[newbie] pmsuspend2 question

2003-12-04 Thread drew
hi,
i have an hp pavilion xt118.
i am currently running mdk9.2 and am trying to get swsusp to work.
when i try it it goes down ok but reboot is slow and comes back with no
mouse or keyboard. in my searches i have heard that if you use a
seperate swap partition (one that isnt being used for ram) for suspend
it works ok.
i would like to know if this is true and how to do it. i made a new swap
partition and changed the resume=hda() line in the boot section to point
to the new partition but i dont know how to make pmsuspend2 write to
that swap partition because it only wants to write to the original swap
at hda5, not the new one at hda8.
thanks in advance,
drew

[newbie] NVIDIA driver pops up its ugly head

2003-12-04 Thread H.J.Bathoorn
Hello all,

I'm having a ball getting the proprietary nvidia drivers to work on box for a
geforce2 DDR card.

I've already tried every trick in the book and a lot that aren't, frying the
initrd twice in the process and using every kernel I could get my hands on to
boot.
Tried all rpm's available as well the nvidia install scriptnutting:(

I keep on getting the same error in XFree:NVRM: rm_init_adapter failed

The way I read my logs the nvidia gets loaded fine by the kernel but gets
deactivated by XFree when it can't use the glx module with
/dev/nvidia0.:-/

Ah yes, I have commented out the dri line in /etc/security/console.perms and
there's no line pointing to it in XF86Config-4 nor to GLcore, so it isn't
that.

Does this ring any bells or is it a known Mandrake issue I've missed
somewhere?

TIA,
HarM

Interesting, Daniel. Pity it doesn't go on to installing the
upgrades/fixes. Perhaps you didn't know about them, as you are not
subscribed to the lists? KDE is vastly different in the new release,
as it has been split up into several packages, for cleaner code
maintenance - nothing to do with Mandrake, of course. This means
that you have to install some related packages, which may not be
installed by default. Problems such as disappearing kde menus are
cured by the upgrade package.

Carry on, and add your results to the page. You might also like to
look at our TWiki site (see my sig) for helpful information. Good

Since you are using a private domain name (systek.kom), there is no way
the clients find out about the secondary name server unless you
explicitly tell them about it. IOW, you should mention it.

In the case of public domain name, most of the time you register at the
root authority 2 name servers to handle your domain. If the first one
goes down the other enter action.

 Yes I have two
 klocate and kio_locate
You will need to compile klocate yourself, but kio_locate is available in
 contrib.

kio_locate allows you to search by typing
 locate:/string
in the url line of konqueror.
It uses slocate as its backend which means that it will only find files
that have been indexed in the slocate database. The job to do the indexing
runs at 4am each morning, so if you switch your computer off at night you
will need to install anacron to run the job for you in the morning. I have
 a write up here
 http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=7

After you install slocate and kio_locate packages run updatedb as root to
initialise the database for the first time.

 derek

If I can add to my own post.
I appear to have already made an RPM of klocate
I did it for 9.1, but it works on 9.2 as well.
It is available in the download area of my site.

Also the syntax for using kio_locate is :-
locate:/string/

Plus I wanted to emphasise how useful it is for desktop users to install
anacron. Without anacron to run jobs which a server would do in the middle of
the night your logs and your tmp folder will become huge, and lots of
necessary housekeeping will not get done. The downside is that anacron will
cause the hard drive to go berserk 15 minutes after you boot your computer.
Do not panic it isn't broken.

Yes I have two
klocate and kio_locate
You will need to compile klocate yourself, but kio_locate is available in
contrib.

kio_locate allows you to search by typing
locate:/string
in the url line of konqueror.
It uses slocate as its backend which means that it will only find files that
have been indexed in the slocate database. The job to do the indexing runs at
4am each morning, so if you switch your computer off at night you will need
to install anacron to run the job for you in the morning. I have a write up
here
http://www.jennings.homelinux.net/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=7

After you install slocate and kio_locate packages run updatedb as root to
initialise the database for the first time.

[newbie] How to get Wine working?

2003-12-04 Thread Marco Verheul
Hi all,

I installed Wine on my system from the cd (mdk 9.1) and I'm wondering how
to proceed. In the documentation on Wine HQ all sorts of configuration
tools and scripts are mentioned that I just can't find. Can anybody tell
me what to do or where I can find a clear tutorial.

My goal is when all is running to install TopStyle and give it the
ultimate test, so if any of you out there have done this, don't hesitate
to tell me how you did it...

instead of enter, hit f1, and type linux noapic mem=xxxM considering the
instructions about shared video memory and reduce the amount of system memory
based on how much memory you give to the (onboard/shared memory) video card,
so a box with 256 memory installed, and using 16 megs for video would say
'mem=240M' .

Before you download the ISO again, do this,
test iso

cd to directory iso file
md5sum isofilename.iso

5a2d86513cdd302bfe546a5463312dd21f32c isofilename.iso

The 32-digit hex number is a unique hash based on the data in the file.

Then burn to CD in the usual way.

Then ,
test1 burnt cd
=
You can also check the MD5 hash of the resulting CD-ROM.
ls -ls isofilename.iso to find the filesize, in bytes, of the ISO image

Divide that by 2048 to find the number of sectors:(xx)

Put the CD into a drive but don't mount it.

dd if=/dev/(x) bs=2048 count=(xx) | md5sum -

where (x) is your device(eg. hdc, or scd0),
where (xx) is the number of sectors
They should agree. If they do you have good ISO's and CD's

Actually there never was a DRI line in mine. XFdra ke picked that up fine.

I'm beginning to think it's either the card itself or the GLX rpm. For
instance fsv will not run due to missing openGL support. Running it
remotely from a box that's got a rivaTnt card that uses the nv driver, that
same fsv will run fine.
That's a box running 9.2 in an almost mirrored install, kernel et all but
obviously not the nvidia drivers as the riva won't work with those.

Maybe I'll give mdk9.1 a test drive again on this box and see what happens
then. IIRC it worked fine at the time and installed the nvidia drivers out of
the box, or was that 9.0?:-/

I always use cheap CD-R disks Dan. From the last spindle (100 disks,
CDN$38.74 incl GST) all of the 700 MB blanks I have used so far were
between 825 and 913 MB available space. Not bad for generic 700 MB High
Speed (Max 48X) CD-R Media.

BTW; only one coaster but that was a result of PEBCAK. ie.: the loose nut on
the keyboard syndrome.

Just md5sum name of iso image

the resulting string of numbers should identically match whats posted on
 Mandrakes' web site.

When you download the ISOs also download the md5sums.asc file. Then use the
command Ron posted but add a -c flag:

md5sum -c name of md5sums.asc file

to do a check against that official check file. It should check all the
download disks. Do this before burning anything unless you don't have enough
coasters already. g

If you've already done the deed (burnt the disk without checking) put the disk
in your regular read drive and use the following command to check. Assumes
you have mkcd installed:

mkcd --checkmd5 /dev/hdX where X is the drive with the install disk. You'll
have to do that for each disk, the first method is faster, checks all disks,
and wastes less blanks. (-;

Hehehehh, are you getting back at me for criticizing yer reply settings?;D
No, I didn't.
Anyway, this is what I get:
 chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia*
chmod: failed to get attributes of `/dev/nvidia*': No such file or directory
lsmod shows no nvidia module loaded.

Hey, that's funny I don't remember uninstalling the nvidia kernel.
urpmq doesn't show it either..so run nvidia's installer again, I'm
definitely getting old.

Ok, it installs and removes some stale stuff (at least it gives that
impression).lsmod shows nvidia, startx doesn't play ball:(
Can't load the modulesheesh! So lets give it a reboot just be sure...a
shocking mess: no more user/lib/module.deps (or something along that line)
and an unworkable system:(
Luckily I can boot from another partition that has / mirrored so no real
damage except me losing an hour or 2.

What a mess:(

Good luck,
HarM

I tried the upgrade and it hosed kde and the menu system. I then re-did it
as a install so I did not play around to much.

[newbie] Bootdisk editing

2003-12-04 Thread Scott

I have 9.0 x86_64 version that suffers from the same bug that 9.0 32bit did.
The boot images are missing floppy.o... Mandrake does not have a fix out for
it yet. I would like to add that into the .mar file inside network.rdz from
the network.img floppy.
Please step me through on how to properly unpack/repack the .rdz, and
what/where are the tools for editing the .mar file inside the ramdisk image.
I figured out how to mount and unmount ramdisk images. :-D

Thanks!

Re: [newbie] Time display errors

2003-12-04 Thread dfox
Somebody scribbled about [newbie] Time display errors

Coming from a Windows intensive background I mainly use X and I have
noticed that since the upgrade, my system time seems to increment
itself by 2 hours each time I reboot the machine, if I don't
 physically change it each time.

Now that's odd. So would you for instance reboot today, then it would
be 2 hours ahead, reboot the next day, find it 4 hours ahead - or
does it just stay ahead of the regular time zone?

I'll hazard a guess you're running KDE and you're seeing the same
behavior of KDE's clock display I am, but first verify your machine
is showing correct time by typing 'date' in a konsole. That will
display what time Linux thinks it is and that is derived from the
BIOS time (which should be set to UTC, unless you're on a dual boot
system) and a time zone offset settable by Mandrake Control Center or
by editing the timezone files directly.

I have set the local time zone in the clock GUI to be
Africa/Johannesburg and hence my time zone to SAST but my time still
increments. I thought it might be that my hardware clock was said to

There may be two sets of timezone information being displayed - as
others have suggested. My KDE clock right now is +7 hours fast of
PST, and I've seen variations of that - usually it shows up as EST. I
don't reboot often enough, but it could advance the zones as you
describe - I haven't been able to notice.

If I open Mandrake Control Center, choose System/date and time, my
clock in MCC shows the correct time zone. I reset the KDE clock with
right mouse click and Show date and time - and select America/Los
Angeles, and it thinks I'm on the East Coast somewhere (it's 11:44,
presumably PM, according to the KDE clock, but 8:44 pm now in
California). Too bad I don't run this thing at work, I could convince
my boss it's time to go home :).

As far as I can tell, KDE's information for time zones differs from
what Mandrake shows -- in other words, America/Los Angeles from
KDE's splash screen is different from America/Los Angeles in MCC.
But that doesn't really make sense. What I have noticed is that when
I start KDE, the time zone will be correct for some period of time --
and then something - running some application, or just waiting around
-- invariably, the clock gets bumped. And it's only affecting the KDE
clock. Anything else (even KDE applications that display time in a
status message, for instance, Kmail) shows the correct time zone.

Also take note that KDE's clock can show a time zone independently of
what the system shows.

UTC=false
ARC=false
ZONE=America/New_York

Where the America/New_York came from is anybody's guess. I tried

AFAIK it's the default time zone setting.

editing the file and putting Africa/Johannesburg as the Zone but I
did not have any luck with the line as below:

OK but when you edit the file I think you need to rerun init. Many
configuration files are like that - the changes aren't immediately
acted upon.

Assuming you reran init (e.g., by rebooting) does the Unix (Linux)
time zone show as correct?

Re: [newbie] How to get Wine working?

2003-12-04 Thread deedee
Hi Marco,

The Wine on the 9.1 CDs is very old (new releases come out monthly).
Wines compiled for Mandrake can be found at

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=6241

I'm not sure about the status of the November wine. There have been
a number of complaints on the wine users mailing list about the
Mandrake binary. However, I installed the October Mandrake binary
successfully, so I know that one will install properly on a 9.1 system.

I agree with cdrack's advice about using Winesetuptk to configure
it. There is a new Winesetuptk at the site I listed above. One of
its benefits is that it takes advantage of all the new stuff in the
latest Wine releases. I installed it and thought it did a great job
of installing all my media for Wine's use.

Since Wine is alpha software, there is no guarantee that it will run
your application. Winehq maintains a database of applications that have
been tried with Wine (both successfully and unsuccessfully). You might
look there to see if anyone has tried to use TopStyle with Wine.

http://appdb.winehq.com

Also, it is important to remove your current installation of Wine
before installing another one. You can easily do this through the
Mandrake Control Center.

Good luck,
deedee

Hi, for an easy configuration but less optimizated
you can use the WineSetupTk configuration tool, i'm
not shure if it is on the Mdk 9.1 cd's but if not try
to findint on the net. or use the winetools that you
can find at www.winehq.com

 Hi all,

I installed Wine on my system from the cd (mdk 9.1)
 and I'm wondering how
to proceed. In the documentation on Wine HQ all
 sorts of configuration
tools and scripts are mentioned that I just can't
 find. Can anybody tell
me what to do or where I can find a clear tutorial.

My goal is when all is running to install TopStyle
 and give it the
ultimate test, so if any of you out there have done
 this, don't hesitate
to tell me how you did it...
