[newbie] Inconsistent success with gdesklets
Hello again, everyone. I've recently started using gdesklets (v0.26.1), but have so far only been able to get the SysInfo desklet to work. Whenever I install and try to run a new desklet, I get two errors (examples from the Calendar desklet): - Could not load sensor 'Calendar' An error occurred while loading a sensor. This most likely means that the sensor is broken or simply not installed. Invalid display file '/usr/share/gdesklets/Displays/calendar-0.2.5.2/Calendar.display' The display file contains invalid data and could not be loaded. - I got the same problem early on with SysInfo, but I finally got it to work. The only trouble is, I moved things into so many different directories in an effort to get it to work-- and I kept such poor track of what I was doing --that I can't recall which setup finally worked. This is my fault, obviously, and I hate to keep bothering you fine folks with problems related to my own inattention; but anyway... ;) The main problem is that I can't get a clear and consistent answer for exactly _where_ desklets ought to be installed in the first place. Some sites have users install them in their home directories (I get a flat-out file does not exist error when I try this); others mention setups in the /usr directory tree, but nothing matches my own directory structure well enough for to guess how to adapt the instructions. Is there anyone here using Mandrake 9.2 who can pass along the secret of their gdesklets success? By the way, I'm using Xfce, so the 'drag-n-drop' solution for GNOME won't work for me. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated; thanks very much in advance. If you read the docs in the archive for any given display, it explains this. You need to install the 'sensor' first. For example, from the 'clock' package: Displays (desktop applets) don't have to be installed to be used. You may run them where they are (you decide where you collect your displays). Sensors, however, have to be installed before displays can use them. If a required sensor is not installed, then 'gDesklets' will complain that it couldn't find the sensor. You just have to run the sensor installer in order to install a sensor. Look for a file called 'install-thing-sensor.bin' and run it. An easier method, though, for at least the clock display, is to install from urpmi: urpmi gdesklets-clock -- JoeHill RLU #282046 / www.orderinchaos.org Kernel 2.4.22-21.tmb.1mdk Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (FiveStar) for i586 +++ 21:19:54 up 4 days, 7:47, 8 users, load average: 0.30, 0.11, 0.03 +++ The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways. Thanks Derek and bascule. I have now setup KDE/MDK for ALSA, and logging in/out between users works fine. Have also put them both in 'audio' group I said I was a newbie so... how do i give the audio group rw perms? also changing the console.perms, and commenting out the sound line results in BOTH users losing sound, is this because audio group needs the rw perms. I installed the magicdev package and changed the fstab file to mnt/cdrom auto from mnt/hdc. The mount point has to exist as a folder. So if the folder /mnt/cdrom does not exist you must create it before the cdrom will mount. Magicdev starts when you log in, so you might have to log out and back in again before it will start ps aux | grep magicdev will confirm it is running. I checked the lilo file and did not see any reference to ide-scsi. The new lilo file read: append=devfs=mount acpi=ht resume=/dev/hda5. I also ran the lilo -v afterwards. Cd-rom won't mount. I am probably doing something wrong here but can't see it. Thanks john I assume you are using a data CD and not an audio CD? Audio CDs do not mount. Also how are you checking if the drive will mount? With magicdev there is no need to mount the CD. Just open konqueror and browse to the mount point. And finally. Just in the process of snagging an RPM of the Helix Player. Wanted to know if anyone out there in Mandrakeland has had any experience with this thing, good or bad (esp bad...). Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get my Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem to work under 10 official? I upgraded, and for some reason, the files are still in the /usr/share/speedtouch/ folder (speedtouch.sh and mgmt.o), but the modem wont start. If I open up a terminal and cd to the /usr/share/speedtouch/ folder, and type ./speedtouch.sh start, the modem lights will flash away as if something is going on, but then I get a red failure message. No backtrace or anything. Can anyone pinpoint the problem? Oh yes, and when I go into drakconnect to configure the connection, I click on speedtouch USB, and I get a little warning pop up, saying sorry we only support kernel 2.4 and higher. eh?? to change permissions you can use 'chmod' on the command line, as root: cd /dev/sound chmod g+rw the g stands for group (which is audio) and the +rw should be self explanatory, if the owner is not root and the group audio then do: chown root.audio * (assuming you are in the /dev/sound directory, you will need to do the same for files in /dev/snd there are files outside these directories but there are symlinks and you shouldn't have to touch them for audio stuff bascule On Monday 10 May 2004 5:15 pm, Peter wrote: f you can let me know how to change permissions on the audio group, then this would help. Look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log for line that begin with [EE] for possible reasons for the failure. after I have run liveupdate and udpated the Xfree86 on my 2 pc's with version 9.1, it looks like Mandrake 9.1 not have done the update as it should but just have removed the working Xfree and not installed the new updated one as it shall and then will the Xree window not run. Do 'rpm -qa | grep XFree' and post the results. Then have I now got it work and here is the results: --- XFree86-100dpi-fonts-4.3-8.2mdk XFree86-devel-4.3-8.2mdk XFree86-xfs-4.3-8.2mdk XFree86-4.3-8.2mdk XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.3-8.2mdk XFree86-static-libs-4.3-8.2mdk XFree86-libs-4.3-8.2mdk How can I fix it to it will work again. If XFree has indeed been removed, just do 'urpmi XFree' and see if it will install properly. -- JoeHill RLU #282046 / www.orderinchaos.org Kernel 2.4.22-21.tmb.1mdk Mandrake Linux release 9.2 (FiveStar) for i586 +++ 16:48:44 up 3 days, 3:15, 6 users, load average: 0.20, 0.28, 0.19 +++ Not only do I think marijuana should be legalized, I think it should be mandatory -- Bill Hicks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Setting up a 2nd user

Still VERY new to Linux, so will be asking questions. I have added a 2nd user (dominic), and am having a problem allowing 'dominic' to use sound. It says 'permission denied', do I need to set permissions, or can I do it from 1st user (where setting up sound etc. is fine). Th reason for setting up 2nd user is to allow my son (dominic who is disabled), to use the PC, with sound, and other input devices (joystick, tracker ball, Accessible features), seperate from me. Please help ( in simple terminology at the moment!) Peter It is not normally required to have to give individual users permission to use sound. Although there are some circumstances where someone may be denied access to sound. One such circumstance is when you use the older OSS sound driver. The OSS drivers only allow one application to use sound at any one time, and the sound system will be locked out to other applications for about 30 seconds after the sound was last used. It may be you are falling foul of this restriction in some way. The solution is to use the newer ALSA sound drivers which allow simultaneous access to the sound system by several applications at once. You can recognise if you have the ALSA drivers if you open Mandrake Control CentreHardwareHardware If the Module for your sound card is listed as snd-x then you are running the ALSA driver. If you are using the OSS driver you can switch to the alternative ALSA driver by pressing the 'Run Config Tool' button. If you are already using the ALSA driver, the problem could still be related to OSS only supporting one application at a time, because ALSA supports an OSS emulation mode for those older applications that only understand OSS. If you are using the KDE desktop there is a setting in there to have it use ALSA or OSS (emulation) Open KDE Control Centre (MenuSystemConfigureConfigure your desktop) SoundSoundsystemHardware There is a selection there to force it to use the ALSA sound system. (You would have to do this for each user) If that does not help let us know which sound drivers you are using and the details of the sound card. derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] no /dev/dsp in 10.0
I installed 10.0 official. I have a azt2320 ISA soundcard, which worked fine in 9.x and 8.x I added to /etc/modprobe.preload the snd-azt2320 line. Sound modules are loaded correctly at boot, but /dev/dsp is not created so xmms and mplayer don't generate sound. If I manually create the /dev/dsp device, sound works ok. I also tried adding alias snd-slot-0 snd-azt2320 to /etc/modprobe.conf, but it does not change, still no /dev/dsp. Is there a correct way to force the boot script to create the /dev/dsp device? thanks, raffaele Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? See :- http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=AzTechcard=AZT2320chip=AZT2320module=azt2320 This page only goves the lines to add for the 2.4 kernel (modules.conf) If you edit /etc/modules.conf and then run /sbin/generate-modprobe.conf then it will create a /etc/modprobe.conf file for you (Make a backup first in case it screws something up. It always gets the nvidia line wrong when I use it) (BTW: You might find xmms works without having to do anything to the drivers if you configure xmms to use the ALSA output plugin ) derek -- www.jennings.homelinux.net http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Setting up a 2nd user
i'm guessing that this happens when you are also logged on and youhave started a second session, if you look in /etc/security/console.perms you will see a list pertaining to what permissions device get assigned when someone logs in and the default perms when you log out, note that all the sound devices will be owned by the first logged in user and stay that way if someone else logs on in the meantime, to fix this you can comment out the relevant lines, and then make your users members of the audio group, also make sure that you alter the perms of the file to give the audio group rw perms, do this for other device files that the other user might need access to, although this works for me to allow my daughter to log on and play music, i would appreciate if some expert could explain why it is that the references (in my case) to the device files for my nvidia card don't need to be changed for another user to log on, how does that work? bascule On Monday 10 May 2004 9:36 am, Peter wrote: I have added a 2nd user (dominic), and am having a problem allowing 'dominic' to use sound. Re: [newbie] I'm losting my samba's shares after some time... permission denied... help plz.
Bill, I would like to thank you again... well, I would run ls -ld /share/docs before doing 'chmod -R 750 /share/docs' to see if the permissions had been changed. Also, I you should use 2770 as the permissions. 2xxx sets the sticky bit which means all files/directories created in this directory will have the group of this directory. the permission changed right... no problem with this... Ok.. I will use 2xxx permission... I did not understood what means this '2' I do not see /share/docs in your smb.conf. I see /home/docs and /home/c. Where you put the share is important as far as msec is concerned. I just create the share directory with another name... but using yours instructions... There are five security levels for msec. I am using security level 3 for msec: [EMAIL PROTECTED] msec]# cat /etc/sysconfig/msec META_CLASS=PowerPack SECURE_LEVEL=3 CLASS=expert UMASK_ROOT=027 UMASK_USER=022 TMOUT=0 My security level is 3, and my msec file have this: UMASK_ROOT=022 SECURE_LEVEL=3 UMASK_USER=022 TMOUT=0 which means that msec will use /usr/share/msec/perm.3 as the control file for setting permissions. If you use SECURE_LEVEL=2, then examine /usr/share/msec/perm.2 and so on. Let us assume you are level 3. Examine /usr/share/msec/perm.3. Do you see the lines: /home/root.root 755 /home/* current 711 yes they are there... msec will decrease the permissions on /home to at most 755. However, I think the next line is biting you. msec will set the permissions on all directories off of /home to at most 711. Therefore, if /home/docs is where you put the directory, msec is clobbering the permissions. If you move /home/docs to /home/shares/docs then the permissions will not be affected. This is what I would reccomend. hmmm... this is great! I, personally, use: [EMAIL PROTECTED] msec]# ls -ld /lan /lan/shares /lan/shares/Apps drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 4096 Jul 26 2003 /lan/ drwxr-x--x 23 bill smbusers 4096 Apr 30 00:08 /lan/shares/ drwxrwsr-x 12 bill smbusers 4096 Jun 30 2003 /lan/shares/Apps/ [Apps] comment = Windows/MS-DOS applications (r/w) path = /lan/shares/Apps browseable = yes guest ok = yes writeable = no write list = @smbusers create mask = 771 directory mask = 770 map hidden = yes map system = yes map archive = yes available = yes smbusers is the group that I put all samba users in. It is not affected by msec: /root.adm755 which would affect /share, or by: /home/* current 711 which would affect /home/docs. msec is sometimes a pain, but I am learning to live with it. I haven't disabled msec in the far chance that if my system ever gets compromized, msec may help me. HTH, Bill Shirley I will try to create the directories in /home/shares/docs to see what happens... when I install Mandrake, I create a partition for each /, /home, /usr, /var, /tmp directories, to avoid lost data in some crash... so maybe creating my shares directories in another partition than /home resolve this problem (?) I will try your hints and will let you know... Thank you again. Flávio Henrique Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
