R: [newbie-it] Problemi con il CDR/RW

2003-01-22 Thread Enrico Piccinini

emulati-scsi.Probabilmente devi modificare lilo.conf con
append=hdd=ide-scsi se

append=. hdd=ide-scsi

aggiungendo:

options ide-cd ignore='hdd'

Purtroppo niente.
problemi?

Grazie ancora a tutti
Enrico

Qualcuno sa qualche cosa in merito?

 Grazie ancora a tutti
 Enrico

2003-01-22 Thread Enrico Teotti
Ciao,

in modo da aggiungere man mano nuove partizioni.

 fare senza rasare linux!

dovresti già trovare ottimi programmi come GCombust e Gnome-Toaster (oltre
all'emotivamente sensibile XCDRoast).

audio in filmati flash) no.

Vale la stessa cosa in Linux giusto?

Certo

Che applicativo posso usare per la conversione?

Da linea di comando puoi usare mpg321

mpg321 -v emiliaparanoica.mp3 -w emiliaparanoica.wav

masterizzare.

Come potete vedere troppo spazio è dato a windows, che ormai uso raramente

Vorrei, diciamo, ribaltare la situazione, cioè ridimensionare ulteriormente
win e lasciare a lui qualcosa come 10 G e tutto il resto darlo a linux...

 ma adesso come fare ???
 Avete consigli...

3^ avviare Disk Drake ( sh: diskdrake ovviamente come root)

Probably 'cause there's no file of that name on the cd's.
Check in the RPMS directory what it's really called (probably
../base/hdlist1.cz for the first) and use that instead.

Did you all know, according to the Lex colmn, in the FT todays date, that,

1) The Linux technology has emerged as a credible alternative for
corporate IT.

2) Sun, HP, and IBM traditionally marketed high margin Unix equipement
and software
that have suffered from Linux growing popularity

3) M$ has not been overly affected by linux.

4) Open source software is unlikely to gain even a foothold in personal
computing
OS so M$ 's monopoly remains impregnable. It's $8.8bn office franchise is
equally
secure.

5) The long term threat to the server business is real.

6) M$ model has been low price high volume model and is for the first time
being undercut on price.

7) M$ can argue that Linux suffers from real security issues that are only
now emerging and that the operating system has a tendency to fragment,
making it difficult to ensure applications reliability .

Weirdest thing is Netscape used to be open any https pages including

unless it's a high-traffic mailserver, there isn't much point - sendmail

[newbie] RPM : Accessing Installed Packages

2003-01-22 Thread Sendak, John
Mandrake 9.0

I have installed packages as root, using the GUI RPM facility i.e. left
click the rpm.
They appear to have installed correctly and I can see them in the list of
installed software i.e. in the alphabetical list of software in the Remove
Software window of the Mandrake Control Centre.
However, when I try to start them using the application toolbar, they are
not there e.g.
* Texmacs is apparently installed under RPM/Applications/Editors, but
does not appear in the list of editors,
* Macaulay2 installs under RPM/Engineering, but Engineering is not
even in the list of applications

Why is this and how do I access the packages ?

my guess is theese were not *MDK*.rpm, and you may have to either add them to
the menu (menudrake) or you can try starting them from the command line (but
it would be a good thing to know where the *.bin file is (as root; locate
Macaulay2) or once you know where they are and that they run, you might
decide to put a icon for it on the desktop (right click an open area of the

Re: [newbie] msec level 4 and samba help

 Howdy list members,

I recently merged our home firewall/router and fileserver into one
computer using mandrake 9.0 (with latest updates). Because I am not
sure if I should use a lower level of msec, I set it to 4 because of the
recommendations given during the install stating that was level to
 choose for a server.

Now we do not have any thing secret or worth hacking into and just
to be safe we are not hiding any plans for weapons of mass destruction
on it either in case GWB is a member here (like yeah right!) so is it
really worth while keeping it on msec level 4? BTW, we are on a cable
connection here 24/7/365 and I am using Firestarter for the firewall
which nmap'ing from the outside shows it is doing it's job.

The problem I am having now, is that samba is installed and is allowing
users into their home directories and allows other M$ clients to see
the other shared folders - just not any of the files in those folders.
The shared files/folders are located in /mnt/shared which shouldn't be a
 problem right?

 The samba log for moms computer shows;
 [2003/01/21 20:30:51, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(599)
   moms (192.168.1.252) Can't change directory to /mnt/shared/southpark
 (Permission denied)

Before merging the two servers together, I had samba configured with
just individual users...since this problem has arised, I have created a
smbusers group and added all users to that section in /etc/group and
changed ownership of all shares except homes to smbusersstill no go

 Just a few mins ago, I found (serious newbie here!) a file;
 /etc/security/fileshare.conf which has one line in it which reads;
 RESTRICT=yes

Does anybody know if having msec level 4 interfers with file sharing
with samba? If so, is it possible to change the above mentioned file to
read RESTRICT=no and also be able to keep msec level 4?

Or should I downgrade to level 3?

Or should I just give up and go out and empty my wallet for uncle Billy
and go back to M$? Smacking me upside the head and flaming welcomed
here to get my senses back!

BTW, with the old setup when the fileserver was its own entity,
filesharing worked like a charm and I ended up reusing all the old smb
conf files...modified for the new network setup...apparently not enough
 yet though.

If I need to I can post any thing to help with this...but I believe it
to be a file owner/permission problems...of which I have tried to fix
via opening up ports 137, 138 and 139 on the firewall (no good) changed
owner ship to smbusers (no go) and even set all shares
 read/write/execute (no go)

TIA for any suggestions or advise
 Steve

A quick look at MandrakeControlCentreSecuritySecurityPermissions shows that
at level 4 the /mnt folder has permissions of 750 root:adm meaning that
ordinary users do not even have the right to read them.

At level 3 /mnt has permissions 755 root:root so they may be read by anyone,
but not written to.

So you can either reduce your level (Personally I run at level 2) or else
select the 'Editable ' dropdown and write your own override to the selected
level.

Another option is to keep your shared files in somewhere they can be accessed
in level 4 like /var

Not all packages will appear in the menu automatically. You could try
using menudrake and do File - Reload system menu. Otherwise it's a
matter of finding and adding. Try rpm -ql and the name of yourpackage to
see where it is.

It can take a few minutes for an application to show up in the menu list. So
be patient.

Sometimes an application may not have a menu entry at all. This is down to the
individual who packaged the RPM.

An RPM made for another distro like RedHat will not show up in a Mandrake
menu. This is because Mandrake uses a different menu system to Red Hat.
(Mandrake uses Debians' system)

Your user may be configured for 'System Menu' in which case all users have the
same menu entries, or you may have an individual customized menu. If you have
an individual menu you will not automatically get new menu items as they are
installed. Configure this with 'menudrake'

Sometimes running 'update-menus' both as a user, and as root will make a
reluctant menu item appear.

If all else fails. Put in your own menu entry with menudrake.

[newbie] Internet Connection Problem (long, sorry!)

2003-01-22 Thread Margot
I'm a very newbie running Mandrake 9 and I can't get it to connect to the
internet.

My ISP is eurobell. I've set up the connection in MCC, and that bit seems to
work OK - it dials, verifies my username and password, and is clocking up a
penny a minute for the connection when I test it - but I can't get any
further than that.

I've tried setting up my details (username, password, server names as
supplied by eurobell), but when I use the various applications to try to
access www, usenet, email accounts I just get error messages - message
wording varies depending on the application, but amounting to host eurobell
unknown.

I've checked the documentation on the machine and printed out several trees
worth, but still can't crack this. The only documentation I found that seems
relevant told me that the host name should be in the /etc/hosts file. This
is what my /etc/hosts file contains:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.50 home

No mention of eurobell in the file. Should I add something here and, if so,
what?

I've been reading this list for a couple of weeks and picked up some useful
tips, but nobody seems to have exactly the same problem as me. Luckily I
still have the old Win 98 machine running so I can access the mailing list -
but it is annoying to have to unplug the modem and keep moving it from one
machine to the other as they are in different rooms!

I tried eurobell's tech support, but their first question was which version
of Windows do you have? and the conversation went downhill from there.

Can anyone help? TIA

Two suggestions. First does this machine have an Ethernet interface? If yes,
and you do not need it for a local network then disable it either in the BIOS
settings, or by simply setting it to not start on boot in the Mandrake
Network configuration.

Second. Did you put your ISPs DNS server IP address into your dial
configuration? I looked them up on the Eurobell site for you. They are
212.24.65.65 and 212.24.65.199

BTW: Eurobell are a typical Microsoft outfit. Their web pages do not work with
Opera or Mozilla. I had to run Internet Explorer under Wine to read their
site. Grrr makes me sick!

Most probably you use kppp for dial-up? If you dont, start using.
Anyway, run kppp, then make (or if you already have it - edit) an account.
See that ip addresses for DNS servers are there. If you dont ask them, beat
eurobell until they tell you :) Should work.

There is disagreement as to whether this is fix or simply a sugar pill,
as is there disagreement even to the existence of the problem/bug which
this option is said overcome.

But should we accept at face value the existence/remedy it is for
rectification of random X lock-ups and not as a causation/prevention of
spontaneous reboots.

Personally I run several AMD systems and I use the mem=nopentium option.
In my case I had suffered the random X lock-ups and these ceased when

If you have 2 or more memory modules, you could try to remove one

It might come to that, Paul, but I'm reluctant as it doesn't happen in any

Having been screwing with the same question a few time just lately (seems in
at least a couple of the boxes around here, the CDrom reader likes the second
disk of the download MUCH better than the second CD of the PowerPack, and
screwing around not reading the directions, I added each cd as a source in

the source, but if you put in the first cd of the power pack and as the
errata page says Insert the Installation CD (CD-ROM #1) and issue the
command urpmi.update cdrom8 as root. it is like sex... but you get to
select what packages you want installed

Error scenario: When using urpmi or rpmdrake, there is an error about package
not found before accessing the CD-ROM. Another possible error message is
Everything already installed.
Why: The installer misconfigured the medium description of Contribution

and if the Powerpack CD is the one in the drive, you get all the new packages
in the proper places (ie; correct CDrom name, when asked to change CDroms) so
you can select or urpmi to your fingers contentent.
either that or boot from the cdrom and updtae packages only, but I think
that way takes forever

then

Then, following the instructions on the mozilla plugins page

$ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Mozilla can see it now.

My first question is: How can I know if java in my PATH ? (In case I want to

Re: [newbie] re: java

2003-01-22 Thread Raffaele Belardi
To check the path(s), type
$ env | grep PATH

or
$ echo $PATH

I don't think java.rpm sets up the path to the executables. You can do
it by hand adding it to your .bashrc. Or, you can create a
/etc/profile.d/local.sh as root, and put those settings there, so they
will be loaded by all the users when they login.

For example, here's my /etc/profile.d/local.sh (but for .bashrc it would
be the same):
-
# Configuration variables added by me

# variables for Forte Java Developement environment
export JDK_HOME=/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0/
PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0/bin

# variable for Mozilla 1.0
export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/local/mozilla
-

The ony advantage I see of having a ~/bin is that its content will not
be deleted (provided /home is in its own partition) when you upgrade the
distribution. But be warned that normally rpm packages will install in a
system directory (i.e. /usr/local or the like) and it will not be easy
to convince them to use ~/bin instead. I abandoned the ~/bin almost
immediately.
Unless, of course, you plan to develop your own stuff. In this case, a
~/bin and the proper path is the way to go.

Here's how I installed j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin.

chmod a+x j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

then
./j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm.bin

and fin'lly
rpm -Uvh j2re-1_4_1_01-linux-i586-rpm

Then, following the instructions on the mozilla plugins page

$ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_01/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so
~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Mozilla can see it now.

My first question is: How can I know if java in my PATH ? (In case I want to
run a program that depends on it)

[cyberhades@localhost cyberhades]$ $PATH
bash:
/usr//bin:/bin:/usr/bin::/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/home/cyberhades/bin:
No such file or directory

Second question: Am I supposed to create a ~/bin directory ? Would there be an
advantage in creating it ?

Thanks in advance.

 That's interesting - I've used PS/2 to serial adapters, but I've never

USB Devices work at only what they need, therefore, it is quite conceivable
that a simple PS2 to USB adapter can do the job. My Logitech Trackman Wheel
is a USB/PS2 mouse. It has a USB plug, and it came with an adapter to plug
into the PS/2 mouse port that I can plug that USB mouse into. However, it's
just an interface change, it doesn't actually provide a USB port, so that
might be what is misleading you.

OK - I've tied it down a bit more. It always happens if I highlight more
than a few lines. Does that suggest anything?

*insert smart-aleck remark*
Well.. you could always only highlight one line at a time. :)

Is anyone who uses SO or OOo willing to take one of the files and try to
open it to see what happens? It doesn't seem to put any of your other
files at risk. You would need to open it, navigate it a bit, copy and
paste to an empty file, and so on, to see if it behaves.

 Anne

I wanna try :o)

both.
Just send the files.

The spontaneous logouts were causing havoc in my file, as every
 backup was
resulting in yet another corrupted file - at least that's what
 it looks like.

I decided to split the file, reasoning that if I took out all
 the info about
ImageMagic use it would halve the size of it :) All went well,
 and SOWriter
was noticeably quicker in response as the file size went down,
 until they
were both near equal size. I was cutting and pasting, so both
 had to be open
at once. Then I hit real trouble. Both halves started behaving
 the same
 way.

I gave up on Open Office last year because it seems so unstable,
 and this is
exactly the same. Now I need to know whether it is the file that is the
problem, or something here in my installation or hardware.

Is anyone who uses SO or OOo willing to take one of the files

Thanks, Rob Damian. It looks as though one of the files is OK and the other
corrupt. But I still can't use the OK one, so I guess it's something on my
machine. I have to find a memory checker now.
