Apparently Galeon was the source of problem and by removing it, all the
previously malfunctioning clicks are properly working now. I guess i would
not really need Galeon as Konqueror, Mozilla and Mozilla Firebird are doing a
good job all together. I have also installed Opera 7.50 pre-release version.
Font rendering still ugly. I see if i can do some thing about this.

In my Mozilla 1.4 on Mandrake 9.2 you go to Edit menu, Click on Mail
Newsgroups Account Settings, and on the first screen you should see a
box marked Reply-to Address (below the boxes marked 'Your Name' and
'Email Address'). The Reply-to Address box should be empty!

There is probably something similar in Mozilla 1.5 - I haven't upgraded
yet. If you can't find it, let me know off-list and I'll send you some
screenshots of my setup that might help.

 Margot

Well, you seem to have got the Reply-to sorted now - so, back to the
real problem... which I probably can't help with as I've never
 encountered such problems myself!

Although I'm no expert, it sounds as if your Moz installation is
corrupted in some way. How did you install it? Did you use urpmi? I had
various odd problems with previous Moz installations where I didn't use
urpmi - but since I discovered urpmi I've had no problems.

If nobody else has any better suggestions, I suggest you uninstall
Mozilla and then reinstall using urpmi.

Jason, I just did some research to try to clear this up. According to
this: http://support.cox.net/custsup/email/email_info.shtml
Cox does not block incoming port 25, they do however, block outgoing
port 25 just as Earthlink does. You should be able to receive mail at
a dynamic domain but you will not be able to send mail without
configuring the mail server to relay through Cox's mail servers.

If other people are unable to telnet to port 25 on your system, it
might be because you are running a firewall that is dropping the

My K3b system device entry looks like this:

/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/cd (0, 0, 0)

I only have one cd device, which is my burner, so would
that account for the difference?

No ,
It's just that you do not have your writer as a device, mounted, the
/mnt/cdrom section is there for that . The rest adds various controls to
the device, like fonts and access, but I cannot remember what the 0 0 on
the end does.I should know but cannot recall.

I guess that k3b does not actually have to access the device through the
external system mount command, but can aecess it as a device using it's
own built in mount command, I don't really know though. Pure guess. The
k3b programme setup wizard added mine like it is , so I'm guessing quite
a bit. I tend to use xcdroast for most gui writing, and cdrecord on the
command line, but recently I added k3b , and found to my joy if can
packet write, something I have never been able to do before. So that's a
one up for k3b. I find that very usefull when wanting to add bits and
pieces of software programmes to a CD for safe keeping, it doesn't
insist on fixing the entire disc, thus leaving space for aditions.

John

k3b wizard added my entry like it is too. Maybe a difference in
our setup requirements because of hardware/software??

I simple don't know.

Something I have noticed that I would like to enquire about
is the fact that under windows, my cdrw drive seems to be spinning a lot faster while operating. What could account
for that? I have noticed this even when playing a music cd.
The drive is a lot louder. Under Mdk it seems to be running
quieter/slower. Seems like it is working OK under both
however.

I think this is a good sign, it means the device is reading data well,
without having to accellerate the spin speed to do so.

I like k3b too, but haven't tried anything else yet for Mdk. Nero is pretty simple to use under windows.

You ought to do a man cdrecord in a terminal, and see if you can begin
to understand the command line. After all these gui apps are merely a
gui front ends to cdrecord to save you the effort of bothering to learn
the command line. I personally like to know both. I like both. I see
nothing wrong with gui apps, but I also like to know how things work. So
I generally make an effort to learn both. If you ever want help with the
command line , you only have to ask here and plenty of us will help you.

For gui front ends I prefer xcdroast, I like it's eligant logical layout
for a start. Basically you find everything you want to write a disc in
apps withing it by selecting from botton boxes down the lefthand side of
the main window, just follow procedures . Within each step of the way
you have many choices to make, but defaults get you started. Before you
can use xcdroast you must enter setup and get everything entered
correctly, but once done, save and return to main window. You may need
to install xcdroast, it's on your installation discs if you need to find
it. Also, I have found Thomas Neiderwriter the author quite helpful in
running down problems, particularly hardware issues.

There is also Gcombust. I have never had a lot to do with it.

Yes John, I think I may be up to the challenge of attempting to
gain an understanding of the CL method after a bit.

I really don't have much experience of cd recording by
any means, so, I'm not hard and fast on any method. I
have used gui's a bit though. I really like Linux, and
the opportunities it provides for those of different style

Lots of helpful folks like yourself on this list make

[newbie] Toshiba Satellite 1410 internal modem driver

2004-01-16 Thread fanta
Ciao
make: *** no rule to make target 'install'. Stop.
Stessa cosa succede con le versioni 2.7.8, 2.7.9 e 2.7.10 del driver.
Ho installato Mandrake solo da pochi giorni e sono completamente nuova
ai sistemi linux, quindi non esitate a darmi suggerimenti che possono
apparirvi scontati.
Grazie e ciao.

[newbie] Troubleshooting - No Sound

2004-01-16 Thread Brian M. Smith
Hello All,

I am pretty new to Linux, and I am not really sure of the best practices on
troubleshooting hardware problems yet, but I am willing to learn.

I am running Mandrake 9.2 on an IBM ThinkPad T23 laptop, and I am having a
problem getting my sound to work. Mandrake is reporting that I have an
Intel 82801 AC97 Audio Controller, and it is using the i810_audio driver,
but the sound isn't working. I see that there is a way to switch to an ALSA
driver, and I did that and it didn't seem to correct the problem so I am
back ot using the OSS driver. I am trying to find out what type of sound
card IBM says should be in my T23 laptop, and I haven't really found
anything that is all that reliable on their site.

In using the Troubleshooting steps from the Mandrake Control Center it
appears that everything is loaded and setup properly, and am out of ideas.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to go next?

Thanks,
Brian

[4] FOIA Document Covers Palladium Privacy, Unique Identifier Issues
==

EPIC has obtained a document concerning Microsoft Palladium from the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the
Freedom of Information Act. The document, a 32-page presentation that
bears a 2002 copyright mark, was apparently given by Michael Aday, a
senior program manager at Microsoft. Palladium, which is currently
named the Next Generation Secure Computing Base, is one variant of
Trusted Computing, a set of operating system technologies being
developed primarily by Microsoft, AMD, Intel, IBM, and HP. The
technology has profound implications for privacy and for altering the
balance of power among computer users, media companies, and software
programmers.

While Microsoft has attempted to pitch Palladium as a tool for
protecting individuals' privacy, as the presentation makes clear, the
technology could establish an infrastructure of unique user
identification and tracking. A slide on Policy Issues reads in
part: Since the Pd (Palladium) RSA key pair is unique to the
platform, what steps should we take to defend against traffic analysis
of user behavior? The next reads: The Issue: Palladium uses at
least two sets of unique hardware keys . . . Essentially equivalent to
unique machine identifiers.

Trusted Computing does present some opportunity for greater computer
privacy and security. For instance, the technology could improve
encryption key storage, it would provide for a more secure boot
process, and reduce the risk that keyloggers or other devices could
intercept passwords or communications. However, the potential for
control of computer users cannot be underestimated. Generally, it
will reduce user control over the computer, resulting in software
programmers being able to force upgrades, control which applications
are approved to handle media, or even erase pirated content or
applications. Depending on its implementation, the technology could
eliminate online anonymity. It also could serve as the starting point
for ubiquitous Digital Rights Management technologies.

As Professor Ross Anderson has noted, Trusted Computing will be more
trustworthy from the point of view of software vendors and the content
industry, but will be less trustworthy from the point of view of their
owners. In effect, the TCG specification will transfer the ultimate
control of your PC from you to whoever wrote the software it happens
to be running.

In the weeks and months following 9-11, the public accepted many new
incursions into personal privacy. Airline passengers removed their
shoes and stood arms outspread as uniformed officials peered through
their carry-on baggage. The Department of Homeland Security proposed
to color code all passengers based on the likelihood that they might
commit a terrorist act. Banks asked new customers to provide detailed
information that would be promptly transferred to federal
investigators. This year, visitors entering the United States from
other countries are fingerprinted and photographed. And the
biometrics now being obtained from non-U.S. citizens will soon be
required of U.S. citizens.

Whether any of these measures has actually made the country safer is
not an easy question to answer. The government's desire for
information about the public seems matched only by its own excessive
claims of secrecy. But what does seem clear is the willingness of the

 Here we go again.

I tried to get acpi to work, as a battery manager. I set it to
load at startup. I restarted the computer to see if it would
work. I chose Linux in LILO, and behold, a complete blank
screen. No command line, no errors, no anything. Just a blank
screen. So I powered off, and restarted. This time I went into
failsafe. Went fine until I got some error about not being able
to locate [something like DSID]. It then stopped, and was not
active at all. I rebooted again, and tried linux-nonfb. Same as
failsafe. Note: The acpi at startup was the only change I made
 since my last boot.

What am I supposed to do now. I assume something with the boot
 record in windows?

 Thanks in advance,
 Marc

When trying a new kernel parameter it's better to try it on the
CL. Then if it's a success you can set it to load on startup.

To do this (using lilo as an example), at the bootloder screen
press Esc. Then boot with 'linux acpi=on'. Instead of 'linux'
use one the kernel versions displayed by Esc, to get your
current kernel if you've updated kernels.

So what you need to do now is use Esc, but type
'linux acpi=off' (or acpi=ht).

I believe it's similar for grub, but I don't know. I don't use
grub.

Then try 'nobiospnp acpi=off noapic' Both acpi and apic
affect interrupt handling and resources, so you'll need to
experiment to find which is the problem. The need for these
options indicates deficient hardware ( motherboard/bios). For
most system acpi is the problem.

I tried googling for 'lost interrupt' and was amazed how many threads
popped up. A lot of them are concerned with laptops and suspend
issues, so I presume they can be ruled out.

IIRC you have tried 'linux noapic' when booting - if you haven't
already done so, try linux noacpi. No, it's not the same, and at
least one poster believes that to be the solution.

Other solutions offered include

Disabling dma - is this possible at bootup?
Possibility of case cooling problem
Possibility of dubious ribbon cable
http://seclists.org/lists/linux-kernel/2003/Dec/6027.html reports that
a firware fix sorted one problem out.

Do any of these seem to fit Philip's case, I wonder? Clearly this is
an issue that is reported in many distros, many versions. My gut
feeling is that the last one may be relevant, as it's fairly recent,
with new hardware and the 2.6 kernel. Perhaps someone more
knowledgeable could look at the thread and comment?

What sources (as below, the other one which I apparently forgot.) _do_ you

What command are you running to update those sources? Try:

Re: [newbie] SpamAssassin and DNS Black Lists

2004-01-16 Thread Chris

In case anyone is using SpamAssassin and wants to increase their use of
the available DNS Blacklists, I have a configuration file that I can make

Spamcop and some others. Some of these blacklists were removed from
current version of SpamAssassin because the original locations, like
OSIRUSOFT went offline due to DDOS attacks by spammers. I have found
some new locations for those so that I can continue to benefit from the
blacklists that were so effective that spammers actually hired virus
 writers to shut them down.

Brian, question on running spamassassin. There are two files to run spamc
and spamd. Should they both be running together? I have spamc set to
start at boot and its running, spamd I find has to be started from a root
terminal. I figured I'd better do something about this overwhelimg inflow
of spam since earthlink doesn't seem to be.

[newbie] Opening terminal adds users

2004-01-16 Thread Chris
Everytime I open a terminal whether its as user or root a user is added,
ie..my sig shows 7 users. How do I make these go away other than
rebooting? Logging out/back in doesn't help. The only time I notice one
sometimes isn't added is if I open a terminal from konqueror tools Open
terminal.

Thanks

[newbie] virus infected file in cooker?

2004-01-16 Thread Troy T. Hall

I just discovered this after AVG kept telling I had
a virus after it had cleaned it.
c:\WINDOWS\Desktop\Mandrake\Cooker\mailman-2.1.2-9mdk.i586.rpm-(RPM)-(GZip)-./usr/lib/mailman/tests/msgs/nimda.txt-(part:)-(IFRAME)
- HTML/IFrame_Exploit* - Infected

This file was downloaded from the mandrake cooker
ftp site.
The ultimate question is now, I wonder if my server
is infected.

spamd is the server process that runs at boot and listens for connections that
it checks against the filters. Spamc is the client piece of SA that you send
mail to, it then connects to spamd and gets the mail filtered.

Spamc does not need to be started at all, you direct mail to it with procmail.
My procmail file has a line
| /usr/bin/spamc -f
This lines tells procmail to pipe the mail message to the spamc client which
interacts with the spamd process and then returns the message after the
recipes have been applied and new headers have been added.

If you are running Mandrake, I would advise you to install the Mandrake RPM's
of spamassassin and then you can manually upgrade SA by downloading the
newest version and either building it or you can install it using CPAN.

It's just a text file that comes in the package. Since it's called 'nimda', AVG
is picking it up. It would pick up anything with the word 'nimda'

urpmi.removemedia -a which of course deleted everything.. I would like to

they named, do I need to browse to each cd.. can someone just email me the
urpmi.cfg file out of their etc/urpmi directory that shows the original
  settings?

There was a another newbie post earlier this week but it did not quite do the
same thing plus it was not quite right in its instructions either.

Here is the full details..if this does not work for you..then sorry..:)

 urpmi.removemedia -a
You will find that your installation CD's are missing from the list
To readd your cd sources do:.

Put CD1 in the drive and in root terminal type:

 urpmi.addmedia --distrib cdrom removable://mnt/cdrom

 Johan

Thanks Johan. I actually was lead in this direction by the install forum
on Mandrake club.. but they left out the cdrom part.. so it acted liked
it worked but there was still nothing listed when I went to install
packages. Also urpmi.cfg was still blank.

So I thought to myself, to try sticking a name in..(same location where
you wrote cdrom.. I used Installation\ CD1.. Then just as you did
above.. This triggered a full read and added the database files for all
the CD's, even the other 5 CD's that are not part of the download
package.

So I got it but thanks for answer my question.

You need some KDE libraries in order to be able to run some applications
writtten for KDE. Check the box in Remove Software and see what
messages come up - it will give you a list of programs which will also
 be reomved because of dependencies.

I'm against uninstalling KDE. Though you use Gnome, as I did at one point,
KDE has many programs that are quite useful. For instance, I prefer
Konqueror over Galeon and Mozilla, and I don't think it's possible to use
Konqueror without KDE installed.

I'd advise against it, but do as you wish

[newbie] compatible pcmcia network adapter?

2004-01-16 Thread Joe
I am giving up on getting my friends integrated intel NIC working on his
VAIO under mandrake. He is willing to shell out cash for a network card
that works well with 9.2. A local mom and pop shop here in Edmonton
sells an Asus wl-100 pcmcia nic for $40 canadian. It sounds like a
reasonable deal but, anyone know if it's supported? Anyone want to
suggest other well supported cards (non-wireless only please). TIA.

Coolness. I tried the web page but can't get to ftp.ibiblio.org ATM.
Will the athlon RPMS be included in contrib soon? I'll probably want
to use my cooker mirror du jour (sunet.se) and just update via urpmi.
