Re: [newbie-it] Fwd: Piccoli inconvenienti
HELP. -- Arwan

Re: [newbie] no sound in MDK9.0 with ESS1688 ISA card - SOLVED
sndconfig worked. Now there is also the /dev/sound directory, and during the kernel boot I see that module 'sb' is loaded. Now, could anybody explain what happened? My understanding is that sndconfig updated /etc/modules.conf, which instructs the kernel to load and configure the sb module. Can anybody confirm? And who created /dev/sound? The board is still not displayed in Mandrake Control Center, but that's not important as long as I can hear my MP3... thanks again, raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Monday 30 September 2002 03:38 am, Raffaele Belardi wrote: I have an old ISA ESS1688-based sound card. RE: [newbie] screensavers
You have the possibility to use xscreensaver under KDE. Firs of all you need xscreensaver installed; if your video card has acceleration (DRI) enabled you can also install a second file named (sorry I don't remember the whole name) xscreensaver-GLI or similar (I think is in the second or third 9.0 cd). Then go to your home directory and change to the Autostart kde directory (cd /home/your username/.kde/Autostart); you must create a file in this directory (touch start-xscreensaver.sh) and the file just need the next line: xscreensaver -nosplash (you can write this with any text editor; I like to use midnight commander (mc). After that you must make executable the file: chmod +x start-xscreensaver.sh Now remember to dissable the kde screensaver (kde control center) and restart kde. To configurate xscreensaver to use as screensaver as you have installed, with kde runing start a console and write: xscreensaver-demo; you will be able to select Random Screen Saver and test all the avalaible screensaver, dissabling those that give you problems. Anyway you will have more than 50 different :-) Francisco Alcaraz Murcia (Spain) Good - Mensaje Original - Remitente: john drouard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fecha: Martes, Octubre 1, 2002 4:29 am Asunto: [newbie] screensavers Hello. I've been having issues with mandrake 8.2 (tried to upgrade from 8.1), so I decided to install my freshly downloaded copy of linux Mandrake 9.0. Everything went fine up to the X-window part. Installation went smoothly and linux asked my resolution for X. I have an Eizo 19 monitor and a Kyro Hercules 4000 with 32Mb of RAM, so the system thought it would be a good idea to suggest 1240X1024 16-bit colour. When installation finished I got the above resolution which is not the best for my eyes, so I tried to tweak the res with the help of XFdrake but to no avail. I , now, lost all X-windows and the only thing I did was to change the boot resolution on /etc/lilo.conf from 1240x1024 to 800x600 (note: that's the vga= part on lilo.conf). I suspect that something went wrong there and the system will no longer launch X-windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have experienced the same problem in 9.0, though removing the floppy and reinsterting does the trick. So... how do I make removable media in Mandrake 9.0 under KDE act like they do in say, Redhat? In RH 7.3, you right-click a CD or Zip drive icon and select mount or unmount. Nice and easy and no need to type a mount command if a shell prompt is not open... and apparently safer than Mdk's supermount. You can control the properties of removable media through the Control Center-Mount Points. Sir Robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Which developer was it? Have you got an email address or a URL to the report? Civileme, July 10th, 2002 on this list, see below. BTW, the XFree86 nv driver just recently does support 3d/accel. I've got Nvidia drivers and I have as yet seen no anomalies. I would be interested in seeing the developer's report on this or emailing him to get further information on this. LX http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=mandrake-newbiem=102633257532555w=2 Well, I have treasured Voodoo cards for my 3D. I surplus old test machines with other cards installed and hold the 3dfx. NVIdia drivers _are_ unstable and have been known to cause filesystem corruption. Yes, I have tested this, extensively. Only the XFree drivers, which do not provide 3D accel, seem to work all the time. Incidentally, NVidia cannot make their drivers open-source because there were others involved in the development, notably SGI and Microsoft, and NVidia's huge success is due largely to their special relationship with Microsoft vis-a-vis the XBox. So they are simply a fiefdom on the edge of empire, and probably feel at times like a flea on an elephant's back. With all the prizes awarded for proof-of-concept spyware, how long do you think binary-only drivers will be trustable? There is money to be made by including it for the benefit of merchants and their marketing studies, so what you don't know CAN and WILL hurt you. Yes, Aureal did say they would make the drivers open-source; however, they were swept away by the land-mines of ridiculous fashion patents before they had a chance to. The winners out there aren't the folks who were technically best; they're the ones who marketed more aggressively and had a better corps of lawyers and had big friends, and who were willing to stoop lower in agressive business chicanery. 3dfx and Nvoidia were once on a par, with maybe a slight techniccal edge to 3dfx, but then along came the XBox, which Nvidia won as the hardware supplier, and their stock skyrocketed. One of their first acts was to buy out and shut down 3dfx (whose drivers were open-source). Well there are linux companies out there who use significant closed source, and some of them banded together to make United Linux in a bid to stay alive in a very very bad computing market. I would say that you can expect to see Debian survive. For everyone else in linux, it is highly questionable, even for the closed source, per-seat licensing types, and perhaps especially for them since none of them seem able to keep a significant share of the user market as opposed to the business-user market. But, make no mistake, the issue is open versus closed source. On 5% of the market and a whole lot less than 5% of the money, linux has made a world-class Op system that makes Windows look sick. The issue is keeping the computer you paid for belonging to you, and if you use closed source that ownership comes into question immediately. I've found that the best way to kill a print job is the following: (using an Epson Stylus Color 640) 1. Open Kups (if not installed, try cups) 2. locate the print jobs 3. Kill all Print Jobs 4. *Don't* touch the printer but let it continue while Kups is working. It will stop usually within a half a page of printing. Let the software control it. No other method I've found, short of turning off the printer, rebooting, and then being offered the opportunity to continue or kill the print job at startup. [newbie] Mandrake 8.2 on Powerbook G4 installation problems
I tried to look at the archives for this, but, sorry - was a bit lost. So, my question is related to the installation of Mandrake 8.2 on Apple's Powerbook G4 with ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 videocard. At the boot prompt I entered the install-radeon option, and it seems to go through some steps of loading programms etc., without asking anything, up to the point where the graphics sreen should set in, and that one was really bad - practically unusable, so I had to powerdown. (Of course this will _replace_ all the existing .jpg files with their smaller mogrifications, so back them up first!) I agree that mogrify works ... I use it all the time. One tip, though ... I have found that mogrify seems to have trouble compressing photos from my camera (an Olympus 3030z). If I load them into the Gimp first and save them, then when mogrify resamples them they will be a half to a tenth (on small images) the size! This is easier to do than it sounds, providing you have a good bit of RAM in your computer. From the GIMP, open a bunch of images ... I can easily open 50 640x480 images (but then I have 1GB of RAM). They will overlap all over the place on your desktop, but just let 'em finish loading. Then press CTRL+s to save the active image, and CTRL+w to close that window. Repeat until done. Then do your mogrify (see man mogrify) and compare to ones you did without the step of loading into the GIMP. Maybe the mogrify in 9.0 will make this unnecessary. But it's still a LOT faster than resampling them all in the GIMP. Re: [newbie] good tool for pdf
Patrik Marxer wrote: Hi, I am looking for a good tool to work with pdfs, not just the reader, but something like acrobat from adobe. Is there a (preferable gnu) program out there, that can do this? I don't know of an exact equivalent, but there are a lot of useful tools hidden around a typical Linux system. If you want to work on PDF files directly, it's tricky - the only tool I know of is pdfopt, which optimises PDF files. If you want to do clever things with PDF files, convert them to PostScript files with pdftops, then you can manipulate them in various ways using programs like psresize, psbook etc. (type ps then hit the tab key to see what's available). there are also alot of downloadable PostScript tools. If, on the other hand, you are interested in creating PDF documents from scratch, you're best tool is probably LyX (I know I plug LyX ad nauseam on this list, but it really is a great program - get into it and you'll never want to use a conventional word processor again). Either use it to produce PDF files directly, or output PostScript and use the other tools to manipulate it. Sir Robin Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? You do not need to install both versions, when it asked for 1.3.1 you can just use 1.4 instead just make sure you set the path. You dont need both versions. If anyone knows or had experience to install Mandrake 8.2 on Powerbook G4, please, let me know what should I do to get the graphics right. Re: [newbie] resizing partitions
anyone have any advice on how to resize linux partitions? Well, partition magic might do it, but there are other free tools that probably support the Linux filesystems better. i.e., ext2resize (and physically ext2 is the same as ext3, minus the journal), so the trick would probably be to turn off the journal, run ext2resize, and then recreate the journals on the new resized partitions. parted might do it too.
