list, go to google and search like this:
  Mandrake Linux Archives [newbie] hdparm

don't forget to enclose Mandrake Linux Archives in quotes,
this way you avoid a lot of false positives.

[newbie] Partial Internet Access Problem

2002-10-01 Thread Tim Wright

Hi

I'm having problems configuring internet access on a new laptop (via a
built in ethernet card / LAN). Details of my configuration are at the
bottom of the message. Any help gratefully received.

Here's what I can do:

  (from my machine)
telnet to another local machine (inside firewall)
ping a machine outside the firewall
  ftp to a local machine

(from a machine outside the firewall)
open a terminal on my machine via ssh
  ping my machine

Here's what I can't do:

  access the internet (mozilla, konqueror)
ssh/telnet/ftp to machines outside the firewall

The machine is dual boot and everything works under Windows XP with the
same settings as I entered via the connection wizard in the control
centre. I have a static IP, and the DNS server is definitely working OK.
The network monitoring tool reports that my connection is up.

I'm pretty new to linux so if you need any more information then let me
know.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Tim

I've had this same problem sincee 8.x. I finally had to buy a router, and
put that between the cable modem and my PC. I was then able to set my PC
up as a static IP, which worked like a charm. Actually, it also worked
using dhcp...but for me, no router = no cable modem access. I've never
been able to figure out why.

Patrik Marxer wrote:

Hi,

I don't know of an exact equivalent, but there are a lot of useful tools
hidden around a typical Linux system. If you want to work on PDF files
directly, it's tricky - the only tool I know of is pdfopt, which
optimises PDF files. If you want to do clever things with PDF files,
convert them to PostScript files with pdftops, then you can manipulate
them in various ways using programs like psresize, psbook etc. (type
ps then hit the tab key to see what's available). there are also
 alot of downloadable PostScript tools.

If, on the other hand, you are interested in creating PDF documents from
scratch, you're best tool is probably LyX (I know I plug LyX ad nauseam
on this list, but it really is a great program - get into it and you'll
never want to use a conventional word processor again). Either use it
to produce PDF files directly, or output PostScript and use the other
tools to manipulate it.

 1. Can Limewire be installed with JRE 1.4?

 or

 2. Can I install both JRE versions without conflict?

You do not need to install both versions, when it asked for 1.3.1 you can just
use 1.4 instead just make sure you set the path. You dont need both versions.
Lime wire works very well with just 1.4 installed.

Thanks for the links. So far as I can make out, they are doing their
best to write drivers for every Primax scanner but mine. Time to think
about a new model, I guess.

I would be reading up on how the other scanners with models kinda like
your are made to work, and try to figure out what the differences are, and
how you could make your work. the Acer Remark above struck me, since I have
an unsupported Acer Prisa 320 that I followed the directions for the
prisa620, and changed which binary (*.bin) I used (in the windows install
disk and folder) until I found the correct one, from then on I could use
that scanner great, and I paid $40.00 US 2 years ago for that scanner.

Can anyone recommend one? I'm not the world's greatest hacker so ease
of setup is an important consideration.

BINGO!

The Acer scanner that I was referring to is a Prisa 320U and I followed
almost the same path.

Weird...I thought I was the only one.

Yes, unfortunately. Stock standard MDK9.0 install from the CDs but using
the enterprise kernel (for 1024MB RAM).

Re: [newbie] resizing partitions

2002-10-01 Thread dfox

anyone have any advice on how to resize linux partitions?

Well, partition magic might do it, but there are other free tools
that probably support the Linux filesystems better. i.e., ext2resize
(and physically ext2 is the same as ext3, minus the journal), so the
trick would probably be to turn off the journal, run ext2resize, and
then recreate the journals on the new resized partitions.

parted might do it too. I haven't needed to do this yet.

[newbie] iso downloading problems

2002-10-01 Thread walt frampus

I have written about a problem with downloading and using the install disk
for md 9.0. Still having that problem. Right now I am downloading it from
mandrake 8.2. The others have been in windows XP. I am really trying to give
linux a fair chance. 9.0 looks very promising to me. I need to be able to use
my dvd rom tho. I have a AMD k7 duron 1.2 procesor, g-force vid card.
Mandrake 8.2 installed with no problems. Might just have to wait for the
official release to come out. Was going to buy it anyway but wanted to
install it now. I get the opening screen and hit enter and get a black
screen. Have hit f1 and tried the other install methods with no luck. Any
ideas guys?

Walt

Re: [newbie] What do I use to burn a cdi image???

2002-10-01 Thread Joseph Braddock

Assuming you are using Windows (since you sent your email from Outlook), your computer
or cd recorder should have come with some type of cd burning software. If you have
already download the iso images, try double clicking on one of them and see if the cd
burning software starts automatically.
